Abstract
In this study, a new composite from silica coated MnFe2O4 nanoparticles, diethylenetriamine, 3-chloropropyl trimethoxysilane and Mg-Al Layered Double Hydroxide (Mg-Al LDH/DETA/CPTMS/SCNPs) composite was synthesized. The Mg-Al LDH/DETA/CPTMS/SCNPs composite was examined by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM). The synthesized composite exhibited magnetic property with a saturation magnetization of 0.40 emu g-1. The Mg-Al LDH/DETA/CPTMS/SCNPs composite was utilized as a successful adsorbent for removal of tetracycline from aqueous solutions. The effect of various operation factors such as initial drug concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH and contact time were investigated. The optimized variable conditions such as adsorbent dose of 60 mg L-1, drug concentration of 100 mg L-1, pH = 7 and contact time 30 min were obtained. For describing the adsorption isotherms, the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption models were utilized. The results indicated that the adsorption isotherm is in good agreement with Langmuir model. According to the Langmuir analysis, the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of the Mg-Al LDH/DETA/CPTMS/SCNPs composite for tetracycline was obtained to be 40.16 mg g-1. The kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption in all cases to be a pseudo second-order process. The negative value of ΔG° and the positive value of ΔH° showed the adsorption process to be spontaneous and endothermic.

Abstract
In this investigation, synthesis of a surface-functionalized chitosan known as amino-rich chitosan (ARCH) was achieved by successful modification of chitosan by polyethyleneimine (PEI). The synthesized ARCH was characterized by a specific surface area of 8.35 m2 g-1 and a microporous structure, with pore sizes predominantly under 25 nm. The Zeta potential of ARCH maintained a strong positive charge across a wide pH range of 3-11. These characteristics contribute to its high adsorption efficiency in aqueous solutions, demonstrated by its application in removing various anionic dyes, including erioglaucine disodium salt (EDS), methyl orange (MO), amaranth (ART), tartrazine (TTZ), and hexavalent chromium ions (Cr(VI)). The adsorption capacities (Qe) for these contaminants were measured at 1301.15 mg g-1 for EDS, 1025.45 mg g-1 for MO, 940.72 mg g-1 for ART, 732.96 mg g-1 for TTZ, and 350.15 mg g-1 for Cr(VI). A significant observation was the rapid attainment of adsorption equilibrium, occurring within 10 min for ARCH. The adsorption behavior was well-described by the Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Additionally, an increase in temperature was found to enhance the adsorption capacity of ARCH. The material demonstrated robust stability and selective adsorption capabilities in varied conditions, including different organic compounds, pH environments, sodium salt presence, and in the face of interfering ions. After five cycles of adsorption, ARCH maintained about 60% of its initial adsorption capacity. Due to its efficient adsorption performance, simple synthesis process, low biological toxicity, and cost-effectiveness, ARCH is a promising candidate for future water treatment technologies.

Abstract
In this contribution, a bio-nanocomposite hydrogel film (CS/XG.SiO2) of chitosan/silica NPs-modified xanthan gum was prepared via a facile solution casting blending approach and utilized to capture the anionic methyl orange (MO) from aqueous solution. A Taguchi standard method was used to optimize the hydrogel nanocomposite synthesis reaction conditions after comprehensive characterization using various techniques. Under various operating parameters, the hydrogel biofilm was tested for its effectiveness in adsorbing MO dye in a batch process. In agreement with Langmuir isotherm, the CS/XG.SiO2 biofilm was capable of adsorbing MO at a maximum capacity of 294 mg/g at pH 5.30, contact time 45 min, temperature 25 °C, and concentration (C0) 50 mg/L. Pseudo-second-order model and adsorption kinetics data well matched. The thermodynamic data indicate that adsorption occurred spontaneously and exothermically. The main mechanisms driving the adsorption are electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding between the CS/XG.SiO2 nanocomposite and the dye. Furthermore, the biofilm is regenerative, allowing for up to five reuses while maintaining a 75 % dye removal efficiency. This study highlights that the CS/XG.SiO2 hydrogel nanocomposite is an inexpensive, reusable, and eco-friendly bio-adsorbent that is capable of anionic dye adsorption.

