Abstract
Tea is a highly popular beverage, primarily due to its unique flavor and aroma as well as its perceived health benefits. The impact of tea on the gut microbiome could be an important means by which tea exerts its health benefits since the link between the gut microbiome and health is strong. This review provided a discussion of the bioactive compounds in tea and the human gut microbiome and how the gut microbiome interacts with tea polyphenols. Importantly, studies were compiled on the impact of differently processed tea, which contains different polyphenol profiles, on the gut microbiota from in vivo animal feeding trials, in vitro human fecal fermentation experiments, and in vivo human feeding trials from 2004-2024. The results were discussed in terms of different tea types and how their impacts are related to or different from each other in these three study groups.

Abstract
Polysaccharides from natural sources can regulate the composition of intestinal flora through the "gut-liver axis" pathway, potentially ameliorating alcoholic liver injury. Aspalathus linearis, also known as rooibos, is one such natural product that has shown promise in this regard. This study looked at the structural properties of A. linearis polysaccharide (ALP) and how well it would work to treat acute alcoholic liver impairment. This study looks at the composition of monosaccharides, functional groups, and molecular weight (Mw) of a newly discovered water-soluble polysaccharide, named ALP. The polysaccharide is composed of pyranose rings, amide groups, and sulfate groups linked by β-glycosidic linkage. It has a relative Mw of 4.30 × 103 kDa and is composed of glucose, rhamnose, and some other monosaccharides. The study found that treating mice with the model of acute alcoholic liver disease with ALP could alleviate pathological symptoms, inhibit the release of inflammatory cytokines, and suppress indicators of oxidative stress. Experiments have shown that different doses of ALP can activate the P4502E1/Keap1-Nrf2-HO-1 signaling pathway. The regulation of inflammatory factors and downstream antioxidant enzymes occurs as a result. Based on these data, it is likely that ALP protects the liver via the "gut-liver axis" pathway by reducing oxidative stress-related damage, inflammation, and alcohol-related alterations to the gut microbiome. The results indicate that ALP mitigates injury caused by oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and changes in the gut microbiota induced by alcohol through the "gut-liver axis" pathway, which provides protection to the liver. This provides preliminary evidence for the development of related drugs. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Researchers extracted a polysaccharide from fresh leaves of Auricularia auricula. The polysaccharide was purified and determined to have a predominantly homogeneous molecular weight. An acute alcoholic liver damage mouse model was established, and it was concluded that the polysaccharide could ameliorate liver injury in mice through the "gut-liver axis" pathway. This novel polysaccharide can be used as an additive to develop functional foods with beneficial effects, which can positively impact the daily maintenance of consumers.

Abstract
The bioactivity of tea polysaccharides (TPs) has been widely reported, but studies to date have focused on green tea. Some human health investigations have implied that black tea may possess potential antidiabetic effects, but less is known about their potential role and related antidiabetic mechanism. The present study was, therefore, conducted to investigate the chemical properties and antidiabetic activity of TPs from black tea. Monosaccharide composition revealed that Alduronic acid (77.8 mol%) considerably predominated in the fraction. TP conformation analysis indicated that three components in TPs were all typical of high-branching structures. Oral administration of TPs could effectively alleviate fasting blood glucose in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) mice, with the values 23.6 ± 1.42, 19.6 ± 2.25, and 16.4 ± 2.07 mmol/L in the 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg·BW groups, respectively. Among these TPs groups, the 800 mg/kg·BW groups significantly decreased by 37.88% when compared with the T2D+water group (p < 0.05). Further studies demonstrated that TP treatment upregulated the expression of p-Akt/p-PI3K (p < 0.001). Additionally, TP treatment significantly promoted glucose transporter protein 2 (GLUT2) translocation in the liver (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that TPs from black tea protect against T2D by activating PI3K/Akt/GLUT2 signaling and might serve as a novel therapeutic candidate for T2D.

Abstract
Food consumption can alter the biochemistry and redox status of human saliva, and the serving temperature of food may also play a role. The study aimed to explore the immediate (3 min) and delayed (30 min) effects of hot tea (57 ± 0.5 °C) ingestion and cold tea (8 ± 0.5 °C) ingestion on the salivary flow rate and salivary redox-relevant attributes. The saliva was collected from 20 healthy adults before, 3-min after and 30-min after the tea ingestion. The hot or cold deionised water at the same temperatures were used as control. The salivary flow rate and redox markers in hot tea (HBT), cold tea (CBT), hot water (HW) and cold water (CW) group were analysed and compared. The results demonstrated that neither the black tea nor the water altered the salivary flow rate; the black tea immediately increased the salivary thiol (SH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content while reduced salivary uric acid (UA) significantly. The tea ingestion showed a tendency to elevate the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) in saliva, although not significantly. The water ingestion decreased the MDA content immediately and increased the UA level significantly. Cold water was found to induce a greater delayed increase in total salivary total protein (TPC) than the hot water. In conclusion, the black tea ingestion affects the redox attributes of human saliva acutely and significantly, while the temperature of drink makes the secondary contribution.

