Organic farming reduces pesticide load in a bird of prey

Human activities have led to the contamination of all environmental compartments worldwide, including bird species. In birds, both the environment and maternal transfer lead to high inter-brood variability in contamination levels of pollutants, whereas intra-brood variability is generally low. However, most existing studies focused on heavy metals or persistent compounds and none, to our knowledge, addressed the variability in contamination levels of multiple pesticides and the factors influencing it. In this study, the number of pesticides detected (of 104 compounds searched) and the sum of their concentrations in the blood of 55 Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus) nestlings from 22 nests sampled in 2021 were used as metrics of contamination levels. We investigated the effect of organic farming at the size of male's home range (i.e., 14 km2) and chicks' sex and hatching order on contamination levels. We did not find a difference between inter-brood and intra-brood variability in pesticide contamination levels, suggesting a different exposure of siblings through food items. While chicks' sex or rank did not affect their contamination level, we found that the percentage of organic farming around the nests significantly decreased the number of pesticides detected, although it did not decrease the total concentrations. This finding highlights the potential role of organic farming in reducing the exposure of birds to a pesticide cocktail.

Methylmercury neurotoxicity: Beyond the neurocentric view

Mercury is a highly toxic metal widely used in human activities worldwide, therefore considered a global public health problem. Many cases of mercury intoxication have occurred in history and represent a huge challenge nowadays. Of particular importance is its methylated form, methylmercury (MeHg). This mercurial species induces damage to several organs in the human body, especially to the central nervous system. Neurological impairments such as executive, memory, motor and visual deficits are associated with MeHg neurotoxicity. Molecular mechanisms involved in MeHg-induced neurotoxicity include excitotoxicity due to glutamatergic imbalance, disturbance in calcium homeostasis and oxidative balance, failure in synaptic support, and inflammatory response. Although neurons are largely affected by MeHg intoxication, they only represent half of the brain cells. Glial cells represent roughly 50 % of the brain cells and are key elements in the functioning of the central nervous system. Particularly, astrocytes and microglia are deeply involved in MeHg-induced neurotoxicity, resulting in distinct neurological outcomes depending on the context. In this review, we discuss the main findings on astroglial and microglial involvement as mediators of neuroprotective and neurotoxic responses to MeHg intoxication. The literature shows that these responses depend on chemical and morphophysiological features, thus, we present some insights for future investigations, considering the particularities of the context, including time and dose of exposure, brain region, and species of study.

Review: Fish bile, a highly versatile biomarker for different environmental pollutants

Ecotoxicological assessments encompass a broad spectrum of biochemical endpoints and ecological factors, allowing for comprehensive assessments concerning pollutant exposure levels and their effects on both fish populations and surrounding ecosystems. While these evaluations offer invaluable insights into the overall health and dynamics of aquatic environments, they often provide an integrated perspective, making it challenging to pinpoint the precise sources and individual-level responses to environmental contaminants. In contrast, biliary pollutant excretion assessments represent a focused approach aimed at understanding how fish at the individual level respond to environmental stressors. In this sense, the analysis of pollutant profiles in fish bile not only serves as a valuable exposure indicator, but also provides critical information concerning the uptake, metabolism, and elimination of specific contaminants. Therefore, by investigating unique and dynamic fish responses to various pollutants, biliary assessments can contribute significantly to the refinement of ecotoxicological studies. This review aims to discuss the multifaceted utility of bile as a potent biomarker for various environmental pollutants in fish in targeted monitoring strategies, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, estrogenic compounds, resin acids, hepatotoxins and per- and polyfluorinated substances. The main caveats of this type of assessment are also discussed, as well as future directions of fish bile studies.

Combustion performance and emission characteristics of aloevera diesel-emulsified fuel in a DI diesel engine

Nowadays, mankind is very particular about the usage of energy in the most effective manner by keeping the view of less adulterating the atmosphere, which are the key aspects of many scientists all around the world. In this particular study, the aloevera diesel has been chosen as the primary fuel, and studies have been conducted on emission pollutant characteristics by choosing an appropriate diesel engine. Furthermore, stable emulsions have been produced by using aloevera, and the same was mixed with diesel at the ratio of 5% and 10% as the compound. Moreover, span 80 and tween 80 are used as the surfactant with an HLB balance of 9.95. Similarly, the emulsions are prepared with the help of a mechanical stirrer for exact duration of 30 min. In order to carry out the experimental investigation process, a single-cylinder diesel engine was used with a data acquisition system. The entire analyses are carried out with two sets of methods such as no load and full load. The performance and combustion characteristics such as heat release, combustion pressure, thermal efficiency (B5 - 6.303%↑, B10 - 3.789%↑), and specific fuel consumption of the brake (B5 - 4.2%↑, B10 - 5%↑) were measured. Likewise, emission parameters such as CO (B5 - 0.02%↓, B10 - 0.04%↓), HC (B5 - 1 PPM↓, B10 - 5 PPM↓), NOx (B5 - 20 PPM↓, B10 - 89 PPM↓), and CO2 (B5 - 0.3%↑, B10 - 0.4%↑) are measured by using AVL Di-gas analyzer. It was noticed that increased peak cylinder pressure and greater heat release rate were on account of a longer ignition delay period. Additionally, an increase in engine performance and the corresponding reduction in exhaust emission have also been observed upon using aloevera-emulsified diesel fuel.

Accurate Experimental Structure of 1-Chloronaphthalene

The structure of isolated 1-chloronaphthalene has been investigated in a supersonic expansion by high-resolution chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy in the 2-8 GHz frequency range. Accurate values of the rotational, centrifugal distortion, and nuclear quadrupole coupling constants for the only availabe conformer have been determined. The intensity of the spectrum allowed us to observe all the heavy atoms isotopologues in natural abundance, determining their rotational constants. From the extensive experimental dataset we derived accurate structures for 1-chloronaphthalene using different methodologies and compared with related compounds.

Stability study of flame structure using photodiodes in surface flame burners

Radiation spectroscopy can be effective in identifying pollutants and species. By examining a photodiode, the frequency peaks obtained from the analysis, and the range in which the cell flame is converted to a surface flame, we obtained the value ratio of the cell flame to the surface flame in the range of 0.7-0.74 in different powers. The frequency peak in this range decreases from the maximum value of 9.9823 Hz to its minimum value of 9.058 Hz in different powers. By analyzing the temperature compared to the frequency peak, we found that in the range of equivalence ratio 0.7-0.75, the frequency peak decreases from 9.5 to 9.9 Hz to 8.7-9 Hz. The temperature has an increasing behavior, and in the equivalence ratio, the temperature is in the range of 1400-1500 °C, i.e., at its maximum value. We observed the cell formation process and its conversion to surface flame by flame detection. The flame height in the cellular and superficial regions is in the range of 0.65-0.85, which is the minimum flame height of 3-10 mm, and NO and CO were examined in the ratio of different equations and compared with temperature. In the ratio equivalence ratio of 0.77-0.81 in the temperature range of 1500 °C (maximum), the value of NO is about 16 ppm (maximum), and the value of CO is about 2 ppm (minimum). That is, when the temperature is at its maximum, it becomes CO minimum and NO maximum. This can be used for different applications such as similar and industrial burners.

Progress in environmental monitoring and mitigation strategies for herbicides and insecticides: A comprehensive review

Herbicides and insecticides are pervasively applied in agricultural sector to increase the yield by controlling or eliminating bug vermin and weeds. Although, resistance development occurs, direct and indirect impact on human health and ecosystem is clearly visible. Normally, herbicides and pesticides are water soluble in nature; accordingly, it is hard to decrease their deadliness and to dis-appear them from the environment. They are profoundly specific, and considered as poisonous to various peoples in agricultural and industrial work places. In order to substantially reduce the harmful impacts, it is crucial to thoroughly examine the detection and mitigation measures for these compounds. The primary objective of this paper is to provide an overview of various herbicide and pesticide detection techniques and associated remedial techniques. A short summary on occurrence and harmful effects of herbicides/insecticides on ecosystem has been included to the study. The conventional and advanced, rapid techniques for the detection of insecticides and herbicides were described in detail. A detailed overview on several mitigation strategies including advanced oxidation, adsorption, electrochemical process, and bioremediation as well as the mechanism behind the strategic approaches to reduce the effects of growing pesticide pollution has been emphasized. Regardless of the detection techniques and mitigation strategies, the recent advances employed, obstacles, and perspectives have been discussed in detail.

