Abstract
Fluorescence quenching induced by photoinduced electron transfer (PET) stands as an effective strategy for identifying water pollutants. Herein, a novel (4, 8)-connected three-dimensional framework Cu(I)-MOF ([Cu2I(tpt)]n) with unique 8-connected [Cu4I2]2+ cationic clusters is designed by employing the nitrogen-rich ligand (Htpt = 5-[4(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)]phenyl-2H-tetrazole). Water-stabilized Cu(I)-MOF exhibits outstanding fluorescence properties, facilitating its application in detecting organic pollutants in water. Benefiting from the fact that the Cu(I)-MOF possesses a higher lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) energy level than that of the analyte, the rapid d-PET can occur, entitling Cu(I)-MOF to a sensitive fluorescence quenching response to roxarsone (ROX), nitrofurazone (NFZ) and nitrofurantoin (NFT) (with detection limits as low as 0.13 µM, 0.15 µM, and 0.13 µM, respectively). The nitrogen-containing sites of melamine foam (MF) are utilized to facilitate the anchoring and growth of Cu-MOF crystals, which enables the preparation of hierarchical microporous - macroporous Cu(I)-MOF/MF composites. The ordered porous structure of Cu(I)-MOF/MF provides cavities and open sites for the efficient removal of ROX (qmax = 210.6 mg∙g-1), NFZ (qmax = 111.5 mg∙g-1) and NFT (qmax = 238.9 mg∙g-1) from water. This characteristic endows the Cu(I)-MOF/MF with rapid and recyclable adsorption capacity. Therefore, this work provides valuable insights to address the problem of detection and removal of pollutants in the aquatic environment.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an important transition metal, and its isotopes have important applications in geology, environmental science, soil science, and other fields. Cu isotope fractionation can occur in many natural processes. However, the mechanism of Cu isotope fractionation in solution/hydrothermal solution systems is not very clear. In this study, the fractionation effects of complexes of Cu(I) and Cu(II) in solution/hydrothermal solution systems were systematically studied by means of an ab initio method based on first principles. In the simulation of an aqueous solution system, the theoretical treatment method used is the "water-droplet" method. The results show that the heavy Cu isotope (65Cu) enrichment capacity of the Cu-bearing complex solutions is greatly affected by the ligand types both for Cu(I) and Cu(II). For Cu(I) complex solutions, the heavy Cu isotope enrichment sequence is [Cu(HS)2]-·(H2O)42 > [Cu(HS)(H2O)]·(H2O)42 ≈ [Cu(HS)(H2S)]·(H2O)42 > [CuCl]·(H2O)42 > [CuCl2]-·(H2O)42 > [CuCl3]2-·(H2O)42. For the aqueous solutions of Cu(II) with an inorganic ligand (such as H2O, OH-, NO3-, SO42- and CN-), the order of heavy Cu isotope enrichment is as follows: [Cu(H2O)6]2+·(H2O)42 > [Cu(NO3)2]·(H2O)42 > [Cu(OH)2]·(H2O)42 > [CuSO4(H2O)3]·(H2O)42 > [CuNO3(H2O)4]+·(H2O)42 > [CuCN]+·(H2O)42. For the Cu(II) complex solutions with a halogen as ligands, the change order of 1000lnβ is [CuCl]+·(H2O)42 > [CuCl2]·(H2O)42 > [CuBr2]·(H2O)42 > [CuCl3]-·(H2O)42. The sequence of 1000lnβ for Cu(II) organic complex aqueous solutions is [Cu(HOC6H4COO)]+·(H2O)42 > [Cu(CH3CH2COO)]+·(H2O)42 > [Cu(COOHCOO)]+·(H2O)42. The calculation also found that for Cu(I) complex aqueous solutions, the difference in Cu isotope fractionation parameters (1000lnβ) between [CuCl2]-·(H2O)42 and [Cu(HS)2]-·(H2O)42 is relatively large. At 100 °C, the 1000lnβ of the two species are 1.14 and 1.55 (‱), respectively. The difference between the two could be reached up to 0.41 (‱). The Cu isotope fractionation parameter obtained with the "water droplet" method is also very different from the results of previous studies, which indicate that the Cu isotope fractionation behavior of the two is similar. At the same time, the exciting discovery is that the enrichment capacity of heavy Cu isotopes is significantly different between Cu(I) complex aqueous solutions and Cu(II) complex aqueous solutions. At 100 °C, the 1000lnβ of 6 Cu(I) complex aqueous solutions and 13 Cu(II) complex aqueous solutions ranged from 0.90 to 1.55 and 2.24 to 3.25(‱), respectively. It also shows that the REDOX reaction has a significant effect on the Cu isotope fractionation, especially in ore-forming fluids. Therefore, the ligand type is a factor that cannot be ignored when considering the mechanism of Cu isotope fractionation in solution/hydrothermal solution systems. Whether the solvation effect of an aqueous solution is considered or not has a great influence on the numerical values of the final Cu isotope fractionation factors. Hence, the solvation effect of an aqueous solution is an essential determinant in the theoretical calculation of the Cu isotope fractionation factors for Cu-bearing complex solutions.

