Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the prevalence and perceived efficacy of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use among urban adolescents with asthma, building on a previous landmark study, and to determine if CAM use varied by asthma severity, asthma control test (ACT), and non-CAM prescriptions for asthma treatment. METHODS An adapted survey was completed by 203 patients aged 13-18 years in outpatient specialty and primary care clinics in the Bronx, NY. Demographic information, adherence to prescription(s), ACT, and past year CAM utilization, perceived efficacy of CAM used, and substitution for prescription were assessed via self-report while severity, and related active prescriptions were derived through electronic health records. We conducted logistic regressions to determine if CAM use (yes/no) was associated with ACT (controlled/uncontrolled) or severity (persistent/intermittent). RESULTS 82% of participants utilized at least one form of CAM in the management of their asthma. Mind-body (65%) and natural products (63%) were the most frequent with highest reported perceived efficacy (81%). Only 35% of patients discussed CAM use with their provider. ACT did not vary by CAM use (AOR: 1.57; 95%CI: 0.59, 4.15; p = 0.37), while prescription adherence was associated with a nearly seven-fold increase in CAM use (AOR: 7.79; 95%CI: 3.27, 18.54; p<.0001). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of CAM use amongst Bronx adolescents with asthma has likely largely remained stable since an initial 2002 analysis. Despite a lack of association between CAM use and asthma control, there was a high degree of perceived efficacy. Adolescents who use CAM for asthma management may do so as an overall component of health-promoting behavior such as prescription adherence.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of pleuran (β-glucan isolated from Pleurotus ostreatus) on asthma control and respiratory morbidity in children on conventional GINA-based asthma treatment who had partially controlled perennial asthma. A double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentre clinical trial with a 2-arm, parallel design was conducted across three countries; 230 children aged 7 to 17 years were randomised (1:1) into an active group (receiving a pleuran/vitamin C combination) or a placebo group (receiving vitamin C only). This study consisted of 24 weeks of treatment (2 capsules a day) and then 24 weeks of follow-up. The primary endpoints included the effects of active treatment versus placebo on asthma control and respiratory tract infections (RTIs). Secondary endpoints included changes in the following measures: number of asthma exacerbations, with or without respiratory infection; quality of life of both asthmatic children and their caregivers; spirometric indices; fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels; safety after 24 weeks of treatment and also after the full 48-week study period. Overall, 206 children completed this study; 113 of these children were in the active group and received a pleuran/vitamin C combination for 24 weeks. After the 24-week treatment period, children below 12 years of age who were in the active group achieved significant improvements in asthma control compared to those in the placebo group (21.8 ± 3.5 vs. 20.3 ± 4.0; P = 0.02); while children at least 12 years old who were in the active group reported lower numbers of RTIs (0.7 ± 1.0 vs. 1.9 ± 1.7; P = 0.002) compared to children of this age in the placebo group. In addition, children below 12 years of age in the active group showed a significant decrease in asthma exacerbations compared to those in the placebo group (2.5 ± 1.6 vs. 3.3 ± 1.9; P = 0.05). At the end of the 48-week trial, a statistically significant improvement in asthma control was observed in 84.7% of children who received pleuran/vitamin C treatment compared to 67.0% of children who received vitamin C only (P = 0.01). The pleuran/vitamin C combined treatment was safe and well-tolerated, and no related serious adverse events were reported. This study highlights the favourable safety profile of pleuran/vitamin C supplementation and demonstrates positive effects of this treatment on asthma control and RTI incidence in children with allergic perennial asthma that was partially controlled by conventional therapy.

