Abstract
In conventional elastomer-toughened PLA blends, the huge sacrifice in strength and modulus due to poor compatibility is a major problem plaguing such materials. In this work, oxide-epoxy-graphene (SGO-GMA) nanoparticles that can chemically react with both components of PLA/PBAT blends are prepared to serve as compatibilizer by "thiol-ene click" reaction. It is found that SGO-GMA tends to be dispersed in the PBAT phase thermodynamically. However, the one-step process, SGO-GMA is dispersed in both PBAT and PLA phases because of the chemical reaction limiting its migration, and the crystallization rate of the PLA phase is significantly increased. In contrast, in the two-step process, SGO-GMA is anchored at the interface by the in-situ reaction between epoxy groups in GMA with PLA and PBAT. Consequently, the mechanical properties of the samples prepared using a two-step process demonstrate a significant advantage. Specifically, incorporating 1 wt% SGO-GMA into PLA/PBAT blends results in simultaneous enhancements in tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength by 7.9%, 40.7%, and 57.1%, respectively. The improved mechanical properties that based on the roles functionalized GO compatibilization are expected to facilitate the application of PLA in tissue engineering materials, in vivo and in vitro medical devices and other fields.

Abstract
The environmental crisis was brought on by composites made of synthetic materials that are not biodegradable. Eco-friendly replacement materials for non-biodegradable composites is biodegradable composites. The poisonous remnants are avoided because of how the environment breaks them down. Biodegradable polymers are quickly broken down by bacterial breakdown. Smart packaging has been created to enable consumers to comprehend food conditions in real-time due to the growth of new technologies and consumer desire for wholesome and safe foods. This review highlights and discusses the development, type, and direction of research progress of chitosan research in the application of smart packaging, using bibliometric analysis with time intervals from 2006 to 2023. In 2006, this research began to be developed with India, China, the United States, Iran, and Egypt as the five most influential countries. From the results of keyword analysis, it was found that in addition to studying the general characteristics of smart packaging, there are currently many developments related to smart packaging materials and the effect of adding other materials to the film. The keyword analysis also revealed the current trends and future directions of chitosan research in smart packaging applications, providing valuable insights for researchers and professionals.

Abstract
The extensive use of traditional non-biodegradable plastics results in the generation of microplastics (MPs), forming a new pollutant that can pose significant environmental risks. Biodegradable plastics (BP) possess degradation properties and can partially replace conventional plastics, thereby reducing pollution. However, further investigation is needed into the toxicity of biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) on aquatic organisms. This study explores the toxic effects of PBAT microplastics (PBAT-BMPs) and microplastics produced from degradable PBAT/TPS (thermoplastic starch) composite film (PBAT/TPS-BMPs) on zebrafish embryos. Our findings indicate that the presence of microplastics on the embryo's surface increases with higher BMPs concentration. Nonetheless, PBAT-BMPs tend to aggregate and are blocked by the embryonic membrane, thus diminishing their toxic effects on the embryo. Acute toxicity experiments revealed that 30 mg/L of PBAT-BMPs significantly reduced the survival rate of zebrafish embryos, whereas PBAT/TPS-BMPs had a lesser effect on survival. Both types of BMPs influenced the hatching rate of the embryos, leading to prolonged incubation periods. Additionally, both types of BMPs impacted the locomotor behavior of zebrafish larvae, causing an increase in larval locomotor speed. However, these BMPs had little impact on larval body development and heartbeat behavior. Fluorescent microplastic tracer experiments demonstrated that PBAT-BMPs persisted in juvenile fish for at least 144 h and were difficult to metabolize and excrete. Our study aims to gain a better understanding of the potential effects of BMPs on aquatic ecosystems and biological health, as well as to propose effective strategies for reducing environmental pollution and protecting organisms.

Abstract
Polyethelene terephthalate (PET) is a well-known thermoplastic, and recycling PET waste is important for the natural environment and human health. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the recycling and reuse of PET waste through energy recovery and physical, chemical, and biological recycling. This article summarizes the recycling methods and the high-value products derived from PET waste, specifically detailing the research progress on regenerated PET prepared by the mechanical recycling of fiber/yarn, fabric, and composite materials, and introduces the application of PET nanofibers recycled by physical dissolution and electrospinning in fields such as filtration, adsorption, electronics, and antibacterial materials. This article explains the energy recovery of PET through thermal decomposition and comprehensively discusses various chemical recycling methods, including the reaction mechanisms, catalysts, conversion efficiencies, and reaction products, with a brief introduction to PET biodegradation using hydrolytic enzymes provided. The analysis and comparison of various recycling methods indicated that the mechanical recycling method yielded PET products with a wide range of applications in composite materials. Electrospinning is a highly promising recycling strategy for fabricating recycled PET nanofibers. Compared to other methods, physical recycling has advantages such as low cost, low energy consumption, high value, simple processing, and environmental friendliness, making it the preferred choice for the recycling and high-value utilization of waste PET.

