Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be the primary cause of mortality worldwide, underscoring the importance of identifying additional cardiovascular risk factors. The consensus is that lipid levels alone do not fully reflect the status of atherosclerosis, thus necessitating extensive research on cardiovascular biomarkers. This review encompasses a wide spectrum of methodologies for identifying novel risk factors or biomarkers for CVD. Inflammation, oxidative stress, plaque instability, cardiac remodeling, and fibrosis play pivotal roles in CVD pathogenesis. We introduce and discuss several promising biomarkers-namely, osteocalcin, angiogenin, lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2, growth differentiation factor 15, galectin-3, growth stimulation expressed gene 2, and microRNAs, all of which have potential implications in the assessment and management of cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
The burden of cardiovascular diseases and the critical role of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in their progression underscore the need for effective diagnostic and prognostic tools. Biomarkers have emerged as crucial instruments for ACS diagnosis, risk stratification, and prognosis assessment. Among these, high-sensitivity troponin (hs-cTn) has revolutionized ACS diagnosis due to its superior sensitivity and negative predictive value. However, challenges regarding specificity, standardization, and interpretation persist. Beyond troponins, various biomarkers reflecting myocardial injury, neurohormonal activation, inflammation, thrombosis, and other pathways are being explored to refine ACS management. This review article comprehensively explores the landscape of clinically used biomarkers intricately involved in the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prognosis of ACS (i.e., troponins, creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), B-type natriuretic peptides (BNP), copeptin, C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), d-dimers, fibrinogen), especially focusing on the prognostic role of natriuretic peptides and of inflammatory indices. Research data on novel biomarkers (i.e., endocan, galectin, soluble suppression of tumorigenicity (sST2), microRNAs (miRNAs), soluble oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (sLOX-1), F2 isoprostanes, and growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15)) are further analyzed, aiming to shed light on the multiplicity of pathophysiologic mechanisms implicated in the evolution of ACS. By elucidating the complex interplay of these biomarkers in ACS pathophysiology, diagnosis, and outcomes, this review aims to enhance our understanding of the evolving trajectory and advancements in ACS management. However, further research is necessary to establish the clinical utility and integration of these biomarkers into routine practice to improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the possible role of serum galectin-3 (Gal-3) levels in the diagnosis and assessment of significant epicardial artery lesions in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS This was a single-center cross sectional cohort study including 168 subjects with suspected CAD and indications for coronary angiography divided into three groups: percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) group (N 64), coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) group (N 57), and group with no coronary stenosis (N 47). Gal-3 levels were measured and the syntax score (Ss) was calculated. RESULTS The mean value of Gal-3 in the PCI and CABG group was 19.98 ng/ml, while in the control group, it was 9.51 ng/ml (p < 0.001). The highest value of Gal-3 was found in the group of subjects with three-vessel disease (p < 0.001). When subgroups were analyzed by Gal-3 levels (< 17.8 ng/ml low, 18.8-25.9 ng/ml intermediate, > 25 ng/ml high risk) there was a significant difference between at least two Gal-3 groups for the arithmetic mean of Syntax score (p < 0.001). The syntax I's arithmetic mean at low and intermediate-risk Gal-3 levels was significantly lower than at high-risk Gal-3 levels (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Gal-3 could be used as an additional tool for diagnosis and severity assessment of atherosclerotic disease in patients with suspected CAD. Furthermore, it could help identify high-risk subjects in patients with stable CAD.