Abstract
Lipid accumulation causes diseases such as obesity and abnormal lipid metabolism, thus impairing human health. Tea polysaccharide is one of the natural, active substances that can lower lipid levels. In this paper, an oleic-acid-induced HepG2 cell model was established. The lipid-lowering effects of a novel group of Fuzhuan brick tea polysaccharides (FTPs)-obtained from Fuzhuan brick tea-were examined in vitro. The monosaccharide composition of FTP3 was Glc, Gal, Ara, Man, Rha, GalAc, GlcAc, and Xyl with a molar ratio of 23.5:13.2:9.0:5.5:5.4:2.7:1.3:1.0, respectively. A molecular weight of 335.68 kDa was identified for FTP3. HepG2 cells treated with FTP3 achieved a prominent lipid-lowering effect compared with cells treated with oleic acid. Images of the Oil Red O staining treatment showed that FTP3-treated groups had significantly fewer red fat droplets. TC and TG levels were lower in FTP3-treated groups. FTP3 alleviated lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells, activated AMPK, and decreased the SREBP-1C and FAS protein expressions associated with fatty acid synthesis. FTP3 holds promising potential for its lipid-lowering effects.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective potency of the Pleurospermum candollei methanol extract against CCl4-induced liver damage in rats. HPLC technique was used to estimate the presence of polyphenols in the methanol extract of P. candollei (PCM), while proximate analysis revealed the presence of carbohydrates, lipids, and moisture in the extract. The antioxidant potential of PCM was evaluated by 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and reducing power assay, which showed a high percentage of inhibition against free radicals. Hepatotoxicity was induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). CCl4 administration reduced the activity of endogenous antioxidants, whereas it increased the production of nitrites and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in rats. Furthermore, the level of hepatic markers in serum was also elevated after CCl4 administration. Moreover, the expression of stress-related markers, proinflammatory mediators, and apoptotic genes was enhanced in CCl4-treated rats. Coadministration of PCM along with CCl4 in rats reduced the levels of free radicals and the above genes to normal levels. CCl4 administration caused histopathological alterations in liver tissues, while cotreatment with PCM mitigated liver injuries. These findings suggest that the methanol extract of P. candollei possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can prevent liver injury. Further pharmacological research will be helpful in determining the effectiveness of P. candollei in humans. Development of FDA-approved plant-based anti-inflammatory drugs can help treat patients and reduce the chances of toxicity.

Abstract
A high-sugar and -fat diet (HSFD) has become a primary risk factor for diabetes, and dietary intervention shows a substantial effect on the prevention and management of hyperglycemia. In this study, the chemical compositions of the aqueous extracts of stir-fried green tea (GT) and congou black tea (BT) were compared. Moreover, their potential mechanisms and regulatory effects on hepatic glycolipid metabolism and gut microbiota disorders in hyperglycemic mice were further explored. Our results show that GT or BT intervention had a prominent regulatory effect on glycolipid metabolism. Moreover, they could significantly regulate the levels of serum metabolic signatures, the activities of key enzymes in liver glucose metabolism, and the expression of genes or proteins related to glycolipid metabolism via activating the IRS-1-PI3K/AKT-GLUT2 signaling pathway. Significantly, GT or BT administration adjusted the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota, mainly reflecting a significant increase in the abundance of beneficial bacteria (including Allobaculum, Lactobacillus, and Turicibacter) and reducing the abundance of harmful or conditionally pathogenic bacteria (mainly including Clostridiales and Bacteroides). Our results suggest that dietary supplementation with GT or BT could exert a practical anti-diabetic effect. Meanwhile, BT intervention showed a better regulation effect on glycolipid metabolism. This study reveals that GT and BT have excellent potential for developing anti-diabetic food.

Abstract
Grifola frondosa polysaccharide-protein complex (G. frondosa PPC) is a polymer which consists of polysaccharides and proteins/peptides linked by covalent bonds. In our previous ex vivo research, it has been demonstrated that a cold-water extracted G. frondosa PPC has stronger antitumor activity than a G. frondosa PPC extracted from boiling water. The main purpose of the current study was to further evaluate the anti-hepatocellular carcinoma and gut microbiota regulation effects of two PPCs isolated from G. frondosa at 4 °C (GFG-4) and 100 °C (GFG-100) in vivo. The results exhibited that GFG-4 remarkably upregulated the expression of related proteins in TLR4-NF-κB and apoptosis pathway, thereby inhibiting the development of H22 tumors. Additionally, GFG-4 increased the abundance of norank_f__Muribaculaceae and Bacillus and reduced the abundance of Lactobacillus. Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) analysis suggested that GFG-4 promoted SCFAs production, particularly butyric acid. Conclusively, the present experiments revealed GFG-4 has the potential of anti-hepatocellular carcinoma growth via activating TLR4-NF-κB pathway and regulating gut microbiota. Therefore, G. frondosa PPCs could be considered as safe and effective natural ingredient for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. The present study also provides a theoretical foundation for the regulation of gut microbiota by G. frondosa PPCs.

