Abstract
The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions (NEs) for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of α-tocopherol (ToC) was examined. ToC-loaded multi-layer NEs were prepared using lecithin (primary-NEs, P-NEs), chitosan (secondary-NEs, S-NEs), and dextran sulfate (tertiary-NEs, T-NEs) as wall materials. The bioadhesion, cellular permeability, and uptake of the multi-layer NEs were significantly higher than that of the free coumarin 6 (C6). As a result of cellular uptake, the mean fluorescence intensity of T-NEs was the highest among the three types of multi-layer NEs and was 9.8-fold higher than that of free C6. The cellular antioxidant abilities of P-NEs, S-NEs, and T-NEs were 40, 45, and 50 %, respectively. Multi-layer nanoencapsulation sustains free fatty acid release after digestion. Moreover, the bioavailability of T-NEs exhibited a two-fold increase compared with that of the free ToC. These findings indicate that by multi-layer NEs using a layer-by-layer method, the cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of ToC can be improved. Furthermore, T-NEs using chitosan and dextran sulfate can potentially enhance the cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of ToC. These findings would facilitate the application of multi-layer NEs for lipophilic bioactive compounds using biopolymers.

Abstract
The pharmaceutical sector has made considerable strides recently, emphasizing improving drug delivery methods to increase the bioavailability of various drugs. When used as a medication delivery method, nanoemulsions have multiple benefits. Their small droplet size, which is generally between 20 and 200 nanometers, creates a significant interfacial area for drug dissolution, improving the solubility and bioavailability of drugs that are weakly water-soluble. Additionally, nanoemulsions are a flexible platform for drug administration across various therapeutic areas since they can encapsulate hydrophilic and hydrophobic medicines. Nanoemulsion can be formulated in multiple dosage forms, for example, gels, creams, foams, aerosols, and sprays by using low-cost standard operative processes and also be taken orally, topically, topically, intravenously, intrapulmonary, intranasally, and intraocularly. The article explores nanoemulsion formulation and production methods, emphasizing the role of surfactants and cosurfactants in creating stable formulations. In order to customize nanoemulsions to particular medication delivery requirements, the choice of components and production techniques is crucial in assuring the stability and efficacy of the finished product. Nanoemulsions are a cutting-edge technology with a lot of potential for improving medication bioavailability in a variety of therapeutic contexts. They are a useful tool in the creation of innovative pharmaceutical formulations due to their capacity to enhance drug solubility, stability, and delivery. Nanoemulsions are positioned to play a crucial role in boosting medication delivery and enhancing patient outcomes as this field of study continues to advance.

Abstract
Viral diseases are emerging as global threats. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), that causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has severe global impacts. Safety, dosage, and potency of vaccines recently approved for emergency use against SARS-CoV-2 need further evaluation. There is still no effective treatment against COVID-19; therefore, safe, and effective vaccines or therapeutics against SARS-CoV-2 are urgently needed. Oil-in-water nanoemulsions (O/W NEs) are emerging as sophisticated, protective, and therapeutic platforms. Encapsulation capacity, which offers better drug pharmacokinetics, coupled with the tunable surfaces present NEs as promising tools for pharmaceutical applications. The challenges facing drug discovery, and the advancements of NEs in drug delivery demonstrate the potential of NEs against evolving diseases, like COVID-19. Here we summarize current COVID-19 knowledge and discuss the composition, stability, preparation, characterization, and biological fate of O/W NEs. We also provide insights into NE structural-functional properties that may contribute to therapeutic or preventative solutions against COVID-19.

