Abstract
This work presents an innovative solid sampling (SS) integrated electrothermal vaporization (ETV) approach for simultaneous determination of Cd and Hg based on differentiated elemental vaporization and transportation behavior characteristics. A miniature N2/H2 generator, only consuming electricity and H2O, was utilized to yield reducing atmosphere for Cd vaporization; MgO filler was modified to absorb matrix interferent and keep Hg and Cd transportation via 1st catalytic pyrolysis furnace (CPF); and a gearing was employed to move 2nd CPF to receive and trap (amalgamation) the vaporized Hg from ETV and then thermo-release them for simultaneous detection. Under optimized conditions, the limits of detection of Cd and Hg reached 0.02-0.04 ng/g using 0.4 g sample size. The linearities (R2) exceeded 0.998 and recoveries were 85.0-111.9%, indicating favorable analysis precision and accuracy within ∼3 min without sample digestion process. The proposed HgCd analyzer is suitable for rapid monitoring food with simplicity, green and safety.

Abstract
We have developed an innovative optical emission spectrometry imaging device integrating a diode laser for sample introduction and an atmospheric pressure plasma based on dielectric barrier discharge for atomization and excitation. By optimizing the device parameters and ensuring appropriate leaf moisture, we achieved effective imaging with a lateral resolution as low as 50 μm. This device allows for tracking the accumulation of Cd and related species such as K, Zn, and O2+∙, in plant leaves exposed to different Cd levels and culture times. The results obtained are comparable to established in-lab imaging and quantitative methods. With its features of compact construction, minimal sample preparation, ease of operation, and low limit of detection (0.04 μg/g for Cd), this novel methodology shows promise as an in-situ elemental imaging tool for interdisciplinary applications.

Abstract
Background: Cadmium (Cd) is a very toxic and carcinogenic heavy metal even at low levels and it is naturally present in water as well as in food. Methods: A new polyvinyl benzyl xanthate (PvbXa) was synthesized and used as a new adsorbent in this work. It contains pendant sulfide groups on the main polystyryl chain. Using this new adsorbent, PvbXa, a vortex-assisted dispersive solid-phase microextraction (VA-dSPµE) procedure was developed for the determination of cadmium from food and water samples via flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS). Synthesized PvbXa was characterized by 1H Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The different parameters of pH, sample volume, mixing type and time, sorbent amount, and eluent time were optimized using standard analytical methods. Results: The optimized method for assessment of Cd in food and water samples shows good reliability. The optimum conditions were found to be a 0.20-150 µg L-1 linear range, 0.06 µg L-1 LOD, 0.20 µg L-1 LOQ, 4.3 RSD %, and a preconcentration factor of 160. Conclusions: The statistically experimental variables were utilized using a central composite design (CCD). The present method is a low-cost, simple, sensitive, and very effective tool for the recovery of Cd.

Abstract
The considerable increase in world energy consumption owing to rising global population, intercontinental transportation and industrialization has posed numerous environmental concerns. Particularly, in order to meet the required electricity supply, thermal power plants for electricity generation are widely used in many countries. However, an annually excessive quantity of waste fly ash up to 1 billion tones was globally discarded from the combustion of various carbon-containing feedstocks in thermoelectricity plants. About half of the industrially generated fly ash is dumped into landfills and hence causing soil and water contamination. Nonetheless, fly ash still contains many valuable components and possesses outstanding physicochemical properties. Utilizing waste fly ash for producing value-added products has gained significant interests. Therefore, in this work, we reviewed the current implementation of fly ash-derived materials, namely, zeolite and geopolymer as efficient adsorbents for the environmental treatment of flue gas and polluted water. Additionally, the usage of fly ash as a catalyst support for the photodegradation of organic pollutants and reforming processes for the corresponding wastewater remediation and H2 energy generation is thoroughly covered. In comparison with conventional carbon-based adsorbents, fly ash-derived geopolymer and zeolite materials reportedly exhibited greater heavy metal ions removal and reached the maximum adsorption capacity of about 150 mg g-1. As a support for biogas reforming process, fly ash could enhance the activity of Ni catalyst with 96% and 97% of CO2 and CH4 conversions, respectively.

