Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This manuscript reviews the impact of important indoor environmental exposures on pediatric asthma, with a focus on recent literature in the field. RECENT FINDINGS Studies continue to support an association between numerous indoor aeroallergens and air pollutants found in homes and schools and increased asthma morbidity overall. Several recent home and school intervention studies have shown promise, though results have been overall mixed. Indoor environmental exposures contribute to the development of asthma and impact asthma morbidity. Further research is needed to improve our understanding of how to optimize mitigation of these indoor exposures to significantly affect asthma outcomes.

Abstract
Insecticide exposure may affect childhood asthma/wheezing, but evidence is scarce in low- and middle-income countries. We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study in Sanya, China. Generalized linear models were adopted to assess the associations of insecticide exposure with childhood asthma/wheezing, reported as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A subgroup analysis was performed to explore the possible effects of sociodemographic and environmental factors on these associations. The median age of the 9754 children was 6.7 years, and 5345 (54.8%) were boys. The prevalences of ever asthma (EA), ever wheezing (EW), and current wheezing (CW) were 7.4%, 5.3%, and 2.9%, respectively. We found a greater prevalence of childhood EA with insecticide exposure (OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.00, 1.38). Outdoor insecticide exposure was associated with elevated ORs for EA (1.24, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.50), EW (1.27, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.57), and CW (1.38, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.81). The p for the trend in insecticide exposure frequency was significant for EA (p = 0.001) and CW (p = 0.034). These adverse impacts were pronounced in girls who were exposed to low temperatures. Our findings suggest adverse effects of insecticide use, especially outdoors, on childhood asthma/wheezing. Further studies are warranted to verify this association and develop tailored prevention measures.

Abstract
Background Asthma is a public health concern affecting millions of productive age groups. Several studies were conducted on the determinants of asthma in children. However, little is known about the determinants of asthma among adults in Ethiopia. Understanding the determinants of asthma among adults can help reduce its burden. This study was aimed at identifying determinant factors for developing asthma among adults in Tigray hospitals. Methods A facility-based, unmatched case-control study design was conducted from January 1 to April 26, 2019. A total of 698 participants (228 cases and 470 controls) completed their guided interviews using structured and pretested questionnaires by trained data collectors. A modified standard questionnaire from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey II (ECRHS II) was used to collect the data. The case definition was patients having asthma, and the control definition was patients without asthma. Data were entered and cleaned using Epi Data Manager Version 3.1 software and imported to statistical packages for social sciences Version 25 software for analysis. To identify asthma determinants, bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were fitted. Results The response rate for both cases and controls was 95.9%. The odds of developing asthma was nearly twice higher among those who resided in urban (AOR = 1.68; 95% CI [1.13-2.50]), more than twice higher among those who have income less than 1000 ETB (AOR = 2.3; 95% CI [1.17-4.56]), twice higher among those who had history of skin allergy (AOR = 2.09; 95% CI [1.14-3.86]), over four times higher among those with family history of asthma (AOR = 4.26; 95% CI [2.63-6.91]), three times higher among those having house dust or smoke exposure (AOR = 3.01; 95% CI [1.96-4.64]), over five times higher among those lifetime firewood users (AOR = 5.39; 95% CI [3.34-8.72]), door opening while cooking (AOR = 0.35; 95% CI [0.26-0.55]), nearly two times higher among those having house dampness (AOR = 1.98; 95% CI [1.069-3.68]), over seven times higher among pet owners (AOR = 7.46; 95% CI [4.04-13] and almost twice higher among those who were physically inactive (AOR = 1.75; 95% CI [1.11-2.85]). Conclusion Asthma has been associated with urbanization, low income, a history of allergic diseases, indoor smoke or dust, firewood use, pet ownership, and a sedentary lifestyle. The community should be informed about the known risks and implement preventive steps like opening a door while cooking to lower the risk of asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of wheeze and asthma has risen over recent decades for all age groups, especially children. These disorders can lead to decreased quality of life, missed school, urgent care and emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and increased health care costs. Environmental exposures, including pesticide exposure, are likely a contributing factor to this increased prevalence. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of pesticide exposure with childhood wheeze and asthma. METHODS We conducted a systematic review evaluating studies of pesticide exposure (measured objectively) and child respiratory outcomes. We searched PubMed, Embase (Elsevier), CINAHL (EBSCO), Scopus (Elsevier), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (Wiley), and ClinicalTrials. gov from 1988 - 2021. Main search keywords included "pesticides", "insecticides", "herbicides", "respiratory", "asthma" and "wheeze". RESULTS Out of 5767 studies, 25 met the inclusion criteria; eight evaluated prenatal pesticide exposure (n=8407), twelve evaluated postnatal exposures (n= 50,488), and five evaluated pre-and postnatal exposures (n=20,919). Main pesticides investigated were dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) (14 studies) followed by organophosphates (7 studies). Primary methods of outcome assessment were questionnaire-based (84%), followed by spirometry (16%), registry data, and blood measures. Studies varied in the strength of evidence relating to study design and measures. Most studies (84%) reported a positive association of exposure with adverse child respiratory health. CONCLUSION The studies suggest an association of pesticide exposure and childhood wheeze and asthma. The varying results and methods reinforce the need for more research and standardized approaches to these studies to confirm the suggested association of pesticide exposure and childhood wheeze and asthma.

