Abstract
Major depression disorder (MDD) and atopic dermatitis (AD) are distinct disorders involving immune inflammatory responses. This study aimed to investigate the comorbid relationship between AD and MDD and to identify possible common mechanisms. We obtained AD and MDD data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differential expression analysis and the Genecard database were employed to identify shared genes associated with inflammatory diseases. These shared genes were then subjected to gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses. Hub genes were selected based on the protein-protein interactions using CytoHubba, and key regulatory genes were identified through enrichment analysis. Subsequently, we conducted immune infiltration and correlation analyses of the shared genes in AD. Finally, we employed three machine learning models to predict the significance of shared genes. A total of 17 shared genes were identified in the AD_Inflammatory_MDD dataset (S100A9, PTGER2, PI3, SNCA, DAB2, PDGFA, FSTL1, CALD1, XK, UTS2, DHRS9, PARD3, NFIB, TMEM158, LIPH, RAB27B, and SH3BRL2). These genes were associated with biological processes such as the regulation of mesenchymal cell proliferation, cellular ketone metabolic processes, and glial cell differentiation. The neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, IL-17 signaling, and Rap1 signaling pathways were significantly enriched in KEGG analysis. SNCA, S100A9, SH3BGRL2, RAB27B, TMEM158, DAB2, FSTL1, CALD1, and XK were identified as hub genes contributing to comorbid AD and MDD development. The three machine learning models consistently identified SNCA and PARD3 as important biomarkers.SNCA, S100A9, SH3BGRL2, RAB27B, TMEM158, DAB2, FSTL1, CALD1, and XK were identified as significant genes contributing to the development of AD and MDD comorbidities. Immune infiltration analysis showed a notable increase in the infiltration of various subtypes of CD4 + T cells, suggesting a potential association between the development of skin inflammation and the immune response. Across different machine learning models, SNCA and PARD3 consistently emerged as important biomarkers, providing a new direction for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Following up on previous findings from the All Our Families (AOF) cohort, the current study investigated the relationship between birthing parent history of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and child atopy, including asthma, allergy, and eczema, at five years of age. Potential indirect effects were explored. Participants completed the ACEs scale, validated questionnaires of anxiety and depression symptoms, and reported on their and their children's atopic disease history. Archival analyses of AOF data (N = 3,387) was conducted using logistic regression and path analysis with counterfactually based indirect effects. Birthing parent history of ACEs was associated with an 18% increased risk of child allergy at five years (OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.20). Exploratory path analyses indicated a significant indirect effect of ACEs through birthing parent history of atopy on child asthma, allergy, and eczema at five years. There were no significant indirect effects through birthing parent symptoms of anxiety or depression during pregnancy, at two or five years postpartum. Birthing parent history of ACEs, combined with birthing parent history of atopy, may elevate the risk of child atopy. This presents an opportunity for early intervention for children at risk of atopic disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of atopic dermatitis (AD) in children is increasing. Early exposure to stress factors may be associated with the AD development. This study aimed to summarize studies that reported an association between stress exposure and AD development in later life. METHODS AND FINDINGS A comprehensive literature search was performed using online databases (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science) for articles published up to May 1, 2023. Eligible studies were screened and selected based on the inclusion criteria. We incorporated cohort or case-control studies published in English which explored the relationship between stress experienced by parents or children and AD. The pooled odds ratio (OR) was calculated according to the type of stress using a random-effects model. Twenty-two studies were included. AD was related to maternal distress (OR 1.29, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.13-1.47), maternal anxiety (OR 1.31, 95% CI: 1.18-1.46), and negative life events (OR 2.00, 95% CI: 1.46-2.76). Maternal depression during pregnancy was associated with AD (OR 1.21, 95% CI: 1.09-1.33), whereas no significant association was found for postpartum depression. Research on stress experienced by paternal or children is scare. CONCLUSIONS Early maternal stress may potentially elevate the risk of AD in their offspring. Importantly, rigorously designed studies are required to corroborate the link between maternal stress and AD in children. These studies should aim to gather insights about the impact of stress during specific trimesters of pregnancy, postnatal stress, and paternal stress, and to identify potential prevention strategies.

