Abstract
Inadequately managed solid organic waste generation poses a threat to the environment and human health globally. Biotransformation with the black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) is emerging as talent technology for solid waste management. However, there is a lack of understanding of whether BSFL can effectively suppress potential pathogenic microorganisms during management and the underlying mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the temporal variations of microorganisms in two common types of solid waste, i.e., kitchen waste (KW) and pig manure (PM). Natural composting and composting with BSFL under three different pH levels (pH 5, 7, and 9) were established to explore their impact on microbial communities in compost and the gut of BSFL. The results showed that the compost of kitchen waste and pig manure led to an increase in relative abundance of various potentially pathogenic bacteria. Temporal gradient analyses revealed that the most substantial reduction in the relative abundance and diversity of potentially pathogenic microorganisms occurred when the initial pH of both two wastes were adjusted to 7 upon the introduction of BSFL. Through network and pls-pm analysis, it was discovered that the gut microbiota of BSFL occupied an ecological niche in the compost, inhibiting the proliferation of potentially pathogenic microorganisms. This study has revealed the potential of BSFL in reducing public health risks during the solid waste management process, providing robust support for sustainable waste management.

Abstract
Host-associated microbial communities are an important determinant of individual fitness and have recently been highlighted as one of the factors influencing the success of invasive species. Invasive hosts introduce their microbes into the new environment, and then both the host and its associated microbes enter into a series of interactions with the native macroscopic and microscopic biota. As these processes are largely unexplored, we aimed to compare the exoskeletal microbial communities of co-occurring and phylogenetically related crayfish: the native narrow-clawed crayfish Pontastacus leptodactylus and the invasive signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus from the recently invaded Korana River, Croatia. The results of high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing showed that the exoskeletal microbiome of both species is very diverse, significantly influenced by the local environment and dominated by low abundance bacterial families from the phylum Proteobacteria. Furthermore, the exoskeletal microbiomes of the crayfish species differed significantly in the composition and abundance of Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs), suggesting that they are to some extent shaped by species-specific intrinsic factors, despite sharing a common habitat. However, over 95% of the bacterial genera associated with the exoskeleton were detected in the exoskeleton samples of both native and invasive crayfish. We paid particular attention to two known crayfish pathogens, Aphanomyces astaci and Saprolegnia parasitica, and find that both species carry low amounts of both pathogens. On the side, we find that a non-standard ddPCR protocol outperforms standard qPCR test for A. astaci under low concentration conditions. Taken together, our results indicate the possibility of bidirectional mixing and homogenisation of exoskeleton microbiome. As such, they can serve as a baseline in future detangling of the processes that act together to shape the microbiomes of co-occuring native and invasive congeners during biological invasions.

Abstract
Introduction The mud crab, Scylla paramamosain, holds great commercial significance as a marine crustacean widely cultivated in the Indo-Pacific region. Understanding the core gut microbiota of aquatic animals is crucial for their overall health and growth, yet the core gut microbiota of mud crab remains poorly characterized. Methods In this study, we gathered gut samples from mud crabs across five locations within Sanmen Bay, China. Through the utilization of high-throughput sequencing, we delved into the composition of the gut microbial community and identified the core gut microbiome of mud crab. Results Our results demonstrate that the gut microbial diversity of mud crab did not exhibit significant variation among the five sampling sites, although there were some differences in community richness. At the phylum level, we identified 35 representative phyla, with Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Campilobacterota as the dominant phyla. Among the 815 representative genera, we discovered 19 core genera, which accounted for 65.45% of the total sequences. These core genera were distributed across 6 phyla, and among them, Photobacterium exhibited the highest average relative abundance. Discussion Photobacterium has probiotic activity and may play a crucial role in enhancing the immune response of the host and maintaining the diversity of the gut microbiota. Moreover, we observed a positive correlation between the relative abundance of core genera and the stability of the gut microbial community. Furthermore, our findings revealed distinct differences in gut microbial composition and specific taxa between the sexes of mud crab. These differences subsequently influenced the functionality of the gut microbial community. Overall, our investigation sheds light on the core gut microbiota of mud crab, emphasizing the importance of core gut microbial communities in maintaining the health and growth of these commercially significant marine crustaceans.

