Abstract
Our study aims to demonstrate the experience of analyzing fully or partially charred corpses to offer a proper implementation protocol for determining the cause of death. In this study, we present a total of 103 cases obtained from the University of Rome La Sapienza and the University of Pisa archives. All cases were classified based on the extent and severity of burns using a visual method. We divided all cases into two groups. The first group included grade I-II burns (21 cases) without the need for identification. The second group (82 cases) included injuries worse than grade burns II, so all cases were analyzed using an analytical method. For each case, we have documented which of the following analyses have been used and the corresponding findings: inspection, autopsy examination, imaging examination, genetic and toxicological examinations, and histological examination. The results describe the main diagnostic findings and show that only the application of all the above systematic analyses can provide greater accuracy and reliability in describing the causes of death or solving problems, such as identification. In conclusion, we propose an available protocol that defines the main steps of a complete diagnostic pathway that pathologists should follow daily in studying charred bodies.

Abstract
Third-degree scald, causing serious tissue destruction with continuous pain, easily leads to microbial infections and delayed wound healing. Therefore, a multifunctional treatment is attractive for seriously damaged tissue. Herein, carboxymethyl chitosan-coordinated argentum (Ag-CMC) was synthesized via a complexation method, and then the Ag+ release, antibacterial activity, biocompatibility, pain relief and wound healing properties of Ag-CMC were investigated in vitro and in vivo. The results revealed that Ag+ had interacted with carboxymethyl chitosan, containing approximately 1.2% of silver. The Ag-CMC (50-200 μg/mL) with Ag+ sustained release exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, drug-resistant E. coli, PA, MRSA and good biocompatibility with L929 cells. Furthermore, antibacterial and wound healing experiments demonstrated that Ag-CMC achieved an effective contraction rate of 90% after 28 days by accelerating re-epithelialization, regulating inflammation response, relieving pain and infections. Therefore, Ag-CMC is a safe multifunctional treatment for wound healing and infections.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungWährend sich heutzutage in westlichen Ländern erweiterte Suizide ganz überwiegend in (gescheiterten) Partnerbeziehungen ereignen, stellen Kindstötungen mit nachfolgendem Suizid eines Elternteils ein seltenes Ereignis dar. Vorgestellt wird der ungewöhnliche Fall eines versuchten Homizid-Suizides einer 36-jährigen Frau, die durch das Einbringen eines eingeschalteten Föhns in das Badewasser beabsichtigte, sich und ihre 7 Jahre alte Tochter zu töten. Während sich das Kind selbstständig aus der Wanne befreien und die Großeltern informieren konnte, wurde die Frau in benommenem Zustand von ihrem Vater vorgefunden. Beim Versuch, seine Tochter aus der Badewanne zu bergen, habe er einen Stromfluss verspürt. Bemerkenswerterweise haben alle 3 Personen ohne gesundheitlichen Schaden überlebt; sie wiesen keine Strommarken auf. Die ungewöhnliche Fallkonstellation, die elektrotechnischen Aspekte und die psychiatrische Vorgeschichte der Täterin, die zum Tatzeitpunkt unter dem Einfluss von Alkohol und eines sedierenden Mittels stand, werden unter Berücksichtigung der einschlägigen Literatur diskutiert.

Abstract
Scalds in the elderly are frequently associated with the use of a bathtub and a disturbed consciousness. Therefore, the total burn surface area is often high. The initial clinical presentation displays a stark erythema of the skin, which frequently does not represent the true depth. The aim of this study was to characterize and assess medical features and outcome of scalds sustained in the bathtub. We conducted a retrospective study at a burn intensive care unit (BICU) between 2011 and 2018. Medical features as well as the treatment in these patients were statistically analyzed. We identified 16 patients and divided them into two groups regarding survival and lethality. The mean total burn surface area was 37.50 ± 19.47%. In 81.25% of the patients, we found a previous history of neurological or psychiatric disorders. Dementia and alcohol abuse were the most common triggers for the trauma. The statistical analysis showed a significant difference for the ABSI-score and the presence of multi organ failure (P-value .0462, respectively, .0004). Erythematous skin areas tended to progress into full thickness burns. We, therefore, coined the term "lobster redness" for these regions. Scalds sustained in the bathtub are devastating injuries. Initial assessment can be misleading and might delay early necrectomy. The wounds request even more attention, if the injuries occurred due to unconsciousness because of the longer exposure to heat. Early necrectomy should be considered. A biopsy with histological workup can be useful. Furthermore, we recommend special safety precautions for neurologically and psychiatrically affected patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Mortality associated with hot tap water scalds remains significant, owing to a lack of up-to-date regulations on tap water temperature. We aimed to evaluate the effect of hot tap water scalds on patients admitted to our adult burn intensive care unit (BICU), and compare them to those with other scald types. METHODS We enrolled patients treated for scalds at the BICU of Cologne-Merheim Medical Center from 1989 to 2014, and retrospectively analyzed their age, sex-specific differences, characteristics, length of hospital stay, number of operations, and mortality. Patients were categorized into two groups: patients with hot tap water scalds and those with all other types of scalds. RESULTS A total of 333 patients were enrolled. In 23.4% (n=78) of the cases, the scalds were associated with hot tap water. Such injuries were more commonly observed in older men than women. Hot tap water scalds involved a significantly higher total burned surface area (TBSA) than other scalds, with TBSA values of 24.0% and 15.9% for men, and 21.8% and 10.9% for women, respectively. Hot tap water scald patients had a greater number of surgeries and longer BICU stays (27.8 days vs 9.1 days), and significantly higher mortality values (30.8% (n=24) vs 4.7% (n=12)) than those with the other scald types. CONCLUSIONS Hot water scalds are associated with large TBSAs, long stays in the BICU, and worse outcomes compared to the other scald types.

Abstract
In humans, most fatalities from slaughterer's guns are suicides committed by persons familiar with stunning devices. The great majority of cases accounts for shots to the head, especially the frontal region. Only a small number of two subsequent cranial shots from captive-bolt humane killers have been reported up to now. In the case presented by the authors, a suicide by simultaneous shots to the head fired from two different makes of captive-bolt guns (one of them having two separate outlets for the combustion gases in the muzzle plane, the other type having no additional openings) is described for the first time. One of the shooting devices remained in firm contact with the left hand and produced patterned staining from rust corresponding to the surface relief of the gun. The medicolegal and criminalistic aspects of this unique case are discussed with reference to the pertinent literature.
