Occurrences, sources, and transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants in the waters of Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica

Behavioral toxicity of TDCPP in marine zooplankton: Evidence from feeding and swimming responses, molecular dynamics and metabolomics of rotifers

As new organic flame retardants, chlorinated organophosphate esters (Cl-OPEs) have high water solubility and structural similarity to organophosphate pesticides, posing risks to aquatic organisms. The potential neurotoxicity of Cl-OPEs has attracted attention, especially in marine invertebrates with a relatively simple nervous system. In this study, a marine rotifer with a cerebral ganglion, Brachionus plicatilis, was exposed to tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) (two environmental concentrations and one extreme level), and the changes in feeding and swimming behaviors and internal mechanism were explored. Exposure to 1.05 nM TDCPP did not change the filtration and ingestion rates of rotifers and average linear velocity. But 0.42 and 4.20 μM TDCPP inhibited these three parameters and reduced unsaturated fatty acid content, reproduction and population growth. All TDCPP test concentrations suppressed AChE activity, causing excessive accumulation of acetylcholine within rotifers, thereby disturbing the neural innervation of corona cilia. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics revealed that this inhibition was because TDCPP can bind to the catalytic active site of rotifer AChE through van der Waals forces and electrostatic interactions. TRP420 was the leading amino residue in the binding, and GLY207 contributed to a hydrogen bond. Nontargeted metabolomics using LC-MS and GC-MS identified differentially expressed metabolites in TDCPP treatments, mainly from lipid and lipid-like molecules, especially sphingolipids. TDCPP decreased ganglioside content but stimulated ceramide generation and the expression levels of 3 genes related to ceramide de novo synthesis. The mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and ATP content decreased, and the electron respiratory chain complex and TCA cycle were deactivated. An inhibitor of ceramide synthase, fumonisin, alleviated MMP and ATP, implying a critical role of ceramide in mitochondrial dysfunction. Thus, TDCPP exposure caused an energy supply deficit affecting ciliary movement and ultimately inhibiting rotifer behaviors. Overall, this study promotes the understanding of the neurotoxicity of Cl-OPEs in marine invertebrates.

Wastewater and seawater monitoring in Antarctica: Passive sampling as a powerful strategy to evaluate emerging pollution

The Ross Sea, among the least human-impacted marine environments worldwide, recently became the first marine protected area in Antarctica. To assess the impact of the Italian research station Mario Zucchelli (MZS) on the surrounding waters, passive sampling - as well as spot sampling for comparison - took place in the effluent of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the receiving surface marine waters. Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) were deployed for six consecutive 2-week periods from November to February in a reservoir collecting the wastewater effluent. Passive samplers were also deployed at shallow depth offshore from the wastewater effluent outlet from MZS for two separate 3-week periods (November 2021 and January 2022). Grab water samples were collected alongside each POCIS deployment, for comparison with passive sampling results. POCIS, used for the first time in Antarctica, demonstrated to be advantageous to estimate time-averaged concentrations in waters and the results were comparable to those obtained by repeated spot samplings. Among the 23 studied ECs - including drugs, UV-filters, perfluorinated substances, caffeine - 15 were detected in both grab and passive sampling in the WWTP effluent and followed similar concentration profiles in both types of sampling. High concentrations of caffeine, naproxen and ketoprofen in the dozens of μg L-1 were detected. Other compounds, including drugs and several UV filters, were detected down to sub- μg L-1 concentrations. In marine waters close to the effluent output, only traces of a drug (4.8 ng L-1) and two UV filters (up to 0.04 μg L-1) were quantified.

Tracing Organophosphate Ester Pollutants in Hadal Trenches─Distribution, Possible Origins, and Transport Mechanisms

Unraveling the mysterious pathways of pollutants to the deepest oceanic realms holds critical importance for assessing the integrity of remote marine ecosystems. This study tracks the transport of pollutants into the depths of the oceans, a key step in protecting the sanctity of these least explored ecosystems. By analyzing hadal trench samples from the Mariana, Mussau, and New Britain trenches, we found the widespread distribution of organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants but a complex transport pattern for the OPE in these regions. In the Mariana Trench seawater column, OPE concentrations range between 17.4 and 102 ng L-1, with peaks at depths of 500 and 4000 m, which may be linked to Equatorial Undercurrent and topographic Rossby waves, respectively. Sediments, particularly in Mariana (422 ng g-1 dw), showed high OPE affinity, likely due to organic matter serving as a transport medium, influenced by "solvent switching", "solvent depletion", and "filtering processes". Amphipods in the three trenches had consistent OPE levels (29.1-215 ng g-1 lipid weight), independent of the sediment pollution patterns. The OPEs in these amphipods appeared more linked to surface-dwelling organisms, suggesting the influence of "solvent depletion". This study highlights the need for an improved understanding of deep-sea pollutant sources and transport, urging the establishment of protective measures for these remote marine habitats.

