Cerium functionalized graphene nano-structures and their applications; A review

Porous carbohydrate-graphene aerogels synthesized by green method as electroactive supercapacitor materials

Various graphene derivatives have been known as electrode-active materials for fabricating supercapacitors. Interconnected graphene networks with adjustable porous structures, i.e., 3D graphene aerogels (GAs), can control the restacking of graphene sheets very well and, thus, lead to the enhanced performance supercapacitors. In this study, carbohydrates (sucrose and fructose) were used to make two types of 3D porous carbohydrates-graphene aerogels, sucrose-graphene aerogel (SCR) and fructose-graphene aerogel (FRC). Carbohydrates operate as a cross-linking and reductant agent. Voltammograms of supercapacitor electrodes based on the FRC and SCR indicate a more rectangular shape with a larger area and a superior current than the GA (graphene aerogel without using carbohydrates) electrode. They have better capacitive performance, more electron transportation ability, and higher specific capacitance (CS) values than GA. The supercapacitor electrodes based on FRC, SCR, and GA demonstrate the CS values of 257.2 F g -1, 221.0 F g -1, and 95 F g -1 at ѵ = 10 mV.s-1, respectively. Improvement in the performance of SCR and FRC supercapacitor electrodes, in comparison to GA, is attributed to the porous interconnected feature of their structures and their suitable available surface area, which facilitates electron and ion transportation throughout graphene networks. These supercapacitors also show excellent stability after recording 5000 consecutive voltammograms.

pH-Responsive Graphene Oxide-Based 2D/3D Composite for Enhancing Anti-Corrosion Properties of Epoxy Coating

The functionalized graphene oxide (GO)-based composites as fillers added into organic coatings are desired for realizing the longstanding corrosion protection of carbon steel. Here, the pH-responsive two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) GO-based composite (ZIF-90-AAP/GO) was developed by environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor 4-aminoantipyrine (AAP) anchored on the in situ growth of zeolite imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90) on the GO surface (ZIF-90/GO) through the Schiff base reaction. The active filler (ZIF-90-AAP/GO) was incorporated into an epoxy coating (EP) to obtain a high-performance self-healing coating on the surface of carbon steel. ZIF-90-AAP can greatly improve dispersion and compatibility of GO in EP. The low-frequency impedance modulus of ZIF-90-AAP/GO-EP can still reach up to 1.35 × 1010 Ω⋅cm2 after 40 days, which is about three orders of magnitude higher than that of the EP containing GO (GO-EP) relying on its passive and active corrosion protection. Meanwhile, ZIF-90-AAP/GO-EP exhibits excellent self-healing performance. The self-healing rate of ZIF-90-AAP/GO changes from negative to positive after 24 h, which results from the effective corrosion inhibition activity of ZIF-90-AAP for carbon steel based on the pH-triggered controlled release of AAP. The developed pH-responsive 2D/3D GO-based composite coating is very attractive for the corrosion protection of carbon steel.

Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue Dye from Aqueous Solution with Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles and Graphene Oxide-Doped Polyacrylamide

A cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO₂-NPs)/graphene oxide (GO)/polyacrylamide (PAM) ternary composite was synthesized through free-radical polymerization of acrylamide in the presence of CeO₂ nanoparticles and GO in an aqueous system. The synthesized composite material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy techniques and applied for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye from an aqueous solution. Tauc's model for direct transition was used to model for the optical band gap. The key operating parameters such as the amounts of CeO₂-NPs and GO, pH, initial MB concentration, type of light irradiation, and contact time have been optimized to achieve the highest MB degradation percentage. The photocatalysis process was pH-dependent, and the optimum pH value was found to be 12.0. Under UV-A light, 90% dye degradation occurred in 90 min. The degradation of MB was also specified in terms of total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Free-radical capture experiments were also performed to determine the role of radical species during the photocatalytic oxidation process. The photocatalytic process showed that the equilibrium data is in good agreement with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model. A rate constant of 0.0259 min^-1 was obtained. The hydrogel was also tested to assess its reusability, which is an important key factor in practical wastewater treatment. The photocatalytic activity only decreased to 75% after nine uses.

