Carbon nanotubes buckypapers: A new frontier in wastewater treatment technology

Occurrence of contaminants in water is one of the major global concerns humanity is still facing today: most of them are extremely toxic and dangerous for human health, obliging their removal for a proper and correct process of sanitation. Among wastewater treatment technologies, in the view of development of sustainable and environmentally friendly processes, membrane adsorption has proved to be a fast and simple method in the removal of pollutants, offering great contaminants recovery percentages, fast adsorbent regeneration and recycle, and easy scale-up. Due to their large surface area and tunable chemistry, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based materials revealed to be extraordinary adsorbents, exceeding by far performances of ordinary organic and inorganic membranes such as polyethersulfone, polyvinylidene fluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene, ceramics, currently employed in membrane technologies for wastewater treatment. In consideration of this, the review aims to summarize recent developments in the field of carbon nanotubes-based materials for pollutants recovery from water through adsorption processes. After a brief introduction concerning what adsorption phenomenon is and how it is performed and governed by using carbon nanotubes-based materials, the review discusses into detail the employment of three common typologies of CNTs-based materials (CNTs powders, CNTs-doped polymeric membranes and CNTs membranes) in adsorption process for the removal of water pollutants. Particularly focus will be devoted on the emergent category of self-standing CNTs membranes (buckypapers), made entirely of carbon nanotubes, exhibiting superior performances than CNTs and CNTs-doped polymeric membranes in terms of preparation strategy, recovery percentages of pollutants and regeneration possibilities. The extremely encouraging results presented in this review aim to support and pave the way to the introduction of alternative and more efficient pathways in wastewater treatment technologies to contrast the problem of water pollution.

Activated carbon and their nanocomposites derived from vegetable and fruit residues for water treatment

Water pollution remains a pressing environmental issue, with diverse pollutants such as heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and aromatic hydrocarbon compounds posing a significant threat to clean water access. Historically, biomass-derived activated carbons (ACs) have served as effective adsorbents for water treatment, owing to their inherent porosity and expansive surface area. Nanocomposites have emerged as a means to enhance the absorption properties of ACs, surpassing conventional AC performance. Biomass-based activated carbon nanocomposites (ACNCs) hold promise due to their high surface area and cost-effectiveness. This review explores recent advancements in biomass-based ACNCs, emphasizing their remarkable adsorption efficiencies and paving the way for future research in developing efficient and affordable ACNCs. Leveraging real-time communication for ACNC applications presents a viable approach to addressing cost concerns.

Sustainable synthesis of magnetic Sargassum siliquastrum activated carbon loaded with NiS nanorods for adsorption of 2,4-D herbicide

The upgrade of sustainable resource waste into a valuable and beneficial material is an urgent task. The current paper outlines the development of an economical, sustainable, and prolonged adsorbent derived from Sargassum siliquastrum biomass and its use for potent 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) removal. A simple carbonization approach was applied to obtain the highly functionalized carbon structure, which was subsequently transformed into a novel magnetic nanoadsorbent. The magnetic nanoadsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET)-specific surface area, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The characterization results confirm the successful formation of a high specific surface area and a uniform distribution of Fe3O4/NiS NPs grafted activated carbon. The adsorption kinetics was more accurately described via the pseudo-second order model; nevertheless, the isothermal data showed that the Langmuir model was most suitable. The monolayer adsorption capacity for 2,4-D was 208.26 ± 15.75 mg/g at 328 K. The favourability and spontaneity of the adsorption process were demonstrated by thermodynamic studies. The adsorbent displayed exceptional selectivity for 2,4-D and high stability in multi-cycle use. Electrostatic attraction, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonding were all believed to have an impact on the sorbent's robust 2,4-D adsorption. Analyses of real tap and Nile River water samples showed little effect of the sample matrix on 2,4-D adsorption. This study presents an innovative approach for developing highly efficient adsorbent from natural biomass and offers an affordable way to recycle algal waste into beneficial materials.

