Layered double hydroxides as adsorbents and carriers of the herbicide (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)acetic acid (MCPA): systems Mg-Al, Mg-Fe and Mg-Al-Fe

Performance and mechanism of La-Fe metal-organic framework as a highly efficient adsorbent for fluoride removal from mine water

Water fluoride pollution has caused non-negligible harm to the environment and humans, and thus it is crucial to find a suitable treatment technology. In this study, La-Fe@PTA adsorbent was synthesized for the defluoridation of mine water. The results showed that the optimum conditions for defluoridation by La-Fe@PTA were pH close to 7.0, the initial F- concentration of 10 mg/L, the dosage of 0.5 g/L and the adsorption time of 240 min. Compared with SO42‒, Cl‒, NO3‒, Ca2+ and Mg2+, CO32‒ and HCO3‒ presented severer inhibition on fluoride uptake by La-Fe@PTA. The adsorption process fits well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of Langmuir model was 95 mg/g. Fixed-bed adsorption results indicated that fluoride in practical fluorinated mine water could be effectively removed from 3.6 mg/L to less than 1.5 mg/L within 130 bed volume (BV) by using 1.5 g La-Fe@PTA. Furthermore, the adsorbent still had good adsorption capacity after regeneration, which confirms the great application potential of La-Fe@PTA as a fluoride ion adsorbent. The mechanism analysis showed that La-Fe@PTA adsorption of fluorine ions is a physicochemical reaction driven by electrostatic attraction and ion exchange.

Herbicidal weed management practices: History and future prospects of nanotechnology in an eco-friendly crop production system

Weed management is an important aspect of crop production, as weeds cause significant losses in terms of yield and quality. Various approaches to weed management are commonly practiced by crop growers. Due to limitations in other control methods, farmers often choose herbicides as a cost-effective, rapid and highly efficient weed control strategy. Although herbicides are highly effective on most weeds, they are not a complete solution for weed management because of the genetic diversity and evolving flexibility of weed communities. The excessive and indiscriminate use of herbicides and their dominance in weed control have triggered the rapid generation of herbicide-resistant weed species. Moreover, environmental losses of active ingredients in the herbicides cause serious damage to the environment and pose a serious threat to living organisms. Scientific advances have enabled nanotechnology to emerge as an innovation with real potential in modern agriculture, adding a new dimension in the preparation of controlled release formulations (CRF) of herbicides. Here the required amount of active ingredients is released over longer periods of time to obtain the desired biological efficacy whilst reducing the harmful effects of these chemicals. Various organic and inorganic carrier materials have been utilised in CRF and researchers have a wide range of options for the synthesis of eco-friendly carrier materials, especially those with less or no toxicity to living organisms. This manuscript addresses the history, progress, and consequences of herbicide application, and discusses potential ways to reduce eco-toxicity due to herbicide application, along with directions for future research areas using the benefits of nanotechnology.

Multifaceted potential applicability of hydrotalcite-type anionic clays from green chemistry to environmental sustainability

Hydrotalcite-like anionic clays (HTs) also known as Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been developed as multifunctional materials in numerous applications related to catalysis, adsorption, and ion-exchange processes. These materials constitute an important class of ionic lamellar solid clays of Brucite-like structure which comprise of consecutive layers of divalent and trivalent metal cations with charge balancing anions and water molecules in interlayer space. These materials have received increasing attention in research due to their interesting properties namely layered structure, ease of preparation, flexible tunability, ability to intercalate different types of anions, electronic properties, high thermal stability, high biocompatibility, and easy biodegradation. Moreover, HTs/LDHs have unique tailorable and tuneable characteristics such as both acidic and basic sites, anion exchange capability, surface area, basal spacing, memory effect, and also exhibit high exchange capacities, which makes them versatile materials for a wide range of applications and extended their horizons to diverse areas of science and technology. This study enlightens the various rational researches related to the synthetic methods and features focusing on synthesis and/or fabrication with other hybrids and their applications. The diverse applications (namely catalyst, adsorbent to toxic chemicals, agrochemicals management, non-toxic flame retardants, and recycling of plastics) of these multifunctional materials related to a clean and sustainable environment were also summarized.

