Abstract
Lignocellulosic waste generation and their improper disposal has accelerated the problems associated with increased greenhouse gas emissions and associated environmental pollution. Constructive ways to manage and mitigate the pollution associated with lignocellulosic waste has propelled the research on biochar production using lignocellulose-based substrates. The sustainability of various biochar production technologies in employing lignocellulosic biomass as feedstock for biochar production not only aids in the lignocellulosic biomass valorization but also helps in carbon neutralization and carbon utilization. Functionalization of biochar through various physicochemical methods helps in improving their functional properties majorly by reducing the size of the biochar particles to nanoscale and modifying their surface properties. The usage of engineered biochar as nano adsorbents for environmental applications like dye absorption, removal of organic pollutants and endocrine disrupting compounds from wastewater has been the thrust areas of research in the past few decades. This review presents a comprehensive outlook on the up-to-date research findings related to the production and engineering of biochar from lignocellulosic biomass and their applications in environmental remediation especially with respect to wastewater treatment. Further a detailed discussion on various biochar activation methods and the future scope of biochar research is presented in this review work.

Abstract
Iron-doped biochar has been widely used as an adsorbent to remove contaminants due to the high adsorption performance, but it still suffers from complicated preparation methods, unstable iron loading, unsatisfactory specific surface area, and uneven distribution of active sites. Here, a novel magnetic porous biochar (FeCS800) with nanostructure on surface was synthesized by one-pot pyrolysis method of corn straw with K2FeO4, and used in orange G (OG) and tetracycline (TC) adsorption. FeCS800 exhibited outstanding adsorption capacities for OG and TC after K2FeO4 activation and the adsorption data were fitted satisfactorily to Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacities of FeCS800 for OG and TC were around 303.03 mg/g and 322.58 mg/g, respectively, at 25 °C and pH 7.0, which were 16.27 and 24.61 times higher than that before modification. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of OG/TC by FeCS800 were thermodynamically favorable and highly spontaneous. And the adsorption capacity of OG and TC by FeCS800 remained 77% and 81% after 5 cycles, respectively, indicating that FeCS800 had good stability. The outstanding adsorption properties and remarkable reusability of FeCS800 show its great potential to be an economic and environmental adsorbent in contaminants removal.

Abstract
In this study, magnetic inulin/Mg-Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (MILDH) was synthesized for the adsorption of ciprofloxacin. The application of various analytical techniques confirmed the successful formation of MILDH. For the optimization of controllable factors, Taguchi design was applied and optimum values were obtained as equilibrium time─100 min, adsorbent dose─20 mg, and ciprofloxacin concentration─30 mg/L. The highest capacity of the material was recorded as 196.19 mg/g at 298 K. Langmuir model (R2 = 0.9669-0.9832) fitted best as compared to the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.9588-0.9657), concluded the monolayer adsorption of ciprofloxacin on MILDH. Statistical physics model M 2 was found to fit best to measured data (R2 = 0.9982-0.9989), indicating that the binding of ciprofloxacin took place on two types of receptor sites (n1 and n2). The multidocking mechanism with horizontal position was suggested on the first receptor site (n1 < 1), while multimolecular adsorption of ciprofloxacin lying vertically on the second receptor site (n2 > 1) at all temperatures. The adsorption energies (E1 = 22.79-27.20 kJ/mol; E2 = 18.00-19.46 kJ/mol) illustrated that the adsorption of ciprofloxacin onto MILDH occurred through physical forces. Best fitting of the fractal-like pseudo-first-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9982-0.9992) indicated that the adsorption of ciprofloxacin happened on the MILDH surface having different energies. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis further confirmed the adsorption mechanism of ciprofloxacin onto MILDH.

Preparation of mesoporous biogas residue biochar via a self-template strategy for efficient removal of ciprofloxacin: Effect of pyrolysis temperature. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2024; 360:121140. Abstract
Biochar preparation and application is an anticipated pathway for the resource utilization of biogas residue. In this study, biochars were prepared by the pyrolysis of biogas residue from food waste anaerobic digestion (named as BRBCs) under various pyrolysis temperatures (300, 500, 700, and 900 °C), and the effect of pyrolysis temperatures on the physicochemical characteristics of BRBCs was examined. The adsorption performance toward ciprofloxacin (CIP), a typical antibiotic in waterbodies, was also investigated. The results showed that pyrolysis temperature significantly changed the physicochemical properties of BRBCs. In addition, the minerals in the biogas residue, especially SiO2, were rearranged to form a mesoporous structure in biochar through a self-template strategy (without activator). BRBC prepared at 900 °C exhibited a high specific surface area and pore volume, well-developed mesopore structure, and more carbon structure defects, and exhibited the largest CIP adsorption capacity with 70.29 mg g-1, which was ascribed to the combined interaction of pore diffusion, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, complexation, and electrostatic forces. Furthermore, the adsorption of CIP by BRBC900 was well described by two-compartment kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. BRBC900 showed good adsorption performance toward CIP at pH 7-9. The adsorption of CIP by BRBC is a spontaneous, exothermic, entropy-increasing process. Moreover, BRBC also presented a good recycling potential. Therefore, the preparation of mesoporous biochar based on a self-template strategy not only provides an option for the resource utilization of biogas residue but also offers a new option for the treatment of antibiotic wastewater.

Abstract
Iron-doping modification is a prevailing approach for improving adsorption capability of biochar with environmental friendliness, but usually requires high temperature and suffers from iron aggregation. Herein, a highly adsorptive biochar was manufactured via sequential disperse impregnation of iron by refluxing and pyrolysis at low temperature for eliminating tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution. Iron oxides and hydroxides were impregnated and stably dispersed on the carbon matrix as pyrolyzed at 200 °C, meanwhile abundant oxygen and nitrogen functional groups were generated on surface. The iron-doped biochar exhibited up to 891.37 mg/g adsorption capacity at pH 5, and could be recycled with high adsorption capability. The adsorption of TC should be mostly contributed to the hydrogen bonding of N/O functional groups and the hydrogen bonding/coordination of iron oxides/hydroxides. This would provide a valuable guide for dispersedly doping iron and conserving functional groups on biochar, and a super iron-doped biochar was prepared with superior recyclability.

Abstract
Antibiotics are widely prioritized pharmaceuticals frequently adopted in medication for addressing numerous ailments of humans and animals. However, the non-judicious disposal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) with concentration levels exceeding threshold limit in an aqueous environment has been the matter of growing concern nowadays. CIP is found in various waterways with appreciable mobility due to its limited decay in solidified form. Hence, the effective eradication strategy of this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory antibiotic from aqueous media is pivotal for preventing the users and the biosphere from their hazardous impacts. Reportedly several customary techniques like reverse osmosis, precipitation, cross-filtration, nano-filtration, ion exchange, microbial remediation, and adsorption have been employed to eliminate CIP from water. Out of them, adsorption is ascertained to be a potential method because of lesser preliminary investment costs, ease of operation, greater efficiency, less energy usage, reduced chemical and biological slurry production, and ready availability of precursor materials. Towards remediation of ciprofloxacin-laden water, plenty of researchers have used different adsorbents. However, the present-day challenge is opting the promising sorbent and its application towards industrial scale-up which is vital to get reviewed. In this article, adsorbents of diverse origins are reviewed in terms of their performances in CIP removal. The review stresses the impact of various factors on sorptive assimilation of CIP, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, mechanism of ionic interaction, contrivances for CIP detection, cost estimation and reusability assessments of adsorbents also that may endorse the next-generation investigators to decide the efficacious, environmental appealing and cost-competitive adsorbents for effective riddance of CIP from wastewater.

