Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES In this study, AuDNs/EPLE composite electrodes with hierarchical dendritic nanogold structures were fabricated using the in situ electrodeposition of gold nanoparticles through the i-t method. METHODS A conductive polymer composite membrane, PEDOT, was synthesized via the electropolymerization of EDOT and the negatively charged PSS-. The negatively charged SO3- groups on the surface of the PEDOT membrane were electrostatically adsorbed with the glucose oxidase (GOD) enzyme and a positively charged chitosan co-solution (GOD/chit+). Using a layer-by-layer self-assembly approach, GOD was incorporated into the multilayers of the composite electrode to create the composite GOD/chit+/PEDOT/AuDNs/EPLE. RESULTS Electrochemical analysis revealed a GOD surface coverage of 8.5 × 10-10 mol cm-2 and an electron transfer rate of 1.394 ± 0.02 s-1. The composite electrode exhibited a linear response to glucose in the concentration range of 6.923 × 10-2 mM to 1.54 mM, with an apparent Michaelis constant of 0.352 ± 0.02 mM. Furthermore, the GOD/chit+/PEDOT/AuDNs/EPLE also showed good accuracy of glucose determination in human serum samples. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the potential of the GOD/chit+/PEDOT/AuDNs/EPLE composite electrode in the development of efficient enzymatic biofuel cells for glucose sensing and energy harvesting applications.

Abstract
Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is a chronic multifaceted metabolic condition characterized by elevated blood glucose levels with varying degrees of insulin resistance and abnormal insulin production. Lifestyle modifications, such as those defined by the guidelines for diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES), are foundational for glycemic control. A current gap in T2D management is addressing DSMES which is tailored to best serve the diversity of patients with this disease. The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss the current literature related to lifestyle modification for T2D, the importance of culturally sensitive T2D management programs, and the impact culturally sensitive and diverse T2D management programs have on cardiometabolic health. Despite being disproportionately affected by T2D, racial and ethnic minorities have low referral rates for DSMES. This growing disparity may be exacerbated by a lack of awareness of how to adapt lifestyle modifications in a culturally competent manner and how social determinants of health (SDOH) may affect the infrastructure and resources available to diverse patient populations. Currently, there is limited research on how DSMES is addressed to include culturally and literacy-sensitive recommendations in the United States. Patient-centered care, emphasizing personalized DSMES, can lead to improved glycemic control, reduced healthcare costs, and improved cardiometabolic health. A key component of effective DSMES should include culturally and literacy-sensitive approaches with an awareness of the impact of SDOH. Understanding how ethnicity, race, and culture influence experiences with T2D management can help providers prescribe more patient-centered and sustainable recommendations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were 1) to examine and compare changes in functional limitations during the COVID-19 pandemic among older adults with and without diabetes; and 2): to identify key risk factors associated with developing functional limitations among older adults with and without diabetes during the pandemic. METHODS We analyzed data collected from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. The analysis was restricted to those with no functional limitations in the follow-up 1 wave (2015 to 2018) (final sample N=6,045). Regression models were used to describe associations between diabetes status and functional limitation outcomes. We conducted stratified analyses to evaluate whether these associations varied by sociodemographic indicators. We also predicted the probability of the development of ≥1 functional limitation among those with and without diabetes for various patient profiles. RESULTS Older adults with diabetes were 1.28-fold (95% confidence interval 1.02 to 1.60) more likely to develop ≥1 functional limitation than older adults without diabetes after controlling for relevant sociodemographic and health covariates. Risk factors for incident functional limitations among older adults, both with and without diabetes, include increasing age, low socioeconomic status, obesity, multimorbidity, and physical inactivity. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that older adults with diabetes were at an increased risk of developing functional limitations during the pandemic when compared with older adults without diabetes, even when controlling for several key risk factors. Targetting modifiable risk factors, such as physical activity, may help to reduce the risk of functional limitations among older adults with diabetes.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to test the association between protein intake and blood pressure, glucose levels, and blood cholesterol in a large sample of Italian older adults. Longevity Check-up 7+ (Lookup 7+) is an ongoing project that started in June 2015. The project is conducted in unconventional settings (e.g., exhibitions, malls, health promotion campaigns) across Italy with the aim of fostering adoption of healthy lifestyles in the general population. For the present study, participants were eligible if they were 65+ years and provided written informed consent. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and blood glucose and cholesterol levels were assessed. Protein intake was estimated using a 12-item food frequency questionnaire. Three-thousand four-hundred and four older adults were included in the study. The results of the linear regression showed an inverse association between protein intake (as a continuous variable) and DBP, and a positive correlation with blood cholesterol levels. The findings of the present study indicate that a high intake of protein was negatively associated with DBP and positively associated with total blood cholesterol levels in a large cohort of Italian older adults, after adjustment for numerous covariates.