Abstract
Background New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is a common complication in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) during hospitalization. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a novel inflammation marker that is significantly associated with AF. The association between post-AMI NOAF and Gal-3 during hospitalization is yet unclear. Objective The present study aimed to investigate the predictive value of plasma Gal-3 for post-AMI NOAF. Methods A total of 217 consecutive patients admitted with AMI were included in this retrospective study. Peripheral venous blood samples were obtained within 24 h after admission and plasma Gal-3 concentrations were measured. Results Post-AMI NOAF occurred in 18 patients in this study. Patients with NOAF were older (p < 0.001) than those without. A higher level of the peak brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) (p < 0.001) and Gal-3 (p < 0.001) and a lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level (LDL-C) (p = 0.030), and an estimated glomerular filtration rate (e-GFR) (p = 0.030) were recorded in patients with post-AMI NOAF. Echocardiographic information revealed that patients with NOAF had a significantly decreased left ventricular eject fraction (LVEF) (p < 0.001) and an increased left atrial diameter (LAD) (p = 0.004) than those without NOAF. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed a significantly higher value of plasma Gal-3 in the diagnosis of NOAF for patients with AMI during hospitalization (area under the curve (p < 0.001), with a sensitivity of 72.22% and a specificity of 72.22%, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression model analysis indicated that age (p = 0.045), plasma Gal-3 (p = 0.018), and LAD (p = 0.014) were independent predictors of post-MI NOAF. Conclusions Plasma Gal-3 concentration is an independent predictor of post-MI NOAF.

Abstract
Background The relationship between galectin-3 (Gal-3) and coronary artery disease (CAD) has not been fully elucidated. Aim This study aimed to determine the relationship between the presence and severity of CAD and serum Gal-3 levels. Patients and Methods Three-hundred thirty-one consecutive CAD patients were enrolled as the study group. An additional 62 patients without CAD were enrolled as the control group. Serum Gal-3 levels were separately compared between the non-CAD and CAD groups, among the stable CAD and Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) groups, and between CAD patients with low and high SYNTAX scores (SSs). The 1-year cumulative rate of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) was also compared among ACS patients by Gal-3 levels. Results Serum Gal-3 was significantly higher in the CAD group than in the non-CAD group 3.89 (0.16–63.67) vs. 2.07 (0.23–9.38) ng/ml, P < 0.001. Furthermore, serum Gal-3 was significantly higher in the non-ST-segment elevation ACS (NSTE-ACS) group than that in the stable CAD group, 4.72 (1.0–16.14) vs. 2.23 (0.65–23.8) ng/ml, P = 0.04 and higher in the ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) group than that in the stable CAD group 7.87 (0.59–63.67) vs. 2.23 (0.65–23.8) ng/ml, P < 0.001. Serum Gal-3 level was an independent predictor of ACS compared with stable CAD group (OR = 1.131, 95% CI: 1.051–1.217, P = 0.001) as well as high SS (OR = 1.030, 95% CI: 1.021–1.047, P = 0.038) after adjust other confounding risk factors. Acute coronary syndrome patients with Gal-3 levels above the median (gal-3 = 4.78 ng/ml) showed a higher cumulative MACE rate than those with Gal-3 levels below the median. After adjusting other confounding risk factors, Gal-3 remained an independent risk factor for the cumulative rate of MACEs in ACS patients (6% higher rate of MACEs incidence per 1 ng/ml increment of Gal-3). Conclusion Galectin-3 correlated with the presence of CAD as well as coronary stability and complexity. Galectin-3 may be valuable in predicting mid-term prognosis in ACS patients.

Abstract
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) ruptures are unpredictable and lethal. A biomarker predicting AAA rupture risk could help identify patients with small, screen-detected AAAs. Galectin-3 (Gal-3), a β-galactosidase–binding lectin, is involved in inflammatory processes and may be associated with AAA incidence. We investigated whether Gal-3 can be used as a biomarker of AAA size. Plasma Gal-3 protein concentrations were examined in patients with AAA (n = 151) and control patients (n = 195) using Human ProcartaPlex multiplex and simplex kits. Circulating Gal-3 levels were significantly higher in patients with AAA than in control patients. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for Gal-3 was 0.91. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between Gal-3 level and the presence of AAA. Circulating Gal-3 levels were significantly correlated with aortic diameter in a concentration-dependent manner. In conclusion, higher plasma Gal-3 concentrations may be a useful biomarker of AAA progression.

