Preparation, characterization and antimicrobial activity of polyvinyl alcohol/gum arabic/chitosan composite films incorporated with black pepper essential oil and ginger essential oil

Highly Sensitive Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensor Based on a Multicross-Linked Dual-Network Ionic Hydrogel for Blood Pressure Monitoring Applications

Flexible capacitive pressure sensors based on ionic hydrogels (IHs) have garnered significant attention in the field of wearable technology. However, the vulnerability of traditional single-network hydrogels to mechanical damage and the complexity associated with preparing double-network hydrogels present challenges in developing a highly sensitive, easily prepared, and durable IH-based flexible capacitive pressure sensor. This study introduces a novel multicross-linked dual-network IH achieved through the physical and chemical cross-linking of polymers polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), ionic solution H3PO4, and cross-linking agent gum arabic. Flexible capacitive pressure sensors, characterized by high sensitivity and a broad pressure range, are fabricated by employing mesh as templates to design cut-corner cube microstructures with high uniformity and controllability on the IHs. The sensor exhibits high sensitivity across a wide pressure range (0-290 kPa) and with excellent features such as high resolution (∼1.3 Pa), fast response-recovery time (∼11 ms), and repeatable compression stability at 25 kPa (>2000 cycles). The IHs as a dielectric layer demonstrate long-term water retention properties, enabling exposure to air for up to 100 days. Additionally, the developed sensor shows the ability to accurately measure the pulse wave within the small pressure range. By combining the pulse wave acquired by the sensor with a trained neural network model, we achieve successful blood pressure (BP) prediction, meeting the standards set by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation and the British Hypertension Society. Ultimately, the sensor proposed in this study holds promising prospects for broad applications in high-precision wearable medical electronic devices.

Advances in sustainable food packaging applications of chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol blend films

Researchers are addressing environmental concerns related to petroleum-based plastic packaging by exploring biopolymers from natural sources, chemical synthesis, and microbial fermentation. Despite the potential of individual biopolymers, they often exhibit limitations like low water resistance and poor mechanical properties. Blending polymers emerges as a promising strategy to overcome these challenges, creating films with enhanced performance. This review focuses on recent advancements in chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend food packaging films. It covers molecular structure, properties, strategies for performance improvement, and applications in food preservation. The blend's excellent compatibility and intermolecular interactions make it a promising candidate for biodegradable films. Future research should explore large-scale thermoplastic technologies and investigate the incorporation of additives like natural extracts and nanoparticles to enhance film properties. Chitosan/PVA blend films offer a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastic packaging, with potential applications in practical food preservation.

Incorporation of essential oils in polymeric films for biomedical applications

Natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers are widely used to obtain more sustainable films with biological, physicochemical, and mechanical properties for biomedical purposes. The incorporation of essential oils (EOs) in polymeric films can optimize the biological activities of these EOs, protect them from degradation, and serve as a prototype for new biotechnological products. This article aims to discuss updates over the last 10 years on incorporating EOs into natural and synthetic biodegradable polymer films for biomedical applications. Chitosan, alginates, cellulose, and proteins such as gelatine, silk, and zein are among the natural polymers most commonly used to prepare biodegradable films for release EOs. In addition to these, the most cited synthetic biodegradable polymers are poly(L-lactide) (PLA), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL). The EOs of clove, cinnamon, tea tree, eucalyptus, frankincense, lavender, thyme and oregano incorporated into polymeric films have been the most studied EOs in recent years in the biomedical field. Biomedical applications include antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria and fungi, anticancer activity, potential for tissue engineering and regeneration with scaffolds and wound healing as dressings. Thus, this article reports on the importance of incorporating EOs into biodegradable polymer films, making these systems especially attractive for various biomedical applications.

Hibiscus Sabdariffa L. Extract as a Natural Additive in Food Packaging Biodegradable Films to Improve Antioxidant, Antimicrobial, and Physicochemical Properties

In this study, biodegradable active films were prepared from potato starch and polyvinyl alcohol at different proportions, mixed with acetone extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (HS) and using glycerol as a plasticizer. Functional properties, antimicrobial, and antioxidant capacity were evaluated. Potato starch films with a proportion of polyvinyl alcohol up to 50% and HS extract had significant antioxidant capacity and antibacterial effect against most of the analyzed strains. Adding polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and HS extract improved the mechanical performance and reduced water vapor permeability of the materials. The active biobased films with HS extract presented good physicochemical, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. These materials are considered as suitable for food packaging, and the active compounds in the roselle extract are a natural antibacterial option for the food area. The materials based entirely on biodegradable products are an excellent alternative when developing and marketing biobased materials, minimizing the environmental impact of food packaging.

Development of bioactive films loaded with extract and polysaccharide of Pinus brutia bark

Society's interest in natural and clean products in many areas, such as food and cosmetics, has increased considerably. It has led to the development of new techniques in the packaging of products so that the wastes from the preferred products can be recycled. In this context, Pinus brutia bark was preferred within the scope of the study to transform natural wastes into functional components and use them as packaging material. P. brutia bark (PBB) samples were collected from Bursa, Turkey. PBB samples were ultrasonically extracted using various solvents (acetone, butanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, hexane, methanol, petroleum ether, and water) and a solvent-acidic hydrolysis system. The phenolic content profile of PBB samples was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection, and total flavonoid content, antioxidant capacity, and total phenolic content were determined. Chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (CS-PVA) films loaded with polysaccharides and containing methanolic extract were developed. The physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the films were characterized. It is known that the thickness of the films determines the mechanical properties required to maintain the integrity of the packaging during storage and transport. From the results of the study, it was concluded that the elongation at break value was higher in CS-PVA-PBB-M films (111.08% ± 10.46%), Young's modulus (31.74 ± 21.37 N/mm2), and tensile strength (3.01 ± 0.50 N/mm2) values were higher in CS-PVA films. In this case, it was concluded that adding proanthocyanidin to edible films gives flexibility to the films.

