Abstract
Biofilms reduce antibiotic efficacy and lead to complications and mortality in human and equine patients with orthopedic infections. Equine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) kill planktonic bacteria and prevent biofilm formation, but their ability to disrupt established orthopedic biofilms is unknown. Our objective was to evaluate the ability of MSC to reduce established S. aureus or E. coli biofilms in vitro. We hypothesized that MSC would reduce biofilm matrix and colony-forming units (CFU) compared to no treatment and that MSC combined with the antibiotic, amikacin sulfate, would reduce these components more than MSC or amikacin alone. MSC were isolated from 5 adult Thoroughbred horses in antibiotic-free medium. 24-hour S. aureus or E. coli biofilms were co-cultured in triplicate for 24 or 48 hours in a transwell plate system: untreated (negative) control, 30 μg/mL amikacin, 1 x 106 passage 3 MSC, and MSC with 30 μg/mL amikacin. Treated biofilms were photographed and biofilm area quantified digitally. Biomass was quantified via crystal violet staining, and CFU quantified following enzymatic digestion. Data were analyzed using mixed model ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc comparisons (p < 0.05). MSC significantly reduced S. aureus biofilms at both timepoints and E. coli biofilm area at 48 hours compared to untreated controls. MSC with amikacin significantly reduced S. aureus biofilms versus amikacin and E. coli biofilms versus MSC at 48 hours. MSC significantly reduced S. aureus biomass at both timepoints and reduced S. aureus CFU at 48 hours versus untreated controls. MSC with amikacin significantly reduced S. aureus biomass versus amikacin at 24 hours and S. aureus and E. coli CFU versus MSC at both timepoints. MSC primarily disrupted the biofilm matrix but performed differently on S. aureus versus E. coli. Evaluation of biofilm-MSC interactions, MSC dose, and treatment time are warranted prior to testing in vivo.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and serum total protein (STP) concentrations and serum Brix percentages of neonatal Arabian foals during first 3 weeks of life. Blood samples were collected from 12 apparently healthy foals by jugular venipuncture at birth and at 12-hours, 24-hours, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15 and 21 days of age. Serum IgG and STP concentrations and Brix percentages were measured by the radial immunodiffusion assay, and digital STP and Brix refractometers, respectively. Based on the serum IgG concentrations measured at 24 h, two foals were diagnosed with failure of transfer of passive immunity (FTPI). While IgG concentrations were determined using the data of foals with adequate transfer of passive immunity, other calculations were made using the data of all foals. The mean IgG concentration of the foals increased from birth (<200 mg/dl) to 12 (2068.5 mg/dl) and 24 h (2184.7 mg/dl), and progressively decreased up to 21 days of age (1318.5 mg/dl). The serum IgG concentrations at 12 h were highly correlated with each of the IgG concentrations measured over the 21-day period. The serum IgG and STP concentrations and Brix percentages of the foals diagnosed with FTPI at 12 h did not reach the adequate strata over time. These results suggest that foals can be reliably tested for passive immunity status at 12 h after birth.

Abstract
A 2-year-old Quarter Horse filly was admitted to our facility with a two-day history of trauma caused by barbed wire on the front face of the right front limb fetlock joint. A septic arthritis was confirmed with the synovial fluid examination. The cytologic evaluation of synovial fluid showed 101,000 leukocytes/mm3, 90% neutrophils, and a total protein concentration of 4 g/dL. It was, therefore, decided to perform an arthroscopic lavage using an ultrasonic device with the tip inserted inside the synovial cavity to exploit the phenomenon of acoustic cavitation. After the removal of the synovial pannus, the probe was left to vibrate in the area near the visible penetrating wound inside the joint until three liters of saline was finished. Further studies are needed for understanding and applying this technology in different equine fields and with different bacterial species. However, these first results are promising for the efficacy of this innovative procedure.