Abstract
Aims: Alexithymia has been linked to cardiovascular disease. The aim was to explore whether the immuno-inflammatory variables galectin-3 binding protein (Gal3BP), soluble (s)CD163 and galectin-3 were independently associated with alexithymia, while controlling for known risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as depression, anxiety, impaired glycemic control, obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Methods: Cross-sectional design. The participants were consecutively recruited from one diabetes out-patient clinic. Alexithymia, depression and anxiety were assessed by self-report instruments. Blood samples, anthropometrics, and blood pressure were collected, supplemented with data from electronic health records. High Gal3BP was defined as ≥3.3 μg/ml, high sCD163 as ≥0.6 μg/ml, high galectin-3 as ≥2.6 ng/ml, impaired glycemic control as HbA1c >70 mmol/mol (>8.6%) and abdominal obesity as waist circumference ≥ 1.02 m for men and ≥ 0.88 m for women. Results: Two hundred and ninety two patients participated (men 56%, aged 18-59 years, alexithymia prevalence 15%). Patients with alexithymia had higher prevalence of depression (34 vs. 6%, p < 0.001), anxiety (61 vs. 30%, p < 0.001), high Gal3BP levels (39 vs. 17%, p = 0.004), high HbA1c levels (46 vs. 24%, p = 0.006), and abdominal obesity (29 vs. 15%, p = 0.045). Depression [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 6.5, p < 0.001], high Gal3BP levels (AOR 2.4, p = 0.035), and age (AOR 0.96, p = 0.027) were independently associated with alexithymia. Abdominal obesity (AOR 4.0, p < 0.001), high Gal3BP levels (AOR 2.8, p = 0.002), and depression (AOR 2.9, p = 0.014) were associated with high HbA1c. Abdominal obesity and anxiety were associated [Crude odds ratio (COR) 2.4, p = 0.006]. Conclusions: T1D patients with alexithymia had higher prevalence of high Gal3BP levels, depression, impaired glycemic control, anxiety, and abdominal obesity, which are known risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Only high Gal3BP levels, depression, and younger age were independently associated with alexithymia in adult patients with T1D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low levels of the soluble tumour necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK) and depression are linked to cardiovascular disease. Galectin-3, inadequate glycemic control and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels were previously linked to depression in these patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The main aim was to explore whether sTWEAK was associated with depression. A secondary aim was to explore diabetes related variables associated with low sTWEAK. METHODS Cross-sectional design. T1DM patients (n = 283, men 56%, age18-59 years) were consecutively recruited from one specialist diabetes clinic. Depression was defined as Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Depression sub scale ≥8 points. Blood samples, anthropometrics and blood pressure were collected, supplemented with data from electronic health records. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays were used to measure sTWEAK and galectin-3. Low sTWEAK was defined as < 7.2 ng/ml and high galectin-3 as ≥2.6 ng/ml. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed, calibrated and validated for goodness of fit. We adjusted for age, sex, diabetes duration, galectin-3, metabolic variables, serum-creatinine, smoking, physical inactivity, medication, and cardiovascular complications. RESULTS For 29 depressed versus 254 non-depressed patients the prevalence rates were for low sTWEAK: 93 and 68% (p = 0.003) and for high galectin-3: 34 and 13% (p = 0.005) respectively. HDL-cholesterol levels were lower for the depressed (p = 0.015). Patients with low sTWEAK versus high sTWEAK had lower usage of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) (6% versus 17%, p = 0.005). Low sTWEAK (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 9.0, p = 0.006), high galectin-3 (AOR 6.3, p = 0.001), HDL-cholesterol (per mmol/l) (AOR 0.1, p = 0.006), use of antidepressants (AOR 8.4, p < 0.001), and age (per year) (AOR 1.05, p = 0.027) were associated with depression. CSII (AOR 0.3, p = 0.003) and depression (AOR 7.1, p = 0.009) were associated with low sTWEAK. CONCLUSIONS Lower levels of sTWEAK and HDL-cholesterol and higher levels of galectin-3 were independently associated with depression in T1DM. These factors might all contribute to the increased risk for cardiovascular disease and mortality previously demonstrated in patients with depression. CSII (inversely) and depression were independently associated with low sTWEAK levels.