Characterization of active films based on chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol integrated with ginger essential oil-loaded bacterial cellulose and application in sea bass (Lateolabrax japonicas) packaging

The poor mechanical properties, low water-resistance, and limited antimicrobial activity of chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based film limited its application in aquatic product preservation. Herein, bacterial cellulose (BC) was used to load ginger essential oil (GEO). The effects of the addition of BC and different concentrations of GEO on the physicochemical and antimicrobial activities of films were systematically evaluated. Finally, the application of sea bass fillets was investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) analysis indicated dense networks were formed, which was verified by enhanced physical properties. The mechanical properties, barrier properties, and antimicrobial activities enhanced as GEO concentration increased. CPB0.8 (0.8 % GEO) film had better tensile strength (TS) and barrier performance, improved the quality, and extended the shelf-life of sea bass for another 6 days at least. Overall, active films are potential packaging materials for aquatic products.

Design, optimization and pharmaceutical characterization of wound healing film dressings with chloramphenicol and ibuprofen

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the present study was to develop and optimize a wound dressing film loaded with chloramphenicol (CAM) and ibuprofen (IBU) using a Quality by Design (QbD) approach.

SIGNIFICANCE

The two drugs have been combined in the same dressing as they address two critical aspects of the wound healing process, namely prevention of bacterial infection and reduction of inflammation and pain related to injury.

METHODS

Three critical formulation variables were identified, namely the ratios of Kollicoat SR 30D, polyethylene glycol 400 and polyvinyl alcohol. These variables were further considered as factors of an experimental design, and 17 formulations loaded with CAM and IBU were prepared via solvent casting. The films were characterized in terms of dimensions, mechanical properties and bioadhesion. Additionally, the optimal formulation was characterized regarding tensile properties, swelling behavior, water vapor transmission rate, surface morphology, thermal behavior, goniometry, in vitro drug release, cell viability, and antibacterial activity.

RESULTS

The film was optimized by setting minimal values for the folding endurance, adhesive force and hardness. The optimally formulated film showed good fluid handling properties in terms of swelling behavior and water vapor transmission rate. IBU and CAM were released from the film up to 80.9% and 82.5% for 8 h. The film was nontoxic, and the antibacterial activity was prominent against Micrococcus spp. and Streptococcus pyogenes.

CONCLUSIONS

The QbD approach was successfully implemented to develop and optimize a novel film dressing promising for the treatment of low-exuding acute wounds prone to infection and inflammation.

Novel Tannic Acid-Modified Cobalt-Based Metal-Organic Framework: Synthesis, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Activity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of hybrid inorganic-organic materials with typical porous structures and a unique morphology. Due to their diversity, they are extensively used in a wide range of applications such as environmental, catalysis, biomedicine, etc. In this study, a novel cobalt-based MOF modified with tannic acid (Co-TPA/TA) (TPA: terephthalic acid; TA: tannic acid) as a promising material for antimicrobial agents was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis and compared with an as-synthesized cobalt-based framework. Co-TPA/TA demonstrated good antimicrobial efficiency under optimum conditions against yeast Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Gram-negative Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 with an inhibition zone ranging from 14 to 20 mm. Reduced ATP levels, generation of reactive oxygen species, membrane damage from cobalt ion release, and development of an alkaline microenvironment could all be contributing factors to the possible antimicrobial pathways. The novel framework can be obtained using simple, affordable, and easily accessible commercial ligands and is considered to have the potential to be used as an antimicrobial material in the future.

Microencapsulation of Essential Oils Using Faba Bean Protein and Chia Seed Polysaccharides via Complex Coacervation Method

The aim of this study was to develop microcapsules containing juniper or black pepper essential oils, using a combination of faba bean protein and chia seed polysaccharides (in ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 2:1). By synergizing these two polymers, our goal was to enhance the efficiency of essential oil microencapsulation, opening up various applications in the food industry. Additionally, we aimed to investigate the influence of different polymer mixing ratios on the properties of the resulting microcapsules and the course of the complex coacervation process. To dissolve the essential oils and limit their evaporation, soybean and rapeseed oils were used. The powders resulting from the freeze-drying of coacervates underwent testing to assess microencapsulation efficiency (65.64-87.85%), density, flowability, water content, solubility, and hygroscopicity. Additionally, FT-IR and DSC analyses were conducted. FT-IR analysis confirmed the interactions between the components of the microcapsules, and these interactions were reflected in their high thermal resistance, especially at a protein-to-polysaccharide ratio of 2:1 (177.2 °C). The water content in the obtained powders was low (3.72-7.65%), but it contributed to their hygroscopicity (40.40-76.98%).

Production and characterization of polyvinyl alcohol films containing essential oil

Packaging plays an important role in protecting foodstuffs against physicochemical damage and microbial activity, as well as extending shelf life. In recent years, petrochemical compounds that cause environmental pollution and contamination due to their non-biodegradability have been replaced by biocompatible polymer-based films in the food packaging industry. Due to aromatic essential oils (EO), various biological activities, and their potential to replace chemical preservatives in the field of food preservation, Star Anise essential oil, which has properties, such as free radical scavenger, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral, was used as an additive in this study. Biodegradable and biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer was used as the matrix and polymer-based films were produced in 3 different concentrations. Spectral analysis, structural, chemical, and thermal characterizations, and surface morphologies of the produced films by the direct incorporation method were examined. In addition, the antibacterial activities of the films on Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC BAA 747 bacteria were investigated. As a result of the examinations, it was determined that an interfacial interaction occurred between the matrix and the filler, and the produced films were thermally resistant and showed antibacterial activity against Gram (+)/Gram (-) bacteria. Consequently, it can be concluded that PVA films containing Star Anise essential oil present a prospective substitute in a variety of industrial packaging systems, including those for food, medicine, and cosmetics.

