PVA/CS and PVA/CS/Fe gel beads' synthesis mechanism and their performance in cultivating anaerobic granular sludge

Partial nitrification-denitrification and enrichment of paracoccus induced by iron-chitosan beads addition in an intermittently-aerated activated sludge system

Insufficient carbon source has become the main limiting factor for efficient nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment. In this study, an intermittently-aerated activated sludge system with iron-chitosan (Fe-CS) beads addition was proposed for nitrogen removal from low C/N wastewater. By adding Fe-CS beads, partial nitrification-denitrification (PND) process and significant enrichment of Paracoccus (with ability of iron reduction/ammonium oxidation/aerobic denitrification) were observed in the reactor. The accumulation rate of NO2--N reached 81.9 %, and the total nitrogen removal efficiency was improved to 93.9 % by shortening the aeration time. The higher activity of ammonium oxidizing bacteria and inhibited activity of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in Fe-CS assisted system mediated the occurrence of PND. In contrast, the traditional nitrification and denitrification process occurred in the control group. The high-throughput sequencing analysis and metagenomic results confirmed that the addition of Fe-CS induced 77.8 % and 54.9 % enrichment of Paracoccus in sludge and Fe-CS beads, respectively, while almost no enrichment was observed in control group. Furthermore, with the addition of Fe-CS beads, the expression of genes related to outer membrane porin, cytochrome c, and TCA was strengthened, thereby enhancing the electron transport of Fe(Ⅱ) (electron donor) and Fe(Ⅲ) (electron acceptor) with pollutants in the periplasm. This study provides new insights into the direct enrichment of iron-reducing bacteria and its PND performance induced by the Fe-CS bead addition. It therefore offers an appealing strategy for low C/N wastewater treatment.

A highly sensitive optical fiber sensor enables rapid triglycerides-specific detection and measurement at different temperatures using convolutional neural networks

For specific recognition and sensitive detection of triglycerides (TGs), an optical fiber sensor (OFS) based on an enhanced core diameter mismatch was proposed. The sensitivity of the sensor is significantly increased due to the repetitive excitation of the higher-order cladding modes. A technique for immobilizing lipase using covalent binding technology was presented and demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The interference dip of the sensor was shifted due to TGs being hydrolyzed in the presence of lipase. The sensor shows an optimal response within 3 min and exhibits a high sensitivity of 0.9933 nm/(mg/ml) and a limit of detection of 0.0822 mg/ml in the concentration range 0-8 mg/ml at a temperature of 37 °C and a pH of 7.4. The response of the sensor to TGs concentration at different temperatures and pH was investigated. The reproducibility, reusability, and stability of the proposed sensor were tested and verified experimentally. The biosensor is highly specific for TGs and unaffected by many other interfering substances. Further, the measurement of TGs concentration at different temperatures was realized. This method provides a new way to detect TGs rapidly and reliably and has potential applications in medical research and clinical diagnosis.

Chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol-diatomite hydrogel removes methylene blue from water

Dye pollution in the aquatic environment can harm ecosystems and human health. Here, we developed a new green adsorbent by applying an improved drying process. Diatomite was embedded in a network structure formed between chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol without using any crosslinking agent to prepare chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol-diatomite hydrogel beads through alkali solidification. The beads were tested for removing a cationic dye (methylene blue (MB)) from water. The structure of the adsorbent beads was analysed using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption capacity was investigated, and the results indicated excellent MB adsorption properties. The adsorbents had a rough surface and high swelling capacity of 66.9 g/g. The maximum MB adsorption capacity was 414.70 mg/g, and the adsorption followed the Freundlich isothermal and quasi-second-order kinetic models. The adsorption was an endothermic spontaneous process governed by both intra-particle and external diffusion processes. The proposed adsorption mechanisms involved hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. These adsorbent beads have considerable application potentials owing to their high adsorption capacity, green composition, and non-polluting nature.