Abstract
Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a 26-kDa lectin that regulates many aspects of inflammatory cell behavior. We assessed the hypothesis that increased levels of Gal-3 contribute to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) progression by enhancing monocyte chemoattraction through macrophage activation. We analyzed the plasma levels of Gal-3 in 76 patients with AAA (AAA group) and 97 controls (CTL group) as well as in angiotensin II (Ang-II)-infused ApoE knockout mice. Additionally, conditioned media (CM) were used to polarize THP-1 monocyte to M1 macrophages with or without Gal-3 inhibition through small interfering RNA targeted deletion to investigate whether Gal-3 inhibition could attenuate macrophage-induced inflammation and smooth muscle cell (SMC) apoptosis. Our results showed a markedly increased expression of Gal-3 in the plasma and aorta in the AAA patients and experimental mice compared with the CTL group. An in vitro study demonstrated that the M1 cells exhibited increased Gal-3 expression. Gal-3 inhibition markedly decreased the quantity of macrophage-induced inflammatory regulators, including IL-8, TNF-α, and IL-1β, as well as messenger RNA expression and MMP-9 activity. Moreover, Gal-3-deficient CM weakened SMC apoptosis through Fas activation. These findings prove that Gal-3 may contribute to AAA progression by the activation of inflammatory macrophages, thereby promoting SMC apoptosis.

Abstract
Galectins are an ancient family of lectins characterized by evolutionarily conserved amino acid sequences and β-galactoside recognition and binding sites. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is one of 15 known galectins. This protein has important functions in numerous biological activities, including cardiac fibrosis and heart failure. In recent years, many studies have shown that Gal-3 is closely associated with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and may be a promising biomarker for the assessment of severity as well as prognosis prediction in AMI patients, but controversy still exists. In this review, we summarize the latest literature on the relationship between Gal-3 and unstable plaques, the secretion kinetics of Gal-3 during the acute phase of AMI, and the value of Gal-3 in the prediction of post-AMI remodeling. Finally, the possible value of Gal-3 as a biological target for AMI therapy is examined.

Abstract
Background Galectin-3 binding protein (Gal3BP), sCD163, galectin-3, and depression have been linked to cardiovascular disease and mortality. In patients with type 1 diabetes, female sex has also been linked to cardiovascular disease and mortality. The aim was to explore whether female sex, sCD163, galectin-3, and depression were associated with Gal3BP in patients with type 1 diabetes. We adjusted for metabolic variables, creatinine, smoking, physical inactivity, and cardiovascular disease. Methods Cross-sectional design. Patients with type 1 diabetes (n = 285, women 44%, age18–59 years, diabetes duration 1–55 years) were consecutively recruited from one diabetes outpatient clinic. Blood samples, anthropometrics, and blood pressure were collected, supplemented with data from electronic medical records. High Gal3BP was defined as ≥3.3 mg/l (≥80th percentile). Depression was assessed by a self-report instrument. Linear and logistic regression models were elaborated for the associations and calibrated and validated for goodness of fit with the data variables. Results Median (q1, q3) Gal3BP was 2.3 (1.8, 3.1) mg/l. The prevalence of high Gal3BP for women was 30% and 14% for men (p = 0.001). Female sex (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 3.0), sCD163 (per μg/l) (AOR 6.6), and total cholesterol (per mmol/l) (AOR 1.6) were positively associated with high Gal3BP, and HDL-cholesterol (per mmol/l) (AOR 0.2) was negatively associated with high Gal3BP. Conclusions High Gal3BP levels were associated with female sex, increasing sCD163 and total cholesterol levels, and decreasing HDL-cholesterol levels in patients with type 1 diabetes. The prevalence of high Gal3BP was more than twice as high in the women as in the men.