Fate of organophosphate esters from the Northwestern Pacific to the Southern Ocean: Occurrence, distribution, and fugacity model simulation

Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the air and seawater were investigated from the northwestern Pacific Ocean to the Southern Ocean during the 2018 Chinese 34th Antarctic Scientific Expedition. The concentration of total OPEs ranged from 164.82 to 3501.79 pg/m3 in air and from 4.54 to 70.09 ng/L in seawater. Two halogenated OPEs, tri(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), were generally more abundant than the non-halogenated OPEs. A level III fugacity model was developed to simulate the transfer and fate of seven OPEs in the air and seawater regions of the central Ross Sea. The model results indicate that OPEs are transferred from the air to the seawater in the central Ross Sea in summer, during which the Ross Sea acts as a final OPE sink. Dry and wet deposition dominated the processes involving OPE transfer to seawater. The OPE degradation process was also found to be more pervasive in the atmosphere than in the seawater region. These findings highlights the importance of long-range transport of OPEs and their air-seawater interface behavior in the Antarctic.

Occurrence and diffusive air-seawater exchanges of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Fildes Bay, King George Island, Antarctica

We report the levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in seawater and air, and the air-sea dynamics through diffusive exchange analysis in Fildes Bay, King George Island, Antarctica, between November 2019 and January 30, 2020. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was the most abundant compound in both air and seawater with concentrations around 39 ± 2.1 pg m-3 and 3.2 ± 2.4 pg L-1 respectively. The most abundant PCB congener was PCB 11, with a mean of 3.16 ± 3.7 pg m-3 in air and 2.0 ± 1.1 pg L-1 in seawater. The fugacity gradient estimated for the OCP compounds indicate a predominance of net atmospheric deposition for HCB, α-HCH, γ-HCH, 4,4'-DDT, 4,4'-DDE and close to equilibrium for the PeCB compound. The observed deposition of some OCs may be driven by high biodegradation rates and/or settling fluxes decreasing the concentration of these compounds in surface waters, which is supported by the capacity of microbial consortium to degrade some of these compounds. The estimated fugacity gradients for PCBs showed differences between congeners, with net volatilization predominating for PCB-9, a trend close to equilibrium for PCB congeners 11, 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, and 153, and deposition for PCB 180. Snow amplification may play an important role for less hydrophobic PCBs, with volatilization predominating after snow/glacier melting. As hydrophobicity increases, the biological pump decreases the concentration of PCBs in seawater, reversing the fugacity gradient to atmospheric deposition. This study highlights the potential impacts of climate change, through glacier retreat, on the biogeochemistry of POPs, remobilizing those compounds previously trapped within the cryosphere which in turn will transform the Antarctic cryosphere into a secondary source of the more volatile POPs in coastal areas, influenced by snow and ice melting.

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) levels in air and surface sea waters along the Antarctic Peninsula

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are widespread worldwide, even reaching polar regions. Among POPs, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and their metabolites have been reported scarcely in the Antarctic environment. Here we report the levels of p,p'-DDT, o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, and o,p'-DDE in air and water samples collected during austral summer 2009. The levels found ranged from 0.25 to 4.26 pg m-3 in the atmospheric samples while in the water samples ranged from 0.07 to 0.25 pg L-1. These concentrations were within the range of the reported concentrations in the last 20 years in Antarctica. However, the source ratio showed that most of p,p'-DDT comes from fresh applications and Dicofol formulations. The back-trajectories estimated for the air masses revealed that most of the p,p'-DDT came from the continental Antarctic peninsula and surrounding waters. The diffusive exchange direction showed that Antarctic surface waters are the final sink of the studied compounds during the survey period.

Spatial distribution and source identification of phthalates and organochlorine compounds in Galician mussels (NW Spain)

The spatial distribution of five phthalate esters (PAEs) and 17 organochlorine compounds (OCs) in wild and raft mussels from Galician littoral collected in 2020, and its relationship with anthropogenic activities was studied in this work. The Rías de Foz and Muros-Noia were the most polluted by PAEs, while the Rías de Ferrol and Barqueiro by PCBs. The highest levels of all contaminants were present in wild mussel, except DEHP that were predominant in raft mussel. The levels of most PAEs were negatively correlated with levels of the lower chlorinated PCBs and OCPs. The spatial distribution of pollutants confirmed by PCA was affected by the proximity to anthropogenic sources, phthalates by urban wastewater and PCBs by industrial inputs, mainly. The study of human exposure assessment suggests that Risk Quotient values were < 1, so the consumption of Galician raft mussels did not pose a risk to human health.

