Abstract
Chitosan films containing cinnamon essential oil Pickering emulsions (CEO-PEs) stabilized by methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride esterified corn starch (MeCS) were prepared and characterized. The incorporation of CEO-PEs was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The cinnamon essential oil content affected the color of film significantly (p < 0.05), with higher concentrations resulting in a higher yellowness value. The films containing CEO-PEs had lower transparency and water vapor permeability. The antimicrobial activity of films against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was enhanced by incorporating CEO-PEs. When used for pork preservation, the films containing CEO-PEs were more effective in limiting lipid oxidation, proteins decomposition, as well as total microbial growth. All these effects were proportional to the cinnamon essential oil content in the films. These results suggested that chitosan/MeCS-stablized CEO-PEs composite film have great potential in pork packaging.

Abstract
Fresh trays could not provide efficient protection and detection to the fresh foods during the transportation and sale processes due to its less functions. To address these challenges, one type of multifunctional fresh tray with antibacterial and detection properties was fabricated by the combining of two types of functionalized polylactic acid (PLA) aerogels, PLA/carvacrol (PLA/CA) aerogel and PLA-red cabbage anthocyanin (PLA-RCA) aerogel. The PLA/CA aerogel prepared by in situ encapsulation strategy exhibits a strong antioxidant effect with the free radical clearance rate of 69.57 % at 12 h, and a significant inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli due to the existence of CA. The PLA- RCA aerogel prepared via the solute self-assembly strategy demonstrates a detection property due to the existence of RCA. Meanwhile, the microfiber structure of PLA aerogel provided more reaction sites for RCA which results in a fast response to ammonia in 5 s. Therefore, the novel fresh tray could not only extend the shelf life of food but also monitor the status of food in real time. Overall, the preparation of the novel fresh tray by the functionalization of PLA aerogel can provide a feasible solution for the storage and detection of fresh food.

Abstract
In this work, three bis-pyrrolidone-based structures (BP) were synthesized combining dimethyl itaconate (DMI), the dimethyl ester derivative of itaconic acid, with various aliphatic diamines having a C4 to C12 carbon chain length with the aim of developing novel bio-based building blocks. All three BPs were obtained with a purity >93% and could further be used without performing any tedious purification step, therefore allowing an easy scalability of the synthesis on a 10 g scale. Their potential application was demonstrated in two key areas of modern polymer science: (1) the enzymatic synthesis of polyesters and (2) their use as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) additives. Firstly, the possibility of obtaining oligoesters by reacting the BP monomers with various aliphatic diols in a solventless reaction system and under mild conditions (T < 90 °C) was demonstrated thanks to the use of enzymatic catalysis. Linear oligoesters having mean average molecular weights between 1000 g mol-1 and 6100 g mol-1 and dispersity values <2 were successfully obtained. When applying the BP structures as PLA additives, the incorporation of a 10% w w-1 BP in the polyester matrix resulted in systems with an 8× increased elongation at break and a decrease in the glass transition temperature compared to the neat polymer matrix.

Abstract
Microbial contamination is the leading cause of food spoilage and food-borne disease. Here, we developed a multifunctional surface based on polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastic with antifouling and antibacterial properties via a facile dual-coating approach. The surface was designed with hierarchical micro/nano-scale roughness and low surface energy. Bactericidal agent polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMG) was incorporated to endow the film with bactericidal activity. The film had good superhydrophobic, antifouling and antibacterial performance, with a water contact angle of 154.3°, antibacterial efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus of 99.9 % and 99.6 %, respectively, and biofilm inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus of 63.5 % and 68.9 %, respectively. Synergistic effects of antibacterial adhesion and contact killing of bacteria contributed to the significant antibacterial performance of the film. The biobased biodegradable film was highly effective in preventing microbial growth when applied as antibacterial food packaging for poultry product, extending the shelf life of fresh chicken breast up to eight days.

Abstract
The retention capacity of polymers is related to the development of systems that combine high surface-to-volume ratio with good handling and specific functionality. Biodegradability and biocompatibility are also key features for extending the field of applications to areas such as biomedicine. With this in mind, the aim of this work is to develop biodegradable, biocompatible, and highly functionalized porous films, that ensure suitable handling and a good surface-to-volume ratio. Polylactic acid (PLA) is applied as a polymer matrix to which a polycaprolactone with a star-shaped architecture (PCL-COOH) to ensure a high concentration of carboxylic end functionalities is added. The porous films are prepared using the phase inversion technique, which, as shown by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, promotes good dispersion of the PCL-COOH domains. Absorption and release measurements performed with a positively charged model molecule show that the retention capacity and release rate can be tuned by changing the PCL-COOH concentration in the systems. Moreover, the adsorption properties for the formulation with the highest PCL-COOH content are also demonstrated with a real and widely used drug, namely doxorubicin. Finally, the bio- and hemocompatibility of the films, which are enzymatically degradable, are evaluated by using human keratinocytes and red blood cells, respectively.

