Sustainable food packaging: Harnessing biowaste of Terminalia catappa L. for chitosan-based biodegradable active films for shrimp storage

Shrimp, a globally consumed perishable food, faces rapid deterioration during storage and marketing, causing nutritional and economic losses. With a rising environmental consciousness regarding conventional plastic packaging, consumers seek sustainable options. Utilizing natural waste resources for packaging films strengthens the food industry. In this context, we aim to create chitosan-based active films by incorporating Terminalia catappa L. leaves extract (TCE) to enhance barrier properties and extend shrimp shelf life under refrigeration. Incorporation of TCE improves mechanical, microstructural, UV, and moisture barrier properties of the chitosan film due to cross-linking interactions, resulting in robust, foldable packaging film. Active TCE film exhibits high antioxidant property due to polyphenols. These films also exhibited low wettability and showed hydrophobicity than neat CH films which is essential for meat packaging. These biodegradable films offer an eco-friendly end-of-life option when buried in soil. TCE-loaded films effectively control spoilage organisms, prevent biochemical spoilage, and maintain shrimp freshness compared to neat CH films during refrigerated condition. The active TCE film retains sensory attributes better than neat chitosan, aligning with consumer preference. The developed edible and active film from waste sources might offer sustainable, alternative packaging material with a lower carbon footprint than petroleum-based sources.

Prolonging the shelf life of fresh-cut guava (Psidium guajaya L.) by coating with chitosan and cinnamon essential oil

This study investigated the effect of a coating of chitosan (CH) and cinnamon essential oil (CEO; 0-1 %) on the quality attributes of fresh-cut guava (Psidium guajaya L.) during storage at 4 ± 1 °C for 17 days, with uncoated fresh-cut guava used as control. The CH coating significantly (p < 0.05) delayed changes in weight loss, firmness, colour, total soluble solids and titratable acidity compared to the control sample. Furthermore, the effects were more prominent with the incorporation of higher CEO concentrations. The bacterial, yeast and mould counts were also significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the CH-coated samples than in the control, with the coating containing 1 % CEO exhibiting the best quality preservation effect. In addition, CH and CEO coatings extended the shelf life of fresh-cut guava up to 17 days compared to the control sample (shelf life of only 3 days). In conclusion, combining CH and CEO as a coating matrix effectively preserves the quality and enhances fresh-cut guava's shelf life.

Development and characterization of antioxidant bilayer film based on poly lactic acid-bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia) seed protein incorporated with Pistacia terebinthus extract for active food packaging

This study focuses on designing an active bilayer food package film based on polylactic acid (PLA) and bitter vetch seed protein incorporated with Pistacia terebinthus extract (PTE). The effect of PTE on the physicochemical, barrier, structural, mechanical, and antioxidant properties of the active film was determined. Moisture content, water solubility, and water vapor permeability (WVP) of the active films indicated that the addition of PTE increased its suitability for food packaging. FE-SEM micrographs illustrated that the resulting films had a smooth and dense surface, describing a continuous network of protein molecules within the film structure. FTIR analysis displayed the physical interaction between PTE and the film polymer. XRD revealed an increase in the crystallinity of the active films. The resulting active film had a low migration rate (<7%) of phenolic compounds into fatty food simulant. Notably, the addition of PTE significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased the tensile strength and Young's modulus (from 15.13 and 315.98 MPa to 14.07 and 254.07 MPa, respectively). Concurrently, there was an increase in the elongation at break of the active films (from 23.19 to 75.60%), indicating higher flexibility compared to control films. Additionally, the incorporation of PTE improved the thermal properties of active films. The antioxidant capacity of the designed films was measured based on their DPPH radical scavenging activity, revealing that the antioxidant capacity of the control film increased from 44.65% to 59.72% in the active film containing 15% PTE. In conclusion, the prepared bilayer film can effectively be used as an active food package for sensitive foods to oxidation.

A novel film based on gluten, pectin, and polyphenols and its potential application in high-fat food

BACKGROUND

A novel film based on some natural ingredients (wheat gluten, pectin, and polyphenols) was used to improve the quality and storage stability of high-fat food due to their good sustainable, mechanical, and edible properties.