Hydrogel bioreactor drives Feammox and synergistically removes composite pollutants: Performance optimization, microbial communities and functional genetic differences

Mixed pollutant wastewater has been a difficult problem due to the high toxicity of water bodies and the difficulty of treatment. Rice husk biochar modified with nano-iron tetroxide (RBC-nFe3O4) by polyvinyl alcohol cross-linking internal doping was used to introduce iron-reducing bacteria Klebsiella sp. FC61 to construct a bioreactor. The results of the long-term operation of the bioreactor showed that the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and chemical oxygen demand best reached 90.18 and 98.49%, respectively. In addition, in the co-presence of Ni2+, Cd2+, and ciprofloxacin, the bioreactor was still able to remove pollutants efficiently by RBC-nFe3O4 and bio-iron precipitation inside the biocarrier. During the long-term operation, Klebsiella was always the dominant species in the bioreactor. And the sequencing data for functional prediction showed that the biocarrier contained a variety of enzymes and proteins involved in Feammox-related activities to ensure the stable and efficient operation of the bioreactor.

Argon Plasma Jet-Treated Poly (Vinyl Alcohol)/Chitosan and PEG 400 Plus Mangifera indica Leaf Extract for Electrospun Nanofiber Membranes: In Vitro Study

The wound-healing process can be disrupted at any stage due to various internal and external factors. The inflammatory stage of the process plays a vital role in determining the outcome of the wound. Prolonged inflammation due to bacterial infection can lead to tissue damage, slow healing, and complications. Wound dressings made using materials such as poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), chitosan (CS), and poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) with Mangifera extract (ME) added can help reduce infection and inflammation, creating a conducive environment for faster healing. However, creating the electrospun membrane is challenging due to balancing various forces such as rheological behavior, conductivity, and surface tension. To improve the electrospinnability of the polymer solution, an atmospheric pressure plasma jet can induce chemistry in the solution and increase the polarity of the solvent. Thus, this research aims to investigate the effect of plasma treatment on PVA, CS, and PEG polymer solutions and fabricate ME wound dressing via electrospinning. The results indicated that increasing plasma treatment time increased the viscosity of the polymer solution, from 269 mPa∙to 331 mPa∙s after 60 min, and led to an increase in conductivity from 298 mS/cm to 330 mS/cm and an increase in nanofiber diameter from 90 ± 40 nm to 109 ± 49 nm. Incorporating 1% mangiferin extract into an electrospun nanofiber membrane has been found to increase the inhibition rates of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by 29.2% and 61.2%, respectively. Additionally, the fiber diameter decreases when compared with the electrospun nanofiber membrane without ME. Our findings demonstrate that electrospun nanofiber membrane with ME has anti-infective properties and can promote faster wound healing.

Chitosan-Fe3O4 composites enhance anaerobic digestion of liquor wastewater under acidic stress

Acid stress in the anaerobic digestion process of liquor wastewater leads to low anaerobic treatment efficiency. Herein, chitosan-Fe₃O₄ was prepared, and its effects on anaerobic digestion processes under acid stress were studied. Results showed that chitosan-Fe₃O₄ increased the methanogenesis rate of anaerobic digestion of acidic liquor wastewater by 1.5-2.3 times and accelerated the restoration of acidified anaerobic systems. The analysis of sludge characteristics showed that chitosan-Fe₃O₄ promoted the secretion of proteins and humic substances in extracellular polymeric substances and increased the electron transfer activity of the system by 71.4%. Microbial community analysis indicated that chitosan-Fe₃O₄ enriched the abundance of Peptoclostridium, and Methanosaeta participated in direct interspecies electron transfer. Chitosan-Fe₃O₄ could promote the direct interspecies electron transfer pathway to maintain stable methanogenesis. These methods and results regarding the use of chitosan-Fe₃O₄ could be referred to for improving the efficiency of anaerobic digestion of high concentration organic wastewater under acid inhibition.

In-situ membrane fouling control and performance improvement by adding materials in anaerobic membrane bioreactor: A review

Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) is a promising treatment technique for various types of wastewaters, and is preferred over other conventional aerobic and anaerobic methods. However, membrane fouling is considered a bottleneck in AnMBR system, which technically blocks membrane pores by numerous inorganics, organics, and other microbial substances. Various materials can be added in AnMBR to control membrane fouling and improve anaerobic digestion, and studies reporting the materials addition for this purpose are hereby systematically reviewed. The mechanism of membrane fouling control including compositional changes in extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and soluble microbial products (SMPs), materials properties, stimulation of antifouling microbes and alteration in substrate properties by material addition are thoroughly discussed. Nonetheless, this study opens up new research prospects to control membrane fouling of AnMBR, engineered by material, including compositional changes of microbial products (EPS and SMP), replacement of quorum quenching (QQ) by materials, and overall improvement of reactor performance. Regardless of the great research progress achieved previously in membrane fouling control, there is still a long way to go for material-mediated AnMBR applications to be undertaken, particularly for materials coupling, real scale application and molecular based studies on EPSs and SMPs, which were proposed for future researches.

