Abstract
There is a lack of research on the effects of amino acid starch interaction on the functional properties of products during Ultra-high pressure (UHP) processing. The functional properties of rice starch with the addition of Glu, Ala and Lys were studied under UHP processing. At 400 MPa, all amino acids reduced G' and weakened the gel strength, and the gel strength order was as follows: Control > Ala > Glu > Lys. At 500 MPa, Glu increased G' and G″, and enhanced the strength of the gel, but the addition of Lys had the opposite effects, the gel strength order was as follows: Glu > Ala > Control > Lys. With the increased of treatment pressure and time, the G' and G″ of all samples treated at 500 MPa decreased, and the gel strength weakened. This study will expand the application scope of rice starch as food gelling agents and functional food.

Abstract
Curcumin is a naturally occurring hydrophobic polyphenolic compound with a rapid metabolism, poor absorption, and low stability, which severely limits its bioavailability. Here, we employed a starch-protein-based nanoparticle approach to improve the curcumin bioavailability. This study focused on synthesizing nanoparticles with a zein "core" and a carboxymethylated short-chain amylose (CSA) "shell" through anti-solvent precipitation for delivering curcumin. The zein@CSA core-shell nanoparticles were extensively characterized for physicochemical properties, structural integrity, ionic stability, in vitro digestibility, and antioxidant activity. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicates nanoparticle formation through hydrogen-bonding, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions between zein and CSA. Zein@CSA core-shell nanoparticles exhibited enhanced stability in NaCl solution. At a zein-to-CSA ratio of 1:1.25, only 15.7% curcumin was released after 90 min of gastric digestion, and 66% was released in the intestine after 240 min, demonstrating a notable sustained release effect. Furthermore, these nanoparticles increased the scavenging capacity of the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) free radical compared to those composed solely of zein and were essentially nontoxic to Caco-2 cells. This research offers valuable insights into curcumin encapsulation and delivery using zein@CSA core-shell nanoparticles.

Abstract
Corn starch dispersions were heated with ethanol (E) and reacted with phytic acid (E-PA), citric acid (E-CA), and a mixture of phytic and citric acid (E-PACA) under dry-heating to prepare heavy metal adsorbents. Microscopy images indicated that ethanol treatment induced the formation of porous structures on the surface; furthermore, treatment with phytic and citric acid induced indentations, pores, and irregular structures in E-PA, E-CA, and E-PACA starches. Phytic and citric acid were retained in the starch molecules through ester bonds with the phosphate and carboxyl groups, respectively. Starch esterification by phytic and citric acid induced a loss of crystallinity, high water absorption capacity, and low solubility. E-PACA starch exhibited more efficient Cu2+ adsorption (38.13 mg/g) than native, E, E-PA, and E-CA starches (0.11, 0.49, 2.05, and 36.23 mg/g, respectively). Thus, modification with ethanol, phytic acid and citric acid can be applied to prepare natural starch-based heavy metal adsorbents.

Abstract
Water safety concerns are increasing tremendously as a result of the rising population and environmental pollution. As a result, viable water treatment approaches need to be designed to meet the water consumption demands of the population, particularly in developing countries. The recent technological advances in water treatment and purification are well articulated in this review. The efficiency of the materials used for purification and their affordability for people living in rural and remote settlements in various parts of the world have been discussed. Water treatment techniques prior to the rapid advancement of science and technology included a variety of strategies such as coagulation/flocculation, filtration, disinfection, flotation and pH correction. The use of nanotechnology in water treatment and purification has modernized the purification process. Therefore, efficient removal of microbes such as bacteria and viruses are exquisitely accomplished. These technologies may include membrane filtration, ultraviolet irradiation, advanced oxidation ion-exchange and biological filtration technologies. Thus, nanotechnology allows for the fabrication of less expensive systems, allowing even low-income people to benefit from it. Most developing countries find these technologies particularly valuable because access to clean and safe water for drinking and residential needs is critical. This is because access to municipal water supplies is also difficult. Abstract
Our aim was to investigate the preparation of self-assembled garlic essential oil-amylose inclusion complexes (SGAs) using garlic essential oil (GEO) and corn starch (CS), and evaluated their release properties. SGAs were fabricated by pre-gelatinization coupling with high-speed shear at different GEO-CS mass ratios. When the mass ratio of GEO to pre-gelatinized corn starch was set at 15 % (SGA-15 %), with a fixed shear rate of 9000 rpm and a shear time of 30 min, the allicin content was 0.573 ± 0.023 mg/g. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed a starch V-type crystalline structure in SGAs with peaks at 13.0°, 18.0°, and 20.0° (2θ). Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of SGAs displayed a shift in the characteristic peak of diallyl trisulfide from 987.51 cm-1 to 991.45 cm-1. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images revealed that SGAs exhibited lamellar structures covered with small granules. SGAs exhibited higher residual mass (approximately 12 %) than other samples. The resistant starch content of SGAs increased from 10.1 % to 18.4 % as GEO contents varied from 5 % to 15 %. In vitro digestion tests showed that about 53.21 % of allicin remained in SGA-15 % after 8 h. Therefore, this dual treatment can be a new method for fabricating controlled-release inclusion complexes of guest molecules.