Engineering of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks based on magnetic three-dimensional graphene as effective and reusable adsorbent to enhance the adsorption and removal of caffeine from tea samples

As more and more adverse health effects of caffeine are being discovered, decaffeinated drinks are receiving increasing attention. In this work, a magnetic imidazole zeolite backbone compounded with three-dimensional graphene was successfully synthesized as a solid adsorbent using a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, which can rapidly and effectively adsorb caffeine from tea. Meanwhile, the structure and properties of caffeine in tea were investigated by various physicochemical characterization tools. The analytical data showed that Fe3O4@3DGA@ZIF-8 had a specific surface area of 162.9754 m2/g and an adsorption capacity of up to 19.57 mg/g with a maximum adsorption rate of 96.55%, which could be maintained with good adsorption repeated utilization three times. The adsorption isotherm and the adsorption kinetic better fit with the Langmuir model and the preudo-second order kinetic model, respectively. Therefore, Fe3O4@3DGA@ZIF-8 is a good magnetic adsorbent for the separation and the effective removal of caffeine from tea sample.

Heterogeneous porous biochar-supported nano NiFe2O4 for efficient removal of hazardous antibiotic from pharmaceutical wastewater

Due to the dual issues of antibiotic resistance and bioaccumulation toxicity, antibiotics are ubiquitously present in aquatic environments, and this is causing serious concern. Herein, novel nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto activated biochar (BC) derived from banana peel (BP) to obtain magnetic nanocomposite (BC-NiFe2O4) as an effective biosorbent for the ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CIP) elimination from pharmaceutical effluent. A facile co-precipitation approach was utilized to construct the heterogeneous BC-NiFe2O4. The synthesized materials were systematically characterized using techniques such as XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, HR-TEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS. In addition, the magnetic measurements indicated the ferromagnetic behavior of the BC-NiFe2O4 sample. The influencing factors (i.e., pH, contact time, initial concentration, dose of adsorbent, ions interference, and solution temperature) of the adsorption process were also well studied. The adsorption capacity of the BC-NiFe2O4 heterostructure was 68.79 mg g-1 compared to the BC sample (35.71 mg g-1), confirming that the loading of magnetically NiFe2O4 nanoparticles onto the surface of porous biochar enhanced its stability and adsorption performance for CIP removal, wherein the metal-antibiotic complex has a significant effect for the removal of CIP. Moreover, the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the pseudo-second-order model displayed a good fit for the experimental data. The values of △H° and △G° revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The coordination affinities, π-π stacking, and H-bonding interactions play a more critical role in the adsorption mechanism that confirmed by FTIR and XPS analysis. To study the stability of BC-NiFe2O4 nanocomposites, desorption and recycling studies were investigated. The results revealed that after three cycles, no significant loss in removal efficiency was detected, reflecting the stability and reusability of the prepared BC-NiFe2O4 nanocomposite.

Study of the Efficiency of a Polycation Using the Diafiltration Technique in the Removal of the Antibiotic Oxytetracycline Used in Aquaculture

The presence of antibiotics in aquatic systems in recent years has become a global environmental and public health concern due to the appearance of strains resistant to these antibiotics. Oxytetracycline (OXT) is a high-impact antibiotic used for both human and veterinary consumption, and it is the second most used antibiotic in aquaculture in Chile. Based on the above, this problem is addressed using a linear polymer whose structure is composed of aromatic rings and quaternary ammonium groups, which will help enhance the removal capacity of this antibiotic. To obtain the polycation, a radical polymerization synthesis was carried out using (4-vinylbenzyl)-trimethylammonium chloride as the monomer. The polycation was characterized via Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The removal studies were conducted under different experimental conditions such as pH levels (3.0, 5.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 11.0), ionic strength (0.0-0.50 mg L-1 of NaCl), polymer dose (0.25-25.5 mg), variation of the antibiotic concentration (1-100 mg L-1), and evaluation of the maximum retention capacity, as well as load and discharge studies. The antibiotic retention removal was higher than 80.0%. The antibiotic removal performance is greatly affected by the effect of pH, ionic strength, molar ratio, and/or OXT concentration, as these parameters directly affect the electrostatic interactions between the polymer and the antibiotics. The diafiltration technique was shown to be highly efficient for the removal of OXT, with maximum removal capacities of 1273, 966, and 778 mg OXT g-1 polycation. In conclusion, it can be said that coupling water-soluble polymers to the diafiltration technique is an excellent low-cost way to address the problem of antibiotics in aquatic systems.