Role of Microbes in the degradation of organic semivolatile compounds in polar ecosystems: A review

The Arctic and the Antarctic Continent correspond to two eco-regions with extreme climatic conditions. These regions are exposed to the presence of contaminants resulting from human activity (local and global), which, in turn, represent a challenge for life forms in these environments. Anthropogenic pollution by semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in polar ecosystems has been documented since the 1960s. Currently, various studies have shown the presence of SVOCs and their bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the polar regions with negative effects on biodiversity and the ecosystem. Although the production and use of these compounds has been regulated, their persistence continues to threaten biodiversity and the ecosystem. Here, we summarize the current literature regarding microbes and SVOCs in polar regions and pose that bioremediation by native microorganisms is a feasible strategy to mitigate the presence of SVOCs. Our systematic review revealed that microbial communities in polar environments represent a wide reservoir of biodiversity adapted to extreme conditions, found both in terrestrial and aquatic environments, freely or in association with vegetation. Microorganisms adapted to these environments have the potential for biodegradation of SVOCs through a variety of genes encoding enzymes with the capacity to metabolize SVOCs. We suggest that a comprehensive approach at the molecular and ecological level is required to mitigate SVOCs presence in these regions. This is especially patent when considering that SVOCs degrade at slow rates and possess the ability to accumulate in polar ecosystems. The implications of SVOC degradation are relevant for the preservation of polar ecosystems with consequences at a global level.

Monitoring persistent organic chemicals in Antarctica in support of global chemical policy: a horizon scan of priority actions and challenges

Global production and emission of chemicals exceeds societal capacities for assessment and monitoring. This situation calls for improved chemical regulatory policy frameworks and increased support for expedited decision making within existing frameworks. The polar regions of the Earth represent unique sentinel areas for the study of global chemical behaviour, and data arising from these areas can strengthen existing policy frameworks. However, chemical pollution research and monitoring in the Antarctic is underdeveloped, with geopolitical complexities and the absence of legal recognition of international chemical policy serving to neutralise progress made in other global regions. This Personal View represents a horizon scan by the action group Input Pathways of Persistent Organic Pollutants to Antarctica, of the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research. Four priority research and research facilitation gaps are outlined, with recommendations for Antarctica Treaty parties for strategic action against these priorities.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Fildes Peninsula, maritime Antarctica: Effects of human disturbance

This study provides the first data on the distribution, sources, and transport dynamics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica via summertime analyses of lakes, seawater, snow, and air in 2013. Relatively high PAH levels and similar composition profiles (dominance of two- and three-ring PAHs) in the investigated marine and terrestrial environmental matrices were found, indicating substantial primary emissions of petrogenic PAHs. This result was corroborated by nonequilibrium partitioning of atmospheric PAHs caused by release of anthropically-derived lighter PAHs and air mass movement trajectories mainly originated from the Antarctic marginal seas. Notable geographical disparities of PAH pollution in the various types of samples consistently suggested impacts of station-related activities, rather than long-range atmospheric transport, on PAHs in Fildes Peninsula. The lack for temperature dependence for gas-phase concentrations and various molecular diagnostic ratios of atmospheric PAHs demonstrated that the impact of local anthropogenic inputs on air PAH variability supersedes the re-emission effect. The derived air-water and air-snow exchanges of PAHs in this remote region indicated a disequilibrium state, partially associated with intense local emissions of PAHs. PAH outgassing from, and absorption into, lake and marine waters were both observed, probably due to differences in anthropogenic influences among sites, while the net deposition of gaseous PAHs into snow prevailed. The results of this study shed lights on the major importance of native anthropogenic sources in the footprint and fate of PAHs in the Fildes Peninsula, which merits further monitoring.

