Effect of particle morphology on the electrochemical performance of hydrothermally synthesized NiMn2O4

Phase tunable nickel doped Mn3O4 nanoparticle synthesis by chemical precipitation: kinetic study on dye degradation

Nickel (Ni) doped Mn3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a quick and facile chemical precipitation technique to investigate their performance in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in the absence of light. XRD, FESEM, TEM, AAS, XPS, and FT-IR were used for the investigation of the structural, surface morphological, and elemental composition of Ni doped Mn3O4 NPs. XRD confirms the formation of a tetragonal phase structure of pure Mn3O4 and 1% and 3% Ni doped Mn3O4 NPs. However, mixed phases were found in the case of 5 to 10% Ni doped Mn3O4 NPs. Well-defined spherical-shaped morphology was presented through FESEM. Particle sizes decreased linearly (58.50 to 23.68 nm) upon increasing the doping concentration from 0% (pure Mn3O4) to 7% respectively, and then increased (48.62 nm) in the case of 10% doping concentration. TEM further confirmed spherical shaped 32 nm nanoparticles for 7% Ni doped Mn3O4. The elemental composition and oxidation state of the prepared NPs were confirmed by using XPS spectra. Mixed valence Mn2+ and Mn4+ states were found in pure Mn3O4 and 1% and 3% Ni doped Mn3O4 NPs in the ratio of 2MnO-MnO2. In addition, three different oxidation states Mn2+, Mn3+, and Mn4+ were found in 5 to 10% Ni doped Mn3O4 NPs. Moreover, as a dopant Ni exists as Ni2+ and Ni3+ states in all Ni doped Mn3O4 NPs. The synthesized NPs were then applied as potent oxidants for the degradation of MB at pH 3. With the increase of doping concentration to 7%, the degree of degradation was increased to 79% in the first 10 min and finally, it became about 98%. The degradation of MB follows the pseudo-first-order linear kinetics with a degradation rate of 0.0342 min-1.

High-performance spinel NiMn2O4 supported carbon felt for effective electrochemical conversion of ethylene glycol and hydrogen evolution applications

One of the most effective electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxidation reactions is NiMn2O4 spinel oxide. Here, a 3-D porous substrate with good conductivity called carbon felt (CF) is utilized. The composite of NiMn2O4-supported carbon felt was prepared using the facile hydrothermal method. The prepared electrode was characterized by various surface and bulk analyses like powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning and transmitted electron microscopy, thermal analysis (DTA), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The activity of NiMn2O4 toward the electrochemical conversion of ethylene glycol at a wide range of concentrations was investigated. The electrode showed a current density of 24 mA cm-2 at a potential of 0.5 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Furthermore, the ability of the electrode toward hydrogen evaluation in an alkaline medium was performed. Thus, the electrode achieved a current density equal 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 210 mV (vs. RHE), and the provided Tafel slope was 98 mV dec-1.

PEG mediated NiMn2O4 nanomaterials as a nano catalyst for peroxidase mimetic activity and photocatalytic degradation

Artificial peroxidases have garnered a lot of attention owing to their tremendous superiority over their natural counterparts. Here, NiMn2O4 nanoparticles have been successfully prepared through PEG assisted hydrothermal method. The varied PEG concentrations significantly altered the morphology and particle size of the synthesizedmaterials. We demonstrate the improved peroxide-like assay of different NiMn2O4 nanoparticles for the first time. Among them, Ni4 nanoparticles exhibit good peroxidase-like activity by generating the oxidation of chromogenic substrate 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2 and a blue color charge transfer product with an absorption maximum is positioned at 652 nm. These observations led to the development of a method for assessingH2O2 that can be read visually and photometrically. The Ni4 nanoparticles show enhanced kinetics compared to the natural enzyme horse radish peroxidase (HRP) with a lower Km (0.168 mM) value. Additionally, this Ni4 nanosphere applies as a visible light photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (Rh B) dyes under visible-light irradiation. Under optimized conditions, the degradationrates of MB and Rh B are 68 and 80.7 %, respectively, after 210 min, and recyclable efficiency is about 99 % for Rh B photocatalytic degradation in the first test and 98 % for five cycles, and about 98 % for MB photocatalytic degradation in the first test and 97 % for five cycles.