Abstract
Liver fibrosis has proven to be the main predisposing factor for liver cirrhosis and liver cancer; however, an effective treatment remains elusive. Polysaccharides, with low toxicity and a wide range of bioactivities, are strong potential candidates for anti-hepatic fibrosis applications. For this study, a new low molecular weight neutral polysaccharide (B. striata glucomannan (BSP)) was extracted and purified from Bletilla striata. The structure of BSP was characterized and its activities for alleviating liver fibrosis in vivo were further evaluated. The results revealed that the structural unit of BSP was likely →4)-β-D-Glcp-(1 → 4)-β-D-Manp-(1 → 4)-β-D-2ace-Manp-(1 → 4)-β-D-Manp-(1 → 4)-β-D-Glcp-(1 → 4)-β-D-Manp-(1 → 4)-β-D-Manp-(1 → 4)-β-D-3ace-Manp-(1→, with a molecular weight of only 58.5 kDa. Additionally, BSP was observed to attenuate the passive impacts of liver fibrosis in a manner closely related to TLR2/TLR4-MyD88-NF-κB signaling pathway conduction. In summary, the results of this study provide theoretical foundations for the potential applications of BSP as an anti-liver fibrosis platform.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exopolysaccharide biopolymers produced by microorganisms are crucial to the environment. They contribute to areas such as the health and bionanotechnology sectors, food and cosmetic industries as gelling agents, and environmental sector as flocculants owing to their biodegradability and non-toxic nature. The current study aimed to isolate the fraction of released exopolysaccharide (rEPS) by Bacillus velezensis SN-1 from Chinese Da-Jiang. RESULTS The weighted average molecular weight of the major isolated component, rEPS-2, was 202 kDa, and its monosaccharide composition included mannose, glucose, and galactose at a molar ratio of 0.38:0.30:0.32. Further, the rEPS-2 was characterized using methylation analysis and one-dimensional/two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (1D/2D NMR) spectroscopy. In vivo hepatoprotective effects indicated that rEPS-2 could alleviate carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 )-induced liver injury in mice by lowering the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Furthermore, rEPS-2 can increase the expression of antioxidant genes HO-1, GCLC and NQO1 in the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway, thereby increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and reduced catalase (CAT) in liver cells. Furthermore, the rEPS-2 can be used and modulate the gut microbiota of mice with liver injury caused by CCl4 . CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that rEPS-2 has promising potential to serve as hepatoprotective agents. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Tea polysaccharides plays a role in lipid metabolism, antioxidant capacity and immunity of mammals. To investigate the functions of tea polysaccharides on fish, the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) was selected as the animal model in this study. In our study, the common carp (45±0.71g) were randomly divided into four groups and were fed fodder with 50% carbohydrate. The common carp were orally administrated with 0 mg/kg BW (control group), 200 mg/kg BW (low-dose group), 400 mg/kg BW (medium-dose group) and 800 mg/kg BW (high-dose group) tea polysaccharide for two week. At the end of experiment, the serum glucose, TG, MDA contents and antioxidase activities were measured by commercial kits. The serum immune factors levels were tested by ELISA. The genes expression levels related to antioxidant capacity, metabolism and immunity were measured by real-time PCR. The results showed that the glucose, TG and MDA contents in serum were significantly decreased by tea polysaccharides treatment. The serum activities of SOD were significantly increased by low-dose tea polysaccharides treatment. The serum activities of GPX were significantly increased by medium-dose tea polysaccharides treatment. The serum levels of IL-1β and TNFα were significantly decreased in the tea polysaccharides treatment group. In the high-dose treatment group, the serum level of TGFβ was significantly increased, and the serum level of IL-12 was markedly decreased. In the hepatopancreas, the expression of acc1, fas, srebp1c, lpl, gys and pparγ were significantly reduced, and the expression of pygl, cat, mnsod, ho-1 and gr were significantly up-regulated in the tea polysaccharides group. In the intestine, the expression of zo-1, occ and gip was significantly up-regulated in the high-dose treatment group. Moreover, the expression of glut2 and sglt1 were significantly down regulated. In the spleen, the expression of il-12, tnfα and il-6 were significantly decreased, and the expression of il-10 and tgfβ was significantly increased by the tea polysaccharides. In the spleen cells, the tea polysaccharides could relieve the LPS-induced immune damage. In conclusion, tea polysaccharides can improve antioxidant capacity, lipid metabolism and immunity of common carp.