Abstract
AIMS Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is implicated in the pathogenesis of heart failure and is also influenced by ageing. This study aims to determine the extent to which Gal-3 levels estimate odds of myocardial dysfunction in ageing cohorts, 'upstream' prior to clinical disease. METHODS AND RESULTS Four hundred seventy-five asymptomatic subjects underwent simultaneous assessments of cardiovascular structure and function, with measurements of circulating Gal-3. Myocardial dysfunction was defined as impaired myocardial relaxation (ratio of peak velocity flow in early diastole E (m/s) to peak velocity flow in late diastole by atrial contraction A (m/s) <0.84) (mean E/A ratio 0.84 in the cohort). Of 475 subjects (mean age 68 ± 12 years, 231 women), 222 (47%) had myocardial dysfunction. Subjects with myocardial dysfunction were older (mean age 73 ± 5 vs. 64 ± 14 years, P < 0.0001), and more had hypertension (59 vs. 40%, P < 0.0001), dyslipidaemia (54 vs. 39%, P = 0.001), diabetes mellitus (25 vs. 14%, P = 0.002), higher body mass index (BMI) (24 vs. 23 kg/m2 , P = 0.002), and higher heart rate (76 vs. 71 b.p.m., P = 0.0001). Participants with impaired myocardial relaxation had lower peak velocity flow in early diastole E (0.6 ± 0.1 vs. 0.8 ± 0.2 m/s, P < 0.0001), higher peak velocity flow in late diastole by atrial contraction A (0.9 ± 0.1 vs. 0.7 ± 0.2 m/s, P < 0.0001), and higher mitral valve flow deceleration time (224.7 ± 43.2 vs. 204.8 ± 33.1 m/s, P < 0.0001). Participants with impaired myocardial relaxation had higher Gal-3 levels (17.2 ± 6.2 vs. 15.5 ± 4.1, P = 0.0004) but similar B-type natriuretic peptide (37 ± 4 vs. 34 ± 29, P = 0.37) and high-sensitivity troponin I (21 ± 72 vs. 11 ± 41, P = 0.061) levels and urine microalbumin-to-creatinine ratio (4.6 ± 8.1 vs. 4.2 ± 10.8, P = 0.75) compared with those without impaired myocardial relaxation. After multivariable adjustments, Gal-3 [odds ratio (OR) 1.05, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00-1.10, P = 0.039], age (OR 2.60, 95% CI 1.64-4.11, P < 0.0001), BMI (OR 2.16, 95% CI 1.44-3.23, P < 0.0001), and heart rate (OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.02-1.06, P < 0.0001) were associated with impaired myocardial relaxation. Adjusted ORs (95% CI) for myocardial dysfunction were 1.0 (ref), 1.62 (0.92-2.85), 1.92 (1.08-3.41), and 2.01 (1.11-3.66) across consecutive quartiles of Gal-3 after adjustment for age, BMI, risk factors, and heart rate. CONCLUSIONS Among asymptomatic community-dwelling elderly adults, the highest quartile of Gal-3 was associated with two-fold increased odds of myocardial dysfunction compared with the lowest quartile of Gal-3. Gal-3 may have a role as an 'upstream' biomarker in estimating odds of myocardial ageing prior to clinical disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. We thereby sought to investigate whether the biomarkers, angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL-4) and galectin-3, reflect the severity of CAD. METHODS Patients were screened based on inclusion/exclusion criteria and written informed consent was obtained from the patients. Serum ANGPTL-4 and galectin-3 was quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and correlated with the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) and GENSINI score using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and multivariate analysis. RESULTS A total of 226 patients consisting of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non-STEMI/unstable angina (USA), chronic stable angina (CSA) and normal controls (NCs) participated in the study. ANGPTL-4 and galectin-3 were significantly higher in CAD than the NC group. ANGPTL-4 showed significant negative correlation with GRACE score in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) ( r = -0.211, p = 0.03) patients. ANGPTL-4 showed significant positive correlation with serum creatinine ( r = 0.304, p = 0.056) and body mass index (BMI) ( r = 0.424, p = 0.009) in CSA patients. A modest positive correlation was observed between the serum galectin-3 levels and GRACE score ( r = 0.187, p = 0.055) in ACS patients. However, on multivariate analysis the positive correlation relationship between ANGPTL-4 and galectin-3 with the severity of CAD was not sustained. CONCLUSION In conclusion, ANGPTL-4 and galectin-3 do not appear to have a promising role for assessing the severity of CAD. Nevertheless these biomarkers do warrant further exploration in improving the management of CAD.