Abstract
Herein, we designed and constructed a highly selective MIPs for bisphenol A (BPA) named Cu-MIPs@CS based on Cu(II) coordination. The synthesis of Cu-MIPs@CS employed a dummy template strategy and surface imprinting technology, with chitosan (CS) as the substrate linked to imprinted layers via Cu2+ bridging. 4-vinylpyridine acted as the functional monomer, capable of forming a complex with the template ketoprofen, while ethylene glycol dimethacrylate served as the cross linker. Cu-MIPs@CS exhibited a significantly enhanced imprinting factor of 14.78 for BPA, which was approximately 6.6 times higher than that of imprinted materials without Cu2+ (MIPs@CS). Cu-MIPs@CS exhibited a selective factor of 12.74 towards resorcinol, which possessed identical functional groups but a smaller size than BPA, representing an enhancement of selectivity by 12.25-fold compared to MIPs@CS. More importantly, Cu-MIPs@CS exhibited a superior discrimination ability between BPA and its structural analogue, diphenolic acid, with an excellent selective factor of 2.93, highlighting its significance in distinguish the structural analogue of BPA. In contrast, MIPs@CS lack sufficient selectivity to differentiate between them. Through exploration of adsorption mechanism of Cu-MIPs@CS, it was demonstrated that the incorporation of Cu2+ significantly reduced nonspecific adsorption, but also facilitated the creation of more selective imprinted cavities by introducing metal coordination, thereby notably enhancing the selectivity of Cu-MIPs@CS. Finally, the developed Cu-MIPs@CS were applied as the solid phase extraction adsorbent and combined with HPLC-DAD detection to establish an analytical method towards BPA in drinking water samples. The limit of detection of the method was 0.14 μg L-1 and recoveries ranged from 95.6 % to 101 %. This work provided broad prospects for construction of highly selective MIPs and accurate quantification of trace amounts of BPA.

Abstract
Adsorptive separation membranes are widely utilized for the removal of toxic dyeing pollutants from dyeing wastewater. However, developing novel adsorption membranes with large adsorption capacities and enhanced adsorption performance for dyes in actual wastewater poses a significant challenge. This study focuses on the fabrication of crown ether-containing copolymer porous membrane (CRPM) and investigation of the adsorption performance of dyes from aqueous solutions. The morphology structure and pore size distribution revealed that the membrane was endowed with rich micropores and hierarchical porous structures. Three typical cationic dyes (MB, RhB, CV) and an anionic dye (MO) were selected to evaluate the adsorption behavior. The results of adsorption isotherms and kinetics demonstrated that the adsorption data could be well-fitted using the Freundlich and pseudo-first-order kinetic models, the thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption process of dyes on CRPM is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The membrane exhibited excellent adsorption performance for cationic dyes, with RhB displaying a higher maximum adsorption capacity than previously reported porous membranes. Notably, dynamic adsorption-desorption filtration demonstrated a rapid removal efficiency, with RhB, MB, and CV achieving removal rates of 99.09%, 98.63%, and 99.14% respectively, after five cycles. The filtration volume of the CRPM membrane was 2.4-fold greater than that of a traditional PVDF membrane when applied to actual dyeing wastewater. DFT theoretical calculations were employed to elucidate the adsorption mechanism. These calculations confirmed the significant roles of electrostatic interactions, H-bonds and π-π interactions in facilitating the high-efficiency adsorption of cationic dyes. These findings highlight the potential of the crown ether-containing copolymer as a promising material for adsorption separation membranes in the treatment of dyeing wastewater.

Abstract
Factory and natural wastewaters contain a wide range of organic pollutants. Therefore, multifunctional adsorbents must be developed that can purify wastewater. Phytic acid-cross-linked Baker's yeast cyclodextrin polymer composites (IBY-PA-CDP) were prepared using a one-pot method. IBY-PA-CDP was used to adsorb methylene blue (MB), bisphenol A (BPA), and methyl orange (MO). Studies on the ionic strength and strongly acidic ion salts confirmed that IBY-PA-CDP adsorbs MO through hydrophobic interactions. This also shows that Na+ was the direct cause of the increased MO removal. Adsorption studies on binary systems showed that MB/MO inhibited the adsorption of BPA by IBY-PA-CDP. The presence of MB increased the removal rate of MO by IBY-PA-CDP due to the bridging effect. The Langmuir isotherm model calculated the maximum adsorption capacities for MB and BPA to be 630.96 and 83.31 mg g-1, respectively. However, the Freundlich model is more suitable for fitting the experimental data for MO adsorption. To understand the rate-limiting stage of adsorption, a mass-transfer mechanism model was employed. The fitting results show that adsorption onto the active sites is the rate-determining step. After five regeneration cycles, IBY-PA-CDP could be reused with good stability and recyclability.

