Abstract
This study investigated the impact of cornstalk, bagasse, and spent mushroom substrate (SMS) as auxiliary materials on the nitrogen cycling and humification during the aerobic composting of high-solids anaerobically digested residues using high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing and PICRUSt2 functional prediction. Results showed that cornstalk and SMS accelerated compost warming and upregulated the expression of nitrogen-cycling-related genes (e.g. ureC, narH, and narG), thereby significantly reducing (P < 0.05) N2O and NH3 emissions and increasing the NO3--N content in the compost. Furthermore, cornstalk enriched the microbial diversity and abundance of key bacteria involved in degradation and humification (e.g. Sphingobacterium and Moheibacter), which increased the humic acid content (HA) (78.4 g/kg DM). Although bagasse promoted aerobic conditions, it had less effect on nitrogen cycling and humification. The study highlights the intricate relationship between nitrogen metabolism and humification, demonstrating how selection of auxiliary materials can optimize composting for environmental sustainability.

Abstract
Food waste is an increasing cause of concern in India. Its management through composting plays a vital role in managing the biodegradable fraction of municipal solid waste. However, the existing composting process has many challenges, such as the lack of optimum microenvironment and microbiome knowledge, which limits efficient outcomes. Therefore, the present study aims to bridge the gap by applying metagenomics to study microbial community dynamicity during different stages of composting. The bacterial community analysis showed that genus Marionobacter (9.4%) and Halomonas (7.4%) were prevalent during the mesophilic stage, whereas the Bacillus (12.2%) and Cellulomonas (0.1%) were prevalent during the thermophilic and maturation stage of composting. The functional profiling of metagenome indicated the abundance of genes involved in degradation of polymeric compounds such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. The relative abundance of arginine and proline metabolisms increased during the thermophilic stage. Whereas the relative abundance of genes involved in fatty acid, tryptophan, galactose, and propanoate metabolisms declined. Similarly, the CAZyme tool predicted that the genes encoding for glycoside hydrolase (GH) families were higher during the mesophilic and thermophilic stages of composting. These enzymes play an important role in degradation of complex polysaccharides such as cellulose and hemicellulose. The data obtained from the present study could be utilized for the optimization and improving the composting process.

Abstract
Here, thermophilic bacteria (TB) with cellulose degradation functions were screened from composting panda feces and applied to cattle manure composting. TB (Aeribacillus pallidus G5 and Parageobacillus toebii G12) inoculation led to remarkable improvement of the compost temperature, prolonging of the thermophilic stage and shortening of the composting process, resulting in increased manure harmlessness (GI ≥ 70%), compost humification, and greenhouse gas emission reduction (14.19%-22.57%), compared with the control compost, within 15 days of composting. In particular, G5 inoculation reduced NH3 emissions by 41.97% relative to control composts over 15 days. G5 was capable of rapidly colonizing in the composts, and its inoculation immediately enriched the genera of Firmicutes, and simultaneously decreased the genera of Proteobacteria, contributing to the elimination of harmful microorganisms. Notably, this strain lacked antibiotic resistance genes, and the absolute abundances of resistance genes and mobile genetic genes (MGEs) decreased the most (by 80.84%). Metagenomic analysis revealed that enzymes capable of producing CO2, N2O, and NH3 were generally inhibited, while CO2 fixation and N2O and NH3 reduction enzymes were enriched in the G5 compost, since metagenome-assembled genomes of Proteobacteria harbored more key genes and enzymes in complete pathways for producing N2O, NH3, and CO2. Moreover, Proteobacteria, such as Pseudomonas and Halopseudomonas, were the main host of resistance genes and MGEs. Overall, the gas emission could be reduced, and more efficient control of resistance genes could be achieved by inhibited the abundance of Proteobacteria during composting. This study provides a safe and effective microbial agent (A. pallidus) for manure treatment.

Abstract
The comprehensive effects of exogenous additives on microbial-driven antibiotic resistance profiles and C/N/S conversion in animal manure composting remains uncertain. This study examined whether tea branch biochar could regulate the microflora involved in antibiotic resistance and C/N/S conversion during pig and chicken manure composting. Compared with the control treatment, biochar addition prolonged the high-temperature period (>55 °C) for 1-2 days and raised the maximum temperature in chicken manure composting. Moreover, biochar addition reduced the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in both pig and chicken manure composting by up to 30 %, targeting various types of ARGs such as peptide, phenicol, and diaminopyrimidines. Additionally, the compost microbiota exhibited the overlaps of C/N/S conversion functions. Luteimonas (Xanthomonadaceae) was identified as a dominant bacterium responsible for C/N/S conversion in both pig and chicken manure composting, while also acting as a potential ARG carrier. Thus, Luteimonas is crucial in shaping antibiotic resistance profiles and C/N/S cycling in animal manure composting, indicating its role as a keystone genus. These findings suggest that tea branch biochar can mitigate the spread of ARGs from animal manure, as well as enhance nutrient cycling and compost quality.

Abstract
The burgeoning global mushroom industry has precipitated challenges related to the efficient and sustainable utilization of spent mushroom substrate (SMS). Composting is regarded as an efficient way for the ecological utilization of SMS. The addition of microbial inoculants can promote the composting process and improve the quality of compost products. This study introduced two bacterial inoculants, Bacillus paralicheniformis HL-05 (BP) and Streptomyces thermoviolaceus LC-10 (ST), into the composting process of SMS. The impact of these inoculants was evaluated through analyses of physicochemical properties, lignocellulose degradation, and high-throughput sequencing to elucidate their ecological roles and optimize the composting process. The results suggest that inoculation with BP and ST significantly prolonged the thermophilic stage by 2-3 days, representing an increase of 22.22-33.33%. Moreover, it boosted the degradation rates of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin by 18.37-29.77%, 35.74-50.43%, and 40.32-40.83%, respectively, compared to the control. Furthermore, inoculation rapidly altered the microbial community structure during the rapid temperature-rising stage and strengthened interconnections among composting microorganisms. The microbial inoculation substantially enhanced the proliferation of thermophilic lignocellulose-degrading microorganisms during the thermophilic stage, thereby facilitating the utilization of lignocellulose. This study proposes a novel and effective strategy for SMS composting using microbial inoculants.