Abstract
Tea polysaccharide (TPS) is the second most abundant ingredient in tea following tea polyphenols. As a complex polysaccharide, TPS has a complex chemical structure and a variety of bioactivities, such as anti-oxidation, hypoglycemia, hypolipidemic, immune regulation, and anti-tumor. Additionally, it shows excellent development and application prospects in food, cosmetics, and medical and health care products. However, numerous studies have shown that the bioactivity of TPS is closely related to its sources, processing methods, and extraction methods. Therefore, the authors of this paper reviewed the relevant recent research and conducted a comprehensive and systematic review of the extraction methods, physicochemical properties, and bioactivities of TPS to strengthen the understanding and exploration of the bioactivities of TPS. This review provides a reference for preparing and developing functional TPS products.

Abstract
Traditional Chinese Medicine is generally used as a decoction to guard health. Many active ingredients in the decoction are chemical ingredients that are not usually paid attention to in phytochemical research, such as polysaccharides, etc. Based on research interest in Chinese herbal decoction, crude polysaccharides from G. wilfordii (GCP) were purified to obtain two relatively homogeneous polysaccharides, a neutral polysaccharide (GNP), and an acid polysaccharide (GAP) by various chromatographic separation methods, which were initially characterized by GC-MS, NMR, IR, and methylation analysis. Studies on the hepatoprotective activity of GCP in vivo showed that GCP might be a potential agent for the prevention and treatment of acute liver injury by inhibiting the secretion levels of ALT, AST, IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, and MDA expression levels, increasing SOD, and the GSH-Px activity value. Further, in vitro assays, GNP and GAP, decrease the inflammatory response by inhibiting the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α, involved in the STAT1/T-bet signaling pathway.

Abstract
L-theanine (γ-Glutamylethylamide) is a nonprotein water soluble amino acid (AA) mostly found in leaves of Camellia sinensis (green tea). This is a key component of green tea and is considered as the most abundant form of total AAs in green tea (i.e., about 50%). L-theanine is an exclusive taste ingredient of tea producing an attractive flavor and aroma in tea. It has biological effects such as antioxidant, growth promoter, immune booster, anti-stresser, hepatoprotective, antitumor, antiaging, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antianxiety activities that are worth noticing. It could reduce the oxidative impairment by reducing the synthesis of reactive oxygen species, oxidative parameters, and lipid damage as well as increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The oral ingestion of L-theanine enhanced γδ T-cell proliferation. Therefore, it is being considered an essential compound of green tea that has the ability to improve immune function. The L-theanine can be used as a potential treatment for hepatic injury and immune-related liver diseases via the downregulation of the inflammatory response through the initiation of nitric oxide synthesis and glutathione production which are likely to be critical for the control of hepatic diseases as well as for the improvement of immune function. In addition, it could be used as a best natural feed additive with a potent antistressor by decreasing the levels of corticosterone, dopamine, and noradrenaline. After systematically reviewing the literature, it is noticed that most studies were carried out on mice, pig, human, and butterfly; while dietary supplementation studies of L-theanine in animal and poultry especially among broilers are very limited because of less awareness of this AA. So, the aim of this review is to encourage the veterinarian and poultry researchers to conduct more research at the molecular level about this AA to expose its more beneficial effects and its mechanism of absorption for potential use of this unique green tea AA in poultry nutrition.

Abstract
Many natural polysaccharides from bio-resources hold advantages of multi-functions, high efficiency, non-toxicity or low side effect, and have strong potentials in protection against alcoholic liver damages. This review summarized the bio-resources, chemical and structural characteristics of natural polysaccharides with potentials in inhibition against alcoholic liver damages, and also emphasized knowledge on correlations between their chemical structure and function. Approximately 95 species were confirmed in generation of hepatoprotective polysaccharides. Products as crude polysaccharides originated from 17 species were sum up despite the indetermination of their accurate structure. Additional four polysaccharides were described for their known chemical structures. Possible roles of hepatoprotective polysaccharides were provided with evidence on antioxidant promotion, lipids regulation, apoptosis inhibition and anti-inflammation, as well as confirmations in immune enhancement, iron removal and anti-fibrosis when currently treated against the alcoholic liver damages. To sum up, this overview could serve to guide development and utilization of natural hepatoprotective polysaccharides.

Abstract
The present study aimed to explore the hepatoprotective effects of acidic hydrolysates of polysaccharide extracted from the marine clam M. veneriformis (Ah-MVPS) against ethanol- and CCl4-induced liver damage. Moreover, we also seek to probe the mechanism associated with the liver protection effect of Ah-MVPS. A series of animal and cell experiments were executed to detect suitable serological and histological indicators in hepatic tissues. Ah-MVPS can significantly reduce liver damage by means of an increase in hepatocyte superoxidase dismutase and inhibition of leakages of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate transaminase, as well as through alleviation of malondialdehyde excalation. Ah-MVPS inhibited steatosis and water-like hepatic deterioration in histological examination. They can suppress membrane destruction in boundaries and the collapse of reticular scaffolds of injured mouse hepatocytes and can substantially reduce the inflammatory extent of liver tissue aroused by excessive intake of ethanol or CCl4. In cell assays, Ah-MVPS markedly elevated the viability of L-02 cells exposed to an intoxication of ethanol or H2O2. The beneficial effect of Ah-MVPS might arise, at least in part, because of the amelioration of peroxidation or oxidative stress. Taken together, our findings reveal that Ah-MVPS have potential for development as protective agents to attenuate acute liver injuries.