Abstract
A novel adsorbent β-cyclodextrin-modified pectin was synthesized for removing cholesterol and bile salts from the gastric-intestinal passage. Different amounts of β-cyclodextrin were cross-linked to pectin by aldol condensation reaction via glutaraldehyde. The prepared β-cyclodextrin-modified pectins were successfully confirmed by characterization, showing a higher specific surface area and improved thermal stability with satisfactory cellular compatibility. The introduction of β-cyclodextrins dramatically improved the cholesterol adsorption capacity of pectin due to their hydrophobic cavities. Meanwhile, the modified pectins exhibited superior adsorption for sodium cholate than β-cyclodextrin or pectin itself, which was attributed to hydrophobic interactions. P10:1 displayed the strongest adsorption performance, with a maximum adsorption ability of 44.21 mg/g for cholesterol and 21.38 mg/g for sodium cholate. Furthermore, their adsorption favored the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudosecond-order kinetic model. These results indicate that modified pectin has potential as a nature-based adsorbent for removal of cholesterol and bile salts in the health food industry.

Abstract
Preparation of flexible supercapacitors with excellent mechanical properties and self-healing properties is of great significance but still remains a challenge. A self-healable conductive hydrogel based on poly N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide (PHEAA) is fabricated as electrolyte for supercapacitors. The design of the physically cross-linked dual network, and rich hydrogen bonds endow the hydrogel with robust mechanical properties and strong self-healing ability. The hydrogel exhibited an excellent stretchability (723 %) and a high ionic conductivity (21.8 mS/cm). Specially, by in situ growth of electrode film, a non-laminated supercapacitor is obtained with flexibility and self-healing ability. Due to the non-laminated structure, the supercapacitor can work stably under bending and punching. The supercapacitor possessed an areal capacitance of 253.1 mF/cm2 and the capacitance retention was 80 % after five cutting-healing cycles. The pseudo-capacitance contribution of the supercapacitor after self-healing was discussed. It is noteworthy that the supercapacitor maintains the ability to power a clock after self-healing.

Abstract
Green synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted a lot of attention as a crucial step for practical industrial applications. In this work, green synthesis of zinc(II) metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) has been carried out at room temperature. The Zn metal (node) was extracted from spent domestic batteries, and the linker was benzene di-carboxylic acid (BDC). The characterization of the as-prepared Zn-MOF was accomplished by PXRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, TGA, and nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. All the characterization techniques strongly supported that as-synthesized Zn-MOF using metallic solid waste Zn is similar to that was reported in the literature. The as-prepared Zn-MOF was stable in water for 24 h without any changes in its functional groups and framework. The prepared Zn-MOF was tested for the adsorption of three dyes, two anionic dyes, aniline blue (AB), and orange II (O(II)) as well as methylene blue (MB), an example of cationic dye from aqueous solution. AB has the highest equilibrium adsorbed amount, qe, of value 55.34 mg g-1 at pH = 7 and 25 °C within 40 min. Investigation of the adsorption kinetics indicated that these adsorption processes could be described as a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the adsorption process of the three dyes was described well by the Freundlich isotherm model. According to the thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption of AB on the prepared Zn-MOF was an endothermic and spontaneous process. In contrast, it was non-spontaneous and exothermic for the uptake of O(II) and MB. This study complements the business case development model of "solid waste to value-added MOFs."