Carbon-based biosensors from graphene family to carbon dots: A viewpoint in cancer detection

According to the latest report by International Agency for Research on Cancer, 19.3 million new cancer cases and 10 million cancer deaths were globally reported in 2020. Early diagnosis can reduce these numbers significantly, and biosensors have appeared to be a solution to this problem as, unlike the traditional methods, they have low cost, rapid process, and do not need experts present on site for use. These devices have been incorporated to detect many cancer biomarkers and measure cancer drug delivery. To design these biosensors, a researcher must know about their different types, properties of nanomaterials, and cancer biomarkers. Among all types of biosensors, electrochemical and optical biosensors are the most sensitive and promising sensors for detecting complicated diseases like cancer. The carbon-based nanomaterial family has attracted lots of attention due to their low cost, easy preparation, biocompatibility, and significant electrochemical and optical properties. In this review, we have discussed the application of graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon dots (CDs), and fullerene (C60), for designing different electrochemical and optical cancer-detecting biosensors. Furthermore, the application of these carbon-based biosensors for detecting seven widely studied cancer biomarkers (HER2, CEA, CA125, VEGF, PSA, Alpha-fetoprotein, and miRNA21) is reviewed. Finally, various fabricated carbon-based biosensors for detecting cancer biomarkers and anticancer drugs are comprehensively summarized as well.

CeO2-rGO Composites for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution by Glycerol Photoreforming

The interaction between CeO₂-GO or CeO₂-rGO and gold as co-catalysts were here investigated for solar H₂ production by photoreforming of glycerol. The materials were prepared by a solar photoreduction/deposition method, where in addition to the activation of CeO₂ the excited electrons were able to reduce the gold precursor to metallic gold and the GO into rGO. The presence of gold was fundamental to boost the H₂ production, whereas the GO or the rGO extended the visible-light activity of cerium oxide (as confirmed by UV-DRS). Furthermore, the strong interaction between CeO₂ and Au (verified by XPS and TEM) led to good stability of the CeO₂-rGO-Au sample with the evolved H₂ that increased during five consecutive runs of glycerol photoreforming. This catalytic behaviour was ascribed to the progressive reduction of GO into rGO, as shown by Raman measurements of the photocatalytic runs. The good charge carrier separation obtained with the CeO₂-rGO-Au system allowed the simultaneous production of H₂ and reduction of GO in the course of the photoreforming reaction. These peculiar features exhibited by these unconventional photocatalysts are promising to propose new solar-light-driven photocatalysts for green hydrogen production.

Ce-modified Co-Mn oxide spinel on reduced graphene oxide and carbon black as ethanol tolerant oxygen reduction electrocatalyst in alkaline media

Electrocatalyst development for alkaline direct ethanol fuel cells is of great importance. In this context we have designed and synthesized cerium-modified cobalt manganese oxide (Ce-CMO) spinels on Vulcan XC72R (VC) and on its mixture with reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The influence of Ce modification on the activity and stability of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in absence and presence of ethanol was investigated. The physicochemical characterization of Ce-CMO/VC and Ce-CMO/rGO-VC reveals CeO₂ deposition and Ce doping of the CMO for both samples and a dissimilar morphology with respect to the nature of the carbon material. The electrochemical results display an enhanced ORR performance caused by Ce modification of CMO resulting in highly stable active sites. The Ce-CMO composites outperformed the CMO/VC catalyst with an onset potential of 0.89 V vs. RHE, a limiting current density of approx. -3 mA cm^-2 and a remaining current density of 91% after 3600 s at 0.4 V vs. RHE. In addition, remarkable ethanol tolerance and stability in ethanol containing electrolyte compared to the commercial Pt/C catalyst was evaluated. These outstanding properties highlight Ce-CMO/VC and Ce-CMO/rGO-VC as promising, selective and ethanol tolerant ORR catalysts in alkaline media.