Abstract
The present study synthesised and characterised zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using spinach tree, Cnidoscolus aconitifolius and investigated its potential use as nanofertilizer. The synthesised nanoparticles showed UV-Vis absorption peak at 378 nm which is a feature of ZnO NPs. FT-IR analysis further revealed the presence of O-H stretching, C = C bending, O-H bending and C-N stretching functional groups of the stabilising action of the plant extract on the surface of the nanoparticles. SEM images displayed the shape of NPs to be spherical whereas TEM images showed their distribution sizes to be 100 nm. Synthesised ZnO NPs were used as a nano fertilizer on Sorghum bicolour plant. An increase in the shoot leaf length with an average length of 16.13 ± 0.19 cm as compared to the control group of 15.13 ± 0.07 cm was observed. The rate of photosynthesis also showed a significant increase with total chlorophyll content of 0.2806 ± 0.006 mg/mL as compared with control of 0.2476 ± 0.002 mg/mL. The activity of antioxidative enzymes was measured with an increase in the specific activity of SOD in the plant when ZnO NPs were used over NPK whereas, the specific activities of CAT were similar in all cases.

Abstract
The elucidation of multi-scale structural variation and oxidation reaction mechanism of ozone oxidized waxy rice starch molecules remains a big challenge, limiting its development of intensive processing. In the present work, the changes in the structure of waxy rice starch after ozone treatment were systematically researched by various characterization methods. The study has shown that with the increase in ozone oxidation time, the granules of oxidized starch were polygons with multiple face depressions. It was also observed that ozone first attacked the amorphous zone of the starch granules and then penetrated the crystalline zone. Combining 1D and 2D NMR (1H NMR, 13C NMR, HSQC and HMBC) and other methods, it was proved that ozone oxidation led to ring splitting between C2 and C3 of the glucose unit. The resulting hemiacetal groups showed different types of structures. Among them, the main structures were intramolecular acetals and intermolecular hemiacetals. This research offered theoretical guidance for the utilization of ozone oxidation technology for starch modification and the development of waxy rice new foods.

Abstract
In this study, an environmentally sustainable process of crystal violet, congo red, methylene blue, brilliant green, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ ions adsorption from aqueous solutions onto amino-modified starch derivatives was investigated. The degree of substitution, elemental analysis, swelling capacity, solubility, and FTIR, XRD, and SEM techniques were used to characterize the adsorbents. The influence of pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration has been studied to optimize the adsorption conditions. The amino-modified starch was the most effective in removing crystal violet (CV) (65.31-80.46 %) and Pb2+ (67.44-80.33 %) within the optimal adsorption conditions (pH 5, 10 mg dm-3, 25 °C, 180 min). The adsorption of CV could be described by both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms, while the adsorption of Pb2+ ions was better described by the Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second order model can be used to describe the adsorption kinetics of CV and Pb2+ on all tested samples. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption of CV was exothermic, while the Pb2+ adsorption was endothermic. The simultaneous removal of CV and Pb2+ from the binary mixture has shown their competitive behavior. Thus, the amino-modified starch is a promising eco-friendly adsorbent for the removal of dyes and heavy metals from polluted water.