Abstract
Allergic and immunologic conditions, including asthma, food allergy, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis, are among the most common chronic conditions in children and adolescents that often last into adulthood. Although rare, inborn errors of immunity are life-altering and potentially fatal if unrecognized or untreated. Thus, allergic and immunologic conditions are both medical and public health issues that are profoundly affected by socioeconomic factors. Recently, studies have highlighted societal issues to evaluate factors at multiple levels that contribute to health inequities and the potential steps toward closing those gaps. Socioeconomic disparities can influence all aspects of care, including health care access and quality, diagnosis, management, education, and disease prevalence and outcomes. Ongoing research, engagement, and deliberate investment of resources by relevant stakeholders and advocacy approaches are needed to identify and address the impact of socioeconomics on health care disparities and outcomes among patients with allergic and immunologic diseases.

Abstract
Parental mental health conditions appear to contribute to the development of childhood respiratory illness. We investigated the relationship between parental mental health and childhood respiratory illness using data from a 17-center prospective cohort study of infants hospitalized with bronchiolitis between 2011 and 2014 (n = 921). Among 779 (84.6%) participants with self-reported parental mental health history data, 184 (23.6%) had parental history of depression and 155 (19.9%) had anxiety. Multivariable analyses found that both parental history of depression (hazard ratio [HR] 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.99) and anxiety (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.08-1.52) were associated with an increased risk of recurrent wheezing by age 3 years. However, only parental history of anxiety was associated with asthma by age 5 years (odds ratio 1.79, 95% CI 1.25-2.55). Further research on exposure severity, other early life stressors, and effective methods of parental psychosocial support is needed to develop targeted risk factor prevention strategies to reduce the burden of childhood respiratory illness.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To date, there is no evidence that humanity will implement appropriate mitigation measures to avoid the catastrophic impact of climate change on the planet and human health. Vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and children will be the most affected. This review highlights epidemiologic data on climate change-related prenatal environmental exposures affecting the fetus and children's respiratory health. RECENT FINDINGS Research on outcomes of prenatal exposure to climate change-related environmental changes and pediatric pulmonary health is limited. In addition to adverse pregnancy outcomes known to affect lung development, changes in lung function, increased prevalence of wheezing, atopy, and respiratory infections have been associated with prenatal exposure to increased temperatures, air pollution, and maternal stress. The mechanisms behind these changes are ill-defined, although oxidative stress, impaired placental functioning, and epigenetic modifications have been observed. However, the long-term impact of these changes remains unknown. SUMMARY The detrimental impact of the climate crisis on pediatric respiratory health begins before birth, highlighting the inherent vulnerability of pregnant women and children. Research and advocacy, along with mitigation and adaptation measures, must be implemented to protect pregnant women and children, the most affected but the least responsible for the climate crisis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies have identified maternal antenatal anxiety and several adverse birth outcomes, but limited studies have focused on the relationship with the long-term physical growth of children. The study aimed to assess the influence of maternal pregnancy-related anxiety on physical growth in children at different exposure periods during pregnancy. METHODS 3,154 mother-child pairs were included based on the Ma'anshan birth cohort study. Maternal prenatal anxiety was obtained by administering a questionnaire using the pregnancy-related anxiety questionnaire (PRAQ) scale during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy. Body fat (BF) (48 to 72 months) and Body Mass Index (BMI) (birth to 72 months) were collected repeatedly for children. Group-based trajectory models were applied to fit the different trajectories of BMI and BF. RESULTS Maternal anxiety in the 2nd (OR = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.68 to 0.98; P < 0.025) and 3rd (OR = 0.80; 95% CI: 0.67 to 0.97; P = 0.020) trimesters was associated with a decreased risk of rapid weight gain (RWG) in the first year of life. Children aged 48 to 72 months of mothers with anxiety in the 3rd trimester had lower BMI (β = -0.161; 95% CI, -0.293 to -0.029; P = 0.017) and BF (β = -0.190; 95% CI, -0.334 to -0.046; P = 0.010), and these children were less likely to develop a very high BMI trajectory (OR = 0.54; 95% CI: 0.34 to 0.84; P = 0.006), and a high BF trajectory (OR = 0.72; 95% CI: 0.53 to 0.99; P = 0.043). Similar associations were found between maternal anxiety in both 2nd and 3rd trimesters and children's physical growth. CONCLUSIONS Offspring of mothers with prenatal anxiety in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters predicts poorer growth in infancy and preschool age. Early improvement and treatment of prenatal anxiety could benefit physical health and development in early childhood.