Synergistic effects of Fe-based nanomaterial catalyst on humic substances formation and microplastics mitigation during sewage sludge composting

In this study, a novel Fe-based nanomaterial catalyst (Fe0/FeS) was synthesized via a self-heating process and employed to explore its impact on the formation of humic substances and the mitigation of microplastics. The results reveal that Fe0/FeS exhibited a significant increase in humic acid content (71.01 mg kg-1). Similarly, the formation of humic substances resulted in a higher humification index (4.91). Moreover, the addition of Fe0/FeS accelerated the degradation of microplastics (MPs), resulting in a lower concentration of MPs (9487 particles/kg) compared to the control experiments (22792 particles/kg). Fe0/FeS significantly increased the abundance of medium-sized MPs (50-200 μm) and reduced the abundance of small-sized (10-50 μm) and large-sized MPs (>1000 μm). These results can be attributed to the Fe0/FeS regulating the ▪OH production and specific microorganisms to promote humic substance formation and the degradation of MPs. This study proposes a feasible strategy to improve composting characteristics and reduce contaminants.

Assessing mercury contamination in Southern Hemisphere marine ecosystems: The role of penguins as effective bioindicators

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant known for its significant bioaccumulation and biomagnification capabilities, posing a particular threat to marine environments. Seabirds have been recognized as effective bioindicators of marine pollution, and, among them, penguins present a unique opportunity to serve as a single taxonomic group (Sphenisciformes) for monitoring Hg across distinct marine ecosystems in the Southern Hemisphere. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive systematic review of Hg concentrations, and performed a meta-analysis that took into account the various sources of uncertainty associated with Hg contamination in penguins. Beyond intrinsic species-specific factors shaping Hg levels, our results showed that the penguin community effectively reflects spatial patterns of Hg bioavailability. We identified geographic Hg hotspots in Australia, the Indian Ocean, and Tierra del Fuego, as well as coldspots in Perú and the South Atlantic. Furthermore, specific penguin species, namely the Southern Rockhopper (Eudyptes chrysocome) and Macaroni penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus), are highlighted as particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of Hg. Additionally, we identified knowledge gaps in geographic areas such as the Galápagos Islands, South Africa, and the coast of Chile, as well as in species including Fiordland (Eudyptes pachyrhynchus), Snares (Eudyptes robustus), Erect-crested (Eudyptes sclateri), Royal (Eudyptes schlegeli), Yellow-eyed (Megadyptes antipodes), and Galápagos (Spheniscus mendiculus) penguins. Overall, our study contributes to the growing body of literature emphasizing the role of penguins as bioindicators of Hg pollution, but it also highlights areas where further research and data collection are needed for a more comprehensive understanding of Hg contamination in marine ecosystems in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ferroptosis Induced by Pollutants: An Emerging Mechanism in Environmental Toxicology

Environmental pollutants have been recognized for their ability to induce various adverse outcomes in both the environment and human health, including inflammation, apoptosis, necrosis, pyroptosis, and autophagy. Understanding these biological mechanisms has played a crucial role in risk assessment and management efforts. However, the recent identification of ferroptosis as a form of programmed cell death has emerged as a critical mechanism underlying pollutant-induced toxicity. Numerous studies have demonstrated that fine particulates, heavy metals, and organic substances can trigger ferroptosis, which is closely intertwined with lipid, iron, and amino acid metabolism. Given the growing evidence linking ferroptosis to severe diseases such as heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, liver injury, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer, it is imperative to investigate the role of pollutant-induced ferroptosis. In this review, we comprehensively analyze various pollutant-induced ferroptosis pathways and intricate signaling molecules and elucidate their integration into the driving and braking axes. Furthermore, we discuss the potential hazards associated with pollutant-induced ferroptosis in various organs and four representative animal models. Finally, we provide an outlook on future research directions and strategies aimed at preventing pollutant-induced ferroptosis. By enhancing our understanding of this novel form of cell death and developing effective preventive measures, we can mitigate the adverse effects of environmental pollutants and safeguard human and environmental health.

Understanding the molecular mechanism of arsenic and ammonia toxicity and high-temperature stress in Pangasianodon hypophthalmus

The current investigation explores the mechanisms of ammonia and arsenic toxicity, along with high-temperature stress, which other researchers rarely addressed. Pangasianodon hypophthalmus was exposed to low doses of ammonia and arsenic (1/10th of LC50, 2.0 and 2.68 mg L-1, respectively) and high temperature (34 °C) for 105 days. The following treatments were applied: control (unexposed), arsenic (As), ammonia (NH3), ammonia + arsenic (NH3 + As), ammonia + temperature (NH3 + T), and NH3 + As + T. Cortisol levels significantly increased with exposure to ammonia (NH3), arsenic (As), and high temperature (34 °C) compared to the unexposed group. Heat shock protein (HSP 70), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and metallothionein (MT) gene expressions were notably upregulated by 122-210%, 98-122%, and 64-238%, respectively, compared to the control. Neurotransmitter enzymes (acetylcholine esterase, AChE) were significantly inhibited by NH3 + As + T, followed by other stressor groups. The apoptotic (caspase, Cas 3a and 3b) and detoxifying (cytochrome P450, CYP P450) pathways were substantially affected by the NH3 + As + T group. Immune (total immunoglobulin, Ig; tumor necrosis factor TNFα; and interleukin IL) and growth-related genes (growth hormone, GH; growth hormone regulator, GHR1 and GHRβ; myostatin, MYST and somatostatin, SMT) were noticeably upregulated by NH3 + As + T, followed by other stress groups, compared to the control group. Weight gain %, protein efficiency ratio, feed efficiency ratio, specific growth rate, and other growth attributes were significantly affected by low doses of ammonia, arsenic, and high-temperature stress. Albumin, total protein, globulin, A:G ratio, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were highly affected by the As + NH3 + T group. Blood profiling, including red blood cells (RBC), white blood count (WBC), and hemoglobin (Hb), were also impacted by stressor groups compared to the control group. Genotoxicity, as DNA damage, was significantly higher in groups exposed to NH3 + As + T (89%), NH3 + T (78%), NH3 (73), NH3 + As (71), and As (68%). The bioaccumulation of arsenic was substantially higher in liver and kidney tissues. The present study contributes to understanding the toxicity mechanisms of ammonia and arsenic, as well as high-temperature stress, through different gene expressions, biochemical attributes, genotoxicity, immunological status, and growth performance of P. hypophthalmus.

β-cyclodextrin polymer composites for the removal of pharmaceutical substances, endocrine disruptor chemicals, and dyes from aqueous solution- A review of recent trends

Cyclodextrin (CD) and its derivatives are receiving attention as a new-generation adsorbent for water pollution treatment due to their external hydrophilic and internal hydrophobic properties. Among types of CD, β-Cyclodextrin (βCD) has been a material of choice with a proven track record for a range of utilities in distinct domains, owing to its unique cage-like structural conformations and inclusion complex-forming ability, especially to mitigate emerging contaminants (ECs). This article outlines βCD composites in developing approaches of their melds and composites for purposes such as membranes for removal of the ECs in aqueous setups have been explored with emphasis on recent trends. Electrospinning has bestowed an entirely different viewpoint on polymeric materials, comprising βCD, in the framework of diverse functions across a multitude of niches. Besides, this article especially discusses βCD polymer composite membrane-based removal of contaminants such as pharmaceutical substances, endocrine disruptors chemicals, and dyes. Finally, in this article, the challenges and future directions of βCD-based adsorbents are discussed, which may shed light on pragmatic commercial applications of βCD polymer composite membranes.