Design of a New Phthalocyanine-Based Ion-Imprinted Polymer for Selective Lithium Recovery from Desalination Plant Reverse Osmosis Waste

In this study, a novel technique is introduced that involves the combination of an ion-imprinted polymer and solid-phase extraction to selectively adsorb lithium ions from reverse osmosis brine. In the process of synthesizing ion-imprinted polymers, phthalocyanine acrylate acted as the functional monomer responsible for lithium chelation. The structural and morphological characteristics of the molecularly imprinted polymers and non-imprinted polymers were assessed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The adsorption data for Li on an ion-imprinted polymer showed an excellent fit to the Langmuir isotherm, with a maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 3.2 mg·g-1. Comprehensive chemical analyses revealed a significant Li concentration with a higher value of 45.36 mg/L. Through the implementation of a central composite design approach, the adsorption and desorption procedures were systematically optimized by varying the pH, temperature, sorbent mass, and elution volume. This systematic approach allowed the identification of the most efficient operating conditions for extracting lithium from seawater reverse osmosis brine using ion-imprinted polymer-solid-phase extraction. The optimum operating conditions for the highest efficiency of adsorbing Li+ were determined to be a pH of 8.49 and a temperature of 45.5 °C. The efficiency of ion-imprinted polymer regeneration was evaluated through a cycle of the adsorption-desorption process, which resulted in Li recoveries of up to 80%. The recovery of Li from the spiked brine sample obtained from the desalination plant reverse osmosis waste through the ion-imprinted polymer ranged from 62.8% to 71.53%.

Recent perspective of antibiotics remediation: A review of the principles, mechanisms, and chemistry controlling remediation from aqueous media

Antibiotic pollution is an ever-growing concern that affects the growth of plants and the well-being of animals and humans. Research on antibiotics remediation from aqueous media has grown over the years and previous reviews have highlighted recent advances in antibiotics remediation technologies, perspectives on antibiotics ecotoxicity, and the development of antibiotic-resistant genes. Nevertheless, the relationship between antibiotics solution chemistry, remediation technology, and the interactions between antibiotics and adsorbents at the molecular level is still elusive. Thus, this review summarizes recent literature on antibiotics remediation from aqueous media and the adsorption perspective. The review discusses the principles, mechanisms, and solution chemistry of antibiotics and how they affect remediation and the type of adsorbents used for antibiotic adsorption processes. The literature analysis revealed that: (i) Although antibiotics extraction and detection techniques have evolved from single-substrate-oriented to multi-substrates-oriented detection technologies, antibiotics pollution remains a great danger to the environment due to its trace level; (ii) Some of the most effective antibiotic remediation technologies are still at the laboratory scale. Thus, upscaling these technologies to field level will require funding, which brings in more constraints and doubts patterning to whether the technology will achieve the same performance as in the laboratory; and (iii) Adsorption technologies remain the most affordable for antibiotic remediation. However, the recent trends show more focus on developing high-end adsorbents which are expensive and sometimes less efficient compared to existing adsorbents. Thus, more research needs to focus on developing cheaper and less complex adsorbents from readily available raw materials. This review will be beneficial to stakeholders, researchers, and public health professionals for the efficient management of antibiotics for a refined decision.

Solvatochromism as a Novel Tool to Enumerate the Optical and Luminescence Properties of Plastic Waste Derived Carbon Nanodots and Their Activated Counterparts

Herein, we have developed a one-pot methodology to synthesise three types of C-dots and their activated counterparts from three different types of waste plastic precursors such as poly-bags, cups and bottles. The optical studies have shown the significant change in the absorption edge in case of C-dots in comparison to their activated counterparts. The respective variation in the sizes is correlated with the change in electronic band gap values of formed particles. The changes in the luminescence behaviour are also correlated with transitions from the edge of the core of formed particles. The obtained variations in the Stokes shift values of C-dots, and their ACs were used to explore the types of surface states and their related transitions in particles. The mode of interaction between C-dots and their ACs was also determined using solvent-dependent fluorescence spectroscopy. This detailed investigation could provide significant insight on the emission behaviour and the potential usage of formed particles as an effective fluorescent probe in sensing applications.