Abstract
This study demonstrated the design and fabrication of flower-like Ni/Mn-MOFs materials, and three-dimensional ultrathin flower-like Ni/Mn/MC microspheres were fabricated by embedding metal or metal oxide nanoparticles into a porous carbon skeleton via high-temperature pyrolysis at 600 °C and used for the electrocatalytic degradation of ceftriaxone sodium. This unique ultrathin porous flower-like structure can expose more active sites, provide rapid ion/electron transfer, and improve electrocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, the excellent electrical conductivity of the carbon skeleton, as well as the rational composition and synergistic effect of the two components, can promote the generation of active radicals (•OH and •O2-) in the reaction system, which accelerates the electrochemical degradation process and improves the electrocatalytic degradation performance. The results showed that the Ni/Mn/MC-5:1 composite prepared when the molar ratio of Ni: Mn was 5:1 exhibited the best electrocatalytic degradation performance for the degradation of sodium ceftriaxone. The composites showed 98.2% degradation of ceftriaxone sodium in 120 min and maintained sound degradation after 20 cycles. Therefore, we concluded that this novel multicomponent composite has good electrocatalytic activity and stability for the degradation of antibiotic wastewater.

Abstract
Adsorption is one of the most effective methods for ecotoxic antibiotics removal, while developing high-performance adsorbents with excellent adsorption capacity is indispensable. As the unavoidable by-product of wastewater, sewage sludge has dual properties of pollution and resources. In this study, dyeing sludge waste was converted to biochar by KOH activation and pyrolysis, and used as an efficient adsorbent for aqueous antibiotics removal. The optimized dyeing sludge-derived biochar (KSC-8) has excellent specific surface area (1178.4 m2/g) and the adsorption capacity for tetracycline (TC) could reach up to 1081.3 mg/g, which is four and five times higher than those without activation, respectively. The PSO (pseudo-second-order) kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model fitted better to the experimental data. The obtained KSC-8 has stabilized adsorption capacity for long-term fixed-bed experiments, and maintained 86.35% TC removal efficiency after five adsorption-regeneration cycles. The adsorption mechanism involves electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions and pore filling. This work is a green and eco-friendly way as converting the waste to treat waste in aiming of simultaneous removal of antibiotics and resource recovery of dyeing sludge.

Abstract
2D-Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets intercalated with sodium ions (SI-Ti3C2Tx) were synthesized and utilized in simultaneous adsorption and electrochemical regeneration with ciprofloxacin (CPX). The primary focus of this study is to investigate the long-term stability of SI-Ti3C2Tx MXene and to propose the underlying regeneration mechanisms. The successful synthesis of Ti3AlC2, Ti3C2Tx MXene, and SI-Ti3C2Tx MXene was confirmed using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical regeneration parameters such as charge passed, regeneration time, current density, and electrolyte composition were optimized with values of 787.5 C g-1, 7.5 min, 10 mA cm-2, and 2.5w/v% sodium chloride, respectively, enabling the complete regeneration of the SI-Ti3C2Tx MXene. In addition, the electrochemical regeneration significantly enhanced CPX removal from the SI-Ti3C2Tx MXene owing to partial amorphization, disorderliness, increased functional groups, delamination, and defect creation in the structure. Thus, the synthesized nano-adsorbent has proven helpful in practical water treatment with optimized electrochemical regeneration processes.

In this study, an efficient lanthanum ferrate magnetic biochar (FLBC) was synthesised from crab shells using an ultrasound-assisted sol-gel method to study its performance and mechanisms for phosphate and TC adsorption in aqueous solutions in mono/bis systems. According to the Langmuir model, the developed exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 65.62 mg/g for phosphate and 234.1 mg/g for TC (pH:7.0 ± 0.1, and 25 °C). Further, it exhibited high resistance to interference and pH suitability. In practical swine wastewater applications, whereby the concentrations of phosphate and TC are 37 and 19.97 mg/L, respectively, the proposed material demonstrated excellent performance. In addition, electrostatic adsorption, chemical precipitation and ligand exchange were noted to be the main mechanisms for phosphate adsorption by FLBC, whereas hydrogen bonding and π-π interaction were the main adsorption mechanisms for TC adsorption. Therefore, this study successfully prepared a novel and efficient adsorbent for phosphate and TC.

Abstract
Cynodon dactylon, an invasive species, exhibits its robust adaptability, reproduction and nutrient regime against the local species. Taking advantage of this harmful grass as a raw precursor to produce valuable materials for wastewater treatment has paid much attention. Herein, we report on the fabrication of Cynodom dactylon derived MgFe2O4@AC with a main goal of effective removal of ciprofloxacin antibiotic from water. Our findings showed that MgFe2O4@ACK1 composites attained mesoporous textures, high specific surface areas (884.3-991.6 m2 g-1), and MgFe2O4-20%@ACK1 was the most effective with a very high removal efficiency of 96.7%. The Elovich model was suitable for describing the kinetic of adsorption with (Radj)2 of 0.9988. Meanwhile, the isotherm data obeyed the Langmuir model corresponding to (Radj)2 of 0.9993. Qmax value of MgFe2O4-20%@ACK1 was determined at 211.67 mg g-1. The proposed adsorption mechanism primarily comprises five routes as follows, (i) pore-filling, (ii) π-π interaction, (iii) electrostatic interaction, (iv) hydrogen bonding, and (v) hydrophobic interaction. MgFe2O4-20%@ACK1 adsorbent could reuse with three cycles. We recommend that MgFe2O4/ACs derived from Cynodom dactylon could be high-efficiency adsorbents for the elimination of antibiotics.

Abstract
Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peracetic acid (PAA) has been extensively concerned for the degradation of organic pollutants. In this study, metallic iron-modified sludge biochar (Fe-SBC) was employed to activate PAA for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The characterization results indicated that FeO and Fe2O3 were successfully loaded on the surface of the sludge biochar (SBC). Fe-SBC/PAA system achieved 92% SMX removal after 30 min. The pseudo-first-order kinetic reaction constant of the Fe-SBC/PAA system was 7.34 × 10-2 min-1, which was 2.4 times higher than the SBC/PAA system. The degradation of SMX was enhanced with increasing the Fe-SBC dosage and PAA concentration. Apart from Cl-, NO3- and SO42- had a negligible influence on the degradation of SMX. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques identified the existence of reactive species, of which CH3C(O)OO•, 1O2, and O2•- were dominant reactive species in Fe-SBC/PAA system. The effect of different water matrices on the removal of SMX was investigated. The removal of SMX in tap water and lake water were 79% and 69%, respectively. Four possible pathways for the decay of SMX were presented according to the identification of oxidation products. In addition, following the ecological structure-activity relationship model (ECOSAR) procedure and the germination experiments with lettuce seeds to predict the toxicity of the intermediates. The acute and chronic ecotoxicity of SMX solution was dramatically diminished by processing with Fe-SBC/PAA system. In general, this study offered a prospective strategy for the degradation of organic pollutants.

