Seasonal evaluation of downscaled land surface temperature: A case study in a humid tropical city

Quantitative assessment of land surface temperature and vegetation indices on a kilometer grid scale

Due to expanding populations and thriving economies, studies into the built environment's thermal characteristics have increased. This research tracks and predicts how land use and land cover (LULC) changes may affect ground temperatures, urban heat islands, and city thermal fields (UTFVI). The current study examines land surface temperature (LST), urban thermal field variance index (UTFVI), normalized difference built-up index (NDBI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and land use land cover (LULC) on a kilometer scale. According to the comparative study, the mean LST decreases by 3 °C and the NDVI increases considerably. Correlation analysis showed that LST and NDVI are inversely connected, while LST and NDBI are positively correlated. NDVI and NDBI have a strong negative association, while LST and UTFVI have a positive correlation. Urban planners and environmentalists can study the LST's effects on land surface parameters in different environmental contexts during the lockout period. The urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon, in which the land surface qualities of an urban region cause a change in the urban thermal environment, forms and intensifies over an urban area. The minimum and maximum LST in grid number 1 in 2009 was 20.30 °C and 29.91 °C, respectively, with a mean LST of 25.1 °C. There was a decline in the minimum and maximum LST in grid number 1 in 2020 with a minimum and maximum LST of 17.31 °C and 25.35 °C, respectively, with a mean LST of 21.33 °C. There was a 3.8 °C drop in the LST of this grid. The minimum and maximum NDVI were also - 0.16 and 0.59, respectively, with an average NDVI value of 0.21. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate and foresee the impact of LULC change on the thermal environment and examines the connection between LULC shifts with subsequent changes in land surface temperature (LST) along with the UHI phenomenon. Maps of the UTFVI reveal positive UHI phenomena, with the highest UTFVI zones occurring over the developed area and none over the adjacent rural territory. During the summer months, the urban area with the strongest UTFVI zone grows noticeably larger than it does during the winter months during the forecasted years. Future policymakers and city planners can mitigate the effects of heat stress and create more sustainable urban environments by evaluating the expected distribution maps of LULC, LST, UHI, and UTFVI.

Effect of landscape pattern changes and environmental indices on land surface temperature in a fragile ecosystem in southeastern Iran

Climate change and urbanization along with uncontrolled development in less developed countries have led to an increased ecosystems' thermal environment. Some factors such as environmental indices and landscape pattern changes can alter Land Surface Temperature (LST). Thus, the accurate evaluation of the relationship between these factors and LST is considered important for managing ecosystems, especially fragile ones under high stress. The southeast of Iran has witnessed many destructions in the environmental dimension in the past years. Moreover, this region has a low socio-economic situation, which increases the need to study in this region. In the present study, we used Landsat TM5 satellite images (1989), Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS ones (2019), and Google Earth Engine (GEE) system to prepare the maps of temporal-spatial LST changes, Land Use/Land Cover (LULC), and selected environmental indices including Normalized Difference Vegetation (NDVI), Built-up (NDBI), Water Indices (NDWI), Land Surface Moisture (LSM) and albedo. Then, the correlation levels of LST with the aforementioned indices were assessed by using Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR), as well as assessing LST variation following LULC change. In addition, the Moran index was used to analyze global and local spatial autocorrelation. The results represented an 8.67-degree increase in the mean LST during 1989-2019. Urban and built-up areas had a significant effect on increasing the temperature of the region. Additionally, water bodies and vegetation cover in the region were the most crucial parameters in LST reduction. All of the applied indices were strongly related to LST (>0.70), while some exhibited more correlation in each year. Further, the highest correlation of LST was observed with LSM and NDBI in 1989, as well as with NDVI and NDWI during 2019. In addition, the Moran index value reduced from 1989 to 2019 (from 0.93 to 0.89). Finally, the region rehabilitation based on sustainable development principles played an important role in the direct and indirect decrease in LST.