Adsorption of nitrate from interflow by the Mg/Fe calcined layered double hydroxides

Nitrate loss in interflow caused serious nitrate pollution of neighboring water bodies in the purple soil region of China's Sichuan Province. In this study, Mg/Fe(Al)-calcined layered double hydroxides (Mg/Fe(Al)-CLDHs) with varied Mg/Fe(Al) ratios were synthesized for nitrate removal from interflow, and 3:1 Mg/Fe CLDH exhibited the best adsorption performance. The effects of initial pH, adsorbent dosage and co-existing anions on the adsorption performance were investigated by batch experiments. The best-fitting kinetic and isothermal models for nitrate adsorption were the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model, respectively, indicating that the adsorption process was a physical-chemical multilayer process. The maximum adsorption capacity of nitrate was 73.36 mg/g, which was higher than that of many other commonly used adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques, and the XRD and FT-IR results revealed that the adsorption mechanism involved original layered structure reconstruction and ion-exchange interaction. Under the coexistence of SO₄^2- and Cl^-, 75.63% nitrate in interflow could be removed after 6 h of adsorption. Overall, the synthesized Mg/Fe CLDH is an effective and low-cost nitrate adsorbent for in-situ nitrate removal.

A Review on Nanopesticides for Plant Protection Synthesized Using the Supramolecular Chemistry of Layered Hydroxide Hosts

The rapid growth in the human population has triggered increased demand for food supply, and in turn has prompted a higher amount of agrochemical usage to meet the gaps between food production and consumption. The problem with conventional agro-nanochemicals is the reduced effectiveness of the active ingredient in reaching the target, along with leaching, evaporation, etc., which ultimately affect the environment and life, including humans. Fortunately, nanotechnology platforms offer a new life for conventional pesticides, which improves bioavailability through different kinetics, mechanisms and pathways on their target organisms, thus enabling them to suitably bypass biological and other unwanted resistances and therefore increase their efficacy. This review is intended to serve the scientific community for research, development and innovation (RDI) purposes, by providing an overview on the current status of the host-guest supramolecular chemistry of nanopesticides, focusing on only the two-dimensional (2D), brucite-like inorganic layered hydroxides, layered hydroxide salts and layered double hydroxides as the functional nanocarriers or as the hosts in smart nanodelivery systems of pesticides for plant protection. Zinc layered hydroxides and zinc/aluminum-layered double hydroxides were found to be the most popular choices of hosts, presumably due to their relative ease to prepare and cheap cost. Other hosts including Mg/Al-, Co/Cr-, Mg/Fe-, Mg/Al/Fe-, Zn/Cr- and Zn/Cu-LDHs were also used. This review also covers various pesticides which were used as the guest active agents using supramolecular host-guest chemistry to combat various pests for plant protection. This looks towards a new generation of agrochemicals, "agro-nanochemicals", which are more effective, and friendly to life, humans and the environment.

Recent progress in the synthesis of Layered Double Hydroxides and their application for the adsorptive removal of dyes: A review

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as anionic clays, are lamellar inorganic solids with a brucite-like structure and consist of positively charged metal hydroxide sheets intercalated by anions and water molecules. Choice of LDH is beneficial as it displays properties like simple synthesis procedures, adjustable structure, stability, large surface area, homogeneous positive charge distribution over the surface, interplanar spacing, and versatility to synthesize a variety of composites. Due to these properties LDHs act as efficient adsorbents for wastewater treatment. This review presents a detailed overview of the removal of hazardous organic dyes using different LDHs and LDH-hybrids/composites. The review also incorporates methods of synthesis of various LDHs and composites and the effect of their morphology on dye removal capacity. The effects of adsorption variables such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of dye, contact time on the adsorption of these materials are also explained along with adsorption isotherms, kinetics and operative mechanisms. This article incorporates 156 references, majority of which have been taken from the available literature of last 5 years.

Preparation of alginate-chitosan floating granules loaded with 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid (MCPA) and their bioactivity on water hyacinth

BACKGROUND

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is considered the most damaging aquatic weed in many countries. Chemical methods are still the primary approach to control, although this directly exposes the natural enemy of water hyacinth (water hyacinth weevil) to herbicides. In addition, spray drift can easily damage non-target plants. In this study, herbicides, natural polymer materials (chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan), sodium alginate and natural oils (citronella oil) were used to prepare novel floating polysaccharide granules as a solution for controlling water hyacinth.