Abstract
To improve the functions of Pleurotus ostreatus polysaccharide (POP), POP-EGCG conjugates were prepared using free radical graft polymerization reactions and were characterized using UV-vis, FT-IR, SEM, XRD, DSC, TG, particle size and potential, three-phase contact angle, and rheological tests; The antioxidant and antibacterial ability in vitro were detected. Moreover, effects of POP-EGCG on the quality of refrigerated minced pork were investigated. The results showed the optimal preparation conditions of POP-EGCG were 1 % POP, 1.3 % EGCG, 0.25 % Vc, 16 % concentration of H2O2, and reaction 17 h. The POP-EGCG showed the characteristic peak of EGCG and was a mesh honeycomb with rough and porous surface; It had higher crystallinity, increased particle size, but decreased thermal stability, solubility, and viscosity, and significantly enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial ability. The POP-EGCG effectively improved the sensory quality and inhibited lipid oxidation of chilled minced pork, and extended the shelf life of minced pork up to 9 days at 4 °C. Specifically, the TVB-N and TBARS of minced pork in the POP-EGCG group were respectively 14.93 mg/100 g and 0.9 mg MDA/kg, which were lower than the spoilage thresholds in the national standard. This study provides a theoretical basis for further development of natural antioxidants and antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
For the first time, ultrafiltration (UF) green membranes were prepared through a sustainable route by using PLA as a biopolymer and dihydrolevoclucosenone, whose trade name is Cyrene™ (Cyr), dimethyl isosorbide (DMI), and ethyl lactate (EL) as biobased solvents. The influence of physical-chemical properties of the solvent on the final membrane morphology and performance was evaluated. The variation of polymer concentration in the casting solution, as well as the presence of Pluronic® (Plu) as a pore former agent, were assessed as well. The obtained results highlighted that the final morphology of a membrane was strictly connected with the interplaying of thermodynamic factors as well as kinetic ones, primarily dope solution viscosity. The pore size of the resulting PLA membranes ranged from 0.02 to 0.09 μm. Membrane thickness and porosity varied in the range of 0.090-0.133 mm of 75-87%, respectively, and DMI led to the most porous membranes. The addition of Plu to the casting solution showed a beneficial effect on the membrane contact angle, allowing the formation of hydrophilic membranes (contact angle < 90°), and promoted the increase of pore size as well as the reduction of membrane crystallinity. PLA membranes were tested for pure water permeability (10-390 L/m2 h bar).

Abstract
Porous membrane technology has garnered significant attention in the fields of separation and biology due to its remarkable contributions to green chemistry and sustainable development. The porous membranes fabricated from polylactic acid (PLA) possess numerous advantages, including a low relative density, a high specific surface area, biodegradability, and excellent biocompatibility. As a result, they exhibit promising prospects for various applications, such as oil-water separation, tissue engineering, and drug release. This paper provides an overview of recent research advancements in the fabrication of PLA membranes using electrospinning, the breath-figure method, and the phase separation method. Firstly, the principles of each method are elucidated from the perspective of pore formation. The correlation between the relevant parameters and pore structure is discussed and summarized, subsequently followed by a comparative analysis of the advantages and limitations of each method. Subsequently, this article presents the diverse applications of porous PLA membranes in tissue engineering, oil-water separation, and other fields. The current challenges faced by these membranes, however, encompass inadequate mechanical strength, limited production efficiency, and the complexity of pore structure control. Suggestions for enhancement, as well as future prospects, are provided accordingly.

Abstract
In future, global demand for low-cost-sustainable materials possessing good strength is going to increase tremendously, to replace synthetic plastic materials, thus motivating scientists towards green composites. The PLA has been the most promising sustainable bio composites, due to its inherent antibacterial property, biodegradability, eco-friendliness, and good thermal and mechanical characteristics. However, PLA has certain demerits such as poor water and gas barrier properties, and low glass transition temperature, which restricts its use in food packaging applications. To overcome this, PLA is blended with polysaccharides such as gum and cellulose to enhance the water barrier, thermal, crystallization, degradability, and mechanical properties. Moreover, the addition of these polysaccharides not only reduces the production cost but also helps in manufacturing packaging material with superior quality. Hence this review focuses on various fabrication techniques, degradation of the ternary composite, and its application in the food sector. Moreover, this review discusses the enhanced barrier and mechanical properties of the ternary blend packaging material. Incorporation of gum enhanced flexibility, while the reinforcement of cellulose improved the structural integrity of the ternary composite. The unique properties of this ternary composite make it suitable for extending the shelf life of food packaging, specifically for fruits, vegetables, and fried products. Future studies must be conducted to investigate the optimization of formulations for specific food types, explore scalability for industrial applications, and integrate these composites with emerging technologies (3D/4D printing).