Persimmon preservation using edible coating of chitosan enriched with ginger oil and visualization of internal structure changes using X-ray computed tomography

The incorporation of ginger oil (GO) influenced the physical, optical, and structural properties of the chitosan (CH) film including the decreases of moisture content (60.15 %), water solubility (35.37 %) and water vapor permeability (WVP) (32.79 %) and the increases of tensile strength (TS) (125 %), elongation at break (EAB) (2.74 %) and opacity (131.08 %). Antifungal capacity of the CH film was enhanced when GO was added to the film. The CH + GO film showed a less homogeneous surface that the presence of the oil droplets on the film surface. Moreover, the CH and CH + GO coatings reduced weight loss of persimmon by 14.87 %, and 21.13 %, respectively, compared to the control. Moisture content loss of the coated CH- and the coated CH + GO- persimmons was decreased by 1.94 % and 4.92 %, respectively, compared to that of the control persimmon. Furthermore, the CH and CH + GO coatings decreased in color changes, respiration rate, ethylene production, changes in pH and TSS, and remained firmness of persimmon during storage at 25 °C. In addition, X-ray CT images can be used to monitor internal changes and observe the tissue breakdown during storage period. The ΔGS value can be used as a predictor of persimmon internal qualities. Thus, the CH film containing GO can be applied as an active packaging material.

Ternary composite degradable plastics based on Alpinia galanga essential oil Pickering emulsion templates: A potential multifunctional active packaging

To reduce the use of petroleum-based plastics and explore multifunctional plastics, this study was conducted to prepare ternary composite plastics by doping Pickering emulsions containing Alpinia galanga essential oil into a polymer network consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol)-acetylated pullulan polysaccharides. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that although incompatible components were present in the composite plastic, compatibility improved with the addition of pullulan polysaccharides, resulting in smooth surfaces and cross-sections, which was consistent with the observation of continuous dark zones and low relative roughness (Ra = 5.51) in Atomic force microscopy. Further, Fourier transform spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction characterization revealed that the composite plastic disrupted the molecular and crystalline structures of the pure PVA, causing the stretching vibration of -OH and the decrease of relative crystallinity. Moreover, this plastic performed optimally at a PVA to pullulan polysaccharide ratio of 75:25, exhibiting good thermal (13.12 J/g) and mechanical properties, low water absorption (70.71 %) and water vapor transmission (1.80 × 10-3 g/m2 s), as well as excellent degradability. In addition, Alpinia galanga essential oil components in the composite plastic provided favorable antioxidant scavenging of DPPH and ABTS and inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Chicken meat packaging revealed that the plastic maintained sensory parameters such as pH and color by inhibiting the oxidation of proteins and lipids during shelf-life. The findings provide insights into developing innovative, green, multifunctional packaging and broaden the in-depth application of Alpinia galanga essential oil.

Nanoemulsion-integrated gelatin/bacterial cellulose nanofibril-based multifunctional film: Fabrication, characterization, and application

The current requirements of food safety regulations and the environmental impact stemming from plastic packaging can only be addressed by developing suitable bio-nanocomposite films. Therefore, this study is dedicated to the fabrication of multifunctional film composed of gelatin, bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCNF), and black pepper essential oil nanoemulsion (BPEONE) and application for duck meat preservation. BCNF was prepared through ultrasonication of cellulose derived from Komagataeibacter xylinus. BPEONE observed spherical morphology with a diameter ranging from 83.7 to 118 nm. A film matrix containing a higher gelatin proportion than BCNF was more effective in trapping BPEONE. However, increasing the BPEONE fraction showed more surface abrasion and voids in the film morphology. A flexible film with good interaction, crystallinity, and greater thermal stability (421 °C) was developed. Nevertheless, film hydrophobicity (118.89°) declined, resulting in a notable effect on water solubility, swelling, and water vapor permeability. Moreover, the film had improved antibacterial and antioxidant activities, coupled with controlled release characteristics. Consequently, the developed film effectively retarded the lipid oxidation, inhibited microbial growth, and extended the shelf life of duck meat at refrigeration (4 °C) by 3 days, and made the film a promising alternative in the realm of bio-active packaging technology.

Characterizations of Water-Soluble Chitosan/Curdlan Edible Coatings and the Inhibitory Effect on Postharvest Pathogenic Fungi

This study focused on developing a composite coating comprising water-soluble chitosan (CTS) and curdlan (CUR). Cherry tomatoes served as the test material for assessing the preservative efficacy of these coatings. The incorporation of CUR markedly enhanced the coating's surface properties, refined its molecular structure, and improved its tensile strength and elongation at break. Additionally, the coating demonstrated enhanced permeability to water vapor, oxygen, and carbon dioxide and improved light transmission. The storage experiment, conducted at 25 ± 1 °C with a relative humidity of approximately 92% over 10 days, revealed that the CTS/CUR composite coating at a 1:1 ratio significantly outperformed the individual CTS or CUR coating and uncoated samples in maintaining the quality of postharvest cherry tomatoes. The 1:1 CTS/CUR composite coating demonstrated superior preservative effects. This study suggested that water-soluble chitosan/curdlan composite coatings have considerable potential for use in the preservation of postharvest fruits and vegetables.

Chitosan-Polyvinyl Alcohol Nanocomposites for Regenerative Therapy

Tissue accidents provide numerous pathways for pathogens to invade and flourish, causing additional harm to the host tissue while impeding its natural healing and regeneration. Essential oils (EOs) exhibit rapid and effective antimicrobial properties without promoting bacterial resistance. Clove oils (CEO) demonstrate robust antimicrobial activity against different pathogens. Chitosan (CS) is a natural, partially deacetylated polyamine widely recognized for its vast antimicrobial capacity. In this study, we present the synthesis of four membrane formulations utilizing CS, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and glycerol (Gly) incorporated with CEO and nanobioglass (n-BGs) for applications in subdermal tissue regeneration. Our analysis of the membranes' thermal stability and chemical composition provided strong evidence for successfully blending polymers with the entrapment of the essential oil. The incorporation of the CEO in the composite was evidenced by the increase in the intensity of the band of C-O-C in the FTIR; furthermore, the increase in diffraction peaks, as well as the broadening, provide evidence that the introduction of CEO perturbed the crystal structure. The morphological examination conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the incorporation of CEO resulted in smooth surfaces, in contrast to the porous morphologies observed with the n-BGs. A histological examination of the implanted membranes demonstrated their biocompatibility and biodegradability, particularly after a 60-day implantation period. The degradation process of more extensive membranes involved connective tissue composed of type III collagen fibers, blood vessels, and inflammatory cells, which supported the reabsorption of the composite membranes, evidencing the material's biocompatibility.