Upcycling of surgical facemasks into carbon based thin film electrode for supercapacitor technology

Polypropylene (PP), a commonly used plastic, is used for making the outer layers of a surgical face mask. In 2020, around 3 billion surgical face masks were disposed into the environment, causing a huge threat to wildlife, aquatic life, and ecosystems. In this work, we have reported the sulfonation technique for stabilizing the surgical face masks and their conversion into carbon nanoparticles for application as a supercapacitor electrode. The electrode is fabricated by preparing a slurry paste of carbon nanoparticles and pasting it on a conductive wearable fabric. To investigate the performance of the carbon thin film electrode, electrochemical techniques are employed. The Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) analysis performed at different scan rates in a 6 molar KOH electrolyte reveals that the carbon thin film acts as a positive electrode. At 4 A g^-1, the electrode shows a specific capacitance of 366.22 F g^-1 and 100% retention of specific capacitance for 8000 cycles. A two-electrode asymmetric device is fabricated using carbon thin film as the positive electrode, NiO thin film as the negative electrode, and a KOH separator between two electrodes. The device shows a specific capacitance of 113.73 F g^-1 at 1.3 A g^-1 and glows a red LED for 6 min. This work is a step towards upcycling the waste produced from surgical face masks used during the COVID-19 pandemic and its application for energy storage.

Phytochemical-assisted green synthesis of CuFeOx nano-rose electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media

This study represents a green synthesis method for fabricating an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrode by depositing two-dimensional CuFeO_x on nickel foam (NF). Two-dimensional CuFeO_x was deposited on NF using in situ hydrothermal synthesis in the presence of Aloe vera extract. This phytochemical-assisted synthesis of CuFeO_x resulted in a unique nano-rose-like morphology (petal diameter 30-70 nm), which significantly improved the electrochemical surface area of the electrode. The synthesized electrode was analyzed for its OER electrocatalytic activity and it was observed that using 75% Aloe vera extract in the phytochemical-assisted synthesis of CuFeO_x resulted in improved OER electrocatalytic performance by attaining an overpotential of 310 mV for 50 mA cm^-2 and 410 mV for 100 mA cm^-2. The electrode also sustained robust stability throughout the 50 h of chronopotentiometry studies under alkaline electrolyte conditions, demonstrating its potential as an efficient OER electrode material. This study highlights the promising use of Aloe vera extract as a green and cost-effective way to synthesize efficient OER electrode materials.

Pseudocapacitive Effects of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes-Functionalised Spinel Copper Manganese Oxide

Spinel copper manganese oxide nanoparticles combined with acid-treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CuMn₂O₄/MWCNTs) were used in the development of electrodes for pseudocapacitor applications. The CuMn₂O₄/MWCNTs preparation involved initial synthesis of Mn₃O₄ and CuMn₂O₄ precursors followed by an energy efficient reflux growth method for the CuMn₂O₄/MWCNTs. The CuMn₂O₄/MWCNTs in a three-electrode cell assembly and in 3 M LiOH aqueous electrolyte exhibited a specific capacitance of 1652.91 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1 current load. Similar investigation in 3 M KOH aqueous electrolyte delivered a specific capacitance of 653.41 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1 current load. Stability studies showed that after 6000 cycles, the CuMn₂O₄/MWCNTs electrode exhibited a higher capacitance retention (88%) in LiOH than in KOH (64%). The higher capacitance retention and cycling stability with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.6% observed in the LiOH is an indication of a better charge storage behaviour in this electrolyte than in the KOH electrolyte with a Coulombic efficiency of 97.3%. This superior performance in the LiOH electrolyte than in the KOH electrolyte is attributed to an intercalation/de-intercalation mechanism which occurs more easily in the LiOH electrolyte than in the KOH electrolyte.