Abstract
This study investigates the influence of citric acid concentration on the fabrication of porous cellulose acetate (CA) membranes using the Non-Solvent Induced Phase Separation (NIPS) method. A notable aspect is the precise control over membrane properties, particularly pore size and porosity, achieved solely through the adjustment of citric acid concentration, serving as the additive. Higher concentrations of citric acid increase pore size by rendering polymer chains more pliable, whereas lower concentrations lead to smaller, denser pores due to improved dispersion in the CA matrix and altered water interactions during phase separation. A decrease in porosity and Gurley values with reducing citric acid concentrations (from 5 × 10-2 to 1 × 10-3 M ratios) indicates less plasticization of CA chains. However, at very low concentrations (1 × 10-4 and 1 × 10-5), porosity increases, despite the presence of smaller pores, and Gurley values approach those of pure CA in terms of gas permeability. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy confirms the presence of citric acid and its interaction with carbonyl groups, consistent with the pore size observations from Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Spectral data deconvolution reveals weakened carbonyl bonds due to the reduced presence of citric acid, correlating with the smaller pores observed in SEM. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) demonstrates that composite membranes are more thermally stable than pure CA, attributed to the citric acid-induced crosslinking within the polymer chains. Stability increases with decreasing citric acid concentration, with some anomalies at the lowest levels. In conclusion, this study highlights the capability of adjusting citric acid concentration to tailor membrane properties, offering valuable insights for the creation of porous materials across diverse industrial applications.

Abstract
New ways of recycling fly ash are of great significance for reducing the environmental pollution. In this work, biodegradable hydrophobic poly (L-lactic acid)/fly ash composites for anti-icing application were successfully fabricated via a facile solvent-volatilization-induced phase separation approach. A silane coupling agent of 3-(Trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate was used to decorate a fly ash surface (FA@KH570) for strengthening the interface bonding between fly ash and poly (L-lactic acid). Moreover, FA@KH570 could obviously enhance the crystallinity of poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA)/FA@KH570 composites, which accelerated the conversion from the liquid-liquid to the liquid-solid phase separation principle. Correspondingly, the controllable surface morphology from smooth to petal-like microspheres was attained simply by adjusting the FA@KH570 content. After coating nontoxic candle grease, the apparent contact angle of 5 wt% PLLA/FA@KH570 composite was significantly increased to an astonishing 151.2°, which endowed the composite with excellent anti-icing property. This strategy paves the way for recycling waste fly ash and manufacturing hydrophobic poly (L-lactic acid) composite for potential application as an anti-icing material for refrigerator interior walls.

Abstract
In this study, amphiphilic chitosan (NPCS-CA) was synthesized by grafting quaternary phosphonium salt and cholic acid onto the chain of chitosan, aiming to develop an active edible film based on NPCS-CA and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) incorporated with cinnamon essential oil (CEO) by the casting method. The chemical structure of the chitosan derivative was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and XRD. Through the characterization of FT-IR, TGA, mechanical and barrier properties of the composite films, the optimal proportion of NPCS-CA/PVA was determined as 5/5. And, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the NPCS-CA/PVA (5/5) film with 0.4 % CEO were 20.32 MPa and 65.73 %, respectively. The results revealed that the NPCS-CA/PVA-CEO composite films exhibited an excellent ultraviolet barrier property at 200-300 nm and significantly reduced oxygen permeability, carbon dioxide permeability and water vapor permeability. Furthermore, the antibacterial property of film-forming solutions against E. coli, S. aureus, and C. lagenarium was distinctly improved with the increase of NPCS-CA/PVA proportion. And, the multifunctional films effectively extended the shelf-life of mangoes at 25 °C based on the characterization of surface changes and quality indexes. The NPCS-CA/PVA-CEO films could be developed as biocomposite food packaging material.

Abstract
In this paper, HACC modified with (5-Carboxypentyl) (triphenyl) phosphonium bromide (HA-CS-NP) was synthesized. Then, a multifunctional food packaging composite film with good thermal stability and antibacterial functions was fabricated by HA-CS-NP and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The tensile strength and elongation at break of HA-CS-NP/PVA composite film at the weight ratio of 3/7 were 20.32 ± 1.02 MPa and 65.73 ± 3.29%, respectively. And, the inhibition rates of HA-CS-NP (0.5%) on Mango C. lagenarium and Papaya C. gloeosporioides on day 6 were up to 80.92 ± 4.12%. Compared with CK group, the weight loss of experimental groups were 23.96 ± 2.46 g/206 ± 7.25 g (mangoes) and 59.45 ± 3.06 g/496 ± 6.37 g (papaya), reduced by 35.76 ± 1.15%. Moreover, the final hardness value of the fruits coated with composite films was 4.94 ± 0.23 kg/cm3 and increased by 20.79 ± 1.04%, and the rot index was reduced by 71.43 ± 3.24%. The multifunctional HA-CS-NP/PVA coating has broad prospects in the application of food packaging.