Abstract
Hexavalent chromium is a common pollutant in the environment. Long-term exposure to hexavalent chromium can cause damage to multiple organs. The kidney is one of the main organs that metabolizes heavy metal toxicity, and the accumulation of Cr (VI) in the body can lead to serious damage to kidney function. Studies have shown that ginseng polysaccharides have the function of preventing cisplatin-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress, inflammatory response, and apoptosis in renal cells, but their efficacy and mechanisms against hexavalent chromium-induced nephrotoxicity need to be explored. The aim of this study was to explore the efficacy and mechanism of ginseng polysaccharide against hexavalent chromium-induced nephrotoxicity. The results of pharmacodynamic experiments showed that ginseng polysaccharide could significantly reduce the kidney index, urea nitrogen (BUN), and serum creatinine (Cre) values of K2Cr2O7-treated mice. The results of mechanistic experiments showed that ginseng polysaccharides could alleviate oxidative stress, apoptosis, and biofilm damage in renal tissues caused by Cr (VI). Lipidomic correlation analysis showed that ginseng polysaccharides could protect the organism by regulating the expression of differential lipids. This study opens new avenues for the development of alternative strategies for the prevention of kidney injury caused by hexavalent chromium.

Abstract
Heat-shrinkable films are widely used as disposable secondary packaging but are conventionally made from fossil-based and nonbiodegradable polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene. To lower the environmental impact of such products, this work reports the development of recyclable, biodegradable, and partially biosourced heat-shrinkable biocomposites that are cost-competitive with existing shrink wraps. Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate), a growing biodegradable thermoplastic, was simultaneously reinforced with pulp fibers and partially cross-linked in a single-step reactive melt processing. The designed peroxide-initiated reaction led to a 55 wt % cocontinuous insoluble gel incorporating all the pulp fibers into a cross-linked polymer network. In the solid state, the cross-linked biocomposite shows 60% elongation at break with a 200% increase in Young's modulus, while the only addition of pulp fibers stiffens and embrittles the matrix. Creep tests in the melt state indicated that the cross-linked network induces homogeneous shrinking even during the loading phase, demonstrating the potential use of the biocomposites as heat-shrinkable films. The shrinking also promotes the shape-memory of the biocomposite, which retains its dimensions after four cycles. The circularity of the materials was assessed by mechanical recycling and industrial composting, which have proven feasible end-of-life options for heat-shrinkable biocomposites.

Abstract
Conventional nondegradable packaging and mulch films, after reaching the end of their use, become a major source of waste and are primarily disposed of in landfills. Accumulation of non-degradable film residues in the soil leads to diminished soil fertility, reduced crop yield, and can potentially affect humans. Application of degradable films is still limited due to the high cost, poor mechanical, and gas barrier properties of current biobased synthetic polymers. In this respect, natural polysaccharides and proteins can offer potential solutions. Having versatile functional groups, three-dimensional network structures, biodegradability, ease of processing, and the potential for surface modifications make polysaccharides and proteins excellent candidates for quality films. Besides, their low-cost availability as industrial waste/byproducts makes them cost-effective alternatives. This review paper covers the performance properties, cost assessment, and in-depth analysis of macromolecular structures of some natural polysaccharides and proteins-based films that have great potential for packaging and mulch applications. Proper dissolution of biopolymers to improve molecular interactions and entanglement, and establishment of crosslinkages to form an ordered and cohesive polymeric structure can help to obtain films with good properties. Simple aqueous-based film formulation techniques and utilization of waste/byproducts can stimulate the adoption of affordable biobased films on a large-scale.