Abstract
To reduce the ammonia loss during the trough composting process and the problem of low initial pH of the compost due to one-time addition of organic acids. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of buffering the pH of the compost and controlling the ammonia emission through the addition of dilute acetic acid sprayed on the surface of the compost pile after several pile-turnings in the trough composting process. The results showed that the spraying of acetic acid did not have a significant difference in the effect on the initial pH and maintained a slightly alkaline environment throughout the composting process, which led to an increase in the degradation rate of 58.38% at the end of the composting process. Compared with natural composting, the pile-turning of trough compost increased the ammonia volatilisation by 125.53% and nitrogen loss by 10.75% during the composting process, but the spraying of 0.005 mol/L dilute acetic acid solution and water on the surface layer of the heap could reduce the ammonia emission of the heap, which was reduced by 36.31% and 17.81%, and the rate of nitrogen loss was reduced by 12.63% and 3.59%, respectively. This study suggests that acetic acid is a suitable additive for composting. Spraying acetic acid after compost turning not only stabilises compost pH, but also reduces ammonia volatilisation loss. It provides a reference for the efficient ammonia reduction technology of compost.

Abstract
The aerobic composting process is extensively utilized to manage kitchen waste. Nonetheless, the variability in the quality of compost derived from engineering practices which significantly hinders its broader industrial application. This work investigated the final products of kitchen waste compost at multiple industrial-scale treatment facilities utilizing three distinct aerobic composting processes in a bid to explore key factors affecting compost quality. The quality evaluation was based on technical parameters like seed germination index (GI), and limiting factors such as heavy metal content. The results showed that most of the compost products failed to meet the established standards, with GI being the primary limiting indicator. Furthermore, maturity assessments suggested that compost with low GI exhibited reduced humification could not be recommended for agricultural use. The investigation delved into the primary determinants of GI, focusing on risk factors such as the oil and salt of kitchen waste, and the microbial community of the humification driving forces. The results indicated that products with low GI had higher oil and salt content and a relatively simple microbial community. A thorough analysis suggested that excessive levels oil and salt were potential influencing factors on GI, as they stimulated the activity of acid-producing bacteria like Lactobacillus, suppressed the activity of humification-promoting bacteria such as Actinomarinales, and influenced the decomposition and humification processes of organic matter and total nitrogen, thereby affecting product quality. The findings provide valuable insights for improving kitchen waste compost products for agricultural applications.

Abstract
Resource utilization of tail vegetables has raised increasing concerns in the modern agriculture. However, the effect and related mechanisms of flue-cured tobacco leaves on the product quality, phytotoxicity and bacterially-mediated nitrogen (N) transformation process of tail vegetable composting were poorly understood. Amendments of high-dosed (5% and 10% w/w) tobacco leaves into the compost accelerated the heating process, prolonged the time of thermophilic stage, increased the peak temperature, thereby improving maturity and shortening composting duration. The tobacco leaf amendments at the 10% (w/w) increased the N conservation (TN and NH4-N content) of compost, due to the supply of N-containing nutrient and promotion of organic matter degradation by tobacco leaves. Besides, tobacco leaf amendments promoted the seed germination and root development of wild soybean, exhibiting the feasibility of composting product for promoting the growth of salt-tolerant plants, but no dose-dependent effect was found for tobacco leaf amendments. Addition of high dosed (5% and 10% w/w) tobacco leaves shifted the bacterial community towards lignocellulosic and N-fixing bacteria, contributing to increasing the compost maturity and N retention. PICRUSt 2 functional prediction revealed that N-related bacterial metabolism (i.e., hydroxylamine oxidation and denitrifying process) was enhanced in the tobacco leaf treatments, which contributed to N retention and elevated nutrient quality of composting. To the best knowledge, this was the first study to explore the effect of tobacco waste additives on the nutrient transformation and halophyte growth promotion of organic waste composting. These findings will deepen the understanding of microbially-mediated N transformation and composting processes involving flue-cured tobacco leaves.

Abstract
The spontaneous solid-state stacking process (SSSP) of Baijiu is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective process for enriching and assembling environmental microorganisms to guarantee the subsequent fermentation efficiency. In this study, how SSSP create spatial heterogeneity of stacking piles were found through spatiotemporal sampling. The degree of difficulty in oxygen exchange categorizes the stacking pile into depleted (≤4%), transitional (4 %-17 %), and enriched (≥17 %) oxygen-defined layers. This results in variation in succession rates (Vdepleted > Vtransitional > Venriched), which accelerates spatial heterogeneity during SSSP. As a dominant species (65 %-99 %) in depleted and transitional layers, Acetilactobacillus jinshanensis can rapidly reduce oxygen disturbance by upregulating poxL and catE, that sustains spatial heterogeneity. The findings demonstrated the value of oxygen control in shaping spatial heterogeneity during SSSP processes, which can create specific functional microbiome. Adding spatial heterogeneity management will help achieve more precise control of such solid-state fermentation systems.

Abstract
Phages play a crucial role in orchestrating top-down control within microbial communities, influencing the dynamics of the composting process. Despite this, the impact of phage-induced thermophilic bacterial lysis on humification remains ambiguous. This study investigates the effects of phage lysate, derived explicitly from Geobacillus subterraneus, on simulated composting, employing ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA sequencing techniques. The results show the significant role of phage lysate in expediting humus formation over 40 days. Notably, the rapid transformation of protein-like precursors released from phage-induced lysis of the host bacterium resulted in a 14.8 % increase in the proportion of lignins/CRAM-like molecules. Furthermore, the phage lysate orchestrated a succession in bacterial communities, leading to the enrichment of core microbes, exemplified by the prevalence of Geobacillus. Through network analysis, it was revealed that these enriched microbes exhibit a capacity to convert protein and lignin into essential building blocks such as amino acids and phenols. Subsequently, these components were polymerized into humus, aligning with the phenol-protein theory. These findings enhance our understanding of the intricate microbial interactions during composting and provide a scientific foundation for developing engineering-ready composting humification regulation technologies.

Abstract
In order to explore the effects of micro-nano bubble water (MNBW) on compost maturation and the microbial community in cow manure and straw during aerobic composting, we conducted composting tests using tap water with 12 mg/L (O12), 15 mg/L (O15), 18 mg/L (O18), and 21 mg/L (O21) dissolved oxygen in MNBW, as well as tap water with 9 mg/L dissolved oxygen as a control (CK). The results showed that O21 increased the maximum compost temperature to 64 °C, which was higher than the other treatments. All treatments met the harmless standards for compost. The seed germination index (GI) was largest under O21 and 15.1% higher than that under CK, and the non-toxic compost degree was higher. Redundancy analysis showed that the temperature, C/N, pH, and GI were important factors that affected the microbial community composition. The temperature, C/N, and pH were significantly positively correlated with Firmicutes and Actinobacteria (p < 0.05). Firmicutes was the dominant phylum in the mesophilic stage (2-6 days) and it accounted for a large proportion under O21, where the strong thermophilic metabolism increased the production of heat and prolonged the high temperature period. The bacterial genus Ammoniibacillus in Firmicutes accounted for a large proportion under O21 and it accelerated the decomposition of substrates. Therefore, the addition of MNBW changed the microbial community to affect the maturation of the compost, and the quality of the compost was higher under O21.