Abstract
Aims: Thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) is a crucial molecular promoter of oxidative stress and has been identified to be associated with cellular senescence. It is an important mediator of β cell insulin secretion and has effects on β cell mass. However, its role in β cell senescence is unclear. The present study was designed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of TXNIP on the senescence and aging- and diet-related dysfunction of β cells. Methods: Human pancreatic paraffin tissues and serum samples from different ages were collected to detect TXNIP expression. TXNIP-/- and C57BL/6J mice were fed either a normal chow diet (NCD) or a high-fat diet (HFD) until 5, 11, 14, or 20 months. The recapitulation experiment was conducted with TXNIP protein injection. MIN6 cells were transfected with LV-TXNIP and LV-siTXNIP. The biochemical indexes, ageing-related markers, cell cycle proteins, and pathways were examined both in vivo and in vitro. Results: TXNIP expression showed an age-related increase in β cells and serum samples from humans. TXNIP significantly impaired glucose metabolism and insulin secretion in an age-dependent manner. TXNIP aggravated age-related and obesity-induced structural failure, oxidative stress, decreased proliferation, increased apoptosis in β cells, and induced the cell cycle arrest. TXNIP interacted with p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK) and modulated the p16/p21-CDK-Rb axis to accelerate β cell senescence. Innovation and Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that TXNIP may exacerbate pancreatic β cell senescence and age-related dysfunction by inducing cell cycle arrest through the p38-p16/p21-CDK-Rb pathway, in natural and pathological states. Abstract
Introduction Sarcopenia is a multidimensional condition that negatively affects muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. The prevalence of sarcopenia in people with diabetes is much higher than that of the general population, especially in individuals with poor nutritional status. Both sarcopenia and malnutrition are conditions amenable to intervention to improve clinical prognosis. This article describes the results of the expert consensus and the responses of the panelists on the nutritional management in routine clinical practice of patients with diabetes/hyperglycemia hospitalized (non-critically ill) with sarcopenia.

Abstract
Diabetic cardiomyopathy seriously affects the life quality of diabetic patients and can lead to heart failure and death in severe cases. Acacetin was reported to be an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent in several cardiovascular diseases. However, the effect of acacetin on diabetic cardiomyopathy was not understood. This study was designed to explore the therapeutic effect of acacetin on diabetic cardiomyopathy and the potential mechanism with in vitro and in vivo experimental techniques. In cultured neonatal rat cardiomyocytes and H9C2 cardiac cells, acacetin (0.3, 1, 3 μM) showed effective protection against high glucose-induced injury in a concentration-dependent manner. Acacetin countered high glucose-induced increase of Bax and decrease of Bcl-2, SOD1, and SOD2. In streptozotocin-induced rat diabetic cardiomyopathy model, treatment with acacetin prodrug (10 mg/kg, s.c., b.i.d.) significantly improved the cardiac function and reduced myocardial injury, and reversed the increase of serum MDA, Ang Ⅱ, and IL-6 levels and myocardial Bax and IL-6, and the decrease of serum SOD, indicating that acacetin plays a cardioprotective effect by inhibiting oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. In addition, both in vitro and in vivo experimental results showed that acacetin increased the expression of PPAR-α and pAMPK, indicating that PPAR-α and pAMPK are potential targets of acacetin for the protection against diabetic cardiomyopathy. This study demonstrates the new application of acacetin for treating diabetic cardiomyopathy.

Abstract
Ageing is a physiological process of progressive decline in the organism function over time. It affects every organ in the body and is a significant risk for chronic diseases. Molecular hydrogen has therapeutic and preventive effects on various organs. It has antioxidative properties as it directly neutralizes hydroxyl radicals and reduces peroxynitrite level. It also activates Nrf2 and HO-1, which regulate many antioxidant enzymes and proteasomes. Through its antioxidative effect, hydrogen maintains genomic stability, mitigates cellular senescence, and takes part in histone modification, telomere maintenance, and proteostasis. In addition, hydrogen may prevent inflammation and regulate the nutrient-sensing mTOR system, autophagy, apoptosis, and mitochondria, which are all factors related to ageing. Hydrogen can also be used for prevention and treatment of various ageing-related diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, and cancer. This paper reviews the basic research and recent application of hydrogen in order to support hydrogen use in medicine for ageing prevention and ageing-related disease therapy.