Microencapsulation of Juniper and Black Pepper Essential Oil Using the Coacervation Method and Its Properties after Freeze-Drying

Essential oils are mixtures of chemical compounds that are very susceptible to the effects of the external environment. Hence, more attention has been drawn to their preservation methods. The aim of the study was to test the possibility of using the classical model of complex coacervation for the microencapsulation of essential oils. Black pepper (Piper nigrum) and juniper (Juniperus communis) essential oils were dissolved in grape seed (GSO) and soybean (SBO) oil to minimize their loss during the process, and formed the core material. Various mixing ratios of polymers (gelatin (G), gum Arabic (GA)) were tested: 1:1; 1:2, and 2:1. The oil content was 10%, and the essential oil content was 1%. The prepared coacervates were lyophilized and then screened to obtain a powder. The following analyses were determined: encapsulation efficiency (EE), Carr index (CI), Hausner ratio (HR), solubility, hygroscopicity, moisture content, and particle size. The highest encapsulation efficiency achieved was within the range of 64.09-59.89%. The mixing ratio G/GA = 2:1 allowed us to obtain powders that were characterized by the lowest solubility (6.55-11.20%). The smallest particle sizes, which did not exceed 6 μm, characterized the powders obtained by mixing G/GA = 1:1. All powder samples were characterized by high cohesiveness and thus poor or very poor flow (CI = 30.58-50.27, HR = 1.45-2.01).

Optimization and characterization of carrageenan/gelatin-based nanogel containing ginger essential oil enriched electrospun ethyl cellulose/casein nanofibers

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of nano-gels containing ginger essential oil (GEO) (NGs) made from gelatin and carrageenan gum on ethyl cellulose/casein nano-fibers (NFs). For this purpose, the mechanical, thermal, morphological, antibacterial, antioxidant, hemocompatibility, and biocompatibility properties of the NFs were assessed. It was observed that incorporating NGs into ethyl cellulose/casein NFs improved their morphology, porosity, mechanical properties, and thermal stability. Analysis of the SEM images revealed that adding NGs resulted in NFs with appropriate morphology, devoid of beads, and smaller diameters. The NFs containing NGs exhibited favorable antioxidant properties and inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Cell viability studies demonstrated that none of the NFs were toxic to normal cells (Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC)) and exhibited hemocompatibility. Considering these properties, ethyl cellulose/casein NFs containing NGs and GEO can be utilized as food packaging materials.

Analysis of the Antibacterial Properties of Compound Essential Oil and the Main Antibacterial Components of Unilateral Essential Oils

Plant essential oils are widely used in food, medicine, cosmetics, and other fields because of their bacteriostatic properties and natural sources. However, the bacteriostatic range of unilateral essential oils is limited, and compound essential oil has become an effective way to improve the antibacterial properties of unilateral essential oils. In this study, based on the analysis of the antibacterial properties of Chinese cinnamon bark oil and oregano oil, the proportion and concentration of the compound essential oil were optimized and designed, and the antibacterial activity of the compound essential oil was studied. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of Chinese cinnamon bark oil was higher than that of oregano oil. The compound essential oil prepared by a 1:1 ratio of Chinese cinnamon bark oil and oregano oil with a concentration of 156.25 ppm showed an excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The GC-MS results showed that cinnamaldehyde was the main antibacterial component of Chinese cinnamon bark essential oil, and carvacrol and thymol in oregano oil were the main antibacterial components.

Trends in Food Pathogens Risk Attenuation

Foodborne pathogens represent one of the most dangerous threats to public health along the food chain all over the world. Over time, many methods were studied for pathogen inhibition in food, such as the development of novel packaging materials with enhanced properties for microorganisms' growth inhibition (coatings, films) and the use of emerging technologies, like ultrasound, radio frequency or microwave. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current trends in the food industry for pathogenic microorganisms' inhibition and food preservation in two directions, namely technology used for food processing and novel packaging materials development. Five technologies were discussed in this study, namely high-voltage atmospheric cold plasma (HVACP), High-Pressure Processing (HPP), microwaves, radio frequency (RF) heating and ultrasound. These technologies proved to be efficient in the reduction of pathogenic microbial loads in different food products. Further, a series of studies were performed, related to novel packaging material development, by using a series of antimicrobial agents such as natural extracts, bacteriocins or antimicrobial nanoparticles. These materials proved to be efficient in the inhibition of a wide range of microorganisms, including Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, fungi and yeasts.

Fabrication, characterization and antimicrobial activity of chitosan/tragacanth gum/polyvinyl alcohol composite films incorporated with cinnamon essential oil nanoemulsion

The aim of this investigation was to prepare and characterize active composite films made of chitosan (CS), tragacanth gum (TG), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and loaded with different concentrations of cinnamon essential oil (CEO) nanoemulsion (CEO, 2 and 4 % v/v). For this purpose, the amount of CS was fixed and the ratio of TG to PVA (90:10, 80:20, 70:30, and 60:40) was considered variable. The physical (thickness and opacity), mechanical, antibacterial and water-resistance properties of the composite films were evaluated. According to the microbial tests, the optimal sample was determined and evaluated with several analytical instruments. CEO loading increased the thickness and EAB of composite films, while decreasing light transmission, tensile strength, and water vapor permeability. All the films containing CEO nanoemulsion had antimicrobial properties, but this activity was higher against Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus) than Gram-negative types (Escherichia coli (O157:H7) and Salmonella typhimurium). According to the results of attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), the interaction between the components of the composite film was confirmed. It can be concluded that the CEO nanoemulsion can be incorporated in CS/TG/PVA composite films and successfully used as active and environmentally friendly packaging.