High-performance biochar-loaded MgAl-layered double oxide adsorbents derived from sewage sludge towards nanoplastics removal: Mechanism elucidation and QSAR modeling. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 901:165971. Abstract
Utilization of sewage sludge for the fabrication of environmental functional materials is highly desirable to achieve pollution mitigation and resource recovery. In the present work, we introduced a novel MgAl-layered double oxide (LDO)@biochar composite adsorbent in-situ fabricated from Al-rich sewage sludge, and its excellent application in nanoplastics adsorption. Initially, fifteen model contaminants with varied conjugate structures, hydrogen bonding and ionic properties were selected for an investigation of adsorption behavior and adsorption selectivity on LDO@biochar. Structural variation of LDO@biochar suggested reconstruction of the layered double hydroxide (LDH) during the adsorption process due to the "memory effect". Under the synergy of LDH and biochar, the contaminants were adsorbed via multiple adsorbent-adsorbate interactions, including anion exchange, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π-π conjugation. Then, a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model was constructed by integrating the number of hydrogen bond acceptors, polarity surface area, number of aromatic rings, and Fukui index f(-)x together to reflect the affinity of each contaminant to the adsorbent. Guided by the QSAR model, the negatively charged polystyrene nanoplastics with continuously conjugated aromatic rings were predicted to be effectively adsorbed on LDO@biochar. Experimental tests confirmed a great capacity of LDO@biochar towards the polystyrene nanoplastics, given the equilibrium adsorption capacity as high as 360 mg g-1 at 30-50 °C. This work not only opened up a new avenue for sustainable utilization of sewage sludge towards high-performance environmental functional materials, but also demonstrated the potential of the QSAR analysis as a rapid and accurate approach for guiding the application of an adsorbent to new emerging containments.

Abstract
A novel oxidative magnetization, involving phosphomolybdic acid and Fe(NO3)3 co-promoted pyrolysis, was established to manufacture highly adsorptive magnetic biochars for adsorbing aqueous tetracycline, methylene blue, and Cr6+. The modification of phosphomolybdic acid greatly boosted the formation of γ-Fe2O3 and oxygen containing groups with enhancement of specific surface area and pore volume at 400 °C. Importantly, γ-Fe2O3 was stably fixed on surface in quasi-nanoscale. The oxidized magnetic biochar displayed 631.53, 158.45, 155.13 mg/g adsorption capabilities for tetracycline, methylene blue, and Cr6+ with 22.79 emu/g saturation magnetization, respectively. Oxygen containing groups and quasi-nanoscale γ-Fe2O3 served as key adsorption sites for these pollutants. A general oxidative magnetization was established for manufacturing high-performance magnetic biochar through phosphomolybdic acid/Fe(NO3)3 co-promoted pyrolysis at relatively low temperature.

Abstract
Vascular plants account for more than 80% of all biomass on earth and are potential precursors of biochar. However, the changes of vascular bundle have received less attention during the preparation of biochar. In this study, loofah sponge (LS), tangerine pith (TP), and rhodiola rosea (RR), were selected to show the role of vascular bundle in biochar through the pretreatment of vascular bundle. The results showed that the active biochar prepared with vascular bundle protection had high adsorption capacity for methylene blue (LS: 953.53 mg/g, TP: 714.77 mg/g, RR: 583.49 mg/g). The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method was used to measure the specific surface area (SSA) of active biochar. The SSA of LS active biochar prepared by vascular bundle protection was 2262.67 m2/g, and has high adsorption properties under different conditions. In conclusion, the protection of vascular bundle during biochar preparation is important to improve the utilization of biological resources and environmental adsorption.

Abstract
Quinolone antibiotics are emerging environmental contaminants, which cause serious harm to the ecological environment and human health. How to effectively remove these emerging pollutants from water remains a major challenge worldwide. In this study, a novel Fe/Ti biochar composite (Fe/Ti-MBC) was prepared by facile one-step co-pyrolysis of wood chips with hematite and titanium dioxide (TiO2) for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and norfloxacin (NOR) in water. The results showed that the degradation efficiencies of Fe/Ti-MBC to CIP and NOR were 88.4% and 88.0%, respectively. The π-π interactions and polar interactions are the main adsorption mechanisms for CIP and NOR. In the photocatalytic process, h+ and ·OH are the main active substances for the oxidative degradation of CIP and NOR. This study shows that Fe/Ti-MBC is an effective and recyclable composite, providing a novel alternative way for antibiotics degradation.

Abstract
Adsorption was an available way to eliminate Tetracycline (TC) from waste water. Suaeda biochar (800SBC) and iron modified biochar (Fe-800SBC) were prepared using pyrolysis under oxygen-limiting conditions. BET and SEM showed that the surface of Fe-800SBC was rougher, and the specific surface area (SBET) was 7 times that of 800SBC. There existed pore filling, ion exchange, metal ion complexation, hydrogen bonds and cation-π interaction mechanism. Both 800SBC and Fe-800SBC conformed to quasi-second-order kinetics model, belonged to chemisorption. Fe-800SBC conformed to Elovich model too. The adsorption process of 800SBC conformed to Freundlich and Sips L-F models, Fe-800SBC conformed to the Sips L-F and Temkin models, identifying the presence of physical and chemical adsorption during adsorption. Response surface method (RSM) was used to optimize important process parameters. The quadratic model was sufficient to predict TC removal response in the range of studied parameters.

Abstract
Understanding the impact of abundant inherent moisture in sewage sludge on the physicochemical properties and adsorption applications of sludge-derived biochar (SDB) contributed significantly to promoting economical sludge reuse. The moisture (0-80%) contributed to the development of micropore and mesopore in SDB at 400 °C, resulting in a maximum increase in specific surface area (SSA) and total pore volume (TPV) of SDB by 38.47% (84.811-117.437 m2/g) and 92.60% (0.0905-0.1743 m3/g), respectively. At 600/800 °C, moisture only facilitated mesopore formation, while was exacerbated with increasing moisture content. Despite reduction in SSA during this stage, TPV increased by a maximum of 20.47% (0.1700-0.2048 m3/g). The presence of moisture during pyrolysis led to an increase in the formation of 3-5 thickened benzene rings and defective structures in SDB, along with more C=O, O-C=O/-OH, pyrrole N, pyridine N, and thiophene. As a result, moisture (40%/80%) increased the maximum adsorption capacity (76.2694-88.0448/90.1190 mg/g) of SDB (600 °C) for tetracycline, mainly due to enhanced pore filling effect and hydrogen bonding induced by improved physicochemical properties. This study offered a novel approach for optimizing the performance of SDB adsorption applications by manipulating the sludge moisture, which is critical for practical sludge management.