Abstract
Air pollutants are being increasingly linked to extrapulmonary multi-organ effects. Specifically, recent studies associate air pollutants with brain disorders including psychiatric conditions, neuroinflammation and chronic diseases. Current evidence of the linkages between neuropsychiatric conditions and chronic peripheral immune and metabolic diseases provides insights on the potential role of the neuroendocrine system in mediating neural and systemic effects of inhaled pollutants (reactive particulates and gases). Autonomically-driven stress responses, involving sympathetic-adrenal-medullary and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axes regulate cellular physiological processes through adrenal-derived hormones and diverse receptor systems. Recent experimental evidence demonstrates the contribution of the very stress system responding to non-chemical stressors, in mediating systemic and neural effects of reactive air pollutants. The assessment of how respiratory encounter of air pollutants induce lung and peripheral responses through brain and neuroendocrine system, and how the impairment of these stress pathways could be linked to chronic diseases will improve understanding of the causes of individual variations in susceptibility and the contribution of habituation/learning and resiliency. This review highlights effects of air pollution in the respiratory tract that impact the brain and neuroendocrine system, including the role of autonomic sensory nervous system in triggering neural stress response, the likely contribution of translocated nano particles or metal components, and biological mediators released systemically in causing effects remote to the respiratory tract. The perspective on the use of systems approaches that incorporate multiple chemical and non-chemical stressors, including environmental, physiological and psychosocial, with the assessment of interactive neural mechanisms and peripheral networks are emphasized.

Abstract
Chronic stress at work is ubiquitous in modern societies. However, its influence on atopic dermatitis (AD) has hardly been investigated. This study aimed to elucidate the association between work-related stress and AD via a longitudinal study. The analysis comprised data from three phases (2002-2003, 2007-2009, 2017-2018) of the prospective Study on Occupational Allergy Risks (SOLAR), including 1,240 young adults aged 16 to 18 years at baseline (61% female) who were originally recruited for the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood Phase II in 1995-1996. AD was assessed at all three phases based on self-reports of a physician's diagnosis and symptoms. Work-related stress was measured at all three periods using the work discontent and work overload scales from the Trier Inventory for the Assessment of Chronic Stress with adaptions to school and university. Generalized estimating equations were used to analyze the association between stress and AD, treating work discontent and work overload first as continuous and then as categorical exposure variables. We observed 50 AD cases (4%) at SOLAR I, 48 (4%) at SOLAR II, and 42 (3%) at SOLAR III. A one-point increase in the work discontent score was associated with an odds ratio (OR) for AD of 1.05 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00-1.10). The respective increase in the work overload score led to an OR of 1.03 (95% CI, 0.99-1.06). In the categorical analysis, there was no clear indication of elevated odds of AD in the highest vs. lowest exposure group (4th vs. 1st quartile: OR, 1.53; 95% CI, 0.92-2.53 for work discontent; OR, 1.38, 95% CI, 0.83-2.27 for work overload). Altogether, we observed limited to no evidence for an association between work-related stress and AD. Our study's ability to detect stronger evidence may have been compromised by shortcomings such as nondifferential misclassification of the outcome or insufficient statistical precision due to small numbers of AD cases. Another explanation could be that AD predominantly becomes evident in childhood, not in adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies report associations between maternal mental health and adverse respiratory outcomes in children; however, the impact of timing and duration of maternal distress remains understudied. We sought to longitudinally examine associations between maternal depression and childhood asthma and wheeze, and explore sex differences. METHODS Maternal depression (n = 601) was assessed using the Edinburgh Depression Scale questionnaire, dichotomized at a clinically relevant cutoff (>12) (a) during pregnancy, (b) postpartum, and (c) postpartum and subsequent time points postnatally (recurrent depression). Report of wheeze in the past 12 months (current wheeze) and asthma were obtained using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire at 48 and 72 months. Associations were analyzed using a modified Poisson regression adjusted for covariates, and in interaction models. RESULTS Both postpartum and recurrent depression were associated with higher risk of current wheeze (relative risk [RR]: 1.87, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.21, 2.90; RR: 2.41, 95% CI: 1.53, 3.79) and asthma at 48 months (RR: 2.42, 95% CI: 1.01, 5.84; RR: 2.45, 95% CI: 1.02, 5.84). In interaction analyses, associations were stronger in females. Recurrent depression was associated with a higher risk of current wheeze at 48 months in females (RR: 4.34, 95% CI: 2.02, 9.32) when compared to males (RR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.05, 3.39). CONCLUSIONS Postpartum and recurrent depression were associated with a higher risk of wheeze and asthma in children. Understanding the temporal- and sex-specific effects of maternal depression may better inform prevention strategies.