Chitosan/lemon residues activated carbon efficiently removal of acid red 18 from aqueous solutions: batch study, isotherm and kinetics

In this research, chitosan-decorated activated carbon (AC-CS) was proposed. The AC was cross-linked with glutaraldehyde to prepare an adsorbent (AC-CS). The AC-CS has a rough surface. Adding the AC-CS directly to the dye solution can achieve simple and convenient removal of anionic azo dyes acid red 18 (AR-18). In the dye solution, the AC-CS was used as an adsorbent. The effects of pH, contact time, temperature, initial concentration of AR-18 and the AC-CS dosage on the adsorption efficiency were investigated. Full kinetic and isotherm analyses were also undertaken. In addition, the reusability of the AC-CS was evaluated, and the results showed that the removal rate of AR18 after regeneration remained relatively stable, above 90%. This experiment has shown that AC-CS is a promising anionic azo dye adsorbent.

Synthesis of polydopamine modified MgAl-LDH for high efficient Cr(VI) removal from wastewater

A highly efficient absorbent was developed in this study by modifying polydopamine film on Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (PDA/MgAl-LDH) to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. The characterization results showed that the polydopamine film was successfully coated on the MgAl-LDH surface. The preparation ratio, pH, and adsorbent dosage influencing absorption by PDA/MgAl-LDH were systematically investigated. The absorption capacity of Cr(VI) by PDA/MgAl-LDH was 87 mg/g. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm of PDA/MgAl-LDH was in good agreement with that of the Langmuir model. Therefore, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model is suitable for describing adsorption kinetics. The interaction between PDA and Cr(VI) and Cr(III) was investigated using density generalized function theory (DFT), which demonstrated that the PDA amino group could provide electrons for Cr(VI) reduction. Hydrogen and covalent bonding were dominant during the chemisorption process of PDA absorbing Cr(VI), the nitrogen of 5,6-dihydroxyindole was the primary active site for absorbing Cr(III), and electrostatic attraction was mainly responsible for Cr(III) absorption. Therefore, PDA/MgAl-LDH has the potential to adsorb and remove Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Recent advances in biopolymer-based advanced oxidation processes for dye removal applications: A review

Over the past few years, synthetic dye-contaminated wastewater has attracted considerable global attention due to the low biodegradability and the ability of organic dyes to persist and remain toxic, causing numerous health and environmental concerns. As a result of the recalcitrant nature of those complex organic dyes, the remediation of wastewater using conventional wastewater treatment techniques is becoming increasingly challenging. In recent years, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have emerged as a potential alternative to treat organic dyestuffs discharged from industries. The most widely employed AOPs include photocatalysis, ozonation, Fenton oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, catalytic heterogeneous oxidation, and ultrasound irradiation. These processes involve the generation of highly reactive radicals to oxidize organic dyes into innocuous minerals. However, many conventional AOPs suffer from several setbacks, including the high cost, high consumption of reagents and substrates, self-agglomeration of catalysts, limited reusability, and the requirement of light, ultrasound, or electricity. Therefore, there has been significant interest in improving the performance of conventional AOPs using biopolymers and heterogeneous catalysts such as metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs). Biopolymers have been widely considered in developing green, sustainable, eco-friendly, and low-cost AOP-based dye removal technologies. They inherit intriguing properties like biodegradability, renewability, nontoxicity, relative abundance, and sorption. In addition, the immobilization of catalysts on biopolymer supports has been proven to possess excellent catalytic activity and turnover numbers. The current review provides comprehensive coverage of different AOPs and how efficiently biopolymers, including cellulose, chitin, chitosan, alginate, gelatin, guar gum, keratin, silk fibroin, zein, albumin, lignin, and starch, have been integrated with heterogeneous AOPs in dye removal applications. This review also discusses the general degradation mechanisms of AOPs, applications of biopolymers in AOPs and the roles of biopolymers in AOPs-based dye removal processes. Furthermore, key challenges and future perspectives of biopolymer-based AOPs have also been highlighted.