Non-Metal-Doped Porous Carbon Nitride Nanostructures for Photocatalytic Green Hydrogen Production

Photocatalytic green hydrogen (H₂) production through water electrolysis is deemed as green, efficient, and renewable fuel or energy carrier due to its great energy density and zero greenhouse emissions. However, developing efficient and low-cost noble-metal-free photocatalysts remains one of the daunting challenges in low-cost H₂ production. Porous graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) nanostructures have drawn broad multidisciplinary attention as metal-free photocatalysts in the arena of H₂ production and other environmental remediation. This is due to their impressive catalytic/photocatalytic properties (i.e., high surface area, narrow bandgap, and visible light absorption), unique physicochemical durability, tunable electronic properties, and feasibility to synthesize in high yield from inexpensive and earth-abundant resources. The physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of porous gCNs can be easily optimized via the integration of earth-abundant heteroatoms. Although there are various reviews on porous gCN-based photocatalysts for various applications, to the best of our knowledge, there are no reviews on heteroatom-doped porous gCN nanostructures for the photocatalytic H₂ evolution reaction (HER). It is essential to provide timely updates in this research area to highlight the research related to fabrication of novel gCNs for large-scale applications and address the current barriers in this field. This review emphasizes a panorama of recent advances in the rational design of heteroatom (i.e., P, O, S, N, and B)-doped porous gCN nanostructures including mono, binary, and ternary dopants for photocatalytic HERs and their optimized parameters. This is in addition to H₂ energy storage, non-metal configuration, HER fundamental, mechanism, and calculations. This review is expected to inspire a new research entryway to the fabrication of porous gCN-based photocatalysts with ameliorated activity and durability for practical H₂ production.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of graphene@MXene hybrid: A novel and promising material for electrochemical sensing

To date, multiple graphene@MXene hybrids have been reported via various synthesis approaches, but almost all the graphene@MXene hybrids inevitably used the reduced graphene oxide that prepared by chemical oxidation/reduction method, which generally involved the complex and dangerous operation procedure, and the highly toxic chemical reagent. How to prepare graphene@MXene hybrid through a simple, safe and eco-friendly synthetic route is highly desired. Compared with traditional synthesis technology, ultrasound synthesis strategy displays the merits of simplicity, low cost and environment protection. Herein, MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) nanoflakes coupled with graphene nanosheets (graphene@MXene) were prepared in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) by simple ultrasound-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation method for the first time. Besides, the effect of types of solvent with different viscocity, sonication temperature and sonication duration time on the property of graphene@MXene hybrids were systematacially investigated. It is found the liquid-phase exfoliated graphene owned excellent electron transfer ability and the MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) nanoflakes possessed outstanding adsorption property, the as-synthesized graphene@MXene hybrid exhibited significant signal synergistic enhancement effect toward the oxidation of hazardous veterinary drug residue compound (chlorpromazine) and food additives (rhodamine B). Based on this, a novel and sensitive electrochemical sensor was fabricated, the linear detection ranges were 5 nM to 0.5 μM for chlorpromazine with sensitivity of 1090 µA μM^-1 cm^-2, and 10 nM to 2.5 μM for rhodamine B with sensitivity of 440 and 102.14 µA μM^-1 cm^-2. Besides, the detection limits were evaluated to be as low as 1.25 nM and 2.45 nM for chlorpromazine and rhodamine B, respectively.

Simultaneous Determination of Dopamine and Uric Acid in Real Samples Using a Voltammetric Nanosensor Based on Co-MOF, Graphene Oxide, and 1-Methyl-3-butylimidazolium Bromide

A chemically modified carbon paste electrode, based on a CoMOF-graphene oxide (GO) and an ionic liquid of 1-methyl-3-butylimidazolium bromide (CoMOF-GO/1-M,3-BB/CPE), was fabricated for the simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA). The prepared CoMOF/GO nanocomposite was characterized by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, a N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm, and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The electrochemical sensor clearly illustrated catalytic activity towards the redox reaction of dopamine (DA), which can be authenticated by comparing the increased oxidation peak current with the bare carbon paste electrode. The CoMOF-GO/1-M,3-BB/CPE exhibits a wide linear response for DA in the concentration range of 0.1 to 300.0 µM, with a detection limit of 0.04 µM. The oxidation peaks' potential for DA and uric acid (UA) were separated well in the mixture containing the two compounds. This study demonstrated a simple and effective method for detecting DA and UA in real samples.