Electrospun Nickel Manganite (NiMn2O4) Nanocrystalline Fibers for Humidity and Temperature Sensing

Nickel manganite nanocrystalline fibers were obtained by electrospinning and subsequent calcination at 400 °C. As-spun fibers were characterized by TG/DTA, Scanning Electron Microscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis. X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of nickel manganite with a cubic spinel structure, while N₂ physisorption at 77 K enabled determination of the BET specific surface area as 25.3 m²/g and (BJH) mesopore volume as 21.5 m²/g. The material constant (B) of the nanocrystalline nickel manganite fibers applied by drop-casting on test interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate, dried at room temperature, was determined as 4379 K in the 20–50 °C temperature range and a temperature sensitivity of −4.95%/K at room temperature (25 °C). The change of impedance with relative humidity was monitored at 25 and 50 °C for a relative humidity (RH) change of 40 to 90% in the 42 Hzπ1 MHz frequency range. At 100 Hz and 25 °C, the sensitivity of 327.36 ± 80.12 kΩ/%RH was determined, showing that nickel manganite obtained by electrospinning has potential as a multifunctional material for combined humidity and temperature sensing.

Application of Ionic Liquids for Batteries and Supercapacitors

Nowadays, the rapid development and demand of high-performance, lightweight, low cost, portable/wearable electronic devices in electrical vehicles, aerospace, medical systems, etc., strongly motivates researchers towards advanced electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices and technologies. The electrolyte is also one of the most significant components of EES devices, such as batteries and supercapacitors. In addition to rapid ion transport and the stable electrochemical performance of electrolytes, great efforts are required to overcome safety issues due to flammability, leakage and thermal instability. A lot of research has already been completed on solid polymer electrolytes, but they are still lagging for practical application. Over the past few decades, ionic liquids (ILs) as electrolytes have been of considerable interest in Li-ion batteries and supercapacitor applications and could be an important way to make breakthroughs for the next-generation EES systems. The high ionic conductivity, low melting point (lower than 100 °C), wide electrochemical potential window (up to 5-6 V vs. Li+/Li), good thermal stability, non-flammability, low volatility due to cation-anion combinations and the promising self-healing ability of ILs make them superior as "green" solvents for industrial EES applications. In this short review, we try to provide an overview of the recent research on ILs electrolytes, their advantages and challenges for next-generation Li-ion battery and supercapacitor applications.

Efficient Flexible All-Solid Supercapacitors with Direct Sputter-Grown Needle-Like Mn/MnOx@Graphite-Foil Electrodes and PPC-Embedded Ionic Electrolytes

Recent critical issues regarding next-generation energy storage systems concern the cost-effective production of lightweight, safe and flexible supercapacitors yielding high performances, such as high energy and power densities as well as a long cycle life. Thus, current research efforts are concentrated on the development of high-performance advance electrode materials with high capacitance and excellent stability and solid electrolytes that confer flexibility and safety features. In this work, emphasis is placed on the binder-free, needle-like nanostructured Mn/MnOx layers grown onto graphite-foil deposited by reactive sputtering technique and to the polymer gel embedded ionic electrolytes, which are to be employed as new flexible pseudocapacitive supercapacitor components. Microstructural, morphological and compositional analysis of the layers has been investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A flexible lightweight symmetric pouch-cell solid-state supercapacitor device is fabricated by sandwiching a PPC-embedded ionic liquid ethyl-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (EMIM)(TFSI) polymer gel electrolyte (PGE) between two Mn/MnOx@Graphite-foil electrodes and tested to exhibit promising supercapacitive behaviour with a wide stable electrochemical potential window (up to 2.2 V) and long-cycle stability. This pouch-cell supercapacitor device offers a maximum areal capacitance of 11.71 mF/cm2@ 0.03 mA/cm2 with maximum areal energy density (Ea) of 7.87 mWh/cm2 and areal power density (Pa) of 1099.64 mW/cm2, as well as low resistance, flexibility and good cycling stability. This supercapacitor device is also environmentally safe and could be operated under a relatively wide potential window without significant degradation of capacitance performance compared to other reported values. Overall, these rationally designed flexible symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitors signify a new promising and emerging candidate for component integrated storage of renewable energy harvested current.