Abstract
Whether propylene oxide (PO) exposure is associated with hyperglycemia were rarely explored. We aimed to determine the relationship between PO exposure and glucose metabolism, and potential role of oxidative stress. Among 3294 Chinese urban adults, urinary PO metabolite (N-Acetyl-S-(2-hydroxypropyl)-L-cysteine, 2HPMA), biomarkers of oxidative DNA damage (8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-20-deoxyguanosine, 8-OHdG) and lipid peroxidation (8-isoprostane, 8-iso-PGF2α) in urine were determined. The associations of 2HPMA with 8-OHdG, 8-iso-PGF2α, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and risk of diabetes were explored. The roles of 8-OHdG and 8-iso-PGF2α on association of 2HPMA with FPG and risk of diabetes were detected. After adjusted for potential confounders, each 1-unit increase in log-transformed concentration of 2HPMA was associated with a 0.15-mmol/L increase in FPG level, and the adjusted OR (95% CI) of diabetes by the associations of log-transformed urinary 2HPMA concentrations was 1.47 (95% CI: 1.03-2.11). Combination effects of 2HPMA with 8-OHdG or 8-iso-PGF2α on risk of diabetes were detected, and elevated 8-iso-PGF2α significantly mediated 34.5% of the urinary 2HPMA-associated FPG elevation. PO exposure was positively associated with FPG levels and risk of diabetes. PO exposure combined with DNA oxidative damage or lipid peroxidation may increase the risk of diabetes, and lipid peroxidation may partially mediate the PO exposure-induced FPG elevation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Diabetes is a major chronic condition and was identified as one of the four priority non-communicable diseases that the United Nations targeted because of its increasing disease burden. The present study aims to examine the impact of physical activity on improving diabetes mellitus among older adults in India. METHODS This study utilizes data from India's first nationally representative longitudinal ageing survey (2017-18). Descriptive along with bivariate analysis was used to present the preliminary results. Additionally, Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was used. RESULTS About 14% of older adults suffered from diabetes. Eighteen percent of older adults did frequent physical activity. The estimated average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) values in treated and control groups were 0.123 and 0.147, respectively, indicating that the prevalence of diabetes among older adults was reduced by 2.5% points because of frequent physical activity. The average treatment effect on the untreated (ATU) results indicates that among older adults who did not do frequent physical activity, if they did frequent physical activity, the prevalence of diabetes is likely to decrease by 2.2% points. CONCLUSION Our findings show that frequent physical activity is associated with a lower risk of diabetes in older adults. The results underscore the need to develop strategies of promoting an active lifestyle by maintaining physical activity to combat the diabetes epidemic in the older population.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus has a high prevalence worldwide, with a rapidly increasing incidence even in youth. Nutrition, dietary macronutrient composition, and in particular dietary carbohydrates play a major role in the development of type 2 diabetes. The aim of this narrative review is to discuss the current evidence on the role of dietary carbohydrates in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes. The digestibility or availability of carbohydrates and their glycemic index (and glycemic load) markedly influence the glycemic response. High consumption of dietary fiber is beneficial for management of type 2 diabetes, whereas high consumption of both glycemic starch and sugars may have a harmful effect on glucose metabolism, thereby increasing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the presence of genetic predisposition or making its glycemic control more difficult to achieve in people with established T2D. Therefore, the same dietary macronutrient may have harmful or beneficial effects on type 2 diabetes mainly depending on the subtypes consumed. Some other factors are involved in glucose metabolism, such as meal composition, gut microbiota and genetics. For this reason, the glycemic response after carbohydrate consumption is not easy to predict in the single individual. Nutrition suggested to subjects with known type 2 diabetes should be always person-centered, considering the individual features of each subject.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between self-reported chewing status and glycemic control in 30,938 Japanese adults who participated in health checkups. Chewing status was evaluated using a self-reported questionnaire. We defined high hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels as a HbA1c level ≥6.5%; 692 (2.2%) respondents met this criterion. After adjusting for gender, age, smoking status, exercise habits, body mass index and eating speed, high HbA1c levels was found to be associated with male gender (odds ratio (OR), 1.568; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.310 to 1.878; p < 0.001), older age (OR, 1.077; 95% CI, 1.068 to 1.087; p < 0.001), higher body mass index (OR, 1.246; 95% CI, 1.225 to 1.268; p < 0.001), current smoker status (OR, 1.566; 95% CI, 1.303 to 1.882; p < 0.001) and chewing difficulty (OR, 1.302; 95% CI, 1.065 to 1.591; p < 0.05). In conclusion, self-reported chewing difficulty was associated with high HbA1c levels in Japanese adults.