Abstract
Microbial treatment can reduce the antinutritional factors and allergenic proteins in corn-soybean meal mixture (CSMM), but the role of the microbial community in hypoallergenicity and digestibility during the fermentation process remains unclear. Therefore, the fermentation strains of Bacillus and LAB were determined, and the compatibility and fermentation process of two-stage solid fermentation composite bacteria were optimized, and the dynamic changes in physicochemical property and microbial community during two-stage fermentation were investigated. Results showed that Bacillus subtilis NCUBSL003 and Lactobacillus acidophilus NCUA065016 were the best fermentation combinations. The optimal fermentation conditions were inoculum 7.14%, solid-liquid ratio of 1:0.88 and fermentation time of 74.30 h. The contents of TI, β-conglycinin and glycinin decreased significantly after fermentation. Besides, TCA-SP, small peptides and FAA increased. Bacillus and Lactobacillus were the main genera. Pathogenic bacteria genera were inhibited effectively. This study suggests the feasibility of two-stage fermentation in improving the nutrient values and safety of the CSMM. Abstract
This work aimed to investigate the microbial mechanisms for the improvement of composting efficiency driven by the compound microbial inoculum (MI) (Bacillus subtilis SL-44, Enterobacter hormaechei Rs-189 and Trichoderma reesei) during co-composting of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) and chicken manure (CM). The treatments used in the study were as follows: 1) MI (inoculation with microbial inoculum), 2) CI (inoculation with commercial microbial inoculum), and 3) CK (without inoculation). The results demonstrated that MI increased the seed germination index (GI) by 25.11%, and contents of humus, humic acid (HA) and available phosphorus (AP) were correspondingly promoted by 12.47%, 25.93% and 37.16%, respectively. The inoculation of MI increased the temperature of the thermophilic stage by 3-7 °C and achieved a cellulose degradation rate of 52.87%. 16S rRNA gene analysis indicated that Actinobacteria (11.73-61.61%), Firmicutes (9.46-65.07%), Proteobacteria (2.86-32.17%) and Chloroflexi (0.51-10.92%) were the four major phyla during the inoculation composting. Bacterial metabolic functional analysis revealed that pathways involved in amino acid and glycan biosynthesis and metabolism were boosted in the thermophilic phase. There was a positive correlation between bacterial communities and temperature, humification and phosphorus fractions. The average dry weight, fresh weight and seedling root length in the seedling substrates adding MI compost were 1.13, 1.23 and 1.06 times higher than those of the CK, respectively. This study revealed that biological inoculation could improve the composting quality and efficiency, potentially benefiting the resource utilization of agricultural waste resources.

Abstract
The dynamic price increases of fertilizers and the generation of organic waste are currently global issues. The growth of the population has led to increased production of solid municipal waste and a higher demand for food. Food production is inherently related to agriculture and, to achieve higher yields, it is necessary to replenish the soil with essential minerals. A synergistic approach that addresses both problems is the implementation of the composting process, which aligns with the principles of a circular economy. Food waste, green waste, paper waste, cardboard waste, and animal manure are promising feedstock materials for the extraction of valuable compounds. This review discusses key factors that influence the composting process and compares them with the input materials' parameters. It also considers methods for optimizing the process, such as the use of biochar and inoculation, which result in the production of the final product in a significantly shorter time and at lower financial costs. The applications of composts produced from various materials are described along with associated risks. In addition, innovative composting technologies are presented.

Abstract
Microbial deodorization is a novel strategy for reducing odor in livestock and poultry feces. Herein, 12 strains of ammonia (NH3) and 15 hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removing bacteria were obtained with a removal efficiency of 65.20-79.80% and 34.90-79.70%, respectively. A novel bacteria deodorant named MIX (Bacillus zhangzhouensis, Bacillus altitudinis, and Acinetobacter pittii at a ratio of 1:1:2) were obtained. MIX can shorten the temperature rising stage by 2 days and prolong the thermophilic stage by 4 days. The ability of MIX to remove NH3, H2S, and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and the underlying removal mechanism were analyzed during pig feces fermentation. MIX can significantly reduce the concentrations of NH3 and H2S by 41.82% and 66.35% and increase the concentrations of NO3--N and SO42- by 7.80% and 8.83% (P < 0.05), respectively, on the 25th day. Moreover, the concentrations of acetic, propionate, iso-valerate, and valerate were significantly reduced. The dominant bacteria communities at the phylum level were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Spirochaetes. B. zhangzhouensis and B. altitudinis could convert NH4+-N to NO3--N, and A. pittii could transfer H2S to SO42-. This study revealed that bacteria deodorant can reduce the concentrations of NH3, H2S, and VFAs in pig feces and increase those of NH4+, NO3-, and SO42- and has excellent potential in deodorizing livestock and poultry feces composting.

Abstract
Aerobic composting is eco-friendly and sustainable practice for kitchen waste (KW) disposal to restore soil fertility and reduce environmental risks. However, KW compact structure, perishable nature, acidification by anaerobic acidogens, inhibits the metabolism of aerobic microbes, insufficient breakdown of organic matters, and prolong the composting duration. This study, co-composted coal fly ash (FA), to regulate bacterial dynamics, co-occurrence patterns and nutrients transformation in KW composting. Our results indicated, FA created suitable environment by increasing pH and temperature, which facilitated the proliferation and reshaping of microbial community. FA fostered the relative abundances of phlya (Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Actinobacteriota) and genera (Bacillus, Paenibacillus and Lysinibacillus), which promoted the nutrients transformation (phosphorus and nitrogen) in KW compost. FA enhanced the mutualistic correlations between bacterial communities, promoted the network complexity (nodes & edges) and contains more positive connections, which reflect the FA amendment effects. KW mature compost seed germination index reached >85% of FA treatment, indicated the final products fully met the Chinese national standard for organic fertilizer. These findings might provide opportunity to advance the KW composting and collaborative management of multiple waste to curb the current environmental challenges.

Abstract
This study introduced a novel mechanically-enhanced dynamic composting (MEDC) method for treating kitchen waste (KW) through partial-mixing and stratified fermentation. A pilot test varied aeration frequencies (AF) to refine control parameters and explore the maturation mechanism. Results showed that a moderate AF (10 min/4 h) achieved optimal efficiency, with a compost germination index of 123 % within 15 d. Moderate AF enhanced the growth of Corynebacterium_1 (25.4 %) and Saccharomonospora (10.5 %) during the low-temperature stage and Bacillus growth (91.3 %) during the maturation stage. Moreover, it enhanced microbial interactions (with an average degree of 19.9) and promoted substrate degradation and transformation, expediting heating and maturation. Multivariate dimensionality reduction analysis showed the MEDC accomplished rapid composting through stratified composting, dividing the reactor into distinct functional zones: feeding, low-temperature, high-temperature, and maturation. This enabled efficient microorganism enrichment and material degradation, expediting KW decomposition and maturation. This study offers a promising alternative for accelerated KW composting.

