Abstract
Patulin (PAT) commonly contaminates fruits, posing a significant risk to human health. Therefore, a highly effective and sensitive approach in identifying PAT is warranted. Herein, a SERS aptasensor was constructed based on a two-dimensional film-like structure. GO@Au nanosheets modified with SH-cDNA were employed as capture probes, while core-shell Au@Ag nanoparticles modified with 4-MBA and SH-Apt were utilized as signal probes. Through the interaction between capture probes and signal probes, adjustable hotspots were formed, yielding a significant Raman signal. During sensing, the GO@Au-cDNA competitively attached to Au@AgNPs@MBA-Apt, resulting in an inverse relationship between PAT levels and SERS intensity. The acquired results exhibited linear responses to PAT within the range of 1-70 ng/mL, with a calculated limit of detection of 0.46 ng/mL. In addition, the SERS aptasensor exhibited satisfactory recoveries in apple samples, which aligned closely with HPLC. With high sensitivity and specificity, this method holds significant potential for PAT detection.

Abstract
The importance of food quality and safety lies in ensuring the best product quality to meet consumer demands and public health. Advanced technologies play a crucial role in minimizing the risk of foodborne illnesses, contamination, drug residue, and other potential hazards in food. Significant materials and technological advancements have been made throughout the food supply chain. Among them, quantum dots (QDs), as a class of advanced nanomaterials with unique physicochemical properties, are progressively demonstrating their value in the field of food quality and safety. This review aims to explore cutting-edge research on the different applications of QDs in food quality and safety, including encapsulation of bioactive compounds, detection of food analytes, food preservation and packaging, and intelligent food freshness indicators. Moreover, the modification strategies and potential toxicities of diverse QDs are outlined, which can affect performance and hinder applications in the food industry. The findings suggested that QDs are mainly used in analyte detection and active/intelligent food packaging. Various food analytes can be detected using QD-based sensors, including heavy metal ions, pesticides, antibiotics, microorganisms, additives, and functional components. Moreover, QD incorporation aided in improving the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of film/coatings, resulting in extended shelf life for packaged food. Finally, the perspectives and critical challenges for the productivity, toxicity, and practical application of QDs are also summarized. By consolidating these essential aspects into this review, the way for developing high-performance QD-based nanomaterials is presented for researchers and food technologists to better capitalize upon this technology in food applications.

Abstract
Prolonged and excessive use of chlorpyrifos (CPS) has caused severe pollution, particularly in crops, vegetables, fruits, and water sources. As a result, CPS is detected in various food and water samples using conventional methods. However, its applications are limited due to size, portability, cost, etc. In this regard, electrochemical sensors are preferred for CPS detection due to their high sensitivity, reliability, rapid, on-site detection, and user-friendly. Notably, graphene-based electrochemical sensors have gained more attention due to their unique physiochemical and electrochemical properties. It shows high sensitivity, selectivity, and quick response because of its high surface area and high conductivity. In this review, we have discussed an overview of three graphene-based different functional electrochemical sensors such as electroanalytical sensors, bio-electrochemical sensors, and photoelectrochemical sensors used to detect CPS in food and water samples. Furthermore, the fabrication and operation of these electrochemical sensors using various materials (low band gap material, nanomaterials, enzymes, antibodies, DNA, aptamers, and so on) and electrochemical techniques (CV, DPV, EIS, SWV etc.) are discussed. The study found that the electrical signal was reduced with increasing CPS concentration. This is due to the blocking of active sites, reduced redox reaction, impedance, irreversible reactions, etc. In addition, acetylcholinesterase-coupled sensors are more sensitive and stable than others. Also, it can be further improved by fabricating with low band gap nanomaterials. Despite their advantages, these sensors have significant drawbacks, such as low reusability, repeatability, stability, and high cost. Therefore, further research is required to overcome such limitations.

Abstract
The rising threats to food security include several factors, such as population growth, low agricultural investment, and poor distribution systems. Consequently, food insecurity results from a confluence of issues, including diseases, processing limitations, and distribution deficiencies. Food insecurity usually occurs in vulnerable areas where certain technologies and traditional food safety testing are not a viable solution for foodborne disease detection. In this regard, 3D printing technologies and 3D printed sensors open the platform to produce portable, accurate, and low-cost sensors that address the gaps and challenges in food security. In this paper, we discuss the perspective role of 3D printed sensors in food security in terms of food safety and food quality monitoring to provide reliable access to nutritious, affordable food. In each section, we highlight the advantages of 3D printing technology in terms of cost-effectiveness, accuracy, accessibility, and reproducibility compared to traditional manufacturing methodologies. Recent developments in robotic technologies for mechanization, such as food handling with soft grippers, are also discussed. Lastly, we delve into the applications of advanced 3D printing technologies in agricultural monitoring, particularly the future of plant wearables, environmental sensing, and overall plant health monitoring.