Abstract
As toxic metals, Hg and Cd are a concern for food safety and human health; their rapid and portable analysis is still a challenge. A portable and rapid Hg-Cd analyzer constructed from a metal-ceramic heater (MCH)-based electrothermal vaporizer (ETV), an on-line catalytic pyrolysis furnace (CPF), a composite Pt/Ni trap, and a homemade miniature atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) was proposed for grain analysis in this work. To enhance sensitivity, a new folded light path was designed for simultaneous Hg and Cd analysis using charge coupled device (CCD) in AAS. To eliminate the grain matrix interference, a catalytic pyrolysis furnace with aluminum oxide fillers was utilized to couple with a composite Pt/Ni trap. The method limits of detection (LODs) were 1.1 μg/kg and 0.3 μg/kg for Hg and Cd using a 20 mg grain sample, fulfilling the real sample analysis to monitor the grain contamination quickly; linearity R2 > 0.995 was reached only using standard solution calibration, indicating the sample was free of grain matrix interference. The favorable analytical accuracy and precision were validated by analyzing real and certified reference material (CRM) grains with recoveries of 97-103% and 96-111% for Hg and Cd, respectively. The total analysis time was less than 5 min without sample digestion or use of any chemicals, and the instrumental size and power consumption were <14 kg and 270 W, respectively. Compared with other rapid methods, this newly designed Hg-Cd analyzer is proven to be simple, portable, and robust and is, thus, suitable to quickly monitor Hg and Cd contamination in the field to protect grain and food safety.

In Situ Detection of Trace Heavy Metal Cu in Water by Atomic Emission Spectrometry of Nebulized Discharge Plasma at Atmospheric Pressure. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
The in situ detection of trace heavy metal is very important for human health and environmental protection. In this paper, a novel and stable nebulized discharge excited by an alternating current (AC) power supply at atmospheric pressure is employed to detect the trace metal copper by atomic emission spectrometry. Different from the previous experiments in which a conductive object was wrapped around a pneumatic nebulizer directly as a discharge electrode. Plasma is generated near needle electrodes and aerosol is introduced from above the electrode gap by a pneumatic nebulizer, which avoid damage to the fragile device. The effects of applied voltage, gas flow rate, pH value of liquid, and concentration of organic addition agents on the emission intensity of Cu I (3d104p-3d104s, 324.75 nm) are investigated for the purpose of optimizing the experiment conditions. For studying the discharge characteristics and understanding the mechanisms of metal atomic excitation, the waveforms of applied voltage and discharge current are measured, and the vibrational and rotational temperature are calculated by the spectra of N2 (C3∏u-B3∏g, Δυ = −2). In addition, gas temperature evolution of nebulized discharge is acquired and it is found that the emission intensity of Cu I (3d104p-3d104s, 324.75 nm) can be affected by applied voltage, gas flow rate, pH value of liquid, and concentration of organic addition agents. An optimized experimental condition of nebulized discharge for Cu detection is 3.59 of the pH, 5.6 kV of applied voltage, 1.68 L/min of Ar flow rate, and 2% of the ethanol. Under this condition, the limit of detection (LOD) of Cu can reach up to 0.083 mg/L.

Abstract
Modified aluminum scrap waste was used in the selective extraction of Hg(ii), and Cd(ii) ions. The aluminum scraps were modified with dibenzoylmethane, or isatoic anhydride, or 5-(2-chloroacetamide)-2-hydroxybenzoic acid. The modified aluminum sorbents were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, XRD, XPS, TGA, and elemental analysis. Modes of chelation between adsorbents and target metal ions were deduced via DFT. The highest adsorption capacity was observed for benzo-amino aluminum (BAA) toward Hg(ii), which reached 234.56 mg g-1, while other modified sorbents ranged from 135.28 mg g-1 to 229.3 mg g-1. Under the optimized conditions, the BAA adsorbent showed a lower limit of detection (1.1 mg L-1) and limit of quantification (3.66 mg L-1) for mercury ions than other sorbents. The prepared aluminum adsorbents also exhibited significant selectivities for Hg(ii) and Cd(ii) ions in the presence of competing metal ions.