Abstract
High-glucose (HG) suppresses mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) functions, resulting in a decrease in cardiac regenerative capability for MSC in diabetes mellitus (DM). Resveratrol enhances MSC functions under stress. This study explores if cardiac regenerative capability can be enhanced in MSCs pretreated with resveratrol in DM rats receiving MSCs. In vitro evidence confirms that HG decreases MSCs capability through suppression of survival markers, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/Sirtuin 1 (Sirt1) axis, and expression of apoptotic markers. All of these markers are improved when MSCs are cocultured with resveratrol. Wistar male rats were randomly divided into Sham, DM (DM rats), DM rats with autologous transplantation of adipose-derived stem cells (DM + ADSC), and DM rats with resveratrol pretreated ADSC (DM + RSVL-ADSC). Compared to the Sham, DM induces pathological pathways (including fibrosis, hypertrophy, and apoptosis) and suppresses survival as well as the AMPK/Sirt1 axis in the DM group. DM + ADSC slightly improves the above pathways whereas DM + RSVL-ADSC significantly improves the above pathways when compared to the DM group. These results illustrate that resveratrol pretreated with MSCs may show clinical potential in the treatment of heart failure in patients with DM.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is among the most prevalent diseases in the world, affecting over 420 million people. The disease is marked by a poor metabolic effect of insulin leading to chronic hyperglycaemia, which can result in microvascular complications. It is widely known that postprandial glycaemia is reliant on the total carbohydrate content of a meal. However, the importance of the amount and the source of these carbohydrates remains controversial due to mechanisms other than insulin secretion. Oxidative stress, inflammation, pyruvate production and the quality of the intestinal microbiota, resulting in plasma lipopolysaccharides and short-chain fatty acids production, play an important role in blood sugar control and consequently in type 2 diabetes. Thus, we systematically reviewed the preclinical evidences on the impact of the amount and type of carbohydrate found in different diets and its influence on blood glucose levels in diabetic animals. We used a comprehensive and structured search in biomedical databases Medline (PubMed), Scopus and Web of Science, recovering and analyzing 27 original studies. Results showed that sucrose-rich diets deteriorated diabetic condition in animal models regardless of the total dietary carbohydrate content. On the other hand, fiber, particularly resistant starch, improved blood glucose parameters through direct and indirect mechanisms, such as delayed gastric emptying and improved gut microbiota. All studies used rodents as animal models and male animals were preferred over females. Improvements in T2DM parameters in animal models were more closely related to the type of dietary carbohydrate than to its content on a diet, i. e., resistant starch seems to be the most beneficial source for maintaining normoglycemia. Results show that current literature is at high risk of bias due to neglecting experimental methods.

Abstract
Purpose To develop a risk prediction model for postoperative sarcopenia in elderly patients with patellar fractures in China. Patients and methods We conducted a community survey of patients aged ≥55 years who underwent surgery for patellar fractures between January 2013 and October 2018, through telephone interviews, community visits, and outpatient follow-up. We established a predictive model for assessing the risk of sarcopenia after patellar fractures. We developed the prediction model by combining multivariate logistic regression analysis with the least absolute shrinkage model and selection operator regression (lasso analysis) as well as the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. The predictive quality and clinical utility of the predictive model were determined using C-index, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis. We also conducted internal sampling methods for qualitative assessment. Result We recruited 137 participants (53 male; mean age, 65.7 years). Various risk factors were assessed, and low body mass index and advanced age were identified as the most important risk factor (P < 0.05). The prediction rate of the model was good (C-index: 0.88; 95% CI [0.80552–0.95448]), with a satisfactory correction effect. The C index is 0.97 in the validation queue and 0.894 in the entire cohort. Decision curve analysis suggested good clinical practicability. Conclusion Our prediction model shows promise as a cost-effective tool for predicting the risk of postoperative sarcopenia in elderly patients based on the following: advanced age, low body mass index, diabetes, less outdoor exercise, no postoperative rehabilitation, different surgical methods, diabetes, open fracture, and removal of internal fixation.