Abstract
Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) was produced from type-A, B and C native starches (corn, potato and Trichosanthes kirilowii pulp starches respectively), via the nanoprecipitation method. The SNPs showed different amylose contents, water contact angles, surface morphologies and urea clearance performances. In this work, to examine the parameters of SNPs that may change the urea adsorption capacity, urea adsorption performance in adsorption environments with different pH values, urea concentrations, and adsorption times was examined. Thereafter, the characteristics of SNPs were tested by water contact angle measurements (WCA), transmission electron microscopy, specific surface area measurements, gel permeation chromatography, and zeta potential analysis. The results showed that the Trichosanthes kirilowii pulp (C) SNPs show better adsorption than the corn (A) and potato (B) SNPs. The hydrophobicity of SNPs promotes the urea adsorption of the SNPs. Using grey relational analysis, it was found that WCA and Mn are the critical parameter affecting the adsorption performance, with WCA and Mn within the ranges of 31-33° and 1900-2100 kDa, respectively, were found to be the conditions for optimal urea adsorption.

Abstract
Starch paste is a very complex dispersion that cannot be clearly classified as a solution, colloid or suspension and many factors affects its properties. As these ambiguities constitute a barrier to technological development, the aim of this study was to investigate the interaction of starch macromolecules with water by analysing the results of rheological properties, low field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF NMR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and ζ potential analyses. Starch pastes with a concentration of 1%, prepared with distilled water and buffered to pH values of 2.5, 7.0 and 9.5 were analysed. It was proved that the pH buffering substantially decreased the values of consistency index but the pH value itself was not significant. LF NMR studies indicated that the dissolution of starch in water resulted in a reduction in spin-lattice as well as spin-spin relaxation times. Moreover, changes in relaxation times followed the patterns observed in rheological studies. Electrokinetic and DLS analyses showed that potential values are primarily influenced by the properties of the starches themselves and, to a lesser extent, by the environmental conditions. The conducted research also showed complementarity and, to some extent, substitutability of the applied research methods as well as exclusion chromatography (a method not used in this work).

Abstract
The food packaging sector generates large volumes of plastic waste due to the high demand for packaged products with a short shelf-life. Biopolymers such as starch-based materials are a promising alternative to non-renewable resins, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly food packaging alternative for single-use products. This article provides a chronology of the development of starch-based materials for food packaging. Particular emphasis is placed on the challenges faced in processing these materials using conventional processing techniques for thermoplastics and other emerging techniques such as electrospinning and 3D printing. The improvement of the performance of starch-based materials by blending with other biopolymers, use of micro- and nano-sized reinforcements, and chemical modification of starch is discussed. Finally, an overview of recent developments of these materials in smart food packaging is given.

Abstract
Nowadays, starch nanoparticles (SNPs) are drawing attention to the scientific community due to their versatility and wide range of applications. Although several works have extensively addressed the SNP production routes, not much is discussed about the SNPs modification techniques, as well as the use of modified SNPs in typical and unconventional applications. Here, we focused on the SNP modification strategies and characteristics and performance of the resulting products, as well as their practical applications, while pointing out the main limitations and recommendations. We aim to guide researchers by identifying the next steps in this emerging line of research. SNPs esterification and oxidation are preferred chemical modifications, which result in changes in the functional groups. Moreover, additional polymers are incorporated into the SNP surface through copolymer grafting. Physical modification of starch has demonstrated similar changes in the functional groups without the need for toxic chemicals. Modified SNPs rendered differentiated properties, such as size, shape, crystallinity, hydrophobicity, and Zeta-potential. For multiple applications, tailoring the aforementioned properties is key to the performance of nanoparticle-based systems. However, the number of studies focusing on emerging applications is fairly limited, while their applications as drug delivery systems lack in vivo studies. The main challenges and prospects were discussed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of whey protein isolate (WPI) on the digestibility and physicochemical properties of potato starch (PS) after heat treatment. WPI reduced the digestibility of PS and increased the order and aggregation structure of gelatinized PS. Examination of the rheological properties of the PS-WPI mixed system before and after adding different chemicals (sodium chloride, urea, and sodium dodecyl sulfate) indicated an involvement of hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions in the PS-WPI gelatinization system. The pasting properties, swelling power, and thermal properties indicated that WPI suppressed the swelling and gelatinization of PS. The addition of WPI reduced the amylose leaching rate from the starch granules, indicating that the presence of exogenous protein could prevent amylose diffusion from the starch granules. Native WPI and its hydrolysate also inhibited amyloglucosidase activity. These findings indicated that the mechanism by which WPI reduces PS digestion involves hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding between WPI and PS, as well as enzyme activity inhibition.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to develop a simple and efficient method to prepare waxy maize starch nanoparticles (SNPs) by hydrochloric acid (HCl) vapor hydrolysis combined with ultrasonication treatment. The size, morphology, thermal property, and crystal structure of the SNPs were systematically studied. HCl treatment introduces a smaller particle diameter of starch particles from 13.73 ± 0.93 μm to 1.52 ± 0.01-8.32 ± 0.63 μm. Further ultrasonication treatment formed SNPs that displayed desirable uniformity and near-perfect spherical and ellipsoidal shapes with a diameter of 150.65 ± 1.91-292.85 ± 0.07 nm. The highest yield of SNPs was 80.5%. Compared with the native starch, the gelatinization enthalpy changes of SNPs significantly decreased from 14.65 ± 1.58 J/g to 7.40 ± 1.27 J/g. Interestingly, the SNPs showed a wider melting temperature range of 22.77 ± 2.35 °C than native starch (10.94 ± 0.87 °C). The relative crystallinity of SNPs decreased to 29.65%, while long-time ultrasonication resulted in amorphization. HCl vapor hydrolysis combined with ultrasonication treatment can be an affordable and accessible method for the efficient large-scale production of SNPs. The SNPs developed by this method will have potential applications in the food, materials, and medicine industries.