Abstract
To address the challenges associated with the weak affinity and difficult separation of biochar, we developed chitosan-biochar hydrogel beads (CBHBs) as an efficient solution for removing reactive brilliant blue (RBB KN-R) from wastewater. The adsorption behavior and mechanism of RBB KN-R onto CBHBs were extensively studied. Notably, the adsorption capacity of RBB KN-R showed pH-dependence, and the highest adsorption capacity was observed at pH 2. The adsorption process was well fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the intraparticle diffusion model. Film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion were both responsible for the adsorption of RBB KN-R onto CBHBs. At 298.15 K, the maximum adsorption capacity qm was determined to be 140.74 mg/g, with higher temperatures favoring the adsorption process. A complex mechanism involving π-π interactions, electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding was found to contribute to the overall adsorption process. The experimental data discovered the coexisting substances and elevated ionic strength hindered the adsorption capacity. Significantly, after three cycles of adsorption-desorption, the CBHBs maintained an adsorption capacity above 95% for RBB KN-R. These promising results imply that CBHBs are a durable and cost-effective adsorbent for efficient removal of dyes from wastewater.

Removal of oxytetracycline from wastewater by biochar modified with biosynthesized iron oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes: Modification performance and adsorption mechanism. Abstract
The pollution problem of oxytetracycline (OTC) from wastewater becomes more serious, so an efficient, economical, and green adsorption material is urgently explored. In this study, the multilayer porous biochar (OBC) was prepared by coupling carbon nanotubes with iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized by Aquabacterium sp. XL4 to modify corncobs under medium temperature (600 °C) conditions. The adsorption capacity of OBC could reach 72.59 mg g-1 after preparation and operation parameters were optimized. In addition, various adsorption models suggested that OTC removal resulted from the combined effect of chemisorption, multilayer interaction, and disordered diffusion. Meanwhile, the OBC was fully characterized and exhibited a large specific surface area (237.51 m2 g-1), abundant functional groups, stable crystal structure, high graphitization, and mild magnetic properties (0.8 emu g-1). The OTC removal mechanisms mainly included electrostatic interactions, ligand exchange, π-π bonding reactions, hydrogen bonds, and complexation. pH and coexistence substance experiments revealed that the OBC possesses a wide pH adaptation range and excellent anti-interference ability. Finally, the safety and reusability of OBC were confirmed by repeated experiments. In summary, OBC as a biosynthetic material shows considerable potential for application in the field of purifying new pollution from wastewater.

Abstract
The treatment of combined antibiotics and heavy metals pollution is a critical challenge. Herein, iron and nitrogen co-doped biochar (Fe/N-BC) was synthesized using rape straw as precursor, and applied for the adsorption of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Cu2+ in single and binary systems. The qmax for CIP and Cu2+ were 46.45 mg g-1 and 30.77 mg g-1, respectively. Adsorption decreased in a binary matrix, indicating that there was a competitive effect between CIP and Cu2+, which might be due to CIP and Cu2+ sharing similar active adsorption sites on Fe/N-BC. Interestingly, CIP and Cu2+ co-adsorption was a pH-dependent process. Fe/N-BC has potential to highly selectively separate CIP/Cu2+ from mixed solutions through adjusting pH values. Furthermore, adsorption mechanisms were systematically investigated in this research. This research could help to provide a deeper understanding of the synchronously removing specific antibiotics and heavy metals by biochar adsorbents.

Abstract
Antibiotic pollution has become a global eco-environmental issue. To reduce sulfonamide antibiotics in water and improve resource utilization of solid wastes, phosphogypsum modified biochar composite (PMBC) was prepared via facile one-step from distillers grains, wood chips, and phosphogypsum. The physicochemical properties of PMBC were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Zeta potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), etc. The influencing factors, adsorption behaviors, and mechanisms of sulfadiazine (SD) and sulfamethazine (SMT) onto PMBC were studied by batch and fixed bed column adsorption experiments. The results showed that the removal rates of SD and SMT increased with the increase of phosphogypsum proportion, while decreased with the increase of solution pH. The maximum adsorption capacities of modified distillers grain and wood chips biochars for SD were 2.98 and 4.18 mg/g, and for SMT were 4.40 and 8.91 mg/g, respectively, which was 9.0-22.3 times that of pristine biochar. Fixed bed column results demonstrated that PMBC had good adsorption capacities for SD and SMT. When the solution flow rate was 2.0 mL/min and the dosage of PMBC was 5.0 g, the removal rates of SD and SMT by modified wood chips biochar were both higher than 50% in 4 hr. The main mechanisms of SD and SMT removal by PMBC are hydrogen bonding, π-π donor-acceptor, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobic interaction. This study provides an effective method for the removal of antibiotics in water and the resource utilization of phosphogypsum.

Abstract
Acid mine drainage (AMD) sludge can be used to prepare adsorbent materials for the removal of heavy metals in water, which is an effective means for its resource utilization. Magnetic modified biochar (MMB), which can be recovered by magnetic separation, was prepared from sludge generated from the carbonate rock neutralization treatment of AMD and rice straw agricultural waste. Unmodified biochar (UMB) was obtained from rice straw and chemically modified and treated by ultraviolet radiation to produce MMB. The Pb2+ and Zn2+ adsorption capacities of UMB and MMB were investigated. Simultaneously, the materials were characterized by SEM, FTIR, BET, and ZETA. The results showed that the specific surface area (130.89 m2·g-1) and pore volume (0.22 m2·g-1) of MMB were significantly increased compared to those of UMB (9.10 m2·g-1 and 0.05 m2·g-1, respectively). FTIR images showed that MMB was successfully loaded with Fe3O4. The adsorption process of Pb2+ and Zn2+ onto MMB was consistent with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and second-order kinetic models, with maximum adsorption capacities of 329.65 mg·g-1 and 103.67 mg·g-1, respectively. In a binary system of Pb2+ and Zn2+, MMB preferentially binds Pb2+. The adsorption efficiencies of MMB reached >80% for Pb2+ and Zn2+.

Abstract
Significant selectivity, reasonable surface modification and increased structural porosity were three key factors to improve the competitiveness of biochar in the adsorption field. In this study, a hydrothermal bamboo-derived biochar modified with phosphate groups (HPBC) was synthesized using "one-can" strategy. BET showed that this method could effectively increase the specific surface area (137.32 m2 g-1) and simulation of wastewater experiments indicated HPBC had an excellent selectivity for U(VI) (70.35%), which was conducive to removal of U(VI) in real and complex environments. The accurate matchings of pseudo-second-order kinetic model, thermodynamic model and Langmuir isotherm showed that at 298 K, pH = 4.0, the adsorption process dominated by chemical complexation and monolayer adsorption was spontaneous, endothermic and disordered. Saturated adsorption capacity of HPBC could reach 781.02 mg g-1 within 2 h. The introduction of phosphoric acid and citric acid by "one-can" method not only provided abundant -PO4 to assist adsorption, but also activated oxygen-containing groups on the surface of the bamboo matrix. Results showed that adsorption mechanism of U(VI) by HPBC included electrostatic action and chemical complexation involving P-O, PO and ample oxygen-containing functional groups. Therefore, HPBC with high phosphorus content, outstanding adsorption performance, excellent regeneration, remarkable selectivity and green value provided a novel solution for the field of radioactive wastewater treatment.