Abstract
In the work, the kinetics of the release of vitamin E and polyphyte oil from capsules was studied using synthetic and natural systems. The release of active ingredients was monitored on a Cary 50 Cons UV spectrophotometer equipped with CaryWinUV software. The kinetics of the release of vitamin E from capsules stabilized with sodium caseinate and then coated with chitosan shows a sustained prolonged release of 20% of vitamin E within 1 h, within 5 h about 45% is released, within 48 h about 80%. It was found that the efficiency of capsulation of vitamin E is higher than that of polyphyte oil, the release of vitamin E is more delayed and prolonged in comparison with polyphyte oil. The release of vitamin E from capsules stabilized with a synthetic system polymer-surfactant / vitamin E) chitosan) polystyrene sulfonate PSS was also investigated. It was determined that the release of vitamin E from capsules stabilized by a synthetic system (polymer-surfactant and coated with two layers of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte by the Layer-by-Layer method) is prolonged, within 1 h – 23% of vitamin E is released, 70% – within 12 h and 100% – within 80 h.

Abstract
The elevated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in wounded sites triggers a series of harmful effects, including cellular senescence, fibrotic scar formation, and inflammation. Therefore, alleviating oxidative stress in the microenvironment of wounded sites might promote regenerative wound healing. Generally, ROS-scavenging nanocapsules are effective for treating wounds owing to their anti-oxidative stress activity and targeted effects. In this study, a highly versatile ferrocene functional polymer was synthesized by one-pot radical polymerization, for formulating self-assembled ferrocene nanocapsules (FNCs), which could function as smart carriers of an antioxidant, α-tocopherol (TP), with high stability and loading efficiency. The FNCs showed ROS-sensitive properties, as demonstrated using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and the controlled release of a model drug in an ROS microenvironment. The antioxidant activity of TP-loaded FNCs, analyzed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay, was significantly higher than that of unloaded TP. Furthermore, TP-loaded FNCs repressed oxidative damage to mouse NIH 3T3 fibroblasts and reduced intracellular ROS production according to an in vitro antioxidant assay. Most importantly, TP-loaded FNCs showed good biocompatibility and greatly facilitated the healing of infected wounds, as demonstrated using a scratch assay. Therefore, TP-loaded FNCs have potential as an ROS-mediated drug delivery system to treat various oxidative stress-associated diseases.

Abstract
Pterostilbene, a dimethylether analog of resveratrol, has been found to have potent biological activity. However, the bioavailability of pterostilbene in the biological system is limited due to its poor solubility in an aqueous environment. A nanoemulsion system was designed for this purpose. Lecithin-based nanoemulsion was formed after 3 cycles through a high-pressure homogenizer at 500 psi. The rheological properties and particle size were measured using dynamic light scattering and a viscometer. The storage stabilities of the prepared formulation were determined based on its ability to maintain its particle size and loading concentration. According to the experimental results, the lecithin-based nanoemulsion system contained approximately 9.5% of pterostilbene. Over the 28-day stability test, the particle size, zeta potential, and encapsulation of pterostilbene in the nanoemulsion did not change significantly, indicating good storage stability. The positive effect of the prepared nanoemulsion system on bioavailability was studied and confirmed using in vitro lipolysis and a caco-2 monolayer model.

Abstract
Lipid nanoemulsions (NEs), owing to their controllable size (20 to 500 nm), stability and biocompatibility, are now frequently used in various fields, such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, and even as nanoreactors for chemical synthesis. Moreover, being composed of components generally recognized as safe (GRAS), they can be considered as "green" nanoparticles that mimic closely lipoproteins and intracellular lipid droplets. Therefore, they attracted attention as carriers of drugs and fluorescent dyes for both bioimaging and studying the fate of nanoemulsions in cells and small animals. In this review, the composition of dye-loaded NEs, methods for their preparation, and emerging biological applications are described. The design of bright fluorescent NEs with high dye loading and minimal aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) is focused on. Common issues including dye leakage and NEs stability are discussed, highlighting advanced techniques for their characterization, such as Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Attempts to functionalize NEs surface are also discussed. Thereafter, biological applications for bioimaging and single-particle tracking in cells and small animals as well as biomedical applications for photodynamic therapy are described. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of fluorescent NEs are discussed.