Abstract
Cardanol (CD) is used as a reactive compatibilizer, and blended with polylactic acid (PLA) and polypropylene carbonate (PPC) resin (70/30(w/w)) to obtain a series of PLA/PPC/CD blends. The systematic study was conducted on the thermal properties, optical properties, rheological properties, mechanical properties, and microscopic morphology of the blend, by varying amounts of CD added to the blends. A detailed explanation and comprehensive analysis of the reaction mechanism between CD and PLA/PPC have been made. The study found that CD acts as a "bridge" between the PLA and PPC, forming the structure of a block copolymer (PLA-b-CD-b-PPC), and the copolymer can greatly improve the compatibility of PLA and PPC. When the amount of CD reaches 8 wt%, only one Tg is observed in the blend, simultaneously, PLA/PPC has already transitioned from a partially compatible system to a completely compatible system. At the same time, the addition of CD does not have any negative impact on the thermal stability of the PLA/PPC blend under processing temperature conditions, and the thermal stability of the PLA/PPC/CD blends can even be improved under extreme conditions. In addition, the addition of CD allows the PLA/PPC/CD blends to maintain a high light transmittance while reducing the opacity of the blend (the light transmittance remains above 92 %, and the opacity is reduced from 37 % to about 24 %), demonstrating excellent optical properties. Moreover, the elongation at break and impact strength of the PLA/PPC/CD blend both show a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of CD amount. When the CD amount varies within the range of 6- 8 wt%, the blends undergoes a brittle-ductile transition, and its toughness is greatly improved while the rigidity can also meet practical needs. When the amount of CD in the system increases to 12 wt%, the toughness of the blend reaches its peak, and its elongation at break and impact strength reach 513.24 % and 9211.5 J/m2 respectively (increased to 2442.84 % and 270.73 % of the PLA/PPC blend). Concurrently, the fracture surface of the blend exhibits large-scale plastic flow in the direction of the applied force, with marked shear yield phenomena, showing obvious characteristics of tough fracture.

Abstract
Acetylated starch shows enhanced thermal stability and moisture resistance, but its compatibilization with other more hydrophilic polysaccharides remains poor or unknown. In this study, the feasibility of thermomechanically compounding organocatalytically acetylated pea starch (APS), produced at two different degrees of substitution with alkanoyl groups (DSacyl, 0.39 and 1.00), with native pea starch (NPS), high (HMP) and low methoxyl (LMP) citrus pectin, and sugar beet pectin (SBP, a naturally acetylated pectin) for developing hot-pressed bioplastics was studied. Generally, APS decreased hydrogen bonding (ATR-FTIR) and crystallinity (XRD) of NPS films at different levels, depending on its DSacyl. The poor compatibility between APS and NPS or HMP was confirmed by ATR-FTIR imaging. Contrariwise, APS with DSacyl 1 was effectively thermomechanically mixed with the acetylated SBP matrix, maintaining homogeneous distribution within it (ATR-FTIR imaging). APS (any DSacyl) significantly increased the visible/UV light opacity of NPS-based films and decreased their water vapor transmission rate (WVTR, by ca. 11 %) and surface water wettability (by ca. 3 times). In comparison to NPS-APS films, pectin-APS showed higher visible/UV light absorption, tensile strength (ca.2.9-4.4 vs ca.2.4 MPa), and Young's modulus (ca.96-116 vs ca.60-70 MPa), with SBP-APS presenting significantly lower water wettability than the rest of the films.

Abstract
Different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) contents on high-toughness polylactic acid (PLA)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blends were prepared by one-step melt blending using multifunctional epoxy oligomers (ADR) as reactive compatibilizer. During reactive blending, the PLA or PBAT chains were grafted onto the CNTs by allowing the carboxyl or hydroxyl groups to react with epoxy groups and form a branched CNTs-based copolymer. The branched copolymer at the interface between PLA and PBAT was dispersed through emulsion to improve the polymer-polymer or polymer-nanoparticle entanglement between the molecular chains. Interfacial adhesion, interface layer stability, and system viscoelasticity and compatibility were improved as indicated by rheological curves and dynamic mechanical analysis. The strength and toughness of the sample were simultaneously improved by the addition of CNTs and ADR. The impact strength reached 35.3 kJ/m2, which was approximately 7 times that of the PLA/PBAT blend, and the tensile strength was also increased from 33.6 MPa to 42.8 MPa. The properties of PLA/PBAT blend synergistically modified by ADR and CNTs were obviously better than those of PLA/PBAT blend modified by ADR or CNTs. The toughening synergistic effect of ADR and CNTs on PLA/PBAT was observed with efficiency reaching 3.05. With the further understanding of the toughening mechanism, the branched CNTs-based copolymers and CNTs clusters induce a synergistic effect, which increased the interfacial adhesion and ability of energy dissipation and stress transmission.

Abstract
Dental caries, periodontal disease, and endodontic disease are major public health concerns worldwide due to their impact on individuals' quality of life. The present problem of dental disorders is the removal of the infection caused by numerous microbes, particularly, bacteria (both aerobes and anaerobes). The most effective method for treating and managing dental diseases appears to be the use of antibiotics or other antimicrobials, which are incorporated in some drug delivery systems. However, due to their insufficient bioavailability, poor availability for gastrointestinal absorption, and pharmacokinetics after administration via the oral route, many pharmaceutical medicines or natural bioactive substances have limited efficacy. During past few decades, a range of polysaccharide-based systems have been widely investigated for dental dug delivery. The polysaccharide-based carrier materials made of chitosan, alginate, dextran, cellulose and other polysaccharides have recently been spotlighted on the recent advancements in preventing, treating and managing dental diseases. The objective of the current review article is to present a brief comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in polysaccharide-based dental drug delivery systems for the delivery of different antimicrobial drugs.