On-farm Occurrence of Pharmaceuticals and Their Environmental Hazard: Case Study of a Tropical Dairy farm

Animal husbandry wastewaters represent an important source of pharmaceuticals into the environment. This work aimed to evaluate the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and their hazard in wastewater from a model dairy farm from Costa Rica. Among the seven pharmaceuticals detected (acetaminophen, caffeine, carbamazepine, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, risperidone, sulfamethazine), caffeine, ibuprofen and acetaminophen showed the highest concentrations, while caffeine, carbamazepine and risperidone were the most frequently detected compounds. High (HQ ≥ 1) or medium (0.1 ≤ HQ < 1) hazard were estimated for three (caffeine, ibuprofen, risperidone) and two (acetaminophen, ketoprofen) pharmaceuticals, respectively; similarly, high overall hazard (∑HQ) and significant ecotoxicity were determined in samples from all sampling points. According to our results, the release of these aqueous matrices is a matter of environmental concern, as the treated wastewater is used for farm irrigation or directly released into nearby water streams. This work contributes to the knowledge on the scarcely described occurrence and risk of pharmaceuticals in Latin American regions.

Interactions of organophosphate flame retardants with human drug transporters

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are environmental pollutants of increasing interest, widely distributed in the environment and exerting possible deleterious effects towards the human health. The present study investigates in vitro their possible interactions with human drug transporters, which are targets for environmental chemicals and actors of their toxicokinetics. Some OPFRs, i.e., tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate (TDCPP), tri-o-cresyl phosphate (TOCP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), were found to inhibit activities of some transporters, such as organic anion transporter 3 (OAT3), organic anion transporting polypeptide (OATP) 1B1, OATP1B3, organic cation transporter 2 (OCT2) or breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP). These effects were concentration-dependent, with IC50 values ranging from 6.1 µM (for TDCPP-mediated inhibition of OCT2) to 51.4 µM (for TOCP-mediated inhibition of BCRP). OPFRs also blocked the transporter-dependent membrane passage of endogenous substrates, notably that of hormones. OAT3 however failed to transport TBOEP and TPHP. OPFRs additionally repressed mRNA expressions of some transporters in cultured human hepatic HepaRG cells, especially those of OAT2 and OCT1 in response to TOCP, with IC50 values of 2.3 µM and 2.5 µM, respectively. These data therefore add OPFRs to the expanding list of pollutants interacting with drug transporters, even if OPFR concentrations required to impact transporters, in the 2-50 µM range, are rather higher than those observed in humans environmentally or dietarily exposed to these chemicals.

Recent advances in fungal xenobiotic metabolism: enzymes and applications

Fungi have been extensively studied for their capacity to biotransform a wide range of natural and xenobiotic compounds. This versatility is a reflection of the broad substrate specificity of fungal enzymes such as laccases, peroxidases and cytochromes P450, which are involved in these reactions. This review gives an account of recent advances in the understanding of fungal metabolism of drugs and pollutants such as dyes, agrochemicals and per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), and describes the key enzymes involved in xenobiotic biotransformation. The potential of fungi and their enzymes in the bioremediation of polluted environments and in the biocatalytic production of important compounds is also discussed.

Association between nickel exposure and body compositions in the United States: a population-based cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Increasing body fat or decreasing muscle and bone mass were associated with worse health outcomes in the adult population. The effects of nickel exposure on body composition are not known. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between urinary nickel levels and body compositions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two thousand seven hundred sixty-two participants were included in the analysis from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys of 2017-2018 after excluding participants who have missing data on urinary nickel and those with missing all body mass component data. We used weighted generalized linear models to explore the relationship between urinary nickel and body mass components under interpolating missing covariable values. Simultaneously, sensitivity analyses and subgroup analysis were conducted to verify stability of analysis result. Curve fitting and saturation effect analysis were used to explore the possible nonlinear relationship between urine nickel and body compositions.

RESULTS

Among the 2,762 participants, the average urinary nickel level was 1.58 ug/L. The weighted generalized linear models, the sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses found no significant linear relationship between urinary nickel and body compositions. For body weight, BMI, TLM, ALM, TRF, TOF and BMC, the urine nickel saturation effect values were 0.76, 0.74, 0.5, 0.67, 0.64, 0.48, and 0.45 ug/L, respectively. For each 1 ug/L rise in urinary nickel levels at levels below the turning point, body weight increases (β = 9.06, 95% CI = 2.75, 15.36, p = 0.01), BMI increases (β = 3.20, 95% CI = 1.36, 5.05, p =  < 0.001), TLM decreases (β = -47.39, 95% CI = -97.38, 2.59, p = 0.06), ALM decreases (β = -37.25, 95% CI = -63.25, -11.24, p = 0.01), TRF increases (β = 20.68, 95% CI = 1.50, 39.86, p = 0.03), TOF increases (β = 57.92, 95% CI = -0.12, 115.95, p = 0.05), and BMC decreases (β = -6.84, 95% CI = -12.64, -1.04, p = 0.02).

CONCLUSIONS

In summary, our study demonstrated that a dose-response relationship exists between urinary nickel and body compositions, with a low inflection point level of urinary nickel for the saturation effect.

Empirical model to assess leaching of pesticides in soil under a steady-state flow and tropical conditions

Abstract

An empirical model of leaching of pesticides was developed to simulate the concentration of fungicides throughout unsaturated soil. The model was based on chemical reactions and the travel time of a conservative tracer to represent the travel time required for water to flow between soil layers. The model's performance was then tested using experimental data from dimethomorph and pyrimethanil applied to the soil under field and laboratory conditions. The empirical model simulated fungicide concentration on soil solids and in soil solution at different depths over time (mean square error between 2.9 mg2 kg-2 and 61mg2 kg-2) using sorption percentages and degradation rates under laboratory conditions. The sorption process was affected by the organic carbon, clay, and the effective cation exchange capacity of the soil. The degradation rate values of dimethomorph (0.039 d-1-0.009 d-1) and pyrimethanil (0.053 d-1-0.004 d-1) decreased from 0 to 40 cm and then remained constant in deeper soil layers (60-80 cm). Fungicide degradation was a critical input in the model at subsurface layers. The model was determined to be a reliable mathematical tool to estimate the leachability of pesticides in tropical soil under a steady-state flow. It may be extended to other substances and soils for environmental risk assessment projects.

Latest advances in layered covalent organic frameworks for water and wastewater treatment

This review provides an overview of recent progress in the development of layered covalent organic frameworks (LCOFs) for the adsorption and degradation of pollutants in water and wastewater treatment. LCOFs have unique properties such as high surface area, porosity, and tunability, which make them attractive adsorbents and catalysts for water and wastewater treatment. The review covers the different synthesis methods for LCOFs, including self-assembly, co-crystallization, template-directed synthesis, covalent organic polymerization (COP), and solvothermal synthesis. It also covers the structural and chemical characteristics of LCOFs, their adsorption and degradation capacity for different pollutants, and their comparison with other adsorbents and catalysts. Additionally, it discussed the mechanism of adsorption and degradation by LCOFs, the potential applications of LCOFs in water and wastewater treatment, case studies and pilot-scale experiments, challenges, and limitations of using LCOFs, and future research directions. The current state of research on LCOFs for water and wastewater treatment is promising, however, more research is needed to improve their performance and practicality. The review highlights that LCOFs have the potential to significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of current water and wastewater treatment methods and can also have implications for policy and practice.

A review of non-destructive biomonitoring techniques to assess the impacts of pollution on reproductive health in frogs and toads

In anuran amphibians (frogs and toads), evidence linking pollution to population declines is limited, in particular through impaired reproduction. Here we review the evidence for pollutant-induced alterations on reproductive endpoints in wild anurans with a particular focus on the application of non-destructive endpoints including on sex ratios, male reproductive phenotypes (data are too scarce for females) and reproductive outputs (reflective of mating success). Data evidencing alterations in sex ratio in wild anurans are scarce, however, both feminisation and masculinisation in response to pollution have been reported (seven studies). Male nuptial pad morphology and calling behaviour display high sensitivity to pollutant-exposure and are important features determining male breeding success, however there is considerable variation in these endpoints and inconsistencies in the responses of them to pollution are reported in wild anurans. Data for clutch size are insufficient to assess sensitivity to pollutants (five studies only). However, hatch success and offspring fitness (tadpole survival/development) are sensitive to pollution, with clear linkages to population stability. In conclusion, there are a wide range of non destructive measures with good potential for application to assess/monitor reproductive health in wild anurans, however, a greater understanding of pollutant effects on these endpoints is needed. There measures deserve wider application as they are relatively simple and inexpensive to implement, and as they can be applied non-destructively are widely applicable to our declining anuran populations.