RESULTS

With the addition of polyphenols from Cedrus deodara (in the form of pine-needle extract (PNE)), the physicochemical properties (thickness, moisture content, and color), mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation), barrier properties (water vapor, oil, and oxygen permeability, transmittance), and thermal stability of the composite film were improved. According to the analysis of infrared spectroscopy and molecular docking, the main compounds of PNE interacted with wheat gluten by hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic forces to form a compact and stable structure. In addition, the composite film showed a remarkable antioxidant capability to scavenge free radicals, and the film matrix could effectively protect the antioxidant activity of PNE. Furthermore, using cured meat as a model, the composite film exhibited a fine packaging performance in high-fat food during storage, which could obviously inhibit the excessive oxidation of fat and protein of cured meat and was beneficial in forming its special flavor.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that the composite film possessed good properties and had potential for packing of high-fat foods, which could improve the quality and safety of food during processing and storage. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Preparation and characterization of ultrasound-assisted essential oil-loaded nanoemulsions stimulated pullulan-based bioactive film for strawberry fruit preservation

Ultrasound is a high-energy approach that can help with homogenization and dispersion in cavitation. In this study, nanoemulsions of curcumin and orange essential oil were prepared with ultrasound treatment at different times. The ultrasound-treated nanoemulsions for 10 min exhibited the smallest droplet size, the best storage, and higher thermal stability. The pullulan-based film with ultrasound-assisted nanoemulsions exhibited improved water vapor permeability and moisture content and the highest tensile strength and elongation at break. The structural analysis showed that ultrasonic treatment enhanced the H-bond, resulting in a more orderly molecular arrangement and intermolecular compatibility. Furthermore, the bioactive film had the maximum oil retention time. It possessed excellent bacteriostatic properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus due to the smallest oil droplets and uniform distribution in the film matrix. Besides, the weight loss and deterioration of the strawberry fruit were effectively reduced, thus prolonging the shelf life.

Preparation and characterization of carboxymethyl chitosan/pullulan composite film incorporated with eugenol and its application in the preservation of chilled meat

To solve the problem of easy spoilage of chilled meat during storage, we fabricated a novel composite film using carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/pullulan (Pul)/eugenol (E) by casting method. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the films were better when the CMCS/Pul ratio was 2.5/2.5. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that intermolecular hydrogen bonds were formed among E, CMCS, and Pul, which was consistent with the rheological test results. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images showed that eugenol was well dispersed in the CMCS/Pul matrix. The addition of eugenol significantly increased the antibacterial properties and antioxidant properties. Moreover, when 5% eugenol was added, the water vapor permeability (WVP) of the film reduced to 2.41 × 10^-11 g/m·s·Pa. Finally, the freshness of the chilled meat wrapped with the eugenol-containing composite film was prolonged, thereby offering a potential alternative to synthetic materials.

Turmeric carbon quantum dots enhanced chitosan nanocomposite films based on photodynamic inactivation technology for antibacterial food packaging

The increased demand for food quality and safety has led the food industry to pay urgent attention to new packaging materials with antimicrobial activity. In this study, we combined photodynamic inactivation of bactericidal technology in food packaging materials by incorporating fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CDs) prepared from the natural plant turmeric into a chitosan matrix to prepare a series of active composite food packaging films (CDs-CS). The chitosan film containing CDs had better mechanical properties, UV protection and hydrophobicity. Under irradiation with a 405 nm light source, the composite film was able to produce abundant reactive oxygen species, and the CDs-CS₂ film exhibited reductions of approximately 3.19 and 2.05 Log₁₀ CFU/mL for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli respectively within 40 min. In cold pork storage applications, CDs-CS₂ films showed inhibition of the growth of colonization in pork and retarded the spoilage of pork within 10 days. This work will provide new insights to explore safe and efficient antimicrobial food packaging.

Copaiba essential oil loaded-nanocapsules film as a potential candidate for treating skin disorders: preparation, characterization, and antibacterial properties

Infections have emerged as a novel target in managing skin and mucosa diseases. Bacterial resistance to antimicrobials and biofilm elimination from surfaces remains a challenge. Because polymeric nanocapsules (NC) can increase antimicrobial activity, this study aimed to produce and characterize NC into chitosan films (CSF). Copaiba essential oil (CO) presents antimicrobial activity and was chosen to load NC. In addition, the antibacterial activity was evaluated to obtain a new biodegradable polymeric platform system with the potential to treat topical diseases associated with bacterial infections. The CO-NC produced by nanoprecipitation presented particle size lower than 250 nm, negative charge, and encapsulation efficiency higher than 70 %. Direct incorporation of CO into CSF (CO-CSF) by casting method worsened the film's characteristics. However, incorporating CO-NC into CSF (CO-NC-CSF) avoided these drawbacks demonstrating improved physical, mechanical, morphological, and topographical properties. FTIR results demonstrated possible intermolecular interactions among the polymers and CO. The CO-NC-CSF and CO-CSF presented antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, especially the formulation containing 1 % of CO. These results indicated that CO-NC-CSF is a promising candidate for treating skin disorders.

