Abstract
Insufficient hydrophobicity and mechanical properties pose significant challenges in the development of starch-based degradable films. This study prepared modified (crosslinked, acetylated, and crosslinked & acetylated) cassava starch films, and different concentrations of strengthening agents (polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate, gelatin, and hyaluronic acid) were added to produce modified starch composite films. The physical properties, structure characteristics, and degradability of these films were systematically evaluated. The dual-modified (crosslinked & acetylated) starch film exhibited superior hydrophobic properties (contact angle = 90.04°), and the addition of strengthening agents significantly enhanced the tensile strength of the composite films (p < 0.05). Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that the strengthening agents interacted with starch through hydrogen bonding. Additionally, the hyaluronic acid-starch composite film exhibited the most rapid degradation in soil (53 % weight loss after 30 days of storage) and achieved the highest comprehensive score for physical properties. This film combined exceptional hydrophobicity and mechanical properties, making it an ideal candidate for food packaging applications. These findings suggest that the hyaluronic acid-starch composite film has broad potential applications in the field of degradable food packaging films.

Abstract
The field of tissue engineering has made significant advancements with extrusion-based bioprinting, which uses shear forces to create intricate tissue structures. However, the success of this method heavily relies on the rheological properties of bioinks. Most bioinks use shear-thinning. While a few component-based efforts have been reported to predict the viscosity of bioinks, the impact of shear rate has been vastly ignored. To address this gap, our research presents predictive models using machine learning (ML) algorithms, including polynomial fit (PF), decision tree (DT), and random forest (RF), to estimate bioink viscosity based on component weights and shear rate. We utilized novel bioinks composed of varying percentages of alginate (2-5.25%), gelatin (2-5.25%), and TEMPO-Nano fibrillated cellulose (0.5-1%) at shear rates from 0.1 to 100 s-1. Our study analyzed 169 rheological measurements using 80% training and 20% validation data. The results, based on the coefficient of determination (R2) and mean absolute error (MAE), showed that the RF algorithm-based model performed best: [(R2, MAE) RF = (0.99, 0.09), (R2, MAE) PF = (0.95, 0.28), (R2, MAE) DT = (0.98, 0.13)]. These predictive models serve as valuable tools for bioink formulation optimization, allowing researchers to determine effective viscosities without extensive experimental trials to accelerate tissue engineering.

Abstract
The hydrophilicity of gelatin films obviously limits their application. In this work, novel protonated chitin nanofiber was prepared with green methods, surficial deacetylation combined with acidic and mechanical treatment. Composite films with excellent water and oxygen barrier properties were successfully prepared by blending O/W Pickering emulsions stabilized by chitin nanofibers with gelatin substrates. The films were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, mechanical properties, water and oxygen permeability, moisture content, water solubility, water contact angle and optical properties. The results demonstrated that the amino groups of chitin nanofibers bound to the carboxyl groups of gelatin via electrostatic interactions, which contributing to the excellent mechanical and barrier properties of composite films. The elongation at break of composite film (the concentration of chitin nanofiber was 0.2 wt%) was 2.66 times of gelatin film. And the water vapor and oxygen permeability of composite films lowered to 65.9 % and 52.9 %, respectively. The introduction of O/W Pickering emulsion significantly enhanced the hydrophobicity of gelatin-based film and the chitin nanofibers played a positive role in stabilizing the gelatin chains to a certain extent. This study expands the application fields of gelatin-based films and provides valuable technical route for the preparation of barrier films.

Abstract
Carboxymethyl starch (CST) was introduced to improve gelatin films and its practical application as edible high-performance films for food packaging and cooking was also investigated. The gelatin films modified by carboxymethyl starch exhibited the transparent appearance, tensile strength, barrier properties (oxygen, water vapor and UV light), and thermal performance (TGA, thermal shrinkage and heat-sealing strength). Resulting from the effect of electrostatic interaction modes on the properties of films, electrostatic repulsion could surpass electrostatic attraction in improving the tensile strength, oxygen barrier property and thermal stability of the films probably due to extensive physical entanglement without aggregation. Analysis of FTIR, zeta potential, interfacial dilatational rheology, shear rheological properties, XRD, Raman, SEM and AFM suggested that hydrogen bonding and electrostatic repulsion contributed to the excellent performance. The packaged food could also be cooked with the prepared film for porridge; and the film slightly influenced the shear rheological properties of porridge and imposed little effect on the odors (Electronic-Nose) of porridge. Hence, the gelatin films modified by carboxymethyl starch could potentially work as the edible inner packaging or the edible quantitative packaging for food, offer convenience for consumers, reduce the packaging waste and avoid an extra burden on environment.