Abstract
Agaro- and neoagaro-oligosaccharides with even-numbered sugar units possess a variety of biological activities. However, the effects of the odd-numbered oligosaccharides from Gracilaria agarose (OGAOs) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have not been reported. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of OGAOs on anti-T2DM from different aspects. We found that OGAOs treatment could alleviate oxidative stress, inflammation, and the related hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, lipid accumulation, and obesity in high-fat diet (HFD) induced T2DM. Investigation of the underlying mechanism showed that colitis and colonic microbiota dysbiosis in T2DM mice were ameliorated after OGAOs treatment. First, OGAOs increased the expression of ZO-1, occludin, and AMPK, and suppressed the TLR4/MAPK/NF-κB pathway in colon indicating that OGAOs enhance intestinal integrity and conduct the anti-apoptosis effects to prevent the invasion of toxins and harmful microorganisms. Moreover, the relative abundance of Akkermansia was significantly upregulated in the gut microbiome of T2DM mice associated with a dramatic decrease of the relative abundance of Helicobacter, which are both beneficial for alleviating colitis and T2DM. In addition, Spearman's correlation analysis indicated that changes in the colonic microbiota could regulate oxidative stress, inflammation, and hyperlipidemia. In summary, the underlying mechanism of OGAOs on alleviating colitis and colonic microbiota dysbiosis in T2DM has been intensively studied, illustrating that OGAOs could be further developed as a potential pharmaceutical agent for T2DM.

Abstract
In Southwestern China, the root of Morinda angustifolia Roxb. has been employed as a folk medicine for treating various types of hepatitis and jaundice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of anthraquinones extract from M. angustifolia root (AEMA) in carbon tetrachloride- (CCl4-) induced liver injury in mice and identify the main bioactive components. Results indicated that AEMA pretreatment could significantly, in a dose-dependent manner, attenuate the increased levels of ALT and AST in mice serum induced by CCl4. At doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg, AEMA exhibited significant suppression of the elevated hepatic levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), as well as marked upregulatory effects on the activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in mice exposed to CCl4. However, AEMA treatment had no effect on the antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT) or the nonenzymatic antioxidant glutathione (GSH). Furthermore, two anthraquinone constituents were isolated from AEMA and identified as soranjidiol and rubiadin-3-methyl ether. Soranjidiol exhibited similar protective effects to those of AEMA on liver damage induced by CCl4. Overall, our research clearly demonstrated the hepatoprotective effects of the AEMA, and anthraquinones, particularly soranjidiol, should be considered as the main hepatoprotective principles of M. angustifolia. In addition, the underlying mechanism may be, at least in part, related to its antioxidant properties.

Abstract
In this paper, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based ultrasonic-assisted enzymatic extraction (UAEE) was employed in polysaccharides extraction from Lonicerae japonica leaves (LJLP). The optimal extraction conditions (extraction time of 33 min, PEG concentration of 30%, and ultrasonic power of 191 W) were obtained by Box-Behnken design (BBD). Under this condition, the LJLP yield was 14.76%. Furthermore, LJLP was identified as a typical heteropolysaccharide considering the main constitutive monosaccharides include galactose (32.3%), glucose (20.9%), and ribose (15.2%). Moreover, LJLP exhibited high total reducing power and considerable scavenging activities on superoxide radicals, in a concentration-dependent manner in vitro. In addition, antioxidant analysis in vivo revealed that for the LJLP-treated mice, the superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) activities, and total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) were significantly increased, while the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) was decreased in both serum and liver.

Abstract
The current study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the beneficial effects of 3,5-dihydroxy-4',7-dimethoxyflavone isolated from Tamarix aphylla L. against liver injury in mice. Liver injury was induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) at a dose of 0.4 mL/kg mixed in olive oil at ratio (1:4) twice a week for 6 consecutive weeks. The administration of CCl4 caused significant histopathological changes in liver tissues while the pre-treatment with the flavone at dose of 10 and 25 mg/kg ameliorated the observed liver damages. Also, it markedly reduced hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) level as well as increased the activities of liver superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (Gpx) compared with their recorded levels in CCl4 model group. Moreover, the immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated the enhancement in the protein level of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) while the protein levels of cysteine-aspartic acid protease-3 (caspase-3), Bcl-2-associated x protein (Bax), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and CD31 were suppressed following the flavone treatement. These results suggest that the flavone can inhibit liver injury induced in mice owning to its impact on the oxidation, apoptotic and angiogenesis mechanisms. Further pharmacological investigations are essential to determine the effectiveness of the flavone in human.