Abstract
The effective capture of radioiodine is vital to the development of the nuclear industry and ecological environmental protection. There is, therefore, a continuously growing research exploration in various types of solid-state materials for iodine capture. During the last decade, the potential of using macrocycle and cage-based supramolecular materials in effective uptake and separation of radioactive iodine has been demonstrated. Interest in the application of these materials in iodine capture originates from their diversified porous characteristics, abundant host-guest chemistry, high iodine affinity and adsorption capacity, high stability in various environments, facile modification and functionalization, and intrinsic structural flexibility, among other attributes. Herein, recent progress in macrocycle and cage-based solid-state materials, including pure discrete macrocycles and cages, and their polymeric forms, for iodine capture is summarized and discussed with an emphasis on iodine capture capacities, mechanisms, and design strategies.

Abstract
Fast and selective detection of contaminants plays a key role in meeting human health and environmental concerns. Herein, two groups of isostructural lanthanide MOFs, [Ln(Hpta)(oxalic acid)]·H2O (1-Eu, 2-Gd) and [Ln(pta)(oxalic acid)0.5(H2O)2]·2H2O (3-Eu, 4-Gd) (H2pta = 2-(4-pyridyl)-terephthalic acid, C2O4- = oxalic acid), were synthesized by solvothermal method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1 and 2 are 3D neutral frameworks, while 3 and 4 consist of 2D layers with parallelogram holes and stack into 3D networks through O-H⋯N and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding interactions. All complexes remain crystalline and stable below 400 °C, suggesting preeminent thermostability. Noteworthily, only 3 shows excellent chemical stability in water and organic solvent. Therefore, the solid-state fluorescence spectrum was used to characterize 3 which exhibited intense red luminescence. The N active sites in the pore channels of 3 are conducive to displaying a distinct quenching effect for Fe3+ cations in aqueous solutions, Cr2O72- anions in DMF and DMA solutions, and nitrofuran antibiotics in the DMF solvent. Overall, 3 is a prospective luminescent sensor for detecting Fe3+, Cr2O72- and nitrofuran antibiotics.

Abstract
The isolation and structural characterization of a unique Cu(II) isonicotinate (ina) material with 4-acetylpyridine (4-acpy) is provided. The formation of [Cu(ina)2(4-acpy)]n (1) is triggered by the Cu(II) aerobic oxidation of 4-acpy using O2. This gradual formation of ina led to its restrained incorporation and hindered the full displacement of 4-acpy. As a result, 1 is the first example of a 2D layer assembled by an ina ligand capped by a monodentate pyridine ligand. The Cu(II)-mediated aerobic oxidation with O2 was previously demonstrated for aryl methyl ketones, but we extend the applicability of this methodology to heteroaromatic rings, which has not been tested so far. The formation of ina has been identified by 1H NMR, thus demonstrating the feasible but strained formation of ina from 4-acpy in the mild conditions from which 1 was obtained.

