Abstract
In recent years, there has been significant interest in photocatalytic technologies utilizing semiconductors and photosensitizers responsive to solar light, owing to their potential for energy and environmental applications. Current efforts are focused on enhancing existing photocatalysts and developing new ones tailored for environmental uses. Anthraquinones (AQs) serve as redox-active electron transfer mediators and photochemically active organic photosensitizers, effectively addressing common issues such as low light utilization and carrier separation efficiency found in conventional semiconductors. AQs offer advantages such as abundant raw materials, controlled preparation, excellent electron transfer capabilities, and photosensitivity, with applications spanning the energy, medical, and environmental sectors. Despite their utility, comprehensive reviews on AQs-based photocatalytic systems in environmental contexts are lacking. In this review, we thoroughly describe the photochemical properties of AQs and their potential applications in photocatalysis, particularly in addressing key environmental challenges like clean energy production, antibacterial action, and pollutant degradation. However, AQs face limitations in practical photocatalytic applications due to their low electrical conductivity and solubility-related secondary contamination. To mitigate these issues, the design and synthesis of graphene-immobilized AQs are highlighted as a solution to enhance practical photocatalytic applications. Additionally, future research directions are proposed to deepen the understanding of AQs' theoretical mechanisms and to provide practical applications for wastewater treatment. This review aims to facilitate mechanistic studies and practical applications of AQs-based photocatalytic technologies and to improve understanding of these technologies.

Abstract
The growing utilization of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has resulted in an increase in wastewater. Herein, a new kind of organic-inorganic redox mediator membrane by immobilizing γ-FeO(OH) and aloe-emodin(AE) with the characteristic large π-conjugation anthraquinone structure on PVDF membrane was innovatively achieved. AE exhibiting both electron deficiency and redox activity possesses a co-catalyst role in degradation of tannic acid (TA), aiding in the separation of charge carriers through the sequential hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of AE. The removal rates of TA were 92.8 % in the tannic acid solution and 60.3 % in the simulated rhubarb wastewater by the AE-γ-FeO(OH) membrane under PMS+Vis conditions in 45 min. Also, they show a higher recovery of pure water flux and owning good fouling performance. Overall, this current work presents a novel approach for the design and preparation of organic-inorganic photocatalytic composite membrane using readily available natural products for the purification TCM wastewater.

Abstract
Aeromonas hydrophila can be a substantial concern, as it causes various diseases in aquaculture. An effective and green method for inhibiting A. hydrophila is urgently required. Emodin, a naturally occurring anthraquinone compound, was exploited as a photo-antimicrobial agent against A. hydrophila. At the minimum inhibitory concentration of emodin (256 mg/L) to inactivate A. hydrophilia in 30 min, an 11.32% survival rate was observed under 45 W white compact fluorescent light irradiation. In addition, the antibacterial activity under natural sunlight (0.78%) indicated its potential for practical application. Morphological observations demonstrated that the cell walls and membranes of A. hydrophila were susceptible to damage by emodin when exposed to light irradiation. More importantly, the photoinactivation of A. hydrophila was predominantly attributed to the hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals produced by emodin, according to the trapping experiment and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Finally, a light-dependent reactive oxygen species punching mechanism of emodin to photoinactivate A. hydrophila was proposed. This study highlights the potential use of emodin in sunlight-mediated applications for bacterial control, thereby providing new possibilities for the use of Chinese herbal medicine in aquatic diseases prevention.

"Five birds one stone" tri-modal monitoring driven lab-on-magnetic aptasensor for accurate pathogen detection and enhanced germicidal application. Biosens Bioelectron 2024; 248:115991. Abstract
The effective combination of ultra-precise detection and on-demand sterilization stands out as one of the most valuable antifouling methods to combat pathogenic bacteria source and ensure the environment and food safety. Herein, an innovative "five birds one stone" aptasensor has been reported. It integrates magnetic separation, tri-modal precision detection, and efficient sterilization for monitoring of Staphylococcus aureus. Firstly, as a switch of the aptasensor, aptamer-modified potassium chloride-doped carbon dots (apt/KCl@CDs) could be adsorbed onto the surface of magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotube composites (M-MWCNTs) through π-π stacking, which could be replaced by the specific binding of the target bacteria to the aptamer. The mutual interference between the nanomaterials could be eliminated by this reverse magnetosorption strategy, enhancing the test sensitivity. In addition to the fluorescence properties, the peroxidase activity possessed by apt/KCl@CDs enables the conversion of the (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine) TMB-H2O2 colorimetric system to a photothermal modal. Then, the ultra-precision detection in the assay was achieved by the fluorescence-colorimetric-photothermal tri-modal sensing from the formation of S. aureus-apt/KCl@CDs in the supernatant. Besides, the efficient sterilization could be ensured by adsorbing the apt/KCl@CDs on the surface of S. aureus, generating toxic •OH for direct attacking cells. This was the first report that was more beneficial for bacterial eradication. The detection limits of fluorescence, colorimetric and photothermal modals were 4.81 cfu/mL, 3.40 cfu/mL and 6.74 cfu/mL, respectively. The magnetic nanoplatform integrating tri-modal detection-sterilization meets the demand for highly sensitive and precise detection in different scenarios, providing immediate control for pathogens and broad application prospects.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is one of the most effective methods to remove pollutants from water. Photocatalyst is the core of photocatalysis. The composite photocatalyst combines the photosensitizer with the support and uses the photosensitivity of the photosensitizer and the stability and adsorption of the support to achieve efficient and rapid degradation of pharmaceuticals in water. In this study, natural aloe-emodin with π-conjugated structure was used as photosensitizer to react with macroporous resin polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) under mild conditions to prepare composite photocatalysts AE/PMMAs. The photocatalyst underwent photogenerated electron migration under visible light to form •O2- and holes with high oxidation activity, which could realize efficient photocatalytic degradation of ofloxacin and diclofenac sodium and showed excellent stability, recyclability and industrial feasibility. This research has developed an efficient method of composite photocatalyst and realized the application of a natural photosensitizer in pharmaceutical degradations.

Abstract
CuO/Fe3O4/GO, as a Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst, was successfully synthesized and used as a photocatalyst for removing tetracycline from aqueous solution. The CuO/Fe3O4/GO heterogeneous catalyst combines the narrow bandgap semiconductor CuO, oxygen vacancies of Fe3O4, and oxygen-containing reaction sites of GO. Without the addition of activators (persulfate or H2O2), the photocatalytic performance on decomposing tetracycline is very excellent. Compared with GO, Fe3O4, and CuO, CuO/Fe3O4/GO exhibits superior photocatalytic performance. Under visible light radiation, CuO/Fe3O4/GO generates h+ and ⋅O2-, which are the mainly responsible active groups for TC degradation. The effects of various pH, catalysts, and reuse on the degradation performance are evaluated, and the optimal conditions for CuO/Fe3O4/GO removal of tetracycline are obtained at pH 7, catalyst dosage 20 mg⋅L-1, TC at a concentration of 30 mg/L, nearly 97.3% of tetracycline is decomposed. This study has great potential in the treatment of wastewater containing various antibiotics.