Abstract
Zingiber officinale Roscoe. (ginger) is a widely distributed plant with a long history of cultivation and consumption. Ginger can be used as a spice, condiment, food, nutrition, and as an herb. Significantly, the polysaccharides extracted from ginger show surprising and satisfactory biological activity, which explains the various benefits of ginger on human health, including anti-influenza, anti-colitis, anti-tussive, anti-oxidant, anti-tumor effects. Here, we systematically review the major studies on the extraction and purification of polysaccharides from ginger in recent years, the characterization of their chemical structure, biological activity, and structure-activity relationships, and the applications of ginger polysaccharides in different fields. This article will update and deepen the understanding of ginger polysaccharide and provide a theoretical basis for its further research and application in human health and product development.

Abstract
(1) Background: The extraction parameters can dramatically alter the extraction rate and biological activity of polysaccharides. (2) Methods: Here, an enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) was employed to extract D. officinale polysaccharides (DOPs), and its optimal extraction conditions were established by single-factor and Box-Behnken design (BBD) experiments. Further, on the basis of in vitro antioxidant capacity, the paraquat (PQ)-induced oxidative stress of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) was chosen as a research model to explore the antioxidant activity of DOPs. (3) Results: The results showed that the extraction yield of DOPs reached 48.66% ± 1.04% under the optimal condition. In vitro experiments had shown that DOPs have considerable ABTS+ radical scavenging capacity (EC50 = 7.27 mg/mL), hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity (EC50 = 1.61 mg/mL), and metal chelating power (EC50 = 8.31 mg/mL). Furthermore, in vivo experiments indicated that DOPs (0.25 mg/mL) significantly prolonged the lifespan, increased antioxidant enzyme activity, and upregulated the expression of daf-16 (>5.6-fold), skn-1 (>5.2-fold), and sir-2.1 (>2.3-fold) of C. elegans. (4) Conclusions: DOPs can be efficiently extracted by EAE and are effective in the reduction of oxidative stress levels in C. elegans.

Abstract
Mountain Zizania latifolia is produced at scale in China, and the edible swollen culm is exported to many countries, but little attention has been paid to its functional components. In this work, microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction (MAEE) is used for the first time to extract polysaccharides from mountain Z. latifolia swollen culm (PMZL). MAEE conditions optimized by Box-Behnken design-response surface methodology were as follows: 2.4% cellulase, microwaving for 6.0 min at 607 W, with a liquid-to-solid ratio of 63:1 ml g-1 . Under these conditions, a notably high yield of 60.43% ± 1.12% for PMZL was achieved, which was significantly higher (p < 0.01) than from plain-grown varieties. PMZL are naturally occurring sulfated polysaccharide-protein complexes containing 8.46% ± 0.18% proteins and 7.86% ± 0.73% sulfates. PMZL comprises mannose, glucosamine, rhamnose, glucose, galactose, and arabinose at molar ratios of 3.80:2.68:1.00:17.41:5.12:2.91, with a weight-average molecular weight of 1569,219 Da and a number-average molecular weight of 364,088 Da. The surface morphology of PMZL is composed of tightly packed oval particles, and this kind of promising polysaccharides preferentially scavenges reactive nitrogen species. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Due to global warming, the land available for planting vegetables is likely to expand to higher areas, so greater attention should now be paid to mountain-grown vegetables. This study provides an efficient way to obtain novel polysaccharides from mountain Zizania latifolia using microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction with a remarkably high yield of 60.4%. This promising source of natural carbohydrates has potential uses in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, functional foods, cosmetics, and functional materials industries.

Abstract
Organocatalytic acetylation of pea starch was systematically optimized using tartaric acid as catalyst. The effect of the degree of substitution with alkanoyl (DSacyl) and tartaryl groups (DStar) on thermal and moisture resistivity, and film-forming properties was investigated. Pea starch with DSacyl from 0.03 to 2.8 was successfully developed at more efficient reaction rates than acetylated maize starch. Nevertheless, longer reaction time resulted in granule surface roughness, loss of birefringence, hydrolytic degradation, and a DStar up to 0.5. Solid-state 13C NMR and SEC-MALS-RI suggested that tartaryl groups formed crosslinked di-starch tartrate. Acetylation increased the hydrophobicity, degradation temperature (by ~17 %), and glass transition temperature (by up to ~38 %) of pea starch. The use of organocatalytically-acetylated pea starch with DSacyl ≤ 0.39 generated starch-based biofilms with higher tensile and water barrier properties. Nevertheless, at higher DS, the incompatibility between highly acetylated and native pea starches resulted in a heterogenous/microporous structure that worsened film properties.