Olive mill wastewater from a liquid biological waste to a carbon/oxocalcium composite for selective and efficient removal of methylene blue and paracetamol from aqueous solution

In this study, a Carbon/Oxocalcium was prepared from olive mill wastewater and successfully applied to the removal of paracetamol and methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous medium. The optimized composite (0.3 % CaO) is rich in anionic sites, porous and has a specific surface area of about 1383 m².g^-1. Adsorption tests showed significant adsorption capacities up to 1141 mg.g^-1. The adsorption of MB and paracetamol is well described by the Redlich-Peterson and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics fitted to pseudo-second order. The π -π interactions, hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions were responsible for the adsorption of paracetamol and MB substrates. This work develops by a single, easy and simple action a new effective and selective material for the removal of emerging pollutants, a new method for the development of more stable carbon composites and a cost-effective method for the valorization of olive mill wastewater.

A review on activated carbon modifications for the treatment of wastewater containing anionic dyes

Polluted water resources, particularly those polluted with industrial effluents' dyes, are carcinogenic and hence pose a severe threat to sustainable and longstanding worldwide development. Meanwhile, adsorption is a promising process for polluted/wastewater treatment. In particular, activated carbon (AC) is popular among various wastewater treatment adsorbents, especially in the organic contaminants' remediation in wastewater. Hence, the AC's synthesis from degradable and non-degradable resources, the carbon activation involved in the AC synthesis, and the AC's modification to cutting-edge and effective materials have been modern-research targets in recent years. Likewise, the main research focuses worldwide have been the salient AC characteristics, such as its surface chemistry, porosity, and enhanced surface area. Notably, various modified-AC synthesis methods have been employed to enhance the AC's potential for improved contaminants-removal. Hence, we critically analyze the different modified ACs (with enhanced (surface) functional groups and textural properties) of their capacity to remove different-natured anionic dyes in wastewater. We also discuss the corresponding AC modification techniques, the factors affecting the AC properties, and the modifying agents' influence on the AC's morphological/adsorptive properties. Finally, the AC research of future interest has been proposed by identifying the current AC research gaps, especially related to the AC's application in wastewater treatment.

Recent advances on botanical biosynthesis of nanoparticles for catalytic, water treatment and agricultural applications: A review

Green synthesis of nanoparticles using plant extracts minimizes the usage of toxic chemicals or energy. Here, we concentrate on the green synthesis of nanoparticles using natural compounds from plant extracts and their applications in catalysis, water treatment and agriculture. Polyphenols, flavonoid, rutin, quercetin, myricetin, kaempferol, coumarin, and gallic acid in the plant extracts engage in the reduction and stabilization of green nanoparticles. Ten types of nanoparticles involving Ag, Au, Cu, Pt, CuO, ZnO, MgO, TiO₂, Fe₃O₄, and ZrO₂ with emphasis on their formation mechanism are illuminated. We find that green nanoparticles serve as excellent, and recyclable catalysts for reduction of nitrophenols and synthesis of organic compounds with high yields of 83-100% and at least 5 recycles. Many emerging pollutants such as synthetic dyes, antibiotics, heavy metal and oils are effectively mitigated (90-100%) using green nanoparticles. In agriculture, green nanoparticles efficiently immobilize toxic compounds in soil. They are also sufficient nanopesticides to kill harmful larvae, and nanoinsecticides against dangerous vectors of pathogens. As potential nanofertilizers and nanoagrochemicals, green nanoparticles will open a revolution in green agriculture for sustainable development.

