Abstract
This umbrella review of randomized clinical trials aims to provide a unique and detailed understanding of curcumin's effects on adipokines, adding a novel perspective to the existing body of research. We carried out a thorough search of international databases up to April 2024, including MEDLINE, SciVerse Scopus, and Clarivate Analytics Web of Science. A random-effects model was utilized to evaluate the impact of curcuminoid on adipokines. The umbrella review incorporated meta-analyses that examined the effects of curcuminoid supplementation on adipokines, presenting associated effect sizes (ES) and confidence intervals (CI). We applied the GRADE and AMSTAR (A Tool for Assessing the Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews system) to assess the certainty of the evidence and the quality of the systematic reviews. Our analysis of one meta-analysis, including 14 RCTs plus 1 RCT not included in meta-analyses, revealed significant and impactful findings. We found a substantial increase in serum adiponectin levels with curcuminoid supplementation, indicating a positive effect (SMD: 0.9; 95% CI, 0.4 to 1.3, p < 0.001; I2 = 92.2%). However, we did not observe a significant impact on serum leptin. The GRADE assessment supports the effect of curcuminoids on adiponectin with moderate evidence, while the impact on leptin was supported by low evidence. Curcuminoid supplementation significantly increases serum adiponectin levels with moderate-quality evidence and has no significant impact on serum leptin. This provides evidence as to the safety and effectiveness of curcuminoids in enhancing adiponectin without adverse effects, reassuring the audience about their potential in adipokine research.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the primary polyphenol in green tea, is renowned for its potent antioxidant properties. EGCG interacts with various cellular targets, inhibiting cancer cell proliferation through apoptosis and cell cycle arrest induction, while also modulating metabolic pathways. Studies have demonstrated its potential in addressing cancer development, obesity, and diabetes. Given the rising prevalence of metabolic diseases and cancers, EGCG is increasingly recognized as a promising therapeutic agent. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest findings on the effects of both free and nano-encapsulated EGCG on mechanisms involved in the management and prevention of hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. The review highlights EGCG role in modulating key signaling pathways, enhancing bioavailability through nano-formulations, and its potential applications in clinical settings.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TPP) are key contributors to the beneficial health effects of green tea and black tea. However, their molecular mechanisms of action remain unclear. This article discusses the importance of the bioavailability of TPP in understanding their mechanisms of action and health effects of tea consumption. The systemic bioavailability is rather high for smaller catechins, low for galloyl catechins, and very low or null for oligomers and polymers from black tea. The bioavailability of TPP oxidation-derived polymers and self-assembled nanomaterials is not clearly known. If the large molecular weight TPP cannot get into systemic circulation, then the biological activities and mechanisms of action derived from studies in vitro are unlikely to be relevant to their actions in internal organs in vivo. In that case, their interactions with microbiota and actions on the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract are important to their health effects. Therefore, the bioavailability of different types of TPP is an important factor in determining their mechanisms of action and the health effects of tea consumption.

Abstract
Liubao tea, a traditional dark tea, has gained widespread recognition for various health benefits. In this study, the effects of Liubao tea extract (LTE) on obesity-related hyperlipidemia and the potential mechanism involved were explored. Anti-obesity compounds such as tricetin, isovitexin, tiliroside, etc. in LTE were identified. In high-fat diet mouse models, LTE effectively reduced tissues, organs, and body weight growth, and restored abnormal serum lipid levels. LTE could reverse adipocyte enlargement, lipid accumulation, and hepatic microstructure abnormalities. Notably, LTE reshaped gut microbiota by boosting beneficial bacteria (e.g., Bacteroides, Akkermansia, Psychrobacter) and suppressing harmful bacteria (e.g., Dubosiella, Faecalibaculum). Spearman correlation analysis unveiled significant associations between serum lipid levels, weight gain, LTE dosage, and gut microbiota, underlining the modulatory effects of LTE on metabolic disorders via the regulation of intestinal microbiota. Collectively, LTE could serve as a potential therapy for obesity-related hyperlipidemia prevention.

