Abstract
Perylene diimide (PDI), initially synthesized and explored as an organic dye, has since gained significant recognition for its outstanding optical and electronic properties. Early research primarily focused on its vibrant coloration; however, the resolution of solubility challenges has revealed its broader potential. PDIs exhibit exceptional optical characteristics, including strong absorption and high fluorescence quantum yield, along with remarkable electronic properties, such as high electron affinity and superior charge carrier mobility. Furthermore, the robust π-π stacking interactions and liquid crystalline behavior of PDIs facilitate precise their self-assembly into highly ordered structures, positioning them as valuable materials for advanced applications in optoelectronics, photonics, and nanotechnology. This article provides a comprehensive review of the progress made in the design, synthesis, and optoelectronic performance of PDI-based liquid crystals. It explores how various substituents and their placement on the PDI core impact the properties of these liquid crystal molecules and discusses the challenges and opportunities that shape this rapidly evolving class of optical materials. This review is strictly focused on PDIs and does not cover their elongated or laterally extended derivatives, nor does it include monoimide or ester compounds.

Abstract
Chromic molecules change colour in response to external stimuli and are utilized in applications such as food additive detection, light dimmers, and biological probes. One of the common design strategies for organic chromic molecules is based on changes in the π-conjugation. We have hypothesized that non-alternant polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) skeletons can be used as backbones for chromic molecules. Herein, we synthesized hydroxy-substituted dibenzo[j,l]fluoranthenes, a class of non-alternant PAHs, as novel chromic compounds and evaluated their halochromic properties by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Under basic conditions, the 1-hydroxy derivatives show a hyperchromic shift, whereas the 9-hydroxy derivatives show a bathochromic shift and fluorescence although the skeleton of the chromophore is the same. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the different chromic properties are attributed to the differences in their resonance structures.

Abstract
AIE-active dyes have lately received considerable attention due to their versatile applications, especially in bioimaging and theranostics. Herein, 6-methoxy-2-naphthaldehyde was used to construct fluorophores through Knoevenagel condensation with various active methylene compounds. All the obtained compounds showed varying degrees of AIE characteristics. It was worth mentioning that the condensation product of 6-methoxy-2-naphthaldehyde and malononitrile (MOP-e) exhibited a large redshift and a large Stokes shift when forming aggregates. Furthermore, it showed an ultra-wide AIE band which enabled it to be utilized for dual-channel bioimaging. The single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that two different molecular arrangement modes, the monomolecular stacking and the discrete π-π dimeric stacking, existed in the aggregates of MOP-e. The discrete dimeric stacking leads to excimer-induced enhanced emission, which results in its unique AIE behavior. Moreover, MOP-e displayed an excellent bioimaging performance in living cells in green channel and in red channel respectively.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging effective strategy for cancer treatment. Compared with conventional cancer therapies, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, PDT has shown great promise as a next-generation cancer therapeutic strategy owing to its many advantages such as non-invasiveness, negligible observed drug resistance, localized treatment, and fewer side effects. One of the key elements in photodynamic therapy is the photosensitizer (PS) which converts photons into active cytotoxic species, namely, reactive oxygen species (ROS). An ideal PS for photodynamic therapy requires the efficient generation of ROS, high stability against photo bleaching, and robust performance in different environments and concentrations. PSs with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics have drawn significant attention, in that they can overcome the aggregation- caused quenching effect that is commonly seen in the case of fluorescence dyes and provide excellent performance at high concentrations or in their condensed state. Moreover, organic nanomaterials with AIE characteristics, or AIE dots, have played an increasingly significant role in assisting PDT based on its excellent ROS generation efficiency and simultaneous imaging feature. This review summarizes the recent advances on the molecular design of AIE PSs and AIE dots-based probes, as well as their emerging applications for enhanced anticancer PDT theranostics.

Abstract
Biocompatible luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have several applications in the biology field, such as in detecting biomacromolecules bioprobes and in bio-imaging. Due to their bioactivities and light-emitting properties, many heterocyclic compounds are good candidates for such applications. However, heterocyclic π-conjugated systems with AIE behavior remain rare as strong intermolecular π-π interactions usually quench their emission. In this work, new thienopyrimidine heterocyclic compounds were synthesized and their structures were verified by elemental analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and 13C NMR spectra. The photophysical properties of some compounds were investigated in the solution and solid states. Density functional theory calculations were also performed to confirm the observed photophysical properties of the compounds. The studied dyes displayed AIE properties with spectral shapes related to the aggregate structure and a quantum yield up to 10.8%. The emission efficiency of the powder is attributed to the incorporation of multiply rotatable and twisted aryl groups to the fused heterocyclic moieties. The dyes also showed high thermal stability and potent antimicrobial activities against numerous bacterial and fungal strains. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of the new compounds was evaluated against the Caco-2 cell line, and molecular docking was used to investigate the binding conformation of the most effective compound with the MNK2 enzyme. Therefore, the presented structures may potentially be used for bioapplications.

Abstract
Fluorescent probes have been used as effective methods for profiling proteins in biological systems because of their high selectivity, sensitivity, and temporal-spatial resolution. A specific fluorescent probe for understanding the function of the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) channel that is closely related with various diseases like persistent pain, respiratory, and chronic itch syndromes, however, is still lacking. Here, we report a "turn-on" fluorescent probe (A1CA) for visualizing TRPA1 channels in the plasma membrane of live cells based on a photochromic ligand derived from 4-(phenylazo)benzenamine. Evaluating the specificity and sensitivity of A1CA by electrophysiology and confocal imaging showed that the A1CA probe displays higher affinity and selectivity to TRPA1 channel versus all other ion channels including TRPV1, TRPV3, Nav1.4, Nav1.5, and hERG. Based on the supporting evidence, A1CA has great potential as a molecular imaging probe for high-throughput screening of novel TRPA1 agonists.