Abstract
The widespread use of starch-based films is hindered by inadequate tensile strength and high water sensitivity. To address these limitations, a novel starch film with a dynamic network structure was produced via the dehydration-condensation reaction of N, N'-methylene diacrylamide (MBA) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The improvement in mechanical properties was enhanced by the incorporation of MCC, which was achieved through intermolecular hydrogen bonding and chemical crosslinking. To verify the interactions among MCC, MBA, and starch, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted. The results established the predicted interactions. The dynamic network structure of the film reduced the water absorption capacity (WAC) of starch and MCC hydroxyl groups, as confirmed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). These analyses showed a restriction in the mobility of starch chains, resulting in a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) of 69.26 °C. The modified starch films exhibited excellent potential for packaging applications, demonstrating a higher contact angle (CA) of 89.63°, the lowest WAC of 4.73 g/g, and the lowest water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 13.13 g/m2/d, along with improved mechanical properties and identical light transmittance compared to pure starch films.

Abstract
Natural polymer-based adhesives are green alternatives, necessary to reduce the problems impacted by synthetic adhesives. Starch and gelatin have extraordinary potential for the synthesis of biobased adhesives. Citric acid (CA), a natural acid, induces the crosslinking and hydrolyzing of both gelatin and starch. In this sense, this work deals with the use of gelatin capsule residues as a promising material to produce biobased adhesives in combination with cassava starch in the presence of different CA concentrations characterizing their mechanical, physicochemical and microstructural properties. Depending on CA concentration, formulations adjusted to different applications can be obtained such as liquid and pressure-sensitive adhesive films. The inclusion of CA allows us not only to improve the applicability of the system since it modifies the flowability of the adhesives as evidenced by the observed changes in the viscosity (from 158.3 to 90.3 for formulations with 20 and 80% CA, respectively). In addition, mechanical profiles showed that the inclusion of CA increased the adhesive bond strength (from 2230.7 to 2638.7 for formulations with 20 and 80% CA, respectively). Structural modifications induced by CA in adhesive formulations were highlighted by ATR-FTIR analysis.

Abstract
Edible films applied in food packaging must possess excellent inhibitory and mechanical properties. Protein-based films exhibit a high capacity for film formation and offer good gas barrier properties. However, they have weak mechanical and water barrier characteristics. The objective of this research was to develop active composite films based on reinforced soy protein isolate (SPI)/Kappa-carrageenan (K) with varying concentrations of bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCN). Increasing the BCN concentration improved the morphological, structural, mechanical, water vapor barrier, and moisture content properties. In comparison to the pure SPI film (S), the film with a high BCN concentration demonstrated a significant decrease in WS (22.98 ± 0.78 %), MC (21.72 ± 0.68 %), WVP (1.22 ± 0.14 g mm-1 S-1 Pa-1 10-10), and EAB (57.77 ± 5.25 %) properties. It should be emphasized that there was no significant alteration in the physicomechanical properties of the optimal film (SKB0.75) containing Zenian-loaded metal-organic frameworks (ZM). However, it substantially enhanced the thermal stability of this film, which can be attributed to the strong interfacial interactions between polymer chains and ZM. Furthermore, the ZM films inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria and increased the DPPH antioxidant activity. Thus, SKB0.75-ZM2 films can be utilized as practical components in food packaging.

Abstract
Starch is regarded as one of the most promising sustainable materials due to its abundant yield and excellent biodegradability. From the perspective of practical engineering applications, this paper systematically describes the development of starch-based bio-composites in the past decade. Packaging properties, processing characteristics, and current challenges for the efficient processing of starch-based bio-composites are reviewed in industrial packaging. Green coatings, binders, adsorbents, flocculants, flame retardants, and emulsifiers are used as examples to illustrate the versatility of starch-based bio-composites in chemical agent applications. In addition, the work compares the application of starch-based bio-composites in conventional spinning with emerging spinning technologies and describes the challenges of electrostatic spinning for preparing nanoscale starch-based fibers. In terms of flexible electronics, the starch-based bio-composites are regard as a solid polymer electrolyte and easily modified porous material. Moreover, we describe the applications of the starch-based gels in tissue engineering, controlled drug release, and medical dressings. Finally, the theoretical input and technical guidance in the advanced sustainable engineering application of the starch-based bio-composites are provided in the work.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the physicochemical characteristics of the soy protein isolated/basil seed gum (SPI/BSG) film activated with propolis (PP). The obtained results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile investigations illustrated that the addition of HNTs as nanofiller led to positive changes in the morphology, thermal stability, and mechanical characteristics of SPI/BSG films. The barrier properties of films considerably decreased with incorporation of HNTs. Furthermore, the encapsulation of PP as bioactive agent into the produced films significantly increased (P < 0.05) the antioxidant potential of the samples in DPPH radical-scavenging activity assays. The antibacterial effects of film also significantly increased (P < 0.05) after the encapsulation of PP. In conclusion, the produced films illustrated acceptable efficiency for usage in food packaging system.