Abstract
A novel 2D covalent organic polymer (COP), based on conjugated quinoid-oligothiophene (QOT) and tris(aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) moieties, is designed and synthesized (TAPB-QOT COP). Some DFT calculations are made to clarify the equilibrium between different QOT isomers and how they could affect the COP formation. Once synthetized, the polymer has been thoroughly characterized by spectroscopic (i.e., Raman, UV-vis), SSNMR and surface (e.g., SEM, BET) techniques, showing a modest surface area (113 m2 g-1) and micropore volume (0.014 cm3 g-1 with an averaged pore size of 5.6-8 Å). Notwithstanding this, TAPB-QOT COP shows a remarkably high iodine (I2) uptake capacity (464 %wt) comparable to or even higher than state-of-the-art porous organic polymers (POPs). These auspicious values are due to the thoughtful design of the polymer with embedded sulfur sites and a conjugated scaffold with the ability to counterbalance the relatively low pore volumes. Indeed, both morphological and Raman data, supported by computational analyses, prove the very high affinity between the S atom in our COP and the I2. As a result, TAPB-QOT COP shows the highest volumetric I2 uptake (i.e., the amount of I2 uptaken per volume unit) up to 331 g cm-3 coupled with a remarkably high reversibility (>80% after five cycles).

Abstract
The present work explores two biphenyl-dicarboxylate linkers, 3,3'-dihydroxy-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-dicarboxylic (H4L1) and 4,4'-dihydroxy-(1,1'-biphenyl)-3,3'-dicarboxylic (H4L2) acids, in hydrothermal generation of nine new compounds formulated as [Co2(μ2-H2L1)2(phen)2(H2O)4] (1), [Mn2(μ4-H2L1)2(phen)2]n·4nH2O (2), [Zn(μ2-H2L1)(2,2'-bipy)(H2O)]n (3), [Cd(μ2-H2L1) (2,2'-bipy)(H2O)]n (4), [Mn2(μ2-H2L1)(μ4-H2L1)(μ2-4,4'-bipy)2]n·4nH2O (5), [Zn(μ2-H2L1)(μ2-4,4'-bipy)]n (6), [Zn(μ2-H2L2)(phen)]n (7), [Cd(μ3-H2L2)(phen)]n (8), and [Cu(μ2-H2L2) (μ2-4,4'-bipy)(H2O)]n (9). These coordination polymers (CPs) were generated by reacting a metal(II) chloride, a H4L1 or H4L2 linker, and a crystallization mediator such as 2,2'-bipy (2,2'-bipyridine), 4,4'-bipy (4,4'-bipyridine), or phen (1,10-phenanthroline). The structural types of 1-9 range from molecular dimers (1) to one-dimensional (3, 4, 7) and two-dimensional (8, 9) CPs as well as three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2, 5, 6). Their structural, topological, and interpenetration features were underlined, including an identification of unique two- and fivefold 3D + 3D interpenetrated nets in 5 and 6. Phase purity, thermal and luminescence behavior, as well as catalytic activity of the synthesized products were investigated. Particularly, a Zn(II)-based CP 3 acts as an effective and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for Henry reaction between a model substrate (4-nitrobenzaldehyde) and nitroethane to give β-nitro alcohol products. For this reaction, various parameters were optimized, followed by the investigation of the substrate scope. By reporting nine new compounds and their structural traits and functional properties, the present work further outspreads a family of CPs constructed from the biphenyl-dicarboxylate H4L1 and H4L2 linkers.

Abstract
A coordination polymer with dual functions of high proton conductivity and highly sensitive fluorescent sensors demonstrates a great application potential. In this work, a cadmium-based coordination polymer (denoted as CP 1) with hydrothermal stability was synthesized. The abundant coordination water, lattice water, and amino groups make an extended hydrogen-bonding pathway for efficient proton migration, which endows CP 1 with the highest proton conductivity of 2.41 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 353 K and 98% RH. Especially, the proton conductivity of the chitosan (CS) hybrid membrane containing CP 1 reaches a maximum value of 2.62 × 10-2 S·cm-1 under 343 K and 98% RH, which increases almost 7 times higher than that of the pure CS membrane due to the host-guest collaboration. Furthermore, luminescence studies revealed that CP 1 is a high-sensitivity and good-selectivity fluorescent probe for the detection of trace amounts of l-histidine with a lowest detection limit of 1.0 × 10-8 M.

