JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2024; 471:134457. Abstract
Few reports have focused on using particle electrodes with polar adsorbent properties in heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) system to improve the degradation of hydrophilic organic pollutants (HLOPs). In this study, a hydrophilic electrode Sn-Sb/AS was prepared by supporting metals Sn and Sb on alum sludge (AS), which can effectively degrade 91.68%, 92.54%, 89.62%, and 96.24% of the four types of HLOPs, chlorpyrifos (CPF), atrazine (ATZ), diuron (DIU), and glyphosate (PMG), respectively, within 40 min. The mineralization rates were 82.37%, 78.93%, 73.98%, and 85.65% for CPF, ATZ, DIU, and PMG, respectively. Based on the analysis of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance test, quenching test, and identified anthracene endoperoxide, the degradation at the cathode was attributed to non-radical oxidation via interaction with 1O2. In contrast, the anodic oxidation occurred via direct electron transfer at the anode and/or oxidation via interaction with adsorbed •OH (•OHads) around the particle electrodes. Furthermore, the reaction sites were calculated by Density functional theory (DFT) and Fukui function, corresponding to the electrophilic attack (fA-) of 1O2 and anodic direct oxidation, besides, the radical attack (fA0) of •OH(ads). Herein, this study proposes a targeted elimination strategy for HLOPs in wastewater treatment using particle electrodes with polar adsorbent properties in EF system.

Abstract
SnS2 nanosheets combined with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were made into sponge electrodes which were used for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) in dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) system. The amounts of formate and formaldehyde produced by CO2 reduction with SnS2/MWNTs/sponge electrode were 299.52 and 31.62 μmol h-1, which were higher than that of MWNTs/sponge electrodes. The addition of pollutants had different degrees of inhibitory effect on CO2 reduction, among which addition of bisphenol A (BPA) had the smallest effect that the degradation rate of BPA was 94.37% and the C1 products remained 204.43 μmol after 60 min discharge. The mechanism of CO2RR was studied by quencher experiment, and the main contribution order of the active substance in DBD system for CO2RR is: H+>e->·OH>·O2-. It was found that the degradation process of pollutants consumed H+ and e- in solution, thereby inhibiting CO2RR. Generally, the SnS2/MWNTs/sponge electrode provided a reference for the design of catalysts for CO2 reduction and pollutant degradation in plasma gas-liquid system.

Abstract
Compared with other biomass sources, the use of algae as a raw material to prepare biochar (BC) has important advantages including safety, high yield and economy. The protein content of algae cells is as high as 3.2 mg DCW/L, and the graphitic-N and N-O functional groups generated by the pyrolysis of proteins could effectively activate free radicals. Combined with the generated pore structure, the electron transfer/exchange capability was enhanced, which is conducive to improving its catalytic performance. Algae as a natural N source, the manuscript analyzed the surface properties and physicochemical properties of algae-based BC, and investigated its degradation effect on organic/inorganic pollutants in wastewater. Subsequently, the effect of nitrogen-doped BC on the adsorption/catalysis capacity was discussed. Finally, the directed preparation of algae-based BC applied in different scenarios was summarized. Algae-based BC has the property of N doping, which broadens its application efficiency in the environmental field. Overall, this manuscript reviews how to achieve efficient utilization of algae-based BC in wastewater.

Abstract
Photodegradation of paraquat herbicide was assessed over several TiO2-WO3 heterojunctions embedded in the diatomite matrix. The characterization results indicated that WO3 embedding in the TiO2 decorated-diatomite matrix could not only enhance the adsorption capacity, visible-light response, and distribution of semiconductor species but also lessen the recombination rate and band gap energy. These characteristics were more noticeable as 5 wt.% of WO3 was embedded. Despite better optical properties of immobilized TiO2-WO3 nanocomposites, overloading WO3 generally alleviates the synergetic effect of tungsten due to surface coverage of diatomite matrix and, subsequently, the significant attenuation of textural properties, more formation of agglomerations and defects as trapping centers in the oxidation sites of heterostructures, and also, less likely of forming TiO2-WO3 heterojunction. In accordance with characterization results, the highest UV-photodegradation of paraquat was attained over heterostructured nanocomposite containing 5 wt.% WO3 (T25-W5/Di). The effects of significant operating parameters were also investigated, modeled, and optimized using response surface methodology (RSM)-central composite design (CCD). Under optimized operation conditions, the experimental removal efficiency of paraquat reached 97.1 and 80% using UV and simulated solar light, respectively. Moreover, the reusability results confirm the sustained activity of the T25-W5/Di nanocomposite.

