The Influence of Parental Social-Emotional Competencies on Intergenerational Child Maltreatment: A Scoping Review

Child maltreatment is a major public and global health issue with well-documented intergenerational patterns. Social-emotional development, which is detrimentally impacted by child maltreatment, has been associated with parenting behaviors and implicated as a mechanism of intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment. This scoping review sought to synthesize information on the social-emotional skills that contribute to or protect against intergenerational maltreatment. Following the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis systematic scoping review methodology, 23 studies were identified as having met all inclusion criteria. Eligible studies were empirical, primary, peer-reviewed and published work written in English. Included studies contained a parental history of maltreatment, maltreatment or risk thereof to the child, and at least one independent parental social-emotional factor. Studies were organized, and findings were conceptually mapped according to Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) social-emotional competency domains. Key findings included determining self-management as the most well-studied CASEL competency area, whereas there was a paucity of research on relationship skills and responsible decision-making. Studies focused almost exclusively on assessing risk. The most well-documented risk factors for intergenerational maltreatment included parental emotion dysregulation, low self-control, aggression, and dissociation. Measurement and consideration of the developmental timing of maltreatment was identified as a critical oversight in the literature. Future work should explore developmentally specific models and elucidate more comprehensive profiles of social-emotional risk and resilience as a means of developing more effective prevention strategies.

Childhood maltreatment and suicide attempts: A prospective cohort study in Chinese middle school students

BACKGROUND

Suicide is a global public health crisis, and little evidence has focused on associations between suicide attempts and childhood maltreatment (CM) in Chinese middle school students.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to explore the relationship between childhood maltreatment and suicide attempts and the sex difference in Chinese middle school students.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

In this prospective cohort study, students in grades 7 and 8 filled out the questionnaire at baseline and 6-month follow-up.

METHODS

Demographic data, childhood maltreatment, and suicide attempts were surveyed. Depression, anxiety, and stress were measured at baseline as covariates. Logistic regression was employed to measure the impact of childhood maltreatment and its sex differences on suicide attempts.

RESULTS

Among 782 students, 39.6 % suffered from childhood maltreatment, and the incidence rate of suicide attempts in 6 months was 4.60 % (36/782). After controlling for covariates, childhood maltreatment (adjusted odds ratio, OR = 2.899, 95%CI = 1.349-6.227) and its subtypes, physical abuse (adjusted OR = 4.077, 95%CI = 1.593-10.505) and emotional neglect (adjusted OR = 2.179, 95%CI = 1.059-4.481) were independent risk factors of suicide attempts. The association remained significant in females but not males, while no interactions between sex and childhood maltreatment were found.

CONCLUSIONS

Childhood maltreatment was prevalent in Chinese middle school students and closely associated with the incidence of suicide attempts, which provided valuable evidence for suicide prevention.

Intergenerational transmission of childhood maltreatment and offspring behavioral adjustment problems and competence

BACKGROUND

Previous studies have consistently highlighted that exposure to childhood maltreatment adversely affects the developmental domains of subsequent generations. Little, however, is known about the relationship between maternal childhood maltreatment history and adolescent development, as well as the mediator role of offspring childhood maltreatment.

OBJECTIVE

The current study attempts to investigate the mediating role of offspring childhood maltreatment in the relationship between maternal childhood maltreatment history and offspring behavioral adjustment problems and competence.

METHODS

Participants were 1102 adolescents aged 10-15 years (Mage = 12.14, SD = 1.22) and their mothers (Mage = 39.40, SD = 5.31). Participating adolescents filled out self-report instruments assessing their childhood maltreatment by their mothers, self-esteem, academic performance, loneliness, and prosocial and aggressive behaviors between October 2018 and May 2019. In addition, we collected data from mothers on their childhood maltreatment history.

RESULTS

We analyzed the data through a structural equation model. The findings revealed insignificant direct effects of maternal childhood maltreatment history on offspring behavioral adjustment problems and competence. Yet, indirect effects demonstrated that offspring maltreatment by mothers mediated the relationship between maternal childhood maltreatment history and offspring behavioral adjustment problems and competence. Maternal childhood maltreatment history was significantly associated with offspring maltreatment (β = 0.30; p < .001), which in turn was linked to a higher level of behavioral adjustment problems (β = 0.40; p < .001) and a lower level of competence (β = -0.71; p < .001).

CONCLUSION

The research findings extend our understanding of the relationship between maternal childhood maltreatment history and offspring behavioral adjustment problems and competence, identifying the mediating role of offspring maltreatment.

Childhood trauma and alcohol misuse in college students: The moderating role of minimization

BACKGROUND

History of childhood trauma as a risk factor for alcohol misuse in early adulthood is very well documented. Given the associations between childhood trauma and alcohol misuse, more work is needed to understand the factors that influence this relationship.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between childhood trauma, minimization of such events and alcohol misuse in a French college student sample.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

A convenience sampling method was used to recruit students from several colleges located in Western France. The data set included 1180 records with complete responses.

METHODS

This study employed a cross-sectional online survey. Data collection instruments included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire Short-Form (CTQ-SF) and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT).

RESULTS

The strength of the association between CTQ score and AUDIT total score was increased by minimization score (β = 0.122, p = .07). This result suggests that under-reporting childhood trauma experiences tends to increase the impact of such events on alcohol misuse.

CONCLUSION

These findings suggest that a tendency to minimize threatening childhood events may specifically be related to increased risk of greater alcohol misuse among college students. Therefore, it may be important for clinician to assess minimization of early events in students with a history of childhood trauma.

By acknowledging the impact of childhood left-behind experience and providing appropriate support and interventions, we can help these children to heal, thrive and develop into emotionally resilient individuals.