Abstract
The low C/N ratio, high moisture content, and low porosity of food waste require the addition of bulking agents for adjustment during the composting process. However, the effect and mechanism of different bulking agents on the reduction of carbon and nitrogen losses are unclear. Therefore, this study conducted experiments to evaluate and clarify the differences in carbon and nitrogen transformation between sawdust, rice husk and wheat bran in food waste composting. The results showed that the addition of bulking agents promoted the conversion of carbon and nitrogen into total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic nitrogen (TON) rather than CO2 and NH3. The carbon and nitrogen losses were reduced by 16.00-25.71% and 11.56-29.54%, respectively. Notably, the Sawdust group exhibited the highest carbon retention, whereas the Wheat_bran group demonstrated superior nitrogen retention. The succession of bacterial communities showed that sawdust enhanced the cellulolysis and xylanolysis functions while wheat bran promoted nitrogen fixation. Correlation analysis was further employed to speculate on potential interactions among carbon and nitrogen components. The incorporation of sawdust and rice husk improved humification partly due to the addition of lignocellulose and the accumulation of total dissolved nitrogen (DTN) in the substrate, respectively. In the process of ammonia assimilation, the addition of wheat bran promoted the accumulation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), contributing to the synthesis of TON to a degree. These findings offer cost-effective strategies for conserving carbon and nitrogen from loss in food waste composting by selecting suitable bulking agents, ultimately producing high-quality fertilizer.

Abstract
There is escalating interest in composting of post-consumption food waste (PCFW) to recycle nutrients and mitigate pollution by inappropriate disposal. The present study aimed to evaluate the performance of bioaugmentation to composting of PCFW, which is in difficulties caused by high sugar, protein and gross lipid content. Inoculation of the microbial consortium effectively induced rapid temperature and pH rising, which led to OM reduction rate at 25.11 % and maturity at 150 % in terms of Germination Index value. EEMs-FRI showed that humification was accelerated in the thermophilic stage and further improved in the mature stage. Bacterial community analysis revealed that microbial inoculant ameliorated acidification, and expedited temperature and pH rising in the initial stage, which in turn accelerated bacteria community succession. The abundance of Actinobacteria was much higher in the thermophilic and mature stage in T2 treatment than in T1, which might explain rapid organic degradation. High temperature enriched thermophilic genera (Thermobifida, Compostibacillus, Neobacillus), and Pseudonocardia and Actinoplanes were enriched in the mature stage, which correlated to effective degradation of organic matter, humification and maturity. Temperature and pH mainly motivated bacterial succession. The results suggest that bioaugmentation is a favorable approach for efficient composting of PCFW.

Abstract
To enhance the efficiency of composting agricultural organic waste (AOW), this study aimed to examine the impact of inoculating tomato straw compost with two distinct microbial agents: ZymoZone (ZZ), a composite microbial agent derived from the straw compost and Effective Microorganisms (EM), a commercial microbial agent. Furthermore, in order to reactivate the microorganisms within the compost during the initial high temperature phase, 10% brown sugar was introduced as a carbon source. The objective of this addition was to assess its influence on the composting process. The findings revealed that compared to the control (CK) group, the ZZ and EM treatments extended the first high-temperature phase by 2 and 1 day, respectively. Furthermore, with the addition of 10% brown sugar, the ZZ and EM treatments remained in the second high-temperature phase for 8 and 7 days, respectively, while the CK treatment had already entered the cooling stage by then. Notably, the inoculation of microbial agents and the addition of brown sugar substantially augmented the activity of lignocellulose-related hydrolases, thereby promoting the degradation of lignocellulose in the ZZ and EM treatment groups. This was confirmed by FTIR analysis, which demonstrated that the addition of microbial agents facilitated the degradation of specific substances, leading to reduced absorbance in the corresponding spectra. XRD analysis further indicated a notable reduction in cellulose crystallinity for both the ZZ (8.00%) and EM (7.73%) treatments. Hence, the incorporation of microbial agents and brown sugar in tomato straw compost effectively enhances the composting process and improves the quality of compost products.

Abstract
Since the environmentally friendly reuse of corn stalks attracts more and more attention, it is an efficient and feasible way to reuse corn stalks as forage. However, whether the cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose within corn stalks can be effectively decomposed becomes a key to reusing corn stalks as forage. Orthogonal test was designed by five different degradation temperatures (22°C, 24°C, 26°C, 28°C, 30°C), five different pH values (4, 5, 6, 8, 10), and five different degradation time durations (5, 15, 25, 30, and 35 days) to examine 25 kinds of different degradation conditions. It was found that the decomposition effect of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin, of group 25 (26°C, pH = 5, 25 days) was stronger compared with other groups, with the contents calculated as 8.22%, 31.55%, and 22.55% individually (p < 0.01, p < 0.05). Group 19 (22°C, pH = 4, 5 days) revealed the worst degradation effect of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose compared to other groups, with contents calculated as 15.48%, 38.85%, and 29.57%, individually (p < 0.01, p < 0.05). The research data deliver a basis for ideal degradation conditions for corn stalks degradation in combination with the digestive enzymes of P. chrysosporium and O. furnacalis larva. Aiming to explore a highly efficient and environmentally friendly corn stalk degradation method.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE With the development of animal husbandry in China, the production of a large amount of livestock and poultry manure has become one of the main agricultural pollution sources. High-temperature aerobic composting stands out as one of the most crucial methods for the safe and resourceful utilization of livestock and poultry manure, serving as an essential link between crop cultivation, animal breeding, and sustainable agricultural development. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the addition of exogenous multifunctional bacterial agents to compost reduces not only harmful emissions but also sequesters or increases essential nutrients. However, these efficacies depend on the specific functions of the bacteriophage itself, the harmonization and complementarity within the colony, and its ability to adapt to the environment. In recent years, relatively few studies have been conducted on actinomycetes. This experiment provides excellent actinomycete resources for the production of high-efficiency and high-quality compost compound microbial agents of manure and straw.

Abstract
The impacts of microbial agents on nitrogen conversion during composting is still not entirely clear. In this research, a novel microbial agent containing two thermotolerant nitrifying bacteria was identified and its impacts on nitrogen conversion, bacterial structure and functional genes during cattle manure composting were investigated. The results revealed that the inoculation enhancing the maturation of compost, increased the total nitrogen by 13.6-26.8%, reduced NH3 emission and the N2O emission by 24.8-36.1% and 22.7-32.1%, respectively. Particularly, the microbial agents mixed Acinetobacter radioresistens and Bacillus nitratireducens (1:1, treatment group 1) had the best nitrogen preservation effect. Furthermore, the inoculation not only produced diverse diazotroph community but could strength the co-occurrence between core microorganisms to promote nitrogen metabolism. The metagenomic analysis demonstrated that the inoculation decreased the abundance of nitrate reduction gene (nirS, norC, nap and nif), and increased the abundance of hao, thus facilitating nitrification and suppressing NH3 and N2O emission.