Abstract
Designing heterojunction photocatalysts with strong interfacial interactions is an effective way to reduce the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Here, silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) nanoparticles are coupled with hollow flower-like indium selenide (In2Se3) microspheres by a facile Ostwald ripening and in-situ growth method, resulting in the construction of In2Se3/Ag3PO4 hollow microsphere step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction with a large contact interface. The flower-like In2Se3 with hollow and porous structure provides a large specific surface area and numerous active sites for photocatalytic reactions to take place. The photocatalytic activity was tested by measuring the hydrogen evolution from antibiotic wastewater, and the H2 evolution rate of In2Se3/Ag3PO4 reached 4206.4 µmol g-1h-1 under visible light, which is approximately 2.8 times greater than that of In2Se3. In addition, the amount of tetracycline (TC) degradation when it was used as a sacrificial agent is about 54.4% after 1 h. On the one hand, Se-P chemical bonds act as electron transfer channels in the S-scheme heterojunctions, which can facilitate the migration and separation of photogenerated charge carriers. On the other hand, the S-scheme heterojunctions can retain the useful holes and electrons with higher redox capacities, which is very favorable for the generation of more •OH radicals and the photocatalytic activity is greatly enhanced. This work provides an alternative design approach for photocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution in antibiotic wastewater.

Targeted Decomplexation of Metal Complexes for Efficient Metal Recovery by Ozone/Percarbonate. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 2023; 57:5034-5045. Abstract
Traditional methods cannot efficiently recover Cu from Cu(II)-EDTA wastewater and encounter the formation of secondary contaminants. In this study, an ozone/percarbonate (O3/SPC) process was proposed to efficiently decomplex Cu(II)-EDTA and simultaneously recover Cu. The results demonstrate that the O3/SPC process achieves 100% recovery of Cu with the corresponding kobs value of 0.103 min-1 compared with the typical •OH-based O3/H2O2 process (81.2%, 0.042 min-1). The carbonate radical anion (CO3•-) is generated from the O3/SPC process and carries out the targeted attack of amino groups of Cu(II)-EDTA for decarboxylation and deamination processes, resulting in successive cleavage of Cu-O and Cu-N bonds. In comparison, the •OH-based O3/H2O2 process is predominantly responsible for the breakage of Cu-O bonds via decarboxylation and formic acid removal. Moreover, the released Cu(II) can be transformed into stable copper precipitates by employing an endogenous precipitant (CO32-), accompanied by toxic-free byproducts in the O3/SPC process. More importantly, the O3/SPC process exhibits excellent metal recovery in the treatment of real copper electroplating wastewater and other metal-EDTA complexes. This study provides a promising technology and opens a new avenue for the efficient decomplexation of metal-organic complexes with simultaneous recovery of valuable metal resources.

Abstract
Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction features a promising approach to realize carbon neutrality. However, its competitiveness is limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at anode, which consumes a large portion of energy. Coupling value-added anodic reactions with CO2 electroreduction has been emerging as a promising strategy in recent years to enhance the full-cell energy efficiency and produce valuable chemicals at both cathode and anode of the electrolyzer. This review briefly summarizes recent progresses on the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, and the economic feasibility of different CO2 electrolysis systems is discussed. Then a comprehensive summary of recent advances in the coupled electrolysis of CO2 and potential value-added anodic reactions is provided, with special focus on the specific cell designs. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for the coupled electrolysis systems are proposed, which are targeted to facilitate progress in this field and push the CO2 electrolyzers to a more practical level.