Abstract
Background Obesity and high fasting blood glucose (FBG) resulting from high-fat diets (HFDs) have emerged as significant public health concerns, garnering increasing attention. Recently, gut microbiota has been linked with metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and its mediating role in dietary supplements has been confirmed. Seeking various dietary supplements to lose body weight (BW) and decrease FBG and explaining the underlying mechanism have become the research hotspots in T2DM studies. Methods In this study, rutin and proanthocyanidins (PA) were selected as dietary supplements (200 mg/kg × day, oral gavage, 6 weeks) in T2DM mice induced with HFD to assess their efficacy in weight loss, FBG reduction, gut microbiota alterations, and the associated underlying mechanisms. Results Our findings indicate that rutin was more effective than PA in relieving inflammation and fat hypertrophy, although both significantly reduced BW and FBG within 2 weeks after the intervention. Analysis of 16S rRNA amplicons revealed substantial alterations in the gut microbial community composition of mice administered with PA and rutin compared to HFD-fed mice. Importantly, several core microbes, particularly a series of probiotics, such as Akkermansia, Lactococcus, Odoribacter, Faecalibaculum, and Roseburia were identified, which were significantly correlated with the changes in BW and FBG. Conclusion Overall, our study highlights that rutin and PA can reduce BW, FBG, and inflammation by modulating the gut microbiota composition, providing novel perspectives for managing and treating weight and FBG concerns in obesity and T2DM patients through dietary supplements in clinical treatment.

Abstract
Hyperlipidemia is a metabolic disorder resulted from unhealthy dietary and lifestyle habits. Its pathogenesis is possibly linked to gut microbiota dysbiosis. This study investigates the preventive effects of chitosan self-assembled coconut residue dietary fiber (CRFSC) on hyperlipidemia induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) and gut microbiota. CRFSC resulted in a significant weight loss of 7.9% in HFD rats and had a preventive effect on all four lipid parameter abnormalities. HFD supplemented with oat group resulted in a weight loss of 3.8% in HFD rats and had no preventive effect on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) abnormalities. Prevention was achieved not only through the modulation of gut microbiota composition and the increase of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) levels, but also through the activation of superoxide dismutase enzyme and the inhibition of malondialdehyde accumulation, all of which are the factors leading to the controlling of lipid abnormalities and oxidative damage. The prevention of lipid parameters by chitosan self-assembled coconut residue dietary fiber (CRFSC) may be attributed to its richness in chitosan and insoluble dietary fiber, as well as its ability to enrich beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia, Roseburia, and Ruminococcus. Correlation analysis demonstrated that key bacterial species producing SCFAs, which are rich in the CRFSC diet, had a positive impact on controlling hyperlipidemia. Hence, consumption of a CRFSC diet could serve as an effective strategy for preventing and controlling the development of hyperlipidemia due to its potential ability to regulate gut microbiota and SCFAs. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study showed that dietary fiber from coconut residue after chitosan self-assembly had preventive effects on overweight, dyslipidemia, and oxidative damage in rats. In addition, CRFSC also increased the content of short-chain fatty acids in the gut. And improve gut health by affecting gut microbiota. This finding suggests that CRFSC can be used as a dietary strategy to prevent hyperlipidemia and has practical significance in developing new healthy foods.

Abstract
α-Glucosidase is considered to be one of the effective targets for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This study examined the inhibitory mechanisms of eight catechins on α-glucosidase, including both the free forms (C, EC, GC, EGC) and esterified forms (CG, ECG, GCG, EGCG). Enzyme kinetics and molecular docking studies demonstrated that catechins primarily inhibit α-glucosidase by binding through hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions, with esterified catechins exhibiting stronger inhibitory effects. The structural changes of the proteins following binding were further explored using fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that catechins altered the microenvironment around the fluorescent amino acids within the enzyme (such as tyrosine and tryptophan), resulting in slight unfolding of the protein structure. AFM further confirmed that catechin binding to α-glucosidase induced protein aggregation, with esterified catechins exhibiting a more pronounced effect. All of the above findings were based on static model studies. Moreover, the binding kinetics of catechins with α-glucosidase were innovatively investigated using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), revealing that esterified catechins bound more rapidly and displayed higher affinity. The presence of the gallate group in esterified catechins was identified as crucial for their binding to α-glucosidase, resulting in a more significant inhibitory effect. These findings suggested that dietary intake of catechins, especially esterified form, may more effectively inhibit the activity of α-glucosidase.

