Granular cell tumor of the vulva: Case report and systematic review of the literature

RATIONALE

Granular cell tumor (GCT) of the vulva is an exceptionally rare female genital tract tumor. The majority of these are benign and there are no standardized surgical techniques for the special site to reduce tension of the wound.

PATIENT CONCERNS

A 47-years-old Chinese woman experienced a nodule on her right vulva with itch sometimes in late 2018.

DIAGNOSES

Magnetic resonance imaging showed a high possibility of vulvar cancer. While Chest X-ray, abdominal sonography, and cystoscopy examination were unremarkable.

INTERVENTIONS

The patient underwent local complete resection of vulvar tumor under general anesthesia on March 24, 2022. The resection scope was approximately 4 cm × 3 cm × 3 cm. Due to the large surgical incision, Z-plasty was performed to achieve the primary closure for decreasing wound tension and improving aesthetic reduction.

OUTCOMES

The final pathological diagnosis was benign GCT of the vulva and surgical margins were uninvolved. At 8 months follow-up, no new lesions were detected.

LESSONS

Surgery with negative resection margins is the mainstay for benign GCT of the vulva, while Z-plasty is appropriate for decreasing the tension of the wound and improving aesthetic reduction.

Abrikossoff's tumor of the penis: a case report

Background

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) also called Abrikossoff's tumor are rare tumors of often benign neurogenic origin, mainly located in the craniocervical region, rarely found in the external genitals. We report in this article the case report of a purely cutaneous case of rare clinical presentation at the level of the penis.

Case presentation

We report the case of a man, aged 54, with no history, consulted for a nodular lesion on the penis evolving for a year. a nodular cutaneous plate, indurated 3 cm in large diameter, painless and mobile in relation to the deep plane. The lymph node areas were free, and the remainder of the skin examination was without abnormalities.

Conclusions

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) also called Abrikossoff's tumor are rare tumors of often benign neurogenic origin, mainly located in the craniocervical region, rarely found in the external genitalia, the diagnosis is based on anatomopathology study completed by immunohistochemistry, and treatment consists of complete surgical excision of the tumor.

Nonsquamous Lesions of the Vulvar Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue: A Review (Part 2)

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this second article was to complete part 1 review of nonsquamous lesions of the vulvar skin and subcutaneous tissue (Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease, 2021), clinically and pathologically, based on the fifth edition of the World Health Organization tumor classification.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A database search of PubMed and Google Scholar was performed between 1970 and 2021, using the search terms "vulva," "lower genital tract," and "non-squamous lesions." The search was limited to "human gynecological pathology." Full article texts were reviewed, and reference lists were screened for additional articles. We excluded abstracts and articles written in the non-English language.

RESULTS

An initial list of 400 articles was identified. Thirty-seven articles discussed clinicopathological features of nonsquamous lesions of the vulvar skin and subcutaneous tissue.

CONCLUSIONS

Clinicopathological features of nonsquamous lesions of the vulvar skin and subcutaneous tissue as categorized by the updated World Health Organization classification are presented.

Granular Cell Tumor over the Mons Pubis: An Uncommon Tumor

Granular cell tumors are uncommon, usually benign, soft tissue neoplasms of neural origin. They occur throughout the body; vulval involvement is uncommon and labium majus is the commonest site in vulva. Complete surgical excision is the preferred treatment of choice to prevent recurrence. Here, we present a benign granular cell tumor over the mons pubis of vulva in a 27-year-old woman.

Pediatric Granular Cell Tumors of the Vulva: A Report of 4 Cases and a Review of the Literature

BACKGROUND

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are rare soft tissue lesions that can involve the female genital tract, including the vulva. Although malignant tumors are aggressive and uncommon, benign and atypical lesions still have associated risks, including recurrence and multisite development.

CASES

Four cases of pediatric vulvar GCT are presented, including 1 atypical and 3 benign tumors. The atypical lesion occurred in a 3-year-old girl, to our knowledge, the youngest reported patient with GCT of the vulva. Follow-up information is available for 3 patients, ranging 0-12 years.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

GCTs are an important differential diagnosis in patients with vulvar lesions. In the pediatric population, the tumors' risk of recurrence and multisite development require gynecologists to advocate for complete resection, careful follow-up, and thorough examination for additional tumor sites.

Granular Cell Tumor of Cecum: A Common Tumor in a Rare Site with Diagnostic Challenge

Granular cell tumor (GCT) also known as Abrikossoff's tumor is a benign neoplasm that is usually seen in the fourth to sixth decades of life with slight female preponderance. It is most frequently seen in the oral cavity, skin, and subcutaneous tissue. Gastrointestinal tract involvement is uncommon, in which esophagus is the most commonly affected site. There are case reports of GCT in stomach, appendix, colon and rectum. In this article, we report a case of GCT involving cecum. The cell of origin in GCT is controversial. There are various pools of thoughts regarding its histogenesis, the details of which are reviewed in this article with emphasis on the diagnostic difficulties encountered in this tumor.

Granular Cell Tumors on Unusual Anatomic Locations

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are soft tissue tumors, which are thought to be derived from Schwann cells. Although most GCTs are reported to arise in tongue and oral cavity (30-50%), they can appear on any anatomic sites, even visceral organs. Herein, we report 5 cases of GCTs on unusual anatomic locations, such as palm, arm, thigh, finger, and vulvar area. Complete surgical excision is preferred treatment of choice to prevent recurrence. These cases emphasize that GCTs not involving oral cavity are more prevalent than expected, and the diagnosis should be histopathologically confirmed.
