Time-Dependent and Coating Modulation of Tomato Response upon Sulfur Nanoparticle Internalization and Assimilation: An Orthogonal Mechanistic Investigation

Nanoenabled strategies have recently attracted attention as a sustainable platform for agricultural applications. Here, we present a mechanistic understanding of nanobiointeraction through an orthogonal investigation. Pristine (nS) and stearic acid surface-modified (cS) sulfur nanoparticles (NPs) as a multifunctional nanofertilizer were applied to tomato (Solanum lycopersicumL.) through soil. Both nS and cS increased root mass by 73% and 81% and increased shoot weight by 35% and 50%, respectively, compared to the untreated controls. Bulk sulfur (bS) and ionic sulfate (iS) had no such stimulatory effect. Notably, surface modification of S NPs had a positive impact, as cS yielded 38% and 51% greater shoot weight compared to nS at 100 and 200 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, nS and cS significantly improved leaf photosynthesis by promoting the linear electron flow, quantum yield of photosystem II, and relative chlorophyll content. The time-dependent gene expression related to two S bioassimilation and signaling pathways showed a specific role of NP surface physicochemical properties. Additionally, a time-dependent Global Test and machine learning strategy applied to understand the NP surface modification domain metabolomic profiling showed that cS increased the contents of IA, tryptophan, tomatidine, and scopoletin in plant leaves compared to the other treatments. These findings provide critical mechanistic insights into the use of nanoscale sulfur as a multifunctional soil amendment to enhance plant performance as part of nanoenabled agriculture.

Co-pyrolysis of alkali-fused fly ash and corn stover to synthesize biochar composites for remediating lead-contaminated soil

Fly ash (FA) is mainly composed of silica, alumina, and other metal oxide components, and has a positive stabilizing effect on soil heavy metals. Biochar composites produced from FA and corn stover (CS) can improve its remediation performance. Therefore, a batch of biochar composites (alkali-fused FA-CS biochars, ABs), synthesized via co-pyrolysis of CS and alkali-fused FA (AFFA) at different temperatures of 300, 500, and 700 °C (AB300-1, AB500-1, and AB700-1) and CS to AFFA mass ratios of 10:1, 10:2, and 10:5 (AB500-1, AB500-2, and AB500-5), was used to remediate lead (Pb)-contaminated soil. Compared with pristine biochars (BCs), ABs were enriched with oxygen-containing functional groups (Si-O-Si and Si-O) and aromatic structures. The ABs prepared at lower pyrolytic temperature (≤ 500 °C) and lower ratio of CS to AFFA (10:1) showed higher yield and stability. The contents of Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP)-extractable Pb and DTPA-CaCl2-triethanolamine (DTPA)-extractable Pb were generally lower in the soils amended with ABs than BCs. Compared with other ABs such as AB300-1, AB500-2, AB500-5, and AB700-1, the soil amended with AB500-1 had lower contents of TCLP and DTPA-extractable Pb (24% reduction), exhibiting superior performance in stabilizing Pb in the soil. The gradual decrease of DTPA-extractable Pb content in the soil with increasing dosage of AB500-1 amendments suggests that AB500-1 facilitated the conversion of bioavailable Pb to the stable and less toxic residual fractions. Specifically, the highest percentage of residual fraction of Pb in soil amended with AB500-1 was 14%. Correlation analyses showed that the soil DTPA-extractable Pb content decreased with the increase of soil pH and cation-exchange capacity (CEC) value. ABs stabilize Pb in the soils mainly via electrostatic attraction, precipitation, cation-π interaction, cation exchange, and complexation. These findings provide insights for producing functionalized biochar composites from industrial waste like FA and biomass waste for remediating the soils polluted by heavy metals.

Tire plastic and road-wear particles on Yujing Expressway in the restoration area of Mu Us Sandy Land: Occurrence characteristics and ecological risk screening

Tire plastic and road-wear particles (TPR-WP) are a current research priority as one of the main environmental sources of microplastics. We selected a unique land use type - desert restoration area, collected soil and dust samples from the Yujing Expressway and its service areas, and analyzed TPR-WP abundance, type, size and morphology by laser direct infrared (LDIR). The abundance of TPR-WP in expressway dust (14,446.87 ± 10,234.24 n/kg) was higher than that in soil (7500 ± 3253.64 n/kg). Random forest model showed that the source of TPR-WP was highly correlated with economic factors and natural climate. Overall, the proportion of small and medium-sized TPR-WP in dust was higher than soil, more than half of the TPR-WP in dust were in 20 - 50 µm range. The proportion of small particle size TPR-WP increased with the rise of elevation. The pollution load index suggested that the survey region was generally at level I risk zone, while the ecological risk index indicated that the pollution level of expressway was III and IV, and the service area was IV. In general, the study was of great significance for clarifying the distribution and risk of TPR-WP in soil and dust of expressways and service areas.

Comparative investigation on chemical and green synthesized titanium dioxide nanoparticles against chromium (VI) stress eliciting differential physiological, biochemical, and cellular attributes in Helianthus annuus L

Nanotechnology is a new scientific area that promotes unique concepts to comprehend the optimal mechanics of nanoparticles (NPs) in plants under heavy metal stress. The present investigation focuses on effects of synthetic and green synthesized titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs and gTiO2 NPs) against Cr(VI). Green TiO2 NPs have been produced from plant leaf extract (Ricinus communis L.). Synthesis was confirmed employing an array of optical spectroscopic and electron microscopic techniques. Chromium strongly accelerated H2O2 and MDA productions by 227 % and 266 % at highest chromium concentration (60 mg/kg of soil), respectively, and also caused DNA damage, and decline in photosynthesis. Additionally, anomalies were observed in stomatal cells with gradual increment in chromium concentrations. Conversely, foliar applications of TiO2 NPs and gTiO2 NPs considerably mitigated chromium stress. Sunflower plants treated with modest amounts of green TiO2 NPs had significantly better growth index compared to chemically synthesized ones. Principal component analysis highlighted the variations among photosynthetic attributes, oxidative stress markers, and antioxidant defense systems. Notably, gTiO2 supplementation to the Cr(VI) strained plants minimized PC3 production which is a rare report so far. Conclusively, gTiO2 NPs have been identified to be promising nano-based nutrition resource for farming applications.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungus Alleviates Charged Nanoplastic Stress in Host Plants via Enhanced Defense-Related Gene Expressions and Hyphal Capture

Contamination of small-sized plastics is recognized as a factor of global change. Nanoplastics (NPs) can readily enter organisms and pose significant ecological risks. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are the most ubiquitous and impactful plant symbiotic fungi, regulating essential ecological functions. Here, we first found that an AM fungus, Rhizophagus irregularis, increased lettuce shoot biomass by 25-100% when exposed to positively and negatively charged NPs vs control, although it did not increase that grown without NPs. The stress alleviation was attributed to the upregulation of gene expressions involving phytohormone signaling, cell wall metabolism, and oxidant scavenging. Using a root organ-fungus axenic growth system treated with fluorescence-labeled NPs, we subsequently revealed that the hyphae captured NPs and further delivered them to roots. NPs were observed at the hyphal cell walls, membranes, and spore walls. NPs mediated by the hyphae were localized at the root epidermis, cortex, and stele. Hyphal exudates aggregated positively charged NPs, thereby reducing their uptake due to NP aggregate formation (up to 5000 nm). This work demonstrates the critical roles of AM fungus in regulating NP behaviors and provides a potential strategy for NP risk mitigation in terrestrial ecosystems. Consequent NP-induced ecological impacts due to the affected AM fungi require further attention.

Inhibitory effects of black phosphorus nanosheets on tumor cell proliferation through downregulation of ADIPOQ and downstream signaling pathways

Exposure to environmental pollutants, including nanomaterials, has a significant impact on tumor progression. The increased demand for black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs), driven by their exceptional properties, raises concerns about potential environmental contamination. Assessing their toxicity on tumor growth is essential. Herein, we employed a range of biological techniques, including cytotoxicity measurement, bioinformatics tools, proteomics, target gene overexpression, Western blot analysis, and apoptosis detection, to investigate the toxicity of BPNSs across A549, HepG-2, MCF-7, and Caco-2 cell lines. Our results demonstrated that BPNSs downregulated the expression of ADIPOQ and its associated downstream pathways, such as AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and other unidentified pathways. These downregulated pathways ultimately led to mitochondria-dependent apoptosis. Notably, the specific downstream pathways involved varied depending on the type of tumors. These insightful findings not only confirm the consistent inhibitory effects of BPNSs across different tumor cells, but also elucidate the cytotoxicity mechanisms of BPNSs in different tumors, providing valuable information for their safe application and health risk assessment.