Abstract
Hyperlipidemia, characterized by an abnormal lipid metabolism, is related to multiple cardiovascular diseases that pose challenges to global public health. Macadamia oil (MO), rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (around 80%), is regarded as a functional oil used to regulate lipid accumulation. Nonetheless, the lipid-lowering mechanism of MO is still unknown. Therefore, the lipid-lowering effects of MO in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemic mice were evaluated in this study. The results revealed that MO could effectively reduce body weight and the organ index and improve serum lipid levels by reducing total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and elevating high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Additionally, MO supplementation could improve abnormal liver function caused by hyperlipemia, characterized by decreased liver enzyme levels, including alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase. Meanwhile, MO also exhibited an inhibitory effect on oxidative stress and lipid accumulation caused by an HFD. Moreover, findings from qRT-PCR and Western blotting analyses suggest that MO supplementation markedly prevented hyperlipidemia by inhibiting the expression of AMPK pathway-related genes, SREBP-1c, FAS, ACC, and PPAR-γ, as well as upregulating the levels of Nrf2, HO-1, and γ-GCS. These results indicate that MO attenuates lipid accumulation in vivo via AMPK/Nrf2 pathway activation, suggesting that MO could serve as a dietary supplementation or medication for treating hyperlipidemia.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has demonstrated potential effects on obesity-induced precocious puberty, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Female mice were randomly assigned into control (CON), EGCG-treated (EGCG), high-fat diet (HFD), and HFD with EGCG treatment (HFDEGCG) groups. Key measurements included body weight, vaginal opening time, and serum sex hormone levels. The gut microbiota was analyzed through 16S rRNA sequencing, fecal metabolites were assessed via metabolomics, and the hypothalamic transcriptome was examined using RNA sequencing. EGCG mitigated weight gain and delayed vaginal opening in mice with obesity-induced precocious puberty. Additionally, it reduced serum estradiol levels and decreased the number of mature ovarian follicles in the HFDEGCG group compared to the HFD group. EGCG treatment partially reversed HFD-induced dysbiosis by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia. Metabolomic analysis revealed significant alterations in tryptophan metabolism, while transcriptome analysis identified genes involved in metabolic pathways. Correlation analyses underscored the importance of the gut-brain axis in mediating EGCG's effects. Overall, EGCG prevents obesity-induced precocious puberty by modulating the gut microbiota, altering metabolic pathways, and regulating hypothalamic gene expression.

Abstract
Green tea polyphenols (GTP) have been shown to ameliorate lipid metabolic disorders by regulating intestinal bacteria. Given the significant role of intestinal bacteriophages in shaping the gut microbiota, this study investigates GTP's influence on gut bacteriophage-bacteria interactions and lipid metabolism using metagenomics and metabonomics. The research results indicated that GTP significantly reduced body weight, serum triglycerides, leptin, insulin resistance, interleukin-6, and TNF-α levels while increasing adiponectin in ob/ob mice fed high-fat diet, aiding intestinal repair. GTP improved gut health by decreasing Enterobacter, Siphoviridae and Enterobacteria_phage_sfv, increasing Bifidobacterium and intestinal metabolites SCFA and hippuric acid. Correlation analysis showed negative correlations between Enterobacter sp. 50,588,862 and Enterobacteria_phages, Shigella_phages with 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate and hippuric acid. Bifidobacterium choerinum and Bifidobacterium sp. AGR2158 were positively correlated with fatty acids and bile acids. In conclusion, GTP reduced fat accumulation and inflammation, enhanced gut barrier function in obese mice, closely associated with changes in the gut bacteriophage community.

Abstract
This study investigated the impact of tea polyphenols on serum indices, rumen microorganisms, rumen metabolism, and liver metabolism in Hu sheep. Sixty healthy lambs, aged three months and with similar average weights, were chosen and randomly assigned to control (CON), TP400, TP800, and TP1200 groups, each consisting of fifteen lambs. The control group received a basal diet, while the experimental groups were provided with basal diet supplemented with 400 mg/kg, 800 mg/kg, and 1200 mg/kg of tea polyphenols, respectively. Compared with the CON group, the addition of tea polyphenols to the diet significantly increased serum IgA, GSH-Px, and TSOD. In addition, tea polyphenols were able to increase rumen pH but had no significant effect on the rumen NH3-N, VFA molar content, and the microbial top 10 phylum and genus levels. Moreover, Firmicutes predominated in the network map of the top 80 abundant microorganisms at the genus level, identifying 13 biomarkers at the genus level. In addition, strong correlations were observed between liver and rumen metabolites, particularly between rumen succinic acid and liver alanyl-serine and methylmalonic acid. Furthermore, tea polyphenol additions changed the enrichment of liver and rumen metabolites in the top five KEGG metabolic pathways, but 400-1200 mg/kg additions had no negative impact on the liver and rumen. In summary, TP significantly influences rumen and liver metabolites in Hu sheep, enhancing lamb immunity and antioxidant capacity, with 400 mg/kg being the most effective dosage.