Dengue risk zone mapping of Thiruvananthapuram district, India: a comparison of the AHP and F-AHP methods

Dengue fever, which is spread by Aedes mosquitoes, has claimed many lives in Kerala, with the Thiruvananthapuram district bearing the brunt of the toll. This study aims to demarcate the dengue risk zones in Thiruvananthapuram district using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and the fuzzy-AHP (F-AHP) methods. For the risk modelling, geo-environmental factors (normalized difference vegetation index, land surface temperature, topographic wetness index, land use/land cover types, elevation, normalized difference built-up index) and demographic factors (household density, population density) have been utilized. The ArcGIS 10.8 and ERDAS Imagine 8.4 software tools have been used to derive the risk zone maps. The area of the risk maps is classified into five zones. The dengue risk zone maps were validated using dengue case data collected from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme portal. From the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) values, it is proved that the F-AHP method (AUC value of 0.971) has comparatively more prediction capability than the AHP method (AUC value of 0.954) in demarcating the dengue risk zones. Also, based on the comparison of the risk zone map with actual case data, it was confirmed that around 82.87% of the dengue cases occurred in the very high and high-risk zones, thus proving the efficacy of the model. According to the dengue risk map prepared using the F-AHP model, 9.09% of the area of Thiruvananthapuram district is categorized as very high risk. The prepared dengue risk maps will be helpful for decision-makers, staff with the health, and disaster management departments in adopting effective measures to prevent the risks of dengue spread and thereby minimize loss of life.

Seasonal Differences in Land Surface Temperature under Different Land Use/Land Cover Types from the Perspective of Different Climate Zones

The process of urbanization is accelerating, and land surface temperature (LST) is increasing, seriously threatening human health. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the differences in LST of different land use/land cover (LULC) types. Using MOD11A2 and MCD12Q1 data, this study explored the seasonal differences in LST of each LULC type from the perspective of different climate zones. The results showed that the maximum and minimum LSTs during the day were higher than those at night. During the day, the LSTs of urban and built-up and barren lands were higher than those of forests, grasslands, and water bodies; at night, the LSTs of urban and built-up lands decreased but remained high, while barren lands showed a significant decrease to LSTs even lower than those of water bodies. In addition, the difference in daytime LST of the LU16 type (barren lands) in different climatic zones was the most obvious and was much higher than that of other LULC types in the middle temperate and south temperate zones, but much lower than those in the middle subtropical and north subtropical zones. This comparison of the LST differences of each LULC type under different climate backgrounds provides an important reference for rational urban planning.

Evaluating the impacts of major cyclonic catastrophes in coastal Bangladesh using geospatial techniques

Cyclonic catastrophes frequently devastate coastal regions of Bangladesh that host around 35 million people which represents two-thirds of the total population. They have caused many problems like agricultural crop loss, forest degradation, damage to built-up areas, river and shoreline changes that are linked to people’s livelihood and ecological biodiversity. There is an absence of a comprehensive assessment of the major cyclonic disasters of Bangladesh that integrates geospatial technologies in a single study. This study aims to integrate geospatial technologies with major disasters and compares them, which has not been tried before. This paper tried to identify impacts that occurred in the coastal region by major catastrophic events at a vast level using different geospatial technologies. It focuses to identify the impacts of major catastrophic events on livelihood and food production as well as compare the impacts and intensity of different disasters. Furthermore, it compared the losses among several districts and for that previous and post-satellite images of disasters that occurred in 1988, 1991, 2007, 2009, 2019 were used. Classification technique like machine learning algorithm was done in pre- to post-disaster images. For quantifying change in the indication of different factors, indices including NDVI, NDWI, NDBI were developed. “Change vector analysis” equation was performed in bands of the images of pre- and post-disaster to identify the magnitude of change. Also, crop production variance was analyzed to detect impacts on crop production. Furthermore, the changes in shallow to deep water were analyzed. There is a notable change in shallow to deep water bodies after each disaster in Satkhira and Bhola district but subtle changes in Khulna and Bagerhat districts. Change vector analysis revealed greater intensity in Bhola in 1988 and Satkhira in 1991. Furthermore, over the years 2007 and 2009 it showed medium and deep intense areas all over the region. A sharp decrease in Aus rice production is witnessed in Barishal in 2007 when cyclone “Sidr” was stricken. The declination of potato production is seen in Khulna district after the 1988 cyclone. A huge change in the land-use classes from classified images like water body, Pasture land in 1988 and water body, forest in 1991 is marked out. Besides, a clear variation in the settlement was observed from the classified images. This study explores the necessity of using more geospatial technologies in disastrous impacts assessment around the world in the context of Bangladesh and, also, emphasizes taking effective, proper and sustainable disaster management and mitigation measures to counter future disastrous impacts.