Abstract
The use of the halophile microorganism Haloferax mediterranei, able to synthesize poly(hydroxybutyrate-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), is considered as a promising tool for the industrial production of bioplastic through bioprocessing. A consistent supplementation of the growth substrate in carbohydrates and minerals is overall necessary to allow its PHBV production. In this work, wasted bread was used as substrate for bioplastic production by microbial fermentation. Instead of the consistent and expensive minerals supplement required for Hfx. mediterranei DSM1411 growth, microfiltered seawater was added to the wasted bread-derived substrate. The suitable ratio of wasted bread homogenate and seawater, corresponding to 40:60, was selected. The addition of proteases and amylase to the bread homogenate promoted the microbial growth but it did not correspond to the increase of bioplastic production by the microorganism, that reach, under the experimental conditions, 1.53 g/L. An extraction procedure of the PHBV from cells, based on repeated washing with water, followed or not by a purification through ethanol precipitation, was applied instead of the conventional extraction with chloroform. Yield of PHBV obtained using the different extraction methods were 21.6 ± 3.6 (standard extraction/purification procedure with CHCl3:H2O mixture), 24.8 ± 3.0 (water-based extraction), and 19.8 ± 3.3 mg PHAs/g of wasted bread (water-based extraction followed by ethanol purification). Slightly higher hydroxyvalerate content (12.95 vs 10.78%, w/w) was found in PHBV obtained through the water-based extraction compared to the conventional one, moreover, the former was characterized by purity of 100% (w/w). Results demonstrated the suitability of wasted bread, supplemented with seawater, to be used as substrate for bioplastic production through fermentation. Results moreover demonstrated that a solvent-free extraction, exclusively based on osmotic shock, could be used to recover the bioplastic from cells.

Abstract
The high molecular weight and poor solubility of pectin extracted from Premna microphylla Turcz (PEP) limits its application. Therefore, in this paper, the degradation effects of PEP under ultrasound irradiation and the influences of ultrasonic on the PEP processing characteristics were investigated. The results indicated that the Mw of PEP decreased significantly with a narrow distribution after ultrasonic treatment. The degradation kinetics of PEP at different ultrasound intensities were sufficiently described by the 2nd-order kinetics eq. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis suggested that ultrasonic treatment destroyed the ordered structure inside the PEP, resulting in a looser microscopic morphology. Compared with the control, the thermal stability of PEP was significantly boosted after ultrasonic treatment. Rheological analysis illustrated that the sonicated PEP presented lower apparent viscosities than the original PEP. While the elasticity and thermal reversibility of the degraded products was enhanced. Ultrasonic treatment prominently weakened its shear thinning fluid behavior and thixotropy, thus improved its processing quality. Therefore, desirable PEP can be prepared by ultrasonic irradiation. The results can provide a reference for the development and application of PEP.

Abstract
Taking into consideration the items of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), this study reviews application of mechanochemical approaches to the modification of polysaccharides. The ability to avoid toxic solvents, initiators, or catalysts during processes is an important characteristic of the considered approach and is in line with current trends in the world. The mechanisms of chemical transformations in solid reactive systems during mechanical activation, the structure and physicochemical properties of the obtained products, their ability to dissolve and swell in different media, to form films and fibers, to self-organize in solution and stabilize nanodispersed inorganic particles and biologically active substances are considered using a number of polysaccharides and their derivatives as examples.

Abstract
Food packaging was not as important in the past as it is now, because the world has more people but fewer food resources. Food packaging will become more prevalent and go from being a nice-to-have to an essential feature of modern life. Food packaging has grown to be an important industry sector in today's world of more people and more food. Food packaging innovation faces significant challenges in extending perishable food products' shelf life and contributing to meeting daily nutrient requirements as people nowadays are searching for foods that offer additional health advantages. Modern food preservation techniques have two objectives: process viability and safe, environmentally friendly end products. Long-term storage techniques can include the use of edible coatings and films. This article gives a succinct overview of the supplies and procedures used to coat food products with conventional packaging films and coatings. The key findings summarizing the biodegradable packaging materials are emphasized for their ability to prolong the freshness and flavor of a wide range of food items; films and edible coatings are highlighted as viable alternatives to traditional packaging methods. We discuss the safety concerns and opportunities presented by applying edible films and coatings, allowing it to be used as quality indicators for time-sensitive foods.