Abstract
Polyphenols in mulberry fruit have potential anti-diabetic effects by targeting the gut microbiota. This study investigated how mulberry polyphenols (MPs) influence the microbiota of the small and large intestines and their effects on type 2 diabetes symptoms. The results showed lower microbiota densities in the small intestine. MP treatments improved microbiota richness and diversity in both intestines, similar to metformin. In particular, at a 400 mg kg-1 dose, mulberry polyphenols decreased Firmicutes, Lactobacillus, and Bacilli, while increasing Bacteroidetes, leading to elevated propionate and butyrate levels. Less abundant small intestinal microbiota, like Enterobacterales, Mycoplasmatales, Enterobacteriaceae, and Ureaplasma, were involved in regulating blood glucose and insulin levels. Functional analysis suggested that mulberry polyphenols reshaped the small intestinal microbiota to influence blood glucose balance via unknown pathways, while in the large intestine, they primarily affected blood glucose through carbohydrate transport and metabolism. Based on their ability to regulate the composition of intestinal flora, MPs likely improved glucose homeostasis by enhancing glucose utilization, supporting pancreatic tissue health, and increasing serum antioxidant capacity. However, the specific mechanisms underlying this potential are yet to be fully explored. This study provides new insights into the influence of MPs on remodeling the microbiota residing in both the small and large intestines, which thereby may contribute to the improvement of the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represent chronic inflammatory respiratory disorders that, despite having distinct pathophysiological underpinnings, both feature airflow obstruction and respiratory symptoms. A critical component in the pathogenesis of each condition is the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), a multifunctional cytokine that exerts varying influences across these diseases. In asthma, TGF-β is significantly involved in airway remodeling, a key aspect marked by subepithelial fibrosis, hypertrophy of the smooth muscle, enhanced mucus production, and suppression of emphysema development. The cytokine facilitates collagen deposition and the proliferation of fibroblasts, which are crucial in the structural modifications within the airways. In contrast, the role of TGF-β in COPD is more ambiguous. It initially acts as a protective agent, fostering tissue repair and curbing inflammation. However, prolonged exposure to environmental factors such as cigarette smoke causes TGF-β signaling malfunction. Such dysregulation leads to abnormal tissue remodeling, marked by excessive collagen deposition, enlargement of airspaces, and, thus, accelerated development of emphysema. Additionally, TGF-β facilitates the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process contributing to the phenotypic alterations observed in COPD. A thorough comprehension of the multifaceted role of TGF-β in asthma and COPD is imperative for elaborating precise therapeutic interventions. We review several promising approaches that alter TGF-β signaling. Nevertheless, additional studies are essential to delineate further the specific mechanisms of TGF-β dysregulation and its potential therapeutic impacts in these chronic respiratory diseases.