Abstract
Cu is one of the dominant heavy metals toxic to human health and environmental ecosystems. Understanding its fate and chemical speciation is of great importance for hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of Cu-rich hazardous streams. Herein, we investigated its evolution during the HTL of wastewater algae through ICP-MS, XRD, XANES, and EXAFS. Cu-cysteine complexes (51.5%) and Cu2S (40.4%) were the main components of Cu in algae, whereas the predominant form was CuS (70.9%) in 220 °C-hydrochar. Model compound experiments indicated that Cu-cysteine could be converted into CuS, while Cu2S was stable during HTL. However, Cu2S was partially converted into CuS in the hydrochar. Subsequently, the positive Gibbs free energy (36.8 KJ/mol) indicates that the oxidation from Cu+ to Cu2+ can't occur spontaneously. Furthermore, cyclic voltammograms demonstrated that hydrochar facilitated the oxidation of Cu2S due to its higher capability of electron acceptance. All these results prove that hydrochar serves as a catalyst for the conversion of Cu2S to CuS during HTL. This study firstly elucidated that Cu2S was oxidized into CuS in the presence of hydrochar, and Cu-cysteine was converted into CuS under HTL. This study provides a critical insight into the transformation mechanism of Cu during the HTL of hazardous streams.

Abstract
The mix-ligand coordination compound, [Cu(Nal)(Phen)(H2O)].(Phen).ClO4.(H2O)2 (Nal= Monoanion of nalidixic acid and Phen = 1,10- Phenanthroline), was investigated by focusing on its supramolecular architecture. Structural properties of the complex were characterized by XRD, spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis. The complex has crystallized in the triclinic crystal system and P-1 space group. In the structure where the Cu (II) ion is in the center of symmetry, nalidixate anion and water molecule coordinated to Cu (II) metal through oxygen atoms while phen coordinated through nitrogen atoms. The monomer units are connected by hydrogen bonds to form supramolecular structures. The ground state molecular structure of the complex was optimized using DFT/B3LYP/LANL2DZ method, and compared with experimental X-ray geometry. The FT-IR study of the complex was carried out in the middle IR region focusing on the characteristic vibrations of the free ligands and the complex. Scaled calculated vibrational frequencies are compared with experimental values. The magnetic properties of the complex were investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Further ultra-violet (UV)-visible spectral analysis was also performed to understand optical properties. The experimental UV-Vis data were associated with the calculated frontier molecular orbitals HOMO/LUMO and, molecular electrostatic potentials (MEP) are also investigated. Biological study of the complex against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Candida albicans showed very strong antibacterial activity with MIC values ranging from 128 μg/ml to 1 μg/ml concentration. The optimized complex is docked to the DNA Gyrase (3LPX) and gyrase tip IIA topoisomerase (3UC1).

Abstract
Rechargeable potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale electrochemical energy-storage applications because of the abundance and low cost of potassium. However, the development of KIBs is hampered by the lack of stable and high-capacity cathode materials. Herein, a functionalized porphyrin complex, [5,15-bis(ethynyl)-10,20-diphenylporphinato]copper(II) (CuDEPP), was proposed as a new cathode for rechargeable potassium batteries. Spectroscopy and molecular simulation studies were used to show that both PF6 - and K+ interact with the porphyrin macrocycle to allow a four-electron transfer. In addition, the electrochemical polymerization of the ethynyl functional groups in CuDEPP resulted in the self-stabilization of the cathode, which was highly stable during cycling. This unique charge storage mechanism enabled CuDEPP to provide a capacity of 181 mAh g-1 with an average potential of 2.8 V (vs. K+ /K). These findings could open a pathway towards the design of new stable organic electrodes for KIBs.