Gelatin Improves the Performance of Oregano Essential Oil Nanoparticle Composite Films-Application to the Preservation of Mullet

In this study, the addition of oregano oil chitosan nanoparticles (OEO-CSNPs) was conducted to enhance the comprehensive properties of gelatin films (GA), and the optimal addition ratio of nanoparticles was determined for its application in the preservation of mullet. Oregano oil chitosan nanoparticles were organically combined with gelatin at different concentrations (0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8%) to obtain oregano oil-chitosan nanoparticle-GA-based composite films (G/OEO-CSNPs), and thereafter G/OEO-CSNPs were characterized and investigated for their preservative effects on mullet. Subsequent analysis revealed that OEO-CSNPs were uniformly dispersed in the GA matrix, and that G/OEO-CSNPs had significantly improved mechanical ability, UV-visible light blocking performance and thermal stability. Furthermore, the nanoparticles exhibited excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and they improved the films' suitability as edible packaging. The attributes of the G/OEO-CSNPs were optimized, the films had the strongest radical scavenging and lowest water solubility, and electron microscopy also showed nanoparticle penetration into the polymer when the concentration of OEO-CSNPs was 6% (thickness = 0.092 ± 0.001, TS = 47.62 ± 0.37, E = 4.06 ± 0.17, water solubility = 48.00 ± 1.11). Furthermore, the GA-based composite film containing 6% OEO-CSNPs was able to inhibit microbial growth, slow fat decomposition and protein oxidation, reduce endogenous enzyme activity, and delay the spoilage of mullet during the refrigeration process, all of which indicate its excellent potential for meat preservation application.

Development of fish gelatin/carrageenan/zein bio-nanocomposite active-films incorporated with turmeric essential oil and their application in chicken meat preservation

Gelatin/carrageenan (Ge/Car) active packaging films incorporated with turmeric essential oil (TEO) encapsulated in zein nanoparticles (ZNP) were developed. The efficacy of these active packaging films and their antimicrobial properties were also investigated to ensure their practical application. Three different types of nanocomposite films (Ge/Car, Ge/Car/TEO, and Ge/Car/ZNP) were prepared. The characterization of the films was elucidated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analyses (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Physicochemical and mechanical properties of the films were enhanced, owing to the application of TEO-containing nanocomposites. Supercritical-CO₂ extracted TEO showed excellent biological activities, alongside GC-MS analysis identified that TEO contained 33 bioactive compounds where the major constituent was Zingiberene. ZNP proved an excellent carrier of TEO. The nanocomposite film sustainably released TEO, improving the shelf life of the chicken meat by reducing bacterial colonies from 3.08 log CFU/g to 2.81 log CFU/g after 14 days incubation against Salmonella enterica compared with 6.66 log CFU/g observed in the control film. The overall results of this study suggest that the nanocomposite active film is an excellent candidate for food packaging to ensure a better world.

Stability and bioactivity evaluation of black pepper essential oil nanoemulsion

Black pepper essential oil has the same disadvantages as other plant essential oils, such as volatilization, high sensitivity to light and heat and poor water solubility, which leads to great limitations in application. This study improved the stability and antibacterial properties of black pepper essential oil (BPEO) based on a nano-emulsification process. Tween 80 was selected as the emulsifier to prepare the BPEO nanoemulsion. Gas chromatograph - mass spectrometer (GC-MS) was used to analyze the composition of BPEO, of which d-limonene was the main component (37.41%). After emulsification, black pepper nanoemulsion was obtained (droplet size was 11.8 nm). The water solubility and stability of the emulsions at 25 °C were also improved with decreasing particle size. Antimicrobial properties of plant pathogens (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Botryodiplodia theobromae) and foodborne pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli) were evaluated by disk diffusion and other techniques for determining minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC). With 12.5 mg mL^-1 MIC and 25 mg mL^-1 MBC, BPEO inhibited the growth of two tested plant pathogens and two foodborne pathogens. Essential oils (EO) were encapsulated in a nanoemulsion system to enhance the bacteriostatic effect of essential oils and reduce MIC and MBC concentrations. After emulsification, the biological activity (antimicrobial and antioxidant) of the BPEO nanoemulsion was considerably improved, nano-emulsification had certain significance for the study of EOs.

Blended cumin/Zanthoxylum essential oil improve the antibacterial, fresh-keeping performance and flavor of chilled fresh mutton

Microbial pollution and fat oxidation are the main factors that induce the deterioration in the quality of chilled fresh mutton. This study evaluated the effects of cumin (Cuminum cyminum) essential oil (CEO), Zanthoxylum essential oil (ZEO), and blended cumin/zanthoxylum essential oil (BEO) on the antibacterial, preservation of freshness, and flavor improvement of chilled fresh mutton. The results show that BEO exerts a good inhibition effect on microbial growth, lipid oxidation, and the formation of TVB-N, as well as slowing down the rate of juice loss under chilled conditions. GC-IMS assay results showed that BEO can enrich the flavor of roasted mutton with a higher level of volatile organic substances, such as ethyl acetate D. In conclusion, BEO treatments were more efficient than single treatments in ensuring the quality of lamb to improve microbiological safety and improve the flavor of roasted lamb stored under chilled conditions. Overall research indicates that BEO is an effective natural addition that can be used to preserve the quality and safety of chilled fresh mutton during storage.