Abstract
Tea polysaccharides (TPS) are regarded as some of the main bioactive constituents of tea made from the leaves and buds of the tea plant ( Camellia sinensis L.). An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that TPS can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic diseases. However, the potential mechanisms responsible for antidiabetic and antiobesogenic activities of TPS remain unclear. Therefore, the cellular and physiological mechanisms that underlie the antidiabetic and antiobesogenic effects, including antioxidant and anti-inflammation effects, inhibition of digestive enzymes, prevention of macronutrient absorption, and expression of gene and protein, were summarized in this review. Furthermore, the gastrointestinal functions of TPS and the role of gut microbiota in the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases were discussed. It is expected that the present review will be helpful for enhancing our knowledge about the health-promoting effects of TPS on metabolic diseases and stimulating further works on TPS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Confirmation of food labeling that claims production in a small geographic region is critical to traceability, quality control and brand protection. In the current study, isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) was used to generate profiles of δ13 C and δ15 N to determine if the stable isotope signatures of Keemun black tea differ within the three counties that claim production. Other factors (cultivar type, leaf maturity and manufacturing process) were considered for their potential effects. RESULTS Both cultivar type and leaf maturity have remarkable impact on the δ15 N values of tea leaves, and that the cultivar influenced the δ13 C values. Keemun black tea from Qimen county could be easily discriminated from samples from Dongzhi and Guichi counties based on δ15 N signatures. The k-NN model was cross-validated with an accuracy of 91.6%. Environmental factors and/or genotype seem to be the major reasons for δ15 N differences in Keemun black tea from the selected regions. CONCLUSION This article provides a potential effective method to delineate the geographic point-of-origin of Keemun black tea based on δ15 N signatures. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are a class of hepatic toxins widely existing in plants. Cytochromes P450 (CYP) mediates PA bioactivation and toxicities in mammals. It has been reported that PAs can induce developmental toxicity, but systematic research is lacking. In this study, we investigated developmental toxicity of monocrotaline (MCT) in rats. Pregnant rats were administered with MCT (20 mg/kg) intragastrically from gestation day 9 to 20, followed by determination of changes in fetal growth, hepatic morphology, serum biochemical indices, and indicators of hepatocytes apoptosis. MCT was found to induce developmental toxicity and fetal hepatotoxicity, particularly in female fetuses. Metabolic activation was also studied by examination of bioactivation efficiency of MCT in fetal liver microsomes, serum MCT, pyrrole-protein adduction derived from MCT, and hepatic CYP3 A expression of fetuses in vivo. Male fetuses showed greater basal MCT bioactivation than that of female fetuses, but continuous exposure to MCT caused a selective CYP3 A induction in female fetuses, which may contribute to the sex difference in MCT-induced developmental toxicity.

Abstract
This study aims at investigating the antioxidant activity and repair effect of green tea polysaccharide (TPS) with different molecular weights (Mw) on damaged human kidney proximal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2). Scavenging activities on hydroxyl radical (·OH) and ABTS radical and reducing power of four kinds of TPS with Mw of 10.88 (TPS0), 8.16 (TPS1), 4.82 (TPS2), and 2.31 kDa (TPS3) were detected. A damaged cell model was established using 2.6 mmol/L oxalate to injure HK-2 cells. Then, different concentrations of TPSs were used to repair the damaged cells. Index changes of subcellular organelles of HK-2 cells were detected before and after repair. The four kinds of TPSs possessed radical scavenging activity and reducing power, wherein TPS2 with moderate Mw presented the strongest antioxidant activity. After repair by TPSs, cell morphology of damaged HK-2 cells was gradually restored to normal conditions. Reactive oxygen species production decreased, and mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) of repaired cells increased. Cells of G1 phase arrest were inhibited, and cell proportion in the S phase increased. Lysosome integrity improved, and cell apoptotic rates significantly reduced in the repaired group. The four kinds of TPSs with varying Mw displayed antioxidant activity and repair effect on the mitochondria, lysosomes, and intracellular DNA. TPS2, with moderate Mw, showed the strongest antioxidant activity and repair effect; it may become a potential drug for prevention and treatment of kidney stones.

Abstract
Fucosylated chondroitin sulfate from Isostichopus badionotus (fCS-Ib) is a kind of sulfated polysaccharides with well-repeated structure. In our former publications, fCS-Ib has been reported to be a functional food ingredient with hypoglycemic and antilipemic activities. However, there is no systematic study to investigate the effects of fCS-Ib on metabolic syndromes. In the present study, C57BL/6 mice fed on a high-fat and high sucrose diet (HFSD) for 6 weeks was used to cause metabolic syndromes. The final results showed that fCS-Ib alleviated obesity, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, inflammation, liver steatosis, and adipocyte hypertrophy caused by HFSD. Meanwhile, fCS-Ib showed powerful effects on moderating gut microbiota dysbiosis in the HFSD-fed mice. Supplement of fCS-Ib could reduce ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes by decreasing abundance of Lachnospiraceae and Allobaculum while increasing abundance of Porphyromonadaceae, Barnesiella, and Bacteroides. Our results showed that fCS-Ib could be further developed as a potential pharmaceutical agent to prevent metabolic syndromes and gut microbiota dysbiosis.