Abstract
Nitrates level in water is a worldwide problem that represents a risk to the environment and people's health; efforts are currently devoted to the development and implementation of new biomaterials for their removal. In this study, chitosan (Ch) from shrimp waste and the related epichlorohydrin-modified crossover chitosan (Ch-EPI) were used to remove nitrates from aqueous solutions. The mechanism of selective nitrate removal was elucidated and validated by theoretical calculations. The physicochemical performance of Ch and Ch-EPI was investigated through the main parameters pH, adsorption capacity, contact time, initial nitrate concentration, coexisting anions, and temperature. The experimental data were fitted to widely used adsorption kinetic models and adsorption isotherms. The maximum percentage of nitrate adsorption was reached at an equilibrium pH of 4.0 at an adsorbent dose of 2.0 g/L after a contact time of 50 min. Competing anion experiments show that chloride and sulfate ions have minimal and maximal effects on nitrate adsorption by Ch-EPI. Experimental adsorption data are best fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetic and isothermal Langmuir models. The maximum adsorption capacities of Ch and Ch-EPI for nitrate removal were 12.0 mg/g and 38 mg/g, respectively.

Abstract
In this study, quartz sand (QS) incorporated into a crosslinked chitosan-glutaraldehyde matrix (QS@Ch-Glu) was prepared and employed as an efficient adsorbent for the elimination of Orange G (OG) dye from water. The sorption process is adequately described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacities of 172.65, 188.18, and 206.65mg/g at 25, 35, and 45 °C, respectively. A statistical physics model was adopted to elucidate the adsorption mechanism of OG on QS@Ch-Glu. Calculated thermodynamic factors revealed that the adsorption of OG is endothermic, spontaneous, and occurs via physical interactions. Overall, the proposed adsorption mechanism was based on electrostatic attractions, n-π stacking interaction, hydrogen bonding interaction, and Yoshida hydrogen bonding. The adsorption rate of QS@Ch-Glu was still above 95 % even after 6 cycles of adsorption and desorption. Furthermore, QS@Ch-Glu demonstrated high efficiency in real water samples. All these findings demonstrate that QS@Ch-Glu is qualified for practical applications.

Abstract
Carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin-nanochitosan-glutaraldehyde (CM-βCD:nChi:Glu) terpolymer was prepared as a nano-adsorbent for the removal of the anionic textile dye, acid red 37. The terpolymer nanocomposite formation and characterization were clarified by FTIR, XRD, scanning electron microscopy, TEM, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area (BET-SSA), and zeta potential. The removal of the textile dye was investigated by using the batch adsorption method, investigating the effect of pH, dye concentration, adsorbent dose, contact time, and temperature. The results revealed that the maximum removal efficiency of 102.2 mg/L of the dye is about 99.67% under pH 6.0, the optimal contact time is 5 min, and the adsorbent dosage is 0.5 g/L. At 29°C; the adsorption capacity increased from 81.29 to 332.60 mg/g when the initial concentration of the dye was increased from 40.97 to 212.20 mg/L. Adsorption kinetics fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model with a good correlation (R 2 = 0.9998). The Langmuir isotherm model can best describe the adsorption isotherm model. Based on the experimental results, the CM-βCD:nChi:Glu terpolymer has a promising potential as an efficient novel adsorbent for the removal of textile dye acid red 37 from contaminated water. This study's preparation techniques and demonstrated mechanisms offer valuable insights into the adsorbent-adsorbate interactions mechanism, analysis, challenges, and future directions of beta-cyclodextrin/chitosan-based adsorbents in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Water recovery is a significant proposition for human survival and sustainable development, and we never stop searching for more efficient, easy-operating, low-cost and environmentally friendly methods to decontaminate water bodies. Herein, we combined the advantages of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), magnetite nanoparticles (MNs), and two kinds of quaternary ammonium salts to synthesize two porous quaternary ammonium groups capped magnetic β-CD polymers (QMCDP1 and QMCDP2) to remove organic pollutants and eradicate pathogenic microorganisms effectively through a single implementation. In this setting, β-CD polymer (CDP) was utilized as the porous substrate material, while MNs endowed the materials with excellent magnetism enhancing recyclability in practical application scenarios, and the grafting of quaternary ammonium groups was beneficial for the adsorption of anionic dyes and sterilization. Both QMCDPs outperformed uncapped MCDPs in their adsorption ability of anionic pollutants, using methyl blue (MB) and orange G (OG) as model dyes. Additionally, QMCDP2, which was modified with longer alkyl chains than QMCDP1, exhibits superior bactericidal efficacy with a 99.47% removal rate for Staphylococcus aureus. Accordingly, this study provides some insights into designing a well-performed and easily recyclable adsorbent for simultaneous sterilization and adsorption of organic contaminants in wastewater.

