Comparative study of organic contaminants in agricultural soils at the archipelagos of the Macaronesia

Occurrence, persistence and risk assessment of pesticide residues in European wheat fields: A continental scale approach

Pesticide residues in agricultural soils represent an environmental concern that requires special attention due to their potential ecological and public health risks. We analyzed 614 pesticides in 188 wheat fields across Europe subjected to both conventional and organic farming systems. At least one pesticide residue was detected in 141 soils. Seventy-eight pesticides or their metabolites were detected. The presence of pesticides was significantly higher in both number and concentration in conventional fileds (up to 0.98 mg kg-1) compared to organically managed sites (up to 0.40 mg kg-1). A total of 88 % of conventional fields and 63 % of organic fields contained two or more pesticides. Conversion from conventional to organic farming does not guarantee that soils will be pesticide-free in the short term. Fenbutatin oxide was the most frequently detected pesticide in both farming systems, followed by AMPA. Other substances, such as boscalid, epoxiconazole, diflufenican, tebuconazole, dinoterb, bixafen, and DEET, were found in ≥ 10 % of samples. Some Persistent Organic Pollutants, including dieldrin, endosulfan sulphate, and chlorpyrifos, were also detected. Ecological risks were higher in conventionally managed fields, with 46 % exhibiting high-risk levels, compared to just 1 % in organic fields. Epoxiconazole and boscalid were the substances with the highest risk levels.

The common kestrel as an environmental bioindicator of toxic chemicals on Tenerife Island (Canary Islands, Spain)

Indirect effects of toxic chemicals, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), affect non-target species like apex predators due to bioaccumulation in food webs. The common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus canariensis), an endemic subspecies from the Canary Islands and Madeira, was evaluated as a bioindicator to assess contamination by organic pollutants in Tenerife. A total of 390 liver samples, collected between 2003 and 2021, were analysed for 341 toxic compounds including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and POPs like PCBs, PBDEs, PAHs and OCPs. Results revealed widespread contamination: 97.7% of kestrels had DDE, and 94.6% had PCB, with congener #180 being the most prevalent. BDE-153 was detected in 32.3% of samples and PAH, predominantly naphthalene, in 36.9%. Additionally, we identified four fungicides, five insecticides, one herbicide, and the acaricide tetradifon, marking the first report of these substances in raptors globally. Generalised Linear Models (GLM) and Linear Models (LM) indicated that adults had significantly higher levels of OCP and PCB, and PBDE exposure. Males exhibited significantly higher levels of PCBs and were more likely to be exposed to PBDEs. A decline in the concentrations and presence of OCPs, PCBs, and PBDEs was observed during the second study period (2003-2009 vs. 2017-2021). For PAHs, the null model was the best fit, indicating that the factors examined (sex, age, human density, cultivated area or period) did not have a significantly influence on exposure. This comprehensive, long-term study, represents a pioneering investigation in the Canary Islands, demonstrating the utility of the common kestrel as a bioindicator of environmental pollution.

Beyond the threshold - Different accumulation of organochlorine compounds in common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) inhabiting continental and insular ecosystems in the Northeast Atlantic

Assessing persistent organic pollutant (POP) levels across regions helps evaluate environmental health and determine ecological risks. As an apex predator, the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) serves as an excellent model for understanding POP exposure and impact in Eastern North Atlantic marine ecosystems. In this study, we collected biopsy samples of common dolphins in two ecoregions, the pelagic system of Madeira Island (Portugal) (n = 30) and in the continental shelf of Northwest Portugal (n = 14) to analyse organochlorine concentrations (PCBs, DDTs, Mirex, HCB) from their blubber. For both ecoregions, PCBs comprised the largest proportion of the total measured organochlorines (60% in Madeira Island and 85% in Northwest Portugal), followed by DDTs, and lastly, HCB. Considerable differences in the organochlorine profile were identified between samples from Madeira and Northwest Portugal, with common dolphins showing higher PCB loads in Northwest Portugal (53 ± 37 μg g-1 lw) compared to Madeira Island (11 ± 4.8 μg g -1 lw). The high levels of PCBs found in individuals from mainland Portugal - reaching values up to 140 μg g-1 lw - are some of the highest reported for the species worldwide, considerably exceeding toxicity thresholds. This is of particular concern as they may be potentially affecting important physiological processes of the animals. These results highlight the poor habitat quality in one of the studied regions, with potential impacts on ecosystem health, while offering valuable insights into the population structure of a species that remains understudied for effective management and conservation.