Abstract
The present study examined the effect of a 12-week combined resistance and aerobic exercise training program on cardiometabolic biomarkers and red blood cell (RBC) hemorheological function in 20 obese older men (mean age: 68.8 ± 0.9 years). Subjects were randomly divided into two groups (exercise intervention [EXP; n = 10] and control [CON; n = 10]). The EXP subjects performed resistance and aerobic exercise training program three times per week for 12 weeks, and the CON subjects maintained their regular lifestyle during the intervention period. Body composition was estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis equipment. Cardiometabolic biomarkers (glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), HOMA β-cell function, and leptin) and RBC hemorheological parameters (RBC deformability and aggregation) were analyzed. Percent body fat decreased significantly in the EXP group during the intervention period but increased significantly in the CON group. Insulin increased significantly in the CON group over the 12-week period and both insulin and HOMA-IR were significantly higher in the CON group than in the EXP group at post-test. RBC deformability (RBC EI_3Pa) and aggregation (RBC AI_3Pa) improved significantly only in the EXP group. The present study suggests that combined exercise training can be useful for improving cardiometabolic biomarkers and RBC hemorheological parameters in obese older men and may help prevent metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
With the advent of recent advances in molecular techniques and whole genome sequencing, we have come to know that the non-coding landscape (including non-coding RNAs, tRNAs and even telomeres) plays a major role in the regulation of cellular processes. Furthermore, the deregulation of this landscape has been found to contribute to and even bring about the pathogenesis of a large number of diseases. One of such diseases is diabetes mellitus (type 2 specifically) whose incidence rate and global burden is constantly increasing. Nutrition has been proven to be a key player in the development, onset and control of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Additionally, non-coding DNA based molecular markers are emerging as biomarkers of T2D, susceptibility, and perhaps dietary supplements can modulate non-coding DNA based markers expression and function in T2D management. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the developmental origins and genetics of type 2 diabetes mellitus, how each component of the non-coding landscape contributes to the development and progression of the disease and finally we discuss how dietary interventions modulate the non-coding landscape in T2D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Floorball training offers a motivating and socially stimulating team activity for older adults, and 12 weeks of floorball training twice a week among men aged 65-76 years have been shown to have positive effects on a number of physiological parameters important for health. However, the effect of long-term participation in floorball training among male elderly has not been investigated. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of 26-month self-organized regular participation in floorball training on cardiovascular fitness, body composition, blood lipids, glucose control, and physical function among recreationally active men aged 66-78 years. METHODS After completing a 12-week randomized and controlled intervention with floorball and petanque training in the autumn 2014 or spring 2015, 15 subjects chose to participate in floorball training (floorball group, FG), whereas 16 subjects resumed their usual lifestyle (control group, CG). FG took part in self-organized floorball training 1.7 sessions of 40 min/week, and CG continued their normal recreationally active lifestyle during a 26-month follow-up period. At baseline and after the follow-up period subjects were tested for cardiovascular fitness, glucose control (resting blood samples), body composition dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA-scanning), and functional capacity. RESULTS In FG, the decline in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) during the follow-up period was lower (242 ± 379 mL/min, p = 0.01), blood glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) increased less (-1.6 ± 2.9 mmol/L, p = 0.02), and leg bone mineral density increased more (0.03 ± 0.05 g/cm2, p = 0.02) than those in CG. The effects on body mass, total lean body mass, fat mass, blood lipids, and physical function were similar in FG and CG. CONCLUSION Approximately twice weekly floorball sessions with 40 min/session over 26-month appear to reduce age-related decline in cardiovascular fitness and glucose control and improve leg bone mineral density, suggesting that long-term participation in floorball training can be considered as a health-enhancing activity in recreationally active male elderly.