Abstract
Two new copper(ii) coordination compounds, [Cu(H1.5mdea)2]2(H2pma) (1a) and [{Cu2(μ-Hmdea)2}2(μ4-pma)]n·2nH2O (1b), were self-assembled at different temperatures from the same multicomponent reaction system, comprising copper(ii) nitrate, N-methyldiethanolamine (H2mdea), pyromellitic acid (H4pma), and potassium hydroxide. Products 1a and 1b were isolated as microcrystalline solids and fully characterized and their structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1a features the bis-aminoalcohol(ate) monocopper(ii) units and H2pma2- anions that are multiply interconnected by strong H-bonds into a firm 2D H-bonded layer. Compound 1b reveals the bis-aminoalcoholate dicopper(ii) motifs that are interlinked by the μ4-pma4- spacers into a 3D + 3D interpenetrated metal-organic framework. From a topological perspective, both networks of 1a and 1b are uninodal and driven by similar 4-connected H2pma2- or pma4- nodes, but result in distinct sql and dia topologies, respectively. Compound 1a was applied as an efficient catalyst for two model cycloalkane functionalization reactions: (1) oxidation by H2O2 to form cyclic alcohols and ketones and (2) hydrocarboxylation by CO/H2O and S2O82- to form cycloalkanecarboxylic acids. The substrate scope, effects of various reaction parameters, selectivity and mechanistic features were also investigated.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions (NEs) comprising ionic liquids (ILs); ethanolammonium formate (HO-EOAF), proliniumisopropylester dioctylsulfosuccinate ([ProC3][AOT]), and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, ([Bmim][NTf2]) as insoluble hydrophilic, surface active, and hydrophobic components have been constructed. This novel class of colloidal formulations exhibited several contrasting properties vis-à-vis conventional water-in-oil or water-in-ionic liquid or nonaqueous NEs such as (i) spontaneous formation, (ii) thermodynamic stability and isotropic nature, (iii) decrease of droplet size with increase in polar medium concentration, and (iv) high thermal and kinetic stability. Mechanisms and characteristics for such anomalies have been investigated by physical, spectroscopic, and imaging techniques. NEs have been demonstrated as versatile recyclable nanoreactors for user-friendly synthesis of materials such as metal-organic frameworks/light harvesting hybrid systems. We anticipate that this development will lead to the construction of several other need-based "all ionic-liquid nanoemulsions" in view of the flexibility provided by the tailoring nature of ILs.

Abstract
A new silver(I) iodide cluster [Ag4I4(TMP)4] (TMP = tris(3-methylphenyl)-phosphine) 1 shows triply stimuli-responsive luminescent chromism, namely, mechano-, thermo- and solvent-responsive chromism, which is isostructural to our previously reported [Cu4I4(TMP)4] 2 but shows quite different luminescence in response to the external stimuli. Especially, during the mechanical grinding, the relative intensities of HE and LE of 1 varied with a concomitant hypsochromic shift, and when the temperature was decreased from 300 to 5 K, unprecedented contrary thermo-responsive trend for single crystal and powered samples (blueshift of single crystals and redshift of powdered samples) was observed. These distinct characters of 1 should be due to the different molecular packing modes, metallic interactions and the unique character of Ag(I) ion.

Abstract
Binuclear and tetranuclear copper(II) complexes are of interest because of their structural, magnetic and photoluminescence properties. Of the several important configurations of tetranuclear copper(II) complexes, there are limited reports on the crystal structures and solid-state photoluminescence properties of `stepped' tetranuclear copper(II) complexes. A new CuII complex, namely bis{μ3-3-[(4-methoxy-2-oxidobenzylidene)amino]propanolato}bis{μ2-3-[(4-methoxy-2-oxidobenzylidene)amino]propanolato}tetracopper(II), [Cu4(C11H13NO3)4], has been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, FT-IR, solid-state UV-Vis spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure determination shows that the complex is a stepped tetranuclear structure consisting of two dinuclear [Cu2(L)2] units {L is 3-[(4-methoxy-2-oxidobenzylidene)amino]propanolate}. The two terminal CuII atoms are four-coordinated in square-planar environments, while the two central CuII atoms are five-coordinated in square-pyramidal environments. The solid-state photoluminescence properties of both the complex and 3-[(2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzylidene)amino]propanol (H2L) have been investigated at room temperature in the visible region. When the complex and H2L are excited under UV light at 349 nm, the complex displays a strong blue emission at 469 nm and H2L displays a green emission at 515 nm.