RESULTS

2-Methyl-4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid (MCPA) floating granules with a spherical structure were prepared using a MCPA-chitosan-sodium alginate-oil cross-linking and embedding method. The granules produced showed the required properties of floatation and slow controlled herbicide release. In addition, the polysaccharide granules collected around water hyacinth plants and enabled targeted release of the active herbicide ingredients onto the stems and roots of the weed, thereby stopping the herbicide from reaching non-target plants and preventing regrowth of water hyacinth.

CONCLUSION

We successfully prepared highly effective MCPA-loaded floating granules, which compared with an MCPA solution, exerted greater control on water hyacinth. Concomitantly, these granules provide a solution to spray drift and ensure the safety of natural enemies of water hyacinth, which is of great significance in research on herbicide formulations.

Effect of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy acetic acid on tomato gene expression and rhizosphere bacterial communities under inoculation with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria

The herbicide 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy acetic acid (MCPA) is widely used to control the spread of broad-leaved weeds in agricultural soils, though it remains unclear how tomato plants cope with the phytotoxic effects of MCPA at the molecular level. In this study, RNA-seq and Illumina MiSeq were used to sequence bacterial communities in tomato rhizosphere soils treated with MCPA and the phosphate-solubilizing bacterial strain N3. The results showed that MCPA induced abnormal growth of lateral roots in tomato seedlings and reduced uptake of the nutrients N, P, and K as well as the hormone (ABA and GA3) levels. Inoculation with strain N3 increased nutrient uptake by roots and increased levels of the hormones ABA, ZEA, and JA in tomato seedlings and also increased the abundance of the phyla Proteobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes in soil under MCPA treatment. GO functional groups in which differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are involved included DNA binding transcription factor activity, transcriptional regulator activity, enzyme inhibitor activity, and cell wall biogenesis. The highest numbers of DEGs are annotated to ribosome, photosynthesis, and carbon metabolism categories. Our findings provide valuable information for the application of strain N3, which is beneficial for reducing the toxic effect of MCPA on vegetable plants.

3D, eco-friendly metal-organic frameworks@carbon nanotube aerogels composite materials for removal of pesticides in water

To alleviate the secondary risks of using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanoparticles as adsorbent, a novel method of loading two MOFs (ZIF-8 or UiO66-NH₂) on the carbon nanotube aerogels (MPCA) by in situ nucleation and growth of MOFs nanoparticles onto carbon nanotubes were developed. The prepared MOFs@MPCA aerogels were well characterized via SEM, TEM, EDS, FT-IR, XRD and XPS to reveal the microstructure and formation mechanism of MOF@MPCA. Besides, the hydrophilia, mechanical property and thermostability of MOF@MPCA were investigated. The results showed that MOF@MPCA had good hydrophilia, compression resilience and thermostability. The study on the ability to adsorb herbicides (chipton and alachlor) showed that the adsorption capacity of MOF@MPCA was stronger compared with single MOFs nanoparticles, which indicated that there was a synergistic effect between MOFs and MPCA. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of chipton adsorbed by UiO66-NH₂@MPCA was 227.3 mg/g, and can be expediently reused for 5 cycles without a significant decrease in adsorption performance. Moreover, the results of biosafety experiments showed that MPCA can reduce the risk of MOFs nanoparticles leakage into the environment and accumulation in organisms. This work can provide a new research idea, which has potential applications to remove pollutants effectively and safely from the environment.

LDH-Co-Fe-Acetate: A New Efficient Sorbent for Azoic Dye Removal and Elaboration by Hydrolysis in Polyol, Characterization, Adsorption, and Anionic Exchange of Direct Red 2 as a Model Anionic Dye

A new, double hydroxide based on Co and Fe was elaborated on by forced hydrolysis in a polyol medium. Complementary characterization techniques show that this new phase belongs to the layered double hydroxide family (LDH) with Co2+ and Fe3+ ions located in the octahedral sites of the bucite-like structure. The acetate anions occupy interlayer space with an interlamellar distance of 12.70 Å. This large distance likely facilitates the exchange reaction. Acetates were exchanged by carbonates. The as-obtained compound Co-Fe-Ac/Ex shows an interlamellar distance of 7.67 Å. The adsorption of direct red 2 by Co-Fe-Ac-LDH has been examined in order to measure the capability of this new LDH to eliminate highly toxic azoic anionic dyes from waste water and was compared with that of Co-Fe-Ac/Ex and Co-Fe-CO3/A (synthesized in an aqueous medium). The adsorption capacity was found to depend on contact time, pH, initial dye concentration, and heating temperature. Concerning CoFeAc-LDH, the dye uptake reaches a high level (588 mg/g) due to the occurrence of both adsorption processes: physisorption on the external surface and chemical sorption due to the intercalation of dye by exchange with an acetate anion. The study enables us to quantify the uptake amount of each effect in which the intercalation has the most important amount (418 mg/g).

