Abstract
With the global emphasis on environmental protection and the proposal of the climate goal of "carbon neutrality," countries around the world are calling for reductions in carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter pollution. These pollutants have severe impacts on human lives and should be effectively controlled. Engine exhaust is the most serious pollution source, and diesel engine is an important contributor to particulate matter. Diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology has proven to be an effective technology for soot control at the present and in the future. Firstly, the exacerbating effect of particulate matter on human infectious disease viruses is discussed. Then, the latest developments in the influence of key factors on DPF performance are reviewed at different observation scales (wall, channel, and entire filter). In addition, current soot catalytic oxidant schemes are presented in the review, and the significance of catalyst activity and soot oxidation kinetic models are highlighted. Finally, the areas that need further research are determined, which has important guiding significance for future research. Current catalytic technologies are focused on stable materials with high mobility of oxidizing substances and low cost. The challenge of DPF optimization design is to accurately calculate the balance between soot and ash load, DPF regeneration control strategy, and exhaust heat management strategy.

Abstract
Recent progress in 3D X-ray microscopy allows the analysis of coated gasoline particulate filters on a detailed pore-scale level. However, derivable detailed three-dimensional models for filter simulation are not applicable under transient driving conditions of automotive aftertreatment systems due to their inherent complexity. Here, we present a novel concept to utilize highly resolved 3D X-ray microscopy scans and their quantitative analysis for a macroscopic model of coated gasoline particulate filters intended to be applied in a driving cycle. A previously developed filtration model build on a 1D + 1D flow model on the channel scale of a filter is utilized. Accompanying measurements conducted on a dynamic engine test bench serve as validation for pressure drop and filtration characteristics. With the determined properties from 3D X-ray microscopy, the macroscopic model successfully replicates the measurements. Regarding the filter coating, the reduced porosity and a decrease of medium sized pores relative to an uncoated substrate reduce the filtration efficiency under steady-state as well as transient conditions.

Abstract
The transient nature of the internal pore structure of particulate wall flow filters, caused by the continuous deposition of particulate matter, makes studying their flow and filtration characteristics challenging. In this article we present a new methodology and first experimental demonstration of time resolved in-situ synchrotron micro X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT) to study aerosol filtration. We directly imaged in 4D (3D plus time) pore scale deposits of TiO2 nanoparticles (nominal mean primary diameter of 25 nm) with a pixel resolution of 1.6 μm. We obtained 3D tomograms at a rate of ∼1 per minute. The combined spatial and temporal resolution allows us to observe pore blocking and filling phenomena as they occur in the filter’s pore space. We quantified the reduction in filter porosity over time, from an initial porosity of 0.60 to a final porosity of 0.56 after 20 min. Furthermore, the penetration depth of particulate deposits and filtration rate was quantified. This novel image-based method offers valuable and statistically relevant insights into how the pore structure and function evolves during particulate filtration. Our data set will allow validation of simulations of automotive wall flow filters. Evolutions of this experimental design have potential for the study of a wide range of dry aerosol filters and could be directly applied to catalysed automotive wall flow filters.