Dissolved legacy and emerging organochlorine pesticides in the Antarctic marginal seas: Occurrence, sources and transport

Polar regions are recognized as final sinks of the persistent contaminants, however, environmental investigations in the Antarctica are greatly limited by harsh field conditions. In this study, seawater samples were collected in the Antarctic marginal seas during the austral summer of 2021 to investigate the environmental behavior and fate of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). The concentrations and source markers of representative legacy hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) indicated the coexistent sources of historical residues and fresh inputs. While the emerging OCPs, including quintozene, pentachloroaniline and dichlobenil, showed relatively lower detection frequency. Due to the differences in temperature and sea ice coverage, dissolved OCPs generally displayed higher concentrations in the eastern Antarctic than those in the western Antarctic. The 'surface depleted and depth enrichment' vertical profile of representative OCPs in the continental shelf of Prydz Bay was jointly controlled by biological pump and water mass structure.

Spatio-temporal variations and ecological risks of organochlorine pesticides in surface waters of a plateau lake in China

Qilu Lake is one of the 9 plateau lakes in Yunnan, China, with a lake surface altitude of 1796.62 m above sea level. In spite of the importance and agriculturally-intensive phenomenon in Qilu Lake Basin, few studies have provided a modern evaluation of pesticide residues and potential effects to local aquatic organisms. The primary goal of this study was to determine the spatio-temporal variations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in this area, and to further assess the related ecological risks. Of the 25 OCPs analyzed, 14 were detected, and the concentrations of ∑₂₅OCPs were highest in the upstream of rivers, followed by regions close to the lake shore, and the lowest concentrations were found in Qilu Lake in every season except winter. The concentrations of ∑₂₅OCPs were the highest in summer, and the lowest in winter. OCP concentrations in spring and in autumn were similar. 4,4'-DDD, γ-HCH, HCB, trans-chlordane, and cis-chlordane were 5 OCPs with relatively high risk in Qilu Lake Basin. Interestingly, higher OCP concentrations do not necessarily correspond to higher ecological risk levels. Low predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) values and relatively high toxicity of these OCPs led to their high risk quotient (RQ) values. This work further illustrated that although OCPs have been banned for many years, they were still frequently detected in surface waters, and caused risks to aquatic animals.

Legacy and emerging organic contaminants in the polar regions

The presence of numerous emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) and remobilization of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in polar regions have become significant concerns of the scientific communities, public groups and stakeholders. This work reviews the occurrences of EOCs and POPs and their long-range environmental transport (LRET) processes via atmosphere and ocean currents from continental sources to polar regions. Concentrations of classic POPs have been systematically monitored in air at several Arctic stations and showed seasonal variations and declining trends. These chemicals were also the major POPs reported in the Antarctica, while their concentrations were lower than those in the Arctic, illustrating the combination of remoteness and lack of potential local sources for the Antarctica. EOCs were investigated in air, water, snow, ice and organisms in the Arctic. Data in the Antarctica are rare. Reemission of legacy POPs and EOCs accumulated in glaciers, sea ice and snow may alter the concentrations and amplify their effects in polar regions. Thus, future research will need to understand the various biogeochemical and geophysical processes under climate change and anthropogenic pressures.

Organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in high mountain lakes, Mexico

Pollution levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in the El Sol and the La Luna alpine lakes. The lakes are located in central Mexico, in the crater of the Nevado de Toluca volcano. The El Sol and the La Luna lakes are extremely relevant in Mexico and in the world because they are recognized as pristine regions and environmental reservoirs. Samples of atmospheric aerosol, sediment, plankton, and Tubifex tubifex (sludge worm) were collected at three different sample locations for three years (2017, 2018, and 2019) at three different times of year, meaning that the weather conditions at the time of sampling were different. Pollutants were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with negative chemical ionisation (GC-MS/NCI). Endosulfan was the most frequent and abundant pollutant, showing the highest peaks of all. Atmospheric aerosol revealed Σ₂ = 45 pg/m³, including α and β, while sediment lakes displayed α, β and endosulfan sulfate as Σ₃ = 1963 pg/g, whereas plankton and Tubifex tubifex showed Σ₂ = 576 pg/g and 540 pg/g for α and β respectively. Results of endosulfan ratios (α/β) and (α-β/endosulfan sulfate) suggest that both fresh and old discharges continue to arrive at the lakes. This study shows for the first time the pollution levels of OCP and PCB in high mountain lakes in Mexico. These results that must be considered by policy makers to mitigate their use in the various productive activities of the region.