Nanohybrid Layered Double Hydroxides Used to Remove Several Dyes from Water

For the preparation and characterization of several layer double hydroxides (LDH) with inorganic interlayer anions (carbonate and nitrate) and nanohybrids, two organo-LDHs were studied in detail. The dodecylbenzene sulfonate (DBS) was used as an organic interlayer anion to modify the hydrophilic nature of the interlayer. The aim of the modification of the layered double hydroxides (LDH) was to change the hydrophilic character of the interlayer to hydrophobic with the purpose of improving its ability to adsorb several (anionic and cationic) dyes from water. These compounds have been used as adsorbents of amaranth (Am), diamine green B (DGB) and brilliant green (BG) dyes. Adsorption tests were conducted using variable pH values, contact times and initial dye concentrations (adsorption isotherms) to identify the optimum conditions for the intended purpose. Adsorbents and adsorption products were characterized by several physicochemical techniques. The results of the adsorption tests showed that the organo-LDH nanohybrids could be efficient adsorbents in the removal of studied dyes from water. Thus, it can be concluded that nanohybrids studied in this work might act as suitable supports in the design of adsorbents for the removal of a wide spectrum of dyes with the aim of reducing the adverse effects on water resources.

Layered double hydroxide/sepiolite hybrid nanoarchitectures for the controlled release of herbicides

In this work, organic-inorganic hybrid nanoarchitectures were prepared in a single coprecipitation step by assembling magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxides (MgAl-LDH) and a sepiolite fibrous clay, with the simultaneous encapsulation of the herbicide 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) as the MgAl-LDH retains its ion exchange properties. The synthetic procedure was advantageous in comparison to the incorporation of MCPA by ion exchange after the formation of the LDH/sepiolite nanoarchitecture in a previous step, as it was less time consuming and gave rise to a higher loading of MCPA. The resulting MCPA-LDH/sepiolite nanoarchitectures were characterized by various physicochemical techniques (XRD, FTIR and ²⁹Si NMR spectroscopies, CHN analysis and SEM) that revealed interactions of LDH with the sepiolite fibers through the silanol groups present on the outer surface of sepiolite, together with the intercalation of MCPA in the LDH confirmed by the increase in the basal spacing from 0.77 nm for the pristine LDH to 2.32 nm for the prepared materials. The amount of herbicide incorporated in the hybrid nanoarchitectures prepared by the single-step coprecipitation method surpassed the CEC of LDH (ca. 330 mEq/100 g), with values reaching 445 mEq/100 g LDH for certain compositions. This suggests a synergy between the inorganic solids that allows the nanoarchitecture to exhibit better adsorption properties than the separate components. Additionally, in the release assays, the herbicide incorporated in the hybrid nanoarchitectures could be completely released, which confirms its suitability for agricultural applications. In order to achieve a more controlled release of the herbicide and to act for several days on the surface of the soil, the hybrid nanoarchitectures were encapsulated in a biopolymer matrix of alginate/zein and shaped into spheres. In in vitro tests carried out in bidistilled water, a continuous release of MCPA from the bionanocomposite beads was achieved for more than a week, while the non-encapsulated materials released the 100% of MCPA in 48 h. Besides, the encapsulation may allow for better handling and transport of the herbicide.

Zn–Fe-layered double hydroxide intercalated with vanadate and molybdate anions for electrocatalytic water oxidation

The electrocatalytic water oxidation behavior of Zn–Fe–NO₃–LDH, Zn–Fe–VO₄-LDH and Zn–Fe–MoO₄–LDH has been investigated.