Abstract
Type 3 resistant starch from Canna edulis (Ce-RS3) is an insoluble dietary fiber which could improve blood lipids in animals, but clinically robust evidence is still lacking. We performed a double-blind randomized controlled trial to assess the effects of Ce-RS3 on lipids in mild hyperlipidemia. One hundred and fifteen patients were included followed the recruitment criteria, and were randomly allocated to receive Ce-RS3 or placebo (native starch from Canna edulis) for 12 weeks (20 g/day). In addition to serum lipids, complete blood counts, serum inflammatory factors, antioxidant indexes, and dietary survey, 16 S rRNA sequencing technique was utilized to analyze the gut microbiota alterations. Targeted quantitative metabolomics (TQM) was used to detect metabolite changes. Compared with the placebo, Ce- RS3 significantly decreased levels of total cholesterol, lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and increased the glutathione peroxidase. Based on the 16 S rRNA sequencing, TQM, the correlation analysis, as well as the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes (KEGG) and Genomes and Human Metabolome Database (HMDB) analysis, we found that Ce-RS3 could increase the abundances of genera Faecalibacterium and Agathobacter, while reduce the abundances of genera norank_f_Ruminococcaceae and Christensenellaceae_R-7_ group to regulate phenylalanine metabolism, which could reduce the fatty acid biosynthesis and fatty acid elongation in the mitochondria to lower blood lipids. Conclusively, we firstly confirmed the feasibility of Ce-RS3 for clinical application, which presents a novel, effective therapy for the mild hyperlipidemia. (Chictr. org. cn. Abstract
This work was to investigate the effect of four prebiotic saccharides gum arabic (GA), fructooligosaccharide (FOS), konjac glucomannan (KGM), and inulin (INU) incorporation on the encapsulation efficiency (EE), physicochemical stability, and in vitro digestion of urolithin A-loaded liposomes (UroA-LPs). The regulation of liposomes on gut microbiota was also investigated by in vitro colonic fermentation. Results indicated that liposomes coated with GA showed the best EE, bioaccessibility, storage and thermal stability, the bioaccessibility was 1.67 times of that of UroA-LPs. The UroA-LPs coated with FOS showed the best freeze-thaw stability and transformation. Meanwhile, saccharides addition remarkably improved the relative abundance of Bacteroidota, reduced the abundances of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. The UroA-LPs coated with FOS, INU, and GA exhibited the highest beneficial bacteria abundance of Parabacteroides, Monoglobus, and Phascolarctobacterium, respectively. FOS could also decrease the abundance of harmful bacteria Collinsella and Enterococcus, and increase the levels of acetic acid, butyric acid and iso-butyric acid. Consequently, prebiotic saccharides can improve the EE, physicochemical stability, gut microbiota regulation of UroA-LPs, and promote the bioaccessibility of UroA, but the efficiency varied based on saccharides types, which can lay a foundation for the application of UroA in foods industry and for the enhancement of its bio-activities.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review delves into the complex interplay between obesity-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis and the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), highlighting the potential of natural products in mitigating these effects. By integrating recent epidemiological data, we aim to provide a nuanced understanding of how obesity exacerbates T2DM through gut flora alterations. RECENT FINDINGS Advances in research have underscored the significance of bioactive ingredients in natural foods, capable of restoring gut microbiota balance, thus offering a promising approach to manage diabetes in the context of obesity. These findings build upon the traditional use of medicinal plants in diabetes treatment, suggesting a deeper exploration of their mechanisms of action. This comprehensive manuscript underscores the critical role of targeting gut microbiota dysbiosis in obesity-related T2DM management and by bridging traditional knowledge with current scientific evidence; we highlighted the need for continued research into natural products as a complementary strategy for comprehensive diabetes care.

Abstract
Introduction Germinated brown rice is a functional food with a promising potential for alleviating metabolic diseases. This study aimed to explore the hypolipidemic effects of autoclaving-treated germinated brown rice (AGBR) and the underlying mechanisms involving gut microbiota. Methods Dietary intervention with AGBR or polished rice (PR) was implemented in patients with hyperlipidemia for 3 months, and blood lipids were analyzed. Nutritional characteristics of AGBR and PR were measured and compared. Additionally, 16S rDNA sequencing was performed to reveal the differences in gut microbiota between the AGBR and PR groups. Results AGBR relieves hyperlipidemia in patients, as evidenced by reduced levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and apolipoprotein-B, and elevated levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein-A1. In terms of nutrition, AGBR had significantly higher concentrations of free amino acids (10/16 species), γ-aminobutyric acid, resistant starch, soluble dietary fiber, and flavonoids (11/13 species) than PR. In addition, higher microbial abundance, diversity, and uniformity were observed in the AGBR group than in the PR group. At the phylum level, AGBR reduced Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Desulfobacterota, and Synergistota, and elevated Bacteroidota and Verrucomicrobiota. At the genus level, AGBR elevated Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium, Dialister, Prevotella, and Bifidobacterium, and reduced Escherichia-Shigella, Blautia, Romboutsia, and Turicibacter. Discussion AGBR contributes to the remission of hyperlipidemia by modulating the gut microbiota.

Abstract
The fruit of Phyllanthus emblica L. (FEPE) has a long history of use in Asian folk medicine. The main bioactive compounds in FEPE are polyphenols, known for their potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hypolipidemic activities. The present study aimed to investigate the intervention effect of FEPE (100 and 200 mg/kg) on hyperlipidemia for 8 weeks and preliminarily explored the potential mechanism by microbiome-metabolome analysis. The results showed that a high-dose FEPE (200 mg/kg) effectively alleviated dyslipidaemic symptoms and body weight gain in hyperlipidemic mice induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Microbiome analysis showed that FEPE altered the structure of the intestinal microbiota, which included an increase in specific probiotics (such as Akkermansia, Anaerovorax, and Bacteroides) and a decrease in harmful bacteria (including A2, Acetitomaculum, Candidatus_Arthromitus, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, Lachnospiraceae_NK4B4_group, Rikenella, and Streptococcus), as well as a reduction in the level of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). In addition, significant changes in the hepatic metabolome were observed, and eight key metabolites associated with betaine metabolism, lysine degradation, methionine metabolism, and fatty acid metabolism pathways were primarily filtered. The correlated analysis identified several key "microbiota-metabolite" axes in the treatment of hyperlipidemia by FEPE extract. In conclusion, the present study is expected to provide a basis for treating hyperlipidemia with FEPE from the perspective of the microbiome-liver metabolome axis.

