Supercritical fluid technology as a sustainable alternative method for textile dyeing: An approach on waste, energy, and CO2 emission reduction

The clothing industry is considered one of the most polluting industries on the planet due to the high consumption of water, energy, chemicals/dyes, and high generation of solid waste and effluents. Faced with environmental concerns, the textile ennoblement sector is the most critical of the textile production chain, especially the traditional dyeing processes. As an alternative to current problems, dyeing with supercritical CO2 (scCO2) has been presented as a clean and efficient process for a sustainable textile future. Supercritical fluid dyeing (SFD) has shown a growing interest due to its significant impact on environmental preservation and social, economic, and financial gains. The main SFD benefits include economy and reuse of non-adsorbed dyes; reduction of process time and energy expenditure; capture of atmospheric CO2 (greenhouse gas); use and recycling of CO2 in SFD; generation of carbon credits; water-free process; effluent-free process; reduction of CO2 emission and auxiliary chemicals. Despite being still a non-scalable and evolving technology, SFD is the future of dyeing. This review presented a comprehensive overview of the environmental impacts caused by traditional processes and confronted the advantages of SFD. The SFD technique was introduced, along with its latest advances and future perspectives. Financial and environmental gains were also discussed.

A systematic review of industrial wastewater management: Evaluating challenges and enablers

The study provides a systematic literature review (SLR) encompassing industrial wastewater management research from the past decade, examining enablers, challenges, and prevailing practices. Originating from manufacturing, energy production, and diverse industrial processes, industrial wastewater's handling is critical due to its potential to impact the environment and public health. The research aims to comprehend the current state of industrial wastewater management, pinpoint gaps, and outline future research prospects. The SLR methodology involves scouring the Scopus database, yielding an initial pool of 253 articles. Refinement via search code leaves 101 articles, followed by abstract screening that reduces articles to 79, and finally 66 well-focused articles left for thorough full-text examination. Results underscore the significance of regulatory frameworks, technological innovation, and sustainability considerations as cornerstones for effective wastewater management. However, substantial impediments like; inadequate infrastructure, resource constraints and the necessity for stakeholder collaboration still exist. The study highlights emerging research domains, exemplified by advanced technologies like nanotechnology and bioremediation, alongside the pivotal role of circular economy principles in wastewater management. The SLR offers an exhaustive view of contemporary industrial wastewater management, accentuating the imperative of an all-encompassing approach that integrates regulatory, technological, and sustainability facets. Notably, the research identifies gaps and opportunities for forthcoming exploration, advocating for interdisciplinary research and intensified stakeholder collaboration. The study's insights cater to policymakers, practitioners, and researchers, equipping them to address the challenges and capitalize on prospects in industrial wastewater management effectively.

Cross-regional collaborative governance in the process of pollution industry transfer: The case of enclave parks in China

To promote the effectiveness of cross-regional collaborative governance of pollution firm transfer, a stochastic evolutionary game model among three sectors (flying out parks, pollution firms, and flying in parks) was proposed. According to the three policy goals, three paths of collaborative governance were investigated using numerical simulations. Our findings focus on the following three aspects: (i) If policymakers want to urge more parks and pollution firms in the three sectors to choose a cooperation strategy, additional relocation subsidies from superior governments for pollution firms have the most remarkable effect. However, excessive subsidies will push flying out parks to inhibit the transfer of pollution firms. (ii) If policymakers intendto urge parks and pollution firms to cooperate quickly, increasing the environmental costs of firms will play key role. Notably, even if the environmental costs are low, they can still considerably and positively affect choosing a transfer strategy of for pollution firms. (iii) If policymakers expect defection parks and pollution firms to be as few as possible during the regulation process, the cost-sharing mechanism with only two sectors (flying in parks and flying out parks) is invalid. Introducing higher-level departments or other sectors for cost-sharing to escape the current dilemma is necessary.

Cross-linked FeCl3-activated seaweed carbon/MCM-41/alginate hydrogel composite for effective biosorption of bisphenol A plasticizer and basic dye from aqueous solution

A FeCl₃-activated seaweed carbon/MCM-41/alginate hydrogel composite (ECAC/MCM-41/ ALG) cross-linked with calcium chloride (2% CaCl₂) was synthesized for the biosorption of bisphenol A (BPA) plasticizer and basic blue (BB) dye. Biosorption uptakes of BPA and BB were performed in a batch mode with varying solution pH from 3 to 11, initial sorbate concentration from 25 to 300 mg/L, reaction time from 0 to 10 h, and biosorption temperature from 30 to 50 °C. The maximum BPA and BB uptake mechanisms were fast, which occurred within contact times of 1 and 2 h with monolayer coverage capacities of 222.32 and 190.11 mg/g at 50 °C, respectively. Cyclic biosorption/desorption behavior was evaluated via an ethanol elution to evaluate the feasibility of the ECAC/MCM-41/ALG for long-term application. Results revealed the biosorption renewability for five cycles up to 80% of the newly synthesized hydrogel composite for the purification of industrial wastewater laden with emerging contaminants.