Wound healing promotion by flaxseed extract-loaded polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan nanofibrous scaffolds

Impaired wound healing is a severe complication of sufferers, related to prolonged wound closure, a high infection rate, and eventually disabilities of organs. To aid resolve this issue, we developed the electrospun polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan (PVA/CS) nanofibrous scaffold-loaded flaxseed extract. The scaffold containing 10 wt% of the extract indicated a three-dimensional cross-network with a nano-scale diameter (257 ± 37 nm) and smooth surface. Also, the relevant analyses confirmed high water absorption, porosity, and wettability of the scaffold. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), degradation, and mechanical studies revealed the intact presence and loading of the extract into the scaffold, the complete degradation over 48 h, and a high tensile elastic modulus. Besides, the advanced scaffold displayed remarkable anti-oxidant and could inhibit the growth of both Gram-positive and negative bacteria compared to the free PVA/CS scaffold. Desired fibroblast viability and blood compatibility of flaxseed-loaded scaffold endorsed the biocompatibility for wound zones. The in vitro studies showed that the flaxseed-loaded scaffold resulted in an accelerated wound healing process and 100 % closure of the scratched area within 48 h. The results obtained reveal that the flaxseed-loaded PVA/CS electrospun scaffold could be effectively applied for wound healing promotion.

Production, characterization, and antimicrobial activity of almond gum/polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan composite films containing thyme essential oil nanoemulsion for extending the shelf-life of chicken breast fillets

In this study, thyme essential oil (TEO) nanoemulsion was immobilized within composite films based on almond gum (AG), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and chitosan (CS). The physical, mechanical, water barrier, microstructural and antimicrobial properties of composite films were assessed. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the intermolecular interactions in the composite film matrix. The results indicated that the incorporation of TEO into the composite films increased thickness, moisture content, and water vapor permeability, while it reduced light transmittance and transparency value. The antimicrobial activity of films against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria was tested using a disc diffusion method. The effect of composite on the microbiological properties of chicken breast fillets was investigated during refrigerated storage for 21 days. The microbial populations of total mesophilic, psychrotrophic, and lactic acid bacteria of the samples that were coated with the composite containing TEO were lower than the permitted limit after 21 days while for blank samples they were higher than 7 log CFU/g after 7 days which is considered as the maximum acceptable total count limit. Results disclosed that AG/PVA/CS composite films containing TEO nanoemulsion can be applied as eco-friendly active food packaging to enhance the shelf-life of food products.

Physicochemical and Antimicrobial Characterization of Chitosan and Native Glutinous Rice Starch-Based Composite Edible Films: Influence of Different Essential Oils Incorporation

Biopolymer-based edible packaging is an effective way of preserving food while protecting the environment. This study developed an edible composite film using chitosan and native glutinous rice starch (NGRS) and incorporated essential oils (EOs) such as garlic, galangal, turmeric, and kaffir lime at fixed concentrations (0.312 mg/mL) to test its physicochemical and antimicrobial properties. The EO-added films were found to significantly improve the overall color characteristics (lightness, redness, and yellowness) as compared to the control film. The control films had higher opacity, while the EO-added films had slightly reduced levels of opacity and produced clearer films. The tensile strength and elongation at break values of the films varied among the samples. The control samples had the highest tensile strength, followed by the turmeric EO-added samples. However, the highest elongation at break value was found in the galangal and garlic EO-added films. The Young's modulus results showed that garlic EO and kaffir lime EO had the lowest stiffness values. The total moisture content and water vapor permeability were very low in the garlic EO-added films. Despite the differences in EOs, the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) patterns of the tested films were similar among each other. Microstructural observation of the surface and cross-section of the tested edible film exhibited smooth and fissureless patterns, especially in the EO-added films, particularly in the galangal and kaffir lime EO-added films. The antimicrobial activity of the EO-added films was highly efficient against various gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens. Among the EO-added films, the garlic and galangal EO-added films exhibited superior inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas fluorescence, and turmeric and kaffir lime EO-added films showed potential antimicrobial activity against Lactobacillus plantarum and L. monocytogenes. Overall, this study concludes that the addition of EOs significantly improved the physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of the CH-NGRS-based edible films, making them highly suitable for food applications.

Biopolymer Food Packaging Films Incorporated with Essential Oils

Petroleum-based packaging materials are typically nonbiodegradable, which leads to significant adverse environmental and health issues. Therefore, developing novel efficient, biodegradable, and nontoxic food packaging film materials has attracted increasing attention from researchers. Due to significant research and advanced technology, synthetic additives in packaging materials are progressively replaced with natural substances such as essential oils (EOs). EOs demonstrate favorable antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which would be an economical and effective alternative to synthetic additives. This review summarized the possible antioxidant and antimicrobial mechanisms of various EOs. We analyzed the properties and performance of food packaging films based on various biopolymers incorporated with EOs. The progress in intelligent packaging materials has been discussed as a prospect of food packaging materials. Finally, the current challenges regarding the practical application of EOs-containing biopolymer films in food packaging and areas of future research have been summarized.

Fabrication and Characterization of β-Cyclodextrin/Mosla Chinensis Essential Oil Inclusion Complexes: Experimental Design and Molecular Modeling

Essential oils (EOs) are primarily isolated from medicinal plants and possess various biological properties. However, their low water solubility and volatility substantially limit their application potential. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to improve the solubility and stability of the Mosla Chinensis (M. Chinensis) EO by forming an inclusion complex (IC) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Furthermore, the IC formation process was investigated using experimental techniques and molecular modeling. The major components of M. Chinensis 'Jiangxiangru' EOs were carvacrol, thymol, o-cymene, and terpinene, and its IC with β-CD were prepared using the ultrasonication method. Multivariable optimization was studied using a Plackett-Burman design (step 1, identifying key parameters) followed by a central composite design for optimization of the parameters (step 2, optimizing the key parameters). SEM, FT-IR, TGA, and dissolution experiments were performed to analyze the physicochemical properties of the ICs. In addition, the interaction between EO and β-CD was further investigated using phase solubility, molecular docking, and molecular simulation studies. The results showed that the optimal encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of EO in the ICs were 86.17% and 8.92%, respectively. Results of physicochemical properties were different after being encapsulated, indicating that the ICs had been successfully fabricated. Additionally, molecular docking and dynamics simulation showed that β-CD could encapsulate the EO component (carvacrol) via noncovalent interactions. In conclusion, a comprehensive methodology was developed for determining key parameters under multivariate conditions by utilizing two-step optimization experiments to obtain ICs of EO with β-CD. Furthermore, molecular modeling was used to study the mechanisms involved in molecular inclusion complexation.