Abstract
In this study, pomegranate seed oil (PSO) nanoemulsions loading different amounts of α-tocopherol (0-40%) were produced. The nanoemulsions were fabricated by ultra-sonication method and the influence of thermal treatment (20-90 °C), pH (2-8) and ionic strength (0-500 mM NaCl) were investigated on physicochemical properties of all treatments. Moreover, the oxidative stability and α-tocopherol degradation were also assessed on optimal enriched nanoemulsion formulation during 50-day storage. The droplet diameter, viscosity, antioxidant activity, encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of optimal formulation were 37.5 nm, 514 cp, 92%, 3.45% and 92.5%, respectively. The peroxide value changed in the range of 4.5-5.3 and 6.7-10.5 meq O2/kg in loaded and unloaded nanoemulsions, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated spherical morphology of nanoemulsion droplets with diameter average of 40 nm. This study suggested that PSO nanoemulsion loading α-tocopherol could be introduced as delivery system with favorable features under severe environmental conditions.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions (NEs) or nanometric-scaled emulsions are transparent or translucent, optically isotropic and kinetically stable heterogeneous system of two different immiscible liquids namely, water and oil stabilized with an amphiphilic surfactant having droplet size ranges up to 100 nm. They offer a variety of potential interests for certain applications: improved deep-rooted stability; excellent optical clarity; and, enhanced bioavailability due to its nanoscale of particles. Though there is still comparatively narrow insight apropos design, development, and optimization of NEs, which mainly stems from the fact that conventional characteristics of emulsion development and stabilization only partly apply to NEs. The contemporary article focuses on the nanoemulsion dosage form journey from concept to key application in drug delivery. In addition, industrial scalability of the nanoemulsion, as well as its presence in commercial and clinical practice, are also addressed.

Abstract
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is caused by progressive neurodegeneration of dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons with abnormal accumulation of α-synuclein in substantia nigra (SN). Studies have suggested the potential involvement of dopamine, iron, calcium, mitochondria and neuroinflammation in contributing to overwhelmed oxidative stress and neurodegeneration in PD. Function studies on PD-causative mutations of SNCA, PRKN, PINK1, DJ-1, LRRK2, FBXO7 and ATP13A2 further indicate the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of PD. Therefore, it is reasonable that molecules involved in oxidative stress, such as DJ-1, coenzyme Q10, uric acid, 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosin, homocysteine, retinoic acid/carotenes, vitamin E, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, xanthine oxidase and products of lipid peroxidation, could be candidate biomarkers for PD. Applications of antioxidants to modulate oxidative stress could be a strategy in treating PD. Although a number of antioxidants, such as creatine, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, pioglitazone, melatonin and desferrioxamine, have been tested in clinical trials, none of them have demonstrated conclusive evidence to ameliorate the neurodegeneration in PD patients. Difficulties in clinical studies may be caused by the long-standing progression of neurodegeneration, lack of biomarkers for premotor stage of PD and inadequate drug delivery across blood–brain barrier. Solutions for these challenges will be warranted for future studies with novel antioxidative treatment in PD patients.

Abstract
Today, there is a rising demand and ongoing search for novel plant-derived phytochemicals in the cosmetic market owing to the growing consumer expectations worldwide for green and natural health products. Various plant ingredients, including polyphenols, oils, volatile oils, vitamins and other herbal extracts, have been extensively used in herbal cosmetics. Recent advances in encapsulation technologies have greatly improved their chemical stability, biocompatibility, skin permeability and dermocosmetic efficiency when applied topically. This comprehensive review summarizes the up-to-date information on encapsulated plant ingredients tailored for dermocosmetic application with a focus on the development of novel delivery systems. An overview of the commonly used techniques for carrier characterization, performance-related properties and toxicological evaluation is also included, which might provide guidance for researchers to select or develop appropriate assay systems.