Abstract
Background Maternal mental health problems in each of the prenatal period and postnatal period have been demonstrated as possible risk factors for atopic dermatitis (AD) in children. However, the cumulative impacts of maternal psychological distress in the prenatal and postnatal periods on AD in children remain unclear. This study examined the association between cumulative exposure to maternal psychological distress in the prenatal and postnatal periods and the development of AD in children. Methods Data were derived from the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study in Japan. In total, 8377 mother-child pairs in which the child had no AD at the age of 1 year were analyzed. Maternal psychological distress in early pregnancy and 1 year after delivery was defined as a K6 score ≥ 5, and the participants were categorized into four groups: no psychological distress in both the prenatal and postnatal periods; only the prenatal period; only the postnatal period; and both periods. The development of AD was defined as the presence of AD in a 2-year-old child without AD reported at the age of 1 year using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire. Generalized linear model analyses were conducted to examine the association between maternal psychological distress and the development of AD in children adjusted for age at delivery, educational attainment, smoking status in pregnancy, maternal history of AD, paternal history of AD, parity, maternal body mass index, and child sex. Results Between the ages of 1 and 2 years, 14.0% of children developed AD. Maternal psychological distress in both prenatal and postnatal periods was associated with an increased risk of AD in children compared to no psychological distress in both periods (relative risk (RR), 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.34, 1.20–1.47). Maternal psychological distress in only the postnatal period was associated with an increased risk of AD in children (RR, 95% CI: 1.23, 1.07–1.39), but not in only the prenatal period (RR, 95% CI: 1.14, 0.98–1.30). Conclusions Cumulative exposure to maternal psychological distress in the prenatal and postnatal periods was associated with the development of AD in children. Abstract
Background and Aims: Few studies consider the joint effect of multiple factors related to birth, delivery mode, intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis and the onset of labour, on the abundance of Bifidobacterium and the quantity of this genus and its species Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis in the infant gut microbiota. We implemented such a study. Methods: Among 1654 Canadian full-term infants, the gut microbiota of faecal samples collected at 3 months were profiled by 16S rRNA sequencing; the genus Bifidobacterium and Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis were quantified by qPCR. Associations between Bifidobacterium and other gut microbiota were examined by Spearman’s rank correlation. Results: Following vaginal birth, maternal IAP exposure was associated with reduced absolute quantities of bifidobacteria among vaginally delivered infants (6.80 vs. 7.14 log10 (gene-copies/g faeces), p < 0.05), as well as their lowered abundance relative to other gut microbiota. IAP differences in infant gut bifidobacterial quantity were independent of maternal pre-pregnancy body-mass-index (BMI), and remarkably, they were limited to breastfed infants. Pre-pregnancy BMI adjustment revealed negative associations between absolute quantities of bifidobacteria and CS with or without labour in non-breastfed infants, and CS with labour in exclusively breastfed infants. Significant correlations between Bifidobacterium abundance and other microbial taxa were observed. Conclusions: This study documented the impact of the birth mode and feeding status on the abundance of gut Bifidobacterium, and pointed to the important ecological role of the genus Bifidobacterium in gut microbiota due to its strong interaction with other gut microbiota in early infancy.