Abstract
An inexpensive and environmentally friendly composite synthesized from rice husk, impregnated with montmorillonite and activated by carbon dioxide, was investigated for the removal of azithromycin from an aqueous solution. Various techniques were used to characterize adsorbents in detail. The sorption process was primarily regulated by the solution pH, pollutant concentration, contact duration, adsorbent dose, and solution temperature. The equilibrium data were best analyzed using the nonlinear Langmuir and Sips (R2 > 0.97) isotherms, which revealed that adsorption occurs in a homogenous manner. The adsorption capacity of pristine biochar and carbon dioxide activated biochar-montmorillonite composite was 33.4 mg g-1 and 44.73 mg g-1, respectively. Kinetic studies identified that the experimental data obeyed the pseudo-second-order and Elovich models (R2 > 0.98) indicating the chemisorption nature of adsorbents. The thermodynamic parameters determined the endothermic and spontaneous nature of the reaction. The ion exchange, π-π electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions, hydrogen-bonding, and electrostatic interactions were the plausible mechanisms responsible for the adsorption process. This study revealed that a carbon dioxide activated biochar-montmorillonite composite may be used as an effective, sustainable, and economical adsorbent for the removal of azithromycin from polluted water.

Abstract
The accumulated antibiotics in the aquatic environment pose great threat to human and ecological health, boosting the development of porous materials for antibiotic removal. Mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great promise in adsorption, which, however, usually need supramolecular design or cooperative template strategy for synthesis. Here we report the successful construction of mesoporous zirconium based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) via a simple solvent-dependent strategy. Regulation of the ratio of water to N, N-dimethylacetamide during synthesis determined the porous structure of the synthesized MOFs. Systematic characterizations including SEM, FTIR, XRD and nitrogen sorption isotherm were carried out for structure analysis of the MOFs. With water fraction of 20% (v/v), the obtained Zr-MOF exhibited the highest adsorption capacity (Qmax of 337.0 mg⋅g-1) towards tetracycline (TC). The adsorption kinetics fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the adsorption isotherms fitted the Freundlich model well. Adsorption mechanism investigation revealed that the abundant Zr-OH groups stemming from coordination defects mainly accounted for TC adsorption. The hydrogen bonding interaction between TC and Zr-MOF and the generated mesopores contributed to the satisfactory adsorption capacity. This work is anticipated to provide insights on facile synthesis of mesoporous MOFs and application in environmental remediation.

Abstract
A new N-doped biochar derived from sugarcane bagasse (NSB) was prepared by one-pot pyrolysis with sugarcane bagasse as feedstock, melamine as nitrogen source and NaHCO3 as pore-forming agent, and then NSB was used to adsorb ciprofloxacin (CIP) in water. The optimal preparation conditions of NSB were determined based on the evaluation index of adsorbability of NSB for CIP. SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, XPS and BET characterizations were used to analyze the physicochemical properties of the synthetic NSB. It was found that the prepared NSB had excellent pore structure, high specific surface area and more nitrogenous functional groups. Meanwhile, it was demonstrated that the synergistic interaction between melamine and NaHCO3 increased the pores of NSB and the largest surface area of NSB was 1712.19 m2/g. The CIP adsorption capacity of 212 mg/g was obtained under optimal parameters as follows: NSB amount 0.125 g/L, initial pH 6.58, adsorption temperature 30 °C, CIP initial concentration 30 mg/L and adsorption time 1 h. The isotherm and kinetics studies elucidated that the adsorption of CIP conformed both D-R model and Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The high CIP adsorption capacity of NSB for CIP was due to the combined filling pore, π-π conjugation and hydrogen bonding. All results demonstrated that adsorption of CIP by the low-cost N-doped biochar of NSB is a reliable technology for the disposal of CIP wastewater.

However, there is little information about how the biochar, made from different tropical biomass, facilitates tetracycline and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal from aqueous solution. In this study, biochar was prepared from cassava stalk, rubber wood and sugarcane bagasse, then further modified with KOH to remove tetracycline and Cr(VI). Results showed that pore characteristics and redox capacity of biochar were improved after modification. KOH-modified rubber wood biochar had the highest removal of tetracycline and Cr(VI), 1.85 times and 6 times higher than unmodified biochar. Tetracycline and Cr(VI) can be removed by electrostatic adsorption, reduction reaction, π-π stacking interaction, hydrogen bonding, pore filling effect and surface complexation. These observations will improve the understanding of the simultaneous removal of tetracycline and anionic heavy metals from wastewater.

Abstract
Tetracycline (TC) and sugarcane bagasse had both exerted enormous strain on environmental security. In this work, new composite adsorbent designed by impregnating bio-waste bagasse with magnesium-aluminum layered double oxides (BC-MA) was innovatively brought forward for TC removal. Benefiting from the abundant adsorption sites supplied by developed pores structure (0.308 cm3·g-1), enlarged surface area (256.8 m2·g-1) and reinforced functional groups, the maximum adsorption amount of BC-MA for TC reached 250.6 mg g-1. Moreover, BC-MA displayed desirable adsorption capacity in diverse water environments coupled with excellent sustainable regeneration ability. The absorption process of TC by BC-MA was spontaneous and endothermic, and the pivotal rate-limiting stage pertained to intraparticle diffusion. The mechanisms proposed here mainly concerned π-π interactions, pore filling, complexation and hydrogen bonding. These findings suggested that the synthesis of modified biochar from bagasse would offer new opportunities for simultaneous waste resource reuse and water pollution control.

Abstract
Water pollution has invaded seas, rivers, and tap water worldwide. This work employed commercial Mesquite charcoal as a low-cost precursor for fabricating Mesquite carbon nanoparticles (MUCNPs) using a ball-milling process. The scanning electron energy-dispersive microscopy results for MUCNPs revealed a particle size range of 52.4-75.0 nm. The particles were composed mainly of carbon with trace amounts of aluminum, potassium, calcium, titanium, and zinc. The X-ray diffraction peaks at 26.76 and 43.28 2θ° ascribed to the (002) and (100) planes indicated a crystalized graphite phase. Furthermore, the lack of FT-IR vibrations above 3000 cm-1 showed that the MUCNPs were not functionalized. The MUCNPs' pore diameter, volume, and surface area were 114.5 Ǻ, 0.363 cm3 g-1, and 113.45 m2 g-1. The batch technique was utilized to investigate MUCNPs' effectiveness in removing chlorohexidine gluconate (CHDNG) from water, which took 90 min to achieve equilibrium and had an adsorption capacity of 65.8 mg g-1. The adsorption of CHDNG followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, with the rate-limiting step being diffusion in the liquid film. The Langmuir isotherm dominated the CHDNG adsorption on the MUCNPs with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. The thermodynamic studies revealed that CHDNG adsorption onto the MUCNPs was exothermic and favorable, and its spontaneity increased inversely with CHDNG concentration. The ball-milling-made MUCNPs demonstrated consistent efficiency through regeneration-reuse cycles.