Abstract
Halal gelatin sourced from fish can be improved in quality through mixing with other polymers so that it can be an alternative as food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic ingredient. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of milkfish scale gelatin after the formation of a composite with corn, potato, and cassava starch to be used as a pharmaceutical and food excipient.
The gelatin composite (FMG) of milkfish scales with corn, potato, and cassava starch (GM, GS, and GC) was made by casting method, using a ratio of gelatin and starch (4,5:0,5). Characteristic assessment includes organoleptic, viscosity, swelling index, FT-IR spectroscopy, and Calorimetry (DSC). Data analysis used a non-parametric One Way ANOVA statistical method (p<0.05).
The composites produced from mixing FMG with corn starch (GM), potato (GS) and cassava (GC) showed hygroscopic properties, increased viscosity values and decreased swelling index in GM (7.89 cP & 25.0%), GS (8 .36 cP & 21.0%), and GC (8.64 cP & 12.7%), compared to FMG (0.11 cP & 75%) at p < 0.05. The behavior of the composite FT-IR spectrum follows the FMG spectrum pattern with a shift in wavenumber in the typical bands (Amide A, Amide B, Amide I, Amide II, and Amide III) in the gelatin spectrum. There was a shift of Tg to higher values in GM and GS, Tm increased in GM and GC, and all composites showed a decrease in melting enthalpy.
The spectral pattern of the composite follows the typical spectral pattern of FMG. GM, GS, and GC composites showed increased viscosity, water retention, and thermal stability compared to FMG. GM and GS may be used as pharmaceutical and food excipients.

Abstract
Turkish delights (lokum) are traditional confectionery products that contain mainly sucrose as the sugar source and starch as the gelling agent. However, manufacturers sometimes might prefer to use corn syrup instead of sucrose to decrease the cost. This jeopardizes the originality of Turkish delights and leads to production of adulterated samples. In this study, Turkish delights were formulated using sucrose (original sample) and different types of corn syrups (SBF10, SCG40, and SCG60). Results clearly indicated that corn-syrup-containing samples had improved textural properties and were less prone to crystallization. However, this case affected authenticity of the products negatively. Both time domain nuclear magnetic resonance (TD NMR) and fast field cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (FFC NMR) techniques were found to be effective to discriminate the original samples from the corn-syrup-containing samples. In addition, quantitative analysis of FFC NMR showed that, apart from the rotational motions, molecules in Turkish delights (mainly water and also sugar molecules) undergo two types of translational dynamics.

Abstract
Studying the interactions of biopolymers like polysaccharides and proteins is quite important mainly due to the wide number of applications such as the stabilization and encapsulation of active compounds in complex systems. Complexation takes place when materials like proteins and polysaccharides are blended to promote the entrapment of active compounds. The interaction forces between the charged groups in the polymeric chains allow the miscibility of the components in the complex system. Understanding the interactions taking place between the polymers as well as between the wall material and the active compound is important when designing delivery systems. However, some features of the biopolymers like structure, functional groups, or electrical charge as well as extrinsic parameters like pH or ratios might affect the structure and the performance of the complex system when used in encapsulation applications. This work summarizes the recent progress of the polysaccharide/protein complexes for encapsulation and the influence of the pH on the structural modifications during the complexation process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The technological advances in agriculture, driven by the increased demand for food attributed to population growth, have led to the search for technologies that allow greater control over the variables that interfere in crop yield. Several techniques stand out for optimizing yield capacity, including cultivation in a protected environment, mulching and low tunneling. To expand the use of these techniques, synthetic petroleum-based polymers are employed due to their low cost, easy processing, and lightness. However, they take a long time to degrade, and, since they are discarded at the end of each cycle of cultivation, end up accumulating in the environment causing irreversible damage. RESULTS The use of biodegradable films, made of starch and/or a protein source such as gelatin, has been studied as a promising alternative. Both stand out because of their film-forming ability, and because they come from abundant sources and are biodegradable. CONCLUSION This study aimed to review the current findings on starch and gelatin films that can be used as alternatives to conventional plastics in agricultural crops. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
As a degradable natural biomaterial, gelatin has good biocompatibility and nontoxicity, but gelatin is easily soluble in water which has limited its application. In order to solve this tough defect, superhydrophobic gelatin films (GSF) were prepared by first grafting silica nanoparticles onto gelatin films and then modifying silica nanoparticles with a fluorosilane coupling agent (FAS). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a particle size analyzer, a contact angle instrument (CA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), a universal materials tester and an Incucyte™ Zoom system were used to characterize the morphology, molecular interactions, superhydrophobic performance, and cytotoxicity. Results show that GSF300 modified by silica nanoparticles with a particle size of 303 nm has the largest contact angle (158.6°). At the same time, the contact angle is still more than 150° after 48 hours of infiltration in water. These results indicate that GSF300 has strong long-term water resistance. In addition, GSF300 has good mechanical strength, durability and nontoxicity. Therefore, such a durable, robust and superhydrophobic film has good potential applications in various functional biomedical aspects. As a degradable natural biomaterial, gelatin has good biocompatibility and nontoxicity, but gelatin is easily soluble in water which has limited its application.![]()
