Supplying amendments alleviates aluminum toxicity and regulates cadmium accumulation by spinach in strongly acidic soils

The role of phosphorus speciation of biochar in reducing available Cd and phytoavailability in mining area soil: Effect and mechanism

The effect of phosphorus (P) speciation in biochar on soil available Cd and its mechanism to alleviate plant Cd stress remain largely unknown. Here, ammonium polyphosphate (PABC)-, phosphoric acid (PHBC)-, potassium dihydrogen phosphate (PKBC)-, and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (PNBC)-modified biochar were used to investigate P speciation. The Cd immobilization mechanism of biochar was analyzed by XPS and ³¹P NMR, and the soil quality and the mechanism for the biochar to alleviate Cd stress were also determined. The results demonstrated that PBC (pristine biochar), PABC, PHBC, PKBC, and PNBC reduced the content of soil DTPA-Cd by 14.96 % - 32.19 %, 40.44 % - 47.26 %, 17.52 % - 41.78 %, and 21.90 % - 36.64 %, respectively. The XPS and ³¹P NMR results demonstrated that the orthophosphate on the surface of PABC, PHBC, PKBC, and PNBC accounted for 82.06 %, 62.77 %, 33.1 %, and 54.46 %, respectively, indicating that PABC has the highest passivation efficiency on soil Cd, which was ascribed to the highest orthophosphate content on the biochar surface. Pot experiments revealed that PABC could reduce the Cd content by 4.18, 4.41, 4.43, 2.94, and 2.57 folds in roots, stems, leaves, pods, and grains, respectively, and at the same time increase the dry and fresh weight of soybean and decrease Cd toxicity to soybean by improving the antioxidant system. In addition, application of the P-modified biochars improved the enzyme activity and physicochemical properties of the soil. This study provides a new perspective for studying the effect of P-modified biochars on soil Cd immobilization.

Mechanism of Al toxicity alleviation in acidic red soil by rice-straw hydrochar application and comparison with pyrochar

In the past decade, biochar has been widely regarded as a new type of soil conditioner that can effectively control soil acidification and alleviate Al toxicity. Hydrochar is identified as a more economical carbon material than pyrochar, but its effect on Al toxicity and the associated mechanism have not been studied. Thus, a two-stage indoor incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of rice-straw hydrochar (HC, application rate: 1/2/3 %) on maize seedling root growth, soil solution Al activity, soil exchangeable Al and pH buffering ability in acidic red soils from two sites. We also used pyrochar (PC, application rate: 3 %) produced from the same rice straw for comparison. Except for HC-1 %, both hydrochar and pyrochar addition significantly stimulated relative root elongation (136.36 % ~ 284.09 %), diminished the cell death ratio (27.96 % ~ 85.56 %) and Al content in root tips (18.80 % ~ 80.11 %) by decreasing the total Al content (44.78 % ~ 76.10 %) and the proportion of Al³⁺ species (27 % ~ 32 %) in soil solution. Hydrochar did not significantly promote the soil pH buffer capacity (pH-BC) or effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC), while PC-3 % did. The DOC (dissolved organic carbon) content of soil solution was dramatically elevated by 203.9 % ~ 783.2 % after hydrochar addition. Hydrochar mitigates Al activity in soil solution mainly through Al-DOC complexation and adsorption, thus suppressing the Al toxicity of maize roots. Hydrochar may be an economical soil amendment for ameliorating Al toxicity despite its overall alleviation effect on Al toxicity being lower than pyrochar.

Recent progresses, challenges, and opportunities of carbon-based materials applied in heavy metal polluted soil remediation

The application of carbon-based materials (CBMs) for heavy metal polluted soil remediation has gained growing interest due to their versatile properties and excellent remediation performance. Although the progresses on applications of CBMs in removing heavy metal from aqueous solution and their corresponding mechanisms were well known, comprehensive review on applications of CBMs in heavy metal polluted soil remediation were less identified. Therefore, this review provided insights into advanced progresses on utilization of typical CBMs including biochar, activated carbon, graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, and carbon black for heavy metal polluted soil remediation. The mechanisms of CBM remediation of heavy metals in soil were summarized, mainly including physical adsorption, precipitation, complexation, electrostatic interaction, and cationic-π coordination. The key factors affecting the remediation effect include soil pH, organic matter, minerals, microorganisms, coexisting ions, moisture, and material size. Disadvantages of CBMs were also included, such as: potential health risks, high cost, and difficulty in achieving co-passivation of anions and cations. This work will contribute to our understanding of current research advances, challenges, and opportunities for CBMs remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils.