Application of poly (vinyl alcohol)-cryogels to immobilizing nitrifiers: Enhanced tolerance to shear stress-induced destruction and viability control

The hardness of poly (vinyl alcohol)-cryogels (PVA-CGs) was improved under three parameter conditions: 7.5 %-12.5 % PVA, 1-5 freezing-thawing cycles (FTCs), and the addition of 0 %-10 % glycerol as a cryoprotectant. This study investigated the effects of shear stress-induced destruction (SSID) on mechanical strength by inducing rapid erosion with a high frictional force. Tolerance to SSID (Tol-SSID) exhibited different sensitivities and trends depending on the above three fabrication parameters. The measured Tol-SSID exhibited consistent and inconsistent trends with tensile strength and swelling, respectively. Tol-SSID evaluation provides new insights into the practically meaningful mechanical strength of PVA-CGs against strong friction, which simulates extreme shear stress in a bioreactor. A PVA-CG with a PVA concentration of 10 % and in two FTCs resulted in Tol-SSID and tensile strength of 88.3 % and 0.59 kPa, respectively. Here, 5 % glycerol was added to maintain the bacterial respiration activity of immobilized nitrifiers of 0.097 mg-O₂/g-VSS·min and survival of 88.6 %. The continuous mode of nitrification using the optimized PVA-CG for 10 days resulted in an ammonia removal rate of 0.2173 kg-N/m³·d, which is an improvement over cases without glycerol addition: 0.1426 and 0.1472 kg-N/m³·d for PVA-CGs in two and three FTCs, respectively.

Improving the performance of coupled solid carbon source biofilm carriers through pore-forming methods

Coupled solid carbon source biofilm carriers (CCBs) was usually utilized to enhance the treatment efficiency of low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) wastewater. However, current CCBs have low carbon release capacity because of its small inner mass transfer coefficient. Therefore, this study innovatively applied pore-forming methods to modify CCBs. After orthogonal selections, two porous CCBs, which were respectively prepared through circulating freezing pore-forming method (CCB2) and ammonium bicarbonate pore-forming method (CCB3), were proposed and further applied in sequencing batch moving bed biofilm reactors (SBMBBRs). The results indicated that circulating freezing pore-forming method could improve the mechanical strength and carbon source release rate of CCBs. In addition, CCB2 could significantly enhance the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency of SBMBBRs, when compared with the non-porous CCBs (i.e., CCB1). Further biofilm and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) rate calculation attributed this enhancement to the higher biofilm amount (i.e., 0.06 g g^-1 CCB) and the higher SND rate (i.e., 33.60%). Microbial community analysis reiterated these observations that CCB2 and CCB3 could accumulate Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota and Nitrospirota, and also stimulate nitrification and denitrification associated pathways. More importantly, the cost calculation indicated CCB2 cost only 47.37% of CCB1 and 31.34% of CCB3, showing highly economic applicability. Overall, our results collectively proved that CCBs manufactured by circulating freezing pore-forming method could provide more carbon releasing points and microorganisms attaching positions, exhibiting effectively nitrogen removal when treating low C/N wastewater.

Activity enhancement and the anammox mechanism under low temperature via PVA-SA and nano Fe2O3-PVA-SA entrapped beads

Anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AAOB) have a long growth time and low activity at low temperatures. In suspended systems, sludge is easily lost, which limits the mainstream application of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox).Entrapment provides effective ideas for solving these problems. In this study, polyvinyl‑sodium alginate (PVA-SA) and nano Fe₂O₃-PVA-SA entrapment beads were prepared to discuss the effectiveness of entrapment enhanced anammox sludge at low temperatures. The differences in the entrapped beads and granules were compared to analyze the strengthening mechanism. The results show that the nitrogen removal performance of granules, PVA-SA and nano Fe₂O₃-PVA-SA entrapped beads, first decreased and then increased during the cooling and low-temperature operation. Nano Fe₂O₃-PVA-SA entrapped beads showed the smallest decline and the highest degree of recovery. Reaction metering ratio (△NO₂^--N/△NH₄⁺-N and △NO₃^--N/△NH₄⁺-N) showed that entrapment could realize Nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) inhibition and improve the activity of denitrifying bacteria (DNB) to promote the removal of total nitrogen by providing a strict anaerobic environment. The results demonstrate that entrapment is beneficial for maintaining the content of heme c, specifically, nano Fe₂O₃ can stimulate its production, and is beneficial for alleviating the reduction of hydrazine dehydrogenase (HDH) enzyme activity. The extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content and analysis showed that entrapment does not change the composition of EPS, and can maintain the EPS content. Nano Fe₂O₃ can stimulate AAOB to secrete more EPS to maintain sludge stability. From a molecular perspective, entrapment can maintain the expression of functional genes, promote the enrichment of AAOB, thus improving the nitrogen removal performance from the dual perspectives of "quality" and "quantity".

Characterization of pH-responsive high molecular-weight chitosan/poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogel prepared by gamma irradiation for localizing drug release

pH-sensitive hydrogels prepared by gamma irradiation find promising biological applications, partially, in the field of localized drug liberation. Herein, optimal conditions for fabricating high-molecular-weight chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol hybrid hydrogels using gamma irradiation at 10, 25, and 30 kGy were investigated by studying the water uptake behavior, the pore size on the surface, and thermal stability. Furthermore, the crosslinking mechanism of irradiated hydrogels was examined via solid-state 13C NMR spectrum. The swelling ratio of the gamma-irradiated CS/PVA hydrogel was pH-dependent; particularly, the hybrid hydrogel exhibited high swelling ratios under acidic conditions than those under basic conditions due to the protonation of amino groups on CS-backbone in acidic environments. In addition, amoxicillin was used as a model drug in the in vitro drug release investigations in pH-simulated gastric fluid and deionized water at 37 °C. To identify the drug release mechanism, several kinetic models composing zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, Hixson-Crowell, and Korsmeyer-Peppas models were used. The findings suggested that drug release is mediated by a non-Fickian transport mechanism.

Preparation of Needleless Electrospinning Polyvinyl Alcohol/Water-Soluble Chitosan Nanofibrous Membranes: Antibacterial Property and Filter Efficiency

Electrospinning is an efficient method of producing nanofibers out of polymers that shows a great potential for the filtration territory. Featuring water-soluble chitosan (WS-CS), a low-pollution process and a self-made needleless machine, PVA/WS-CS nanofibrous membranes were prepared and evaluated for nanofiber diameter, bacteriostatic property, filtration efficiency, pressure drop, and quality factor. Test results indicate that the minimal fiber diameter was 216.58 ± 58.15 nm. Regardless of the WS-CS concentration, all of the PVA/WS-CS nanofibrous membranes attained a high porosity and a high water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), with a pore size of 12.06–22.48 nm. Moreover, the membranes also exhibit bacteriostatic efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, an optimal quality factor of 0.0825 Pa⁻¹, and a filtration efficiency as high as 97.0%, that is 72.5% higher than that of common masks.

Unravelling capability of two-stage thermophilic anaerobic membrane bioreactors for high organic loading wastewater: Effect of support media addition and irreversible fouling

This study investigated the effects of adding polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) beads on the performance of methanogenic reactors and the fouling behavior of a two-stage thermophilic anaerobic membrane bioreactor (ThAnMBR) for treating wastewater at a feed chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 10 g/L. The PVA-added methanogenic reactor exhibited stable operation performance and offered a relatively low volatile fatty acid concentration effluent with a higher COD removal than the system without PVA addition. The predominant microbial communities in both methanogenic reactors were similar and were assigned to the genus Methanosaeta, followed by Clostridia, which was the predominant genus in the hydrolytic reactor. Ultrafiltration in the PVA-added system offered higher effluent quality and lower fouling resistance. The system was able to operate with hydraulically removable fouling, without any chemical cleaning requirements; however, an elevated flux caused the system to suffer from hydraulically irreversible fouling. PVA beads exhibit their structural stability over long-term operation.