Abstract
In this study, luteolin-oxidized lotus root starch (OLRS) nanoparticles (NPs) were developed to improve the stability and antioxidant activity of luteolin. Results showed that a stable luteolin-OLRS NPs was formed using luteolin and OLRS (oxidation degree, 15%) in the weight ratio of 3:1, as well as anti-solvent and solvent in the volume ratio of 10:1. Under this condition, the particle size, polydispersity index and zeta-potential of luteolin-OLRS NPs was 305 nm, 0.173 and -20.8 mV, respectively. The analysis of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that the luteolin was successfully encapsulated in OLRS NPs, giving an encapsulation efficiency of 87.2%. The release characteristic and antioxidant activity of encapsulated luteolin were further investigated. Results exhibited that the OLRS NPs enabled luteolin to be stable in simulated gastric fluid and sustained release in simulated intestinal fluid, leading to the enhancement of antioxidant activity of luteolin.

Abstract
Lead (Pb) is a pestilent and relatively nonbiodegradable heavy metal, which causes severe health effects by inducing inflammation and oxidative stress in animal and human tissues. This is because of its significant tolerance and capability to bind Pb (430 mg/L) and thermodynamic fitness to sequester Pb in the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.98421) in vitro. Lactobacillus acidophilus KLDS1.1003 was selected for further in vivo study both in free and maize resistant starch (MRS)–based microencapsulated forms to assess its bioremediation aptitude against chronic Pb lethality using adult female BALB/c mice as a model animal. Orally administered free and microencapsulated KLDS 1.1003 provided significant protection by reducing Pb levels in the blood (127.92 ± 5.220 and 101.47 ± 4.142 µg/L), kidneys (19.86 ± 0.810 and 18.02 ± 0.735 µg/g), and liver (7.27 ± 0.296 and 6.42 ± 0.262 µg/g). MRS-microencapsulated KLDS 1.0344 improved the antioxidant index and inhibited changes in blood and serum enzyme concentrations and relieved the Pb-induced renal and hepatic pathological damages. SEM and EDS microscopy showed that the Pb covered the surfaces of cells and was chiefly bound due to the involvement of the carbon and oxygen elements. Similarly, FTIR showed that the amino, amide, phosphoryl, carboxyl, and hydroxyl functional groups of bacteria and MRS were mainly involved in Pb biosorption. Based on these findings, free and microencapsulated L. acidophilus KLDS 1.0344 could be considered a potential dietetic stratagem in alleviating chronic Pb toxicity.

Abstract
Starch is one of the most common biodegradable polymers found in nature, and it is widely utilized in the food and beverage, bioplastic industry, paper industry, textile, and biofuel industries. Starch has received significant attention due to its environmental benignity, easy fabrication, relative abundance, non-toxicity, and biodegradability. However, native starch cannot be directly used due to its poor thermo-mechanical properties and higher water absorptivity. Therefore, native starch needs to be modified before its use. Major starch modification techniques include genetic, enzymatic, physical, and chemical. Among those, chemical modification techniques are widely employed in industries. This review presents comprehensive coverage of chemical starch modification techniques and genetic, enzymatic, and physical methods developed over the past few years. In addition, the current applications of chemically modified starch in the fields of packaging, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, superabsorbent and wastewater treatment have also been discussed.