Biodegradable polymers boost reproduction in the earthworm Eisenia fetida

Microplastic contamination in soil has become a global environmental threat as it adversely affects terrestrial organisms like earthworms as well as soil properties. Especially biodegradable polymers have recently been used as an alternative to conventional polymer types, although their impact remains poorly understood. Thus, we studied the effect of conventional (polystyrene: PS, polyethylene terephthalate: PET, polypropylene: PP) versus aliphatic polyesters classified as biodegradable polymers (poly-(l-lactide): PLLA, polycaprolactone: PCL) on the earthworm Eisenia fetida and soil properties (pH and cation exchange capacity). We addressed direct effects on the weight gain and reproductive success of E. fetida, and indirect effects, like changes in the gut microbial composition as well as the production of short-chain fatty acids by the gut microbiota. Earthworms were exposed for eight weeks in an artificial soil amended with two environmentally relevant concentrations (1 % and 2.5 % (w/w)) of the different microplastic types. PLLA and PCL boosted the number of cocoons produced by 135 % and 54 % respectively. Additionally, exposure to these two polymers increased number of hatched juveniles, changed gut microbial beta-diversity, and increased the production of the short chain fatty acid lactate compared to the control treatments. Interestingly, we also found a positive effect of PP on the earthworm's bodyweight and reproductive success. The interaction of microplastic and earthworms decreased soil pH by about 1.5 units in the presence of PLLA and PCL. No polymer effect on the cation exchange capacity of soil was found. In general, neither the presence of conventional nor biodegradable polymers had any adverse effects on any of the studied endpoints. Our results suggest that the effects of microplastic highly depend on the polymer type, and that the degradation of biodegradable polymers might be enhanced in the gut of earthworms, which implies that they may use biodegradable polymers as a potential carbon source.

Origin of non-exhaust PM in cities by individual analysis of particles collected by honey bees (Apis mellifera)

Urban areas present multiple challenges to scientists interested in unraveling the source, transport, and fate of airborne particulate matter (PM). Airborne PM consists of a heterogeneous mixture of particles with different sizes, morphologies, and chemical compositions. However, standard air quality stations only detect the mass concentration of PM mixtures with aerodynamic diameters ≤10 μm (PM₁₀) and/or ≤ 2.5 μm (PM_2.5). During honey bee foraging flights, airborne PM up to 10 μm in size attaches to their bodies, making them suitable for collecting spatiotemporal data on airborne PM. The individual particulate chemistry of this PM can be assessed using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy on a sub-micrometer scale, allowing accurate identification and classification of the particles. Herein, we analyzed the PM fractions of 10-2.5 μm, 2.5-1 μm, and below 1 μm in average geometric diameter collected by bees from hives located in the city of Milan, Italy. Bees showed contamination by natural dust, originating from soil erosion and rock outcropping in the foraging area, and particles with recurrent heavy metal content, most likely attributed to vehicular braking systems and possibly tires (non-exhaust PM). Notably, approximately 80% of non-exhaust PM was ≤1 μm in size. This study provides a possible alternative strategy to apportion the finer fraction of PM in urban areas and determine citizens' exposure. Our findings may also prompt decision-makers to issue policy addressal for non-exhaust pollution, especially for the ongoing restructuring of European regulations on mobility and the shift toward electric vehicles whose contribution to PM pollution is debated.

Perfluorooctanoic acid in the sediment matrices of Arctic fjords, Svalbard

Per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFASs) are very toxic industrial compounds, and fewer studies have been conducted on their presence in the sedimentary environment of the polar region. The present study is a preliminary assessment of the concentration and distribution of PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid) in selected fjord systems of the Svalbard archipelago, Norwegian Arctic. The ∑PFOA observed for Smeerenburgfjorden, Krossfjorden, Kongsfjorden Hotmiltonbuktafjorden, Raudfjorden and Magdalenefjorden were 1.28 ng/g, 0.14 ng/g, 0.68 ng/g, 6.54 ng/g, 0.41 ng/g and BDL respectively. Of the twenty-three fjord samples studied, the sediments from Hotmiltonbuktafjorden exhibited the presence of a higher concentration of PFOA in the sediment matrices. More studies are needed to understand their fate in the sedimentary environment with respect to the physio-chemical properties of the sediments.

Biodiesel exhaust particle airway toxicity and the role of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Renewable alternatives to fossil diesel (FD) including fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) biodiesel have become more prevalent. However, toxicity of exhaust material from their combustion, relative to the fuels they are displacing has not been fully characterised. This study was carried out to examine particle toxicity within the lung epithelium and the role for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Exhaust particles from a 20% (v/v) blend of FAME biodiesel had little impact on primary airway epithelial toxicity compared to FD derived particles but did result in an altered profile of PAHs, including an increase in particle bound carcinogenic B[a]P. Higher blends of biodiesel had significantly increased levels of more carcinogenic PAHs, which was associated with a higher level of stress response gene expression including CYP1A1, NQO1 and IL1B. Removal of semi-volatile material from particulates abolished effects on airway cells. Particle size difference and toxic metals were discounted as causative for biological effects. Finally, combustion of a single component fuel (Methyl decanoate) containing the methyl ester molecular structure found in FAME mixtures, also produced more carcinogenic PAHs at the higher fuel blend levels. These results indicate the use of FAME biodiesel at higher blends may be associated with an increased particle associated carcinogenic and toxicity risk.

Mercury in the Amazon: The danger of a single story

Amazon conservation is essential for the global future. Mercury is currently among the worst global pollutants and most (78.5%) of the South-American emissions are from the Amazon. Current Brazilian legislation on mining activities and trade of gold, and economic interests in soy, beef and large-scale projects such as dams, are key influences in mercury mobilization and emissions in the Amazon with the potential to affect the global environment. However, banning mercury in mining, while desirable, is not an efficient strategy if no other action is taken. The interconnected issues, such as exports (soy, beef and gold) and energy generation, must be addressed together to provide effective protection for human health and the environment. Realistically, to improve mercury emissions in the Amazon, we must stop looking solely at "the single story" (a limited view of reality) of supposedly "artisanal and small-scale gold mining" in the region and understand the complex economic, social, political, and international aspects of this problem. We propose some recommendations for international agencies, governments, communities and the private sector.

Chitosan-based composite hydrogel with a rigid-in-flexible network structure for pH-universal ultra-efficient removal of dye

Polysaccharide-based hydrogel adsorbents become popular because of their high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate, but their low removal rate and poor pH resistance have always been fatal shortcomings. Herein, a feasible strategy was proposed to strengthen the ability of hydrogel adsorbent to remove organic pollutants (i.e., dye) by incorporating natural rectorite (REC) into chitosan-g-poly (2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane-sulfonic-acid) hydrogel network to form a rectorite-in-polymer network structure. The introduction of less dosage of REC (1.2 wt%) into the hydrogel facilitates to improve its adsorption capacities toward methylene blue (MB) in deionized water, tap water, seawater, Yangtze River water, and Yellow River water (1083.39-1303.49 mg/g); while incorporating higher content of REC (15.8 wt% REC) helps to improve the removal rate (99.6 % for MB in real waters), which are greatly superior to commercial activated carbons. The adsorbent keeps high adsorption efficiency in a broad pH range (2-11), and can be reused for >4 times.

