The biological pump effects of phytoplankton on the occurrence and benthic bioaccumulation of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in a hypereutrophic lake

Investigation of organochlorine pesticides in the Wang Lake Wetland, China: Implications for environmental processes and risks

Wang Lake Wetland is an important habitat for many fish and migratory birds. To explore the effect of periodic hydrological changes on the transfer and ecological risk of OCPs in the multimedia system of the wetland, eight sampling sites were selected for collecting soil (SS), sediment (SD) and water, to acquire dissolved phase (DP) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples during low- and high-flow periods. The results indicated that OCPs are pervasive in the various media of Wang Lake Wetland, and there was a significant temporal variability in concentration of ∑23OCPs in the SPM samples. Several OCPs exist certain ecological risks to aquatic organisms, but higher level of OCPs do not always equal to higher ecological risk. The residues of OCPs are largely attributed to their historical use, but recent inputs of some of them are still non-ignorable. The relatively higher values of organic carbon normalized partition coefficient (KOC) for SPM-W (KOC(SPM-W)) were obtained, which reflected the more frequent exchange of OCPs in the SPM samples. The sediment of the Wang Lake Wetland is likely to be a sink for several OCPs with high n-octanol/water partition coefficient (KOW) (e.g., DDTs and its metabolites), and high-temperature and rainfall-driven changes may promote the migration of OCPs with low KOW to the DP.

Review of scientific literature on available methods of assessing organochlorine pesticides in the environment

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) widely used in agriculture and industry, causing serious health and ecological consequences upon exposure. This review offers a thorough overview of OCPs analysis emphasizing the necessity of ongoing work to enhance the identification and monitoring of these POPs in environmental and human samples. The benefits and drawbacks of the various OCPs analysis techniques including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) are discussed. Challenges associated with validation and optimization criteria, including accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantitation (LOQ), must be met for a method to be regarded as accurate and reliable. Suitable quality control measures, such as method blanks and procedural blanks, are emphasized. The LOD and LOQ are critical quality control measure for efficient quantification of these compounds, and researchers have explored various techniques for their calculation. Matrix interference, solubility, volatility, and partition coefficient influence OCPs occurrences and are discussed in this review. Validation experiments, as stated by European Commission in document SANTE/11813/2017, showed that the acceptance criteria for method validation of OCP analytes include ≤20 % for high precision, and 70-120 % for recovery. This may ultimately be vital for determining the human health risk effects of exposure to OCP and for formulating sensible environmental and public health regulations.

Phytoplankton Biological Pump Controls the Spatiotemporal Bioaccumulation and Trophic Transfer of Antibiotics in a Large Subtropical River

The spatiotemporal bioaccumulation, trophic transfer of antibiotics, and regulation of the phytoplankton biological pump were quantitatively evaluated in the Pearl River, South China. The occurrence of antibiotics in organisms indicated a significant spatiotemporal trend associated with the life cycle of phytoplankton. Higher temporal bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were found in phytoplankton at the bloom site, while lower BAFs of antibiotics in organisms could not be explained by phytoplankton biomass dilution but were attributed to the low bioavailability of antibiotics, which was highly associated with distribution coefficients (R2 = 0.480-0.595, p < 0.05). Such lower BAFs of antibiotics in phytoplankton at higher biomass sites hampered the entry of antibiotics into food webs, and trophic dilutions were subsequently observed for antibiotics except for ciprofloxacin (CFX) and sulfamerazine (SMZ) at sites with blooms in all seasons. Distribution of CFX, norfloxacin (NFX), and sulfapyridine (SPD) showed further significant positive relationships with the plasma protein fraction (R2 = 0.275-0.216, p < 0.05). Both mean BAFs and trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were significantly negatively correlated with phytoplankton biomass (R2 = 0.661-0.741, p < 0.05). This study highlights the importance of the biological pump in the regulation of spatiotemporal variations in bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of antibiotics in anthropogenic-impacted eutrophic rivers in subtropical regions.