Abstract
An energy efficient and scalable method designed to form stable and transparent water-in-oil (W/O) nanoemulsion can be attained by optimization of process parameters and study of ternary diagram. Application of high energy in addition to the low energy at the optimized conditions have been targeted to make the process energy efficient, since later part is applied to droplets formed at less energy. In the present work, formation of combined energy mixed surfactant nanoemulsion was achieved by combined approach of isothermal low energy followed by ultrasonication that could be used as a fuel in compression ignition engine free from NOx and particulate matter emissions. A mixture of two functional groups (ether and ester) non-ionic surfactants was used at optimized ratio of 0.71/0.29 (Span 80/TX-100; w/w). Optimization of ultrasonicated parameters resulted in 25% amplitude, 0.5 pulse mode factor and 8.5 min of sonication time. A ternary diagram study was performed to recognize the compositions accountable for the formation of transparent, translucent and opaque emulsions in the bounded range of water fraction 0.02 to 0.11 and surfactant fraction 0.10 to 0.20. Surfactant-to-water (β) ratio found applicable for the production of nano-sized droplets in the range of 2 ≤ β ≤ 3. A minimum droplet size of 25 ± 1 nm was attained in the present study. An increase in surfactant fraction decreased average droplet size, whereas, increase in water fraction increased average droplet size. Reduction in droplet size was prominently found in the range of energy density from 15.23 J.ml-1 to 40 J.ml-1 thereafter, it decelerated up to 160 J.ml-1. Prediction of average droplet size modeled with energy density fitted well and could be used for scaling up and tuning the droplet size. Resultant nanoemulsion samples displayed kinetic stability whereas long term stability (45 days) assessed using Ostwald ripening model showed stability in the order of β = 2.0 > β = 2.5 > β = 3.0 > β = 4.0.

Abstract
Encapsulation of active agents, such as vitamins and antioxidants, is one of the possibilities that allow their incorporation in beverages, food, or in pharmaceutical products. Simultaneously, encapsulation protects these active agents from oxidation, producing more stable active compounds. Formation of nanodroplets by spontaneously formed microemulsion (ME) offers, on one hand, a low-energy technology of encapsulation and, on the other hand, because of a small size of the droplets, it assures long-term stability even in harsher environments. In this study, oil-in-water MEs allowed the low-energy encapsulation of α-tocopherol (αToc) into an aqueous medium with the aid of fully food-grade ingredients, using isoamyl acetate as the dispersed oil phase, which was selected between three different types of oils. Both cosurfactant-free and cosurfactant-holder ME systems were formulated, in which Tween 20 and glycerol were employed as the surfactant and the cosurfactant, respectively. The ME monophasic area was determined through the construction of pseudoternary phase diagrams. The encapsulated αToc within 10-20 nm nanocapsules showed radical scavenging activity dependent on the encapsulated amount of αToc, as it was demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The radical scavenging activity slightly increased within the time investigated, indicating a slow release of the active compound from the nanodroplets, which is a promising result for their application, especially in pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
The antioxidative and photoprotective properties of vitamin E have caused it to be included as an active agent in various pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. However, its lipophilicity, chemical instability and poor skin penetration have limited the effectiveness of these formulations. For that reason, many attempts to include it in different drug delivery systems have been made. In recent decades, lipid nanoparticles have received special attention due to their advantages of compatibility with the skin, ability to enhance penetration of drugs in the stratum corneum, protection of the encapsulated substance against degradation induced by the external medium and control of drug release. This work reviews the current status of the encapsulation of vitamin E in lipid nanoparticles. We describe the most important methods for obtaining and characterizing lipid nanoparticles containing vitamin E (LNP-VE), various techniques for the evaluation of vitamin E's properties after encapsulation, the main in vitro and in vivo studies of the potential effectiveness or toxicity of LNP-VE, the formulations and stability studies of this delivery system, the commercial products based on LNP-VE and the regulatory aspects related to lipid nanoparticles. Finally, we discuss the most relevant advantages of encapsulating vitamin E in such particles and critical aspects that still demand attention to enhance the potential of solid lipid nanoparticles to deliver vitamin E.