Exploring the influence of concentration fluctuation and matrix effects on a passive sampler of triolein-embedded cellulose acetate membrane measuring polychlorinated biphenyls in water

A membrane of triolein-embedded cellulose acetate membrane (TECAM), as an integrative passive sampler, was applied to adsorb 28 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from pure water and sea water in order to probe into the influence of concentration fluctuation and water matrix. The results demonstrated the temporal variations of PCBs concentrations in TECAM followed the first-order kinetics model. The periodic refreshment of solution and matrix effects of sea water significantly prolonged the time that PCBs reached equilibrium stage. The refreshment facilitated the uptake mass in TECAM. On the contrary, the matrix effects of sea water and dissolved organic matter (DOM) declined the PCBs absorption to TECAM. The average logK_P values of PCBs in pure water were about 1.2 log unit higher than those in sea water in the experiments that the solution was not refreshed, while the difference of average logK_P values narrowed to 0.3 log unit if the PCBs solutions were periodically refreshed. The correlation between logK_P and logK_OW values fitted the quadratic curve well, which was similar to semi-permeable membrane device (SPMD). The appropriate sampling times (t_94%) ranged from 98.8 to 819 h (mean 500 h) for pure water with refreshment, much longer than those in sea water with refreshment (80.1~410 h, mean 189 h). The t_94% values in the solution with high DOM content increased significantly, up to 409 h. Furthermore,  comparing the two experiments that the spiked pure water and sea water solution were refreshed frequently, the estimated sampling rates (R_s) in pure water (0.154~2.06 L/day with a mean value of 0.605 L/day) were slightly lower than those in sea water (0.292~3.84 L/day with a mean value of 1.69 L/day). However, the R_s values in sea water with DOM declined sharply to 0.042 L/day. Therefore, concentration fluctuation, matrix effect, and DOM contents of sea water evidently posed significant influence on dynamic parameters of TECAM absorption, which would be screened and probed detailed in future.

Source and Distribution of Emerging and Legacy Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Basins of the Eastern Indian Ocean

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have received significant and ongoing attention. To establish favorable regulatory policies, it is vital to investigate the occurrence, source, and budgets of POPs worldwide. POPs including phthalic acid esters (PAEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and highly chlorinated flame retardants (HFRs) have not yet been examined in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO). In this study, the distribution of POPs has been investigated from surface sediments with the depth of 4369-5742 m in the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) and Wharton Basin (WB) of EIO. The average (±SD) concentrations of ∑₁₁PAEs, ∑₁₁OPEs, ∑₄ BFRs, and ∑₅HFRs were 1202.0 ± 274.36 ng g^-1 dw, 15.3 ± 7.23 ng g^-1 dw, 327.6 ± 211.74 pg g^-1 dw, and 7.9 ± 7.45 pg g^-1 dw, respectively. The high abundance of low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAEs, chlorinated OPEs, LMW BDEs, and anti-Dechlorane Plus indicated the pollution characteristics in the EIO. Correlation analysis demonstrated that LMW compounds may be derived from the high-molecular-weight compounds. The monsoon circulation, currents, and Antarctic Bottom Water may be the main drivers. POP accumulation rate, depositional flux, and mass inventory in the Indian Ocean were also estimated.

Integrated passive sampling and fugacity model to characterize fate and removal of organophosphate flame retardants in an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic municipal wastewater treatment system

It is crucial to deeply understand the fate and removal mechanism of various organophosphate flame retardants (PFRs) in specified wastewater treatment processes. However, concentration fluctuation and matrix effect in wastewater challenge quantification of PFR flux for both field observation and model validation. We present measured seasonal distribution profiles of time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations by in situ hydrophobic and polar passive samplers and modeled mass transport and transformation by means of fugacity for 11 PFRs with varied structures in an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A-A-O) municipal wastewater treatment system, and provided a systematic approach to characterize fate and removal mechanism of PFRs in major compartments via various treatment processes. We find evidence that PFRs have a unique structural-dependent fate and removal in the A-A-O system. Hydrophilic chlorinated-PFRs present persistent in all major compartments and dominate in effluents with significant variations; alkyl-PFRs are majorly reduced by biodegradation; whereas hydrophobic aryl-PFRs have the highest removal percentage, contributed by both sorption on solids and biotransformation. Sensitive analysis shows the most influential operation parameters on removal efficiency varied among the PFRs with different properties. We also conclude passive sampling can be effectively applied to estimate TWA wastewater concentrations and to validate fugacity model prediction.