Abstract
The effect of small-sided team sport training and protein intake on muscle mass, physical function, and adaptations important for health in untrained older adults was examined. Forty-eight untrained older (72±6 (±standard deviation, SD) years men and women were divided into either a team sport group ingesting a drink high in protein (18 g) immediately and 3 h after each training session (TS-HP, n = 13), a team sport group ingesting an isocaloric drink with low protein content (3 g; TS-LP, n = 18), or a control group continuing their normal activities (CON, n = 17). The team sport training was performed as ~20 min of small-sided ball games twice a week over 12 weeks. After the intervention period, leg muscle mass was 0.6 kg higher (P = 0.047) in TS-HP, with no effect in TS-LP. In TS-HP, number of sit-to-stand repetitions increased (1.2±0.6, P = 0.054), time to perform 2.45 m up-and-go was lower (0.7±0.3 s, P = 0.03) and number of arm curl repetitions increased (3.5±1.2, P = 0.01), whereas in TS-LP only number of repetitions in sit-to-stand was higher (1.6±0.6, P = 0.01). In TS-LP, reductions were observed in total and abdominal fat mass (1.2±0.5 and 0.4±0.2 kg, P = 0.03 and P = 0.02, respectively), heart rate at rest (9±3 bpm, P = 0.002) and plasma C-reactive protein (1.8±0.8 mmol/L, P = 0.03), with no effects in TS-HP. Thus, team sport training improves functional capacity of untrained older adults and increases leg muscle mass only when ingesting proteins after training. Furthermore, team sport training followed by intake of drink with low protein content does lower fat mass, heart rate at rest and level of systemic inflammation. Abstract
Background Assessment of health benefits associated with physical activity depend on the activity duration, intensity and frequency, therefore their correct identification is very valuable and important in epidemiological and clinical studies. The aims of this study are: to develop an algorithm for automatic identification of intended jogging periods; and to assess whether the identification performance is improved when using two accelerometers at the hip and ankle, compared to when using only one at either position. Methods The study used diarized jogging periods and the corresponding accelerometer data from thirty-nine, 15-year-old adolescents, collected under field conditions, as part of the GINIplus study. The data was obtained from two accelerometers placed at the hip and ankle. Automated feature engineering technique was performed to extract features from the raw accelerometer readings and to select a subset of the most significant features. Four machine learning algorithms were used for classification: Logistic regression, Support Vector Machines, Random Forest and Extremely Randomized Trees. Classification was performed using only data from the hip accelerometer, using only data from ankle accelerometer and using data from both accelerometers. Results The reported jogging periods were verified by visual inspection and used as golden standard. After the feature selection and tuning of the classification algorithms, all options provided a classification accuracy of at least 0.99, independent of the applied segmentation strategy with sliding windows of either 60s or 180s. The best matching ratio, i.e. the length of correctly identified jogging periods related to the total time including the missed ones, was up to 0.875. It could be additionally improved up to 0.967 by application of post-classification rules, which considered the duration of breaks and jogging periods. There was no obvious benefit of using two accelerometers, rather almost the same performance could be achieved from either accelerometer position. Conclusions Machine learning techniques can be used for automatic activity recognition, as they provide very accurate activity recognition, significantly more accurate than when keeping a diary. Identification of jogging periods in adolescents can be performed using only one accelerometer. Performance-wise there is no significant benefit from using accelerometers on both locations.

Abstract
Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus may alter the effect of physical activity on physical and cognitive function. Methods The Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) trial randomized controlled clinical trial of physical activity intervention (walking, resistance training, and flexibility exercises) enrolled adults aged 70-89 years who were sedentary and non-demented and who had functional limitations. Standardized measures of physical and cognitive function were collected an average of 2 years post-randomization. Differences between the intervention and control groups from 415 individuals with diabetes and 1,061 individuals without diabetes were contrasted with analyses of covariance. Results At 24 months, assignment to the physical activity intervention resulted in 0.019 m/s relatively faster average 400-meter gait speeds (p = .007 overall) both for individuals with and without diabetes (intervention × diabetes interaction p = .99). No benefits were seen on scores from a physical performance battery. Performance on cognitive tests was better among participants assigned to the physical activity intervention compared with control only for those with diabetes, particularly for global cognitive function (p = .02) and delayed memory (p = .005), with mean [95% confidence intervals] for benefit from physical activity intervention of 0.114 [0.007,0.111] and 0.208 [0.030,0.387] standard deviations, respectively. Conclusions Physical activity intervention improved the gait speed of older, sedentary individuals with and without diabetes. The cognitive function benefits