Pasture BMP effectiveness using an HRU-based subarea approach in SWAT

A quantitative approach on environment-food nexus: integrated modeling and indices for cumulative impact assessment of farm management practices

Background

Best management practices (BMPs) are promising solutions that can partially control pollution discharged from farmlands. These strategies, like fertilizer reduction and using filter strips, mainly control nutrient (N and P) pollution loads in basins. However, they have secondary impacts on nutrition production and ecosystem. This study develops a method to evaluate the cumulative environmental impacts of BMPs. It also introduces and calculates food's environmental footprint (FEF) for accounting the total environmental damages per nutrition production.

Methods

This study combines the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) for basin simulation with the indices of ReCiPe, a life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) method. By these means, the effectiveness of BMPs on pollution loads, production yields, and water footprints (WFs) are evaluated and converted as equivalent environmental damages. This method was verified in Zrebar Lake, western Iran. Here, water consumption, as WFs, and eutrophication are the main indices that are converted into equivalent health and ecological impairments. Two methods, entropy and environmental performance index (EPI), are used for weighting normalized endpoints in last step.

Results

Results showed that using 25-50% less fertilizer and water for irrigation combined with vegetated filter strips reduce N and P pollution about 34-60% and 8-21%, respectively. These can decrease ecosystem damages by 5-9% and health risks by 7-14%. Here, freshwater eutrophication is a more critical damage in ecosystem. However, using less fertilizer adversely reduces total nutrition production by 1.7-3.7%. It means that BMPs can decline total ecological damages and health risks, which threatens nutrition production. FEF presents a tool to solve this dilemma about the sustainability of BMPs. In the study area, a 4-9% decrease in FEF means that BMPs are more environmental friendly than nutrition menacing. Finally, this study concludes that SWAT-ReCiPe with FEF provides a quantitative framework for environment-food nexus assessment. However, due to the uncertainties, this method is recommended as a tool for comparing management strategies instead of reporting certain values.

Watershed-scale optimum livestock distribution and crop pattern planning constrained to the minimum nitrogen and phosphorus load in the runoff

Sustainable crop and livestock planning encounter serious challenges when tasked with reducing the associated nutrient pollution entering the watershed environment. To overcome these challenges, approaches for specifying optimal crop pattern and livestock distribution to limit the pollution in the catchment are advised. In this research, a simulation-optimization approach is used in which the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is employed for simulating the complex soil-water-plant quantity and quality relations, and the Harmony Search (HS) algorithm linked with SWAT is used to discover the optimal crop pattern and distribution of livestock in the Ilam Dam basin, Iran. In the developed HS-SWAT model, the cultivation area and the number of livestock in SWAT's hydrologic response units (HRU) are the decision variables for maximizing the net benefit obtained from the crop's and livestock's productions, while the nitrate and phosphate calculated in the outflow of the basin are restrained to meet the allowable rates. Results show that the scattered livestock in the basin have a great impact on the generated pollution where about 90% of the nitrate entering the downstream reservoir is the consequence of animal waste. In the optimum state, by reduction of the cultivation area and the number of livestock across the watershed, the concentration of N and P in the surface runoff is reduced significantly to meet the allowable level. According to the results, the HS-SWAT model performance indicates its capability for solving watershed crop pattern and livestock planning problems.

Non-Point Source Pollution Simulation and Best Management Practices Analysis Based on Control Units in Northern China

Non-point source (NPS) pollution simulation in control units can identify critical pollution source areas and make Best Management Practices (BMPs) more effective for the responsible parties. In this study, the control unit division method is introduced, and the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of NPS pollution in the Guishui River Basin of Northern China are analyzed using the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. In addition, five BMP scenarios were designed for environmental and cost-benefit analyses. The results show that the loss of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) is concentrated in the rainy season, and the loss of TN and TP is mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the main stream of the Guishui River. This area accounts for 22.34% of the basin area. The vegetated filter strips (VFS) scenario had the best environmental benefits with average TN and TP reduction efficiencies of 63.4% and 62.6%, respectively. The Grassed Waterway was the most cost-effective scenario measure, cost-benefit (CE) values of TN and TP were 1798.13 g/€ and 601.56 g/€. Generally, research on NPS pollution using control units can more clearly identify the critical source areas of pollution than other methods, and provides technical support for watershed management decision makers.

Assessing the Impacts of Best Management Practices on Nonpoint Source Pollution Considering Cost-Effectiveness in the Source Area of the Liao River, China

Agricultural nonpoint source pollution has been a major influential factor on the deterioration of water quality in the Liao River source area. Best management practices (BMPs), as a comprehensive pollution prevention system designed to reduce the impacts of agricultural activities and improve water quality, has been considered one of the most effective solutions for nonpoint source pollution control. However, economic cost has been an important element for screening the implementation of BMPs. Both pollution reduction and capital expenditure need to be resolved with the actual situation. A water quality model such as the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and empirical cost algorithm are important tools to assess the cost-effectiveness of the effects of BMPs on nonpoint source pollution. In this study, BMP scenarios including buffer strips (BSs), fertilizer reduction (FR), forest land increase (FLI), grassland increase (GLI), and their combination were implemented using the SWAT model; furthermore, the efficiency of their pollutants reduction and costs benefit were estimated in the watershed. The results showed that combined BMPs have better control effects than a single BMP, with “BS20 (widths 20 m) + FR15 (fertilization reduction 15%) + FLI (forest land increase)” arriving at the greatest loads reduction in the critical periods. From environmental and economic perspectives, the cost-effectiveness of interception measures is higher than that of the source control measures. The results indicated that BS was the most environmentally friendly practice, and FR was the most economically efficient out of all the BMPs. Regarding land-use changes, FLI was more environmentally friendly, and GLI was more economically efficient. The most economical and effective BMPs can be designated as follows: BS1.5 (widths 1.5 m) and FR15 (fertilization reduction 15%). Therefore, due to possible differences in government policies, it is important to consider an integrated approach for all the relevant actors and seek sustainable environmental and economic development.

Integrated Crop-Livestock Systems and Water Quality in the Northern Great Plains: Review of Current Practices and Future Research Needs

Integrated crop-livestock systems hold potential to achieve environmentally sustainable production of crop and livestock products. Although previous studies suggest that integrated crop-livestock systems improve soil health, impacts of integrated crop-livestock systems on water quality and aquatic ecosystems are largely unknown. This review (i) summarizes studies examining surface water quality and soil leachate for management practices commonly used in integrated crop-livestock systems (e.g., no-till, cover crops, livestock grazing) with emphasis on the Northern Great Plains ecoregion of North America, (ii) quantifies management system effects on nutrient and total suspended solids concentrations and loads, and (iii) identifies information gaps regarding water quality associated with integrated crop-livestock systems and research needs in this area. In general, management practices used in integrated crop-livestock systems reduced losses of total suspended solids, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in surface runoff and soil leachate. However, certain management practices (e.g., no-till or reduced tillage) reduced losses of total N (relative median change = -65%), whereas soluble P losses in runoff increased (57%). Conversely, practices such as grazing increased median total suspended solids (22%), nitrate (45%), total N (85%), and total P (25%) concentrations and loads in surface runoff and aquatic ecosystems. An improved understanding of the interactive effects of integrated crop-livestock management practices on surface water quality and soil leachate under current and future climate scenarios is urgently needed. To close this knowledge gap, future studies should focus on determining concentrations and loads of total suspended solids, N, P, and organic carbon in runoff and soil leachate from integrated crop-livestock systems.