Characterization and antioxidant properties of chitosan/ethyl-vanillin edible films produced via Schiff-base reaction

In this paper, chitosan/ethyl-vanillin (CS-EV) Schiff-base edible films with CS and EV at different concentrations and ratios were successfully prepared. The optical barrier properties, water contact angle, mechanical performance, water vapor transmission, antioxidant properties, thermal properties, and morphological structure of the films were compared. The results suggested that the tensile strength (TS) attained a maximum value of 64.63 MPa at a concentration of 4% EV. Moreover, water diffusion was prevented through the compact structure of the CS-EV edible film. Additionally, the two sides of the CS-EV film show different textures due to their different hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity. In particular, the films of CS possessed superior thermal stability, while those of CS-EV exhibited higher antioxidant activity.

Ultrasound-assisted development and characterization of novel polyphenol-loaded pullulan/trehalose composite films for fruit preservation

A novel food packaging film was developed by incorporating a tea polyphenols-loaded pullulan/trehalose (TP@Pul/Tre) into a composite film with ultrasound-assisted treatment of dual-frequency (20/35 kHz, 40 W/L) for 15 min to assess the physicochemical and mechanical properties of a composite film. The optimized ultrasound-assisted significantly increases elongation at break, tensile strength, and improves the composite film's UV/water/oxygen barrier properties. Structure analysis using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction and thermal stability revealed that these improvements were achieved through ultrasound-enhanced H-bonds, more ordered molecular arrangements, and good intermolecular compatibility. Besides, the ultrasound-assisted TP@Pul/Tre film has proven to have good antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with approximately 100 % lethality at 4 h and 8 h, respectively. Moreover, the ultrasound-assisted TP@Pul/Tre film effectively delayed moisture loss, oxidative browning, decay, and deterioration in fresh-cut apples and pears, thereby extending their shelf life. Thus, ultrasound has proved to be an effective tool for improving the quality of food packaging films, with a wide range of applications.

Fabrication and characterization of pullulan-based composite films incorporated with bacterial cellulose and ferulic acid

Pullulan-based composite films incorporated with bacterial cellulose (BC) and ferulic acid (FA) were prepared by solution casting method. The rheological, morphological, barrier, optical, anti-fogging, and antioxidant properties of pullulan-based composite films doped with BC and FA were investigated. The rheological results showed that all film-forming solution was pseudoplastic fluid and its viscosity increased with the increase of BC content. An appropriate BC (2 %) and FA were uniformly dispersed in pullulan to form uniform and dense composite films. With the increase of BC content, the roughness and opacity of composite films increased while their UV-vis barrier performance was improved by incorporating BC and FA. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer analysis demonstrated that hydrogen bond interactions among pullulan, BC, and FA were found, and incorporating BC could increase the crystallinity of the composite films, thus enhancing their mechanical, barrier, hydrophobic, and thermal stability properties. Pullulan-based composite films incorporated with 2 % BC and FA (P-BC2-FA) showed better mechanical properties, water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide barrier performances, and its water contact angle value also increased compared with control, respectively. P-BC2-FA film showed superior anti-fogging and antioxidant activities. These results indicate that the P-BC2-FA film are expected to be a potential target of bioactive packaging.

Bio-based antibacterial food packaging films and coatings containing cinnamaldehyde: A review

As a typical bioactive compound from the bark and leaves of the trees of the genus Cinnamomum, cinnamaldehyde (CIN) is natural and safe. Its excellent antibacterial activity against various foodborne microorganisms is growingly regarded as a promising additive for improving and enhancing the properties of bio-based packaging films/coatings. This review systematically summarized the bio-based food packaging films/coatings containing CIN developed recently. The effects of CIN incorporation on physical and chemical properties of the antibacterial food packaging films/coatings, including thickness, color index, transparency, water content, water solubility, water contact angle, mechanical performances, water barrier performances, and antibacterial performances, were discussed. Simultaneously, this work also concluded that an explanation of the antibacterial mechanism of CIN and preparation methods of bio-based packaging films/coatings containing CIN/CIN carriers. Notably, the incorporation of CIN into the films/coatings could enhance their antibacterial performance extend the shelf-life of various foods, such as fish, meats, vegetables, fruits, and other perishable food, while improving their physical and chemical properties. Although incorporating CIN into food packaging films/coatings has been extensively studied, long-term follow-up research on the human safety of active food packaging films/coatings containing CIN needs to be carried out.