Abstract
The dysregulation of lipid metabolism poses a significant health threat, necessitating immediate dietary intervention. Our previous research unveiled the prebiotic-like properties of theabrownin. This study aimed to further investigate the theabrownin-gut microbiota interactions and their downstream effects on lipid metabolism using integrated physiological, genomic, metabolomic, and transcriptomic approaches. The results demonstrated that theabrownin significantly ameliorated dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and systemic inflammation induced by a high-fat/high-cholesterol diet (HFD). Moreover, theabrownin significantly improved HFD-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis and induced significant alterations in microbiota-derived metabolites. Additionally, the detailed interplay between theabrownin and gut microbiota was revealed. Analysis of hepatic transcriptome indicated that FoxO and PPAR signaling pathways played pivotal roles in response to theabrownin-gut microbiota interactions, primarily through upregulating hepatic Foxo1, Prkaa1, Pck1, Cdkn1a, Bcl6, Klf2, Ppara, and Pparg, while downregulating Ccnb1, Ccnb2, Fabp3, and Plin1. These findings underscored the critical role of gut-liver axis in theabrownin-mediated improvements in lipid metabolism disorders and supported the potential of theabrownin as an effective prebiotic compound for targeted regulation of metabolic diseases.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by fat accumulation and inflammation. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has been proven to be effective against NAFLD, but its hepatoprotective mechanisms based on the "gut microbiota-barrier-liver axis" are still not fully understood. Herein, the results demonstrated that EGCG effectively ameliorated NAFLD phenotypes and metabolic disorders in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD), and inhibited intestinal barrier dysfunction and inflammation, which is also supported in the experiment of Caco-2 cells. Moreover, EGCG could restore gut microbiota diversity and composition, particularly promoting beneficial microbes, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) producers, such as Lactobacillus, and suppressing Gram-negative bacteria, such as Desulfovibrio. The microbial modulation raised SCFA levels, decreased lipopolysaccharide levels, inhibited the TLR4/NF-κB pathway, and strengthened intestinal barrier function via Nrf2 pathway activation, thereby alleviating liver steatosis and inflammation. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that 24 key OTUs, negatively or positively associated with NAFLD and metabolic disorders, were also reshaped by EGCG. Our results suggested that a combinative improvement of EGCG on gut microbiota dysbiosis, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and inflammation might be a potential therapeutic target for NAFLD.

Abstract
Adiponectin, an adipose-derived hormone, plays a pivotal role in glucose regulation and lipid metabolism, with a decrease in circulating adiponectin levels being linked to insulin resistance and prediabetes. This review examines the therapeutic potential of adiponectin in managing prediabetes, elucidating on multiple aspects including its role in glucose and lipid metabolism, influence on insulin sensitivity, and anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, the paper highlights the latest strategies to augment adiponectin levels, such as gene therapy, pharmacological interventions, dietary modifications, and lifestyle changes. It also addresses the challenges encountered in translating preclinical findings into clinical practice, primarily related to drug delivery, safety, and efficacy. Lastly, the review proposes future directions, underlining the need for large-scale human trials, novel adiponectin analogs, and personalized treatment strategies to harness adiponectin's full therapeutic potential in preventing the transition from prediabetes to diabetes.

Abstract
With the widespread use of nanoenabled agrochemicals, it is essential to evaluate the food safety of nanomaterials (NMs)-treated vegetable crops in full life cycle studies as well as their potential impacts on human health. Tomato seedlings were foliarly sprayed with 50 mg/L ZnO NMs, including ZnO quantum dots (QDs) and ZnO nanoparticles once per week over 11 weeks. The foliar sprayed ZnO QDs increased fruit dry weight and yield per plant by 39.1% and 24.9, respectively. It also significantly increased the lycopene, amino acids, Zn, B, and Fe in tomato fruits by 40.5%, 15.1%, 44.5%, 76.2%, and 12.8%, respectively. The tomato fruit metabolome of tomatoes showed that ZnO NMs upregulated the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and sphingolipid metabolism and elevated the levels of linoleic and arachidonic acids. The ZnO NMs-treated tomato fruits were then digested in a human gastrointestinal tract model. The results of essential mineral release suggested that the ZnO QDs treatment increased the bioaccessibility of K, Zn, and Cu by 14.8-35.1% relative to the control. Additionally, both types of ZnO NMs had no negative impact on the α-amylase, pepsin, and trypsin activities. The digested fruit metabolome in the intestinal fluid demonstrated that ZnO NMs did not interfere with the normal process of human digestion. Importantly, ZnO NMs treatments increased the glycerophospholipids, carbohydrates, amino acids, and peptides in the intestinal fluids of tomato fruits. This study suggests that nanoscale Zn can be potentially used to increase the nutritional value of vegetable crops and can be an important tool to sustainably increase food quality and security.