Abstract
Wastewater from diverse industrial sectors, agricultural practices and other household activities causes water pollution that result in different environmental issues. The main goals of wastewater treatment are typically to enhance the purity of wastewater and to enable the disposal of domestic and industrial effluents without endangering human health or causing excessive environmental issues. There were several natural and synthetic materials which have been utilized for wastewater treatment, amongst them polymers gain more importance due to their non-toxicity, economic feasibility, abundant availability of sources, renewability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, etc. The organic polymers such as cellulose, chitin, gelatin, alginates, lignin, dextran and other starch derivatives are the most commonly used natural polymers in wastewater treatments. The unique physical and chemical characteristics of the natural polymers make them become an alternative in wastewater treatments such as membrane filtration, adsorption, coagulation, flocculation and ion-exchange process to remove harmful contaminants such as toxic metals, dyes, medicines, pesticides, and so on. The review article discusses natural polymers and related uses in wastewater treatment. This review mainly focused on the wastewater treatment using natural polymers and the techniques involved for their extraction from natural sources. The recent trends in polymer extraction from the natural sources and the scope for the future research of natural polymers in various sectors are also discussed in detail.

Abstract
A novel bi-functional β-cyclodextrin polymer (CD@TCT@PEI) was synthesized for the removal of hydroquinone and Pb(II) from wastewater. The structure and adsorption performance of CD@TCT@PEI towards hydroquinone and Pb(II) were studied comprehensively. Both of the adsorption processes fit the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. The adsorption isotherms of hydroquinone and Pb(II) could be described well by Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacities of hydroquinone and Pb(II) are 364.86 and 113.52 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption of hydroquinone and Pb(II) on CD@TCT@PEI is an exothermic and spontaneous process. The adsorbed CD@TCT@PEI could be regenerated easily, and can still maintain high adsorption performance after 5 cycles. The electrostatic interaction and coordination interaction account for the adsorption of Pb(II), and inclusion of cyclodextrin and hydrogen-bond interaction are responsible for hydroquinone adsorption. This study provides some insights to design an adsorbent that can simultaneously remove heavy metal ions and organic micropollutants from wastewater.

Abstract
As an important biomass resource, agricultural waste is of great significance to improve the application value. In this study, the yellow passion fruit peel (Y-PFP) was used as a biosorbent to remove cationic dyes (methylene blue (MB) and methyl violet (MV)) by the simple treatment process. And the effects of pH, contact time, initial dye concentration, ionic strength, and temperature on the adsorption performance of Y-PFP were studied. The adsorption process was consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. What's more, the maximum adsorption capacity for MB and MV was 324.7 and 485.4 mg·g-1, respectively. And Y-PFP still exhibited high removal efficiency after five desorption-adsorption cycles. Thus, Y-PFP had highly valuable for the removal of cationic dyes from wastewater with a simple preparation process, low cost, excellent adsorption capacity and selectivity.

Abstract
A hybrid composite based on metal-organic framework (MOF) was chemically fabricated by embedding the magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles within amino-functionalized porous La-MOF (MOF/NH2) to produce a highly efficient and reusable composite of MOF/NH2/Fe3O4. Different proper techniques were used for the characterization of surface morphology and chemical arrangement of the prepared MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite. The characterization results using various techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller analysis (BET), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) approved the successful fabrication of MOF with amino arms on its surface besides the well magnetization using magnetic nanoparticles. The MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite showed enhanced adsorption capacity (618 mg/g) toward methyl orange (MO) anionic dye which is higher than many commercial reported adsorbents due to the presence of many types of adsorption sites (NH2 groups and lanthanum sites), large surface area of MOF, and the synergetic effect of magnetic nanoparticles. Moreover, the MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite showed selective adsorption of MO dye from dye mixtures owing to the electrostatic attraction. Also, the MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite retained over 90% of its efficiency for the dye removal even after six successive cycles. So, the present study provided a practical strategy for the design of functional MOF hybrid composites. Furthermore, due to the adaptability of its architectural form, it is a potential adsorbent material for industrial wastewater treatment uses.