Levan-chitosan blend films: Preparation, structural, physical properties and application in pork packaging

Conventional fossil fuel-based packaging materials often brings of food safety and serious environmental pollution. It is significant to develop an environmentally-friendly packaging material. In this work, a levan-chitosan (LE/CS) blend film was fabricated via the solution casting method. The films were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, indicating the formation of hydrogen bonds between chitosan and levan. The mechanical properties of LE/CS films demonstrated a mechanical strength higher than CS films, and the best tensile strength appeared at a ratio of LE/CS (1:1) up to 18.78 ± 0.73 MPa. The addition of levan caused a significant increase in absorption of UV light with a reduction in swelling water of the blend films from 29.13 ± 0.53 % of chitosan film to 2.07 ± 0.27 % of LE/CS (1:1) film. A higher contact angle and lower WVP were observed for LE/CS blend films. LE/CS blend films were then used as packaging material for fresh pork and were well maintained the qualities. The study suggested that the new blend film might have a good prospect as a food packaging material.

Preparation and characterization of chitosan films incorporating epigallocatechin gallate: Microstructure, physicochemical, and bioactive properties

Novel chitosan films incorporating epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) were prepared and demonstrated the ideal physical and mechanical properties required of candidate food packaging materials alongside desirable antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Compared with traditional chitosan films, chitosan films incorporated with EGCG were thicker, had higher tensile strength and water solubility, and had lower elongation at break, moisture content, degree of swelling, and water contact angles. Although EGCG-containing films were slightly darker in color than pure chitosan films, they exhibited a greater inhibitory effect on light-induced oxidation with obviously improved UV-vis barrier capability and opacity. Scanning electron microscopy results suggested that EGCG-incorporated samples had a rougher surface structure. This was further confirmed by atomic force microscopy and indicated that the addition of EGCG facilitated the formation of protective barriers through the interaction between the film and food surface. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that EGCG interacted with chitosan by intermolecular hydrogen bonding and effectively improved the thermal stability of chitosan films. Notably, the incorporation of EGCG significantly enhanced the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of chitosan films. Hence, chitosan films incorporating EGCG have potential applications in the food industry as a novel active packaging material, especially in preventing food oxidation and spoilage in perishable foods.

Exploration of multifunctional properties of garlic skin derived cellulose nanocrystals and extracts incorporated chitosan biocomposite films for active packaging application

For many years, garlic has been used as a condiment in food and traditional medicine. However, the garlic skin, which accounts for 25% of the garlic bulk, is considered agricultural waste. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and garlic extract (GE) from garlic skin were isolated and used as fillers to manufacture biocomposite films. The films were characterized in terms of UV barrier, thermal, mechanical, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activity. The chitosan-containing films and CNCs have significantly improved the films' tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation but decreased the film transparency compared to chitosan films. The combination of the CNCs and GE, on the other hand, slightly reduced the mechanical properties. The addition of CNCs slightly decreased the film transparency, while the addition of GE significantly improved the UV barrier properties. Thermal studies revealed that the incorporation of CNC and GE had minimal effect on the thermal stability of the chitosan films. The degradability rate of the chitosan composite films was found to be higher than that of the neat chitosan films. The antimicrobial properties of films were studied against Escherichia coli, Streptomyces griseorubens, Streptomyces alboviridis, and Staphylococcus aureus, observing that their growth was considerably inhibited by the addition of GE in composite films. Films incorporating both CNCs and GE from garlic skin hold more promise for active food packaging applications due to a combination of enhanced physical characteristics and antibacterial activity.

Effect of Melissa officinalis L. Essential Oil Nanoemulsions on Structure and Properties of Carboxymethyl Chitosan/Locust Bean Gum Composite Films

This study aimed to develop active films based on carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/locust bean gum (LBG) films containing Melissa officinalis L. essential oil (MOEO) nanoemulsions. The results showed that the active films incorporated with MOEO nanoemulsion resulted in an increase in the elongation of break, water resistance and improved the film hydrophilicity. Elongation of break increased from 18.49% to 27.97% with the addition of 4% MOEO nanoemulsion. Water resistance was decreased from 56.32% to 25.43%, and water contact angle was increased from 75.13 to 83.86 with the addition of 4% MOEO nanoemulsion. However, the water vapor barrier properties and tensile strength decreased with the addition of MOEO nanoemulsions. The scanning electron microscopic images and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that the MOEO was very compatible with the film materials and dispersed evenly in the films. At the same time, the addition of MOEO nanoemulsion significantly enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial activities of C/L-MOEO films. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of C/L-MOEO films were increased from 7.16% to 33.81% and 3.52% to 54.50%, respectively. In general, C/L-MOEO film has great application prospects.