Identifying the Stripping of Oxide Debris from Graphene Oxide: Evidence from Experimental Analysis and Molecular Simulation

In this study, characteristics of oxidation debris (OD) and its stripping mechanism from graphene oxide (GO) were explored. The results demonstrated that OD contains three components, namely, protein-, fulvic acid-, and humic acid-like substances; among these, protein-like substances with lower molecular weight and higher hydrophilicity were most liable to be stripped from GO and were the primary components stripped from GO at pH < 10, whereas humic acid- and fulvic acid-like substances were stripped from GO at pH > 10. During the stripping of OD, hydrogen bonds from carboxyl and carbonyl were the first to break, followed by hydrogen bonds from epoxy. Subsequently, π-π interactions were broken, and hydrogen bond interactions induced by hydroxyl groups were the hardest to break. After the stripping of OD, the recombination of OD on GO was observed, and regions containing relatively fewer oxygen-containing functional groups were favorable binding sites for the readsorbed OD. The stripping and recombination of OD on GO resulted in an uneven GO surface, which should be considered during the development of GO-based environmental materials and the evaluation of their environmental behavior.

Novel Defluorination Pathways of Perfluoroether Compounds (GenX): α-Fe2O3 Nanoparticle Layer Retains Higher Concentrations of Effective Hydrated Electrons

The development of efficient defluorination technology is an important issue because the kind of emerging pollutant of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (GenX) as an alternative to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has the higher environmental risks. In the UV/bisulfite system, we first developed a hydrophobic confined α-Fe2O3 nanoparticle layer rich in oxygen vacancies, which accelerated the enrichment of HSO3- and GenX on the surface and pores through electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interaction, retaining more hydrated electrons (eaq-) and rapidly destroying GenX under UV excitation. Especially, under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, the degradation percentage of GenX obtain nearly 100%, defluorination of GenX to 88 and 57% respectively. It was amazed to find that the three parallel H/F exchange pathways triggered by the rapid reactions of eaq- and GenX, which were unique to anaerobic conditions, improved the efficiency of fluoride removal and weaken the interference of dissolved oxygen and H+. Therefore, this study provided an available material and mechanism for sustainable fluoride removal from wastewater in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

La2O3 Nanoparticles Can Cause Cracking of Tomato Fruit through Genetic Reconstruction

La2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) have shown great potential in agriculture, but cracking of plant sensitive tissue could occur during application, resulting in a poor appearance, facilitating entry for insects and fungi, and increasing economic losses. Herein, exocarp cracking mechanisms of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) fruit in response to La2O3 NPs were investigated. Tomato plants were exposed to La2O3 NPs (0-40 mg/L, 90 days) by a split-root system under greenhouse condition. La2O3 NPs with high concentrations (25 and 40 mg/L) increased the obvious cracking of the fruit exocarp by 20.0 and 22.7%, respectively. After exposure to 25 mg/L La2O3 NPs, decreased thickness of the cuticle and cell wall and lower wax crystallization patterns of tomato fruit exocarp were observed. Biomechanical properties (e.g., firmness and stiffness) of fruit exocarp were decreased by 34.7 and 25.9%, respectively. RNA-sequencing revealed that the thinner cuticle was caused by the downregulation of cuticle biosynthesis related genes; pectin remodeling, including the reduction in homogalacturonan (e.g., LOC101264880) and rhamnose (e.g., LOC101248505), was responsible for the thinner cell wall. Additionally, genes related to water and abscisic acid homeostasis were significantly upregulated, causing the increases of water and soluble solid content of fruit and elevated fruit inner pressure. Therefore, the thinner fruit cuticle and cell wall combined with the higher inner pressure caused fruit cracking. This study improves our understanding of nanomaterials on important agricultural crops, including the structural reconstruction of fruit exocarp contributing to NPs-induced cracking at the molecular level.

Antibiotics and microplastics in manure and surrounding soil of farms in the Loess Plateau: Occurrence and correlation

The wide use of animal manure in farmland operations is a source of soil nutrients. However, the return of manure affected antibiotics and microplastics in the soil, thus the potential ecological risks cannot be overlooked. This study investigated the distribution of different antibiotics and microplastics and their correlation. It was found that multiple classes of veterinary antibiotics and microplastics could be detected simultaneously in most manure and soil. In manure, the average concentration of tetracycline antibiotics was higher than fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides. A much lower concentration of antibiotics was found in the soil samples relative to manure. The abundance of microplastics ranged from 21,333 to 88,333 n/kg in manure, and the average abundance was 50,583 ± 24,318 n/kg. The average abundance was 3056 ± 1746 n/kg in the soil. It confirmed that applying organic fertilizer to agricultural soil and the application of plastic mulch in farmlands introduced microplastics. Moreover, microplastics were found to be significantly correlated with antibiotics (r = 0.698, p < 0.001). The correlation between microplastics and antibiotics in soil was significantly weaker than that in manure. Farms could be the hotspot for the co-spread of microplastics and antibiotics. These findings highlighted the co-occurrence of antibiotics and microplastics in agricultural environments.

Co-fermentation of titanium-flocculated-sludge with food waste towards simultaneous water purification and resource recovery

Recovery of resources from domestic sewage and food waste has always been an international-thorny problem. Titanium-based flocculation can achieve high-efficient destabilization, quick concentration and separation of organic matter from sewage to sludge. This study proposed co-fermentation of the titanium-flocculated sludge (Ti-loaded sludge) and food waste towards resource recovery by converting organic matter to value-added volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and inorganic matter to struvite and TiO2 nanoparticles. When Ti-loaded sludge and food waste were co-fermented at a mass ratio of 3:1, the VFAs yield reached 3725.2 mg-COD/L (VFAs/SCOD 91.0%), which was more than 4 times higher than the case of the sludge alone. The 48-day semicontinuous co-fermentation demonstrated stable long-term operation, yielding VFAs at 2529.0 mg-COD/L (VFAs/SCOD 89.8%) and achieving a high CODVFAs/NNH4 of 58.9. Food waste provided sufficient organic substrate, enriching plenty of acid-producing fermentation bacteria (such as Prevotella 7 about 21.0% and Bacteroides about 9.4%). Moreover, metagenomic sequencing analysis evidenced the significant increase of the relative gene abundance corresponding to enzymes in pathways, such as extracellular hydrolysis, substrates metabolism, and VFAs biosynthesis. After fermentation, the precious element P (≥ 99.0%) and extra-added element Ti (≥99.0%) retained in fermented residues, without releasing to VFAs supernatant, which facilitated the direct re-use of VFAs as resource. Through simple and commonly used calcination and acid leaching methodologies, 80.9% of element P and 82.1% of element Ti could be successfully recovered as struvite and TiO2 nanoparticles, respectively. This research provides a strategy for the co-utilization of domestic sludge and food waste, which can realize both reduction of sludge and recovery of resources.

Microplastic fragmentation by rotifers in aquatic ecosystems contributes to global nanoplastic pollution

The role of aquatic organisms in the biological fragmentation of microplastics and their contribution to global nanoplastic pollution are poorly understood. Here we present a biological fragmentation pathway that generates nanoplastics during the ingestion of microplastics by rotifers, a commonly found and globally distributed surface water zooplankton relevant for nutrient recycling. Both marine and freshwater rotifers could rapidly grind polystyrene, polyethylene and photo-aged microplastics, thus releasing smaller particulates during ingestion. Nanoindentation studies of the trophi of the rotifer chitinous mastax revealed a Young's modulus of 1.46 GPa, which was higher than the 0.79 GPa for polystyrene microparticles, suggesting a fragmentation mechanism through grinding the edges of microplastics. Marine and freshwater rotifers generated over 3.48 × 105 and 3.66 × 105 submicrometre particles per rotifer in a day, respectively, from photo-aged microplastics. Our data suggest the ubiquitous occurrence of microplastic fragmentation by different rotifer species in natural aquatic environments of both primary and secondary microplastics of various polymer compositions and provide previously unidentified insights into the fate of microplastics and the source of nanoplastics in global surface waters.

Interfacial interactions of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics and malachite green, tetracycline in aqueous environments

Polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs) are one of pivotal nondegradable emerging pollutant. Here the variation of the surface physicochemical characteristics of PET-MPs with UV irradiation aging and the adsorption behaviors of PET-MPs in malachite green (MG), tetracycline (TC) solution and the effect of coexisting Cu(II) were comparatively investigated. The yellowing, weakened hydrophobicity, and increased surface negative charge, crystallinity degree and oxygen-containing functional groups were manifested specifically by the aged PET-MPs. Different from the single system, the hydrophobic interaction and metal ion bridging complexation dominated the adsorption of MG and TC, respectively, in the binary solution. While in the ternary solution, cationic ion competition of Cu(II) with MG decreased its capture, and the formation of PET-Cu(II)-TC ternary complexes promoted TC adsorption. Moreover, PET-MPs could serve as an efficient vector for MG and TC in MG/TC/Cu(II) ternary system, indicating PET-MPs tend to carry more varieties in the complex environment, that may increase the environmental risk of PET-MPs.