Abstract
Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals (HMs) poses a serious threat to global food safety, soil ecosystem and human health. The rapid industrialization, urbanization and extensive application of agrochemicals on arable land have led to paddy soil pollution worldwide. Rice plants easily accumulate toxic HMs from contaminated agricultural soils, which ultimately accumulated in grains and enters the food chain. Although, physical and chemical remediation techniques have been used for the treatment of HMs-contaminated soils, however, they also have many drawbacks, such as toxicity, capital investment and environmental-associated hazards. Recently, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have gained substantial attention owing to their promising environmental remediation applications. Numerous studies have revealed the use of ENMs for reclamation of toxic HMs from contaminated environment. This review mainly focuses on HMs toxicity in paddy soils along with potential health risks to humans. It also provides a critical outlook on the recent advances and future perspectives of nanoremediation strategies. Additionally, we will also propose the interacting mechanism of HMs-ENMs to counteract metal-associated phytotoxicities in rice plants to achieve global food security and environmental safety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nanoscale tapioca starch (NTS) was successfully developed by high-speed jet in our previous study. In this study, the adsorption capacity of Cu2+ onto NTS was further discussed. The optimal adsorption conditions (pH, contact time, contact temperature, initial Cu2+ concentration, and adsorbent concentration), adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic were also evaluated. RESULTS The results showed that NTS exhibited excellent performance in adsorption of Cu2+ , with adsorption capacities of 122.31 mg g-1 for Cu2+ (pH 7, 0.04 g L-1 , 0.2 g L-1 , 313.15 K and 10 min). The pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherms models could be used to explain the adsorption kinetics and adsorption equilibrium, respectively. The thermodynamic results showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic with an increase in entropy. Cu2+ was adsorbed onto NTS, which was confirmed by energy dispersive spectrometry analysis. CONCLUSION These findings indicated that NTS might be an effective, environment-friendly and renewable bio-resource adsorbent for removing heavy metals in industrial effluent. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Starch nanoparticles were prepared by citrate esterification and ultrasound treatment. With the increase of ultrasonic treatment time, the mean size and PDI of the particles decreased gradually, when the ultrasonic treatment time was 5 min, the prepared starch nanoparticles had a mean size and PDI of 352.8 nm and 0.292, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the starch nanoparticles prepared by ultrasonic treatment for 5 min had an A-type crystalline structure and a crystallinity of 41.42%. The chitosan composite films were reinforced by esterified starch with different ultrasound treatment times, the results indicated that the addition of starch nanoparticles resulted in a significant increase in the mechanical properties of films. This study indicates that esterification and ultrasound treatment can be used to prepare starch nanoparticles with a higher crystallinity and higher efficiency, which will further promote the application of nanocomposite films in packaging applications.

Abstract
The presence of polyfunctional ligands on the bio-macromolecules acts as an efficient adsorbent for heavy metal ions. Starch is one of the most abundant, easily available and cheap biopolymer of plant origin. However, native starch exhibits significantly low adsorption capacity due to the absence of some essential functional groups like carboxyl, amino or ester groups and is thus modified using various reaction routes like grafting, cross-linking, esterification, oxidation and irradiation for addition of functional groups to increase its adsorption capacity. The present review provides a comprehensive discussion on the above mentioned modification schemes of starch over the last 10-15 years highlighting their preparation methods, physico-chemical characteristics along with their adsorption capacities and mechanisms of heavy metal ions from water.

Abstract
In this study, two types of modified cassava starch samples (MCS and MWS) prepared from commercially available native cassava starch (NCS) and native cassava starch extracted using the wet method (NWS) were investigated for the removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions. MCS and MWS samples were synthesized under acidic conditions using Pluronic 123 as the structure-directing agent and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as the chemical modifying agent. Modified starch samples were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and a nitrogen (N2) gas adsorption–desorption analyser. MCS and MWS showed enhanced thermal stabilities upon acid hydrolysis and chemical modification. The effects of contact time and initial Pb(II) concentration were studied through batch adsorption experiments. Adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption data were analysed and compared by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. The coefficient correlation (R2) was employed as a measure of the fit. The Langmuir model fitted well with equilibrium adsorption data, giving a maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of 370.37 and 294.12 mg/g for MWS and MCS, respectively. Modified samples exhibited a higher desorption efficiency of over 97%. This study demonstrated that modified starch could be utilized for Pb(II) removal from industrial wastewater.