Abstract
Water is an essential substance for the survival on Earth of all living organisms. However, population growth has disturbed the natural phenomenon of living, due to industrial growth to meet ever expanding demands, and, hence, an exponential increase in environmental pollution has been reported in the last few decades. Moreover, water pollution has drawn major attention for its adverse effects on human health and the ecosystem. Various techniques have been used to treat wastewater, including biofiltration, activated sludge, membrane filtration, active oxidation process and adsorption. Among the mentioned, the last method is becoming very popular. Moreover, among the sorbents, those based on cyclodextrin have gained worldwide attention due to their excellent properties. This review article overviewed recent contributions related to the synthesis of Cyclodextrin (CD)-based adsorbents to treat wastewater, and their applications, especially for the removal of heavy metals, dyes, and organic pollutants (pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptor chemicals). Furthermore, new adsorption trends and trials related to CD-based materials are also discussed regarding their regenerative potential. Finally, this review could be an inspiration for new research and could also anticipate future directions and challenges associated with CD-based adsorbents.

Abstract
A biomass amino silica-functionalized material was successfully prepared by a simple sol-gel method. 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was added to a tannin-rich grape residue to improve its physicochemical properties and enhance the adsorption performance. The APTES functionalization led to significant changes in the material's characteristics. The functionalized material was efficiently applied in the removal of methyl orange (MO) due to its unique characteristics, such as an abundance of functional groups on its surface. The adsorption process suggests that the electrostatic interactions were the main acting mechanism of the MO dye removal, although other interactions can also take place. The functionalized biomass achieved a very high MO dye maximum adsorption capacity (Q max) of 361.8 mg g-1. The temperature positively affected the MO removal, and the thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption of MO onto APTES-functionalized biomass was spontaneous and endothermic, and enthalpy is driven in the physisorption mode. The regeneration performance revealed that the APTES-functionalized biomass material could be easily recycled and reused by maintaining very good performance even after five cycles. The adsorbent material was also employed to treat two simulated dye house effluents, which showed 48% removal. At last, the APTES biomass-based material may find significant applications as a multifunctional adsorbent and can be used further to separate pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract
AbstractIn this work, we synthesized an ionic liquid (IL)—(Dimethylamino)ethyl Methacrylate maleate ([DMAEMA]MA) as the crosslinker, through one-pot to synthesized hydrogels with high adsorption capacity for dye in water. Both anionic dyes (methylene blue, rhodamine B) and cationic dyes (congo red, eosin B) could be adsorbed by this type of hydrogel with different adsorption mechanism, and its adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RHB), congo red (CR), eosin B (EB) were 489.1, 463.2, 465.5 and 462 mg/g (amount of dye adsorbed per gram of hydrogel), respectively. The surface structure of the hydrogel before and after adsorption was observed and compared by scanning electron microscope (SEM). After studying the adsorption isotherms of the hydrogel adsorbent, it was found that the hydrogel adsorbent had two adsorption mechanisms. This was not found in reported literatures previously.

Abstract
Many efforts have been devoted to screening new solid-state forms of poorly soluble drugs in the pharmaceutical industry, thus modulating the drug properties without changing the pharmacological nature. It is a wise strategy to prepare amorphous series with cyclodextrin (CD) and its derivatives as excipients to enhance the aqueous solubility, dissolution, and bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs. In this study, four binary amorphous mixtures of ulipristal acetate (UPA) with CDs (β-CD, γ-CD, dimethyl-β-CD, hydroxypropyl-β-CD) were prepared by the co-milling method and characterized in the solid-state. According to powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), UPA existed in the noncrystalline form in the four binary amorphous mixtures. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) indicated that UPA interacted with the four CDs, which was also verified by molecular docking. Compared with the crystalline and amorphous UPA, the solubility, dissolution, and stability of the drug in the four amorphous UPA systems were significantly improved, so they were considered potentially advantageous solid forms. Our research shows that CDs can be used as new effective excipients in amorphous systems for active pharmaceutical ingredients (API).