Abstract
Abatement of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock manure by composting has attracted attention. This study investigated the effect of adding magnesium-modified biochar (MBC) on ARGs and microbial communities in chicken manure composting. Twelve genes for tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and macrolides, and mobile genetic elements were measured in the compost pile. The results showed that after 45 days of the composting, the treatment groups of MBC had longer high temperature periods, significantly higher germination indices (GI) and lower phytotoxicity. There were four major dominant phyla (Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidota) in the compost. The abundance of Firmicutes decreased significantly during the compost cooling period; tetracycline resistance genes demonstrated an extremely significant positive correlation with Firmicutes, showing a trend of the same increase and decrease with composting time; tetT, tetO, tetM, tetW, ermB, and intI2 were reduced in the MBC group; the total abundance of resistance genes in the 2% MBC addition group was 0.67 times that of the control; Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi were also significantly lower than the other treatment groups. Most ARGs were significantly associated with mobile genetic elements (MGEs); MBC can reduce the spread and diffusion of ARGs by reducing the abundance of MGEs and inhibiting horizontal gene transfer (HGT).

Abstract
Recovery and recycling of municipal solid waste biodegradable fraction (50-55%) are essential for attaining sustainability and a circular economy. Among organic waste treatment methods, composting is used to recycle organic fractions of waste. However, only 10-12% of municipal solid waste is utilized for composting treatment due to a lack of segregation practices and process challenges, including long process periods, odorous and greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen loss, and low compost quality, which hinders large-scale practice. The current review paper discusses the challenges of composting treatment and its possible solutions. Various strategies were explored to address these challenges, such as utilizing microbial inoculum, additives, and optimization of physicochemical parameters. It also emphasizes the application of metagenomics for exploring key species. The knowledge about the microbial community and biochemical pathways (genome mining) can be exploited for the improvement of treatment efficiency. Abstract
The lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose contained in corn straw need to be degraded before reuse. Therefore, it is urgent to explore a new strategy that can enhance the degradation effect of lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. Ostrinia furnacalis is one of the corn pests feeding on corn straw, which can degrade and consume corn straw by digestive enzyme secreted in the midgut. Herein, the degradation efficiency of lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose was tested by a stain of white rot fungus combined with digestive enzyme of O. furnacalis extracted from its midgut. It was proved that the selected strain of white rot fungus could degrade lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose effectively. The contents of lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose decreased with the extension of degradation time, with the lowest level reached at 35 d with 9 ml digestive enzyme solution of O. furnacalis added. Compared with the control group, digestive enzyme of O. furnacalis could improve the degradation effect of the selected white rot fungi on lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. The effect of degradation was enhanced with the extension of degradation time and the increase in the amount of digestive enzyme added. The results provide a new strategy and a basis for strengthening the degradation effect of white rot fungi on corn straw.

Abstract
Microbial inoculation was an effective way to improve product quality of composting and solve traditional composting shortage. However, the effect mechanism of microbial inoculation on compost microorganisms remains unclear. Here, Shifts in bacterial community, metabolic function and co-occurrence network during the primary and secondary fermentation stages of bio-compost inoculated with effective microorganisms (EM) agent were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing and network analysis. Microbial inoculation promoted organic carbon transformation in early stage of secondary fermentation (days 27 to 31). The beneficial biocontrol bacteria were main dominant genera at the second fermentation stage. Microbial inoculation can be good for the survival of beneficial bacteria. Inoculation with microbes promoted amino acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and inhibited energy metabolism and citrate cycle (TCA cycle). Microbial inoculation could enhance complexity of bacterial network and enhance mutual cooperation among bacteria during composting.

Abstract
Composting is an effective technology to realize resource utilization of food waste in rural China. However, high oil content in food waste limits composting humification. This study investigated the effects of blended plant oil addition at different proportions (0, 10, 20, and 30%) on the humification of food waste composting. Oil addition at 10%-20% enhanced lignocellulose degradation by 16.6%-20.8% and promoted humus formation. In contrast, the high proportion of oil (30%) decreased the pH, increased the electrical conductivity, and reduced the seed germination index to 64.9%. High-throughput sequencing showed that high oil inhibited the growth and reproduction of bacteria (Bacillus, Fodinicurvataceae, and Methylococcaceae) and fungi (Aspergillus), attenuated their interaction, thus, reducing the conversion of organic matter, such as lignocellulose, fat, and total sugar, to humus, consequently leading to negative impacts on composting humification. The results can guide composting parameter optimization and improve effective management of rural food waste.

Abstract
Phages can promote the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural environments through transduction. However, studies on phage-mediated ARG profiles during composting have not been performed. This study investigated the effects of adding humic acid (HA) on the abundances of bacteria/phage co-mediated ARGs (b/pARGs) during swine manure composting and the key factors that affected the transmission of b/pARGs. The results showed that the addition of 5 % HA during composting could effectively reduce the absolute abundances of b/pARGs, inhibit the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms (e.g., Corynebacterium and Streptococcus) that carried ARGs, and ultimately affect the fate of b/pARGs in the composting process by regulating key environmental factors to change the abundance of co-host bacteria. Overall, the findings of this study provided new information for understanding the main driving factors affecting the b/pARGs profile and provided a reference for the prevention and control of ARGs pollution during composting.

Abstract
Semipermeable membrane-covered composting is one of the most commonly used composting technologies in northeast China, but its humification process is not yet well understood. This study employed a semipermeable membrane-covered composting system to detect the organic matter humification and bacterial community evolution patterns over the course of agricultural waste composting. Variations in physicochemical properties, humus composition, and bacterial communities were studied. The results suggested that membrane covering improved humic acid (HA) content and degree of polymerization (DP) by 9.28% and 21.57%, respectively. Bacterial analysis indicated that membrane covering reduced bacterial richness and increased bacterial diversity. Membrane covering mainly affected the bacterial community structure during thermophilic period of composting. RDA analysis revealed that membrane covering may affect the bacterial community by altering the physicochemical properties such as moisture content. Correlation analysis showed that membrane covering activated the dominant genera Saccharomonospora and Planktosalinus to participate in the formation of HS and HA in composting, thus promoting HS formation and its structural complexity. Membrane covering significantly reduced microbial metabolism during the cooling phase of composting.