Abstract
Background Asthma is a common disease with rising prevalence worldwide, especially in industrialized countries. Current asthma therapy with traditional medicines lacks satisfactory success, hence the patients' search for alternative and complementary treatments for their diseases. Researchers have conducted many studies on plants with antiallergic and antiasthmatic effects in recent decades. Many of these plants are now used in clinics, and searching for their mechanism of action may result in creating new ideas for producing more effective drugs. Purpose The goal of this review was to provide a compilation of the findings on plants and their active agents with experimentally confirmed antiasthmatic effects. Study Design and Method. A literature search was conducted from 1986 to November 2023 in Scopus, Springer Link, EMBASE, Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science to identify and report the accumulated knowledge on herbs and their compounds that may be effective in asthma treatment. Results The results revealed that 58 plants and 32 herbal extracted compounds had antiasthmatic activity. Also, 32 plants were shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects or may act as bronchodilators and potentially have antiasthmatic effects, which must be investigated in future studies. Conclusion The ability of herbal medicine to improve asthma symptoms has been confirmed by clinical and preclinical studies, and such compounds may be used as a source for developing new antiasthmatic drugs. Moreover, this review suggests that many bioactive compounds have therapeutic potential against asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As a biologically based therapy, honey is used by parents in many parts of the world as a home remedy for their children. While information exists regarding the traditional use of honey for health issues in children, data regarding its relationship with health literacy is lacking. The aims of this study were to determine the use of honey to address children's health issues among parents of children aged 0-72 months and to explore the relationship between the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and health literacy. METHODS The data for this descriptive, cross-sectional study were collected between October and November 2022 via an online survey of 907 parents of children aged 0-72 months. A sociodemographic data collection form, the Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire (HCAMQ), and the Turkey Health Literacy Scale-32 (THLS-32) were used to collect the data. A t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. RESULTS The majority (86.5%) of the parents used honey for their children's health problems. Among the parents, 83.1% utilized honey as a remedy for alleviating cough symptoms, 10.4% employed it as a treatment for diarrhea, and 14% administered it for the management of oral mucositis. The mean THLS-32 and HCAMQ scores of the parents were 29.39 and 21.31, respectively, and there was a moderate correlation between the parents' THLS-32 and HCAMQ mean scores (r = 0.662, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION This study revealed that a significant proportion of parents who used honey to alleviate their children's health issues displayed positive attitudes toward complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) while concurrently exhibiting insufficient or limited health literacy levels. Therefore, it is advisable to enhance health literacy regarding the proper and safe utilization of honey, which functions as a biologically based CAM therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood asthma is a common respiratory ailment that significantly affects preschool children. Effective asthma management in this population is particularly challenging due to limited communication skills in children and the necessity for consistent involvement of a caregiver. With the rise of digital healthcare and the need for innovative interventions, Internet-based models can potentially offer relatively more efficient and patient-tailored care, especially in children. AIM To explore the impact of an intelligent Internet care model based on the child respiratory and asthma control test (TRACK) on asthma management in preschool children. METHODS The study group comprised preschoolers, aged 5 years or younger, that visited the hospital's pediatric outpatient and emergency departments between January 2021 and January 2022. Total of 200 children were evenly and randomly divided into the observation and control groups. The control group received standard treatment in accordance with the 2016 Guidelines for Pediatric Bronchial Asthma and the Global Initiative on Asthma. In addition to above treatment, the observation group was introduced to an intelligent internet nursing model, emphasizing the TRACK scale. Key measures monitored over a six-month period included the frequency of asthma attack, emergency visits, pulmonary function parameters (FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and PEF), monthly TRACK scores, and the SF-12 quality of life assessment. Post-intervention asthma control rates were assessed at six-month follow-up. RESULTS The observation group had fewer asthma attacks and emergency room visits than the control group (P < 0.05). After six months of treatment, the children in both groups had higher FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and PEF (P < 0.05). Statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups (P < 0.05). For six months, children in the observation group had a higher monthly TRACK score than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The PCS and MCSSF-12 quality of life scores were relatively higher than those before the nursing period (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the groups showed statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). The asthma control rate was higher in the observation group than in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION TRACK based Intelligent Internet nursing model may reduce asthma attacks and emergency visits in asthmatic children, improve lung function, quality of life, and the TRACK score and asthma control rate. The effect of nursing was significant, allowing for development of an asthma management model.