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dots Facilitate CRISPR/Cas for Reducing Antibiotic Resistance Genes in the Environment

The continued acquisition and propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment confound efforts to manage the global rise in antibiotic resistance. Here, CRISPR-Cas9/sgRNAs carried by nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were developed to precisely target multi-"high-risk" ARGs (tet, cat, and aph(3')-Ia) commonly detected in the environment. NCDs facilitated the delivery of Cas9/sgRNAs to Escherichia coli (E. coli) without cytotoxicity, achieving sustained elimination of target ARGs. The elimination was optimized using different weight ratios of NCDs and Cas9 protein (1:1, 1:20, and 1:40), and Cas9/multi sgRNAs were designed to achieve multi-cleavage of ARGs in either a single strain or mixed populations. Importantly, NCDs successfully facilitated Cas9/multi sgRNAs for resensitization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in soil (approaching 50%), whereas Cas9/multi sgRNAs alone were inactivated in the complex environment. This work highlights the potential of a fast and precise strategy to minimize the reservoir of antibiotic resistance in agricultural system.

Accumulation of microplastics in soil after long-term application of biosolids and atmospheric deposition

Land-applied biosolids can be a considerable source of microplastics in soils. Previous studies reported microplastics accumulation in soils from biosolid application, however, little is known about the contribution of atmospherically deposited microplastics to agricultural soils. In this study, we quantified and characterized microplastics in soils that have been amended with biosolids over the past 23 years. We also collected atmospheric deposition samples to determine the amount and type of plastics added to soils through atmospheric input over a period of about 2 years. Soil samples were taken from a replicated field trial where biosolids have been applied at rates of 0, 4.8, 6.9, and 9.0 t/ha every second crop. The biosolids were anaerobically digested and dewatered, and were applied by spreading onto the soil surface. Soil and atmospheric samples were extracted for microplastics by Fenton's reaction to remove organic matter followed by flotation in a zinc chloride solution to separate plastic from soil particles. Samples were analyzed for microplastics by optical microscopy and Laser Direct Infrared Imaging Analysis (LDIR). The mean number of microplastics identified from biosolids samples was 12,000 particles/kg dry biosolids. The long-term applications of biosolids to the soil led to mean plastics concentrations of 383, 500, and 361 particles/kg dry soil in the 0-10 cm depth for low, medium, and high biosolids application rates, respectively. These plastic concentrations were not significantly different from each other, but significantly higher than those found in non biosolids-amended soil (117 particles/kg dry soil). The dominant plastic types by number found in biosolids were polyurethane, followed by polyethylene, and polyamide. The most abundant plastics in soil samples were polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide, and polyethylene. Atmospheric deposition contributed to 15 particles/kg dry soil per year and was mainly composed of polyamide fibers. This study shows that long-term application of biosolids led to an accumulation of microplastics in soil, but that atmospheric deposition also contributes a considerable input of microplastics.

Aging and characterization of disposable polypropylene plastic cups based microplastics and its adsorption for methylene blue

Microplastics (MPs) as emerging pollutants are of increasing concern, due to their ubiquitous, uncertain, and complex environmental impacts. Different from the standard spherical MPs without additives, here polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) in flake derived from the disposable plastic cup in food-grade in daily life were studied. The characterization of PP-MPs demonstrated that the carbonyl index represented the aging degree was enhanced from 0.26 significantly to 0.82 after 10 days, and the aging process fitted well with pseudo-first-order kinetic. Moreover, the crystallinity degree, polarity and surface negative charges were enhanced, while the hydrophobicity was decreased. The adsorption behavior of PP-MPs toward methylene blue (MB), and the impacts of various pHs, salinities, and humic acid in aquatic environments were also explored. The pseudo-second-order kinetic, Henry and Sips isotherm models provided a good correlation with the experimental data, indicating that the rate-limiting step was closely related with the complex surface adsorption, and the hydrophobic partitioning, polar interaction, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding were possibly involved in the adsorption. These exhaustive experiments aim to provide a theoretical basis for assessing and better understanding the environmental behavior of disposable PP plastic cups in nature.

Steam disinfection enhances bioaccessibility of metallic nanoparticles in nano-enabled silicone-rubber baby bottle teats, pacifiers, and teethers

Nano-enabled silicone-rubber articles for feeding or chewing could be a source of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) directly exposed to infants and young children. However, the impact of steam disinfection on release of NPs and the related potential risks to children's health are unknown. Here, we investigated contents and form of Ag and Zn in 57 nano-enabled silicone-rubber baby bottle teats, pacifiers, and teethers of seven countries and examined the impacts of steam disinfection on in vitro bioaccessibility (IVBA) of Ag and Zn in the articles. Nearly 89% articles had a mixture of Ag- and Zn-containing NPs and the teethers had relatively high Ag and Zn contents (up to 501 and 254 µg/g, respectively). Steam disinfection caused rubber decomposition into micro(nano)plastics (0.54-15.7 µm) and NP release from the interior of bulk rubber and micro-sized plastics, thus enhancing the IVBA of Ag and Zn by up to 5.5 times. The findings provide insights into mechanisms for NP release by steam disinfection. Though oral exposure risk assessment suggested low health concerns on individual metal release, our study points out the need to assess the potential health risks of child co-exposure to metallic NPs and micro(nano)plastics.

Suspected sources of microplastics and nanoplastics: Contamination from experimental reagents and solvents

There is an increasing concern about the potential effects of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics on human health and other organisms. For the separation and detection of MPs, there are various approaches, and the distinct procedures led to different results. However, the presence of MPs in the reagents was not addressed, which could cause false and/or inaccurate results during MPs detection. In this study, the chemical reagents commonly used for the separation and detection of MPs were selected to ascertain whether these reagents introduce MPs. It was shown that a large number of MPs were detected in the reagent and solvent samples. The largest number of MPs (>1 μm) was detected in the KOH reagent, with the abundance of 3070 items/g. The order of MPs abundance in the selected reagents was: KOH > NaCl > CaCl2 > SDS > NaI > H2O2. The types of MPs were the same as the body and stopper of the reagent packaging bottles. MPs size detected in reagent bottles was primarily smaller than 10 μm. The abundance of MPs in the reagents were independent of their purity, however, there was a certain difference in MPs abundance in reagents from different manufacturers. Furthermore, the presence of nanoplastics (< 1 μm) was verified in the reagents through Py-GCMS, with the abundance (39.47-43.01 mg/kg) higher than that of MPs. The obtained results in this study raised specific requirements and cautions for MPs and nanoplastics related research in terms of quality control. Also, this work can facilitate a more accurate assessment of MPs concentrations in the environment.

Ascertaining appropriate measuring methods to determine tire wear particle pollution on driving school grounds in China

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are garnering increasing attention due to their potential adverse environmental impacts. However, precisely ascertaining TWPs content is challenging due to the complexity and variability of the tire components used in the environment, indicating that more reliable methods to accurately determine TWPs are necessary. In this study, driving school grounds were used as a case study to ascertain an appropriate and reliable method to determine TWPs levels based on a comprehensive comparison between different analytical results using styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), and zinc (Zn) as analytical markers. Thermogravimetric analysis-Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TGA-GC-MS) method reliability using SBR was verified and applied to measure TWPs levels on driving school grounds. By reliably converting SBR content to TWPs content, the average TWPs content on driving school grounds was measured at 190.13 ± 101.89 mg/g. The highest TWPs content was 281.83 ± 171.44 mg/g under the reverse stall parking driving programs, while the slope start and stop driving programs was lower at 208.36 ± 124.11 mg/g. Our findings highlight the importance of accurately determining TWPs content within specific environments while comprehensively exploring associated patterns of change to better understand the environmental risks of TWPs.

Toxicity Mechanisms of Nanoplastics on Crop Growth, Interference of Phyllosphere Microbes, and Evidence for Foliar Penetration and Translocation

Despite the increasing prevalence of atmospheric nanoplastics (NPs), there remains limited research on their phytotoxicity, foliar absorption, and translocation in plants. In this study, we aimed to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the physiological effects of tomato leaves exposed to differently charged NPs and foliar absorption and translocation of NPs. We found that positively charged NPs caused more pronounced physiological effects, including growth inhibition, increased antioxidant enzyme activity, and altered gene expression and metabolite composition and even significantly changed the structure and composition of the phyllosphere microbial community. Also, differently charged NPs exhibited differential foliar absorption and translocation, with the positively charged NPs penetrating more into the leaves and dispersing uniformly within the mesophyll cells. Additionally, NPs absorbed by the leaves were able to translocate to the roots. These findings provide important insights into the interactions between atmospheric NPs and crop plants and demonstrate that NPs' accumulation in crops could negatively impact agricultural production and food safety.

A case on source to soil to solutions: Distribution characteristics of microplastics in farmland soil of the largest vegetable base in Northwest China

The wide application of facility agriculture accelerated the rapid development of agriculture. However, microplastics pollution in the soil caused by long-term residual agricultural film posed a significant threat to the soil ecosystem and human health. Jingyang County of Shaanxi Province was the largest vegetable planting base in northwest China. Soil samples of facility agriculture and non-facility agriculture were collected to investigate the distribution characteristics and risks of microplastics. The abundance of microplastics in Jingyang County ranged from 200.00 to 4733.33 n·kg-1, and the mean abundance was 1955.00 n·kg-1. Microplastics abundance in facility agriculture soil was higher than that in non-facility agriculture soil, and it increased with the growth of planting years. In general, the size of soil microplastics was mainly <100 μm and the abundance was negatively correlated with particle size. There were 30 types of chemical constituents in the microplastics detected, and PE (47.03 %) and PET (11.48 %) were the main ones. In addition, the types of microplastics in soil were identical with those detected in irrigation water and fertilizer, which provided another source of soil microplastics. All the sampling sites were ecological risk category I, and there was no carcinogenic risk to human health at present. In the future, the government should advocated and encouraged farmers to improve mulch recycling efficiency. Correspondingly, more positive action should be taken to the management on mulch recycling and the standards on placement of waste agricultural inputs. This study would provide foundation data for the research of microplastics pollution in farmland and the risk assessment of ecosystem and human health.