Preparation and characterization of chitosan/whey isolate protein active film containing TiO2 and white pepper essential oil

Active packaging films are designed to improve quality and extend the food shelf life by incorporating functional active ingredients into biopolymer films. This study developed a bioactive film based on chitosan (CS) and whey isolated protein (WPI) incorporated with 0.01 wt% TiO2 and 0.1 wt% white pepper essential oil (WPEO). The physicochemical properties of the prepared film were also evaluated comprehensively. The results showed that water solubility and water vapor permeability of the film incorporated with TiO2 and WPEO were 25.09% and 0.0933 g mm m–2 h–1 KPa–1, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of other films (P < 0.05). In addition, the UV barrier properties of films incorporating TiO2 and WPEO have improved. The films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The FTIR results showed interactions between TiO2 and WPEO with CS/WPI compound, and the SEM results indicated a good incorporation of TiO2 into the composite films. The antioxidative and antibacterial properties of films were significantly enhanced by incorporating WPEO. According to results, the developed biocomposite film can be considered as a packaging material.

Synergistic antibacterial mechanism of different essential oils and their effect on quality attributes of ready-to-eat pakchoi (Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis)

The mixture of garlic essential oil (GEO), ginger essential oil (GIEO) and litsea cubeba essential oil (LCEO) was prepared and its effect on the antibacterial activity of E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, as well as properties of ready-to-eat pakchoi during storage were assessed. GEO, GIEO or LCEO treatment significantly enhanced the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, resulting in disruption of the permeability of cell membrane, the leakage of cytoplasmic contents, and the alteration of the secondary structure of bacterial proteins. Meanwhile, GEO, GIEO or LCEO treatment repressed the key enzyme in tricarboxylic acid (TCA) and Hexose monophosphate pathway (HMP) cycle of E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Essential oil treatments (p < 0.05) could significantly prolong the shelf life of pakchoi, total bacterial count (TBC) values and chlorophyll content of GEO/GIEO/LCEO sample were 3.47 log cfu/g and 0.82 mg/g, respectively, after storage for 7 days. E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa counts in GEO/GIEO/LCEO samples decreased by 56.76 %, 70.10 %, 73.95 % compared to CK (no essential oil) samples. The comprehensive results from the sensory (flavor and color) and microbial analysis (especially TBC) showed that GEO/GIEO/LCEO could extend the shelf life of ready-to-eat pakchoi from 4 d to 7 d. As compared with GEO, GIEO or LCEO individually, the combination of GEO, GIEO and LCEO exhibited synergistic effect and more pronouncedly antibacterial activity to improve quality of ready-to-eat pakchoi.

Essential Oils as Antimicrobial Active Substances in Wound Dressings

Wound dressings for skin lesions, such as bedsores or pressure ulcers, are widely used for many patients, both during hospitalization and in subsequent treatment at home. To improve the treatment and shorten the healing time and, therefore, the cost, numerous types of wound dressings have been developed by manufacturers. Considering certain inconveniences related to the intolerance of some patients to antibiotics and the antimicrobial, antioxidant, and curative properties of certain essential oils, we conducted research by incorporating these oils, based on polyvinyl alcohol/ polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVA/PVP) biopolymers, into dressings. The objective of this study was to study the potential of a polymeric matrix for wound healing, with polyvinyl alcohol as the main material and polyvinyl pyrrolidone and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as secondary materials, together with additives (plasticizers poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and glycerol), stabilizers (Zn stearate), antioxidants (vitamin A and vitamin E), and four types of essential oils (fennel, peppermint, pine, and thyme essential oils). For all the studied samples, the combining compatibility, antimicrobial, and cytotoxicity properties were investigated. The obtained results demonstrated a uniform morphology for almost all the samples and adequate barrier properties for contact with suppurating wounds. The results show that the obtained samples containing essential oils have a good inhibitory effect on, or antimicrobial properties against, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. The MTT assay showed that the tested samples were not toxic and did not lead to cell death. The results showed that the essential oils used provide an effective solution as active substances in wound dressings.

Naringin-loaded Arabic gum/pectin hydrogel as a potential wound healing material

Wound healing is a complicated cellular process with overlapping phases. Naringin (NAR); a flavanone glycoside, possesses numerous pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-apoptotic effects. In the current study, Arabic gum (AG)/pectin hydrogel was utilized to encapsulate NAR. Drug-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel exhibited excellent EE% of about 99.88 ± 0.096 and high DL% of about 16.64 ± 0.013. The formulated drug-loaded hydrogel was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Zetasizer analyzer, besides determination of equilibrium degree of swelling (EDS%). Afterwards, wound healing potential of NAR-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel was evaluated in an in vivo animal model. Results manifested that NAR-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel was able to accelerate wound healing in terms of enhanced angiogenesis, re-epithelialization and collagen deposition. Furthermore, it significantly (P < 0.001) down-regulated the mRNA expression of inflammatory mediators (TNF-α) and apoptosis (BAX). In addition, NAR-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel was found to possess potent antioxidant activity as it enhanced the levels of SOD and GSH, besides decreasing the levels of MPO, MDA and nitrite. These data suggest that NAR-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel could be utilized in wound healing applications.