Abstract
Starch, which is a carbohydrate polymer with a semicrystalline granular structure, has been the subject of academic research for decades due to its renewable and biodegradable property as well as various applications in food, pharmaceutical and other industries. Nano-starch (NS) is a novel type of starch material with unique physiochemical properties due to its small size. However, the nano-size nature of NS determines its tendency to agglomeration as a natural process to approach a thermodynamically steady state, and the single hydroxyl functional group is also not favorable to its applications in hydrophobic environments. Thus, modified-NS with improved dispersion property, hydrophobicity, and stability is emerging as a new research direction. However, information about modified-NS is sporadic in literature, and a systematic review from its preparation, application, the problem and challenge as well as related health concerns is carried out to further the understanding of modified-NS. It is expected that the theoretical basis and new insight into the development of modified-NS will be improved.

Abstract
The development of advanced adsorbents with fast adsorption rate, simple preparation, low cost, and high adsorption capacity is one of the most important topics for water purification. Herein, a novel and pollution-free adsorbent, three-dimensional nanoporous starch-based nanomaterial (3D-PSN), was prepared via sacrifice template method and functionalized for the first time in this work. Relevant characterization was performed through XRD, SEM, TGA, zeta potential analysis, FTIR, and XPS to confirm the formation of nanomaterials. Owing to its unique three-dimensional network nanostructure and abundant active sites, this adsorbent displayed outstanding adsorption properties for heavy metal ions removal, as high as 532.28 mg/g for Cd (II), 381.47 mg/g for Hg(II), 354.15 mg/g for Cu(II), 238.39 mg/g for Pb(II), completed within 30 min. In this process, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model appeared more consistent with the adsorption kinetic data, and the adsorption behavior complied with the Langmuir adsorption model. The adsorption mechanism mainly replied on the ion-exchange reaction, as well as chemical complexation formation. This adsorbent has remarkable recyclability, exhibiting strong application prospects for water purification and environmental remediation.

Abstract
Resource utilization of wastes through effective separation is a major challenge in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Photocatalytic degradation is a powerful water treatment technology but has no selectivity in degradation of various coexisting contaminants due to its strong oxidation. In this work, a complex film composed of CdS and carboxylmethyl starch (CdS/CMS) was designed and fabricated using in situ formation method. The morphology, composition, and optical property of this film were investigated in detail by various characterization methods. CdS was well distributed in the starch matrix, and the absorption wavelength of this film was still located in the visible light region. This starch-based complex film was used to remove various organic dyes [methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and rhodamine B (RhB)] from aqueous solutions by two consecutive processes of adsorption enrichment and photocatalysis degradation. 0.1 g of CdS/CMS film can remove approximately 86.72% of MB and 81.03% of CV in 120 min. CdS/CMS still exhibited evidently selective photocatalysis degradation of MB and CV in MB/RhB and CV/RhB binary systems, respectively, and had nearly no effect on RhB. The cationic groups on MB and CV can effectively interact with negatively carboxyl groups of CMS via electrostatic interactions, causing their good affinities; but the anionic groups on RhB had an electrostatic repulsion to the starch matrix. The considerably different affinities of various dyes to CMS triggered strong adsorption preferences and great selective degradation effectiveness. The selectivity of CdS/CMS could not be influenced by pH and some coexisting inorganic anions. Furthermore, this complex film did not require regeneration and could be reused directly with low removal capacity loss. Therefore, a new and simple strategy was provided to realize the effective separation and recovery of target contaminants in water by photocatalytic degradation technology.

Abstract
Nanoparticles (NPs) can form a protein corona (PC) with proteins in biological fluids. We examined whether starch nanoparticles (SNPs) form a PC and interact with digestive enzymes in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids. We investigated the adsorption of pepsin and trypsin on unmodified, carboxyl-, and amino-modified SNPs (SNPs, COOH-SNPs, and NH2-SNPs, respectively). Quartz crystal microbalance data showed that a tight and irreversible pepsin corona formed on the NH2-SNPs, pepsin had little or no binding to the SNPs and COOH-SNPs, and trypsin had weak binding to all three kinds of NPs. Dynamic light scattering data showed that pepsin significantly increased the size of the NH2-SNPs from 120 ± 2.6 to 203 ± 12.2 nm and decreased their surface potential from 23.2 ± 1.0 to 12.7 ± 0.2 mV. NH2-SNPs could induce the fluorescence quenching of pepsin and change its secondary structures without affecting its activity.