The role of MnO 2 crystal morphological scale and crystal structure in selective catalytic degradation of azo dye. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2023; 30:15377-15391. Abstract
MnO2, as a representative manganese-based catalyst with many kinds of crystal forms, has been widely used to activate PMS. However, the role of morphological scale and crystal structures on the catalytic capability of MnO2 still lacks further study. In this study, four different crystal forms of MnO2 (α-MnO2, β-MnO2, γ-MnO2, and δ-MnO2) are succeeded in being fabricated via hydrothermal processes and evaluated by activating PMS for the removal of Reactive Yellow X-RG, typical azo dye. Experiment results indicate that α-MnO2 with a one-dimensional structure exhibits the best catalytic performance among the four as-prepared MnO2, which can be attributed to its broadest crystal interplanar distance (0.692), the highest portion of Mn (III)/Mn (IV) (4.194), and lowest value of average oxidation state AOS (2.696). Correlation analysis confirms that interplanar distance is the most relative factor with the catalytic activity of MnO2 among the three studied factors (R2 = 0.99715). Meanwhile, the morphological scale structure of α-MnO2 can also account for its highest catalytic ability among the four as-prepared MnO2, including its large specific area and advantageous one-dimensional nanostructure. Furthermore, according to the response surface methodology, when the dosage of PMS is 2.369 g/L, the dosage of α-MnO2 is 0.991 g/L, and the initial dye concentration is 1025 mg/L, the maximum removal rate of Reactive Yellow X-RG is up to 97.38%.

Abstract
To develop a non-precious highly efficient cocatalyst to replace Pt on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) for solar H2 production is great significant, but still remains a huge challenge. The emerging single-atom catalyst presents a promising strategy for developing highly efficient non-precious cocatalyst owing to its unique adjustability of local coordination environment and electronic structure. Herein, this work presents a facile approach to achieve single Ni sites (Ni1 -N2 S) with unique local coordination structure featuring one Ni atom coordinated with two nitrogen atoms and one sulfur atom, confirmed by high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculation. Thanks to the unique electron structure of Ni1 -N2 S sites, the 1095 µmol g-1 h-1 of high H2 evolution rate with 4.1% of apparent quantum yield at 420 nm are achieved. This work paves a pathway for designing a highly efficient non-precious transition metal cocatalyst for photocatalytic H2 evolution.

Abstract
Non-noble materials with high efficiency and stability are essential for renewable energy applications. Herein, cobalt phosphide nanoparticles-decorated covalent organic frameworks (CTF-CoP) are synthesized via an in situ self-assembly method combined with the calcination process. In such a configuration, an intimate interaction between CoP and CTF matrix is gained through the Co-N chemical bonds, which not only significantly enhance the recyclability of CoP nanoparticles but also significantly improve the charge separation efficiency. Besides, the synergistically interactive Pδ--Coδ+-Nδ- states induced by the polarization effect of N-anchoring sites benefit for the adsorption and dissociation of water molecules in CTF-CoP. Consequently, CTF-CoP exhibits a higher photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (261.7 μmol g-1 h-1) and better durability as compared with the physically fixed CTF/CoP composite (64.8 μmol g-1 h-1) and even the noble metal-based CTF-Pt (191.3 μmol g-1 h-1). This work provides an avenue to construct highly stable non-noble photocatalyst for energy conversion and also emphasizes the potential of CTFs in constructing efficient heterojunctions.