Abstract
In this paper, the relationship between black liquor and microbial growth, enzymatic secretion and humus formation in composting was studied. The results showed that black liquor inoculation is an effective way to promote fermentation process. After black liquor inoculation, the abundance of Corynebacterium, Aequorivita, and Pedobacter, which have the catalase and oxidase activity, has been significantly increased. The enzymatic activity of alkaline phosphatase, catalase, peroxidase and invertase was 40 mg/(g·24h), 6.5 mg/(g·20 min), 13 100 mg/(g·24h), and 6100 mg/(g·24h) respectively at day 18. Humic acid and fulvic acid concentration was 12 g/kg and 11 g/kg which is higher than that of the treatments of no black liquor inoculation. The results suggested that black liquor inoculation was beneficial to indigenous microorganisms reproduce efficiently, then the secretion of enzymes related to cellulose, hemicellulose, and lipid hydrolysis, and the formation of humic substances.

Abstract
Soil amendments are used extensively to remediate soils contaminated with heavy metals. However, the effects of soil amendments on heavy metal bioavailability, plant yield, and bacterial community structure in tropical farmland soils remain largely unknown. In the present study, seaweed organic fertilizer (S), apatite (A), biochar (B), and seaweed organic fertilizer-apatite-biochar mixtures (SAB) were applied at different rates to assess their influence on cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) bioavailability in contaminated farmland soils, using different component ratios and doses in maize field plots, and maize yield. Effects on soil bacterial community structure were also evaluated based on high-throughput sequencing. Following addition of 2 % S + A + B combined amendment at a ratio of 1:0.5:1.5 (2%S1A0.5B1.5), soil pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were elevated, and bioavailable Cd, Pb, and Cr concentrations were reduced in potted soils, leading to higher heavy metal immobilization. Under field conditions, soil pH, EC, organic matter, ammonium‑nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, and crop productivity were all increased considerably, whereas soil Cd and Cr bioavailability were lower in the combined amendment treatments than in the control treatments. Particularly, application of a 2.49 t·ha-1 combined amendment (0.83 t·ha-1 S + 0.41 t·ha-1A + 1.25 t·ha-1B,1:0.5:1.5) decreased Cd, Pb, and Cr concentrations in maize grain by 68.9 %, 68.9 %, and 65.7 %, respectively. Species abundance and evenness in bacterial communities increased in field soils subjected to combined amendments, with shifts in community structure and function mostly driven by changes in soil pH, organic matter content, and nutrient availability. Overall, the results suggest that 1.5%S1A0.5B1.5 is the optimal treatment for remediating heavy metal co-contaminated soil, and thereby, improving maize yield and quality. Combined organic and inorganic amendments achieve high remediation efficiency, mainly by improving chemical properties, reducing heavy metal bioavailability, and altering bacterial community structure and function in heavy metal contaminated farmland soils.

Abstract
Carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) cycling functional genes and bacterial and fungal communities during composting with biochar and biogas residue amendments were studied. Correlations between microbial community structure, functional genes and physicochemical properties were investigated by network analysis and redundancy analysis. It was shown that the gene of acsA abundance accounted for about 50% of the C-related genes. Biogas residue significantly decreased the abundance of denitrification gene nirK. Biogas residues can better promote the diversity of bacteria and fungi during composting. Biochar significantly increased the abundance of Humicola. Redundancy analysis indicated that pile temperature, pH, EC were the main physicochemical factors affecting the microbial community. WSC and NO3--N have significant correlation with C, N, P, S functional genes. The research provides a theoretical basis for clarifying the metabolic characteristics of microbial communities during composting and for the application of biochar and biogas residues in composting.

Abstract
Phthalate esters (PAEs) are hazardous organic compounds that are widely added to plastics to enhance their flexibility, temperature, and acidic tolerance. The increase in global consumption and the corresponding environmental pollution of PAEs has caused broad public concerns. As most PAEs accumulate in soil due to their high hydrophobicity, composting is a robust remediation technology for PAE-contaminated soil (efficiency 25%-100%), where microbial activity plays an important role. This review summarized the roles of the microbial community, biodegradation pathways, and specific enzymes involved in the PAE degradation. Also, other green technologies, including biochar adsorption, bioaugmentation, and phytoremediation, for PAE degradation were also presented, compared, and discussed. Composting combined with these technologies significantly enhanced removal efficiency; yet, the properties and roles of each bacterial strain in the degradation, upscaling, and economic feasibility should be clarified in future research.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the dynamic of microbial community and metabolic function in food waste composting amended with traditional Chinese medicine residues (TCMRs). Results suggested that TCMRs addition at up to 10% leads to a higher peak temperature (60.5 °C), germination index (GI) value (119.26%), and a greater reduction in total organic carbon (TOC) content (8.08%). 10% TCMRs significantly induced the fluctuation of bacterial community composition, as well as the fungal community in the thermophilic phase. The addition of 10% TCMRs enhanced the abundance of bacterial genera such as Acetobacter, Bacillus, and Brevundimonas, as well as fungal genera such as Chaetomium, Thermascus, and Coprinopsis, which accelerated lignocellulose degradation and humification degree. Conversely, the growth of Lactobacillus and Pseudomonas was inhibited by 10% TCMRs to weaken the acidic environment and reduce nitrogen loss. Metabolic function analysis revealed that 10% TCMRs promoted the metabolism of carbohydrate and amino acid, especially citrate cycle, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, and cysteine and methionine metabolism. Redundancy analysis showed that the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio was the most significant environmental factor influencing the dynamic of bacterial and fungal communities.

Abstract
The application of additives to regulate the microbial functional composition during composting has attracted much research attention. However, little is known about the succession and role of the fungal community in the laboratory-scale composting of vegetable waste supplemented with pig manure and microbial agents. The purpose of this study was to identify effective additives for improving vegetable waste composting performance and product quality, and to analyze the microbial community succession during composting. The results showed that the combined addition of pig manure and microbial agents (T2 treatment) accelerated the pile temperature increase, enhanced total organic carbon degradation (23.36%), and promoted the maturation of the compost. Furthermore, the T2 treatment increased the activities of most enzymes, reshaped the microbial community, and reduced the relative abundance of potential animal (1.60%) and plant (0.095%) pathogens. The relative abundance of Firmicutes (71.23%) increased with the combined addition of pig manure and microbial agents in the thermophilic stage. In the middle and late stages, Saccharomonospora, Aspergillus, and Thermomyces, which were related to C/N and total phosphorus, were enriched in the T2 treatment. Network analysis demonstrated that the complexity and stability of the fungal network were more evidently increased in the T2 treatment, and Saccharomonospora, Aspergillus, and Microascus were identified as keystone taxa. The keystone taxa associated with extracellular enzymes contributed significantly to compost maturation. These results provide a reference for the application of additives to improve compost safety in pilot-scale composting.