A systematic review on mitigation of common indoor air pollutants using plant-based methods: a phytoremediation approach

Environmental pollution, especially indoor air pollution, has become a global issue and affects nearly all domains of life. Being both natural and anthropogenic substances, indoor air pollutants lead to the deterioration of the ecosystem and have a negative impact on human health. Cost-effective plant-based approaches can help to improve indoor air quality (IAQ), regulate temperature, and protect humans from potential health risks. Thus, in this review, we have highlighted the common indoor air pollutants and their mitigation through plant-based approaches. Potted plants, green walls, and their combination with bio-filtration are such emerging approaches that can efficiently purify the indoor air. Moreover, we have discussed the pathways or mechanisms of phytoremediation, which involve the aerial parts of the plants (phyllosphere), growth media, and roots along with their associated microorganisms (rhizosphere). In conclusion, plants and their associated microbial communities can be key solutions for reducing indoor air pollution. However, there is a dire need to explore advanced omics technologies to get in-depth knowledge of the molecular mechanisms associated with plant-based reduction of indoor air pollutants.

Pollutant-induced pyroptosis in humans and other animals

Pyroptosis is a form of lytic cell death with pro-inflammatory characteristics, induced upon the activation of certain inflammatory caspases by inflammasome complexes such as NLRP3 inflammasome. Gasdermin proteins as the mediators of pyroptosis form cell membrane pores upon activation, which release certain cellular contents into the extracellular space including inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-18, and also damage the integrity of the cell membrane. Gasdermins have been implicated in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases, deafness and cancer. Mostly in the last 2 years, diverse pollutant types including particulate matter, cadmium and polystyrene microplastics were reported to induce pyroptotic cell death in diverse tissues from mammals to birds. In the present study, we review our current understanding of pollutant-induced pyroptosis as well as current knowledge of upstream events leading to pyroptotic cell death upon exposure to pollutants.

Characterization of ingested MPs and their relation with growth parameters of endemic and invasive fish from a coastal wetland

Microplastic (MP) contamination is a persistent and ubiquitous threat to aquatic ecosystems. This study quantifies MP ingestion by fish inhabiting the Anzali Wetland (Iran), a hotspot of biodiversity. Growth parameters have been monitored in endemic demersal fish (Caspian spined loach, Sabanejewia caspia), and invasive benthopelagic species (Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio) in the wetland and compared with their internal content of MPs. MPs were extracted from the gastrointestinal (GI) tracts following digestion of the samples in alkaline medium and observation of the extracts with microscopy (Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with an Energy-Dispersive X-ray microanalyzer (SEM-EDS) and confocal Raman microscopy). A total of 84.6 % of the study fish (n = 26) were contaminated with MPs. Fibres were the only type of MPs found in the GI tracts, and these were mainly dark blue and made of polycarbonate and nylon in both investigated species. The mean numbers of MPs in the GI tracts of the carp and the loach were 3.6 and 3.7 respectively. MPs had smooth surfaces in most cases although some presented brittle, fragmented, and uneven surfaces and signs of degradation. The growth rates of Carassius gibelio and Sabanejewia caspia, measured with the b value (growth factor), were 2.91 and 2.15 respectively. Carassius gibelio can play a significant role in the transport of MPs to other aquatic organisms inhabiting the Anzali wetland, and hence can cause potential harm to them. Carassius gibelio MP contamination was more pronounced with increasing gut mass in older specimens. Due to the presence of MPs and in fish that can be consumed, there could be a trophic transfer to humans. Regarding Sabanejewia caspia, although not statistically significant, their uptake of MPs tends to increase in older specimens with smaller size and body weight. This can imply that MP pollution causes inappropriate conditions and results in negative growth. The findings of this work provide new insights into MP contamination in the Anzali wetland, specifically in endemic fish. These results will be important in conservation and management programs.

The relationship between air pollutants and gestational diabetes: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis

PURPOSE

Air pollution is an environmental stimulus that may predispose pregnant women to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to investigate the relationship between air pollutants and GDM.

METHODS

PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were systematically searched for retrieving English articles published from January 2020 to September 2021, investigating the relationship of exposure to ambient air pollution or levels of air pollutants with GDM and related parameters, including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin resistance, and impaired glucose tolerance. Heterogeneity and publication bias were evaluated using I-squared (I2), and Begg's statistics, respectively. We also performed the subgroup analysis for particulate matters (PM2.5, PM10), Ozone (O3), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the different exposure periods.

RESULTS

A total of 13 studies examining 2,826,544 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Compared to non-exposed women, exposure to PM2.5 increases the odds (likelihood of occurrence outcome) of GDM by 1.09 times (95% CI 1.06, 1.12), whereas exposure to PM10 has more effect by OR of 1.17 (95% CI 1.04, 1.32). Exposure to O3 and SO2 increases the odds of GDM by 1.10 times (95% CI 1.03, 1.18) and 1.10 times (95% CI 1.01, 1.19), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of the study show a relationship between air pollutants PM2.5, PM10, O3, and SO2 and the risk of GDM. Although evidence from various studies can provide insights into the linkage between maternal exposure to air pollution and GDM, more well-designed longitudinal studies are recommended for precise interpretation of the association between GDM and air pollution by adjusting all potential confounders.

Optimization of Cr (VI) removal from aqueous solution with activated carbon derived from Eichhornia crassipes under response surface methodology

Tannery industries' effluent contains a high concentration of Cr (VI) which has the potential to affect the environment and public health. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the optimization of Cr (VI) adsorption by activated carbon (AC) derived from Eichhornia crassipes from an aqueous solution. The adsorbent was activated with dilute sulfuric acid followed by thermal activation. AC was characterized using proximate analysis, SEM, FTIR, X-ray diffraction, and the BET method. The Cr (VI) removal optimization process was performed using a central composite design under the response surface methodology. The proximate analysis showed that the moisture content, volatile matter, ash content, and fixed carbon of the activated carbon were 5.6%, 18.2%, 14.4%, and 61.8% respectively. The surface areas of the Eichhornia crassipes before activation, after activation, and after adsorption were 60.6 g/m², 794.2 g/m², and 412.6 g/m² respectively. A highly porous structure with heterogeneous and irregular shapes was observed in the SEM micrograph. In the FTIR analysis, different peaks are indicated with various functional groups. The intensity of XRD peaks decreased as 2 theta values increased, which indicates the presence of an amorphous carbon arrangement. The point of zero charge (pH_pzc) of the activated carbon was found to be 5.20. A maximum Cr (VI) removal of 98.4% was achieved at pH 5, contact time 90 min, adsorbent dose 2 g, and initial Cr (VI) concentration of 2.25 mg/L. Statistically significant interactions (P < 0.05) were observed between the initial Cr (VI) concentration and adsorbent dose as well as the initial Cr (VI) concentration and contact time. Langmuir adsorption isotherm fitted the experimental data best, with an R² value of 0.99. The separation constant (RL) indicates that the adsorption process is favorable. The kinetic experimental data were best fitted with the pseudo-second-order model with an R² value of 0.99 whereas the adsorption rate is controlled by intraparticle and extragranular diffusion processes. Generally, the AC has the potential to be a strong adsorbent candidate for wastewater treatment at the industrial level.

Effect of inorganic salt on the removal of typical pollutants in wastewater by RuO2/TiO2 via catalytic wet air oxidation

The treatment of high-salinity and high-organic wastewater is a tough task, with the removal of organic matter and the separation of salts often mutually restricting. Catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) coupled desalination technology (membrane distillation (MD), membrane bioreactor (MBR), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), etc.) provides an effective method to simultaneously degrade the high-salinity (via desalination) and high-organic matters (via CWAO) in wastewater. In this work, five kinds of RuO₂/TiO₂ catalysts with different calcination temperatures were prepared for CWAO of maleic acid wastewater with a theoretical chemical oxygen demand (COD) value of 20,000 mg L^-1. RuO₂/TiO₂ series catalysts demonstrated prominent salt resistance, with more than 80% TOC removal rates in the CWAO system containing 5 wt% Na₂SO₄; while RuO₂/TiO₂-350 showed the best degradation performance in both non-salinity and Na₂SO₄-containing conditions. Multiple characterization techniques, such as XRD, BET, XPS, NH₃-TPD and TEM etc., verified the physicochemical structure of RuO₂/TiO₂ catalysts, and their influence on the degradation of pollutants. The calcination temperature was found to have a direct impact on the specific surface area, pore volume, oxygen vacancies and acid sites of catalysts, which in turn affected the ultimate catalytic activity. Furthermore, we also investigated the performance of the RuO₂/TiO₂-350 catalyst for the treatment of acids, alcohols and aromatic compounds with the addition of NaCl or Na₂SO₄, proving its good universality and excellent salt resistance in saline wastewater. Meanwhile, the relationship between the structure of three types of organic compounds and the degradation effect in the CWAO system was also explored.