Abstract
Fast and sensitive identification of foodborne bacteria in complex samples is the key to the prevention and control of microbial infections. Herein, an ultrasensitive lateral flow assay (LFIA) based on multilayered fluorescent nanofilm (GO/DQD)-guided signal amplification was developed for the rapid and quantitative determination of Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhi). The film-like GO/DQD was prepared through the electrostatic mediated layer-by-layer assembly of numerous carboxylated CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) onto an ultrathin graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet, which possessed advantages including higher QD loading, larger surface areas, superior luminescence, and better stability, than traditional spherical nanomaterials. The antibody-modified GO/DQD can effectively attach onto a target bacterial cell to form a GO/DQD-bacteria immunocomplex containing almost ten thousand QDs, thus greatly improving the detection sensitivity of LFIA. The constructed GO/DQD-LFIA biosensor achieved the rapid and sensitive detection of S. typhi in 14 min with detection limits of as low as 9 cells/mL. Moreover, compared with traditional LFIA techniques for bacteria detection, the proposed assay exhibited excellent stability and accuracy in real food samples and enormously improved sensitivity (2-3 orders of magnitude), demonstrating its great potential in the field of rapid diagnosis.

Abstract
Rapid and sensitive detection of multiple foodborne bacteria without DNA amplification is still challenging. Here, we proposed an immunochromatographic assay (ICA) with multiplex analysis ability and high sensitivity for direct detection of bacteria in real food samples, based on an improved surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing strategy. Multifunctional Au shell-coated graphene oxide nanosheets (GO@Au) were fabricated and for the first time introduced into the ICA system as a two-dimensional film-like SERS label, which possessed huge surface area, excellent stability, and superior SERS activity. Different from the conventional spherical nanotags, the antibody-conjugated GO@Au nanosheet effectively and rapidly adhered to bacterial cells, improved the dispersibility of bacteria-nanolabel complexes on the ICA strips, and provided numerous stable hotspots for SERS signal enhancement. The combination of GO@Au labels and the ICA system achieved the multiplex and ultrasensitive determination of three major foodborne pathogens, namely, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Salmonella typhimurium, in a single test, with low detection limits (8, 10, and 10 cells/mL) and short detection time (20 min). The proposed biosensor demonstrated high stability and good accuracy in various food samples and is thus a promising tool for the rapid identification of bacteria.

Abstract
Ultrasensitive determination of sorbic acid in food is essential for the assessment of the food quality. Therefore, two sensors based on nanographene decorated with gold nanoparticle paste modified with metal porphyrins (Zn protoporphyrin IX, and 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18 octaethyl, 21H, 23H-porphirine Mn(III) chloride) were proposed for the determination of sorbic acid in food (bakery products and mayonnaise). Square-wave voltammetry was used for the characterization and validation of the proposed sensors. Response characteristics showed that the limits of detection for both sensors were 0.33 µmol L-1 while the limits of quantification were 1.00 µmol L-1. Both sensors can be used for the determination of sorbic acid in the concentration range 1-1000 µmol L-1, the linear concentration range making them appropriate for the assay of sorbic acid in food. The highest sensitivity (0.35 nA/µmol L-1) was recorded when the sensor based on 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18 octaethyl, 21H, 23H-porphirine Mn(III) chloride was used, proving the higher electrocatalytic effect of this electrocatalyst versus the one of the Zn protoporphyrin IX. High recoveries (values higher than 95.00%) and low RSD (%) values (lower than 5.00%) were recorded for both sensors when used for the determination of sorbic acid in bread and mayonnaise, proving the high reliability of the proposed sensors and method.

Abstract
The sensing of food contaminants is essential to prevent their adverse health effects on the consumers. Electrochemical sensors are promising in the determination of electroactive analytes including food pollutants, biomolecules etc. Graphene nanomaterials offer many benefits as electrode material in a sensing device. To further improve the analytical performance, doped graphene or derivatives of graphene such as reduced graphene oxide and their nanocomposites were explored as electrode materials. Herein, the advancements in graphene and its derivatives-based electrochemical sensors for analysis of food pollutants were summarized. Determinations of both organic (food colourants, pesticides, drugs, etc.) and inorganic pollutants (metal cations and anions) were considered. The influencing factors including nature of electrode materials and food pollutants, pH, electroactive surface area etc., on the sensing performances of modified electrodes were highlighted. The results of pollutant detection in food samples by the graphene-based electrode have also been outlined. Lastly, conclusions and current challenges in effective real sample detection were presented.