Abstract
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes respiratory difficulties. Black ginseng extract (BGE) has preventative effects on respiratory inflammatory diseases such as asthma. However, the pharmacological mechanisms behind the anti-asthmatic activity of BGE remain unknown. To investigate the anti-asthmatic mechanism of BGE, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate plus ionomycin (PMA/Iono)-stimulated mouse EL4 cells and ovalbumin (OVA)-induced mice with allergic airway inflammation were used. Immune cells (eosinophils/macrophages), interleukin (IL)-4, -5, -13, and serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Inflammatory cell recruitment and mucus secretion in the lung tissue were estimated. Protein expression was analyzed via Western blotting, including that of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and the activation of protein kinase C theta (PKCθ) and its downstream signaling molecules. BGE decreased T helper (Th)2 cytokines, serum IgE, mucus secretion, and iNOS expression in mice with allergic airway inflammation, thereby providing a protective effect. Moreover, BGE and its major ginsenosides inhibited the production of Th2 cytokines in PMA/Iono-stimulated EL4 cells. In EL4 cells, these outcomes were accompanied by the inactivation of PKCθ and its downstream transcription factors, such as nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), activator of transcription 6 (STAT6), and GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3), which are involved in allergic airway inflammation. BGE also inhibited the activation of PKCθ and the abovementioned transcriptional factors in the lung tissue of mice with allergic airway inflammation. These results highlight the potential of BGE as a useful therapeutic and preventative agent for allergic airway inflammatory diseases such as allergic asthma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widespread. This study aimed to investigate the use of CAM in children with central precocious puberty (PP) who used gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (GnRHa) treatment. METHODS Parents of 108 patients who were diagnosed as having PP were involved in the study. A questionnaire was administered to the parents during follow-ups. The patients were divided into two groups according to the use of CAM. RESULTS Forty (37%) patients had used CAM. Parents who graduated from primary school tended not to use CAM (χ 2 =10.463; p=0.015). There was no other statistically significant difference between the sociodemographic features (p>0.05). The most common information source was physicians (40%). Seventy-five percentage of CAM users and 44.1% of non-CAM users knew/heard about herbal medicine (χ 2 =8.517; p=0.004) and herbal medicine was the most common type of CAM used. 80% of parents in the CAM group and 54.4% of parents in the non-CAM group knew at least one biologically based therapy that had estrogenic activity (χ 2 =6.082; p=0.014). Seventy-one percentage of parents in the CAM group and 29% of parents in the non-CAM group stated that they would consider using CAM in the future (χ 2 =16.979; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The use of CAM among patients with PP is high. Although most CAM therapies are harmless, there may be adverse effects or drug interactions with current conventional treatment in children. Health professionals should be aware and inquire about the use and type of CAM, considering the medical history at every patient encounter.

Abstract
Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease that results from a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. There is no cure for asthma, and the management is usually as per published guidelines. As in many chronic diseases conditions, various alternative or complimentary therapies have been tried. Of these, yoga and pranayama have gained wider attention in recent years. While the term yoga is a complex term encompassing eight limbs as per Patamjai in the yoga sutras, in simple terms, yoga is described as a combination of 'asana' (physical exercises) and 'pranayama' (breathing exercise). The term "asthma" has been derived from the Greek word "panting,", which indicates a rapid and shallow breathing. The main aim of yoga and pranayama in asthma is to synchronize and control breathing, thus decreasing hyperventilation. Besides this, they also decrease the stress/strain/anxiety, change in behavior, boost immunity, and improve strength/endurance of respiratory muscles that are helpful in any subject with asthma. There have been a good number of studies including clinical trials in children with asthma that have found some beneficial effects. In the present review, the physiology of yoga and pranayama, rationale for their use in children with asthma along with a summary of various studies conducted till date, have been discussed. These are followed by recommendations regarding their incorporation in the standard of care of children with asthma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of propolis on dentin hypersensitivity reduction. DESIGN The search was conducted in Pubmed, Scopus, Web of science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature data base (Lilacs), Brazilian Library in Dentistry (BBO), Embase, and Cochrane Library aiming to identify relevant randomized clinical trials that evaluated the effect of propolis on dentin hypersensitivity. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used for assessing the risk of bias. RESULTS From the total of 63 articles found in the search, six clinical trials were selected. All studies reported that propolis was more effective in reducing hypersensitivity than the placebo. No side effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS Overall, propolis extract can be considered an effective, safe and low-cost alternative to reduce the dentin hypersensitivity.