Ecological consequences of antimicrobial residues and bioactive chemicals on antimicrobial resistance in agroecosystems

BACKGROUND

The widespread use of antimicrobials in agriculture, coupled with bioactive chemicals like pesticides and growth-promoting agents, has accelerated the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Agroecosystems provides a platform in the evolution and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which pose significant threats to both environmental and public health.

AIM OF REVIEW

This review explores the ecological consequences of antimicrobial residues and bioactive chemicals in agroecosystems, with a focus on their role in shaping AMR. It delves into the mechanisms by which these substances enter agricultural environments, their interactions with soil microbiomes, and the subsequent impacts on microbial community structure.

KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW

Evidence indicates that the accumulation of antimicrobials promotes resistance gene transfer among microorganisms, potentially compromising ecosystem health and agricultural productivity. By synthesizing current research, we identify critical gaps in knowledge and propose strategies for mitigating the ecological risks associated with antimicrobial residues. Moreover, this review highlights the urgent need for integrated management approaches to preserve ecosystem health and combat the spread of AMR in agricultural settings.

Environmental remediation of emerging contaminants using subcritical water: A review

The continuous rise of emerging contaminants (ECs) in the environment has been a growing concern due to their potentially harmful effects on humans, animals, plants, and aquatic life, even at low concentrations. ECs include human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, hormones, personal care products, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organic dyes, heavy metals (HMs), and others. The world's growing population contributes to the release of many kinds of chemicals into the environment, which is estimated to be more than 200 billion metric tons annually and results in over 9 million deaths. The removal of these contaminants using conventional physical, chemical, and biological treatments has proven to be ineffective, highlighting the need for simple, effective, inexpesive, practical, and eco-friendly alternatives. Thus, this article discusses the utilization of subcritical water oxidation (SBWO) and subcritical water extraction (SBWE) techniques to remove ECS from the environment. Subcritical water (water below the critical temperature of 374.15 °C and critical pressure of 22.1 Mpa) has emerged as one of the most promising methods for remediation of ECs from the environment due to its non-toxic properties, simplicity and efficiency of application. Furthermore, the impact of temperature, pressure, treatment time, and utilization of chelating agents, organic modifiers, and oxidizing agents in the static and dynamic modes was investigated to establish the best conditions for high ECs removal efficiencies.

Co-existing antibiotics alter the enantioselective dissipation characteristics of zoxamide and drive combined impact on soil microenvironment

Co-existence of antibiotics (ABX) in soil may expand the environmental harm of pesticide pollution. Our study investigated the combined effects of five antibiotics chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), enrofloxacin (ENR) on enantioselective fate of zoxamide (ZXM) and soil health. The results showed that S-(+)-ZXM preferentially dissipated in soil. ABX prolonged dissipation half-life and reduced enantioselectivity of ZXM. Soil was detected to be more acidic after long-term treatment of ZXM and ABX. Lowest soil available N, P, K were found in ZXM + SMX, ZXM + OTC and ZXM + SMX groups at 80 days, respectively. ABX had demonstrated effective promotion of catalase (S-CAT), urease (S-UE) and negative impact on dehydrogenase (S-DHA), sucrase (S-SC) activities. Bacteria Lysobacter, Sphingomonas and fungus Mortierella were identified as the most dominant genera, which possessed as potential microbial resources for removal of composite pollution from ZXM and ABX. SMX and TC, SMX, ENR, respectively, contributed to the alteration of bacteria and fungi community abundance. Soil acidity, available N and enzyme activity showed stronger correlations with bacteria and fungi compared to other environmental factors. Our findings highlighted the interactions between ZXM and ABX from the perspective of soil microenvironment changes. Moreover, a theoretical basis for the mechanism was actively provided.