Accumulation and passive sampling of bisphenol analogues using triolein-embedded cellulose acetate membrane in waters

Bisphenol analogues (BPs) are emerging contaminants that have been widely detected in water environments. The presence of substituted hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups in the molecule may lead to unclear performance in passive sampling. This study tested the accumulation capacity and passive sampling of fifteen BPs in a triolein-embedded cellulose acetate membrane (TECAM) passive sampler. In a dynamic accumulation experiment, twelve hydrophobic BPs accumulated in the TECAM with concentrations ranging from 251 ng g^-1 to 6283 ng g^-1, and three hydrophilic BPs did not accumulate during the 72 h exposure duration. BPs accumulations were determined by the hydrophilic and hydrophobic substituent groups in molecule structures. The estimated passive sampling parameters showed correlations to both the log K_ow values and chemical structures, and compared to other contaminants, such as organophosphorus flame retardants. Environmental factors, including flow rate, temperature, salinity, and pH, that affect the accumulation of BPs in the TECAM were tested, and the flow rate was found to be an important factor affecting the uptake rate. The isotropic exchange kinetics for BPs in the TECAM were verified, and the results indicated that BPs can be calibrated with performance reference compounds (PRCs) in field applications. Finally, a field deployment of TECAM in river waters successfully estimated the time-weighted concentrations of two hydrophobic BPs. To address the inherent weaknesses of TECAM in sampling hydrophilic and moderately hydrophobic BPs, future studies should explore alternative passive samplers, such as hydrophilic-lipophilic balance sorbent-embedded cellulose acetate membranes, to sample BPs in surface waters.

Spatial pattern analysis reveals multiple sources of organophosphorus flame retardants in coastal waters

Organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) are a group of emerging contaminants which have been detected in worldwide waters. However, source of various PFRs in the large-scale area like coastal water environment have not been clearly revealed. In this study, fifteen PFRs in coast of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area (GBA), China were investigated, and a method of spatial pattern analysis was firstly used for pollution source identification. Seawater samples from different segments of GBA coast were analyzed and thirteen PFRs were quantified with total concentrations ranging from 32.7 to 1032.7 ng L^-1. GBA coasts have been seriously polluted by PFRs. A hierarchical cluster analysis of the PFR concentrations in different GBA sites showed significant spatial distributions for different types of PFRs. A series of correlation analysis between PFRs distributions and spatial pattern of GBA socio-economic indicators were performed, and multiple sources including human settlement, wastewater, manufacture, construction industry, vehicles, and shipping transport were found to be correlated to PFRs pollutions in the coasts. This study indicates that spatial pattern analysis based on statistical analysis would be a promising method of analyzing environmental data and exploring pollution source in large-scale area.

Long-Range Transport, Trophic Transfer, and Ecological Risks of Organophosphate Esters in Remote Areas

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been a focus in the field of environmental science due to their large volume production, wide range of applications, ubiquitous occurrence, potential bioaccumulation, and worrisome ecological and health risks. Varied physicochemical properties among OPE analogues represent an outstanding scientific challenge in studying the environmental fate of OPEs in recent years. There is an increasing number of studies focusing on the long-range transport, trophic transfer, and ecological risks of OPEs. Therefore, it is necessary to conclude the OPE pollution status on a global scale, especially in the remote areas with vulnerable and fragile ecosystems. The present review links together the source, fate, and environmental behavior of OPEs in remote areas, integrates the occurrence and profile data, summarizes their bioaccumulation, trophic transfer, and ecological risks, and finally points out the predominant pollution burden of OPEs among organic pollutants in remote areas. Given the relatively high contamination level and bioaccumulation/biomagnification behavior of OPEs, in combination with the sensitivity of endemic species in remote areas, more attention should be paid to the potential ecological risks of OPEs.

Spatial distribution of cumulative impact on terrestrial ecosystem of the Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica

Antarctica, an area that is devoted to global peace and research, is being challenged by climate change, human activities, and pollution. There have been a number of studies concerning the state of the Antarctic ecological environment. However, a comprehensive and quantitative assessment of the impact of threats on the Antarctica ecological environment is still lacking. In this study, a cumulative impact assessment performed on the basis of expert judgement was used to estimate species-specific differences on the impact of seven threats: climate change, organic and nonorganic pollutants, station construction, power generation, oil spilling, and tourism. The terrestrial area of the Fildes Peninsula was divided into 103 cells using a raster grid of 0.25 km², and cumulative impact assessment was applied to each cell. The analysis results indicated that cumulative impact scores (I_C) ranged from 0 to 39.4, and the cumulative scores were divided into six categories ranging from very low impact (I_C ≤ 7.08) to very high impact (I_C > 20.54). More than half of the terrestrial area (57.3%) experienced "Very Low Impact" or "Low impact" scores. For single factors, climate change was identified as a rapidly growing and significant threat facing the terrestrial ecosystems of Antarctica. In addition, tourism had the greatest impact among all human activities. The analytical process and resulting map indicate that it is necessary to develop international policies on the restriction of tourist activity space and strength the organic pollutant controls for terrestrial ecosystem protection in the Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica.