Agro-industrial waste: a low cost adsorbent for effective removal of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid herbicide in batch and packed bed modes

The present work describes the aqueous phase removal of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid herbicide by rice husk ash (RHA) using batch and packed bed adsorption techniques. The effects of dosage, initial concentration, time, pH, temperature, and particle size of adsorbent in batch compared with effects of influent concentration, flow rate, and bed height in packed bed were studied. The particle size effect reveals that the removal is dependent on chemical composition (silica and carbon content) together with BET surface area of RHA. The aptness of Langmuir isotherm to batch data indicates the favorable adsorption whereas that of Temkin isotherm informs the heterogeneous nature of RHA. The kinetics of adsorption follows the pseudo-second order and Elovich models while thermodynamics of process indicates the exothermic adsorption. Among the models applied in packed bed study, the deactivation kinetic, Yoon-Nelson and bed depth service time (BDST) models are suitable to explain the packed bed adsorption. The adsorption capacity of RHA in packed bed study is found greater than that in batch. The adsorption capacity of RHA determined by the BDST model is 3019 mg/L for 90 % saturation of bed. The adsorption capacity of RHA based on weight is ∼2.3 times and that based on surface area is ∼55.55 times greater than that of granular activated carbon.

Adsorption and characterization of MCPA on DDTMA- and raw-montmorillonite: Surface sites involved

The 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy acid (MCPA) is an herbicide widely used in agriculture, which generates a great concern about contamination of surface water and serious consequences for human health and the environment. In this work, the adsorption of MCPA on an Argentine montmorillonite (MMT) and its organo-montmorillonite product (OMMT) with different dodecyl trimethyl ammonium loading was investigated. MCPA adsorption on OMMT increases at least 3 times, with respect to the amount determined for MMT. X-ray diffraction and zeta potential analyses indicated the inner (interlayer) and outer surface participate as adsorption sites. Changes in surface electric charge and also interlayer expansion suggest that dimethyl amine (MCPA counterion) was also surface-adsorbed. The larger aggregates of OMMT, without and with MCPA, obtained compared to those of MMT samples, generate an improvement in the coagulation efficiency. This property, particularly after MCPA retention, allows an easier separation of the solids from the solution and enables a simple technological process application.

Fast adsorption and removal of 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid from aqueous solution with amine functionalized zirconium metal–organic framework

An amino functionalized zirconium-based MOF named UiO-66-NH₂ was synthesized and explored as a novel adsorbent for the fast removal of 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid (MCPA) in aqueous solution.

Sorption of Cr(vi) on Mg–Al–Fe layered double hydroxides synthesized by a mechanochemical method

Mg–Al–Fe layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were synthesized by a mechanochemical method. Sorption of Cr(vi) on the LDHs in aqueous solution was investigated. With increasing Fe content in the LDHs, sorption capacity for Cr(vi) increased. The mechanochemical method can be used to synthesize LDH sorbents.

The OH-induced degradation mechanism of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) with two forms in the water: a DFT comparison

The initial degradation mechanisms of ⁱOH and 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) including molecular form and anionic form are studied at the MPWB1K/6-311+G(3df, 2p)//MPWB1K/6-31+G(d, p) level. Possible reaction pathways of H-atom abstraction and ⁱOH addition are considered in detail. By result comparison analysis, it is found that the reaction mechanisms for ⁱOH and two forms of MCPA are different, and most reactions for anionic MCPA are easier than those for molecular MCPA. For H-atom abstraction reactions, the calculated energies show that ⁱOH abstracting H-atom from -CH(3) group of molecular MCPA is the most kinetically favorable process; the potential energy surface for anionic MCPA indicates that H-atom in -CH(2) group is slightly easier to be abstracted than that in -CH(3) group. For ⁱOH addition reactions, the addition of ⁱOH to the C1 site is the initial step for molecular MCPA and the predominant product is 4-chloro-2-methylphenol (denoted P3), while the C4 site is the most reactive site for anionic MCPA and the primary product results from the hydroxylation of the aromatic ring, which is in good agreement with the experimental observation. In additional, results from PCM calculations show that most reactions in water phase are more kinetically favorable than those in gas phase, though the mechanisms discussed above will not be changed.