occurred among participants with, but not without, diabetes. The mechanisms through which physical activity affects physical and cognitive function in older adults may differ for individuals by diabetes status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, several medical comorbidities and a decreased life expectancy. Metabolic-inflammatory changes have been postulated as one of the main links between BD and medical comorbidity, although there are few studies exploring possible mechanisms underlying this relationship. Therefore, the aims of the current narrative review were 1) synthesize the evidence for metabolic-inflammatory changes that may facilitate the link between medical comorbidity and BD and 2) discuss therapeutic and preventive implications of these pathways. METHODS The PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched for relevant studies. RESULTS Identified studies suggested that there is an increased risk of medical comorbidities, such as autoimmune disorders, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease in patients with BD. The association between BD and general medical comorbidities seems to be bidirectional and potentially mediated by immune dysfunction. Targeting the metabolic-inflammatory-mood pathway may potential yield improved outcomes in BD; however, further study is needed to determine which specific interventions may be beneficial. LIMITATIONS The majority of identified studies had cross-sectional designs, small sample sizes and limited measurements of inflammation. CONCLUSIONS Treatment and prevention of general medical comorbidities in mood disorders should include preferential prescribing of metabolically neutral agents and adjunctive lifestyle modifications including increased physical activity, improved diet and decreased substance abuse. In addition, the use of anti-inflammatory agents could be a relevant therapeutic target in future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As the world population ages, patients older than 80 years, known as very elderly, are more frequently found. There are no studies in this age group aimed at analyzing the multidisciplinary intervention in the treatment of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) and some comorbidities. OBJECTIVES To assess the effect of a multidisciplinary approach in very elderly hypertensives cared for at a specialized service. METHODS Longitudinal retrospective cohort study in a multidisciplinary service specialized in the SAH treatment in the Brazilian West-Central region. Patients aged 80 years and older by June 2015 were included. Data from the first (V1) and last visit (Vf) were assessed. Anthropometric variables, blood pressure (BP), renal function, pharmacological treatment, lifestyle, comorbidities and cardiovascular events were studied, comparing data from V1 and Vf. Controlled BP was defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) lower than 140 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) lower than 90 mm Hg. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSSR software, version 21.0. Values of p<0,05 were considered significant. RESULTS Data of 71 patients were assessed with a mean follow-up time of 15,22 years. Their mean age at V1 was 69.2 years, and, at Vf, 84.53 years, and 26.8% of them were males. There was a significant reduction in mean SBP (157.3 x 142.1 mm Hg; p<0.001) and DBP (95.1 x 77.8 mm Hg; p<0.001), with an increase in BP control rates from V1 to Vf (36.6 x 83.1%; p<0.001). The number of antihypertensive drugs used increased (1.49 x 2.85; p<0.001), with an increase in the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (22.5 x 46.5%; p=0.004), angiotensin II receptor blockers (4.2 x 35.2%; p<0.001) and calcium-channel blockers (18.3 x 67.6%; p<0.001). There was a reduction in total cholesterol (217.9 x 191 mg/dL; p<0.001) and LDL-cholesterol (139.6 x 119.0 mg/dL; p<0.001), but worsening of the glomerular filtration rate (62.5 x 45.4 mL/min; p<0.001). CONCLUSION The multidisciplinary intervention in very elderly hypertensives increased BP control rate, with optimization of the pharmacological treatment.

Abstract
Floorball training consists of intense repeated exercise and may offer a motivating and social stimulating team activity in elderly individuals. However, the effect of floorball training in elderly adults on physiological adaptations important for health is not known. Thus, this study examined the effect of floorball training on blood lipids, muscle strength, body composition, and functional capacity of men aged 65-76 years. Thirty-nine recreational active men were randomized into a floorball group (FG; n = 22) or petanque group (PG; n = 17), in which training was performed 1 h twice a week for 12 weeks. In FG and PG, average heart rate (HR) during training was 80% and 57%, respectively, of maximal HR. In FG, plasma low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides were 11% and 8% lower (P < 0.05), respectively. Insulin resistance determined by homeostatic model assessment (HOMA-IR) was reduced (P < 0.05) by 18%. HR during submaximal cycling was 5% lower (P < 0.05), and maximal voluntary contraction force was 8% higher (P < 0.05). Total and visceral fat content was lowered (P < 0.05) by 5% and 14%, respectively, HR at rest was 8% lower (P < 0.05) and performance in four different functional capacity tests were better (P < 0.05) after compared to before the training period. No changes were observed in PG. In conclusion, 12 weeks of floorball training resulted in a number of favorable effects important for health and functional capacity, suggesting that floorball training can be used as a health-promoting activity in elderly men.