[Immunogenicity, safety and immune persistence of the sequential booster with the recombinant protein-based COVID-19 vaccine (CHO cell) in healthy people aged 18-84 years]

Objective: To evaluate the immunogenicity, safety, and immune persistence of the sequential booster with the recombinant protein-based COVID-19 vaccine (CHO cell) in healthy people aged 18-84 years. Methods: An open-label, multi-center trial was conducted in October 2021. The eligible healthy individuals, aged 18-84 years who had completed primary immunization with the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine 3 to 9 months before, were recruited from Shangyu district of Shaoxing and Kaihua county of Quzhou, Zhejiang province. All participants were divided into three groups based on the differences in prime-boost intervals: Group A (3-4 months), Group B (5-6 months) and Group C (7-9 months), with 320 persons per group. All participants received the recombinant COVID-19 vaccine (CHO cell). Blood samples were collected before the vaccination and after receiving the booster at 14 days, 30 days, and 180 days for analysis of GMTs, antibody positivity rates, and seroconversion rates. All adverse events were collected within one month and serious adverse events were collected within six months. The incidences of adverse reactions were analyzed after the booster. Results: The age of 960 participants was (52.3±11.5) years old, and 47.4% were males (455). The GMTs of Groups B and C were 65.26 (54.51-78.12) and 60.97 (50.61-73.45) at 14 days after the booster, both higher than Group A's 44.79 (36.94-54.30) (P value<0.05). The GMTs of Groups B and C were 23.95 (20.18-28.42) and 27.98 (23.45-33.39) at 30 days after the booster, both higher than Group A's 15.71 (13.24-18.63) (P value <0.05). At 14 days after the booster, the antibody positivity rates in Groups A, B, and C were 91.69% (276/301), 94.38% (302/320), and 93.95% (295/314), respectively. The seroconversion rates in the three groups were 90.37% (272/301), 93.75% (300/320), and 93.31% (293/314), respectively. There was no significant difference among these rates in the three groups (all P values >0.05). At 30 days after the booster, antibody positivity rates in Groups A, B, and C were 79.60% (238/299), 87.74% (279/318), and 90.48% (285/315), respectively. The seroconversion rates in the three groups were 76.92% (230/299), 85.85% (273/318), and 88.25% (278/315), respectively. There was a significant difference among these rates in the three groups (all P values <0.001). During the sequential booster immunization, the incidence of adverse events in 960 participants was 15.31% (147/960), with rates of about 14.38% (46/320), 17.50% (56/320), and 14.06% (45/320) in Groups A, B, and C, respectively. The incidence of adverse reactions was 8.02% (77/960), with rates of about 7.50% (24/320), 6.88% (22/320), and 9.69% (31/320) in Groups A, B, and C, respectively. No serious adverse events related to the booster were reported. Conclusion: Healthy individuals aged 18-84 years, who had completed primary immunization with the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine 3 to 9 months before, have good immunogenicity and safety profiles following the sequential booster with the recombinant COVID-19 vaccine (CHO cell).

A multi-omics approach to unravelling the coupling mechanism of nitrogen metabolism and phenanthrene biodegradation in soil amended with biochar

The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil negatively affects the environment and the degradation of these contaminants is influenced by nitrogen metabolism. However, the mechanisms underlying the interrelationships between the functional genes involved in nitrogen metabolism and phenanthrene (PHE) biodegradation, as well as the effects of biochar on these mechanisms, require further study. Therefore, this study utilised metabolomic and metagenomic analysis to investigate primary nitrogen processes, associated functional soil enzymes and functional genes, and differential soil metabolites in PHE-contaminated soil with and without biochar amendment over a 45-day incubation period. Results showed that dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and denitrification were the dominant nitrogen metabolism processes in PHE-contaminated soil. The addition of biochar enhanced nitrogen modules, exhibiting discernible temporal fluctuations in denitrification and DNRA proportions. Co-occurrence networks and correlation heatmap analysis revealed potential interactions among functional genes and enzymes responsible for PHE biodegradation and nitrogen metabolism. Notably, enzymes associated with denitrification and DNRA displayed significant positive correlation with enzymes involved in downstream phenanthrene degradation. Of particular interest was stronger correlation observed with the addition of biochar. However, biochar amendment inhibited the 9-phenanthrol degradation pathway, resulting in elevated levels of glutathione (GSH) in response to environmental stress. These findings provide new insights into the interactions between nitrogen metabolism and PHE biodegradation in soil and highlight the dual effects of biochar on these processes.

Transport proteins and their differential roles in the accumulation of phenanthrene in wheat

The study focuses on the uptake, accumulation, and translocation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cereals, specifically exploring the role of peroxidase (UniProt accession: A0A3B5XXD0, abbreviation: PX1) and unidentified protein (UniProt accession: A0A3B6LUC6, abbreviation: UP1) in phenanthrene solubilization within wheat xylem sap. This research aims to clarify the interactions between these proteins and phenanthrene. Employing both in vitro and in vivo analyses, we evaluated the solubilization capabilities of recombinant transport proteins for phenanthrene and examined the relationship between protein expression and phenanthrene concentration. UP1 displayed greater transport efficiency, while PX1 excelled at lower concentrations. Elevated PX1 levels contributed to phenanthrene degradation, marginally diminishing its transport. Spectral analyses and molecular dynamics simulations validated the formation of stable protein-phenanthrene complexes. The study offers crucial insights into PAH-related health risks in crops by elucidating the mechanisms of PAH accumulation facilitated by transport proteins.

Expeditious profiling of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons transport and obstruction mechanisms in crop xylem sap proteins via proteomics and molecular docking

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose significant environmental risks due to their toxicity and carcinogenic properties. This research seeks to pinpoint protein targets in crop xylem sap related to PAH contamination and delve into their protein-ligand interactions using computational tools. Proteomic assessment revealed differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), which were subjected to virtual high-throughput screening. Notably, the phenanthrene's influence on xylem sap proteins in maize and wheat was more pronounced than in soybean, with DEPs expression peak at 24 h post-treatment. Maize DEPs were predominantly associated with lipid biosynthesis. Phenanthrene impacted cell membrane hydrophobicity, limiting PAH adsorption and decreasing its concentration in maize xylem sap. Wheat DEPs exhibited an increase in ABC transporters after 24 h of phenanthrene exposure. ABC transporters interacted with stress-responsive proteins like C6TIY1-Co-chaperone p23 and others that either facilitate or inhibit PAH transport, including Indeno[1,2,3-cd]Pyrene and C6TIY1-Co-chaperone protein p23. Both maize and wheat created high-affinity complexes between specific proteins and PAHs, influencing their transport. This study provides insights into the mechanisms of PAH regulation and movement within plant xylem.

Nano-Iron Oxide (Fe3O4) Mitigates the Effects of Microplastics on a Ryegrass Soil-Microbe-Plant System

To understand microplastic-nanomaterial interactions in agricultural systems, a randomized block 90-day pot experiment was set up to cultivate ryegrass seedings in a typical red sandy soil amended with compost (1:9 ratio). Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) microplastic (MP) contaminants were added into pot soils at 0.1 and 10%, whereas nano-Fe3O4 (as nanoenabled agrochemicals) was added at 0.1% and 0.5% in comparison with chemical-free controls. The combination of nano-Fe3O4 and MPs significantly increased the soil pH (+3% to + 17%) but decreased the total nitrogen content (-9% to - 30%; P < 0.05). The treatment group with both nano-Fe3O4 and PE had the highest total soil C (29 g kg-1 vs 20 g kg-1 in control) and C/N ratio (13 vs 8 in control). Increased rhizosphere nano-Fe3O4 concentrations promoted ryegrass growth (+42% dry weight) by enhancing the chlorophyll (+20%) and carotenoid (+15%) activities. Plant leaf and root peroxidase enzyme activity was more significantly affected by nano-Fe3O4 with PVC (+15%) than with PE (+6%). Nano-Fe3O4 significantly changed the ryegrass bacterial community structure from belowground (the rhizoplane and root endosphere) to aboveground (the phylloplane). Under MP contamination, the addition of nano-Fe3O4 increased bacterial diversity (+0.35%) and abundance (+30%) in the phylloplane and further intensified the connectivity of ryegrass aboveground bacterial networks (positive association increased 17%). The structural equation model showed that the change in the plant microbiome was associated with the rhizosphere microbiome. Overall, these findings imply the positive influences of nano-Fe3O4 on the soil-microbe-plant system and establish a method to alleviate the harmful effects of MP accumulation in soils.