Atmospheric organophosphate esters in the Western Antarctic Peninsula over 2014-2018: Occurrence, temporal trend and source implication

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) were comprehensively investigated in the air samples collected using high-volume samplers near the Chinese Great Wall Station in the Western Antarctic Peninsula over the period of 2014-2018. The concentrations of ∑₈OPEs (gaseous + particle phases) ranged from 33.9 to 404 pg/m³ with a geometric mean of 119 ± 12.0 pg/m³. Tris [(2R)-1-chloro-2-propyl] phosphate (TCIPP) and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) dominated in the gaseous phase, while tris-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) was the most abundant OPEs in the particle phase, followed by TCIPP and TCEP. An apparently temporal trend was observed for atmospheric ∑₈OPEs over the five years, with a doubling time of about 3.8 years, which indicated continuous inputs of OPEs into the sampling area. The particle-bound ∑₈OPEs accounted for 45% of the total, generally lower than that reported in the Arctic. Gas-particle partitioning modeling suggested that the partitioning of OPEs with higher logK_OA values approached the steady state in the Antarctic air. The back-trajectory modeling showed that high levels of OPEs were usually associated with air inputs from the northwest of the peninsula. This suggested that long-range transport from South America, which was confirmed by the no temperature dependencies of OPEs concentrations (excluding TnBP). Nevertheless, a steady high level of particle-bound TnBP implied local sources in the Western Antarctic Peninsula, which required further investigation in future works.

Occurrence of legacy and emerging organic contaminants in snow at Dome C in the Antarctic

Concentrations of 9 organophosphate esters (OPEs), 16 perfluoroalkylated substances (PFASs) and 17 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in surface snow samples collected at Dome C on the Antarctic Plateau in summer 2016. Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tri-n-butylphosphate (TnBP) were the dominant compounds of OPEs, with mean concentrations of 8157 ± 4860, 1128 ± 928 and 1232 ± 1147 pg/L. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, mean: 358 ± 71 pg/L) was the dominant compound of PFASs, and following by perfluoro-n-hexanoic acid (PFHxA, mean: 222 ± 97 pg/L), perfluoro-n-heptanoic acid (PFHpA, 183 ± 60 pg/L) and perfluoro-n-pentanoic acid (PFPeA, 175 ± 105 pg/L). 2-(Heptafluoropropoxy)propanoic acid (HFPO-DA, mean: 9.2 ± 2.6 pg/L) was determined in the Antarctic for the first time. Significantly positive correlations were observed between HFPO-DA and the short-chain PFASs, implying they have similar emission sources and long-range transport potential. High levels of 2-methylnaphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene, as well as the ratios of PAH congeners indicated PAHs were attributable mostly to combustion origin. Occurrence and profiles of the indicators of OPEs, PFASs and PAHs, as well as air mass back-trajectory analysis provided direct evidences of human activities on Concordia station and posed obvious impacts on local environments in the Antarctic. Nevertheless, the exchange processes among different environmental matrices may drive the long-range transport and redistribution of the legacy and emerging Organic contaminants from coast to inland in the Antarctic.

Distribution, sources and transport of organophosphorus flame retardants in the water and sediment of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, the Arctic

Organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) are contaminants of emerging concern which have been detected globally. However, little information on PFRs in the Arctic freshwater environment is currently available. In this study, both hydrophilic and hydrophobic PFRs in the water and sediment of four areas (town, surroundings, coastal marine water, and glacier melt runoff) near Ny-Ålesund Svalbard were investigated by time-integrated passive sampling (water) and grab sampling (sediment). Seven kinds of PFRs were found in the Arctic waters with individual freely dissolved concentrations from 0.007 ng L^-1 to 355 ng L^-1, and the concentrations of chlorinated PFRs were 3-4 orders of magnitude higher than those of non-chlorinated PFRs. The distribution of different PFRs in freshwater showed significant spatial differences among the different areas, and the town was found to have most kinds of PFRs and highest PFRs concentrations. The sources and transport of different kinds of PFRs were explored based on a spatial overlay analysis of the contaminant distributions, environmental conditions, and PFR applications. As a result, human settlements, industrial activities, atmospheric deposition, and transportation in Ny-Ålesund were proposed to be related to the pollution of different PFRs at Ny-Ålesund. The PFRs in the inshore marine water were found to be affected by both local ship contamination and ocean current transport. Furthermore, nine PFRs were detected in the sediments of Ny-Ålesund. Accumulation of different PFRs in the Arctic sediment was found to be dominated by their physico-chemical properties (polarity).