The impact of impervious surface, vegetation, and soil areas on land surface temperatures in a semi-arid region using Landsat satellite images enriched with Ndaisi method data

Impervious surfaces are a significant issue of both urbanization and environmental assessment. However, it is a problem to classify impervious surface (IS) and soil areas as separate classes in land cover classification. The objectives of this study are to obtain impervious surface, vegetation, and soil areas clearly of an urban complex with a semi-arid climate and to better determine the relationships of IS, vegetation, and soil areas with land surface temperatures (LSTs). For this purpose, IS, vegetation, and soil areas in a semi-arid city of Turkey-Kayseri city were identified by using Normalized Difference Anthropogenic Impervious Surface Index (NDAISI) data and support vector machine (SVM) method together in the classification of different areas. Landsat 5, 7, and 8 satellite images of 1987, 2000, and 2013 were used, respectively, in this study. Afterward, the effects of these areas on LSTs were analyzed. Regression analysis was used to determine the relationships between land cover areas and surface temperatures. To better demonstrate these relationships, besides common pixel-based and classical regional-based approaches, a new density-based regional analysis approach was proposed. This study is an innovative one in terms of detecting IS and indicating relationships between land cover areas and surface temperatures in semi-arid regions. Another innovation of the study is related to the results produced. The results showed that decreasing LST values were observed with increasing IS and vegetation cover values and increasing LST values were observed with increasing soil areas. The present findings may provide significant contributions to the literature and will facilitate the development of urban planning strategies in semi-arid regions.

An Improved Approach for Downscaling Coarse-Resolution Thermal Data by Minimizing the Spatial Averaging Biases in Random Forest

Land surface temperature (LST) plays a fundamental role in various geophysical processes at varying spatial and temporal scales. Satellite-based observations of LST provide a viable option for monitoring the spatial-temporal evolution of these processes. Downscaling is a widely adopted approach for solving the spatial-temporal trade-off associated with satellite-based observations of LST. However, despite the advances made in the field of LST downscaling, issues related to spatial averaging in the downscaling methodologies greatly hamper the utility of coarse-resolution thermal data for downscaling applications in complex environments. In this study, an improved LST downscaling approach based on random forest (RF) regression is presented. The proposed approach addresses issues related to spatial averaging biases associated with the downscaling model developed at the coarse resolution. The approach was applied to downscale the coarse-resolution Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis (LSA-SAF) LST product derived from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) sensor aboard the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) weather satellite. The LSA-SAF product was downscaled to a spatial resolution of ~30 m, based on predictor variables derived from Sentinel 2, and the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) digital elevation model (DEM). Quantitatively and qualitatively, better downscaling results were obtained using the proposed approach in comparison to the conventional approach of downscaling LST using RF widely adopted in LST downscaling studies. The enhanced performance indicates that the proposed approach has the ability to reduce the spatial averaging biases inherent in the LST downscaling methodology and thus is more suitable for downscaling applications in complex environments.

Downscale MODIS Land Surface Temperature Based on Three Different Models to Analyze Surface Urban Heat Island: A Case Study of Hangzhou

Remote sensing technology plays an increasingly important role in land surface temperature (LST) research. However, various remote sensing data have spatial–temporal scales contradictions. In order to address this problem in LST research, the current study downscaled LST based on three different models (multiple linear regression (MLR), thermal sharpen (TsHARP) and random forest (RF)) from 1 km to 100 m to analyze surface urban heat island (SUHI) in daytime (10:30 a.m.) and nighttime (10:30 p.m.) of four seasons, based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)/LST products and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI). This research used an area (25 × 25 km) of Hangzhou with high spatial heterogeneity as the study area. R2 and RMSE were introduced to evaluate the conversion accuracy. Finally, we compared with similarly retrieved LST to verify the feasibility of the method. The results indicated the following. (1) The RF model was the most suitable to downscale MODIS/LST. The MLR model and the TsHARP model were not applicable for downscaling studies in highly heterogeneous regions. (2) From the time dimension, the prediction precision in summer and winter was clearly higher than that in spring and autumn, and that at night was generally higher than during the day. (3) The SUHI range at night was smaller than that during the day, and was mainly concentrated in the urban center. The SUHI of the research region was strongest in autumn and weakest in winter. (4) The validation results of the error distribution histogram indicated that the MODIS/LST downscaling method based on the RF model is feasible in highly heterogeneous regions.