Abstract
Microplastics (MP) are a hazardous pollutant of global concern that threatens aquatic ecosystems and public health. We used the invasive, cosmopolitan, and environmentally versatile red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii as a model to study the effects of MP on the intestinal microbiome. Crayfish collected from the environment were compared with specimens exposed to recycled Polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) MP in feed (30%) for 96 h in the laboratory and a control group. We analyzed the 16S rRNA of the intestinal bacteria by PCR-DGGE and high-throughput sequencing. MP exposure caused dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota, with an increase in Alphaproteobacteria and Actinobacteria. We detected higher abundance of opportunistic genera such as Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Hydromonas, Pseudomonas, Gemmobacter, and Enterobacter on MP fed organisms. Moreover, MP exposure reduced the abundance of Clostridia and Bateroidetes, which are important for immune system development and pathogen prevention. Furthermore, MP exposure decreased the phenoloxidase (PO) immune response in crayfish. There was a significant difference in the richness of intestinal bacterial communities after consumption of food contaminated with MP, likely increasing the abundance of opportunistic bacteria in the intestinal microbiota. Our results suggest that MP alter the gut microbial composition and impair the health of P. clarkii.

Abstract
Gut microbiota is an essential determinant factor that drives the physiological, immunological, and metabolic functions of animals. A few meta-analysis studies identified crucial information about the gut microbiota of vertebrate animals in different habitats including fish while no report is yet available for the commercially cultured decapod crustaceans (DC). This meta-analysis investigated the gut microbiota of 11 commercially cultured DC species from five different groups-crab, crayfish, lobster, prawn, and shrimp to gain an overview of microbial diversity and composition and to find out core genera under two different host habitats: freshwater and saltwater. The analysis of 627 Illumina datasets from 25 published studies revealed selective patterns of diversity and compositional differences among groups and between freshwater and saltwater culture systems. The study found a salinity-dependent heterogeneous response of gut microbiota, specifically Vibrio in saltwater for white shrimp, a species that can be cultured with and without salt. Overall, the genera reared in freshwater showed higher diversity in the gut microbial communities than those reared in saltwater. An overwhelming abundance of Candidatus Bacilloplasma and Vibrio were identified for species cultured in freshwater and saltwater system, respectively and these two species were identified as the main core genera for nine out of 11 DC species, except freshwater prawn and river prawn. Together, these results demonstrate the effectiveness of the meta-analysis in identifying the robust and reproducible features of DC gut microbiota for different groups and host habitats. The diversity information curated here could be used as a reference for future studies to differentiate various DC species under two different rearing environments.

Abstract
Aquaculture is affected by numerous factors that may cause various health threats that have to be controlled by the most environmentally friendly approaches. In this context, prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics are frequently incorporated into organisms' feeding rations to ameliorate the health status of the host's intestine, enhancing its functionality and physiological performance, and to confront increasing antimicrobial resistance. The first step in this direction is the understanding of the complex microbiome system of the organism in order to administer the optimal supplement, in the best concentration, and in the correct way. In the present review, pre-, pro-, and synbiotics as aquaculture additives, together with the factors affecting gut microbiome in crayfish, are discussed, combined with their future prospective outcomes. Probiotics constitute non-pathogenic bacteria, mainly focused on organisms' energy production and efficient immune response; prebiotics constitute fiber indigestible by the host organism, which promote the preferred gastrointestinal tract microorganisms' growth and activity towards the optimum balance between the gastrointestinal and immune system's microbiota; whereas synbiotics constitute their combination as a blend. Among pro-, pre-, and synbiotics' multiple benefits are boosted immunity, increased resistance towards pathogens, and overall welfare promotion. Furthermore, we reviewed the intestinal microbiota abundance and composition, which are found to be influenced by a plethora of factors, including the organism's developmental stage, infection by pathogens, diet, environmental conditions, culture methods, and exposure to toxins. Intestinal microbial communities in crayfish exhibit high plasticity, with infections leading to reduced diversity and abundance. The addition of synbiotic supplementation seems to provide better results than probiotics and prebiotics separately; however, there are still conflicting results regarding the optimal concentration.

Abstract
The larvae of the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, are now attracting attention and becoming promising sources for aquafeed ingredient due to the nutritious substance. However, the introduction of a novel ingredient into the recipe may have unpredictable effects on the innate immune function and gut bacteria composition of crustaceans. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate how dietary black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) affected the antioxidant ability, innate immunity and gut microbiome of shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) fed with a practical diet, including the gene expression of Toll and immunodeficiency (IMD) pathways. Six experimental diets were formulated by replacing gradient levels of fish meal (0 %, 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 % and 50 %) based on a commercial shrimp diet. Four replicates of shrimp were fed different diets three times daily for 60 days. Growth performance linearly decreased with increasing BSFLM inclusion. Results of antioxidative enzyme activities and gene expression suggested that low dietary BSFLM levels activated the antioxidant capacity of shrimp, while dietary BSFLM levels up to 100 g/kg may induce oxidative stress and inhibit glutathione peroxidase activity. Although traf6, toll1, dorsal and relish were significantly upregulated in different BSFLM groups, the expression of tak1 was significantly downregulated in groups containing BSFLM, implying the immune susceptibility may be weakened. Gut flora analysis indicated dietary BSFLM altered both beneficial and opportunistic pathogenic bacterial abundance, with low levels of dietary BSFLM increased the abundance of bacteria that may contribute to carbohydrate utilization, while high levels of dietary BSFLM may cause intestinal disease and low intestinal immune response. To conclude, 60-80 g/kg of dietary BSFLM showed no adverse effects on the growth, antioxidant capacity and gut flora of shrimp, which was the adequate level in shrimp diet. While 100 g/kg dietary BSFLM may induce oxidative stress and potentially weaken the innate immunity of shrimp.