Selection and synthesization of multi-carbon source composites to enhance simultaneous nitrification-denitrification in treating low C/N wastewater

Low carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N) wastewater is widespread and difficult to treat. To find a resolution to this issue, this study systematically evaluated the constituents of composite solid carbon (i.e., skeletons, carbon sources and crosslinking agents), and proposed a new multi-carbon source composite S1 (MCSC.S1). The effects on nitrogen removal were further determined through a sequencing batch moving bed biofilm reactor (SBMBBR). The results showed that MCSC.S1, which was composed of polyvinyl alcohol-sodium alginate (PVA-SA), corncob + poly (R-β-hydroxybutyrate) (CC + PHB), and H₃BO₃-4% CaCl₂+Na₂SO₄ had high stability and absorption. With MCSC.S1, total nitrification removal was enhanced by more than 48.56% through releasing carbon and absorbing the attached denitrifying bacteria. In addition, it was found that MCSC.S1 can simulate the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process and contribute to 29.85% of the total nitrogen removal. 16S gene-based analysis attributed this supplementary nitrogen removal to the enrichment of nitrification (i.e., Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Chloroflexi), denitrification of associated bacteria (i.e., Nitrospirota) in MCSC.S1 added reactor, and the increase in nitrogen recycling associated genes. These findings collectively demonstrate that the new MCSC.S1 could effectively enhance nitrogen removal efficiency in low C/N ratio wastewater.

Enhancing anammox resistance to low operating temperatures with the use of PVA gel beads

Low temperatures, or a sudden decrease in operating temperature, can seriously inhibit anammox activity, it is, therefore, important to maintain anammox activities at a low temperature. In this study, the use of gel beads to enhance the resistance of anammox biomass to a low temperature was investigated. The performance of three reactors: R1 without gel beads; R2 with polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS); R3 with PVA/CS/Fe, was studied and compared in a temperature transition from 35 to 8 °C. When the operating temperature was ≥25 °C, there was little difference in nitrogen removal among the three reactors. Decreasing the temperature to < 25 °C created obvious difference between R1 and R2/R3. R1 had a nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of 33.1 ± 25.3% at 10 °C, significantly lower than that of R2 (90.5 ± 2.5%) or R3 (87.7 ± 11.1%). Unclassified Candidatus Brocadiaceae was the dominant genus at 10 °C, with an abundance of 44.4, 56.5 and 58.7% in R1, R2 and R3, respectively. These differences were attributed to the use of gel beads, which promoted the granulation of both the non-immobilized sludge and the immobilized biomass, resulting in higher anammox activities in R2/R3. The non-immobilized sludge of R1 was dominated by small particles (<300 μm) at 10 °C, while in R2 and R3 large particles (1000-2000 μm) were the main components. Furthermore, the immobilized biomass on gel beads exhibited much higher anammox activity and maintained a relatively high level of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase in response to the temperature decrease. The Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ in the PVA/CS/Fe gel beads further promoted microbial aggregation and led to an improved performance in R3 compared to R2. The results of this study demonstrate an effective approach to increase anammox resistance at low operating temperatures.

Research progress on enhancing the performance of autotrophic nitrogen removal systems using microbial immobilization technology

The autotrophic nitrogen removal process has great potential to be applied to the biological removal of nitrogen from wastewater, but its application is hindered by its unstable operation under adverse environmental conditions, such as those presented by low temperatures, high organic matter concentrations, or the presence of toxic substances. Granules and microbial entrapment technology can effectively retain and enrich microbial assemblages in reactors to improve operating efficiency and reactor stability. The carriers can also protect the reactor's internal microorganisms from interference from the external environment. This article critically reviews the existing literature on autotrophic nitrogen removal systems using immobilization technology. We focus our discussion on the natural aggregation process (granulation) and entrapment technology. The selection of carrier materials and entrapment methods are identified and described in detail and the mechanisms through which entrapment technology protects microorganisms are analyzed. This review will provide a better understanding of the mechanisms through which immobilization operates and the prospects for immobilization technology to be applied in autotrophic nitrogen removal systems.