Integrated Papertronic Techniques: Highly Customizable Resistor, Supercapacitor, and Transistor Circuitry on a Single Sheet of Paper

Humanity's excessive production of material waste poses a critical environmental threat, and the problem is only escalating, especially in the past few decades with the rapid development of powerful electronic tools and persistent consumer desire to upgrade to the newest available technology. The poor disposability of electronics is especially an issue for the newly arising field of single-use devices and sensors, which are often used to evaluate human health and monitor environmental conditions, and for other novel applications. Though impressive in terms of function and convenience, usage of conventional electronic components in these applications would inflict an immense surge in waste and result in higher costs. This work's primary objective is to develop a cost-effective, eco-friendly, all-paper, device for single-use applications that can be easily and safely disposed of through incineration or biodegradation. All electronic components are paper-based and integrated on paper-based printed circuit boards (PCBs), innovatively providing a realistic and practical solution for green electronic platforms. In particular, a methodology is discussed for simultaneously achieving very tunable resistors (20 Ω to 285 kΩ), supercapacitors (∼3.29 mF), and electrolyte-gated field-effect transistors on and within the thickness of a single sheet of paper. Each electronic component is completely integrated into functionalized paper regions and exhibits favorable electrical activity, adjustability, flexibility, and disposability. A simple amplifier circuit is successfully demonstrated within a small area and within the thickness of a single sheet of paper, displaying component versatility and the capability for their fabrication processes to be performed in parallel for efficient and rapid development.

Arsenite (III) removal via manganese-decoration on cellulose nanocrystal -grafted polyethyleneimine nanocomposite

The manganese is successfully induced as a "bridge joint" to fabricate a new adsorbent (CNC-Mn-PEI) connecting cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) respectively. It was used to remove As (III) from waste water. It has been proved that the incompact CNC and PEI were successfully connected by Mn ions, which induced the formation of O-Mn-O bonds and the removal efficiency is maintained in the broad pH range of 4-8, even with the influence of NO₃^- and CO₃^2-. The CNC-Mn-PEI was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Telley (BET) method and the results showed that the nanoparticle of the specific surface area was 106.5753 m²/g, it has a significant improvement, compared with CNC-Mn-DW (0.1918 m²/g). The isotherm and kinetic parameters of arsenic removal on CNC-Mn-PEI were well-fitted by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. The maximum adsorption capacities toward As (III) was 78.02 mg/g. After seven regeneration cycles, the removal of As (III) by the adsorbent decreased from 80.78% to 68.2%. Additionally, the hypothetical adsorption mechanism of "bridge joint" effect was established by FTIR and XPS, which provided the three activated sites from CNC-Mn-PEI can improve the arsenic removal efficiency, and providing a new stratagem for the arsenic pollution treatment.

Functional Nanomaterials in Biomedicine: Current Uses and Potential Applications

Nanomaterials, that is, materials made up of individual units between 1 and 100 nanometers, have lately involved a lot of attention since they offer a lot of potential in many fields, including pharmacy and biomedicine, owed to their exceptional physicochemical properties arising from their high surface area and nanoscale size. Smart engineering of nanostructures through appropriate surface or bulk functionalization endows them with multifunctional capabilities, opening up new possibilities in the biomedical field such as biosensing, drug delivery, imaging, medical implants, cancer treatment and tissue engineering. This article highlights up-to-date research in nanomaterials functionalization for biomedical applications. A summary of the different types of nanomaterials and the surface functionalization strategies is provided. Besides, the use of nanomaterials in diagnostic imaging, drug/gene delivery, regenerative medicine, cancer treatment and medical implants is reviewed. Finally, conclusions and future perspectives are provided.