Recovery, regeneration and sustainable management of spent adsorbents from wastewater treatment streams: A review

Adsorption is the most widely adopted, effective, and reliable treatment process for the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater. One of the major issues with the adsorption-treatment process for the removal of contaminants from wastewater streams is the recovery and sustainable management of spent adsorbents. This review focuses on the effectiveness of emerging adsorbents and how the spent adsorbents could be recovered, regenerated, and further managed through reuse or safe disposal. The critical analysis of both conventional and emerging adsorbents on organic and inorganic contaminants in wastewater systems are evaluated. The various recovery and regeneration techniques of spent adsorbents including magnetic separation, filtration, thermal desorption and decomposition, chemical desorption, supercritical fluid desorption, advanced oxidation process and microbial assisted adsorbent regeneration are discussed in detail. The current challenges for the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents and the methodologies used for solving those problems are covered. The spent adsorbents are managed through regeneration for reuse (such as soil amendment, capacitor, catalyst/catalyst support) or safe disposal involving incineration and landfilling. Sustainable management of spent adsorbents, including processes involved in the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents for reuse, is examined in the context of resource recovery and circular economy. Finally, the review ends with the current drawbacks in the recovery and management of the spent adsorbents and the future directions for the economic and environmental feasibility of the system for industrial-scale application.

Adsorption removal and photocatalytic degradation of azithromycin from aqueous solution using PAC/Fe/Ag/Zn nanocomposite

The improper use of antibiotics and their discharge into the environment can have serious and hazardous consequences. The purpose of this research is to synthesize an activated carbon impregnated magnetite composite (PAC/Fe), prepare PAC/Fe/Ag/Zn nanocomposites, and innovate by simultaneously synthesizing two metals, zinc and silver, on magnetically activated carbon and check its ability to remove azithromycin antibiotic (AZT) from an aqueous solution via UV system. PAC/Fe/Ag/Zn nanocomposites were characterized by various techniques including XRD, FESEM, and EDX. A series of batch experiments were carried out under various experimental conditions such as pH of the solution (3-11), contact time (0-120 min), initial concentration of AZT (10-40 ppm), amount of PAC/Fe/Ag/Zn nano-absorbent (0.01-0.04 g/l), and recoverability and reuse. Some common isotherm models were used for the study of AZT adsorption removal and finding the best model. Also, kinetic studies of AZT removal were performed by fitting the experimental data on first-order and second-order models. In this system, under optimal conditions of pH = 9, 120 min with 0.04 g/l of PAC/Fe/Ag/Zn, 99.5% of 10 ppm AZT were degraded under UV-C irradiation. Furthermore, the obtained results of isotherm and kinetic studies revealed that Langmuir (R² = 0.9336) isotherm model, and the pseudo-first-order kinetic model (R² = 0.9826) had the highest correlation with the experimental data of AZT antibiotic adsorption. Finally, the reusability experiments showed that PAC/Fe/Ag/Zn nanocomposites have a high ability of antibiotic adsorption and high stability after four cycles of application (99.5 to 40%).

Activated multi-walled carbon nanotubes decorated with zero valent nickel nanoparticles for arsenic, cadmium and lead adsorption from wastewater in a batch and continuous flow modes

Nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) supported on activated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as an adsorbent applied towards Pb(II), As(V) and Cd(II) remediation from industrial wastewater. The result revealed the hydrophilic surface of MWCNTs-KOH was enhanced with the incorporation of NiNPs enabling higher surface area, functional groups and pore distribution. Comparatively, the removal of Pb(II), As(V) and Cd(II) on the various adsorbents was reported as NiNPs (58.6 ± 4.1, 46.8 ± 3.7 and 40.5 ± 2.5%), MWCNTs-KOH (68.4 ± 5.0, 65.5 ± 4.2 and 50.7 ± 3.4%) and MWCNTs-KOH@NiNPs (91.2 ± 8.7, 88.5 ± 6.5 and 80.6 ± 5.8%). Using MWCNTs-KOH@NiNPs, the maximum adsorption capacities of 481.0, 440.9 and 415.8 mg/g were obtained for Pb(II), As(V) and Cd(II), respectively. The experimental data were best suited to the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic model. The fitness of experimental data to the kinetic models in a fixed-bed showed better fitness to Thomas model. The mechanism of metal ion adsorption onto MWCNTs-KOH@NiNPs show a proposed electrostatic attraction, surface adsorption, ion exchange, and pore diffusion due to the incorporated NiNPs. The nanocomposite was highly efficient for 8 adsorption cycles. The results of this study indicate that the synthesized nanocomposite is highly active with capacity for extended use in wastewater treatment.