Abstract
The intestine-associated microbiota in crustaceans are considered a key element for maintaining homeostasis and health within the organisms. Recently, efforts have been made to characterize bacterial communities of freshwater crustaceans, including crayfish, and their interplay with the host's physiology and the aquatic environments. As a result, it has become evident that crayfish intestinal microbial communities display high plasticity, which is strongly influenced by both the diet, especially in aquaculture, and the environment. Moreover, studies regarding the characterization and distribution of the microbiota along the gut portions led to the discovery of bacteria with probiotic potential. The addition of these microorganisms to their food has shown a limited positive correlation with the growth and development of crayfish freshwater species. Finally, there is evidence that infections, particularly those from viral etiology, lead to low diversity and abundance of the intestinal microbial communities. In the present article, we have reviewed data on the crayfish' intestinal microbiota, highlighting the most frequently observed taxa and emphasizing the dominance of phylum within this community. In addition, we have also searched for evidence of microbiome manipulation and its potential impact on productive parameters, and discussed the role of the microbiome in the regulation of diseases presentation, and environmental perturbations.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a synbiotic composite an extract from a by-product of king oyster mushroom, Pleurotus eryngii (KOME), and probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum 7-40 on the growth performance and health status of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. The KOME was able to stimulate the growth of probiotic, but not the growth of Vibrio pathogens, including V. alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. harveyi. Four diets were formulated, including a control diet supplemented without prebiotic and probiotic, a basal diet supplemented with KOME (5 g kg-1) (ME), a basal diet supplemented with probiotic (1 × 108 CFU kg-1) (LP), and a basal diet supplemented with KOME (5 g kg-1) and probiotic (1 × 108 CFU kg-1) (SYN). Shrimp fed the ME, LP, and SYN diets had significantly higher survival than that of shrimp fed with the control diet for 8 weeks. Shrimp in the SYN group also had a significantly higher weight gain and total final weight in comparison with the control and other treatments. In the intestinal tract, lactic acid bacteria count was significantly higher in the SYN group, whereas the Vibrio-like bacteria count was significantly higher in the ME group than in the control group. For the health status assessment, the disease resistance of shrimp against V. alginolyticus was improved in all treatments compared to the shrimp in control. Shrimps in the SYN group had significantly lower cumulative mortality due to the significant increase in immune responses, including phenoloxidase, respiratory burst, and lysozyme activity, and the gene expression of pexn and pen4 in the haemocytes, and lgbp, sp, propoii, pexn, pen3a, pen4, and gpx in the haepatopancreas of shrimp as compared to the control. Therefore, it is suggested that a combination of KOME and probiotics can be used as a synbiotic to improve the growth performance and reduce the risk of infectious diseases caused by Vibrio and at the same time significantly contribute to the circular economy.

Abstract
An eight-week investigation was conducted to access the potential impact of dietary watermelon rind powder (WMRP) and L. plantarum CR1T5 (LP) administered individually or in combination on immunity, disease resistance, and growth rate of Nile tilapia fingerlings cultured in a biofloc system. Three hundred twenty fish (average weight 16.57 ± 0.14 g) were distributed into 16 tanks at a rate of 20 fish per tank. The fish were fed different diets: Diet 1 (0 g kg-1 WMRP and 0 CFU g-1 L. plantarum) (control), Diet 2 (40 g kg-1 WMRP), Diet 3 (108 CFU g-1 LP), and Diet 4 (40 g kg-1 WMRP + 108 CFU g-1 LP) for eight weeks. A completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications was applied. Skin mucus, serum immunity, and growth parameters were analyzed every 4 weeks, and a challenge study against S. agalactiae was conducted at the end of the experiment. The findings showed that the inclusion of WMRP + LP, administrated individually or in a mixture, significantly (P<0.05) stimulated growth, skin mucus, and serum immune parameters of Nile tilapia fingerlings compared with the control. The highest values were detected in fish fed the combination of WMRP and LP, as opposed to individual administration of either WMRP or LP, in which no significant differences were detected. Within the challenge study, the relative percent survival (RPS) in Diet 2, Diet 3, and Diet 4 was 48.0%, 52.0%, and 68.0%, respectively. Fish fed 40 g kg-1 WMRP + LP produced significantly higher RPS and protection against S. agalactiae than the other treated groups. Current results suggest that the dual administration of WMRP and LP maybe an effective feed additive for Nile tilapia grown in an indoor biofloc system, capable of improving growth parameters and increasing resistance to S. agalactiae infection.