Chitosan encompassed Aniba rosaeodora essential oil as innovative green candidate for antifungal and antiaflatoxigenic activity in millets with emphasis on cellular and its mode of action

The present study demonstrates first time investigation on encapsulation of Aniba rosaeodora essential oil into chitosan nanoemulsion (AREO-CsNe) with the aim of improvement of its antifungal, and aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) inhibitory performance in real food system. The GC–MS analysis of AREO revealed the presence of linalool (81.46%) as a major component. The successful encapsulation of EO into CsNe was confirmed through SEM, FTIR, and XRD analysis. The in-vitro release study showed the controlled release of AREO. AREO-CsNe caused complete inhibition of Aspergillus flavus (AFLHPSi-1) growth and AFB₁ production at 0.8 and 0.6 μl/ml, respectively, which was far better than AREO (1.4 and 1.2 μl/ml, respectively). Impairment of ergosterol biosynthesis coupled with enhancement of cellular materials leakage confirmed plasma membrane as the possible antifungal target of both AREO and AREO-CsNe. Significant inhibition of methylglyoxal (AFB₁ inducer) synthesis in AFLHPSi-1 cells by AREO and AREO-CsNe confirmed their novel antiaflatoxigenic mode of action. In-silico molecular docking studies revealed effective interaction of linalool with Ver-1 and Omt-A proteins, leading to inhibition of AFB₁ biosynthesis. Further, AREO-CsNe showed enhanced antioxidant activity with IC₅₀ values 3.792 and 1.706 μl/ml against DPPH^• and ABTS^•+ radicals, respectively. In addition, AREO-CsNe caused 100% protection of stored millets (Setaria italica seeds) from AFB₁ contamination and lipid peroxidation over a period of 1 year without compromising its sensory properties and exhibited high safety profile with LD₅₀ value 9538.742 μl/kg body weight. Based on enhanced performance of AREO-CsNe over AREO, it can be recommended as a novel substitute of synthetic preservative for preservation of stored millets.

Polyvinyl alcohol/gum Arabic hydrogel preparation and cytotoxicity for wound healing improvement

The application of pure polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel as wound dressing faces many restrictions due to its insufficient elasticity, stiff membrane, and very limited hydrophilicity. These drawbacks can be limited through cross-linking with other natural biopolymers such as gum Arabic (GA). PVA hydrogels blended with six different GA concentrations were prepared. The characterization of these hydrogels was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope. The swelling ratio (% SR) percentage has been calculated. The possible cytotoxicity was determined using a sulforhodamine B assay. Wound healing test was performed on human skin fibroblast cells. Our results indicated that by increasing GA concentration in PVA hydrogel, the % SR increases and the cytotoxicity effect decreases. The results indicate also a significant gradual decrease in the wound area with time as the GA concentration increases in the PVA hydrogel. Therefore, GA improves the biological applications of PVA hydrogel.

Preparation, characterization and food packaging application of nano ZnO@Xylan/quaternized xylan/polyvinyl alcohol composite films

Xylan could be considered as a good potential candidate for food packaging film because of the vast source and biodegradability, however, its application was restricted by the drawbacks of poor film-forming property, humidity sensitivity, weak mechanical strength and poor antibacterial property. In this paper, xylan was firstly modified by quaternization to improve the film-forming property, then ZnO nanoparticles encapsulated by xylan (nano ZnO@Xylan) was prepared by nanoprecipitation method, finally a series of biodegradable composite films were prepared using quaternized xylan and polyvinyl alcohol with incorporation of nano ZnO@Xylan. The surface morphology, molecular structure and crystallography structure of the films were characterized. The addition of nano ZnO@Xylan decreased water vapor permeability and solubility, meanwhile obviously increased the ultraviolet shielding performance as well as the antibacterial properties of the films. The bacteriostasis rate of the films against E. coli and S. aureus reached up to 99 %. Furthermore, the preservation time of cherry tomatoes covered with ZnO@Xylan/QX/PVA films was extended to at least 21 days. In conclusion, all the results ensure that the fabricated composite films have considerable promising application in the food packaging industry.

Exploration of multifunctional properties of garlic skin derived cellulose nanocrystals and extracts incorporated chitosan biocomposite films for active packaging application

For many years, garlic has been used as a condiment in food and traditional medicine. However, the garlic skin, which accounts for 25% of the garlic bulk, is considered agricultural waste. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and garlic extract (GE) from garlic skin were isolated and used as fillers to manufacture biocomposite films. The films were characterized in terms of UV barrier, thermal, mechanical, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activity. The chitosan-containing films and CNCs have significantly improved the films' tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation but decreased the film transparency compared to chitosan films. The combination of the CNCs and GE, on the other hand, slightly reduced the mechanical properties. The addition of CNCs slightly decreased the film transparency, while the addition of GE significantly improved the UV barrier properties. Thermal studies revealed that the incorporation of CNC and GE had minimal effect on the thermal stability of the chitosan films. The degradability rate of the chitosan composite films was found to be higher than that of the neat chitosan films. The antimicrobial properties of films were studied against Escherichia coli, Streptomyces griseorubens, Streptomyces alboviridis, and Staphylococcus aureus, observing that their growth was considerably inhibited by the addition of GE in composite films. Films incorporating both CNCs and GE from garlic skin hold more promise for active food packaging applications due to a combination of enhanced physical characteristics and antibacterial activity.

Valorisation of lemongrass essential oils onto chitosan-starch film for sustainable active packaging: Greatly enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant activity

To meet the global demand for sustainability aspects, the past few decades have witnessed magnificent evidence in the pursuit of sustainable active food packaging. As part of our contribution, herein, we explored the utilization of chitosan (Ch) modified with Dioscorea hispida (Dh) starch and incorporated with lemongrass essential oil (LO) as an attempt to obtain a novel active packaging formulation of Ch/Dh/LO in food. To obtain the optimum formulation of Ch/Dh/LO, 15 experiments were designed using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) with Ch (1-2% w/v), Dh starch (0.5-1.5% w/v) and LO (0.25-0.75% v/v) against E. coli, S. typhi, S. aureus and S. epidermidis bacteria. The presence of LO caused enhancements in physical, mechanical, and thermal stability, along with the antimicrobial, and antioxidant activity. Additionally, molecular docking and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations of the active compounds in LO against the active site of the FtsA enzyme were provided to unveil the mechanism of antibacterial action. Ultimately, this result suggests hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions are involved between the active compounds in LO and FtsA enzymes. In general, this research provides valuable information that sheds light on the pivotal role of LO in enhancing the mechanical, thermal, and biological properties of sustainable active food packaging-based Ch film.