Enhanced Biogenic Sulfidation of Zero-Valent Iron in Columns: Implications for Promoting Dechlorination in Permeable Reactive Barriers

Biogenic sulfidation of zero-valent iron (ZVI) using sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) has shown enhanced dechlorination rates comparable to those produced by chemical sulfidation. However, controlling and sustaining biogenic sulfidation to enhance in situ dechlorination are poorly understood. Detailed interactions between SRB and ZVI were examined for 4 months in column experiments under enhanced biogenic sulfidation conditions. SRB proliferation and changes in ZVI surface properties were characterized along the flow paths. The results show that ZVI can stimulate SRB activity by removing excessive free sulfide (S2-), in addition to lowering reduction potential. ZVI also hinders downgradient movement of SRB via electrostatic repulsion, restricting SRB presence near the upgradient interface. Dissolved organic carbon (e.g., >2.2 mM) was essential for intense biogenic sulfidation in ZVI columns. The presence of SRB in the upgradient zone appeared to promote the formation of iron polysulfides. Biogenic FeSx deposition increased the S content on ZVI surfaces ∼3-fold, corresponding to 3-fold and 2-fold improvements in the trichloroethylene degradation rate and electron efficiency in batch tests. Elucidation of SRB and ZVI interactions enhances sustained sulfidation in ZVI permeable reactive barrier.

Concentration-Dependent Layer Exfoliation of Black Phosphorus by Human Serum Albumin and Its Corresponding Biocompatibility Change

Layered black phosphorus (LBP) is drawing increasing attention because of its excellent potential in biomedical applications. Properties and bioeffects of LBP depend on its layer number (LN). However, the variation of LN during applications, especially in organisms, is largely unknown. Herein, LBP is found to be exfoliated by human serum albumin (HSA) after the formation of protein coronas. The sorption of HSA on LBP exhibits multiple intermediate equilibrium and size-dependent capacity and is distinguished from traditional multilayer sorption. The loss of LN for LBP increases with the increase of HSA concentrations, e.g., 2, 4, and 6 layers of LBP are exfoliated at 35, 135, and 550 mg/L HSA, respectively. The energy distribution shows that at low HSA concentrations, exfoliation is mainly driven by electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions. With middle or high HSA concentrations, exfoliation is mainly driven by p-π or hydrophobic interactions, respectively. Layer exfoliation causes the continuous emergence of an unsaturated LBP surface available for adsorbing further HSA, breaking previous sorption saturations. The complete exfoliation of LBP weakens cytotoxicity and promotes internalization to the A-549 cell line compared with pristine or less exfoliated LBP. This finding unveils the exfoliation mechanism of proteins toward LBP and is of benefit to evaluating application performance and biosafety of LBP.

Insights into the enzymatic degradation of DNA expedited by typical perfluoroalkyl acids

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are considered forever chemicals, gaining increasing attention for their hazardous impacts. However, the ecological effects of PFAAs remain unclear. Environmental DNA (eDNA), as the environmental gene pool, is often collected for evaluating the ecotoxicological effects of pollutants. In this study, we found that all PFAAs investigated, including perfluorohexanoic acid, perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorononanoic acid, and perfluorooctane sulfonate, even at low concentrations (0.02 and 0.05 mg/L), expedited the enzymatic degradation of DNA in a nonlinear dose-effect relationship, with DNA degradation fragment sizes being lower than 1,000 bp and 200 bp after 15 and 30 min of degradation, respectively. This phenomenon was attributed to the binding interaction between PFAAs and AT bases in DNA via groove binding. van der Waals force (especially dispersion force) and hydrogen bonding are the main binding forces. DNA binding with PFAAs led to decreased base stacking and right-handed helicity, resulting in loose DNA structure exposing more digestion sites for degrading enzymes, and accelerating the enzymatic degradation of DNA. The global ecological risk evaluation results indicated that PFAA contamination could cause medium and high molecular ecological risk in 497 samples from 11 contamination-hot countries (such as the USA, Canada, and China). The findings of this study show new insights into the influence of PFAAs on the environmental fates of biomacromolecules and reveal the hidden molecular ecological effects of PFAAs in the environment.

Aging characteristics of degradable and non-biodegradable microplastics and their adsorption mechanism for sulfonamides

As emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics (ATs) became a research hotspot in recent years. To evaluate the carrier effect of degradable and non-biodegradable MPs in the aquatic environment, the adsorption behaviors of polyamide (PA) and polylactic acid (PLA) towards two sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) were investigated. Both chemical and photo-aging were used to handle the virgin MPs. Compared with PA, PLA was aged more drastically, showing the obvious grooves, notches and folds. However, due to the higher temperature during chemical aging, the tiny KPLA (PLA aged by K2S2O8) particles were agglomerated and the specific surface area was reduced to nearly 95 %. For PA, the oxidation of chemical aging was stronger than photo-aging. After aging, the hydrophilicity and polarity of MPs increased. In the adsorption experiments, the adsorption capacity of PA towards SAs was 1.7 times higher than that of PLA. Aging process enabled the adsorption capacity of PLA increased 1.22-3.18 times. Overall, the adsorption capacity of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by both MPs was superior to sulfamerazine (SMR). These results would help to understand the carrier effects and potential ecological risks of MPs towards co-existing contaminants.

Green synthesis of zero valent iron using tannins to activate persulfate for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Majority zero-valent iron (ZVI) materials are prepared by reducing agents in liquid phase, resulting in the high environmental pollution and poor particle size distribution uniformity. Therefore, this study employed a green synthesis method to prepare ZVI. Tannins (TA) with phenolic hydroxyl groups that are characterized by strong reducing capacity were employed to synthesize ZVI (TA@ZVI). The dispersity and stability of ZVI was improved by TA, which inhibited the agglomeration of ZVI. Meanwhile, the specific surface area of TA@ZVI was higher than chemical prepared ZVI, increasing the reactive sites. The organic matter components enriched on TA could promote the adsorption of pollutants and complex with Fe(II/III) to enhance the reactivity of TA@ZVI. Also, the polyphenol structure in TA was oxidized to quinone, which facilitated electron transport. In order further test the performance of TA@ZVI, SMX was chosen as a target pollutant to study the oxidative degradation performance of TA@ZVI. SO4•- degraded about 16.4%-25.5% SMX and •OH degraded about 49.8%-63.9% SMX in the pH range of 4-6 while •OH played a dominant role in the neutral and alkaline conditions. Moreover, the presence of TA reduced Fe(III) to Fe(II) and promoted the release of Fe(II), providing a continuous source of •OH for the oxidative degradation of SMX. Besides, the conversion of Fe(II/III) was accelerated due to TA, which delayed the formation of passivation layer. Thus, TA enhanced the antioxidant capacity of ZVI. Generally, this study provided an environmental-friendly technology to synthesize and improve the reactivity of ZVI.

Nanoscale sulfur alleviates silver nanoparticle toxicity and improves seed and oil yield in Soybean (Glycine max)

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are commonly used in many commercial products due to their antimicrobial properties, and their significant exposure in agricultural systems is anticipated. AgNPs accumulation in soil and subsequent uptake by plants can be harmful to plant growth and exposure to animals and humans through the food chain is a major concern. This study evaluated the potential protective role of nanosulfur (NS) and bulk sulfur (BS) at 200 and 400 mg/kg soil application in alleviating silver nanoparticle (AgNPs; 32 and 64 mg/kg) phytotoxicity to soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.]. The treatments were added in the soil before soybean transplantation; growth, yield, nutrient, and silver accumulation were measured in the shoot, root, and seeds. Exposure to AgNPs significantly affected plant growth and yield, reducing nodule weight by 40%, fresh shoot weight by 66%, and seed yield by 68% when compared to controls. However, nanosulfur application in soil alleviated AgNPs toxicity, and importantly, this impact was nanoscale specific at the higher concentration because the benefits of corresponding bulk sulfur (BS) treatments were marginal. Specifically, nanosulfur at 400 mg/kg significantly increased seed yield (∼3-fold more than AgNP at 64 mg/kg) and shoot biomass (2.6-fold more than AgNP at 64 mg/kg) upon co-exposure with AgNPs, essentially alleviating AgNPs toxicity. Moreover, NS increased nodule mass by 3.5 times compared to AgNPs-treated plants, which was 170% greater than the Ag- and NS-free controls. Plants treated with NS with AgNPs co-exposure accumulated significantly less Ag in the shoots (∼80% reduction) and roots (∼95% reduction); no Ag contents were detected in seeds. These findings demonstrate the potential of sulfur, especially NS, as a sustainable soil amendment to reduce the accumulation and toxicity of AgNPs and as a valuable nano-enabled strategy to promote food safety and security.