Abstract
The effective removal of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) from water is of great significance and remains a big challenge. In this work, a novel magnetized biochar (magnetic functionalized carbon microsphere, MF-CMS) was prepared by the coupling hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis activation of starch-rich rice waste using ZnCl2 and FeCl3 as activators. As the MF-CMS dose was 2.0 g/L, the initial concentration of TCs was 100 mg/L, the removal rates of tetracycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline were 96.02%, 96.10%, 96.52%, and 85.88%, respectively. The best modeled on pseudo second order, Langmuir adsorption model, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models suggested that both chemisorption and physisorption occurred in all removal processes, in which chemisorption dominated. TCs were efficiently adsorbed through the combined effects of pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π-π interactions, and complexation reactions of surface functional groups (such as γ-Fe2O3 and FeOOH). The removal rates of TCs after five cycles approximately decreased by 20%. And the cycling and metal ion release experiments of MF-CMS indicated that MF-CMS had good reusability, stability, and safety. The estimated cost of preparing MF-CMS is 5.91 USD per kg, and 1 kg of MF-CMS (consuming 8 kg of waste rice) can approximately treat 0.55 tons of TCs wastewater. Overall, the magnetic biochar derived from starch-rich rice waste as an adsorbent has promising and effective for the removal of TCs from water, but also provides a new idea for the resourceful treatment of solid waste.

Abstract
To effectively remove methylene blue (MB) from dye wastewater, a novel activated carbon (BAC) was manufactured through co-pyrolysis of bamboo shoot shell and K2FeO4. The activation process was optimized to a temperature of 750 °C and an activation time of 90 min based on its excellent adsorption capacity of 560.94 mg/g with a yield of 10.03%. The physicochemical and adsorption properties of BACs were investigated. The BAC had an ultrahigh specific surface area of 2327.7 cm2/g and abundant active functional groups. The adsorption mechanisms included chemisorption and physisorption. The Freundlich model could be used to describe the isothermal adsorption of MB. The kinetics confirmed that the adsorption of MB belonged to the pseudo-second-order model. Intra-particle diffusion was the main rate-limiting step. The thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption process was endothermic and temperature was beneficial for the improvement of adsorption property. Furthermore, the removal rate of MB was 63.5% after three cycles. The BAC will have great potential for commercial development for purifying dye wastewater.

Preparation of Biochar with Developed Mesoporous Structure from Poplar Leaf Activated by KHCO 3 and Its Efficient Adsorption of Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride. Molecules 2023; 28:molecules28073188. Abstract
The effective removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) from the water environment is of great importance. Adsorption as a simple, stable, and cost-effective technology is regarded as an important method for removing OTC. Herein, a low-cost biochar with a developed mesoporous structure was synthesized via pyrolysis of poplar leaf with potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) as the activator. KHCO3 can endow biochar with abundant mesopores, but excessive KHCO3 cannot continuously promote the formation of mesoporous structures. In comparison with all of the prepared biochars, PKC-4 (biochar with a poplar leaf to KHCO3 mass ratio of 5:4) shows the highest adsorption performance for OTC as it has the largest surface area and richest mesoporous structure. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich equilibrium model are more consistent with the experimental data, which implies that the adsorption process is multi-mechanism and multi-layered. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacities of biochar are slightly affected by pH changes, different metal ions, and different water matrices. Moreover, the biochar can be regenerated by pyrolysis, and its adsorption capacity only decreases by approximately 6% after four cycles. The adsorption of biochar for OTC is mainly controlled by pore filling, though electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction are also involved. This study realizes biomass waste recycling and highlights the potential of poplar leaf-based biochar for the adsorption of antibiotics.

Abstract
Preparation of high-performance activated carbon from agroforestry waste biomass can effectively improve the shortcomings of traditional biomass carbon performance. Using the waste biomass peony seeds shell (PSS) as the precursors in this study, high performance activated carbon was prepared by the KOH two-step activation method and used to remove congo red (CR) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in water pollution. The obtained PSS-based activated carbons (PSACs) were characterized by SEM, EDS, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, FTIR, and XRD methods. The results showed that the activated carbon at 700 °C (PSAC-700) had an ultra-high specific surface area (2980.96 m2/g), excellent micropore volume (1.12 cm3/g), and abundant surface functional groups. The results of adsorption performance revealed that PSAC-700 exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for CR (qmax = 2003.2 mg/g) and CIP (qmax = 782.3 mg/g), which was superior to the carbon-based adsorbents reported reviously in the literature. Langmuir model could well describe the adsorption process of PSACs for CR and CIP, indicating that the pollutant molecules were uniformly adsorbed on the surface monolayer. The regeneration experiment suggested that after three cycles, the adsorption capacities of PSAC-700 for CR and CIP reached 1814 mg/g and 697 mg/g, respectively, with good repeatability. The preparation of PSAC-700 in this study has high adsorption capacity and strong application, which is an ideal material for wastewater purification adsorbent and has broad application prospect.

Abstract
Waste lignin, such as black liquor (BL) from paper and pulping industries, is an agro-industrial biowaste while its reuse raised global concerns. In this work, a hydrothermal carbonization procedure was employed to convert BL into magnetic lignin-based hydrochar (MLHC) for thallium elimination from wastewater. The results exhibited water purification potential due to a wider working pH window (2-9) with the magnetization intensity of 11.12 emu/g. The maximum adsorption capacity for Tl(III) was 278.9 mg/g, while the contribution of various mechanisms was elucidated with the order: surface precipitation (31.3 %), complexation (20.6 %), physical adsorption (18.2 %), chemical reduction (15.0 %), and ion exchange (14.9 %). This study revealed that hydrothermal treatment could be a potential and promising method to convert waste lignin into magnetic bio-adsorbent to recycle pulping black liquor and apply it for thallium pollution control.

Abstract
Traditional sludge disposal is currently restricted by the risk of secondary pollution. Sludge carbon material has gained widespread attention because of its low cost and environmentally sustainable properties. However, owing to the high ash content and low-energy density of sludge, sludge pyrolysis alone has certain limitations, and the performance of carbon materials needs to be improved. Herein, a sludge-cyanobacteria composite carbon (SCC) was easily synthesized, and the adsorption process of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) by SCC was examined. SCC-700-2-50% exhibited a high SBET (1047.54 m2/g) and developed pore structure rich in functional groups (such as -NH, -OH, and C-O). The combination of pore structure and functional groups improved the adsorption performance of SCC. The adsorption processes exhibited a synergistic effect in a binary system: the qm of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) were 386 mg/g and 341 mg/g, respectively, and the selectivity of Cu(II) adsorption by SCC was greater than Cr(VI). The adsorption process, examined by SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS analysis, indicated that Cu(II) as a cationic interface strengthens Cr(VI) adsorption through electrostatic interaction, and the anion Cr(VI) created a valid electrostatic shield against the electrostatic repulsion between H+ and Cu(II), facilitating Cu(II) adsorption. SCC had great reusability: Cu(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption capacity were 90% and 84%, of the initial adsorption capacity, respectively, after six cycles. This study demonstrates the prospect of SCC as a valid adsorbent for multiple heavy metal contaminations removal.

