Abstract
BACKGROUND Giardia duodenalis is a zoonotic protozoan parasite causing diarrhea through waterborne or fecal-oral infection. The cysts can live in the drinking water and cause pandemic diseases. In Taiwan, very little information is available regarding the epidemiology of G. duodenalis in domestic animals. METHODS Fecal samples were collected from cattle (n = 156) and pigs (n = 141) in Hualien country, eastern Taiwan. Detection and genotyping were done by microscopy examination of fecal samples and amplification of the β-giardin gene using nested PCR. RESULTS The prevalence of G. duodenalis infection was 19.87% for cattle (31/156) and 4.26% for pigs (6/141). Using nested PCR, 30 infected samples found in cattle belonged to Assemblage E, and one sample belonged to Assemblage D. For pigs, four samples belonged to Assemblage E, one belonged to Assemblage D, and another one belonged to Assemblage A. In addition, these results showed that G. duodenalis Assemblage A was detected in pigs and may cause zoonotic transmission. CONCLUSION This is the first epidemiological investigation of G. duodenalis infection in animals in Hualien, Taiwan. These results could provide epidemiological information for disease control and public health protection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Giardia intestinalis is a common cause of gastrointestinal illness especially in children of developing countries. Giardia assemblages A and B are the major human infective genotypes. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to investigate the role of water supply in the epidemiology of giardiasis via genotyping G. intestinalis detected in diarrheic children and in water samples in Egyptian rural areas. METHODS Stool samples of 100 diarrheic children, 40 drinking water samples and 10 raw water samples of canals were examined microscopically for Giardia. DNA was extracted from microscopically positive faecal samples and from all of the collected water samples. Amplification of Giardia tpi gene was performed by a nested PCR using assemblage A- and assemblage B-specific primers. Giardia gdh gene was amplified by a heminested PCR. Giardia genotypes were determined by restriction fragment polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the amplified products. Sequencing of the amplified products was performed in two faecal and two water samples RESULTS: Giardia intestinalis was detected in 24 children, in none of the drinking water samples and in all canal water samples. Giardia sub-assemblage AII was identified in all stool and raw water samples. The RFLP pattern was confirmed in sequenced samples. CONCLUSION The presence of the same Giardia sub-assemblage in diarrheic children and in raw water samples shows by molecular evidence the potential for waterborne dissemination of Giardia in Egypt. Further studies are needed to monitor cyst levels and infectivity of the genotype detected in water for risk assessment and management.

Abstract
Giardia lamblia is a worldwide zoonotic intestinal parasite that infects humans and a wide range of mammals including dogs and cats, causing giardiasis with diarrhea. To investigate the infection and distribution of G. lamblia genotypes from stray dogs and cats in Guangdong, China according to different districts, gender and ages, fecal samples were collected and examined by microscopy, and all isolates were genotyped by PCR amplification using beta-giardin (bg) and triose phosphate isomerase (tpi) genes as molecular markers. The results showed that the prevalence of dogs and cats was 10.8% (57/527) and 5.8% (6/104), respectively. Sixty-one samples were detected by microscopy and 63 were amplified and successfully sequenced by the PCR. Based on the phylogenetic analysis, 25 canine isolates (24 assemblages AI and 1 assemblage D) were genotyped by tpi gene and 57 canine isolates (26 assemblages AI, 18 assemblages C and 13 assemblages D) genotyped by bg gene; 6 feline isolates were identified as assemblage AI by tpi gene, and as 3 assemblages AI and 3 assemblages F by bg gene. The dominant genotypes were assemblage AI in younger dogs (assemblage C in adult dogs) and assemblage C in male dogs (assemblage AI in female dogs). Mixed genotype infections were found in different age and gender groups. The results indicated that G. lamblia from stray dogs and cats in Guangdong province had a zoonotic potential with assemblage AI as the prevalent genotype. The different risk factors (age and sex) may have an impact on the infection of different genotypes.

Abstract
Giardia duodenalis is an important zoonotic pathogen in both public and veterinary health, and has been genotyped into at least eight assemblages (A-H), each with a distinct host range. In recent years, this intestinal protozoan parasite has been identified widely in humans and various other animals, and has even been recorded in environmental contaminants. Along with whole genome sequencing of G. duodenalis, multilocus sequence typing is increasingly being used to characterize G. duodenalis isolates. Here, we review the epidemiology, genotyping, and subtyping of G. duodenalis from humans and a wide range of other animals, as well as from wastewater, in China.

Abstract
Intestinal parasites are very common infections worldwide and they are responsible for significant public health problems. The World Health Organization estimates that one-third of the world population is infected and some epidemiologic factors related to the transmission have been identified. The purpose of this investigation was to study the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in people living in the rural community of "El Canal", Consolación del Sur municipality and the association with some epidemiologic risk factors. All participants were subjected to three methods of parasitological examinations on the stool samples and by immunodiagnostic tests which allow the detection of excretory-secretory antigens of adults with Fasciola hepatica. The global prevalence rate of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) was 18%, and 16.7% for protozoan infections, while the rate of helminth infection was lower (5.3%) in the population studied. The univariate analysis identified three factors associated with intestinal pathogenic protozoan infections which include livestock work, drinking water from well\river and eating unwashed fruits\vegetables. The multivariate analysis using introduction test logistic regression ratified the association of these risk factors. Contrary to what have been published in the majority of Cuban studies carried out in rural places, a higher prevalence of protozoan than helminth infection was found. This discrepancy may be explained because the majority of the workers in this rural community were stock-breeders and they are not involved in other agricultural work. The identification of risk factors is important in order to design appropriate strategies for control of IPIs in communities.

Abstract
Giardia duodenalis (syn. Giardia lamblia and Giardia intestinalis) is a common intestinal parasite of humans and mammals worldwide. Assessing the zoonotic transmission of the infection requires molecular characterization as there is considerable genetic variation within G. duodenalis. To date eight major genetic groups (assemblages) have been identified, two of which (A and B) are found in both humans and animals, whereas the remaining six (C to H) are host-specific and do not infect humans. Sequence-based surveys of single loci have identified a number of genetic variants (genotypes) within assemblages A and B in animal species, some of which may have zoonotic potential. Multi-locus typing data, however, has shown that in most cases, animals do not share identical multi-locus types with humans. Furthermore, interpretation of genotyping data is complicated by the presence of multiple alleles that generate "double peaks" in sequencing files from PCR products, and by the potential exchange of genetic material among isolates, which may account for the non-concordance in the assignment of isolates to specific assemblages. Therefore, a better understanding of the genetics of this parasite is required to allow the design of more sensitive and variable subtyping tools, that in turn may help unravel the complex epidemiology of this infection.

Abstract
Giardia duodenalis is considered a potentially zoonotic protozoan. Some animal species, including infected dogs, may play an important role in the spread of Giardia cysts through environmental contamination with their feces. In the present study, a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to examine 143 samples of dog feces collected in urban areas as an indicator of the risk of field contamination. Using a Bayesian statistical approach, the ELISA showed a sensitivity of 88.9% and a specificity of 95.8% with positive and negative predictive values of 89.6% and 95.4%, respectively. The test affords the advantage of rapid processing of fecal samples without a complex technical structure and extensive costly labor. Moreover, the present results show that the assay provides public health veterinarians with a practical tool that can be used in screening programs, as a valid alternative or as an adjunct to other tests, in order to assess the biological risk of exposure to G. duodenalis cysts from dogs in human settlements. However, the test may not be completely accurate for human health risk evaluation, as it does not discriminate between zoonotic and non-zoonotic isolates.