Adsorption of perchlorate from aqueous solution by the calcination product of Mg/(Al-Fe) hydrotalcite-like compounds

The calcination products containing Mg(II), Al(III), and Fe(III) in the brucite-like layers with varying Mg/Al/Fe molar ratios at 550°C were used as the adsorbent to remove perchlorate from aqueous solution, while the Mg/(Al-Fe) hydrotalcite compounds were synthesized by co-precipitation method at a constant pH value. The Mg/(Al-Fe) hydrotalcite compounds (HMAF) were characterized by XRD, FT-IR and TG-DTA. The characteristics showed that the layered double hydroxides structures in the HMAF were lost during calcination at 550°C, but were reconstructed subsequent to adsorption of perchlorate, indicating that the 'memory effect' appeared to play an important role in perchlorate adsorption. Batch adsorption studies were conducted under various equilibration conditions, such as molar ratios of Mg/Al/Fe, calcined temperature, different initial solution pH, adsorbent dose, initial perchlorate concentration, and co-existing anions. It was found that the existence of ferric iron in calcined Mg/(Al-Fe) hydrotalcite compound (CHMAF) was favorable to removal of perchlorate from water, and the best ratio of Mg/Al/Fe is 3:0.8:0.2 (CHMAF5%). This study demonstrated that the calcination product of Mg/(Al-Fe) hydrotalcite-like compound was a promising adsorbent for control of the perchlorate pollution in water.

Montmorillonite-chitosan bionanocomposites as adsorbents of the herbicide clopyralid in aqueous solution and soil/water suspensions

Montmorillonite (SWy-2)-chitosan bionanocomposites (SW-CH) were prepared following different methodologies, characterized, and assayed as adsorbents of the herbicide clopyralid (3,6-dichloropyridine-2-carboxylic acid) in aqueous solution and soil/water suspensions, to assess the potential of the materials to prevent and remediate soil and water contamination by anionic pesticides. The SW-CH bionanocomposites were good adsorbents for the herbicide at pH levels where both the anionic form of the herbicide (pK(a)=2.3) and the cationic form of CH (pK(a)=6.3) predominated. The performance of the SW-CH bionanocomposites as adsorbents of clopyralid depended on the amount and arrangement of chitosan in the samples. Clopyralid adsorption was rapid and mostly linear up to herbicide concentrations as high as 0.5mM. High salt concentrations (0.1M NaCl) promoted desorption of the adsorbed pesticide from SW-CH, strongly suggesting that adsorption of clopyralid occurred primarily through an ion exchange mechanism on positively charged CH sites at the montmorillonite surface. Amendment of an acidic soil (pH=4.5) with SW-CH at rates of 5% and 10% led to a significant increase in clopyralid adsorption, whereas this effect was negligible when SW-CH was added to an alkaline soil (pH=8.0), reflecting the absence of positively charged sites in SW-CH at high pH values. Montmorillonite-CH bionanocomposites can be useful as adsorbents for the removal and/or immobilization of anionic pesticides in soil and water under mild acidic conditions.

Use of a new hybrid sol-gel zirconia matrix in the removal of the herbicide MCPA: a sorption/degradation process

A class II hybrid sol-gel material was prepared starting from zirconium(IV) propoxide and 2,4-pentanedione and its catalytic activity in the removal of the herbicide 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) was revealed. The thermal and structural characterization, performed by thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, and diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, demonstrated the hybrid nature of the material. The structure of the material can be described as a polymeric network of zirconium oxo clusters, on the surface of which large part of Zr(4+) ions are involved in strong complexation equilibria with acetylacetonate (acac) ligands. The incubation of MCPA in the presence of this material yielded an herbicide removal fraction up to 98%. A two-step mechanism was proposed for the MCPA removal, in which a reversible first-order adsorption of the herbicide is followed by its catalytic degradation. The nature of the products of the MCPA catalytic degradation as well as the reaction conditions adopted do not support typical oxidation pathways involving radicals, suggesting the existence of a different mechanism in which the Zr(4+):acac enol-type complex can act as Lewis acid catalyst.