Abstract
In this work, a magnetic H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) rod-like nanocomposite as a stable and effective ternary adsorbent was fabricated by the hydrothermal method and utilized for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP), tetracycline (TC) and organic dyes from aqueous solution. Characterization of the magnetic nanocomposite was accomplished by FT-IR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, EDX, TEM, VSM, BET specific surface area and zeta potential analyses. The influencing factors on the adsorption potency of the H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) rod-like nanocomposite including initial dye concentration, temperature and adsorbent dose were studied. The maximum adsorption capacities of H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) for TC and CIP were 370.37 mg g-1 and 333.33 mg g-1 at 25 °C, respectively. In addition, the H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) adsorbent had high regeneration and reusability capacity after four cycles. In addition, the adsorbent was recovered through magnetic decantation and reused for three consecutive cycles without a considerable reduction in its performance. The adsorption mechanism was mainly ascribed to electrostatic and π-π interactions. According to these results, H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) can act as a reusable effective adsorbent for the fast elimination of tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Conventional nanomaterials are available in electrochemical glucose nonenzymatic sensing, but their broad applications are limited due to their high cost and complicated preparation procedures. In this study, NiS-NiS2/sludge-based biochar/GCE was fabricated by one-step potentiostatic electrodeposition on biochar and used as an interface material for non-enzymatic sensing of glucose in 0.1 M NaOH. With an electrodeposition time of 300 s, the as-prepared sensors delivered the best electrochemical performance toward glucose due to the synergistic effects of NiS-NiS2 and sludge-based biochar. The as prepared NiS-NiS2/sludge-based biochar surface morphology, surface composition, and electrochemical properties were characterized by SEM elemental mapping, XPS and cyclic voltammetry. Under optimized conditions, the linearity between the current response and the glucose concentration has been obtained in the range of 5-1500 μM with a detection limit of 1.5 μM. More importantly, the fabricated sensor was successfully utilized to measure glucose in serum of sweetened beverages and human blood. Accordingly, NiS-NiS2/sludge-based biochar/GCE can hopefully be applied as a normal enzyme-free glucose sensor with excellent properties of sensitivity, reproducibility, stability, as well as sustainability.

Abstract
Fixed-bed studies for phenol uptake from water were carried out using a novel Pb-Fe spinel-activated carbon adsorbent. A characterization phase including TGA, FTIR, SEM, and BET analyses was performed for the developed active carbon. In column studies, the influence of initial phenol concentration, column bed height, and the solution flow rate was investigated at natural pH. Adsorption of phenol onto Pb-Fe spinel-activated carbon composite and pristine activated carbon was analyzed in the form of breakthrough curves. Under optimum conditions, the maximum adsorption capacities for the magnetic active carbon composite and pristine activated carbon were found to be 113.95 and 102.61 mg/g, respectively. Results indicated that the adsorption capacity of adsorbent for all examined conditions was higher than that obtained for unmodified activated carbon because the composite contains additional metal hydroxides compared with the pristine activated carbon. The Yoon and Nelson, Thomas, and instantaneous local equilibrium (ILE) models were used to explain column data collected under different operating conditions. Finally, the results of the continuous adsorption process were explained successfully using the Yoon-Nelson and Thomas models. Thus, the phenol adsorption on Pb-Fe@MAC was a feasible operation to be performed in fixed-bed mode.

Abstract
The use of biochar materials as catalysts to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of antibiotics has attracted much attention. In this study, a carbonaceous material (Cu/Zn-SBC) was prepared from sewage sludge by hydrothermal modification. The efficiency of PS activation by Cu/Zn-SBC was investigated using tetracycline (TC) as the model antibiotic. In the Cu/Zn-SBC + PS system, the TC removal rate reached 90.13% at 10 min and exceeded 99% within 4 h. This not only met the requirement of removing large amounts of pollutants in a short time but also achieved the complete removal of pollutants in the subsequent time. Additionally, the Cu/Zn-SBC + PS system was found to be dominated by radical and nonradical pathways. Cu, hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface of Cu/Zn-SBC promoted the production of free radicals and non-free radicals. Under several changes in reaction conditions and water environment factors, the TC removal rate remained above 85% within 10 min. Furthermore, the removal rate of TC was still 85.79% when Cu/Zn-SBC combined with PS was reused twice and 77.14% when reused four times. This study provides an ideal solution for the treatment of sewage sludge, and offers a stable and efficient material for removing antibiotics from wastewater.

Abstract
The clusters formed by modified materials on its surface makes the application of functionalized biochars in adsorption face a great challenge. Here, a facile ball milling technology was innovatively proposed to tailor Fe-Al oxides-laden bagasse biochar to fabricate a novel adsorbent (BMFA-BC). Benefited from the increased exposure of Fe-Al oxides and, more importantly, enhanced functional groups by ball milling, the adsorption capacity of BMFA-BC for aqueous tetracycline reached up to 116.6 mg g-1 at 298 K. And the adsorption performance was temperature-dependent. Characterization analysis, batch sorption (thermodynamics, kinetics, isotherms, chemical factors) as well as data modeling illustrated that this superior adsorption ability could be attributed to π-π conjugation, H-bonding, complexation as well as pore filling. BMFA-BC displayed good adsorption capacity in multiple aqueous environments. The excellent regeneration ability, magnetic susceptibility ensured its viability for sustainable pollutants removal. These superiorities revealed that BMFA-BC was a suitable sorbent for antibiotics elimination.

Mesoporous carbon material prepared from sewage sludge hydrochar using Pluronic F127 as template for efficient removal of phenolic compounds: Experimental study and mechanism interpretation via advanced statistical physics model. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2023; 326:116841. Abstract
Mesoporous carbon material (MCM) with rich ether surface group was prepared from sewage sludge hydrochar using Pluronic F127 as template under pyrolysis activation, which provided an energy-efficient method to promote the resource utilization of sewage sludge as adsorbents for phenols removal from water. The MCM possessed high surface area (549 m2/g), abundant mesopores (average width 3.81 nm) and well-developed graphite structure. Acidic conditions and low temperatures favored the adsorption of phenolic compounds. The quick adsorption process of reaching over 85% of the capacity in the first 10 min and intraparticle diffusion as primary rate-limiting step were observed for all phenolic compounds. Advanced statistical physics analysis was used successfully to interpret the adsorption mechanism of phenols onto MCM and revealed a multi-molecular monolayer adsorption process primarily through negative charge-assisted hydrogen bond interaction where the ether functional group contributed to the predominant active sites. The adsorption capacity of phenolic compounds depended upon the number of molecules adsorbed per ether active site and the available density of ether bond group on the surface of MCM. 2,4,6-trichlorophenol showed a highest adsorption priority to occupy the limited ether active sites and its adsorption capacity reached 0.49 mmol/g, while p-nitrophenol exhibited a maximum number of molecules adsorbed on the single ether active site, showing an adsorption capacity of 0.42 mmol/g. The synergistic effect of multi-interactions mechanisms resulted in phenolic compounds removal with adsorption energies lower than 30 kJ/mol. This prepared MCM adsorbent is promising for application in treatment of water polluted by phenols.