Nanoscale ZnO Improves the Amino Acids and Lipids in Tomato Fruits and the Subsequent Assimilation in a Simulated Human Gastrointestinal Tract Model

With the widespread use of nanoenabled agrochemicals, it is essential to evaluate the food safety of nanomaterials (NMs)-treated vegetable crops in full life cycle studies as well as their potential impacts on human health. Tomato seedlings were foliarly sprayed with 50 mg/L ZnO NMs, including ZnO quantum dots (QDs) and ZnO nanoparticles once per week over 11 weeks. The foliar sprayed ZnO QDs increased fruit dry weight and yield per plant by 39.1% and 24.9, respectively. It also significantly increased the lycopene, amino acids, Zn, B, and Fe in tomato fruits by 40.5%, 15.1%, 44.5%, 76.2%, and 12.8%, respectively. The tomato fruit metabolome of tomatoes showed that ZnO NMs upregulated the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and sphingolipid metabolism and elevated the levels of linoleic and arachidonic acids. The ZnO NMs-treated tomato fruits were then digested in a human gastrointestinal tract model. The results of essential mineral release suggested that the ZnO QDs treatment increased the bioaccessibility of K, Zn, and Cu by 14.8-35.1% relative to the control. Additionally, both types of ZnO NMs had no negative impact on the α-amylase, pepsin, and trypsin activities. The digested fruit metabolome in the intestinal fluid demonstrated that ZnO NMs did not interfere with the normal process of human digestion. Importantly, ZnO NMs treatments increased the glycerophospholipids, carbohydrates, amino acids, and peptides in the intestinal fluids of tomato fruits. This study suggests that nanoscale Zn can be potentially used to increase the nutritional value of vegetable crops and can be an important tool to sustainably increase food quality and security.

Root Exposure of Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4) Modulates Metabolite Profile and Endophytic Bacterial Community to Alleviate Cadmium- and Arsenate-Induced Phytotoxicity to Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

To investigate the mechanisms by which g-C3N4 alleviates metal(loid)-induced phytotoxicity, rice seedlings were exposed to 100 and 250 mg/kg graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with or without coexposure to 10 mg/kg Cd and 50 mg/kg As for 30 days. Treatment with 250 mg/kg g-C3N4 significantly increased shoot and root fresh weight by 22.4-29.9%, reduced Cd and As accumulations in rice tissues by 20.6-26.6%, and elevated the content of essential nutrients (e.g., K, S, Mg, Cu, and Zn) compared to untreated controls. High-throughput sequencing showed that g-C3N4 treatment increased the proportion of plant-growth-promoting endophytic bacteria, including Streptomyces, Saccharimonadales, and Thermosporothrix, by 0.5-3.30-fold; these groups are known to be important to plant nutrient assimilation, as well as metal(loid) resistance and bioremediation. In addition, the population of Deinococcus was decreased by 72.3%; this genus is known to induce biotransformation As(V) to As(III). Metabolomics analyses highlighted differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) involved in the metabolism of tyrosine metabolism, pyrimidines, and purines, as well as phenylpropanoid biosynthesis related to Cd/As-induced phytotoxicity. In the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway, the increased expression of 4-coumarate (1.13-fold) and sinapyl alcohol (1.26-fold) triggered by g-C3N4 coexposure with Cd or As played a critical role in promoting plant growth and enhancing rice resistance against metal(loid) stresses. Our findings demonstrate the potential of g-C3N4 to enhance plant growth and minimize the Cd/As-induced toxicity in rice and provide a promising nanoenabled strategy for remediating heavy metal(loid)-contaminated soil.

Capability of phytoremediation of glyphosate in environment by Vulpia myuros

Glyphosate is an herbicide extensively used worldwide that can remain in the soil. Phytoremediation to decontaminate polluted water or soil requires a plant that can accumulate the target compound. Vulpia myuros is an annual fescue that can be used as a heavy mental phytoremediation strategy. Recently, it has been used to intercrop with tea plant to prohibit the germination and growth of other weeds in tea garden. In order to know whether it can be used an decontaminating glyphosate' plant in water or soil, in this study, glyphosate degradation behavior was investigated in Vulpia myuros cultivated in a hydroponic system. The results showed that the concentration of glyphosate in the nutrient solution decreased from 43.09 μg mL-1 to 0.45 μg mL-1 in 30 days and that 99% of the glyphosate molecules were absorbed by V. myuros. The contents of glyphosate in the roots reached the maximum (224.33 mg kg-1) on day 1 and then decreased. After 3 days, the content of glyphosate in the leaves reached the highest value (215.64 mg kg-1), while it decreased to 156.26 mg kg-1 in the roots. The dissipation dynamics of glyphosate in the whole hydroponic system fits the first-order kinetic model C = 455.76e-0.21 t, with a half-life of 5.08 days. Over 30 days, 80% of the glyphosate was degraded. The contents of the glyphosate metabolite amino methyl phosphoric acid (AMPA), ranged from 0.103 mg kg-1 on day 1-0.098 mg kg-1 on day 30, not changing significantly over time. The Croot/solution, Cleaf/solution and Cleaf/root were used to express the absorption, transfer, and distribution of glyphosate in V. myuros. These results indicated that glyphosate entered into the root system through free diffusion, which was influenced by both the log Kow and the concentration of glyphosate in the nutrient solution, and that glyphosate was either easily transferred to the leaves through the transpiration stream, accumulated, or degraded. The degradation of glyphosate in V. myuros indicated that it has potential as a remediating plant for environmental restoration.

Response of peanut plant and soil N-fixing bacterial communities to conventional and biodegradable microplastics

Microplastics (MPs) occur and distribute widely in agroecosystems, posing a potential threat to soil-plant systems. However, little is known about their effects on legumes and N-fixing microbes. Here, we explored the effects of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene (PS), and polylactic acid (PLA) on the growth of peanuts and soil N-fixing bacterial communities. All MPs treatments showed no phytotoxic effects on plant biomass, and PS and PLA even increased plant height, especially at the high dose. All MPs changed soil NO3--N and NH4+-N contents and the activities of urease and FDAse. Particularly, high-dose PLA decreased soil NO3--N content by 97% and increased soil urease activity by 104%. In most cases, MPs negatively affected plant N content, and high-dose PLA had the most pronounced effects. All MPs especially PLA changed soil N-fixing bacterial community structure. Symbiotic N-fixer Rhizoboales were greatly enriched by high-dose PLA, accompanied by the emergence of root nodulation, which may represent an adaptive strategy for peanuts to overcome N deficiency caused by PLA MPs pollution. Our findings indicate that MPs can change peanut-N fixing bacteria systems in a type- and dose-dependent manner, and biodegradable MPs may have more profound consequences for N biogeochemical cycling than traditional MPs.

Cation-π mechanism promotes the adsorption of humic acid on polystyrene nanoplastics to differently affect their aggregation: Evidence from experimental characterization and DFT calculation

Multiple water-chemistry factors determine nanoplastics aggregation and thus change their bioavailability and ecological risks in natural aquatic environments. However, the dominant factors and their interactive mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) showed greater colloidal stability in Li Lake water compared to ultrapure water. The RDA and PARAFAC results suggested that dissolved organic carbon, humic acid (HA) in particular, Ca2+, and pH are critical factors influencing PSNPs aggregation. Batch experiments showed that the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) of PSNPs was increased with pH increase; HA increased the CCC of PSNPs in NaCl by 2.6-fold but decreased that in CaCl2 by 1.8-fold. Moreover, cations increased the adsorption of HA on PSNPs. The DFT results suggested that HA-cations complexes (EAE = -1.10 eV and -0.51 eV for HA-Ca2+ and HA-Na+, respectively) but not HA alone (EAE = -0.33 eV) are the main scenarios for their adsorption on PSNPs, and a cation-π mechanism between PSNPs and HA-cations complexes dominates PSNPs aggregation in this scenario. The findings are significant for better understanding the environmental process and fate of nanoplastics in aquatic environments. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Nanoplastics are kinds of emerging contaminants. Nanoplastic aggregation determines their bioavailability and toxic risks to ecological health. Herein, the hydrodynamic sizes of PSNPs in local Li Lake water was tested and a redundancy analysis was performed to examine the key water-chemistry factors driving PSNPs aggregation. Moreover, the mechanisms in PSNPs aggregation driven by multiple dominant water-chemistry factors including cations, pH, and DOC were firstly unveiled by combining experimental characterization and theoretical computations. This work improves our understanding of the environmental fate of nanoplastics and provides a theoretical basis for the risk assessment and control of nanoplastics in real aquatic environments.

Influence of humate on the degradation of chloramphenicol by sulfidated ferrihydrite under dynamic anoxic/oxic environments: A combined DFT calculation and experimental study

Sulfidation of ferrihydrite is known to affect the degradation of contaminants, but little was known about the role of natural organic matter (NOM) in antibiotics degradation by sufidated ferrihydrite under redox-dynamic conditions. Here, a typical antibiotic (i.e., chloramphenicol (CAP)) was chosen to investigate how it redistributed when ferrihydrite reacted with reductive dissolved sulfide (S(-II)dis) in the presence of humate (HA) under dynamic anoxic/oxic environments. In anoxic environments, HA enhanced CAP reduction via dichlorination or decarboxylation by sufidated ferrihydrite in the low concentration of S(-II), while HA inhibited CAP reduction in the high concentration of S(-II) by the contribution of S(-II) and surface-bound Fe(II) (Fe(II)adsorbed). When the conditions transited from anoxic to oxic, remaining CAP molecules in solutions continued undergoing oxidative degradation to form the succinic acid, hexanedioic acid, CO2, and H2O by the attack of ·OH. Meantime, HA was adsorbed to ferrihydrite to block autocatalytic Fe(II) oxidation, which inhibited the generation of ·OH under oxic conditions. Additionally, from the density function theory (DFT) calculation and intermediate products analysis obtained from HPLC-MS/MS, two oxidative degradation pathways of CAP during the oxidation of sulfidated ferrihydrite have been proposed. Collectively, the framework elucidated different roles of HA in CAP elimination and environmental behavior of ferrihydrite when exposed to the S(-II) under the dynamic redox conditions.