Establishment of a method to expose and measure pollution in excised porcine skin with electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy

Health problems associated with the amount of air pollutants are increasing worldwide. Pollution damages not only the lungs; it also has an impact on skin health and is co-responsible for the development of skin diseases. Anti-pollution products are on the rise in the cosmetic market but so far, there is no established method to directly assess the impact of pollution on the skin and to test the efficacy of anti-pollution products. To address this problem, two different chambers were developed for the reproducible exposure to realistic air pollutant concentrations. One chamber for the exclusive use of excised skin and hair samples, the second chamber for ex vivo and in vivo measurements. Measurements of nicotine next to the investigated skin area allow conclusions to be drawn on the particle concentration to which the skin is exposed. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, which enables the detection of free radicals in different systems, was applied to assess the hazard potential of pollution in the skin. A direct proof of the formation of free radicals in the skin by the model pollutant cigarette smoke could be demonstrated. An additional application of UV irradiation even increased the formation of free radicals in the skin seven-fold (sum parameter). Depending on the question of interest, the use of different spin probes allows various assessments of the radical formation in skin: the amount of radicals but also the antioxidant status of the microenvironment can be estimated. Using two exposure chambers, the direct formation of oxidative stress by cigarette smoke on ex vivo skin, with and without additional UV exposure, could be reproducibly examined. This measurement method is promising for the assessment of anti-pollution products and could allow a direct causal connection between pollutant, effect on the skin and the protective function of skin care products.

Engineering MOFs derived metal oxide nanohybrids: Towards electrochemical sensing of catechol in tea samples

In this work, we have successfully developed Cu-MOF/CuO/NiO nanocomposites (NCs) and employed as a novel electrochemical sensing platform in catechol (CC) detection. The Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) along Energy dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are carried out to characterize the as-fabricated Cu-MOF/CuO/NiO NCs. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques have used to obtain oxidation peak currents of CC. Glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with Cu-MOF/CuO/NiO has exposed the superb EC properties representing low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0078 µM (S/N = 3). To assess the practicability of Cu-MOF/CuO/NiO based sensing medium, it has been used to detect CC from two varieties of tea, namely black and green. Thus, we anticipate that this structural integration strategy possesses encouraging application potential in sensing podium and material synthesis.

Exposure to levonorgestrel-based birth control pill in early life and its persistent effects in zebrafish

The consumption of progestins has increased considerably in recent decades, as has their disposal into the environment. These substances can negatively affect the reproduction, physiology, and behavior of non-target organisms, such as fish. We aimed to evaluate the effects of exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of levonorgestrel-control birth based (1.3, 13.3, 133, and 1330 ng/L) on the development and behavior of zebrafish (Danio rerio) in terms of mortality, hatching, spontaneous movement, and larval and adult behavioral tests. Exposure caused anxiogenic-like behavior in larvae, which persisted in adults, as demonstrated by the light-dark test. In contrast, it caused anxiolytic-like behavior in the novel tank test. There was a high mortality rate at all tested concentrations and increases in the hormone cortisol at 13.3 ng/L that affected the sex ratio. These changes may lead to an ecological imbalance, emphasizing the risk of early exposure to progestins in the environment.

Application of magnetic carbon nanocomposite from agro-waste for the removal of pollutants from water and wastewater

Water pollution has significant impact on water usage, and various contaminants, such as organic and inorganic compounds, heavy metals, dyes, pharmaceuticals compounds, pathogens and radioactive compounds, are implicated. The quest for globalisation, structural developments and other related anthropogenic activities promote the release of contaminants that induce water pollution. Hence, treatment and remediation options that can remove pollutants from watercourses and wastewater have been developed. Applied nanotechnology using carbon nanocomposites has recently drawn attention because it has the advantages of low preparation cost, high surface area, pore volume and environmental stability. Magnetic carbon nanocomposites usually exhibit excellent performance in adsorbing contaminants from aqueous solutions, and thus expanding the use of nanotechnology in water treatment is of great importance. Therefore, this review explores the geographical outlook of water pollution, sources of water pollution and types of contaminants found in water and discusses the use of carbon nanocomposites as an emerging sustainable technology for water pollutant removal. The various properties of carbon-based composites influence the extent of pollutant adsorption during water treatment processes. Most carbon-based nanocomposites are generated from biomass produced by agro-waste materials. Magnetic activated carbon nanocomposites produced from walnut shells and rice husk waste can remove 78% of Cd(II) from contaminated aqueous systems. Magnetic nanocomposites from peanut shell, tea waste, curcumin nanoparticles, sunflower head waste, rice husk, hydrophyte biomass, palm waste and sugarcane bagasse facilitate hydrothermal carbonisation, chemical precipitation, co-precipitation, chemical activation, calcination and fast pyrolysis. These nanocomposites have benefitted wastewater treatment by increasing efficiency in removing pharmaceutical, dye and organic contaminants, such as promazine, ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin, rhodamine 6G, methyl blue, phenol and phenanthrene. Hence, this review discusses the relatively low costs, good biocompatibility, large surface-to-volume ratio, magnetic separation capability and reusability carbon materials and highlights the advantages of using magnetic carbon nanocomposites in the removal of contaminants from water or wastewater through adsorption mechanisms.

Lignosulfonate valorization into a Cu-containing magnetically recyclable photocatalyst for treating wastewater pollutants in aqueous media

This study presents an eco-friendly and economical process for preparing a magnetic copper complex conjugated to modified calcium lignosulfonate (LS) through a diamine (Fe₃O₄@LS@naphthalene-1,5-diamine@copper complex; FLN-Cu) as a green and novel catalyst. The prepared catalyst was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), elemental mapping, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) techniques. The photocatalytic performance of the synthesized FLN-Cu catalyst was investigated by the degradation of aqueous solutions of dyes such as Rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and Congo red (CR) under UV irradiation. The dye degradation was followed by UV-Vis (ultraviolet-visible) spectrophotometry by measuring the changes in absorbance. The effects of different factors such as pH, contact time, photocatalyst dosage, and initial concentration of dye on the adsorption percentage were also investigated. Moreover, the catalyst showed high stability and could be readily separated from the reaction media using a magnet and reused five times without a remarkable loss of catalytic ability.

Dynamics of pollutant emissions from wildfires in Mainland China

We analyzed the dynamics of pollutant emissions from wildfires in mainland China from 2001 to 2019 using MODIS fire products combined with the measurements of emission factors of different vegetation types. The biomass distribution in Mainland China has heterogeneous temporal and spatial pattern, with inter-year variations and a decreasing trend from east to west. Overall, from 2001 to 2019, biomass combustion in Mainland China reached 479.59 Tg (25.24 Tg·a-1), in which northeast, north, east, south, central, northwest, and southwest regions accounted for 20.95%, 31.14%, 8.89%, 9.06%, 3.98%, 0.33% and 25.64% of total biomass combustion, respectively. The emissions of CO, CO₂, CxHy, NOx, PM_2.5, TC, OC and EC were 47.30, 288.05, 12.90, 0.40, 1.43, 0.83, 0.70, and 0.12 Tg (1 Tg = 10¹²g), respectively. PM_2.5, TC and OC emissions increased in the southwest, while all pollutant emissions declined significantly in the southern region. For particulate matter from wildfires, both the ratio of its emissions to total dust and the ratio of its concentration to atmospheric PM_2.5 showed an increasing trend, implying that the relative environmental impacts of particulate emissions from wildfires may be rising. In addition, our results show that the current Chinese wildfire management has successfully reduced on average more than 80% of pollutant emissions from wildfire from 2001 to 2019 compared to the natural wildfire regime (no strict wildfire management). This research on the temporal-spatial changes of pollutant emissions from wildfires in Mainland China provides support for further exploration of wildfire impacts on regional environments, and indicates the effectiveness of Chinese current wildfire policy on the pollutant emission mitigation.