Abstract
Sunflower oilcake flour (SFOC) resulting from the cold extraction of oil is a rich source of valuable bio-components that stimulated the development of novel, biodegradable and edible films. The films were prepared by incorporating different concentration of sunflower oilcakes (0.1-0.5 g). The obtained films were characterized in terms of physical, water-affinity, antimicrobial and morphological properties. The edible-film properties were affected significantly by the presence and the level of SFOC added. The water vapor permeability and water vapor transmission rate improved with the amount of SFOC added. However, the solubility, oxygen and grease barrier were slightly lower than control film. SEM analysis revealed a rougher but continuous structure with the increases in sunflower oilcake. Moreover, the films with different SFOC levels were opaque, thus presenting good protection against UV radiation. Overall, the SFOC can be use as raw material to produce edible films with suitable properties and microbiological stability for food-packaging applications.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are natural polymers widely present in animals, plants, and several microorganisms. Polysaccharides have remarkable properties, including easy extractions, degradability, and renewability, and have no apparent toxicity, making them ideal for biomedical applications. Moreover, polysaccharides are suitable for repairing oral tissue defects and treating oral diseases due to their excellent biocompatibility, biosafety, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. The oral cavity is a relatively complex environment vulnerable to numerous conditions, including soft tissue diseases, hard tissue disorders, and as well as soft and hard tissue diseases, all of which are complex to treat. In this article, we reviewed different structures of natural polysaccharides with high commercial values and their applications in treating various oral disease, such as drug delivery, tissue regeneration, material modification, and tissue repair.

Abstract
A novel method of simultaneous extraction and separation of diverse polysaccharides from Purple-heart Radish was developed by integrating EAE with MAATPE. The effects of different enzymes, the ATPS composition, extraction temperature, time etc. were investigated by single-factor experiments and RSM. Under the optimum conditions, the extraction yields of PTP, PBP and total polysaccharides were 9.107 ± 0.391%, 32.506 ± 0.046% and 41.613 ± 0.437%, respectively. By means of HPGPC and PMP-HPLC, Mw of PTP and Mw of PBP were 15935 Da and 27962 Da, respectively. PTP and PBP were mainly composed of mannose, glucuronic acid, aminogalactose, glucose, galactose and arabinose. Moreover, both polysaccharides exhibited stronger antioxidant activities for scavenging multiple radicals and anti-lipid peroxidation. Compared to the conventional extraction methods, EAE-MAATPE achieved higher extraction efficiency due to the synergistic effect between EAE and MAATPE leading to rupture and enzymolysis of cell. Thus, EAE-MAATPE provided an efficient alternative to simultaneous extraction of different polysaccharides from natural products.

Abstract
In this review, a historical perspective, functional and application trends of natural polymers used to the development of edible food packaging were presented and discussed. Polysaccharides and proteins, i.e., alginate; carrageenan; chitosan; starch; pea protein, were considered. These natural polymers are important materials obtained from renewable plant, algae and animal sources, as well as from agroindustrial residues. Historically, some of them have been widely used by ancient populations for food packaging until these were replaced by petroleum-based plastic materials after World War II. Nowadays, biobased materials for food packaging have attracted attention. Their use was boosted especially because of the environmental pollution caused by inappropriate disposal of plastic packaging. Biobased materials are welcome to the design of food packaging because they possess many advantages, such as biodegradability, biocompatibility and low toxicity. Depending on the formulation, certain biopolymer-based packaging may present good barrier properties, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities Thus, polysaccharides and proteins can be combined to form diverse composite films with improved mechanical and biological behaviors, making them suitable for packaging of different food products.

Abstract
This study reports a strategy for developing a biohybrid complex based on a natural/synthetic polymer conjugate as a gel-type structure. Coupling synthetic polymers with natural compounds represents an important approach to generating gels with superior properties and with potential for biomedical applications. The study presents the preparation of hybrid gels with tunable characteristics by using a spiroacetal polymer and alginate as co-partners in different ratios. The new network formation was tested, and the structure was confirmed by FTIR and SEM techniques. The physical properties of the new gels, namely their thermal stability and swelling behavior, were investigated. The study showed that the increase in alginate content caused a smooth increase in thermal stability due to the additional crosslinking bridges that appeared. Moreover, increasing the content of the synthetic polymer in the structure of the gel network ensures a slower release of carvacrol, the encapsulated bioactive compound.