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the expression patterns of serum galectin-1 (Gal-1), galectin-3 (Gal-3), galectin-9 (Gal-9), and galectin-3 binding protein (Gal-3BP) and their associations with stroke outcome in large artery atherosclerotic (LAA) stroke. The serum levels of Gal-1, Gal-3, Gal-9, and Gal-3BP were measured by ELISA in 130 patients with LAA stroke and 130 age- and sex-matched controls. Serum samples were collected from the patients on day 1, day 6, and in the 4th week after ischaemic stroke (IS). An unfavourable outcome was defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of >2 on day 90 after IS. Our results indicated that the Gal-3 and Gal-9 levels were higher in patients with LAA stroke than in controls. A higher Gal-3 level was independently associated with an unfavourable outcome both on day 1 and day 6 after IS. In addition, Gal-9 and Gal-1 levels were upregulated on day 6 and in the 4th week after IS, respectively. For Gal-3BP, no difference was detected between patients and controls and no predictive value was found in patients. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the serum levels of Gal-1, Gal-3, and Gal-9 may be associated with LAA stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Galectin-3 is a beta-galactoside-binding lectin that may be related to tissue sclerosis or aberrant activation of angiogenesis in systemic sclerosis (SSc). The aim of our study was to determine the associations between galectin-3 levels and patient characteristics, as well as to investigate the long term prognostic value of galectin-3 in a large cohort of SSc patients. METHODS 152 patients with SSc (55±11years, 138 female) were included in our follow-up study. Blood samples and clinical data were collected at baseline. Primary and secondary outcomes were all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, respectively. RESULTSS Galectin-3 levels showed positive correlation with the grade of left ventricular diastolic function (r=0.193; p=0.026), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r=0.172; p=0.036) and serum level of C-reactive protein (r=0.200; p=0.015) while negative correlation with diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (r=-0.228; p=0.006), in age, gender and BSA adjusted analyses. During the follow-up of 7.2±2.3years, 35 SSc patients (23%) died. In multivariate Cox regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, BSA, creatinine and NT-proBNP levels, galectin-3 was an independent predictor both of the all-cause mortality (HR: 2.780, 95% CI: 1.320-5.858, p=0.007) and cardiovascular mortality (HR: 3.346, 95% CI: 1.118-10.012, p=0.031). Using receiver-operating characteristic analysis, galectin-3>10.25ng/ml was found to be the best predictor of the all-cause mortality. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that galectin-3 is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in SSc. Validation studies are required to establish whether galectin-3 may be proposed as simple biomarker for identifying patients with high mortality risk in SSc.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine if galectin-3 levels were different between participants with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and controls, and to describe its relationship with markers of early atherosclerosis. Sixty participants were recruited into two groups: a PAD group (n=31), ankle-brachial index (ABI) ⩽0.90 and a normal ABI group (n=29), ABI 1.0-1.4. PAD participants were older (68.6 vs 61.8 years, p=0.037), more commonly men (68% vs 38%, p=0.02), and with more cardiovascular risk factors (p<0.001). Galectin-3 was 22% higher in PAD participants (mean±SD: 17.6±4.7 vs 14.4±4.1 ng/mL, p<0.01). The odds ratio for galectin-3 in PAD to be 1 ng/mL higher than the participants with normal ABI was 1.19, after adjusting by age and gender (p=0.014). High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) were positively associated with galectin-3 in the age- and gender-adjusted model, while arterial elasticity and microalbuminuria were not. In conclusion, galectin-3 levels were higher in participants with PAD.