Abstract
Biochar adsorbents used to treat different heavy metals in water are efficient and low-cost. Appropriate raw materials, excellent selectivity and detailed adsorption mechanism are of important for research on biochar adsorbents. In this work, konjac starch was dispersed in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solution to prepare different sizes hydrophilic carbon spheres (HCSs) by hydrothermal synthesis method. Adsorption kinetics of the HCSs towards Pb2+ is described perfectly by the pseudo-second-order equation. With the temperature increasing, adsorption thermodynamics are more consistent with the Freundlich model. The calculated ΔG, ΔH and ΔS shows the adsorption of the HCSs towards Pb2+ is a spontaneous, endothermic and entropy increase process. In addition, HCSs have excellent selectivity for the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+. HCSs prepared from konjac starch make full use of natural biomass resources, they can be used as a potential adsorbent material in treatment on heavy metal ion from water field.

Abstract
Enzymatic hydrolysis and self-assembly are considered promising methods for preparation of starch nanoparticles (SNPs) because they are environmentally friendly, and time- and cost-effective. These methods are based on the self-assembly of short-chain glucans released from the α-1,6 bonds in amylopectin. Since their discovery, many studies have described the structural and physicochemical properties of self-assembled SNPs. Self-assembled SNPs can be prepared by two methods: using only the soluble portion containing the short-chain glucans, or using the whole hydrolyzate including both insoluble and soluble fractions. Although the structural and physical properties of self-assembled SNPs can be attributed to the composition of the hydrolyzates that participate in self-assembly, this aspect has not yet been discussed. This review focuses on SNPs self-assembled with only soluble short-chain glucans and addresses their characteristics, including formation mechanisms as well as structural and physicochemical properties, compared with SNPs prepared with total hydrolyzates.

Abstract
Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) have become one of the most interesting nanocarriers due to their relatively easy synthesis, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, the practical applications of SNPs are limited, as their aggregation reduce their functionality. Here, SNPs obtained by recrystallizing debranched waxy maize starch were modified using oxygen and ammonia vacuum cold plasma (CP). The modified SNPs were measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, showing a new carbonyl or carboxyl peak at 1720 cm-1. SNPs modified with oxygen CP treatment have negative charges (-21.6 to -15.1 mV). Modified SNPs with diameter ranging from 75.94 to 159.72 nm had good dispersibility without much aggregation. The relative crystallinity of modified SNPs decreased from 44.13% to 33.80%. Moreover, modified SNPs showed high absorption of tea polyphenols, indicating that as nanocarriers, they can accommodate more cargo molecules than primary SNPs. CP modification of SNPs is simple, green, and inexpensive. Modified SNPs can be used as nanocarriers to deliver drug or food components in the food and pharmaceuticals industries.

Abstract
With the goal of improving the mechanical strength of chitosan hydrogels, gallic acid modified carboxymethyl chitosan/iron ion (GA-CMCS/FeIII) complex hydrogels were initially prepared via noncovalent interactions and metal coordination. 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and Fourier trantsform infrared spectra analysis confirmed the covalent reactions between CMCS and GA. The formation of GA-CMCS hydrogel occurred through electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophobic interactions. GA-CMCS/FeIII hydrogel (380 kPa) exhibited higher compressive strength than GA-CMCS hydrogel (315 kPa). In addition, GA-CMCS/FeIII aerogel displayed satisfactory mechanical strength (1.59 MPa) and high-efficiency adsorption capacities up to 97.15 mg/g for Pb2+, 99.75 mg/g for Cd2+, and 98.50 mg/g for Cu2+, respectively. In addition, both of the GA-CMCS and GA-CMCS/FeIII aerogel adsorbents exhibited satisfactory recyclability. The design of GA-CMCS and GA-CMCS/FeIII hydrogels and aerogels offers a new opportunity for the construction of physically multi-cross-linked systems with excellent mechanical properties.