Abstract
Microcapsules could improve the protection of probiotics in the lyophilization and gastrointestinal digestion process. The purpose of this study was to prepare Lactiplantibacillus plantarum DMDL 9010 (LP9010) microcapsules by cross-linking chitosan with genipin and to determine the encapsulation efficiency, morphological characterization, storage stability and the application of the microcapsules in fermentation. The results showed that the LP9010 microcapsules embedded in 1.00 wt% genipin cross-linked chitosan were in a uniform spherical shape with a smooth surface and satisfying agglomeration. The LP9010 microcapsules demonstrated the reasonable thermal stability and persistence of biological activity in the range of -20 °C to 25 °C. Additionally, yogurt obtained from the ST + LB + ELP9010 strain formulation with the addition of microencapsulated LP9010 had smaller particles, better taste, and better stability compared with the yogurt obtained from other strain formulations. As detected by GC-MS, the yogurt formulated with ST + LB + ELP9010 as a strain retained more flavor substances and the content of flavor substances was greater than that of the yogurt obtained from other strain formulations. Therefore, genipin cross-link chitosan could be a suitable microencapsulated material for producing yogurt fermentation strains.

Abstract
The exploration of non-toxic and cost-effective dietary components, such as epigallocatechin 3-gallate and myricetin, for health improvement and disease treatment has recently attracted substantial research attention. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has provided a unique opportunity for the investigation and identification of dietary components capable of treating viral infections, as well as gathering the evidence needed to address the major challenges presented by public health emergencies. Dietary components hold great potential as a starting point for further drug development for the treatment and prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection owing to their good safety, broad-spectrum antiviral activities, and multi-organ protective capacity. Here, we review current knowledge of the characteristics-chemical composition, bioactive properties, and putative mechanisms of action-of natural bioactive dietary flavonoids with the potential for targeting SARS-CoV-2 and its variants. Notably, we present promising strategies (combination therapy, lead optimization, and drug delivery) to overcome the inherent deficiencies of natural dietary flavonoids, such as limited bioavailability and poor stability.

Abstract
Green tea polyphenols have numerous functions including antioxidation and modulation of various cellular proteins and are thus beneficial against metabolic diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, and their comorbidities. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant polyphenol in green tea and is attributed to antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities, and the likelihood of targeting multiple metabolic pathways. It has been shown to exhibit anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-arteriosclerotic, and weight-reducing effects in humans. Worldwide, the incidences of metabolic diseases have been escalating across all age groups in modern society. Therefore, EGCG is being increasingly investigated to address the problems. This review presents the current updates on the effects of EGCG on metabolic diseases, and highlights evidence related to its safety. Collectively, this review brings more evidence for therapeutic application and further studies on EGCG and its derivatives to alleviate metabolic diseases and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases.

Abstract
(-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has gained considerable attention owing to its beneficial properties. However, its application as a functional food is restricted due to its instability and low bioavailability. In the present study, a food-derived nanoparticle system based on type A gelatin/γ-PGA was developed to preserve and deliver EGCG. The EGCG/gelatin/γ-PGA nanoparticles had a particle size of 155.1 ± 7.3 nm with a zeta potential of -23.9 ± 0.9 mV. Moreover, the EGCG/gelatin/γ-PGA nanoparticles enhanced the long-term storage stability and sustained antioxidant activity of EGCG compared to EGCG/gelatin nanoparticles. The nanoparticles protected EGCG in simulated gastric fluid containing pepsin while releasing it in simulated intestinal fluid. Additionally, the amount of EGCG transported in the Caco-2 monolayers treated with EGCG/gelatin/γ-PGA nanoparticles was three times higher than that of free EGCG, which might be related to the paracellular pathway and endocytosis. These results suggest that EGCG/gelatin/γ-PGA nanoparticles might be an effective delivery vehicle for EGCG, enhancing its potential applications in the functional food field.