Abstract
Under Karstedt’s catalyst, an organic–inorganic hybrid fluorescent nano-molecular dendrimer has been synthesized by grafting silafluorene units onto the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane core through hydrosilylation reaction. The new hybrid molecule exhibits high solid fluorescence quantum efficiency because of the nano-size and large steric hindrance of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane core. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that the thermal stability of the target compound is effectively improved by the presence of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane.

Abstract
Biocompatible fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles (FPNs) are promising luminescent probes in cellular bioimaging, while the fabrication of high-quantum-yield FPN using nonconjugated heterochain polymers derived from step-growth polymerization is still in its infancy. Herein, the nonconjugated polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN) is endowed with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature by incorporation of an AIEgen named of 1,2-di(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene into macromolecular backbone. Furthermore, the AIE-active PEN is crosslinked into water soluble fluorescent nanospheres showing good biocompatibility and strong emission ≈480 nm with a quantum yield of 21% in the presence of Ca2+ , which allows the successful bioimaging of cancer cells. Due to the facile fabrication of FPNs and their effective bioimaging performance, the current work will open the way for the biomedical applications of various high performance polyarylene ethers.

Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) probes have shown great potential applications in fluorescent sensing of biomolecules, and the integration of AIE probe and graphene oxide (GO) attracts intense interest in developing new tools for label-free and "turn-on" fluorescent biomolecular analysis. Herein, an ultrasensitive label-free and "turn-on" DNA sensing is realized by tuning the supramolecular interactions of AIE probe and GO with DNA. The investigation of supramolecular interactions of AIE probes and GO with DNA demonstrate that AIE probe with short alkyl chains substitute shows highest binding affinity with DNA strand, and GO with low oxidation degree possesses strong binding interactions to ssDNA and the highest fluorescence quenching efficiency. As a result, the optimized AIE probes and GO-based fluorescent sensor can selectively detect the target DNA sequence and exhibits the detection limitation as low as 0.17 × 10-9 m. It is believed that the research efforts will provide an efficient approach to improve the performance of DNA sensing assay and an indepth understanding of the supramolecular interactions of AIE probes and GO with DNA, and thus facilitate their extended applications in biosensors and biomedicine.

Abstract
Inorganic materials functionalized with organic fluorescent molecules combine advantages of them both, showing potential applications in biomedicine, chemosensors, light-emitting, and so on. However, when more traditional organic dyes are doped into the inorganic materials, the emission of resulting hybrid materials may be quenched, which is not conducive to the efficiency and sensitivity of detection. In contrast to the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) system, the aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) with high solid quantum efficiency, offer new potential for developing highly efficient inorganic-organic hybrid luminescent materials. So far, many AIEgens have been incorporated into inorganic materials through either physical doping caused by aggregation induced emission (AIE) or chemical bonding (e.g., covalent bonding, ionic bonding, and coordination bonding) caused by bonding induced emission (BIE) strategy. The hybrid materials exhibit excellent photoactive properties due to the intramolecular motion of AIEgens is restricted by inorganic matrix. Recent advances in the fabrication of AIEgens-functionalized inorganic-organic hybrid materials and their applications in biomedicine, chemical sensing, and solid-state light emitting are presented.

Abstract
A novel molecular design strategy is provided to rationally tune the stimuli response of luminescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. A series of new AIE-active molecules (AIE rotors) are prepared by covalently linking different numbers of tetraphenylethene moieties together. Upon gradually increasing the number of rotatable phenyl rings, the sensitivity of the response of the AIE rotors to viscosity and temperature is significantly enhanced. Although the molecular size is further enlarged, the performance is only slightly improved due to slightly increased effective rotors, but with largely increased rotational barriers. Such molecular engineering and experimental results offer more in-depth insight into the AIE mechanism, namely, restriction of intramolecular rotations. Notably, through this rational design, the AIE rotor with the largest molecular size turns out to be the most viscosensitive luminogen with a viscosity factor of up to 0.98.

First, the AEE-active fluorescent tetraphenylthiophene (TP) unit was synthetically connected to poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) by covalent and ionic bonds, resulting in the respective c- and i-TP-PNIPAM for the detection and quantification of the bovine serum albumin (BSA) model protein. When bind to BSA, the ionic i-TP-PNIPAM shows much better fluorescence (FL) sensitivity compared to c-PNIPAM. The fluorescence (FL) intensity of i-TP-PNIAPM displays a good linear dependence on concentration of BSA (0-1 mg/mL), indicating quantitative fluorimetric protein detection can be achieved. Further addition of anionic surfactant of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) considerably raised the FL intensity of the complex solution. All the FL response was discussed in term of conformational freedom of the TP unit under different environmental constraints.

Abstract
Specific bioprobes with fluorescence turn-on response are highly desirable for high contrast biosensing and imaging. In this work, we developed a new generation bioprobe by integrating tetraphenylsilole, a fluorogenic unit with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic, with cyclic arginine-glycine-aspartic acid tripeptide (cRGD), a targeting ligand to integrin α(v)β(3) receptor. Emission of the AIE probe is switched on upon its specific binding to integrin α(v)β(3), which allows quantitative detection of integrin α(v)β(3) in solution and real-time imaging of the binding process between cRGD and integrin α(v)β(3) on cell membrane. The probe can be used for tracking integrin α(v)β(3) and for identifying integrin α(v)β(3)-positive cancer cells.