Hydrocarbons in size-fractionated plankton of the Mediterranean Sea (MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE campaign)

Aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs and PAHs, respectively) were analyzed in the dissolved fraction (<0.7 μm) of surface water and in various particulate/planktonic size fractions (0.7-60, 60-200, 200-500 and 500-1000 μm) collected at the deep chlorophyll maximum, along a North-South transect in the Mediterranean Sea in spring 2019 (MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE campaign). Suspended particulate matter, biomass, total chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon, C and N isotopic ratios, and lipid biomarkers were also determined to help characterizing the size-fractionated plankton and highlight the potential link with the content in AHs and PAHs in these size fractions. Ʃ28AH concentrations ranged 18-489 ng L-1 for water, 3.9-72 μg g-1 dry weight (dw) for the size fraction 0.7-60 μm, and 3.4-55 μg g-1 dw for the fractions 60-200, 200-500 and 500-1000 μm. AH molecular profiles revealed that they were mainly of biogenic origin. Ʃ14PAH concentrations were 0.9-16 ng L-1 for water, and Ʃ27PAH concentrations were 53-220 ng g-1 dw for the fraction 0.7-60 μm and 35-255 ng g-1 dw for the three higher fractions, phenanthrene being the most abundant compound in planktonic compartment. Two processes were evidenced concerning the PAH patterns, the bioreduction, i.e., the decrease in concentrations from the small size fractions (0.7-60 and 60-200 μm) to the higher ones (200-500 μm and 500-1000 μm), and the biodilution, i.e., the decrease in concentrations in plankton at higher suspended matter or biomass, especially for the 0.7-60 and 60-200-μm size fractions. We estimated the biological pump fluxes of Ʃ27PAHs below 100-m depth in the Western Mediterranean Sea at 15 ± 10 ng m-2 day-1, which is comparable to those previously reported in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a sediment core from Lake Taihu and their associations with sedimentary organic matter

Sediment core is the recorder of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollutions and the associated sedimentary organic matter (SOM), acting as crucial supports for pollution control and environmental management. Here, the sedimentary records of PAHs and SOM in the past century in Lake Taihu, China, were reconstructed from a 50-cm sediment core. On the one hand, the presence of PAHs ranged from 8.99 to 199.2 ng/g. Vertically, PAHs declined with the depth increased, and the sedimentation history of PAHs was divided into two stages with a discontinuity at 20 cm depth. In composition, PAHs in the sediment core were dominated by three-ring PAHs (44.6% ± 9.1%, mean ± standard deviation), and were followed by four-ring (27.0% ± 3.3%), and five-ring (12.1% ± 4.0%) PAHs. In toxicity assessment, the sedimentary records of benzo[a]pyrene-based toxic equivalency were well described by an exponential model with R-square of 0.95, and the environmental background toxic value was identified as 1.62 ng/g. On the other hand, different components of SOM were successfully identified by n-alkane markers (p < 0.01) and the variations of SOM were well explained (84.6%). A discontinuity of SOM was recognized at 22 cm depth. Association study showed that the sedimentary PAHs were associated with both anthropogenic and biogenic SOM (p < 0.05) with explained variances for most individual PAHs of 60%. It indicated the vertical distributions of PAHs were driven by sedimentary SOM. Therefore, environmental processes such as biogenic factors should attract more attentions as well as PAH emissions to reduce the impacts of PAHs.

Contamination of planktonic food webs in the Mediterranean Sea: Setting the frame for the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE oceanographic cruise (spring 2019)

This paper looks at experiential feedback and the technical and scientific challenges tied to the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise that took place in the Mediterranean Sea in spring 2019. This cruise proposes an innovative approach to investigate the accumulation and transfer of inorganic and organic contaminants within the planktonic food webs. We present detailed information on how the cruise worked, including 1) the cruise track and sampling stations, 2) the overall strategy, based mainly on the collection of plankton, suspended particles and water at the deep chlorophyll maximum, and the separation of these particles and planktonic organisms into various size fractions, as well as the collection of atmospheric deposition, 3) the operations performed and material used at each station, and 4) the sequence of operations and main parameters analysed. The paper also provides the main environmental conditions that were prevailing during the campaign. Lastly, we present the types of articles produced based on work completed by the cruise that are part of this special issue.

Effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on marine and freshwater microalgae - A review

The first synthetic review of the PAHs effects on microalgae in experimental studies and aquatic ecosystems is provided. Phytoplankton and phytobenthos from marine and freshwaters show a wide range of sensitivities to PAHs, and can accumulate, transfer and degrade PAHs. Different toxicological endpoints including growth, chlorophyll a, in vivo fluorescence yield, membrane integrity, lipid content, anti-oxidant responses and gene expression are reported for both freshwater and marine microalgal species exposed to PAHs in culture and in natural assemblages. Photosynthesis, the key process carried out by microalgae appears to be the most impacted by PAH exposure. The effect of PAHs is both dose- and species-dependent and influenced by environmental factors such as UV radiation, temperature, and salinity. Under natural conditions, PAHs are typically present in mixtures and the toxic effects induced by single PAHs are not necessarily extrapolated to mixtures. Natural microalgal communities appear more sensitive to PAH contamination than microalgae in monospecific culture. To further refine the ecological risks linked to PAH exposure, species-sensitivity distributions (SSD) were analyzed based on published EC₅₀s (half-maximal effective concentrations during exposure). HC₅ (harmful concentration for 5% of the species assessed) was derived from SSD to provide a toxicity ranking for each of nine PAHs. The most water-soluble PAHs naphthalene (HC₅ = 650 µg/L), acenaphthene (HC₅ = 274 µg/L), and fluorene (HC₅ = 76.8 µg/L) are the least toxic to microalgae, whereas benzo[a]pyrene (HC₅ = 0.834 µg/L) appeared as the more toxic. No relationship between EC₅₀ and cell biovolume was established, which does not support assumptions that larger microalgal cells are less sensitive to PAHs, and calls for further experimental evidence. The global PAHs HC₅ for marine species was on average higher than for freshwater species (26.3 and 1.09 µg/L, respectively), suggesting a greater tolerance of marine phytoplankton towards PAHs. Nevertheless, an important number of experimental exposure concentrations and reported toxicity thresholds are above known PAHs solubility in water. The precise and accurate assessment of PAHs toxicity to microalgae will continue to benefit from more rigorously designed experimental studies, including control of exposure duration and biometric data on test microalgae.

The adsorption and absorption kinetics of BDE-47 by Chlorella sp. and the role of extracellular polymer substances influenced by environmental factors

Microalgae act as the entrance of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) from abiotic to biotic environments, which controlled the environmental fate of PBDEs in aquatic environments. Combing with typical coastal environmental characteristics including extracellular polymer substances (EPS) enrichment, light limitation and nitrogen starvation, the changes of adsorption and absorption kinetics of BDE-47 by Chlorella sp. and the role of EPS therein were investigated. The results quantified the adsorption and absorption kinetics of BDE-47 by Chlorella sp. cells and fitted it by the Lagergren pseudo first order model. Furthermore, we found the adsorption and absorption kinetics could be changed by the above mentioned environmental factors. To be specific, the total BDE-47 adsorption amounts per microalgal cell were increased as the increase of ambient EPS (proteins or carbohydrates), attributing to the increase of soluble (SL)-EPS contents; increased total BDE-47 adsorption amounts but decreased absorption rates were found under light limitation and nitrogen starvation, which were attributed to increased bound (B)-EPS contents and protein/carbohydrates (P/C) ratios therein, respectively. Therefore, our study elucidated the adsorption and absorption kinetics of PBDEs by microalgae could be influenced by ambient environmental changes, clarified the roles of SL-EPS, B-EPS contents and P/C ratios, providing a solid basis for evaluating the environmental fate of PBDEs in the marine environments.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in corals and plankton from a coastal coral reef ecosystem, south China sea

Recent studies have indicated that coral mucus plays an important role in the bioaccumulation of a few organic pollutants by corals, but no relevant studies have been conducted on organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Previous studies have also indicated that OCPs widely occur in a few coral reef ecosystems and have a negative effect on coral health. Therefore, this study focused on the occurrence and bioaccumulation of a few OCPs, such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and p,p'-methoxychlor (MXC), in the coral tissues and mucus as well as in plankton and seawater from a coastal reef ecosystem (Weizhou Island) in the South China Sea. The results indicated that DDTs were the predominant OCPs in seawater and marine biota. Higher concentrations of OCPs in plankton may contribute to the enrichment of OCPs by corals. The significantly higher total OCP concentration (∑₈OCPs) found in coral mucus than in coral tissues suggested that coral mucus played an essential role in resisting enrichment of OCPs by coral tissues. This study explored the different functions of coral tissues and mucus in OCP enrichment and biodegradation for the first time, highlighting the need for OCP toxicity experiments from both tissue and mucus perspectives.