Abstract
Current research has widely applied heteroatom doping for the promotion of catalyst activity in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems; however, the relationship between heteroatom doping and stimulated activation mechanism transformation is not fully understood. Herein, we introduce nitrogen and sulfur doping into a Co@rGO material for PMS activation to degrade tetracycline (TC) and systematically investigate how heteroatom doping transformed the activation mechanism of the original Co@rGO/PMS system. N was homogeneously inserted into the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) matrix of Co@rGO, inducing a significant increase in the degradation efficiency without affecting the activation mechanism transformation. Additionally, S doping converted Co3O4 to Co4S3 in Co@rGO and transformed the cooperative oxidation pathway into a single non-radical pathway with stronger intensity, which led to a higher stability against environmental interferences. Notably, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrated that Co4S3 had a higher energy barrier for PMS adsorption and cleavage than Co3O4, and therefore, the radical pathway was not easily stimulated by Co4S3. Overall, this study not only illustrated the improvement due to the heteroatom doping of Co@rGO for TC degradation in a PMS system but also bridged the knowledge gap between the catalyst structure and degradation performance through activation mechanism transformation drawn from theoretical and experimental analyses.

Abstract
Electrode materials occupy most of the construction cost of the microbial electrochemical system (MES), and the low mechanical strength and poor electrochemical performance of the commonly used traditional carbon-based materials restrict the promotion and application of this technology. In this study, polymer-based three-dimensional (3D) honeycomb-structure (HS) materials with good mechanical properties were used as supporting materials. Graphene (GR), carbon nanotube (CNT), and polypyrrole (PPy) was separately chosen as a surface conductivity coating layer for preparing MES anodes. The introduction of GR, CNT, and PPy on HS increased surface roughness, hydrophilicity, O and N content, electrochemically active surface area, and decreased charge transfer internal resistance, which promoted the adhesion of microorganisms on their surface and enhanced the extracellular electron transfer process at the electrode/microbe interface. The CNT-HS anode system got the better maximal power density (1700.7 ± 149.0 mW/m2) of the three modified anode systems and 3.60 times that of MES using CC (471.8 ± 27.2 mW/m2) as the anode. The accelerated reactions of the redox species in the outer cell membrane, the promoted electron shuttle secretion, and the enhanced abundance of the tricarboxylic acid cycle-related functional genes in biofilm led to better performance of the CNT-HS anode system. The CNT-HS anode system also exhibited long-term operational stability (>6 months) and a good chemical oxygen demand degradation effect. Furthermore, CNT-HS material exhibited its cost advantage, and its projected cost is estimated to be about $1.8/m2, much lower than the currently used MES anodes ($8.2-548.2/m2). Considering the good mechanical properties, simple preparation process, low manufacturing cost, long-term stability, excellent bio-electrochemical performance, and good pollutant removal ability, HS-based anode has promising potential for high-performance MES in applications.

Abstract
Numerous applications in visible light photocatalysis have been found over conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) whose function could be rationally designed at the molecular level. In this context, the oxidation of thiols into disulfides entails proton and electron transfer and thus requires both Brønsted base and photocatalysis, which could be both combined into CMPs. With carbazole as a Brønsted base and an electron donor, CMPs were constructed to implement the synergistic deprotonation and oxidation of thiols into disulfides in ethanol (C2H5OH). Gratifyingly, the bifunctional CMPs could activate molecular oxygen (O2) to superoxide anion (O2•-) and promote the blue light-induced selective oxidation of thiols into symmetrical disulfides with high efficiency in C2H5OH. More remarkably, the highly selective formation of unsymmetrical disulfides could also be achieved without adding a Brønsted base. This work highlights the feasibility of combining cooperative photocatalysis into CMPs for versatile chemical transformations.

Abstract
The large amount of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in wastewater has caused serious impacts on human health. In the past few years, Sulfate radical (SO4•-) based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are widely recognized for their high removal rates of recalcitrant TrOCs from water. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and persulfate (PS) are stable and non-toxic strong oxidizing oxidants and can act as excellent SO4•- precursors. Compared with hydroxyl radicals(·OH)-based methods, SR-AOPs have a series of advantages, such as long half-life and wide pH range, the oxidation capacity of SO4•- approaches or even exceeds that of ·OH under suitable conditions. In this review, we present the progress of activating PS/PMS to remove TrOCs by different methods. These methods include activation by transition metal, ultrasound, UV, etc. Possible activation mechanisms and influencing factors such as pH during the activation are discussed. Finally, future activation studies of PS/PMS are summarized and prospected. This review summarizes previous experiences and presents the current status of SR-AOPs application for TrOCs removal. Misconceptions in research are avoided and a research basis for the removal of TrOCs is provided.