Abstract
In order to remove Cu2+ from wastewater, a kind of microsphere adsorbent (SCDO) with high efficiency for Cu2+ adsorption was prepared by the microdrop condensation method, where chitosan (CTS) and sodium alginate (SA) were used as the matrix to crosslink β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and zeolite (Zeo). The structure and properties of SCDO were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Upon that, the adsorption performance of SCDO for Cu2+ was studied, in which the effects of pH, initial concentration, dosage, adsorption time and temperature were investigated. The results showed that the removal rate of Cu2+ reached 97.08%, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 24.32 mg/g with the temperature at 30 °C, the dosage of SCDO at 12 g/L, the initial concentration of Cu2+ at 100 mg/L, the pH of the solution at 6.0 and the adsorption time at 120 min, respectively. The adsorption process of Cu2+ by SCDO occurred in accordance with quasi-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. After four repeats of continuous adsorption and desorption, the regenerative removal rate of Cu2+ could still reach 84.28%, which indicated that SCDO had outstanding reusability.

Abstract
In recent years, nanotechnology-based approaches have resulted in the development of new alternative sustainable technologies for water purification. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are an emerging class of materials for nanofiltration membranes. In this work, we report the production, characterisation and testing of a promising nanofiltration membrane made from water-exfoliated boron nitride (BN) 2D nanosheets. The membranes have been tested for water purification and removal of typical water-soluble dyes such as methyl orange, methylene blue and Evans blue, with the water-exfoliated BN membranes achieving retention values close to 100%. In addition, we compared the performance of membranes made from water-exfoliated BN with those produced from BN using sonication-assisted liquid exfoliation in selected organic solvents such as 2-propanol and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. It was found that membranes from the water-exfoliated BN showed superior performance. We believe this research opens up a unique opportunity for the development of new high-performance environmentally friendly membranes for nanofiltration and new sustainable separation technologies.

Abstract
Water pollution, which has become a global problem in parallel with environmental pollution, is a problem that needs to be solved urgently, considering the gradual depletion of water resources. The inadequacy of the water treatment methods and the materials used somehow directed the researchers to look for dual character structures such as biocompatible and biodegradable β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). β-CD, which is normally insoluble in water, is used in demanding wastewater applications by being modified with the help of different agents to be water soluble or transformed into polymeric adsorbents as a result of co-polymerization via cross-linkers. In this way, in addition to the host-guest interactions offered by β-CD, secondary forces arising from these interactions provide advantages in terms of regeneration and reusability. However, the adsorption efficiency and synthesis steps need to be improved. Based on the current studies presented in this review, in which cross-linkers and modification methods are also mentioned, suggestions for novel synthesis methods of new-generation β-CD-based materials, criticisms, and recent methods of removal of micropollutants such as heavy metals, industrial dyes, harmful biomolecules, and pharmaceutics wastes are mentioned.

Abstract
Chitosan crosslinked with metal-organic framework (MOF-199)@aminated graphene oxide aerogel (MOF-199@AFGO/CS) were prepared to adsorb formaldehyde and methyl orange. The prepared MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel was well characterized via SEM, EDX, FT-IR, XRD and XPS to reveal the microstructure and composition. Besides, the mechanical property and the stability of MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel were investigated. The results showed that MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel had good stability in water, compression resilience and thermostability. The study on the ability to adsorb formaldehyde gas and methyl orange showed that the adsorption capacity of MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel was related to the pore size and the surface functional groups of MOF-199@AFGO/CS aerogel. When the pore size is moderate, as the amino group and MOF-199 on the aerogel increased, the adsorption capacity of formaldehyde gas (197.89 mg/g) and methyl orange (412 mg/g) can reach the maximum. Furthermore, the adsorption process at equilibrium followed the Freundlich isotherm model. The kinetic behavior was well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemisorption as the rate-determining step. This work can provide a reliable basis for the adsorbent to remove pollutants in different forms at the same time, and has potential application in simultaneously adsorbing liquid pollutants and gas pollutants.