Abstract
The present study evaluates the effect of the mixing ratio of substrates and inoculation with lignocellulolytic bacteria on green waste (GW) and food waste (FW) co-composting. A Box-Behnken design was used to simultaneously optimize the lignocellulose degradation (%LD) and end-product quality. The best operational conditions were 4.85*105 CFU g-1 of Bacillus sp. F3X3 and 1.44*106 CFU g-1 of Paenibacillus sp. F1A5 with a substrate mixture containing 50% GW, 32.5% unprocessed FW, 2.5% processed FW, 13% sawdust, and 2% phosphate rock; with a C/N ratio of 27. Under these conditions, the %LD was 33% and the end-product has pH 8.3, TOC 22,4%, TN 1,7%, and a germination index of 103%. Therefore, the product complies with quality standards for organic fertilizers. The results of this study allow the identification of appropriate strategies to optimize GW composting, increasing the degradation of lignocellulose and improving the end-product quality.

Abstract
Nitrogen loss during composting is closely related to NH4+-N conversion, and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are important microorganisms that promote NH4+-N conversion. Since the biological activity of conventional AOB agents used for compost inoculation declines rapidly during the thermophilic phase of composting, new compound inoculants should be developed that are active during that phase. In the current study, the effects of inoculating cattle manure compost with newly isolated AOB (5%, v/w) [thermotolerant AOB X-2 strain (T-AOB-2), mesophilic AOB X-4 strain (M-AOB-4), and AOB X-2 combined with AOB X-4 (MT-AOB-2-4)] on the conversion of nitrogen, compost maturity, and the resident microbial community were studied. During 35 days of composting, compared with the control, AOB inoculation reduced NH3 emissions by 29.98-46.94%, accelerated the conversion of NH4+-N to NO2--N, increased seed germination values by 13.00-25.90%, and increased the abundance of the microbial community at the thermophilic phase (16.38-68.81%). Network analysis revealed that Bacillaceae play a crucial role in the composting process, with the correlation coefficients: 0.83 (p < 0.05) with NH3, 0.64 (p < 0.05) with NH4+-N, and 0.81 (p < 0.05) with NO2--N. In addition, inoculation with MT-AOB-2-4 notably increased the total nitrogen content of compost, prolonged the sanitation stage, and promoted compost maturity. Hence, MT-AOB-2-4 may be used to increase the microbial community abundance and improve the efficiency of cattle manure composting.

Abstract
Microorganisms are of critical importance during the composting process. The aim of this study was to reveal the bacterial and fungal compositions of a composting pile of food waste digestate and garden waste, where the succession of the microbial communities was monitored using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. We explored the efficiency of composting of different microorganisms to judge whether the composting system was running successfully. The results showed that the composting process significantly changed the bacterial and fungal structure. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidota were the dominant phyla of the bacterial communities, while Ascomycota was the dominant phylum of the fungal communities. Moreover, the highest bacterial and fungal biodiversity occurred in the thermophilic stage. The physical and chemical properties of the final compost products conformed to the national standards of fertilizers. The efficient composting functional microbes, including Cladosporium, Bacillus and Saccharomonospora, emerged to be an important sign of a successfully operating composting system.

Abstract
Bacterial community is a key factor affecting aerobic composting, and understanding bacterial community succession is important to revealing the mechanism of organic matter degradation. In this study, the succession and metabolic characteristics of bacterial communities were explored in 45 days composting of sheep manure and wheat straw by using high-throughput sequencing technology and bioinformatics tools, respectively. Results showed that the alpha diversity of bacterial community significantly decreased in the thermophilic (T2) phase and then recovered gradually in the bio-oxidative (T3) and the maturation (T4) phases. Bacterial communities varied at different stages, but there were 158 genera in common bacterial species. Unclassified_f_Bacillaceae, Oceanobacillus, Bacillus, Pseudogracilibacillus, and Nocardiopsis were identified as keystone bacterial genera. Eleven genera were significantly correlated (p < 0.05), or even extremely significantly correlated (p < 0.001), with the physicochemical factors. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that changes of bacterial community diversity correlated with physicochemical factors. The highest relative abundances were amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism among the metabolic groups in the compost. These results will provide theoretical support for further optimizing sheep manure composting conditions and improving the quality of organic fertilizers.

Abstract
Cinnamon oil is a blend of secondary metabolites and is widely used as spice. Endophytic bacteria are always related to the secondary metabolites production. However, the potential of endophytic bacteria communities for cinnamon oil production during cinnamon shade-drying process is still not clear. In this study, we investigated the composition and metabolic function of endophytic bacterial community during 80-day shade-drying process. The temporal dynamics of essential oil content and its dominant constituents were analyzed. The succession of endophytic bacterial community from d0 to d80 was identified. The influence of endophytic bacterial community evolution on cinnamon oil is significant positive. Predictive functional analysis indicated that shade-drying process was rich in Saccharopolyspora that produce enzymes for the conversion of phenylalanine to cinnamaldehyde. These findings enhance our understanding of the functional bacterial genera and functional genes involved in the production of cinnamon oil during cinnamon shade-drying process.

Abstract
Diatomite (DE) has been used for nitrogen conservation during the composting of feces but its effects on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the associated mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, DE was added at three different proportions (0%, 4%, and 8%) to swine manure during composting. The results showed that adding DE helped to reduce the abundances of ARGs and the maximum decrease (88.99%) occurred with the highest dose. DE amendment promoted the transformation of reducible copper into a more stable form, i.e., the residual fraction, which reduced the selective pressure imposed by copper and further decreased the abundances of ARGs. Tn916/1545 and intI1 were critical genetic components related to ARGs, and thus the reductions in the abundances of ARGs may be attributed to the suppression of horizontal transfer due to the decreased abundances of mobile genetic elements (MGEs). The microbial community structure (bacterial abundance and diversity) played key role in the evolution of ARGs. DE could enhance the competition between hosts and non-hosts of ARGs by increasing the bacterial community diversity. Compared with CK, DE amendment optimized the bacterial community by reducing the abundances of the potential hosts of ARGs and pathogens such as Corynebacterium, thereby improving the safety of the compost product. In addition, KEGG function predictions revealed that adding DE inhibited the metabolic pathway and genes related to ARGs. Thus, composting with 8% DE can reduce the risk of ARG transmission and improve the practical value for agronomic applications.

Abstract
The effects of iron-carbon (Fe-C) particle amendment on organic matter degradation, product quality and functional microbial community in food waste composting were investigated. Fe-C particles (10%) were added to the material and composted for 32 days in a lab-scale composting system. The results suggested that Fe-C particle enhanced organic matter degradation by 12.3%, particularly lignocellulose, leading to a greater humification process (increased by 15.5%). In addition, NO3--N generation was enhanced (15.9%) by nitrification with more active ammonia monooxygenase and nitrite oxidoreductase activities in the cooling and maturity periods. Fe-C particles not only significantly increased the relative abundances of Bacillus and Aspergillus for organic matter decomposition, but also decreased the relative abundances of acid-producing bacteria. RDA analysis demonstrated that the bacterial community was significantly influenced by dissolved organic matter, C/N, NO3--N, humic acid, volatile fatty acids and pH, while electrical conductivity was the key factor affecting the fungal community.