Toxicity of 2, 2', 4, 4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) on the green microalgae Chlorella sp. and the role of cellular oxidative stress

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are toxic to marine organisms including the major primary producer phytoplankton, while the toxic mechanisms haven't yet been fully clarified. Therefore, we comprehensively studied the toxic mechanisms of BDE-47 on the marine chlorophyte Chlorella sp., with a focus on the role of cellular oxidative stress. The results indicate that BDE-47 stress resulted in the inhibition of population growth as well as cell death and programmed cell death. The antioxidant system was activated in both low and high BDE-47 treatments, but only microalgal cells in the high BDE-47 treatment showed cellular oxidative stress. By adding ROS inhibitor, the relief of photosynthetic inhibition, Ca²⁺ overproduction and cell death was found. Therefore, we conclude that photosynthetic damage, cell death and cellular oxidative stress were the major mechanisms of BDE-47 toxicity to Chlorella sp., and that cellular oxidative stress played an important role in mediating the other mechanisms.

Preparation of structured biochar, its adsorption capacity of N and P and its characterization

Structured biochar (SC) was prepared by biochar from cattail-sludge mixture (CS) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and treated as an adsorbent, and the KH₂PO₄ and NH₄Cl solution were treated as adsorbates, to explore the adsorption capacity of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) on SC in water. A single factor experimental method was employed to determine the optimal parameters for SC. The results showed that: 60% sizing amount, 5 N (cm²)^-1 molding pressure, 160 °C molding temperature and 95 min molding time were optimal parameters for SC preparation. The adsorption of P and N on SC conforms to the Langmuir model, with the distribution of adsorption sites on the surface tending to be even. The adsorption of P and N on SC is favorable and spontaneous, and the adsorption tends to be monolayer adsorption with a major role for chemical adsorption. The higher the temperature, the higher the adsorption capacity of P and N on SC is, and the affinity of SC with P is higher than that with N. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model for the adsorption of N and P by SC has a high degree of fit. The pH_pzc value of SC was 8.57. The hydrophobicity and stability of SC are rather high, with the surface particles closely bonded and increased roughness and pore diameter. The adsorption mechanism of P and N on SC can be attributed to pore filling, electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding. The results can provide a new technology for the resource utilization of cattails and sludge, a new idea for the recycling and reuse of biochar, and a basis for the selection of materials for the treatment of eutrophic water bodies.

Prediction of hydrophobic organic compound partition to algal organic matter through the growth cycle of Microcystis aeruginosa

Algal organic matter (AOM) is an important source for the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool in aquatic systems, particularly in eutrophic waters. In this study, we reported the dynamic pattern of AOM hydrophobicity during the growth cycle of Microcystis aeruginosa using the partition coefficients of AOM in the aqueous two-phase system (K_ATPS) as a simple quantitative measure. AOM hydrophobicity had significant and non-monotonic changes during the growth cycle. It increased in the lag and early exponential phases, then decreased in the late exponential and stationary phases, and rebounded in the decline phase. AOM hydrophobicity determined using the resin fractionation, SUVA₂₅₄, and nuclear magnetic resonance methods shared similar non-monotonic pattern. Nevertheless, the correlations among these indicators were poor. The partition behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorobenzenes to AOM was assessed based the K_ATPS dataset and the two-phase system (TPS) model. The TPS model showed good prediction power for the partition behavior of AOM with an RMSE of 0.23, suggesting that it was applicable to AOM from Microcystis aeruginosa. Our results indicate that algae activity will influence the overall hydrophobicity of the DOM pool depending on the growth phase, resulting in changes in the bioavailability of hydrophobic organic compounds in aquatic systems.