Trophic transfer of nanomaterials and their effects on high-trophic-level predators

Nanotechnology offers great opportunities for numerous sectors in society. One important challenge in sustainable nanotechnology is the potential of trophic transfer of nanomaterials (NMs), which may lead to unintentional impacts on environmental and human health. Here, we highlight the key advances that have been made in recent 15 years with respect to trophic transfer of heterogeneous NMs, including metal-based NMs, carbon-based NMs and nanoplastics, across various aquatic and terrestrial food chains. Particle number-based trophic transfer factors (TTFs), rather than the variable mass-based TTFs, capture the particle-specific transfer, for which NMs exhibit dynamic and complex biotransformation (e.g., dissolution, sulfidation, reduction, and corona formation). Trophic transfer of NMs has toxicological significance to predators at molecular (e.g., increased oxidative stress and modified metabolites), physiological (e.g., feeding inhibition) and population (e.g., reproduction inhibition) levels. However, linking NM exposure and toxicity remains a challenge, partly due to the dynamic biotransformation along the food chain. Although NMs have been used to increase crop yield in agriculture, they can exert detrimental impacts on crop yield and modify crop quality, depending on NMs type, exposure dose, and crop species, with unknown consequences to human health via crop consumption. Given this information, we describe the challenges and opportunities in understanding the significance of NMs trophic transfer to develop more sustainable, effective and safer nanotechnology.

Lanthanum Silicate Nanomaterials Enhance Sheath Blight Resistance in Rice: Mechanisms of Action and Soil Health Evaluation

In the current study, foliar spray with lanthanum (La) based nanomaterials (La10Si6O27 nanorods, La10Si6O27 nanoparticle, La(OH)3 nanorods, and La2O3 nanoparticle) suppressed the occurrence of sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani) in rice. The beneficial effects were morphology-, composition-, and concentration-dependent. Foliar application of La10Si6O27 nanorods (100 mg/L) yielded the greatest disease suppression, significantly decreasing the disease severity by 62.4% compared with infected controls; this level of control was 2.7-fold greater than the commercially available pesticide (Thifluzamide). The order of efficacy was as follows: La10Si6O27 nanorods > La10Si6O27 nanoparticle > La(OH)3 nanorods > La2O3 nanoparticle. Mechanistically, (1) La10Si6O27 nanorods had greater bioavailability, slower dissolution, and simultaneous Si nutrient benefits; (2) transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that La10Si6O27 nanorods simultaneously strengthened rice systemic acquired resistance, physical barrier formation, and antioxidative systems. Additionally, La10Si6O27 nanorods improved rice yield by 35.4% and promoted the nutritional quality of the seeds as compared with the Thifluzamide treatment. A two-year La10Si6O27 nanorod exposure had no effect on soil health based on the evaluated chemical, physical, and biological soil properties. These findings demonstrate that La based nanomaterials can serve as an effective and sustainable strategy to safeguard crops and highlight the importance of nanomaterial composition and morphology in terms of optimizing benefit.

Polyethylene microplastics impede the innate immune response by disrupting the extracellular matrix and signaling transduction

Microplastics (MPs) can accumulate in animal organs. Numerous studies have linked MPs with immune system. However, the impact of MPs on immune response remains unclear. This study examined the innate immune response of mice exposed to 5 μm MPs. In the lipopolysaccharide challenge, mice treated with MPs exhibited lower levels of serum immune factors and activated immune cells. MPs disrupted immune-related receptors and cause dysfunction in cell signal transduction within the liver and spleen. Proteomic analysis revealed that MPs impede the activation of serum immune-related signals. In addition, the tissue section imaging exhibited a significant enrichment of MPs in the extracellular matrix (ECM), consistent with the ECM dysfunction and immune receptor suppression. Therefore, our data suggest excessive MPs accumulation in ECM inhibits cell signaling pathways, thereby suppressing the activation of immune responses. We propose the biotoxicity of MPs is partly through the MP disruption of ECM (MPDEM).

Cations facilitate sulfidation of zero-valent iron by elemental sulfur: Mechanism and dechlorination application

The solid-solid reaction of microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI) with elemental sulfur (S0) in water can form sulfidated mZVI (S-mZVI) with high reactivity and selectivity. However, the inherent passivation layer of mZVI hinders the sulfidation. In this study, we demonstrate that ionic solutions of Me-chloride (Me: Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, Na+ and Fe2+) can accelerate the sulfidation of mZVI by S0. The S0 with S/Fe molar ratio of 0.1 was fully reacted with mZVI in all solutions to form unevenly distributed FeS species on S-mZVIs as confirmed by SEM-EDX and XANES characterization. The cations depassivated the mZVI surface by driving the proton release from the surface site (FeOH) and resulting in localized acidification. The probe reaction test (tetrachloride dechlorination) and open circuit potential (EOCP) measurement demonstrated that Mg2+ was most efficient in depassivating the mZVI and therefore promoting sulfidation. The decrease of surface proton for hydrogenolysis on the S-mZVI synthesized in MgCl2 solution also inhibited the formation of cis-1,2-dichloroethylene by 14-79% compared to other S-mZVIs during trichloroethylene dechlorination. In addition, the synthesized S-mZVIs exhibited the highest reduction capacity reported so far. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the facile on-site sulfidation of mZVI by S0 with cation-rich natural waters for sustainable remediation of contaminated sites.

Detection, distribution and environmental risk of metal-based nanoparticles in a coastal bay

Metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) attract increasing concerns because of their adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. However, their environmental concentrations and size distributions are largely unknown, especially in marine environments. In this work, environmental concentrations and risks of metal-based NPs were examined in Laizhou Bay (China) using single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS). First, separation and detection approaches of metal-based NPs were optimized for seawater and sediment samples with high recoveries of 96.7% and 76.3%, respectively. Spatial distribution results showed that Ti-based NPs had the highest average concentrations for all the 24 stations (seawater, 1.78 × 108 particles/L; sediments, 7.75 × 1012 particles/kg), followed by Zn-, Ag-, Cu-, and Au-based NPs. For all the NPs in seawater, the highest abundance occurred around the Yellow River Estuary, resulting from a huge input from Yellow River. In addition, the sizes of metal-based NPs were generally smaller in sediments than those in seawater (22, 20, 17, and 16 of 22 stations for Ag-, Cu-, Ti-, and Zn-based NPs, respectively). Based on the toxicological data of engineered NPs, predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) to marine species were calculated as Ag at 72.8 ng/L < ZnO at 2.66 µg/L < CuO at 7.83 µg/L < TiO2 at 72.0 µg/L, and the actual PNECs of the detected metal-based NPs may be higher due to the possible presence of natural NPs. Station 2 (around the Yellow River Estuary) was assessed as "high risk" for Ag- and Ti-based NPs with risk characterization ratio (RCR) values of 1.73 and 1.66, respectively. In addition, RCRtotal values for all the four metal-based NPs were calculated to fully assess the co-exposure environmental risk, with 1, 20, and 1 of 22 stations as "high risk", "medium risk", and "low risk", respectively. This study helps to better understand the risks of metal-based NPs in marine environments.

Mechanistic investigation of enhanced bacterial soft rot resistance in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) with elemental sulfur nanomaterials

Crop diseases significantly threaten global food security and will worsen with a changing climate. Elemental sulfur nanomaterials (S NMs) were used to suppress bacterial pathogen Pectobacterium carotovorum on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Foliar application with S NMs at 10-100 mg/L statistically decreased the occurrence of bacterial soft rot, where 100 mg/L exhibited the best performance with alleviating disease severity by 94.1 % as relative to infected controls. The disease suppression efficiency of S based materials (100 mg/L) and a conventional pesticide (thiophanate-methyl) followed the order of S NMs ≈ pesticide > S bulk particles (BPs) > sulfate. The disease control efficiency of S NMs was 1.33- and 3.20-fold that of S BPs and sulfate, respectively, and the shoot and root biomass with S NMs was 1.25- and 1.17-fold that of the pesticide treated plants. Mechanistically, S NMs (1) triggered jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) mediated systematic induced resistance and systemic acquired resistance, thereby upregulating pathogenesis-related gene expression (enhanced by 29.3-259.7 %); (2) enhanced antioxidative enzyme activity and antioxidative gene expression (improved by 67.5-326.6 %), thereby alleviating the oxidative stress; and (3) exhibited direct in vivo antibacterial activity. Metabolomics analysis demonstrated that S NMs also promoted the tricarboxylic acid cycle and increased SA and JA metabolite biosynthesis. Moreover, S NMs application increased nutritive quality of lettuce by 20.8-191.7 %. These findings demonstrate that S NMs have potential to manage crop disease, thereby reducing the environmental burden due to decreasing use of conventional pesticides.