Abstract
Sorption mechanisms of ionizable organic pollutants by biochars and approaches for the prediction of sorption are still unclear. In this study, batch experiments were conducted to explore the sorption mechanisms of woodchip-derived biochars prepared at 200–700 °C (referred as WC200–WC700) for cationic, zwitterionic and anionic species of ciprofloxacin (referred as CIP+, CIP± and CIP−, respectively). The results revealed that the sorption affinity of WC200 for different CIP species was in the order of CIP± > CIP+ > CIP−, while that of WC300–WC700 remained the order of CIP+ > CIP± > CIP−. WC200 exhibited a strong sorption ability, which could be attributed to hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction with CIP+, electrostatic attraction with CIP±, and charge-assisted hydrogen bonding with CIP−. Pore filling and π–π interactions contributed to the sorption of WC300–WC700 for CIP+, CIP± and CIP−. Rising temperature facilitated CIP sorption to WC400 as verified by site energy distribution analysis. Proposed models including the proportion of the three CIP species and sorbent aromaticity index (H/C) can quantitatively predict CIP sorption to biochars with varying carbonization degrees. These findings are vital to elucidating the sorption behaviors of ionizable antibiotics to biochars and exploring potential sorbents for environmental remediation. This study revealed the evolution of sorption mechanisms with pyrolysis temperature of biochar and CIP speciation, and provided a novel approach for the sorption prediction of ionizable antibiotics.![]()

Abstract
Porous carbons are excellent sorbents for removing organic pollutants. Green conversion of biowaste into advanced porous carbons is crucial for industrialized production and practical applications, which, however, have rarely been investigated. This study develops a coassisted carbonization method for the preparation of porous carbons with the environmentally friendly agents HCOOK and (HCOO)2Ca for the first time. The bamboo waste-derived hydrochar was transformed into oxygen-doped porous carbons, which displayed a large surface area and pore volume, abundant oxygen content, graphene structure and many surface functional groups. These properties contributed to the extremely high sorption of large quantities of diethyl phthalate, which reached 761 mg g-1. Surface adsorption, including pore filling, hydrogen bonding, and π-π stacking, rather than partitioning, was the main sorption process. Therefore, this study provides a sustainable and promising route for the preparation of porous carbons that can be applied in the efficient removal of organic pollutants.

Abstract
Since the toxicity of Sb(III) is 10 times as high as that of Sb(V) in the environment, it is urgent to find a way to cut down Sb(III). β-FeOOH-modified biochar (β-FeOOH/BC) was prepared and used to remove Sb(III). The characterization results suggested that oxygen-containing functional groups formed on β-FeOOH/BC, which increased the Sb(III) removal efficiency. Even under complex water matrix conditions, the outstanding adsorption performance of β-FeOOH/BC for Sb(III) was obtained. The adsorption reaction rapidly reached a high removal efficiency within 5 min and approached adsorption equilibrium in about 6 h. The adsorption process was fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetics. Amount of maximum adsorption was 202.53 mg g-1 at 308 K according to Langmuir model. β-FeOOH/BC removed Sb(III) mainly through pore-filling complexation, cation-π and coordination exchange. The CO sites and persistent free radicals (PFRs) acted as electron acceptors, facilitating the electron transfer. In brief, β-FeOOH/BC adsorbent material could adsorb and oxidize Sb(III), which showed excellent prospects for reducing the risk of Sb(III).

Abstract
In this study, biochar was prepared using penicillin fermentation residue (PR) as the raw material by different methods. The adsorption behavior and adsorption mechanism of biochar on tetracycline (TC) in an aqueous environment were investigated. The results showed that K2CO3 as an activator could effectively make porous structures, and that biochar with mesoporous or microporous could be prepared in a controlled manner with two kinds of different activation methods, the dry mixing method and the impregnation method. The dry mixing method could create more mesopores, while the impregnation method could prepare more micropores. Microporous biochar (IKBCH) with a high specific surface area could be prepared by the impregnation method combined with HCl soaking, which has an excellent adsorption effect on tetracycline. When the concentration of tetracycline was 200 mg/L, the removal rate of 99.91% could be achieved with the dosage of microporous biochar at 1 g/L. The adsorption process was in accordance with the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of IKBCH was 268.55 mg/g (25°C). The adsorption mechanisms were pore filling, π-π interaction, electrostatic adsorption, and hydrogen bond. Its stable and wide applicability adsorption process does not cause ecological pollution in the aqueous environment, and it is a promising biochar adsorbent.

Carbothermal Synthesis of Sludge Biochar Supported Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron for the Removal of Cd 2+ and Cu 2+: Preparation, Performance, and Safety Risks. Abstract
The practical application of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) is restricted by its easy oxidation and aggregation. Here, sludge biochar (SB) was used as a carrier to stabilize NZVI for Cd2+ and Cu2+ removal. SB supported NZVI (SB-NZVI) was synthesized using the carbothermic method. The superior preparation conditions, structural characteristics, and performance and mechanisms of the SB-NZVI composites for the removal of Cd2+ and Cu2+ were investigated via batch experiments and characterization analysis. The optimal removal capacities of 55.94 mg/g for Cd2+ and 97.68 mg/g for Cu2+ were achieved at a Fe/sludge mass ratio of 1:4 and pyrolysis temperature of 900 °C. Batch experiments showed that the SB-NZVI (1:4-900) composite had an excellent elimination capacity over a broad pH range, and that weakly acidic to neutral solutions were optimal for removal. The XPS results indicated that the Cd2+ removal was mainly dependent on the adsorption and precipitation/coprecipitation, while reduction and adsorption were the mechanisms that play a decisive role in Cu2+ removal. The presence of Cd2+ had an opposite effect on the Cu2+ removal. Moreover, the SB-NZVI composites made of municipal sludge greatly reduces the leaching toxicity and bio-availability of heavy metals in the municipal sludge, which can be identified as an environmentally-friendly material.

Abstract
A novel porous nanocomposite composed of hydroxyapatite nanorods (HAP), a MIL-101(Fe) metal-organic framework, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles was successfully fabricated in this work. The magnetic HAP/MIL-101(Fe)/Fe3O4 ternary nanocomposite was identified by various techniques, namely FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, EDX, TEM, BET specific surface area, zeta potential, and VSM measurements. Tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) aqueous solutions were used to evaluate the adsorption performance of the resulting HAP/MIL-101(Fe)/Fe3O4 composite. The adsorption rate and capacity of HAP/MIL-101(Fe)/Fe3O4 were increased as compared with HAP, MIL-101(Fe), and HAP/MIL-101(Fe) samples due to the increased attraction. The influence of initial drug concentration, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and pH on the adsorption process was investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of HAP/MIL-101(Fe)/Fe3O4 for TC and CIP were 95% and 93%, under the determined optimum conditions: pH of 7, drug concentration of 50 mg L-1, adsorbent dosage of 30 mg, and temperature of 25 °C. The maximum adsorption capacities of HAP/MIL-101(Fe)/Fe3O4 for TC and CIP were 120.48 mg g-1 and 112.35 mg g-1, respectively. Reusability of the prepared nanocomposite was easily achieved up to three times without significant change in its structure. As a result, the synthesized magnetic nanocomposite can be reused as a suitable absorbent for TC and CIP removal from aqueous solutions.