Abstract
New selective and sensitive electrochemical sensors were designed based on the deposition of a promising ion imprinted polymer (IIP) on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the detection and monitoring of Cd(ii) in different real samples. Herein, a highly selective Cd-imprinted polymer was successfully synthesized using a novel heterocyclic compound based on the benzo[f]chromene scaffold that acted as a complexing agent and a functional monomer in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (initiator) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (cross-linker). The characterization of the synthesized chelating agent and IIP was performed using FT-IR, SEM, 1H-NMR, EIMS, and EDX analyses. After that, the voltammetric sensor was manufactured by introducing graphene oxide (GO) on the surface of GCE; then, the IIP was grown by a drop coating technique. The electrochemical characterization of the voltammetric sensor (IIP/GO@GCE) was performed by CV and EIS. For comparison, the potentiometric sensor was also prepared by embedding IIP in plasticized polyvinyl chloride and depositing it as one layer on the GCE surface. Anodic stripping voltammetry was used to construct the calibration graph; the IIP/GO@GCE exhibited a wider detection range (4.2 × 10-12-5.6 × 10-3 mol L-1) and extremely low detection limit (7 × 10-14 mol L-1) for Cd(ii). Meanwhile, the potentiometric sensor showed a linear calibration curve for Cd(ii) over a concentration range from 7.3 × 10-8 mol L-1 to 2.4 × 10-3 mol L-1 with a detection limit of 6.3 × 10-10 mol L-1. Furthermore, both sensors offered outstanding selectivity for Cd(ii) over a wide assortment of other common ions, high reproducibility, and excellent stability.

Abstract
In this study, a novel extraction and safety evaluation method for heavy metals based on different functions of plants was proposed, and an edible plant (pea) was used as the research material to explore the feasibility of the novel method. Pea sprouts were cultured in cadmium (Cd) concentrations of 0, 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 mg L-1, respectively. The Cd in pea sprouts was continuously extracted with 100 °C distilled water, 60% ethanol, 6% acetic acid, and simulated gastric juice. It was observed that highest amount of Cd (48.65-58.87%) was found in the extraction of roots with 6% acetic acid, followed by 100 °C distilled water (28.68-37.61%). While in stems, most of the Cd (70.73-85.39%) was extracted by 6% acetic acid. The recovery rate of the sequential chemical extraction technique employed in this experiment was between 93 and 106%. Compared with traditional methods, this study has its development potential in two aspects. First, it can determine which steps of sequential extractions of heavy metals in plants are the most harmful to humans. Secondly, corresponding measures can be taken to reduce heavy metals in vegetables used daily, such as soaking edible vegetables in vinegar for a short time. Novelty statement: In this study, a novel extraction and safety evaluation method for heavy metals based on different functions of plants was proposed, and an edible plant (pea) was used as the research material to explore the feasibility of the novel method. Compared with the commonly used extraction methods, the novel method is more reasonable and has greater development potential.

Abstract
A novel copper hydroxy phosphate@MOF composite DMP-Cu decorated by 2, 5-dimercapto-1, 3, 4-thiadiazol was facilely prepared and characterized. A dispersive SPE strategy using DMP-Cu as adsorbent combined with atomic fluorescence spectroscopy was developed for the selective capture of trace total mercury in rice sample. The adsorption mechanism showed that the Hg2+ removal process was fitted with pseudo second-order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption model. The adsorbent was easy to be regenerated and the maximum adsorption capacity for the removal of Hg2+ was 249.5 mg g-1 at the optimal pH of 4. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectra verified the selective and strong interaction between Hg2+ and thiol/nitrogen-containing functional groups of DMTZ on DMP-Cu. The trace total mercury in rice samples was determined with detection limit of 0.0125 ng mL-1 and relative standard deviation below 6%. The high recoveries were obtained in range of 98.8-109% for the spiked rice samples.