Abstract
4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (vanillin) is a biophenol compound that is relatively abundant in the world’s most popular flavoring ingredient, natural vanilla. As a powerful antioxidant chemical with beneficial antimicrobial properties, vanillin is not only used as a flavoring agent in food, beverages, perfumery, and pharmaceutical products, it may also be employed as a food-preserving agent, and to fight against yeast and molds. The widespread use of vanilla in major industries warrants the need to develop simple and cost-effective strategies for the quantitative determination of its major component, vanillin. Herein, we explore the applications of a selective and sensitive electrochemical sensor (Au electrodeposited on a fluorine-doped reduced-graphene-oxide-modified glassy-carbon electrode (Au/F-rGO/GCE)) for the detection of vanillin. The electrochemical performance and analytical capabilities of this novel electrochemical sensor were investigated using electrochemical techniques including cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and reproducibility of the proposed electrochemical sensor may be attributed to the high conductivity and surface area of the formed nanocomposite. The high performance of the sensor developed in the present study was further demonstrated with real-sample analysis.

Abstract
The early diagnosis of diseases plays a vital role in healthcare and the extension of human life. Graphene-based biosensors have boosted the early diagnosis of diseases by detecting and monitoring related biomarkers, providing a better understanding of various physiological and pathological processes. They have generated tremendous interest, made significant advances, and offered promising application prospects. In this paper, we discuss the background of graphene and biosensors, including the properties and functionalization of graphene and biosensors. Second, the significant technologies adopted by biosensors are discussed, such as field-effect transistors and electrochemical and optical methods. Subsequently, we highlight biosensors for detecting various biomarkers, including ions, small molecules, macromolecules, viruses, bacteria, and living human cells. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of graphene-based biosensors and related broad research interests are discussed.

Abstract
For detection of cannabidiol (CBD)—an important ingredient in Cannabis sativa L.—amino magnetic nanoparticle-decorated graphene (Fe3O4-NH2-GN) was prepared in the form of nanocomposites, and then modified on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), resulting in a novel electrochemical sensor (Fe3O4-NH2-GN/GCE). The applied Fe3O4-NH2 nanoparticles and GN exhibited typical structures and intended surface groups through characterizations via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Raman spectroscopy. The Fe3O4-NH2-GN/GCE showed the maximum electrochemical signal for CBD during the comparison of fabricated components via the cyclic voltammetry method, and was systematically investigated in the composition and treatment of components, pH, scan rate, and quantitative analysis ability. Under optimal conditions, the Fe3O4-NH2-GN/GCE exhibited a good detection limit (0.04 μmol L−1) with a linear range of 0.1 μmol L−1 to 100 μmol L−1 (r2 = 0.984). In the detection of CBD in the extract of C. sativa leaves, the results of the electrochemical method using the Fe3O4-NH2-GN/GCE were in good agreement with those of the HPLC method. Based on these findings, the proposed sensor could be further developed for the portable and rapid detection of natural active compounds in the food, agricultural, and pharmaceutical fields.

Abstract
Intensive conventional agriculture and climate change have induced severe ecological damages and threatened global food security, claiming a reorientation of agricultural management and public policies towards a more sustainable development model. In this context, nanomaterials promise to support this transition by promoting mitigation, enhancing productivity, and reducing contamination. This review gathers recent research innovations on smart nanoformulations and delivery systems improving crop protection and plant nutrition, nanoremediation strategies for contaminated soils, nanosensors for plant health and food quality and safety monitoring, and nanomaterials as smart food-packaging. It also highlights the impact of engineered nanomaterials on soil microbial communities, and potential environmental risks, along with future research directions. Although large-scale production and in-field testing of nano-agrochemicals are still ongoing, the collected information indicates improvements in uptake, use efficiency, targeted delivery of the active ingredients, and reduction of leaching and pollution. Nanoremediation seems to have a low negative impact on microbial communities while promoting biodiversity. Nanosensors enable high-resolution crop monitoring and sustainable management of the resources, while nano-packaging confers catalytic, antimicrobial, and barrier properties, preserving food safety and preventing food waste. Though, the application of nanomaterials to the agri-food sector requires a specific risk assessment supporting proper regulations and public acceptance.