Abstract
Series of B-doped perovskite-like materials CeCu0.5Co0.5O3 (B-C3O) were fabricated with unique ferromagnetic property due to partial substitution of non-magnetic 2p-impurities boron in the lattice. Then, B-C3O was used for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR), one kind of emerging pollutants with the concentration level up to mg/L in wastewaters. The results indicated that 5.0% B-C3O exhibited stable catalytic ability at pH 3.0-9.0 and high degradation efficiency in co-existing inorganic Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, H2PO4- and organic humic acid. Non-radical 1O2, radicals •OH and SO4•-, as well as ClO- were detected with synergy effect for NOR degradation. By quantifying free radicals, •OH with 0.52 µM and SO4•- with 10.91 µM were obtained at 180 min, verifying the leading role of SO4•-. The degradation process involved the defluorination and decarboxylation, as well as opening of quinolone and piperazinyl rings. Adopting alfalfa as the model plant, the toxicity effect before and after NOR degradation was finally evaluated with seed germination rate and chlorophyll content as the physiological indicators. In summary, non-metal B-doping not only provides a creative strategy for the development of ferromagnetic perovskite-like materials, but also affords excellent catalysts for aiding the advanced oxidation technology for removal of emerging pollutants in wastewaters.

Abstract
Nitrophenols (NPs) are widely used in industries and highly toxic to ecological environment and human health. Because aminophenols (APs) are important chemicals, catalytic reduction of NPs via efficient and environment-friendly strategies is of great importance. Herein, we developed a green photocatalysis route to efficiently convert NPs to APs using a Fe (II) modified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst, where phenanthroline units were employed to bridge Fe (II) and carbon nitride framework. The optimized sample P-CN-8-Fe presented significantly improved absorption of visible light, separation of photogenerated charges and carrier transportation in comparison with the pristine g-C3N4 and the modified samples of CN-Fe and P-CN-8. Accordingly, the P-CN-8-Fe showed a high conversion (97%) of p-nitrophenol (p-NP) to p-aminophenol (p-AP) under 2 h visible light irradiation, and meanwhile possessed high photocatalytic durability. Its high activity was also demonstrated through photocatalytic reduction of other NPs and nitrobenzene compounds. Finally, a possible mechanism was proposed for the photocatalytic reduction of p-NP by P-CN-8-Fe. This work provides an effective approach to prepare Fe (II) modified g-C3N4 through the bridging effect of phenanthroline group, which is a potential visible light driven photocatalyst for reduction of nitrobenzene derivatives.