First assessment of pollutant exposure in two balaenopterid whale populations sampled in the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway

Pollutant concentrations are poorly known for the largest animals on Earth, blue whales Balaenoptera musculus and fin whales Balaenoptera physalus. In this study, concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were determined in blubber biopsies and stable isotope values for nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) and carbon (δ¹³C) were measured using skin biopsies for 18 blue whales and 12 fin whales sampled in waters surrounding the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. The samples were collected in summer during the period 2014-2018. POPs were dominated by DDTs, PCBs and toxaphenes, with median concentrations in blue/fin whales being 208/341, 127/275 and 133/233 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. Linear models indicated that pollutant concentrations were 1.6-3 times higher in fin whales than in blue whales, which is likely related to the higher trophic positions of fin whales, as indicated by their higher δ¹⁵N. Lower δ¹³C in fin whales suggests that they feed at higher latitudes than blue whales; these values were not correlated with pollutant concentrations. Pollutant levels were approximately twice as high in males compared to females (intraspecifically), which indicates that females of these species offload pollutants to their offspring during gestation and lactation, similar to many other mammalian species. Pollutant concentrations in balaenopterid whales from Svalbard waters were generally much lower than in conspecific whales from the Mediterranean Sea or the Gulf of California, but higher than those in conspecifics from the Antarctic Peninsula.

Development of predictive models for silicone rubber-water partition coefficients of hydrophobic organic contaminants

The silicone rubber passive sampling technique is extensively applied to monitor the aqueous freely dissolved concentration of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs). The silicone rubber-water partition coefficient (Ksrw) is an important parameter to accurately measure the concentrations of chemicals using passive sampling devices. In this study, two theoretical linear solvation energy relationship (TLSER) models and a quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) model were developed for predicting the Ksrw of HOCs. The 119 model compounds studied here included 31 personal care products, such as musks, UV-filters, and organophosphate flame retardants, as well as "conventional" pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls. The statistical parameters indicated that the final QSPR model with seven descriptors for all 119 chemicals had a satisfactory goodness-of-fit (Radj2 = 0.898), robustness (QLOO2 = 0.881) and predictive ability (Qext-F1,2,32 = 0.897-0.926). In comparison, the results of one TLSER model with four descriptors for 113 chemicals (Radj2 = 0.826, QLOO2 = 0.790, Qext-F1,2,32 = 0.805-0.837) and another TLSER model with one descriptor for 5 chemicals (Radj2 = 0.747, QLOO2 = 0.647) were also acceptable. The applicability domains of the obtained models covered chemicals containing hydroxyl, imino groups, carbonyl groups, ether bonds, halogen atoms, sulfur atoms, phosphorus atoms, nitro groups, and cyano groups. In addition, the structural features governing the partition behavior of chemicals between silicone rubber and water were explored through interpretation of appropriate mechanisms.

Organophosphorus flame retardants and persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic contaminants in Arctic seawaters: On-board passive sampling coupled with target and non-target analysis

Organic pollutants in the Arctic seas have been of concern to many researchers; however, the vast dynamic marine water poses challenges to their comprehensive monitoring within appropriate spatial and temporal scales in the Arctic. In this study, on-board passive sampling of organic pollutants using a self-developed device coupled with triolein-embedded cellulose acetate membranes (TECAMs) was performed during an Arctic cruise. The TECAM extracts were used for target analysis of organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs), and non-target screening of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) contaminants using two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOFMS). Sixteen chemicals were screened out as PBT contaminants from the 1500 features in the non-target analysis and further identified. Consequently, two chlorinated PFRs (tris(chloroisopropyl)phosphate and tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl)phosphate) and four PBT contaminants (4-tert-butylphenol, 2-isopropylnaphthalene, 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindane, and 1-phenylnonan-1-one) were accurately quantified, with the temporally and spatially integrated concentrations ranging from 0.83 ng L^-1 to 20.82 ng L^-1 in the seawaters. Sources and transport of the contaminants were studied, and ocean current transport (West Spitsbergen Current, WSC) and local sources (human settlement, Arctic oil exploitation, and petroleum fuel emissions) were found to contribute to the presence of the different contaminants. Finally, annual transport fluxes of the contaminants from the North Atlantic to the Arctic Ocean by WSC were estimated, and the results indicate that their hazard to the Arctic should be concerned.