Abstract
A biodegradable thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) blend is developed by blending poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and natural rubber (NR) or epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and it is a sustainable substitution in recent years for synthetic polymers. PLA is high in mechanical strength and compostable, but it is highly stiff and brittle. The incorporation of NR or ENR to PLA increases the impact strength and toughness of PLA. However, the disparity in polarity between PLA and elastomer phase like NR and ENR results in TPE blend being incompatible. Hence, compatibilization is essential to improve its polarity and develop interactions. Compatibilizer that composed of two different polymer is known is graft compatibilizer with the aid of grafting agent. The graft compatibilizers are divided into two categories. The first type is made up of one polymer and grafting agent and, the other one is composed of two polymer groups and grafting agent. These two types of graft compatibilizer can be prepared via two different method such as direct melt blending and solution. Apart from this, the TPE blend is produced via the melt blending technique with mixing machines such as internal mixer and extruder. This article has reviewed the preparation of the graft compatibilizer and blending technique of TPE. Based on the findings, the graft compatibilizers has a significant role in improving miscibility and compatibility across blend composed of different phase.

Abstract
Packaging is used to protect foods from environmental influences and microbial contamination to maintain the quality and safety of commercial food products, to avoid their spoilage and to extend their shelf life. In this respect, bioactive packaging is developing to additionally provides antibacterial and antioxidant activity with the same goals i.e., extending the shelf life while ensuring safety of the food products. New solutions are designed using natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents such as essential oils, some polysaccharides, natural inorganic nanoparticles (nanoclays, oxides, metals as silver) incorporated/encapsulated into appropriate carriers in order to be used in food packaging. Electrospinning/electrospraying are receiving attention as encapsulation methods due to their cost-effectiveness, versatility and scalability. The electrospun nanofibers and electro-sprayed nanoparticles can preserve the functionality and protect the encapsulated bioactive compounds (BC). In this review are summarized recent results regarding applications of nanostructured suitable materials containing essential oils for food safety.

Abstract
Xylan is one of the most abundant, natural polysaccharides, and much recent interest focuses on upgrading heteroxylan to make use of its unique structures and chemistries. Significant progress has been made in the discovery and application of novel enzymes for debranching and modifying heteroxylans. Debranching enzymes include acetylxylan esterases, α-l-arabinofuranosidases and α-dglucuronidases that release side groups from the xylan backbone to recover both biochemicals and less substituted xylans for polymer applications in food packaging or drug delivery systems. Besides esterases and hydrolases, many oxidoreductases including carbohydrate oxidases, lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases, laccases and peroxidases have been also applied to alter different types of xylans for improved physical and chemical properties. This review will highlight the recent discovery and application of enzymes for upgrading xylans for use as added-value chemicals and in functional polymers.

Abstract
The presented study focuses on the development of flax fiber (FF) reinforced composites prepared with the use of poly(lactic acid)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)-PLA/PBAT blend system. This type of modification was aimed to increase impact properties of PLA-based composites, which are usually characterized by high brittleness. The PLA/PBAT blends preparation was carried out using melt blending technique, while part of the samples was prepared by reactive extrusion process with the addition of chain extender (CE) in the form of epoxy-functionalized oligomer. The properties of unreinforced blends was evaluated using injection molded samples. The composite samples were prepared by compression molding technique, while flax fibers reinforcement was in the form of plain fabric. The properties of the laminated sheets were investigated during mechanical test measurements (tensile, flexural, impact). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis was used to determine the thermal properties, while dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and heat deflection temperature (HDT) measurements were conducted in order to measure the thermomechanical properties. Research procedure was supplemented with structure evaluation using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The comparative study reveals that the properties of PLA/PBAT-based composites were more favorable, especially in the context of impact resistance improvement. However, for CE modified samples also the modulus and strength was improved. Structural observations after the impact tests confirmed the presence of the plastic deformation of PLA/PBAT matrix, which confirmed the favorable properties of the developed materials. The use of PBAT phase as the impact modifier strongly reduced the PLA brittleness, while the reactive extrusion process improves the fiber-matrix interactions leading to higher stiffness and strength.

Abstract
Starch based materials are attractive bio-based alternative to fully synthetic polymers. Native starch has however limited thermoprocessability and properties and must be modified. In order to improve the properties of starch-graft-poly(butyl-acrylate-co-styrene) copolymers via a process as green as possible, we report herein a new method for the dual functionalization of the polysaccharide via a one pot one step reaction in aqueous medium combining free radical polymerizations and ring-opening chemistry. Poly(butyl acrylate) or poly(butyl acrylate-co-styrene) (ca. 60 000 g/mol) and oligo(ε-caprolactone) were grafted on starch with a grafting percentage up to 75 %. The copolymers show two glass transition temperatures: one around 55-60 °C related to starch and a second attributed to the grafted vinyl polymers, from -46 °C to 20 °C depending on butyl acrylate/styrene ratio. The resulting dual functionalized materials exhibit excellent mechanical properties, with elongation at break in the range 20-210 %, while single functionalized starch shows less than 5 %.