Abstract
In vivo hepatoprotective effect of a novel arabinogalactan (AG) from black soybean on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury was evaluated for the first time. Our results showed that administration of AG could significantly attenuate the increase in the levels of alkaline phosphatase, alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase in the serum caused by CCl4 treatment. AG treatment not only significantly elevated the levels of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase; but also increased the levels of non-enzyme antioxidants (glutathione and total antioxidant capacity in liver tissues) when compared with CCl4-induced acute liver injury model. In addition, AG significantly reduced lipid peroxidation levels in liver tissues. The hepatoprotective effect of high-dose of AG was comparable to that of silymarin, which served as a positive standard. This study indicated that AG had a protective effect on CCl4-induced acute liver injury.

Abstract
In this study, the polysaccharides (PPs) from pomelo peels were investigated for their structural characteristics and antitumor mechanism on sarcoma S180-bearing mice. Components, FT-IR, and GC analysis showed that PPs, mainly composed of glucose, were typical acid polysaccharides with α-d-pyranoid glucose containing 74.52% carbohydrate and 16.33% uronic acid. The in vivo antitumor tests revealed that PPs could effectively suppress the transplanted S180 tumors growth, as well as protect the immune organs, improve proliferation ability of splenic lymphocytes and killing activity of NK cells in tumor-bearing mice. Furthermore, the levels of serum cytokines (IL-2, IFN-γ and TNF-α) and the proportion of CD4⁺ T cells in peripheral blood of mice bearing S180 tumors were also significantly increased after treatment with PPs. Meanwhile, the transplanted S180 tumor cells exhibited obvious apoptotic phenotype after PPs treatment by arresting the cell cycle in S phase, down-regulating the Bcl-2 expressions and up-regulating the Bax levels. These data showed that PPs were mainly composed of glucose with α-d-pyranoid ring and could induce apoptosis of solid tumor cells by enhancing the antitumor immunity of tumor-bearing mice, which would provide a theoretical basis for the practical application in food and medical industries.

Abstract
In order to contribute to the exploitation and utilization of spent mushroom substrates (SMS) of Laetiporus sulphureus, hot-water-extractable polysaccharides (H-SMPS) and enzymatic-extractable polysaccharides (E-SMPS) were successfully isolated from SMS of L. sulphureus. Both H-SMPS and E-SMPS were found to have high reducing power and potential scavenging activities against hydroxyl, DPPH, and superoxide anion radicals. In vivo assays showed that the administration of H-SMPS and E-SMPS has potential hepatoprotective effects against alcohol-induced alcoholic liver disease (ALD), possibly brought about by improving liver function, increasing antioxidant status, and reducing lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, monosaccharide composition analysis showed that fucose may play a vital role in guaranteeing stronger hepatoprotection. These results may provide references for the exploitation of the SMS of L. sulphureus as a source of H-SMPS and E-SMPS, which in turn can be used as functional foods or natural drugs for the prevention of ALD and other liver diseases.

Abstract
We investigated the protective effect of vitamin D against liver damage caused by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Twenty-four male rats were divided into four equal groups: G1, untreated controls; G2, administered CCl4; G3, administered both CCl4 and vitamin D for 10 weeks; G4, administered CCl4 for 10 weeks and vitamin D for 12 weeks. At the end of experiment, intracardiac blood samples were taken and liver samples were removed. Hepatic damage due to CCl4 was assessed using biochemistry and histopathology. Glutathione (GSH) levels decreased, while malondialdehyde (MDA) levels increased in liver tissues of G2. Alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl-transaminase (GGT) levels increased, while albumin (ALB) levels decreased. Hepatocyte degeneration, lobular disorder, sinusoid dilation, focal necrotic areas, hyperemia, and glycogen loss were observed. Hepatic fibrosis was observed around portal areas and central veins. Bridging fibrous septa were formed between portal veins. By immunohistochemistry, both matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and desmin reactivity were increased. All aspects of liver damage were at least partially prevented in rats treated with vitamin D. Vitamin D appears to act as an antioxidant and anti-fibrotic to protect the rat liver against damage.