A novel edible packaging film based on chitosan incorporated with persimmon peel extract for the postharvest preservation of banana

This study aimed to develop a novel edible packaging film for the postharvest preservation of banana based on chitosan (CS) and persimmon peel extract (PPE). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed PPE was evenly distributed in the CS matrix and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis showed CS and PPE interacted to form hydrogen bonds, demonstrating good compatibility. Simultaneously, the addition of PPE also significantly improved CS film's physical properties and antioxidant activity. Among them, the CS film containing 10% PPE (CS-PPE 10) showed the optimal mechanical properties, water vapor barrier properties and oxygen barrier properties. The CS film containing 15% PPE (CS-PPE 15) exhibited the best thermal stability, UV-Vis barrier properties and antioxidant activity. In the experiment of banana preservation, CS-PPE 10 film obtained optimal performance on decreasing senescence spots, weight loss, fruit softening, cell wall degradation, inhibiting the activities of polyphenol oxidase and cell wall degrading enzymes and maintaining the content of total soluble sugar and ascorbic acid during the storage period. Consequently, CS-PPE 10 film was expected to be a novel edible packaging material to maintain banana quality and prolong shelf life.

Development and characterization of levan/pullulan/chitosan edible films enriched with ε-polylysine for active food packaging

The levan/pullulan/chitosan edible films, enriched with ε-polylysine, as an antimicrobial agent, were successfully fabricated by the casting method, and their applicability for food packaging was systematically evaluated by several analytical techniques. An increase in the levan/pullulan ratios (ranged from 0:6 to 3:3) in the films showed a decreased water solubility (from 72.21% to 26.64%) and oxygen permeability (from 48.75 × 10^-2 g·mm·m^-2·d^-1·kPa^-1 to 4.45 × 10^-2 g·mm·m^-2·d^-1·kPa^-1), and increased elongation at break (from 10.92% to 46.61%). All the films showed a strong inhibitory effect on two typical food-borne pathogens and good biodegradability in the soil. These films were employed as edible coatings on strawberries, and the storage stability was investigated by means of physical and biochemical parameters. Compared to control, the weight loss, firmness, and total soluble solids of the coated strawberries showed a downward trend. Overall, these findings suggest that the developed edible films could be a potential approach for sustainable active food packaging.

Enhancing the thermostability, UV shielding and antimicrobial activity of transparent chitosan film by carbon quantum dots containing N/P

The chitosan (CS) transparent film has attracted much attention in food and medicine packaging areas due to their biodegradability and good availability. A novel carbon quantum dots compound containing nitrogen and phosphorus (NP-CQDs) was obtained by reacting citric acids, with urea and phytic acids. The density of the film was increased, and the water vapor permeation was reduced by the presence of NP-CQDs. The introduction of 4 wt% NP-CQDs increased the water contact angle of the CS film from 79.2° to 105.8°. The shielding on UV-A and UV-B transmittance was increased with the NP-CQDs loading. The film containing 4 wt% NP-CQDs blocked more than 90.2% UV-A and 96.5% UV-B; however, it only blocked 26.8% visible light. It also exhibited better antibacterial activity to both E. coli and S. aureus than the control CS film. This work provided a feasible way to prepare multifunctional bio-safe film.

Synergistic Effect of Glycyrrhizic Acid and ZnO/Palygorskite on Improving Chitosan-Based Films and Their Potential Application in Wound Healing

The synergistic effect of chitosan (CS), glycyrrhizic acid (GA) and ZnO/palygorskite (ZnO/PAL) as potential wound dressing was evaluated in the form of films by the solution casting method. The nanocomposite films were well-characterized with ATR-FTIR, XRD and SEM to explore the interactions between CS, GA and ZnO/PAL. Physical, mechanical and antibacterial properties of the nanocomposite films were systematically investigated for their reliability in end-up utilization. Importantly, it was found that the presence of PAL in the films provided enhanced mechanical properties, whereas CS, GA and ZnO supplied a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, especially for drug-resistant bacteria such as ESBL-E. coli and MRSA. Overall, this research demonstrated that the prepared films can be a promising candidate for wound-care materials.