Start-Up of Chitosan-Assisted Anaerobic Sludge Bed Reactors Treating Light Oxygenated Solvents under Intermittent Operation

Quality of the granular sludge developed during the start-up of anaerobic up-flow sludge bed reactors is of crucial importance to ensure the process feasibility of treating industrial wastewater such as those containing solvents. In this study, the microbial granule formation from suspended-growth biomass was investigated in two chitosan-assisted reactors. These reactors operated mimicking industrial sites working with night closures treating a mixture of ethanol, ethyl acetate, and 1-ethoxy-2-propanol. Each reactor operated under different hydrodynamic regimes typical from UASB (R1: <0.15 m h⁻¹) and EGSB (R2: 3 m h⁻¹). High soluble COD removal efficiencies (>90%) accompanied by rapid formation of robust anaerobic granules were achieved at both up-flow velocity levels. After three weeks from the start-up, mean size diameters of 475 µm and 354 µm were achieved for R1 and R2, respectively. The performance of the process was found to be stable for the whole operational period of 106 days treating intermittent OLR up to 13 kg COD m⁻³ d⁻¹. A memory dose of chitosan at day 42 was beneficial to guarantee good quality of the granules by offsetting the negative impact of intermittent water supply on the granular size. Methanocorpusculum was identified as the dominant archaea at both up-flow velocities. Acetobacterium, Geobacter and Desulfovibrio bacteria were also abundant, demonstrating its role on the degradation of light-oxygenated solvents.

Insight: High intensity and activity carrier granular sludge cultured using polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan/iron gel beads

The newly developed carrier granular sludge (CGS) with polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) and PVA/CS/Fe gel beads assistance showed higher intensity and anammox activity than the natural granular sludge (NGS). Through comprehensive investigation, it was found: (1) the gel beads provided a stable framework of cells entangle with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to enhance the sludge intensity. In this framework, β-polysaccharides are distributed at the edge of CGS as a protection layer, α-polysaccharides and proteins are spread in the whole cross-section as backbones, and Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ in CGS-PVA/CS/Fe act as bridges to link with the negatively charged groups on bacterial surfaces and proteins. (2) The porous gel beads satisfied a relatively unimpeded mass transfer. Thus, the sludge activity, microbe's metabolism, membrane transportation and environmental adaption in CGS were apparently improved. The results improved the understanding about the advantages of the CGS and indicated their possible application in full-scale anammox processes.

Effect of steel slag in recycling waste activated sludge to produce anaerobic granular sludge

The amount of waste activated sludge (WAS) has grown dramatically in China. WAS is considered as a problematic and hazardous waste, which should be disposed in a safe and sustainable manner. In order to recycle WAS to an anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) process for anaerobic digestion, Fe powder and steel slags (rusty and clean slags) were used to enhance the granulation process. The results demonstrated that both rusty and clean slags encouraged the development of granular sludge. Adding 10 g/L clean slags could increase AnGS granulation rate by 37%. In the presence of clean slags, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) concentration in granules increased noticeably to 715 mg/g mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS). High throughput sequencing analysis exhibited more diversity and higher abundance of functional microbial communities in the batch bottle with 10 g/L clean slags. This study suggested that adding clean slags at 10 g/L dosage was a sustainable and effective method for the sludge granulation.

Granule-based immobilization and activity enhancement of anammox biomass via PVA/CS and PVA/CS/Fe gel beads

Granule-based immobilization of anammox biomass assisted by polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) and PVA/CS/Fe gel beads was studied, via the operation of three identical up-flow reactors (R1 without gel beads, R2 with PVA/CS, R3 with PVA/CS/Fe) for 203 days. In the end, the nitrogen removal rates (NRR) were 5.3 ± 0.4, 10.0 ± 0.3 and 13.9 ± 0.5 kg-N m^-3 d^-1 for R1, R2 and R3, respectively. The porous PVA/CS and PVA/CS/Fe created a suitable eco-niche for anammox bacteria to grow and attach, thus being retained in the reactor. The EPS entangles newly grown cells within the gel beads, resulting in compact aggregation. The interaction between Fe ions added to PVA/CS/Fe gel beads and negatively charged EPS groups strongly promoted granule strength and compactness. The immobilization method proposed by this study was found to effectively improve biomass retention in the reactors, which is promising for advanced anammox process applications.