Mussel-inspired triple bionic adsorbent: Facile preparation of layered double hydroxide@polydopamine@metal-polyphenol networks and their selective adsorption of dyes in single and binary systems

To effectively address the serious human health challenges and ecological damage caused by organic dyes in wastewater, we developed a novel bionic adsorbent (LDH@PDA@MPNs) for the selective adsorption and removal of malachite green (MG) and crystalline violet (CV). The adsorbent was prepared using a facile two-step method based on mussel-inspired chemistry and metal complexation. The physicochemical structure, surface morphology, and composition of the LDH@PDA@MPNs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Adsorption of MG and CV with the LDH@PDA@MPNs was evaluated. Under optimal conditions, the maximum adsorption of MG and CV by the adsorbent was 89.608 and 40.481 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics showed that the experimental data were in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the equilibrium adsorption isotherm data fitted well with the Freundlich model. The thermodynamic results indicated that the adsorption of the dyes on LDH@PDA@MPNs was a spontaneous endothermic process. Importantly, the bionic adsorbent not only shows high removal efficiency by easy regeneration with low-cost reagents but also exhibits high selectivity for dyes in both single and binary systems. Therefore, LDH@PDA@MPNs have the potential to adsorb and remove dyes from complex wastewater solutions.

Oxytetracycline Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions on Commercial and High-Temperature Modified Activated Carbons

The aim of the work was to evaluate the possibility of using commercial and modified activated carbons for the removal of oxytetracycline from aqueous solutions. The kinetics and statics of adsorption as well as the effect of the activated carbon dose and solution pH on the efficiency of the oxytetracycline adsorption were analyzed. Based on the study of oxytetracycline adsorption isotherms, the activated carbons were ranked in the following order: F-300 > WG-12 > Picabiol > ROW08 > WACC 8 × 30 > F-100 > WAZ 0.6–2.4. The most effective activated carbons were characterized by large specific surfaces. The best matching results were obtained for: Redlich–Peterson, Thot and Jovanovic models, and lower for the most frequently used Freundlich and Langmuir models. The adsorption proceeded better from solutions with pH = 6 than with pH = 3 and 10. Two ways of modifying activated carbon were also assessed. A proprietary method of activated carbon modification was proposed. It uses the heating of activated carbon as a result of current flow through its bed. Both carbons modified at 400 °C in the rotary kiln and on the proprietary SEOW (Joule-heat) modification stand enabled to obtain adsorbents with higher and comparable monolayer capacities. The advantage of the proposed modification method is low electricity consumption.

Preparation and Kinetic Studies of Cross-Linked Chitosan Beads Using Dual Crosslinkers of Tripolyphosphate and Epichlorohydrin for Adsorption of Methyl Orange

Preparation of cross-linked chitosan beads using dual crosslinkers of tripolyphosphate (TPP) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) for the adsorption and kinetic studies of methyl orange (MO) had been carried out. FTIR spectra showed that TPP could act as the protecting agent of the NH₂ group of chitosan and ECH reacted with the primary hydroxyl group of chitosan. Various concentrations of TPP, ECH, and immersing time in the TPP solution for bead formation were studied. The effect of pH and kinetics of adsorption were investigated to define the mechanism of adsorption and rate-limiting step. As a result, pH 3, 10% (w/v) TPP, 5% (v/v) ECH, and 12 h immersing time in TPP were selected as the optimum conditions for preparing the beads as indicated by the highest adsorption amount of MO. The cross-linked chitosan beads' adsorption capacity for MO under optimum condition was found to be 79.55 mg/g with the adsorption rate constant (k) of 1.29 × 10⁻³/min. Furthermore, it was found that a low concentration of ECH could maintain the stability of chitosan in acidic conditions, whereas the concentration of TPP and immersing time controlled pore size and morphology of chitosan beads. The mechanism of adsorption of MO was controlled by the pore and rigidity of cross-linked chitosan beads. Bulk diffusion acted as a rate-limiting step, and a high concentration of MO inhibited diffusion and adsorption itself.