Abstract
Eight weeks feeding experiment was managed to evaluate the impacts of dietary addition of pineapple peel powder (PAPP) and Lactobacillus plantarum CR1T5 (LP) individual or mixed on growth performance, skin mucus and serum immunities, as well as disease resistance of Nile tilapia. Fish (average weight 20.91 ± 0.11 g) were fed four diets: Diet 1 (0 g kg-1 PAPP and 0 CFU g-1 L. plantarum, Diet 2 (10 g kg-1 PAPP), Diet 3 (108 CFU g-1L. plantarum), and Diet 4 (10 g kg-1 PAPP + 108 CFU g-1L. plantarum). Serum and mucus immune responses, as well as growth rate, were assessed every 4 weeks. Ten fish were chosen for the challenge test with Streptococcus agalactiae after 8 weeks post-feeding. The findings showed that PAPP and/or LP diets increased (P ≤ 0.05) growth performance, skin mucus, and serum immune responses. The best data were obtained in fish fed a mixture of PAPP and LP. Nevertheless, no variation (P > 0.05) was recorded between groups fed PAPP or LP. The relative survival percentage (RSP, %) in Diet 2, Diet 3, and Diet 4 was 46.15%, 50.0%, and 73.08%. Fish fed mixture of PAPP + LP recorded the best (P < 0.05) survival rate versus other treatments. The current findings recommended using a mixture of PAPP and LP as promising functional additives for aquaculture practice.

Abstract
Simple Summary Fishmeal and fish oil being recognized as nutritionally balanced and preferred protein and lipid sources in aquafeeds for finfish farming. However, the limited supply, soaring prices, and depletion of wild capture fisheries have prompted the aquaculture industry to look for widely available and less expensive alternatives for fishmeal and fish oil to ensure the sustainability of aquaculture production. As an alternative to fishmeal protein and oil, black soldier fly (BSF) larvae is considered a promising candidate for its high protein, lipid and minerals content, as well as for its bioactive potential with anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral functions. This study investigated the effects of partial substitution of fishmeal protein and fish oil with partially defatted BSF larvae protein and oil on growth performance, non-specific immunity, mucosal barrier status and muscle fatty acids composition in barramundi. The findings of the study confirmed that BSF could substitute 30% fishmeal and fish oil successfully without compromising the growth of barramundi. Further, partial replacement of fishmeal and fish oil with BSF diets improved bactericidal activity, immune-related cytokine expression, and mucin cells in both gut and skin which are an indication of improved immunity of barramundi. Abstract A feeding trial was conducted to test the effects of partial replacement of fishmeal (FM) protein and fish oil (FO) with partially defatted black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens insect protein, and oil, respectively, on growth performance, immune response, gut and skin barrier status, and flesh quality in juvenile barramundi. Four isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets used in the study were a control diet based on FM, 30% FM replaced with H. illucens protein (HiP), 30% FO replaced with H. illucens oil (HiO), and both 30% FM and 30% FO replaced with H. illucens protein and oil (HiPO). Diets were fed twice a day to satiety in triplicated groups of barramundi with an initial body weight of 1.74 ± 0.15 g per fish. At the end of the trial, growth and feed utilization indices were found insignificant (p > 0.05) between the test diets and control. A significant increase in bactericidal activity was observed in fish fed the HiP diet while serum lysozyme activity was unchanged. Stress-related heat shock proteins (HSP70 and HSP90) did not differ significantly among the test diets while immune-relevant genes (IL-1β and IL-10) were significantly upregulated in HiP and HiOP groups. The number of mucin cells were increased in the gut and skin of HiP and HiOP fed fish when compared to the control diet. The total fatty acid compositions (∑SFA, ∑MUFA, ∑PUFA, ∑n-3, and ∑n-6) in the muscles of barramundi were not significantly influenced with H. illucens protein and oil diets when compared to the control.