Abstract
Regeneration of neurites network constitutes a neurotrophic and therapeutic strategy for Parkinson's disease (PD). Increasing evidence is supporting the potential application of natural polysaccharides in prevention or treatment of PD. In this study, an acidic heteropolysaccharide LFP-1 was isolated from Lycii fructus, and purified by ion-exchange and gel filtration chromatography. Structural features of LFP-1 were analyzed with molecular weight (MW) distribution, monosaccharide composition, methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. LFP-1 was a complicated structured polysaccharide with an average MW of 1.78 × 104 Da and composed of highly branched arabinogalactans, homogalacturonan and rhamnogalacturonan moieties. LFP-1 promoted neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth in vitro in PC12 cell models. Furthermore, LFP-1 had a significantly protective effect against 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridiniumion (MPP+)-induced neurotoxicity in PD model PC12 cells. These observations unambiguously indicated the neurotrophic and neuroprotective activities of LFP-1, which may be developed for prevention or treatment of neurodegeneration in PD.

Considering
the current context of research aiming at proposing
new bioplastics with low costs and properties similar to fossil-based
commodities currently on the market, in the present work, a hybrid
blend containing a prevalent amount of cheap inedible cereal flour
(70 wt %) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) (30 wt %) has been prepared
by a simple, eco-friendly, and low-cost processing methodology. In
order to improve the interfacial tension and enhance the adhesion
between the different phases at the solid state, with consequent improvement
in microstructure uniformity and in material mechanical and adhesive
performance, the PBS fraction in the blend was replaced with variable
amounts (0–25 wt %) of PBS-based green copolymer, which exerted
the function of a compatibilizer. The copolymer is characterized by
an ad hoc chemical structure, containing six-carbon aliphatic rings,
also present in the flour starch structure. The two synthetic polyesters
obtained through two-stage melt polycondensation have been deeply
characterized from the molecular, thermal, and mechanical points of
view. Copolymerization deeply impacts the polymer final properties,
the crystallizing ability, and stiffness of the PBS homopolymer being
reduced. Also, the prepared ternary blends were deeply investigated
in terms of microstructure, thermal, and mechanical properties. Lastly,
both pure blend components and ternary blends were subjected to disintegration
experiments under composting conditions. The results obtained proved
how effective was the compatibilizer action of the copolymer, as evidenced
by the investigation conducted on morphology and mechanical properties.
Specifically, the mixtures with 15 and 20 wt % Co appeared to be characterized
by the best mechanical performance, showing a progressive increase
of deformation while preserving good values of elastic modulus and
stress. The disintegration rate in compost was found to be higher
for the lower amount of copolymer in the ternary blend. However, after
90 days of incubation, the blend richest in copolymer content lost
62% of weight.

Abstract
Environmental temperature and pH induced significant changes in the size and surface charge (ζ) of octenylsuccinated oat β-glucan aggregates. The underlying mechanisms were explored by using 1H-NMR, fluorescence spectra, thermodynamic analysis, and SAXS. At pH 6.5, the size decreased with temperature while ζ continuously increased. With increasing pH at 293 K, parabolic and U-shaped trends were observed in the size and ζ, peaking at pH 8.5 and 6.5, respectively. At any tested pH, the size decreased with temperature. Overall, ζ significantly increased with temperature at each pH. As temperature increased, the compactness of hydrophobic-domains increased while the compactness of hydrophilic-domains decreased. In an acidic environment, both the compactness increased with decreasing pH, but in an alkaline environment, they decreased with pH. The compactness changes were co-driven by enthalpy and entropy and corresponded to changes in the hydrophobic interactions in hydrophobic-domains, hydrogen bonds in hydrophilic-domains and electrostatic repulsions among octenylsuccinate molecules.

Abstract
Biopolymers are materials synthesised or derived from natural sources, such as plants, animals, microorganisms or any other living organism. The use of these polymers has grown significantly in recent years as industry shifts away from unsustainable fossil fuel resources and looks towards a softer and more sustainable environmental approach. This review article covers the main classes of biopolymers: Polysaccharides, proteins, microbial-derived and lignin. In addition, an overview of the leading biomedical applications of biopolymers is also provided, which includes tissue engineering, medical implants, wound dressings, and the delivery of bioactive molecules. The future clinical applications of biopolymers are vast, due to their inherent biocompatibility, biodegradability and low immunogenicity. All properties which their synthetic counterparts do not share.
