Adsorption of hydrogen sulfide by iron-based adsorbent derived from fly ash and iron slag

In this article, an innovative sorbent (Fe-FA) is prepared from fly ash; ferrous sulfate-containing waste slag (FSS), which are industrial wastes; and NaOH by a hydrothermal method at 100 °C. As a result, in comparison to several conventional sorbents, such as ZnO, Fe₂O₃, 13X zeolite, and activated carbon, Fe-FA had the best adsorption performance for H₂S adsorption. Fe-FA had not only a higher adsorption capacity (near 150 mg/g) but also a longer breakthrough time (near 400 min) when gas hourly space velocity was 8000 h^-1. Then, characterizations of XRD, BET, NH₃-TPD, FTIR, and XPS analyzed basic properties of Fe-FA and revealed reasons for the excellent adsorption performance. In general, the excellent adsorption performance of Fe-FA for H₂S is mainly due to the high content of iron species (almost 50%) and suitable mesoporous structure in the Fe-FA.

Empowering carbon materials robust gas desulfurization capability through an inclusion of active inorganic phases: A review of recent approaches

Gas-phase desulfurization on carbon materials is an important process attracting the attention of scientists and engineers. When involving physical adsorption, reactive adsorption and catalytic oxidation combined, the process is considered as energy-efficient. Recent developments in materials science directed the attention of researchers to inorganic phases which react with H₂S and participate to its oxidation to elemental sulfur. To fully utilize their capability, a developed surface area is needed and this feature is delivered by carbons. This review presents examples of recent advances in this field with focus not only on the activity of inorganic phases, dispersed on the surface or introduced as nanoparticles, but also on the important contribution of a carbon support as providing specific synergistic effects. The active phase promotes the H₂S oxidation and participates in the reactions with H₂S, while the carbon phase ensures its high dispersion, adds to oxygen activation and to an efficient electron transfer.

On-Line Thermally Induced Evolved Gas Analysis: An Update-Part 1: EGA-MS

Advances in on-line thermally induced evolved gas analysis (OLTI-EGA) have been systematically reported by our group to update their applications in several different fields and to provide useful starting references. The importance of an accurate interpretation of the thermally-induced reaction mechanism which involves the formation of gaseous species is necessary to obtain the characterization of the evolved products. In this review, applications of Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA) performed by on-line coupling heating devices to mass spectrometry (EGA-MS), are reported. Reported references clearly demonstrate that the characterization of the nature of volatile products released by a substance subjected to a controlled temperature program allows us to prove a supposed reaction or composition, either under isothermal or under heating conditions. Selected 2019, 2020, and 2021 references are collected and briefly described in this review.