Abstract
Recently, nanoemulsions have been employed for different applications including food and drug industries for efficient nutrient delivery system. In this study, vitamin D (a lipophilic molecule) was encapsulated in fish oil for higher oral bioavailability. The oil-in-water nanoemulsion was formulated by ultrasonication technique with a droplet size range of 300-450nm and a shelf life of more than 90days. The influence of oil, water and surfactant concentration was investigated by phase diagram. The formulated nanoemulsion had encapsulation efficiency in the range of 95.7-98.2%. Further, nanoemulsion passed through simulated gastro-intestinal tract revealed an increased bioavailability than non-encapsulated vitamin. Thus, the formulation can be used as a drug delivery vehicle for various lipophilic compounds. Till date, no one have fabricated an efficient nano-vehicle for the delivery of vitamin D as well as analyzed the efficient delivery system in simulated GI-tract, this is first of its kind study in this regard. This can be scaled up further after analyzing the safety aspects.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions are biphasic dispersion of two immiscible liquids: either water in oil (W/O) or oil in water (O/W) droplets stabilized by an amphiphilic surfactant. These come across as ultrafine dispersions whose differential drug loading; viscoelastic as well as visual properties can cater to a wide range of functionalities including drug delivery. However there is still relatively narrow insight regarding development, manufacturing, fabrication and manipulation of nanoemulsions which primarily stems from the fact that conventional aspects of emulsion formation and stabilization only partially apply to nanoemulsions. This general deficiency sets up the premise for current review. We attempt to explore varying intricacies, excipients, manufacturing techniques and their underlying principles, production conditions, structural dynamics, prevalent destabilization mechanisms, and drug delivery applications of nanoemulsions to spike interest of those contemplating a foray in this field.

Abstract
The present work reports the ultrasound assisted preparation of mustard oil in water nanoemulsion stabilized by Span 80 and Tween 80 at different operating conditions. Effects of various operating parameters such as HLB (Hydrophilic Lipophilic Balance) value, surfactant volume fraction (φS), oil volume fraction (φO) and power amplitude were investigated and optimized on the basis of droplet size and stability of nanoemulsions. It was observed that minimum droplet size of about 87.38nm was obtained within 30min of ultrasonication at an optimum HLB value of 10, φS of 0.08 (8%, v/v), φO of 0.1 (10%, v/v) and ultrasonic power amplitude of 40%. The stability of the nanoemulsion was measured through visual observation and it was found that the unstable emulsions got separated within 24h whereas, stable emulsions never showed any separation until 90days. In addition to that, the kinetic stability of the prepared nanoemulsions was also assessed under centrifuge and thermal stress conditions. The emulsion stability was found to be unaffected by these forces as the droplet size remained unchanged. The ultrasound prepared emulsion was found to be long term stable even after 3months of storage at ambient conditions without any visual evidence of creaming and phase separation and also remained kinetically stable. FTIR analysis of the emulsions at different sonication conditions was carried out to examine the possible impact of ultrasonically induced chemical effects on oil structure during emulsification and it was found that the oil molecular structure was unaffected by ultrasonication process. The present work illustrates the formation and stability of mustard oil in water nanoemulsion using ultrasound cavitation which may be useful in food and cosmetic based applications.

Abstract
Due to susceptibility of folic acid like many other vitamins to environmental and processing conditions, it is necessary to protect it by highly efficient methods such as micro/nano-encapsulation. Our aim was to prepare and optimize real water in oil nano-emulsions containing folic acid by a low energy (spontaneous) emulsification technique so that the final product could be encapsulated within maltodextrin-whey protein double emulsions. A non ionic surfactant (Span 80) was used for making nano-emulsions at three dispersed phase/surfactant ratios of 0.2, 0.6, and 1.0. Folic acid content was 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0mg/mL of dispersed phase by a volume fraction of 5.0, 8.5, and 12%. The final optimum nano-emulsion formulation with 12% dispersed phase, a water to surfactant ratio of 0.9 and folic acid content of 3mg/mL in dispersed phase was encapsulated within maltodextrin-whey protein double emulsions. It was found that the emulsification time for preparing nano-emulsions was between 4 to 16 h based on formulation variables. Droplet size decreased at higher surfactant contents and final nano-emulsions had a droplet size<100 nm. Shear viscosity was higher for those formulations containing more surfactant. Our results revealed that spontaneous method could be used successfully for preparing stable W/O nano-emulsions containing folic acid.