Abstract
The alkali method was used to prepare soybean protein isolate (SPI) and procyanidin B2 (PCB2) complexes, and the interaction between SPI and PCB2 was studied using multi-spectroscopic methods. The human hepatoma (HepG2) cell hyperlipidemia model was used to explore whether SPI-PCB2 has the potential for synergistic hypolipidemia. According to the findings, PCB2 was primarily linked to SPI via C-S and C-N bonds, and the addition of PCB2 reduced the α-helix structure content of SPI by 4.1%. At the cellular level, the optimal SPI-PCB2 ratio for lowering blood lipids was 1:1. Compared with the model group, the TG content and TC content in the 1:1 group were reduced by 28.7% and 26.3%, respectively. Western blot analysis revealed that SPI-PCB2 = 1:1 exerted synergistic hypolipidemic activity mainly by activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase α (AMPKα) phosphorylation, inhibiting 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGCR) and fatty acid synthetase (FAS) protein expression, and upregulating carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1A (CPT1A) protein activity.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a long-term, progressive, and recurrent intestinal inflammatory disorder. The pathogenic mechanisms of IBD are multifaceted and associated with oxidative stress, unbalanced gut microbiota, and aberrant immune response. Indeed, oxidative stress can affect the progression and development of IBD by regulating the homeostasis of the gut microbiota and immune response. Therefore, redox-targeted therapy is a promising treatment option for IBD. Recent evidence has verified that Chinese herbal medicine (CHM)-derived polyphenols, natural antioxidants, are able to maintain redox equilibrium in the intestinal tract to prevent abnormal gut microbiota and radical inflammatory responses. Here, we provide a comprehensive perspective for implementing natural antioxidants as potential IBD candidate medications. In addition, we demonstrate novel technologies and stratagems for promoting the antioxidative properties of CHM-derived polyphenols, including novel delivery systems, chemical modifications, and combination strategies.

Abstract
Long-term stored oolong tea has recently attracted considerable attention concerning its salutary effect. In this study, the anti-obesity effect of different years' oolong tea on high-fat diet-fed mice was compared. Wuyi rock tea of 2001, 2011, and 2020 were chosen to be the representative samples of oolong tea. The results showed that eight-week administration of 2001 Wuyi rock tea (WRT01), 2011 Wuyi rock tea (WRT11), and 2020 Wuyi rock tea (WRT20) extracts (400 mg per kg per d) significantly decreased the body weight and attenuated the obesity in high-fat diet-fed mice. 2001 and 2011 Wuyi rock teas reduced obesity mainly through regulating lipid metabolism and activating the AMPK/SREBP-1 pathway, downregulating the expression of SREBP-1, FAS, and ACC and upregulating CPT-1a expression; while the 2011 and 2020 Wuyi rock teas by moderating the gut microbiota dysbiosis, reshaping the gut microbiota, and promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria, especially Akkermansia. 2011 Wuyi rock tea was proven to be more effective in reducing body weight gain and liver oxidative stress than the others. Collectively, all three Wuyi rock teas of different years alleviated high-fat diet-induced obesity by regulating lipid metabolism and modulating gut microbiota, whereas the emphasis of their internal mechanism is different with different storage ages.

Abstract
IntroductionCamellia oil (CO), a common edible oil in China, contains a variety of active ingredients. In this study, we explored the combining effect and optimal feeding time of CO and squalene on hyperlipemia-induced reproductive damage rats and probably provided supportive data for use of CO for health benefits.MethodsWe established the hyperlipidaemia-induced reproductive damage model, and then the successfully modeled rats were randomly classified into four groups including a model control (MC) group, a camellia oil (CO) group, a camellia oil + squalene (COS) group, and a sildenafil (SN) group, which were feeding with different subjects during days 30 and 60. The normal (NC) group was fed under the same conditions.ResultsOur results showed that compared with the MC group, the CO, COS, and SN groups could significantly decline the serum TG, TC and LDL-C levels, increase the serum testosterone levels, the sperm counts in epididymidis and organ coefficients of penises, and no pathological change in penis and testis at days 30 and 60. Compared with the pure CO, the mixture of CO and squalene could significantly enhance the effect of decreasing the concentrations of TG, TC, and LDL-C and increasing the serum testosterone level and sperm count of epididymal tail, and the results of day 30 were better than those of day 60.DiscussionCO and squalene have a combining effect on lowering blood lipid, improving the level of testosterone and the number of epididymal tail sperm, and promoting the recovery of erectile and sexual function on hyperlipidemia-induced reproductive damage rats on day 30.