Abstract
Chromium pollution is a serious environmental problem given that like most heavy metals, Cr tends to persist and accumulate in the environment. In this study, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid-thiourea-modified magnetic chitosan (DTCS-Fe3O4) was synthesized for use as an adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions. The effects of various treatment conditions on the Cr(VI) adsorption performance of DTCS-Fe3O4 composite as well as the kinetics were elucidated. Moreover, by observing the structure and morphology of DTCS-Fe3O4, the possible Cr(VI) adsorption mechanism was proposed. DTCS-Fe3O4 exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 321.3 ± 6.0 mg g-1. Further, the adsorption process, which followed the Langmuir model for monolayer adsorption, was predominantly governed by chemical adsorption, and could be fitted using the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. Furthermore, given its ease of preparation, low cost, and remarkable performance, it is expected that the DTCS-Fe3O4 composite would find wide practical application in the removal of toxic Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Abstract
The aim of this research was to fabricate active nanocomposite films by incorporation of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs) (3, 6 and 9% w/w) into the chitosan-based films. The NiONPs were synthesized by solution combustion method and the films were prepared by solvent casting method. The formation of new interactions and increasing of films' crystallinity were confirmed by FT-IR and XRD analyses. Uniform dispersion of NiONPs at lower concentrations and their aggregation at level of 9% was confirmed by FE-SEM observations. Water barrier properties, tensile strength, thermal properties and surface hydrophobicity of films enhanced by addition of 6% NiONPs. Photocatalytic activity of nanocomposites was confirmed by absorption of 72% of methyl orange during 270 min under UV irradiation. The nanocomposite films exhibited good antibacterial activity against gram-positive (S. aureus) and gram-negative (S. typhimurium) bacteria. Therefore, the chitosan-NiONPs nanocomposite films could be used for active food packaging applications and photodecolorization purposes.

Abstract
A novel magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@Bi2O2CO3/rGO composite comprising of uniform core-shell-structured Fe3O4@SiO2@Bi2O2CO3 microspheres mounted on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets was successfully fabricated by using a facile hydrothermal method. The adsorption-desorption isotherm of Fe3O4@SiO2@Bi2O2CO3/rGO belonged to type IV with an H4-type hysteresis loop. The specific surface areas and magnetization saturation value (Ms) of Fe3O4@SiO2@Bi2O2CO3/rGO (x = 0.15 g) were 102.12 m2/g and 25.4 emu/g, respectively. Fe3O4@SiO2@Bi2O2CO3/rGO (x = 0.15 g) exhibited remarkable photocatalytic degradation activity and mineralization effect for MO and decolorization performance for the mixed solution of MO, Rh B, and MB. MO degradation by Fe3O4@SiO2@Bi2O2CO3/rGO conformed to a first-order kinetic reaction, and the corresponding kapp value was 0.05553 min-1. A suitable amount of rGO in Fe3O4@SiO2@Bi2O2CO3/rGO could decrease the energy band gap, inhibit the recombination of photo-induced electron/hole (e-/h+) pair, and broaden and enhance the response of the catalyst to visible light, thereby enhancing the visible-light catalytic degradation of organic dyes. The active species produced in the photocatalysis included •O2-, •OH, and h+, with •O2- being the dominant active species. The as-prepared photocatalyst also showed excellent magnetic separation performance and stability. Results show that the as-prepared Fe3O4@SiO2@Bi2O2CO3/rGO composite is a promising photocatalyst with considerable application potential in organic dyes removal.

Abstract
In the present research, magnetically recyclable polyphosphazene (PCTP)/Ag (MPCTP-Ag) nanoparticles are prepared by a green path, in which PCTP was used to modify Fe3O4 nanoparticles and provide nucleation sites for the reduction of Ag nanoparticles. The prepared MPCTP-Ag nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, SEM, EDS, BET, XRD, vibrating sample magnometry, XPS, and TGA analysis. The catalytic performances of the MPCTP-Ag nanoparticles for the degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and their mixtures in the presence of NaBH4 were studied. The main factors affecting the catalytic performance, including temperature, reactant concentration, and catalyst dosage, were investigated. The results showed that the MPCTP-Ag nanoparticles exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the degradation of all three targeted organic contaminants (4-NP, MB, and MO). Moreover, the product retains its catalytic activity after being reused five times by magnetic separation. The results showed that MPCTP-Ag composite nanoparticles were efficient recyclable magnetic nanocatalysts with promising application in environment protection.
