Abstract
A part of a running research project directed to building coordinated polymers based on the
rigid aromatic s-triazine, the researchers reported the synthesis, characterization, antimicrobial, antioxidant
and anti-inflammatory activities of four new transition metal complexes derived from the
nanosized diol monomer (H2L ligand) as early representatives of its nanosized o-naphthol-based polyester.
The reaction of the new nanosized N2O2 donor diimine containing sulfone with zinc (II), copper
(II), nickel (II) and cobalt (II) ions offered nonconducting metal complexes. The SEM image showed
the diol monomer was organized as well-defined nanosized rod-like morphology. Spectroscopic and
magnetic susceptibility studies displayed the tetrahedral geometries for Zn (II), Co (II) and Ni (II)
complexes while the Cu (II) complex had square planar geometry. The antioxidant and antiinflammatory
activities were in the order [Cu2L2].4H2O > [Zn2L2] > [Ni (HL)2] > [Co2L2] > H2L. Despite
the ligand, [Cu2L2].4H2O, [Zn2L2] and [Co2L2] complexes displayed no efficacy against the
screened microbes, only the tetrahedral Ni (II) complex exhibited moderate activity. The reporting
complexes possessed several notable advantages that render them as promising alternatives for the development
of therapeutic agents. Selection of the rigid O-substituted naphthol ring as a source of Odonor
ligands is expected to construct high dimensional frameworks and more easily contributing and
controlling metallic topology.

Abstract
The antioxidant properties of oxydiacetate complexes of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) with 1,10-phenantroline and 2,2'-bipyridine have been investigated towards the superoxide radical using the nitro blue tetrazolium chloride (NBT) test and the cyclic voltammetry (CV). Moreover, the biological activity of the complexes under study has been investigated in the Human Dermal Fibroblasts adult (HDFa) cell line. In the first step, the cytotoxic and the antiproliferative activities of the complexes were examined. Subsequently, the cytoprotective properties of the complexes have been investigated in an oxidative stress conditions induced by H2O2.

Abstract
Despite substantial research on cancer therapeutics, systemic toxicity and drug-resistance limits the clinical application of many drugs like cisplatin. Therefore, new chemotherapeutic strategies against different malignancies are needed. Targeted cancer therapy is a new paradigm for cancer therapeutics which targets pathways or chemical entities specific to cancer cells than normal ones. Unlike normal cells, cancer cells contain elevated copper which plays an integral role in angiogenesis. Copper is an important metal ion associated with chromatin DNA, particularly with guanine. Thus, targeting copper via copper-specific chelators in cancer cells can serve as an effective anticancer strategy. New pharmacophore di(2-picolyl)amine (DPA)-3(bromoacetyl) coumarin (ligand-L) was synthesized and characterized by IR, ESI-MS, 1H- and 13C-NMR. Binding ability of ligand-L to DNA/Cu(II) was evaluated using a plethora of biophysical techniques which revealed ligand-L-DNA and ligand-L-Cu(II) interaction. Competitive displacement assay and docking confirmed non-intercalative binding mode of ligand-L with ctDNA. Cyclic voltammetry confirmed ligand-L causes quasi reversible Cu(II)/Cu(I) conversion. Further, acute toxicity studies revealed no toxic effects of ligand-L on mice. To evaluate the chemotherapeutic potential and anticancer mechanism of ligand-L, DNA damage via pBR322 cleavage assay and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation were studied. Results demonstrate that ligand-L causes DNA cleavage involving ROS generation in the presence of Cu(II). In conclusion, ligand-L causes redox cycling of Cu(II) to generate ROS which leads to oxidative DNA damage and pro-oxidant cancer cell death. These findings will establish ligand-L as a lead molecule to synthesize new molecules with better copper chelating and pro-oxidant properties against different malignancies.

Abstract
The potentiometric and conductometric titration methods have been used to characterize the stability of series of VO(IV)-, Co(II)- and Ni(II)-oxydiacetato complexes in DMSO-water solutions containing 0-50 % (v/v) DMSO. The influence of DMSO as a co-solvent on the stability of the complexes as well as the oxydiacetic acid was evaluated. Furthermore, the reactivity of the complexes towards superoxide free radicals was assessed by employing the nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) assay. The biological properties of the complexes were investigated in relation to their cytoprotective activity against the oxidative damage generated exogenously by using hydrogen peroxide in the Human Dermal Fibroblasts adult (HDFa) cell line as well as to their antimicrobial activity against the bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis). The relationship between physicochemical and biological properties of the complexes was discussed.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to find a relationship between physicochemical properties of the oxovanadium(IV) complexes, namely [VO(ODA)(H2O)2], [VO(ODA)(phen)]·1.5H2O and [VO(ODA)(bipy)]·2H2O (ODA = oxydiacetate) as well as [VO(H2O)5](2+), and their biological activity. A potentiometric titration method has been used to characterize the stability of the complexes in aqueous solutions. Furthermore, the reactivity of the complexes towards superoxide free radicals was assessed by employing the NBT assay as well as a cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique. Additionally, the investigations of the antioxidant properties of the complexes were complemented by studying their reactivity towards organic radicals (the ABTS and DPPH tests). Finally, the biological properties of the complexes were investigated in relation to their cytoprotective activity against the oxidative damage generated exogenously by using hydrogen peroxide in the Hippocampal neuronal cell line HT22 (the MTT and LDH tests). The obtained results showed that all the compounds under study display antioxidant properties but a concentration-depended protective effect against the oxidative damage was found for [VO(ODA)(bipy)]·2H2O only.