New and legacy pesticidal persistent organic pollutants in the agricultural region of the Sultanate of Oman

Comprehensive air and surface soil monitoring was conducted for new and legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) to fill the knowledge and data gap on the sources and fate of pesticidal persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Sultanate of Oman. DDTs in agricultural soil samples ranged from 0.013 to 95.80 ng/g (mean: 8.4 ± 25.06 ng/g), with a median value of 0.07 ng/g. The highest concentration was observed at Shinas, where intensive agricultural practice is prevalent. The dominance of p,p'-DDT in soil and air reflected technical DDT formulation usage in Oman. Among newly enlisted POPs, pentachlorobenzene had the maximum detection frequency in air (47%) and soil (41%). Over 90% of sites reflected extensive past use of hexachlorobenzene. Major OCP isomers and metabolites showed net volatilisation from the agricultural soil, thereby indicating concurrent emission and re-emission processes from the soil of Oman. However, the cleansing effect of oceanic air mass is the possible reason for relatively lower atmospheric OCP levels from a previous study. Although DDT displayed maximum cancer risk, the level is below the permissible limit. DDT primarily stemmed from obsolete stock and inadequate management practices. Hence, we suggest there is a need for DDT regulation in Oman.

Naegleria australiensis isolated from a wastewater treatment station in Santiago Island, Cape Verde

Despite the Naegleria genus being isolated from different natural environments such as water, soil, and air, not all Naegleria species are capable of causing infections in humans, and they are capable of completing their life cycle in environmental niches. However, the presence of this genus may suggest the existence of one of the highly pathogenic free-living amoeba (FLA) species: Naegleria fowleri or the brain-eating amoeba. This facultative parasitic protozoon represents a risk to public health, mainly related to domestic and agricultural waters. In this research, our main objective was to determine the existence of pathogenic protozoa in the Santa Cruz wastewater treatment plant, Santiago Island. Using 5 L of water we confirmed the presence of potentially pathogenic Naegleria australiensis, being the first report on Naegleria species in Cape Verde. This fact demonstrates the low efficiency in the treatment of wastewater and, consequently, a potential threat to public health. Nevertheless, more studies will be needed for the prevention and control of possible infections in this Macaronesian country.

Surfactant-enhanced mobilization of persistent organic pollutants: Potential for soil and sediment remediation and unintended consequences

This review aims to provide an overview of the sources and reactions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and surfactants in soil and sediments, the surfactant-enhanced solubilisation of POPs, and the unintended consequences of surfactant-induced remediation of soil and sediments contaminated with POPs. POPs include chemical compounds that are recalcitrant to natural degradation through photolytic, chemical, and biological processes in the environment. POPs are potentially toxic compounds mainly used in pesticides, solvents, pharmaceuticals, or industrial applications and pose a significant and persistent risk to the ecosystem and human health. Surfactants can serve as detergents, wetting and foaming compounds, emulsifiers, or dispersants, and have been used extensively to promote the solubilization of POPs and their subsequent removal from environmental matrices, including solid wastes, soil, and sediments. However, improper use of surfactants for remediation of POPs may lead to unintended consequences that include toxicity of surfactants to soil microorganisms and plants, and leaching of POPs, thereby resulting in groundwater contamination.

Remediation of Methyl Red Dye from Aqueous Solutions by Using Biosorbents Developed from Floral Waste

The disposal of biological waste into water bodies is a major global concern as it leads to water pollution resulting in the loss of plenty of revenue in the cleaning of water bodies. Here, in the present research work, sacred flowers were collected, segregated, sun-dried, and powdered. The dried floral powders (marigold and rose) were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), electron diffraction spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microscopy revealed the irregular spherical shape of the sheet-like structure whose size varies in microns. The EDS revealed the elemental composition which was dominated by mainly carbon and oxygen. The XRD shows the presence of carbon (10-25ɵ) in the amorphous form and the absence of any crystalline phase in the biosorbents. The FT-IR showed peaks that conformed to the presence of functional groups like -OH and a carbonyl group. The dried powders were used as an economical and eco-friendly biosorbent for the removal of methyl red (MR) dye from the aqueous solutions by batch adsorption study. After 60 minutes of contact time, the marigold powder (MGP) and rose petal powder (RPP) showed decolorization of 61.16% and 56.08% for 2 ppm of MR dye. The kinetic revealed that the dye removal reaction does not follow the pseudo-first-order as well as the pseudo-second-order. The utilization of such waste-based biosorbents will minimize solid waste and also will provide an economical biosorbent for the removal of environmental pollutants.