Carbon dots for multicolor cell imaging and ultra-sensitive detection of multiple ions in living cells: One Stone for multiple Birds

Given the significant impact of ions on environment pollution and human health, it is urgently needed to establish effective and convenient ion detection approaches, particularly in living cells. In this paper, we constructed multicolor N-doped-carbon dots (mPD-CDs) by facile one-step hydrothermal carbonization of m-phenylenediamine (mPD). mPD-CDs were successfully deployed for multicolor cellular imaging for animal cells, fungi, and bacteria in a wash-free way with high photostability and satisfactory biocompability. Moreover, mPD-CDs can be used as a fluorescent sensing probe for ultrasensitive detection of both iodide ion (I^-) and typical heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd²⁺), copper (Cu²⁺), mercury (Hg²⁺), gadolinium (Gd³⁺), ferrous ion (Fe²⁺), Zinc (Zn²⁺), and ferric ion (Fe³⁺). This is the first report using CDs as optical sensing probe for the detection of Gd³⁺, and for detection of Fe³⁺ with fluorescence "turn on". More significantly, with these versatile and fascinating properties, we applied mPD-CDs for intracellular ion detection in living cells like Hep G2 and S. cerevisiae, and zebra fish. Altogether, mPD-CDs displayed great potential for multicolor cell imaging and the multiple ion detection in vitro and in vivo, presenting a promising strategy for in-situ ultrasensitive sensing of multiple metal ions in the environment and the biological systems.

Adsorption of basic fuchsin using soybean straw hydrolyzed by subcritical water

The valorization of agro-industrial residues can be improved through their full use, making the production of second-generation ethanol viable. In this scenario, hydrolyzed soybean straw generated from a subcritical water process was applied to the basic fuchsin adsorption. At pH eight, a high adsorption capacity was obtained. The mass test results showed that basic fuchsin's removal and adsorption capacity could be maximized with an adsorbent dosage of 0.9 g L-1. The linear driving force model was suitable for predicting the kinetic profile, and the kinetic curves showed that equilibrium was reached with only 30 min of contact time. Besides, the Langmuir model was the best to predict the adsorption isotherms. The thermodynamic parameters revealed a spontaneous and endothermic process. At 328 K, there is maximum adsorption capacity (72.9 mg g-1). Therefore, it can be stated that this material could be competitive in terms of adsorption capacity coupled with the idea of full use of waste.

Facile insitu preparation of silver nanoparticles supported on petroleum asphaltene-derived porous carbon for efficient reduction of nitrophenols

Herein, a facile in situ approach to synthesize catalytically active Ag nanoparticles supported on eco-friendly asphaltene-derived porous carbon (APC) was reported. Asphaltene-derived porous carbon was used as support for the first time for Ag@APC to prevent nanoparticles from aggregation, and then was evaluated as catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (PNP), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). The synthesized Ag nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, UV, BET, FESEM, TEM, and ICP analyses, revealing the formation of uniformly distributed, fcc structured crystalline Ag nanoparticles with BET surface area varied between 1500 and 1723 cm⁻¹ with a porous carbon surface. Ag@APC nanocatalyst showed high catalytic efficiency in the reduction of nitrophenols in the presence of NaBH₄ under mild conditions. The reduction of PNP, DNP, and TNP have pseudo-first-order rate constants of 0.3340, 0.2570, and 0.2408 min⁻¹, respectively. The catalyst could be recyclable and reused for at least five successive runs without losing its original activity.

The role of MOF based nanocomposites in the detection of phenolic compounds for environmental remediation- A review

Phenolic compounds would be the emerging pollutant by 2050, because of their wide spread applicability in daily life and therefore the adoption of suitable detection methods in which identification and separation of isomers is highly desirable. Owing to the fascinating features, Metal-organic framework (MOF), a class of reticular materials holds a large surface area with tunable shape and adjustable porosity will provide strong interaction with analytes through abundant functional groups resulting in high selectivity towards electrochemical determination of phenolic isomers. Nevertheless, the sensing performance can still be further improved by building MOF network (intrinsic resistance) with functional (conducting) materials, resulting in MOF based nanocomposite. Herein, this review provides the summary of MOF based nanocomposites for electrochemical sensing of phenolic compounds developed from 2015. In this review, we discussed the demerits of pristine MOF as electrode materials, and the requirement of new class of MOF with functional materials such as nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes, graphene and MXene. The history and evolution of MOF nanocomposite-based materials are discussed and also featured the impressive physical and chemical properties. Besides this review discusses the factors influencing the conducting pathway and mass transport of MOF based nanocomposite for enhanced sensing performance of phenolic compounds with suitable mechanistic illustrations. Finally, the major challenges governing the determination of phenolic compounds and the future advancements required for the development of MOF based electrodes for various applications are highlighted.

Impact of 5-fluorouracil on anaerobic digestion using sewage sludge

The role of bacterial interaction is vital to control bacterial functions; however, it has not been fully understood in microbial consortia (including anaerobic digestion). In this study, fluorouracil (FU), which is an anticancer agent and a quorum sensing (QS) inhibitor to some of the Gram-negative bacteria was found to inhibit methane production from sewage sludge under anaerobic conditions, as shown in a result where methane production in the presence of FU was eight times lower than the control (sewage sludge without FU). Whereas FU did not influence the hydrolysis process, in the acidogenesis/acetogenesis process, butyrate, and acetate accumulated in samples with FU. Also, in the methanogenesis process, FU remarkably inhibited methane production by acetoclastic methanogens rather than by the hydrogenotrophic ones. This result agreed with the result that growth and methane production of Methanosarcina acetivorans C2A was inhibited in the presence of FU. However, the inhibitory effect of FU was high in the condition that both bacteria and archaea were active. It indicates that FU influences methanogens and bacteria in the process of methane fermentation. The analyses of microbial communities (bacteria and archaea) showed that the abundance ratio of the Firmicutes phyla is high, and hydrogenotrophic methanogens become dominant in the presence of FU. Conversely, the abundance of Spirochaetes significantly decreased under FU. The inhibition of methane production by FU was due to the growth inhibition of methanogenic archaea and the changes in the composition of the bacterial population.

Advances in the application of immobilized enzyme for the remediation of hazardous pollutant: A review

Nowadays, ecofriendly, low-cost, and sustainable alternatives techniques have been focused on the effective removal of hazardous pollutants from the water streams. In this context, enzyme immobilization seems to be of specific interest to several researchers to develop novel, effective, greener, and hybrid strategies for the removal of toxic contaminants. Immobilization is a biotechnological tool, anchoring the enzymes on support material to enhance the stability and retain the structural conformation of enzymes for catalysis. Recyclability and reusability are the main merits of immobilized enzymes over free enzymes. Studies showed that immobilized enzyme laccase can be used up to 7 cycles with 66% efficiency, peroxidase can be recycled to 2 cycles with 50% efficiency, and also cellulase to 3 cycles with 91% efficiency. In this review, basic concepts of immobilization, different immobilization techniques, and carriers used for immobilization are summarized. In addition to that, the potential of immobilized enzymes as the bioremediation agents for the effective degradation of pollutants from the contaminated zone and the impact of different operating parameters are summarized in-depth. Further, this review provides future trends and challenges that have to be solved shortly for enhancing the potential of immobilized systems for large-scale industrial wastewater treatment.