Abstract
Background Asthma is the most common respiratory disease among children, while atopic diseases such as atopic dermatitis affect about 20% of infants under 2 years of age. Studies suggested that these conditions might be related to prenatal depression or anxiety. This study aimed to explore the association between prenatal mental disorders and childhood asthma or atopic disease in a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched up to May 2020. The primary outcome was childhood asthma and childhood atopic dermatitis. Random-effects models were used because of high heterogeneity indicated by I2 > 50% and Q-test P < 0.10. Results A total of 598 studies were initially identified, but nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Prenatal mental disorder was associated with childhood asthma (n = 6 studies; ES = 1.146, 95%CI: 1.054–1.245, P = 0.001; I2 = 93.5%, Pheterogeneity < 0.001) whereas no significant association was found for childhood atopic dermatitis (n = 4 studies; ES = 1.211, 95%CI: 0.982–1.494, P = 0.073; I2 = 78.5%, Pheterogeneity < 0.001). Childhood asthma seems to be related more to depression (n = 1 study; ES = 1.170, 95%CI: 1.061–1.291, P = 0.002) and anxiety/depression (n = 4 studies; ES = 1.157, 95%CI: 1.050–1.275, P = 0.073; I2 = 95.3%, Pheterogeneity < 0.001). Conclusion This meta-analysis demonstrated that prenatal mental disorders increase the risk of childhood asthma. We limited the included samples to pregnant women to investigate the association between prenatal psychological factors and offspring’s physical health. Future studies should include large high-quality cohort studies to investigate the behavioral, environmental, and genetic causes for this association. Abstract
The infants of mothers with elevated depressive symptoms (EDS) postpartum appear to be at increased risk of somatic health problems during their first 12 months of life in low- and lower-middle-income countries. However, in higher-income countries, knowledge of this association is scarce. We sought to examine whether maternal reports of infant health problems, adherence to vaccination schedules and analgesic supply to the infant during the first 12 months of life differ between mothers with and without postpartum EDS. Altogether, 969 women who were enrolled in the Kuopio Birth Cohort study (www.kubico.fi) during 2012-2017 were included in this investigation. Depressive symptoms were measured with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale during pregnancy (1st and/or 3rd trimester) and at eight weeks postpartum. Infant health data were collected as a part of a 12-month online follow-up questionnaire for mothers and were based on self-reports of either maternal observations or physician-determined diagnoses. Postpartum EDS were associated with a 2- to 5-fold increased likelihood of abnormal crying and paroxysmal wheezing (based on parental observations), as well as gastroesophageal reflux and food allergy (based on physician-determined diagnoses). Mothers with postpartum EDS also supplied their infants with analgesic medication for longer periods. Adherence to vaccination schedules was similar between the examined groups. In conclusion, infants of mothers with postpartum EDS may be more likely to experience health problems or to be perceived by their mother as having health problems, and thus receive more medications.

Abstract
Background: Currently, most studies indicate that there is a potential link between maternal psychologic stress and the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD) in offspring. However, it is unknown which trimester of pregnancy is most sensitive to maternal stress in terms of risk of infant AD and whether the changes of maternal stress level in different trimesters of pregnancy may be associated with infant AD. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between maternal perceived stress across three trimesters of pregnancy and AD in infants at 6 months. Methods: A total of 1,638 pregnant women participated in the population-based birth cohort study. Maternal prenatal stress was assessed by self-report questionnaires during each trimester. Infant AD was diagnosed at age 6 months, according to the UK Working Party diagnostic criteria. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between maternal prenatal stress in each trimester of pregnancy and infant AD. Results: Maternal perceived stress in the 2nd trimester was associated with AD in infants at 6 months (aOR 1.56; 95% CI 1.08-2.25, P = 0.019). Furthermore, increased level of perceived stress from the 1st to the 2nd trimester (aOR 2.05, 95% CI 1.33-3.15, P = 0.001) and from the 1st to the 3rd trimester (aOR 1.92, 95% CI 1.22-3.00, P = 0.004) were also associated with the risk of infant AD at 6 months. Conclusion: A high level of maternal perceived stress in the 2nd trimester and increased level of perceived stress from the 1st to the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy may increase the risk of offspring developing AD at 6 months.