Abstract
Composting is an important method for treating and recycling organic waste, and the use of microbial inoculants can increase the efficiency of composting. Herein, we illustrate an approach that integrate 16S rRNA amplicon metagenomics and selective culture of thermophilic bacteria for the development of inoculants to improve manure composting. The 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing analysis revealed that Firmicutes and Actinobacteria were dominant in the composting mixture, and that different microbial hubs succeeded during the thermophilic stage. All isolated thermophilic bacteria were affiliated with the order Bacillales, such as Geobacillus, Bacillus, and Aeribacillus. These isolated thermophilic bacteria were grouped into 11 phylotypes, which shared >99% sequence identity to 0.15% to 5.32% of 16S rRNA reads by the amplicon sequencing. Three of these phylotypes transiently enriched during the thermophilic stage. Six thermophilic bacteria were selected from the three phylotypes to obtain seven microbial inoculants. Five out of seven of the microbial inoculants enhanced the thermophilic stage of composting by 16.9% to 52.2%. Three-dimensional excitation emission matrix analysis further revealed that two inoculants (Thermoactinomyces intermedius and Ureibacillus thermophilus) stimulated humification. Additionally, the 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing analysis revealed that inoculation with thermophilic bacteria enhanced the succession of the microbial community during composting. In conclusion, 16S rRNA amplicon metagenomics is a useful tool for the development of microbial inoculants to enhance manure composting.

Abstract
Biogas production in the cold regions of China is hindered by low temperatures, which led to slow lignocellulose biotransformation. Cold-adapted lignocellulose degrading microbial complex community LTF-27 was used to investigate the influence of hydrolysis on biogas production. After 5 days of hydrolysis at 15 ± 1 °C, the hydrolysis conversion rate of the corn straw went up to 22.64%, and the concentration of acetic acid increased to 2596.56 mg/L. The methane production rates of total solids (TS) inoculated by LTF-27 reached 204.72 mL/g, which was higher than the biogas (161.34 mL/g), and the control group (CK) inoculated with cultural solution (121.19 mL/g), the methane production rate of volatile solids (VS) increased by 26.88% and 68.92%, respectively. Parabacteroides, Lysinibacillus, and Citrobacter were the main organisms that were responsible for hydrolysis. While numerous other bacteria genera in the gas-producing phase, Macellibacteroides were the most commonly occurring one. Methanosarcina and Methanobacteriaceae contributed 86.25% and 11.80% of the total Archaea abundance during this phase. This study proves the psychrotrophic LTF-27's applicability in hydrolysis and biomass gas production in low temperatures.

Abstract
Food waste (FW) is important object of resource utilization and source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study investigated the effects of biodrying combined with inoculating mature compost (B&M) on the composting efficiency, succession of bacterial communities and their links with metabolism functions as well as the fate of ARGs during FW composting. The results showed that B&M could rapidly raise and maintain high relative abundance of Bacillaceae (66.59-94.44%) as well as composting temperature (45.86-65.86 ℃), so as to achieve the final maturity of FW composting in a short time by regulating microbial carbohydrate (14.02-15.31%) and amino acid metabolism (10.33-12.47%). Network analysis demonstrated that high temperature could effectively inhibit the proliferation and spread of potential bacterial hosts of ARGs and integrons including Lactobacillaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Leuconostocaceae and Corynebacteriaceae during the first two days of composting. As a result, B&M significantly reduced the absolute (72.09-99.47%) and relative abundances (0.31-2.44 logs) of nearly all ARGs especially ermB, tetM, blaCTX-M and blaOXA. Present study deepened the knowledge of ARGs variation, succession and metabolism functions of bacterial communities when B&M processes were used for FW composting, suggesting a promising technology for reducing the transmission risk of ARGs and reaching maturity of FW composting.

Effects of Microbial Inoculation with Different Indigenous Bacillus Species on Physicochemical Characteristics and Bacterial Succession during Short-Term Composting. FERMENTATION-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Bacillus accelerates lignocellulose degradation, promotes the stabilization and resource utilization of compost by secreting enzymes, and plays an important role in compost formation and quality control. This study evaluated enzyme activity, lignocellulosic degradation, and bacterial succession in composting inoculated with different microbial Bacillus agents. They were identified as B. licheniformis, B. subtilis, B. thermoamylovorans, B. thermoruber, and B. hisashii. Four treatments were established, including a CK (uninoculated microorganisms), A (B. licheniformis, B. subtilis, B. thermoamylovorans,and B. hisashii), B (B. subtilis, B. thermoamylovorans, B. thermoruber, and B. hisashii), and C (B. subtilis, B. thermoamylovorans, and B. hisashii), and the composting lasted 7–14 days. Lignin and cellulose degradation rates in B during composting were 17.1% and 36.7% at the cooling stage, respectively. Redundancy analysis showed that degradation of lignocellulose in the thermophilic stage was mainly related to the secretion of lignocellulose-degrading enzymes after microbial inoculation. 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that Bacillus (20.3%) and Thermobifida (20.2%) were the dominant genera. Inoculation with a combination including B. thermoruber was a feasible way to increase lignocellulose degradation and promote maturity in sewage sludge composting.

Abstract
The rapidly growing generation of food wastes has attracted extensive attention. In this context, biochemical processors, using high-temperature aerobic fermentation, has become a beneficial method to treat food waste in situ. However, existing microbial agents do not vary the proportion of strains according to the different food wastes, with this approach affecting the degradation efficiency. In this study, high-temperature resistant strains, with high degradation efficiency, were isolated and screened, before establishing a novel method for preparing personalized microbial formulations. Using the degradation efficiency of wastes after three days as the evaluation standard, 12 groups of Plackett-Burman experiments were used to determine the main effect strains for different types of food waste. Fifteen groups of Box-Behnken experiments were then used to determine their best proportions at which the maximum degradation efficiency occurred. Finally, simulated fermentation experiments were used to check for improvement of the fermentation process by mixing strains according to the personalized proportions. Results of molecular identification and physiological assessments indicated that all the seven strains were Bacillus spp., with no antagonistic effects between them. Based on the Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken tests, three personalized bacterial agents were obtained for different types of food waste. The fermentation results further showed that, compared with the use of equal proportions of strains, a maximum increase of 15.43% in organic matter degradation was achieved after adding personalized proportions. This study provides both theoretical and practical references for the use of personalized microbial agent formulations for high-temperature aerobic fermentation of food wastes, thus providing these microbial agents with good prospects and economic value.