Construction of K and Tb Co-doped MnO2 nanoparticles for enhanced oxidation and detoxication of organic dye waste

Developing low-cost and efficient materials for dye pollutant removal under mild condition remains a great challenge. Here K⁺ and Tb³⁺ co-doped porous MnO₂ (K-Tb-MnO₂) nanoparticles with tailored properties including crystal structure, surface area and catalytic activity have been synthesized. Experimental results reveal that K-Tb-MnO₂ nanoparticle has higher specific surface area, Mn³⁺ content and surface oxygen vacancies than pristine MnO₂ nanoparticle and single-doped MnO₂ materials, showing the uniqueness of dual-doped metal ions. Using methyl blue (MB) as a model pollutant, its removal efficiency by K-Tb-MnO₂ nanoparticles within 5 min is 93.6%, which is 18, 8.3, and 2.9 times higher than that of MnO₂, K-MnO₂, and Tb-MnO₂ nanomaterials, respectively. Oxalic acid triggered MnO₂ material dissolving assay and FT-IR spectrum suggested that remarkable performance of K-Tb-MnO₂ nanoparticle toward MB removal can be attributed to a combined effect of adsorption (16% MB removal) and catalytic degradation (84% MB removal). Moreover, K-Tb-MnO₂ nanoparticle mediated MB degradation is demonstrated to be a combination of non-radical oxidation by Mn³⁺ and radical-participated degradation, with ¹O₂ as the main species. And the intermediates and pathways of MB degradation were studied by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Importantly, cell viability experiment suggests that the toxicity of MB dye could be efficiently alleviated after the treatment with K-Tb-MnO₂ nanoparticle. These results demonstrate the great potential of the novel K-Tb-MnO₂ particles to be used as a highly effective nanomaterials to reduce the risk of dye wastes toward the environment and human health.

Recent advances of ordered mesoporous silica materials for solid-phase extraction

This review mainly focuses on the development and application of ordered mesoporous silica materials for solid-phase extraction in recent years. It overviews not only bare mesoporous silica but also the functionalized mesoporous silica with organic groups, molecularly imprinted polymers, and magnetic materials. These mesoporous silica materials were used as the extraction adsorbents in cartridge solid-phase extraction, dispersive solid-phase extraction, magnetic solid-phase extraction, micro-solid-phase extraction and matrix solid phase dispersion. Coupled with atomic emission spectrometry, chromatography or other detection methods, these techniques efficiently extracted and sensitively determined various targets, such as metal ions, perfluorocarboxylic acids, pesticides, drugs, endocrine disruptors, phenols, flavanones, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, parabens and so on. Based on unique advantages of mesoporous silica materials, the developed analytical method successfully analyzed different matrix samples, like environmental water samples, soil samples, food samples, biological samples and cosmetics. In addition, the prospects of these materials in solid-phase extraction are presented, which can offer an outlook for the further development and applications.

Interactions between soil protists and pollutants: An unsolved puzzle

Soil protists are essential but often overlooked in soils, although they play crucial functional roles in the terrestrial ecosystem. While soil protists have drawn increased attention to their functional role in soils, their interaction with soil pollutants remains unresolved. This review provides a first overview of the current understanding of interactions between soil protists and major pollutants (heavy metals, organic pollutants, nanoparticles, and soil pathogens). We summarize how soil pollutants affect protists and vice versa, showing that we are just beginning to understand their complex interactions. In addition, we identify five research gaps, including hidden diversity, adaptive mechanisms, species interactions, soil bioindicators and environmental applications, and we hope that our review will help promote and build research guidelines for the future. In conclusion, a better understanding of soil pollutant-protist interactions will significantly increase our knowledge of the pollution ecology in the soil and how soil organisms respond and adapt to environmental pollution, which will contribute to the bioremediation and environmental applications of protists in soil.

Differential effects of two prevalent environmental pollutants on host-pathogen dynamics

Chemical pollutants are a major factor implicated in freshwater habitat degradation and species loss. Microplastics and glyphosate-based herbicides are prevalent pollutants with known detrimental effects on animal welfare but our understanding of their impacts on infection dynamics are limited. Within freshwater vertebrates, glyphosate formulations reduce fish tolerance to infections, but the effects of microplastic consumption on disease tolerance have thus far not been assessed. Here, we investigated how microplastic (polypropylene) and the commercial glyphosate-based herbicide, Roundup®, impact fish tolerance to infectious disease and mortality utilising a model fish host-pathogen system. For uninfected fish, microplastic and Roundup had contrasting impacts on mortality as individual stressors, with microplastic increasing and Roundup decreasing mortality compared with control fish not exposed to pollutants. Concerningly, microplastic and Roundup combined had a strong interactive reversal effect by significantly increasing host mortality for uninfected fish (73% mortality). For infected fish, the individual stressors also had contrasting effects on mortality, with microplastic consumption not significantly affecting mortality and Roundup increasing mortality to 55%. When combined, these two pollutants had a moderate interactive synergistic effect on mortality levels of infected fish (53% mortality). Both microplastic and Roundup individually had significant and contrasting impacts on pathogen metrics with microplastic consumption resulting in fish maintaining infections for significantly longer and Roundup significantly reducing pathogen burdens. When combined, the two pollutants had a largely additive effect in reducing pathogen burdens. This study is the first to reveal that microplastic and Roundup individually and interactively impact host-pathogen dynamics and can prove fatal to fish.

Synthetic estrogen bioaccumulates and changes the behavior and biochemical biomarkers in adult zebrafish

Estrogen is considered to be an endocrine disrupter and is becoming increasingly more prevalent in the daily life of humans. In some cases, estrogen is not fully metabolized by organisms and may be excreted in either its original form or in organic complex forms, into water residue systems reaching concentrations of 0.05 ng.L^-1 to 75 ng.L^-1. However, estrogen 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), which is used in oral contraceptives, is very difficult to remove from water. Here, we evaluated whether the synthetic hormone, EE2, affects the nervous system and the behavior of adult zebrafish. We established a range of concentrations (0.05, 0.5, 5, 50, and 75 ng.L^-1), in addition to the control, to evaluate the effect of this compound and its bioaccumulation in zebrafish tissues. Here we show that EE2 bioaccumulates in fish and can change its behavior with an increased time in the upper zone (novel tank test) and far from the shoal segment (social preference test), demonstrating a clear anxiolytic pattern. The anxiolytic effect of EE2 can be harmful as it can affect the stress response of the species. The results presented herein reinforce the idea that the presence of EE2 in environmental water can be dangerous for non-target animals.

Ornamental plants adapted to urban ecosystem pollution: lawn grasses tolerating deicing reagents

Deicing reagents are priority soil pollutants in urban ecosystems. Sodium chloride is one of the priority deicing reagents. Sodium chloride is limiting the spread of lawn grass. We first showed the possibility of using environmental biotechnology in urban greening to obtain lawn grasses tolerant of sodium chloride. We have developed a cell selection technology to obtain salt-tolerant lawn grasses. A cell selection scheme with 1% sodium chloride was used. Most of the tested regenerants were more tolerant to NaCl than original plants. The descendants of the studied regenerants demonstrated the preservation of salt resistance. Most of the descendants of the regenerants Agrostis stolonifera retained high decorative qualities under salinity conditions. The tolerance remained in the next five generations. The descendants of the most salt-tolerant clones Agrostis stolonifera demonstrated resistance to 1% sodium chloride concentration in soil. These plants can serve as the basis for the creation of new salt-tolerant varieties.

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in aquaculture effluent: Insight into breeding and rearing activities, alarming impacts, regulations, performance of wastewater treatment unit and future approaches

The contamination of aquaculture products and effluents by contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from the direct chemical use in aquaculture activities or surrounding industries is currently an issue of increasing concern as these CECs exert acute and chronic effects on living organisms. CECs have been detected in aquaculture water, sediment, and culture species, and antibiotics, antifoulants, and disinfectants are the commonly detected groups. Through accumulation, CECs can reside in the tissue of aquaculture products and eventually consumed by humans. Currently, effluents containing CECs are discharged to the surrounding environment while producing sediments that eventually contaminate rivers as receiving bodies. The rearing (grow-out) stages of aquaculture activities are issues regarding CECs-contamination in aquaculture covering water, sediment, and aquaculture products. Proper regulations should be imposed on all aquaculturists to control chemical usage and ensure compliance to guidelines for appropriate effluent treatment. Several techniques for treating aquaculture effluents contaminated by CECs have been explored, including adsorption, wetland construction, photocatalysis, filtration, sludge activation, and sedimentation. The challenges imposed by CECs on aquaculture activities are discussed for the purpose of obtaining insights into current issues and providing future approaches for resolving associated problems. Stakeholders, such as researchers focusing on environment and aquaculture, are expected to benefit from the presented results in this article. In addition, the results may be useful in establishing aquaculture-related CECs regulations, assessing toxicity to living biota, and preventing pollution.