Abstract
Human activity and increased use of fossil fuels have led to climate change. These changes are adversely affecting human health, including increasing the risk of developing asthma. Global temperatures are predicted to increase in the future. In 2019, asthma affected an estimated 262 million people and caused 455,000 deaths. These rates are expected to increase. Climate change by intensifying climate events such as drought, flooding, wildfires, sand storms, and thunderstorms has led to increases in air pollution, pollen season length, pollen and mold concentration, and allergenicity of pollen. These effects bear implications for the onset, exacerbation, and management of childhood asthma and are increasing health inequities. Global efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change are urgently needed with the goal of limiting global warming to between 1.5 and 2.0 °C of preindustrial times as per the 2015 Paris Agreement. Clinicians need to take an active role in these efforts in order to prevent further increases in asthma prevalence. There is a role for clinician advocacy in both the clinical setting as well as in local, regional, and national settings to install measures to control and curb the escalating disease burden of childhood asthma in the setting of climate change.

Abstract
Pyrethroid insecticides negatively affect feed conversion, reproductive fitness, and food safety in exposed animals. Although probiotics have previously been widely studied for their effect on gut health, comparatively little is known regarding the efficacy of probiotic administration in specifically reducing pesticide toxicity in mice. We demonstrated that oral administration of a β-cypermethrin (β-CY)-degrading bacterial strain (Bacillus cereus GW-01) to β-CY-exposed mice reduced β-CY levels in the liver, kidney, brain, blood, lipid, and feces (18%-53%). Additionally, co-administration of strain GW-01 to β-CY-exposed mice reduced weight loss (22%-31%) and improved liver function (15%-19%) in mice. Additionally, mice receiving GW-01 had near-control levels of numerous β-CY-affected gut microbial taxa, including Muribaculaceae, Alloprevotella, Bacteroides, Dubosiella, and Alistipes. The survival and β-CY biosorption of GW-01 in simulated gastrointestinal fluid conditions were significantly higher than E. coli. These results suggested that GW-01 can reduce β-CY accumulation and alleviate the damage in mice. This study is the first to demonstrate that a probiotic strain can reduce the toxicity of β-CY in mice.

Abstract
(1) Objectives: To examine the associations of child tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) with home quality and housing instability. (2) Methods. A secondary analysis of 32,066 U.S. 0-11-year-old children from the 2018-2019 National Survey of Children's Health was conducted. Child home TSE status was defined as: no TSE: child lived with no smokers; thirdhand smoke (THS) exposure only: child lived with a smoker(s) who did not smoke indoors; and secondhand smoke (SHS) and THS exposure: child lived with a smoker(s) who smoked indoors. Home quality was assessed by the presence of mold or pesticide use and housing instability was assessed by home ownership, frequency of moves, and number of household members. We conducted weighted multivariable logistic regression and linear regression models while adjusting for important child covariates. (3) Results: In total, 12.3% had home THS exposure only and 1.6% had home SHS and THS exposure. Compared to children with no home TSE, children with home SHS and THS exposure were 2.60 times more likely (95%CI = 1.73, 3.92) to have mold inside their homes; 1.57 times more likely (95%CI = 1.09, 2.26) to live in homes where pesticides were used ≥1 time during the past 12-months; and more likely to have more frequent moves (β = 1.06, 95%CI = 0.62, 1.50). (4) Conclusions: Children with home TSE have higher rates of mold, pesticide use, frequent moves, and household members compared to children with no home TSE. Children with TSE should also be screened for home quality and housing instability and provided with appropriate interventions and resources.

Abstract
Housing quality is a primary determinant of asthma disparities by race and social class in the US. We sought to assess how housing code enforcement systems in Boston, Massachusetts, address tenants' reports of asthma triggers. After adjustment for income and other neighborhood characteristics, racial demographics were significantly associated with asthma trigger incidence. For each 10 percent decrease in neighborhood proportion of White residents, trigger incidence increased by 3.14 reports per thousand residents. These disparities persisted during the study period (from 2011 through 2021), and for mold, which is an established asthma trigger, regressions showed that racial disparities are widening. The municipal response also demonstrated disparities: In neighborhoods with the fewest White residents compared to neighborhoods with the most White residents, adjusted models showed a 17 percent (3.51 days) slower median time until cases (tenant requests for inspections to the Inspectional Services Department) were closed, a 14 percent higher probability of being flagged as overdue, and a 54.4 percent lower probability of a repair. We found evidence that in Boston, despite several healthy housing initiatives, current regulatory systems are insufficient to address disparities in access to healthy housing. To reduce disparities in asthma burden, stronger inspectional standards and further enforcement policies to increase landlords' accountability and support tenants' rights to have repairs made are essential.

Abstract
Respiratory disease and its complication are the cause of children deaths worldwide every year. Several epidemiological studies pointed out an association between quality of residential in inner city and risk of children health. However, few studies had been focused in high-polluted urban area in low to middle income countries. A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the association between residential environments and respiratory symptoms including asthma among 658 primary school children living in urban area of Bangkok Thailand. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire was modified to access symptoms during the past 12 months. Binary logistic regression model was performed. Living near garment and clothing shop is associated with shortness of breath (AOR = 1.846; 95% CI 1.034, 3.297). Vectors in home is related to dry cough at night (AOR = 1.505; 95% CI 1.052, 2.153) and phlegm (AOR = 1.414; 95% CI 1.014, 1.973). Wall dampness is increased odd of having wheezing or whistling (asthma) in the chest (AOR = 1.921; 95% CI 1.141, 3.235). Children age, gender, and a family history of asthma were modified the associations. Our finding may provide strategies focusing on living environment improvement with a specific group of children to address respiratory disease prevention.