Decoupling agriculture pollution and carbon reduction from economic growth in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Agriculture is the foundation of the national economy, and agricultural nonpoint source pollution and carbon emissions are the main environmental problems limiting the development of the agricultural economy. This study takes the Yangtze River Delta as the research object and measures agricultural carbon emissions and nonpoint source pollution in the study area from 2010 to 2020 respectively. The Tapio decoupling model is used to study types of decoupling between agricultural pollution and carbon reduction and economic growth in the Yangtze River Delta from 2010 to 2020, and the GM (1,1) model is used to predict the decoupling relationship between the agricultural environment and economic growth over the next ten years. The results show the following: (1) Agricultural COD emissions come mainly from livestock and poultry breeding, dropped from 1,130,120 tons in 2010 to 908,460 tons in 2020. Agricultural TN and TP emissions come mainly from plantations. Agricultural TN emissions dropped from 892,310 tons in 2010 to 788,020 tons in 2020. Agricultural TP emissions dropped from 149,590 tons in 2010 to130,770 tons in 2020. Agricultural carbon emissions dropped from 17,115,900 tons in 2010 to 15,786,600 tons in 2020, and come mainly from agricultural fertilizer and diesel fuel and pig breeding. (2) The decoupling effect of agricultural pollution reduction and carbon reduction in the Yangtze River Delta and economic growth has been in a long-term state, with negative decoupling occurring in a few regions, mainly in 2011, 2014 and 2020. (3) In the next ten years, except for 2021, when the coordination between agricultural pollution reduction and economic growth is poor, the two show good decoupling in the remaining years. Based on the results, this study makes recommendations on how to carry out comprehensive environmental management and promote green agricultural development.

Deciphering Macromolecular Interactions Involved in Abiotic Stress Signaling: A Review of Bioinformatics Analysis

Plant functioning and responses to abiotic stresses largely involve regulations at the transcriptomic level via complex interactions of signal molecules, signaling cascades, and regulators. Nevertheless, all the signaling networks involved in responses to abiotic stresses have not yet been fully established. The in-depth analysis of transcriptomes in stressed plants has become a relevant state-of-the-art methodology to study these regulations and signaling pathways that allow plants to cope with or attempt to survive abiotic stresses. The plant science and molecular biology community has developed databases about genes, proteins, protein-protein interactions, protein-DNA interactions and ontologies, which are valuable sources of knowledge for deciphering such regulatory and signaling networks. The use of these data and the development of bioinformatics tools help to make sense of transcriptomic data in specific contexts, such as that of abiotic stress signaling, using functional biological approaches. The aim of this chapter is to present and assess some of the essential online tools and resources that will allow novices in bioinformatics to decipher transcriptomic data in order to characterize the cellular processes and functions involved in abiotic stress responses and signaling. The analysis of case studies further describes how these tools can be used to conceive signaling networks on the basis of transcriptomic data. In these case studies, particular attention was paid to the characterization of abiotic stress responses and signaling related to chemical and xenobiotic stressors.

Human biomonitoring of persistent and non-persistent pollutants in a representative sample of the general population from Cape Verde: Results from the PERVEMAC-II study

International Public Health authorities recommend biomonitoring studies to assess the exposure to chemicals in the general population. The aim of the present study was to analyze the blood concentrations of a total 360 pollutants, including 230 pesticides in current or recent use, 59 persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs), 11 anticoagulant rodenticides and 60 pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs), in a cohort of 403 subjects from Cape Verde. The study was performed in the frame of the Pesticide Residues in Vegetables of the Macaronesia project (PERVEMAC-II). A total of 60 out of 360 toxic compounds (16.7%) were detected, at least, in one participant. The three most frequently detected substances were p,p'-DDE (100%), phenanthrene (94.0%) and hexachlobenzene (35.9%). 2-Phenylphenol and imidacloprid were detected in 29.0 and 14.4% of the population. The three substances with the highest serum concentrations were PhACs: naproxen (249.1 ng/mL), metronidazole (115.6 ng/mL) and acetaminophen (25.2 ng/mL). Median blood concentration of p,p'-DDE, HCB and phenanthrene were 1.87, 0.08 and 0.36 ng/mL. Blood concentrations of POPs were influenced by age, although both gender and body mass index may exert an influence in the presence of these substances. Lifestyle has an effect on the concentration of these substances, especially in terms of dietary habits. Both the frequency of detection and the concentration of the studied substances are similar to those of other biomonitored populations. This is the first biomonitoring study carried out in Cape Verde. Our results may be useful for the implementation of public health measures by the competent authorities.