Aloe Vera Extract Gel-Biosynthesized Selenium Nanoparticles Enhance Disease Resistance in Lettuce by Modulating the Metabolite Profile and Bacterial Endophytes Composition

The use of nanotechnology to suppress crop diseases has attracted significant attention in agriculture. The present study investigated the antifungal mechanism by which aloe vera extract gel-biosynthesized (AVGE) selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) suppressed Fusarium-induced wilt disease in lettuce (Lactuca sativa). AVGE Se NPs were synthesized by utilizing sodium selenite as a Se source and AVGE as a biocompatible capping and reducing agent. Over 21 d, 2.75% of total AVGE Se NPs was dissolved into Se ions, which was more than 8-fold greater than that of bare Se NPs (0.34%). Upon exposure to soil applied AVGE Se NPs at 50 mg/kg, fresh shoot biomass was significantly increased by 61.6 and 27.8% over the infected control and bare Se NPs, respectively. As compared to the infected control, the shoot levels of citrate, isocitrate, succinate, malate, and 2-oxo-glutarate were significantly upregulated by 0.5-3-fold as affected by both Se NPs. In addition, AVGE Se NPs significantly increased the shoot level of khelmarin D, a type of coumarin, by 4.40- and 0.71-fold over infected controls and bare Se NPs, respectively. Additionally, AVGE Se NPs showed greater upregulation of jasmonic acid and downregulation of abscisic acid content relative to bare Se NPs in diseased shoots. Moreover, the diversity of bacterial endophytes was significantly increased by AVGE Se NPs, with the values of Shannon index 40.2 and 9.16% greater over the infected control and bare Se NPs. Collectively, these findings highlight the significant potential of AVGE Se NPs as an effective and biocompatible strategy for nanoenabled sustainable crop protection.

Micro/nanoscale bone char alleviates cadmium toxicity and boosts rice growth via positively altering the rhizosphere and endophytic microbial community

This present study investigated pork bone-derived biochar as a promising amendment to reduce Cd accumulation and alleviate Cd-induced oxidative stress in rice. Micro/nanoscale bone char (MNBC) pyrolyzed at 400 °C and 600 °C was synthesized and characterized before use. The application rates for MNBCs were set at 5 and 25 g·kg^-1 and the Cd exposure concentration was 15 mg·kg^-1. MNBCs increased rice biomass by 15.3-26.0% as compared to the Cd-alone treatment. Both types of MNBCs decreased the bioavailable Cd content by 27.4-54.8%; additionally, the acid-soluble Cd fraction decreased by 10.0-12.3% relative to the Cd alone treatment. MNBC significantly reduced the cell wall Cd content by 50.4-80.2% relative to the Cd-alone treatment. TEM images confirm the toxicity of Cd to rice cells and that MNBCs alleviated Cd-induced damage to the chloroplast ultrastructure. Importantly, the addition of MNBCs decreased the abundance of heavy metal tolerant bacteria, Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi, by 29.6-41.1% in the rhizosphere but had less impact on the endophytic microbial community. Overall, our findings demonstrate the significant potential of MNBC as both a soil amendment for heavy metal-contaminated soil remediation and for crop nutrition in sustainable agriculture.

Mechanistic Understanding toward the Maternal Transfer of Nanoplastics in Daphnia magna

Nanoplastics induce transgenerational toxicity to aquatic organisms, but the specific pathways for the maternal transfer of nanoplastics remain unclear. Herein, laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) observations identified the specific pathways on the maternal transfer of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics (25 nm) in Daphnia magna. In vivo and in vitro experiments showed that PS nanoplastics could enter the brood chamber through its opening and then be internalized to eggs and embryos using LSCM imaging (pathway I). In addition, PS nanoplastics were observed in the oocytes of the ovary, demonstrating gut-ovary-oocyte transfer (pathway II). Furthermore, label-free hyperspectral imaging was used to detect the distribution of nanoplastics in the embryos and ovary of Daphnia, again confirming the maternal transfer of nanoplastics through the two pathways mentioned above. The contribution from pathway I (88%) was much higher than pathway II (12%) based on nanoflow cytometry quantification. In addition, maternal transfer in Daphnia depended on the particle size of PS nanoplastics, as demonstrated by using LSCM and hyperspectral imaging. Unlike 25 nm nanoplastics, 50 nm PS nanoplastics could enter the brood chamber and the eggs/embryos (pathway I), but were not detected in the ovary (pathway II); 100 nm PS nanoplastics were difficult to be internalized by eggs/embryos and could not enter the ovary either. These findings provide insight into the maternal transfer mechanisms of nanoplastics in Daphnia, and are critical for better understanding the transgenerational toxicity of aquatic organisms.

Adverse effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on beneficial gut bacteria and host health based on untargeted metabolomics analysis

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a common additive in foods, medicines, and personal care products. In recent years, nano-scale particles in TiO2 additives have been an increasing concern due to their potential adverse effects on human health, especially gut health. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs, 30 nm) on beneficial gut bacteria and host response from a metabolomics perspective. In the in vitro study, four bacterial strains, including Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus gasseri, Bifidobacterium animalis, and Bifidobacterium longum were subjected to the treatment of TiO2 NPs. The growth kinetics, cell viability, cell membrane permeability, and metabolomics response were determined. TiO2 NPs at the concentration of 200 μg/mL showed inhibitory effects on the growth of all four strains. The confocal microscope results indicated that the growth inhibitory effects could be associated with cell membrane damage caused by TiO2 NPs to the bacterial strains. Metabolomics analysis showed that TiO2 NPs caused alterations in multiple metabolic pathways of gut bacteria, such as tryptophan and arginine metabolism, which were demonstrated to play crucial roles in regulating gut and host health. In the in vivo study, mice were fed with TiO2 NPs (0.1 wt% in diet) for 8 weeks. Mouse urine was collected for metabolomics analysis and the tryptophan metabolism pathway was also significantly affected in TiO2 NPs-fed mice. Moreover, four neuroprotective metabolites were significantly reduced in both in vitro bacteria and in vivo urine samples. Overall, this study provides insights into the potential adverse effects of TiO2 NPs on gut bacteria and the metabolic responses of both bacteria and host. Further research is needed to understand the causality between gut bacteria composition and the metabolism pathway, which is critical to monitor the gut-microbiome mediated metabolome changes in toxicological assessment of food components.

Development potential of nanoenabled agriculture projected using machine learning

The controllability and targeting of nanoparticles (NPs) offer solutions for precise and sustainable agriculture. However, the development potential of nanoenabled agriculture remains unknown. Here, we build an NP-plant database containing 1,174 datasets and predict (R² higher than 0.8 for 13 random forest models) the response and uptake/transport of various NPs by plants using a machine learning approach. Multiway feature importance analysis quantitatively shows that plant responses are driven by the total NP exposure dose and duration and plant age at exposure, as well as the NP size and zeta potential. Feature interaction and covariance analysis further improve the interpretability of the model and reveal hidden interaction factors (e.g., NP size and zeta potential). Integration of the model, laboratory, and field data suggests that Fe₂O₃ NP application may inhibit bean growth in Europe due to low night temperatures. In contrast, the risks of oxidative stress are low in Africa because of high night temperatures. According to the prediction, Africa is a suitable area for nanoenabled agriculture. The regional differences and temperature changes make nanoenabled agriculture complicated. In the future, the temperature increase may reduce the oxidative stress in African bean and European maize induced by NPs. This study projects the development potential of nanoenabled agriculture using machine learning, although many more field studies are needed to address the differences at the country and continental scales.

Transfer of CeO2 nanoparticles between freshwater omnivorous organisms: Effect of feces and necrophagy

Transfer of CeO₂ engineered nanoparticles (NPs) through feces was investigated between two omnivorous organisms, red crucian carp (Carassius auratus red var.) and crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Upon water exposure (5 mg/L, 7 days), the highest bioaccumulation was observed in carp gills (5.95 μg Ce/g D.W.) and crayfish hepatopancreas (648 μg Ce/g D.W.), with the bioconcentration factors (BCFs) at 0.45 and 3.61, respectively. In addition, 97.4% and 73.0% of ingested Ce were excreted by carp and crayfish, respectively. The feces of carp and crayfish were collected and fed to crayfish and carp, respectively. After feces exposure, bioconcentration was observed in both carp (BCF, 3.00) and crayfish (BCF, 4.56). After feeding crayfish with carp bodies (1.85 μg Ce/g D.W.), CeO₂ NPs were not biomagnified (biomagnification factor, 0.28). Upon water exposure, CeO₂ NPs were transformed into Ce(III) in the feces of both carp (24.6%) and crayfish (13.6%), and the transformation was stronger after subsequent feces exposure (100% and 73.7%, respectively). This research highlights the importance of feces exposure on the transfer and fate of NPs in aquatic ecosystems.