Mineralization of cyanides via a novel Electro-Fenton system generating •OH and •O 2. WATER RESEARCH 2022; 209:117890. Abstract
Traditional methods of cyanides' (CN-) mineralization cannot overcome the contradiction between the high alkalinity required for the inhibition of hydrogen cyanide evolution and the low alkalinity required for the efficient hydrolysis of cyanate (CNO-) intermediates. Thus, in this study, a novel Electro-Fenton system was constructed, in which the free cyanides released from ferricyanide photolysis can be efficiently mineralized by the synergy of •OH and •O2-. The complex bonds in ferricyanide (100 mL, 0.25 mM) were completely broken within 80 min under ultraviolet radiation, releasing free cyanides. Subsequently, in combination with the heterogeneous Electro-Fenton process, •OH and •O2- were simultaneously generated and 92.9% of free cyanides were transformed into NO3- within 120 min. No low-toxic CNO- intermediates were accumulated during the Electro-Fenton process. A new conversion mechanism was proposed that CN- was activated into electron-deficient cyanide radical (•CN) by •OH, and then the •CN intermediates reacted with •O2- via nucleophilic addition to quickly form NO3-, preventing the formation of CNO- and promoting the mineralization of cyanide. Furthermore, this new strategy was used to treat the actual cyanide residue eluent, achieving rapid recovery of irons and efficient mineralization of cyanides. In conclusion, this study proposes a new approach for the mineralization treatment of cyanide-containing wastewater.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently gained rising consideration for visible light photocatalysis. Their property could be accurately established with specific reactions in which the most investigated one turns out to be the aerobic oxidation of amines. In this contribution, a hydrazone-linked 2D (two-dimensional) porphyrinic COF, Por-DETH-COF, was assembled from 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-benzaldehyde)porphyrin (p-Por-CHO) and 2,5-diethoxyterephthalohydrazide (DETH) and its photocatalytic activity was duly appraised with the aerobic oxidation of amines. Thereby, the red light-driven selective oxidation of benzyl amines to imines was obtained in very high conversions and selectivities with ambient air as the oxidant. Importantly, the photocatalytic system exhibited remarkable compatibility of functional groups and extensive scope of benzyl amines. Notably, the Por-DETH-COF photocatalyst displayed outstanding recyclability after five successive cycles. This work suggests that 2D COFs could contribute a unique juncture for selective organic transformations by photocatalysis.

Abstract
In common advanced oxidation processes, excess reagents and energy are often added to the reaction system to maintain the continuity of the reaction. These additions result in a large waste of resources and energy, which has become a bottleneck in the development of water treatment technology. In this study, we propose a new strategy to solve this problem based on a novel dual-reaction-center (DRC) Fe-ZnS quantum dots (Fe-ZnS QDs) catalyst that forms a non-equilibrium surface with an electron-polarized distribution. Through experimental and theoretical studies, it was verified that the activation of trace amounts of H2O2 could break the energy barrier for pollutants to transfer electrons. The dissolved oxygen (DO) in the reaction system could be activated by gaining energy on the surface of the Fe-ZnS QDs catalyst, and was converted to 1O2 to attack organic pollution. In addition, the pollutants themselves supplied electrons to H2O2 through the surface of the Fe-ZnS QDs catalyst to generate more •OH radicals for pollutant degradation, thus providing two fast paths for pollutant degradation. The system could drive the reaction through a trace amount of H2O2, thereby activating DO to generate 1O2 while effectively using the energy of pollutants. Therefore, the proposed system offers a new direction for the development of environmentally-friendly catalysts and greatly reduces the consumption of resources and energy.

Abstract
The combination of Co(II) and peracetic acid (PAA) is a promising advanced oxidation process for the abatement of refractory organic contaminants, and acetylperoxy (CH3CO3•) and acetoxyl (CH3CO2•) radicals are generally recognized as the dominant and selective intermediate oxidants. However, the role of high-valent cobalt-oxo species [Co(IV)] have been overlooked. Herein, we confirmed that Co(II)/PAA reaction enables the generation of Co(IV) at acidic conditions based on multiple lines of evidences, including methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO)-based probe experiments, 18O isotope-labeling technique, and in situ Raman spectroscopy. In-depth investigation reveals that the PAA oxidation mechanism is strongly pH dependent. The elevation of solution pH could induce major oxidants converting from Co(IV) to oxygen-centered radicals (i.e., CH3CO3• and CH3CO2•). The presence of H2O2 competitively consumes both Co(IV) and reactive radicals generated from Co(II)/PAA process, and thus, leading to an undesirably decline in catalytic performance. Additionally, as a highly reactive and selective oxidant, Co(IV) reacts readily with organic substances bearing electron-rich groups, and efficiently attenuating their biological toxicity. Our findings enrich the fundamental understanding of Co(II) and PAA reaction and will be useful for the application of Co(IV)-mediated processes.