Abstract
In this study, we noted that the Al-MPS from Pleurotus eryngii var. tuolensis provoked pharmacological effects on blood lipid profiles and oxidative stress. Animal studies demonstrated that Al-MPS showed potential effects on relieving hyperlipidemia and preventing oxidative stress, reflecting by decreasing the levels of serum enzyme activities (ALP, ALT and AST), restoring the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GSH-Px, CAT and T-AOC), down-regulating the MDA and LPO contents, as well as remitting the hepatic and cardiac tissues injury, respectively. The serum levels of TC, TG, LDL-C, VLDL-C, and HDL-C on mice treated with Al-MPS (500mg/kg bw) reached 2.48±0.08, 1.24±0.03, 0.84±0.02, 0.34±0.02, and 1.80±0.03mmol/L, which were lower/higher against the hyperlipidemia mice. The results clearly indicated that the Al-MPS could be used as a beneficial health food and potentially natural candidate medicine in preventing the high-fat emulsion-induced hyperlipidemia.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the preventive effects of Red Fuji apple peel polyphenolic extract (APP) on vascular endothelial dysfunction and liver injury in mice fed a high choline diet. The mice were fed 3% dietary choline in drinking water for 8 weeks and displayed vascular dysfunction and liver damage (p < 0.01). The administration of APP at 600 and 900 mg per kg bw significantly elevated serum NO, HDL and 6-Keto-PGF1a levels and lowered serum TC, TG, LDL, ET-1 and TXB2 levels in the HC-fed mice. Besides, APP also caused the reduction of AST, ALT activities and MDA, CRP, TNF-α levels, and increased the hepatic GSH-Px and SOD activities of the HC-fed mice. Furthermore, the histopathology of the liver by conventional H&E and oil red O staining confirmed the liver steatosis induced by a choline diet and the hepatoprotective effect of APP. The experiment results indicated that the polyphenolic extract from apple peel might be regarded as a preventive and therapeutic product for the amelioration of HC diet-induced vascular dysfunction and hepatic injury.

Abstract
In this study, native depolymerised-exopolysaccharides (DEPS) were successfully derived from the exopolysaccharides (EPS) of Termitomyces albuminosus, and its hepatoprotective effects against a high-fat emulsion and in vitro antioxidant activities were investigated. Based on the results of in vitro assays, DEPS showed superior antioxidant activities compared with EPS dose-dependently. According to the in vivo assays both EPS and DEPS significantly decreased the lipid levels, improved the enzymatic activities, and reduced lipid peroxidation in both serum and hepatic homogenates. Furthermore, EPS and DEPS attenuated the high-fat emulsion-induced histopathological injury to the liver. Both EPS and DEPS might be used as natural drugs to treat and protect against hyperlipidaemia and liver injury induced by a high-fat emulsion. In addition, based on the results of GC and HPLC analyses, rhamnose and low molecular weight compounds may play an important role in contributing to the antioxidant activities of EPS and DEPS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In order to further develop and utilise Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino seeds, a detailed analysis of the characteristics of G. pentaphyllum seed oil (GPSO), including its physico-chemical parameters, fatty acid composition and unsaponifiable matter constituents, has been investigated in this study. The antioxidant potential of GPSO was evaluated by radical-scavenging activity and ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay in vitro, and the antioxidant activity in vivo was examined by using an aged mice model. RESULTS The main components of the seeds are lipids (485.54 g kg-1 ) and proteins (203.26 g kg-1 ). The GPSO obtained by supercritical CO2 fluid extraction was rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (92.85%), especially conjugated linolenic acid (88.17%); and various useful compounds (squalene, tocopherol and phytosterols) were identified in the unsaponifiable matter. The overall antioxidant capacity of GPSO in vitro was shown to be comparable to that of Camellia seed oil as a positive control. GPSO could provide protection to the aged mice against oxidative stress and minimised the impact of ageing. CONCLUSION All the results suggest that GPSO has direct and potent antioxidant activities; it could be utilised as a functional food to supplement or replace some conventional oils. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The hepatoprotective activity of the EtOH-water extract of Ziziphus jujuba leaves was evaluated against CCl4-induced hepatic damage in mice. The EtOH-water extract significantly alleviated liver damage as indicated by the decreased levels of serum ALT and AST and the decreased MDA content, the increased levels of SOD, GSH and GSH-Px, and the reduced pathological tissue injury induced by CCl4. A quantitative analysis of fifteen major constituents (1-15) of the EtOH-water extract of the leaves of Z. jujuba was conducted by HPLC-DAD. Based on our research results, it can be concluded that the EtOH-water extract of the leaves of Z. jujuba is efficacious for prevention and treatment of CCl4-induced hepatic injury in mice. Flavonoids might be the active ingredients responsible for the biological and pharmacological activities towards hepatoprotection.

Abstract
Biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using Sargassum swartzii and its anti-diabetic effect were studied using male wistar Albino rats. Formation of AuNPs were confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, High-Resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Fasting blood glucose levels, serum insulin, hemoglobin and glycosylated hemoglobin levels in diabetic treated rats with AuNPs were significantly decreased compared to the control group. The results of the blood glucose level and serum insulin levels indicated that AuNPs could significantly improve the insulin resistance and glucose level in diabetic rats. AuNPs also shows reduction in anti-inflammation, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6 and high-sensitive C-reactive protein in diabetic rats. The data showed that AuNPs synthesized using S. swartzii exerted antidiabetic effect, accordingly improve pancreas, liver and kidney damage caused by alloxan induced diabetic rats.