Organo/layered double hydroxide nanohybrids used to remove non ionic pesticides

The preparation and characterization of organo/layered double hydroxide nanohybrids with dodecylsulfate and sebacate as interlayer anion were studied in detail. The aim of the modification of the layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was to change the hydrophilic character of the interlayer to hydrophobic to improve the ability of the nanohybrids to adsorb non-ionic pesticides such as alachlor and metolachlor from water. Adsorption tests were conducted on organo/LDHs using variable pH values, contact times and initial pesticide concentrations (adsorption isotherms) in order to identify the optimum conditions for the intended purpose. Adsorbents and adsorption products were characterized several physicochemical techniques. The adsorption test showed that a noticeable increase of the adsorption of the non-ionic herbicides was produced. Based on the results, the organo/LDHs could be good adsorbents to remove alachlor and metolachlor from water. Different organo/LDHs complexes were prepared by a mechanical mixture and by adsorption. The results show that HTSEB-based complex displays controlled release properties that reduce metolachlor leaching in soil columns compared to a technical product and the other formulations. The release was dependent on the nature of the adsorbent used to prepare the complexes. Thus, it can be concluded that organo/LDHs might act as suitable supports for the design of pesticide slow release formulations with the aim of reducing the adverse effects derived from rapid transport losses of the chemical once applied to soils.

Intercalation of the herbicide atrazine in layered double hydroxides for controlled-release applications

BACKGROUND

The herbicide atrazine was intercalated in the interlayer region of Mg/Al layered double hydroxides in order to produce a nanohybrid that could be used in controlled-release applications.

RESULTS

The hydrophobic herbicide was incorporated in artificial membranes formed in the interlayer of the inorganic host by using palmitic acid. The synthetic nanohybrid material was characterised by various techniques, and release studies were carried out. In addition, the photosynthetic alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Dang. was treated with the atrazine-containing nanohybrid, which exerted an herbicidal efficacy similar to that of the free herbicide.

CONCLUSION

The herbicide containing nanohybrid could enable a controlled release of the herbicide. In addition, the herbicide would be delivered close to its site of uptake, enhancing efficiency and reducing the required doses.

The influence of ferric iron in calcined nano-Mg/Al hydrotalcite on adsorption of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution

The influence of ferric iron in calcined nano-Mg/Al hydrotalcite on removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution was studied from aspects of structure characteristics, adsorption properties and mechanism discussions. The calcined hydrotalcites (CH-Mg/Al and CH-Mg/Al/Fe) were obtained by thermal decomposition of their corresponding precursors and characterized by XRD, TEM, pH(PZC) and FTIR. The adsorption properties were studied as a function of pH, initial Cr (VI) concentration and contact time. The results showed that the nature of adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous for both CH-Mg/Al and CH-Mg/Al/Fe, but the thermodynamic parameter value changes revealed the addition of Fe(3+) is disadvantage to adsorption process and the theoretical saturated adsorption capacity decreased by approximately 10.2mg/g at tested temperatures. The removal mechanism involved not only intercalation but adsorption on external surface of the layers and interlayer anion exchange for both CH-Mg/Al and CH-Mg/Al/Fe. Furthermore, the results also indicated that intercalation accounts for a large proportion during removal process whatever for CH-Mg/Al, or for CH-Mg/Al/Fe. Additionally, the replacement of Al(3+) by Fe(3+) in CH-Mg/Al led to the interlayer anion exchange more difficult. On the basis of the results, it is concluded that the existence of ferric iron in calcined Mg/Al hydrotalcite is unfavorable to removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution.

Synthesis of a novel layered double hydroxides [MgAl(4)(OH)(12)](Cl)(2)·2.4H(2)O and its anion-exchange properties

A novel layered double hydroxide of Mg and Al with composition [Mg(0.96)Al(4.00)(OH)(12)]Cl(1.86)(CO(3))(0.03)·2.4H(2)O, designated as MgAl(4)-Cl, was synthesized by mixing crystalline gibbsite (γ-Al(OH)(3)) and solid MgCl(2)·6H(2)O with subsequent hydrothermal treatment at 160 °C for 72h. The MgAl(4)-Cl exhibited a crystalline material of a layered structure, as evidenced from X-ray diffraction. Anion uptake experiments with the MgAl(4)-Cl showed that Cl(-) in the interlayer space can be exchanged with anions such as Br(-), H(2)PO(4)(-), CO(3)(2-) or dodecyl sulfate (DS(-)) from aqueous solutions with preservation of the layered structure. Uptake of NO(3)(-), BrO(3)(-) or SO(4)(2-) on the MgAl(4)-Cl showed different behavior; these anions can be exchanged within 1h maintaining the layered structure, but a release of Mg(2+) cations from the sample was observed with increased reaction time, resulting in collapse of the layered structure and formation of the gibbsite phase, as determined from chemical analyses and X-ray diffraction.
