Degradation and mechanism of PAHs by Fe-based activated persulfate: Effect of temperature and noble metal

The accumulation of contaminants like PAHs in soil due to industrialization, urbanization, and intensified agriculture poses environmental challenges, owing to their persistence, hydrophobic nature, and toxicity. Thus, the degradation of PAHs has attracted worldwide attention in soil remediation. This study explored the effect of noble metal and temperature on the degradation of various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil, as well as the types of reactive radicals generated and mechanism. The Fe-Pd/AC and Fe-Pt/AC activated persulfate exhibited high removal efficiency of 19 kinds of PAHs, about 79.95 % and 83.36 %, respectively. Fe-Pt/AC-activated persulfate exhibits superior degradation efficiency than that on Fe-Pd/AC-activated persulfate, due to the higher specific surface area and dispersity of Pt particles, thereby resulting in increased reactive radicals (·OH, SO4-· and ·OOH). Additionally, thermal activation enhances the degradation of PAHs, with initial efficiencies of 64.20 % and 55.49 % on Fe-Pd/AC- and Fe-Pt/AC-activated persulfate systems respectively, increasing to 76.05 % and 73.14 % with elevated temperatures from 21.5 to 50 °C. Metal and thermal activation facilitate S2O82- activation, generating reactive radicals, crucial for the degradation of PAHs via ring opening and oxygen hydrogenation reactions, yielding low-ring oxygen-containing derivatives such as organic acids, keto compounds, ethers, and esters. Furthermore, understanding the impact of parameters such as activation temperature and the types of noble metals on the degradation of PAHs within the activated persulfate system provides a theoretical foundation for the remediation of PAH-contaminated soil.

Differential bioaccumulation and tolerances of massive and branching scleractinian corals to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in situ

Scleractinian corals are capable of accumulating polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in reef environments; however, the mechanism behind their PAHs tolerance is unknown. This study investigated the occurrence and bioaccumulation of PAHs in coral reef ecosystems and examined the physiological responses induced by PAHs in coral hosts and their algal symbionts, the massive coral Galaxea fascicularis and branching coral Pocillopora damicornis. G. fascicularis had a higher PAHs accumulation capacity than P. damicornis. Both the coral hosts and algal symbionts preferentially accumulated acenaphthene, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, and benzo(a)pyrene. The accumulated PAHs by G. fascicularis and P. damicornis hosts was accompanied by a reduction in detoxification ability. The accumulated PAHs could induce oxidative stress in P. damicorni hosts, thus G. fascicularis demonstrated a greater tolerance to PAHs compared to P. damicornis. Meanwhile, their algal symbionts had fewer physiological responses to accumulated PAHs than the coral hosts. Negative effects were not observed with benzo(a)pyrene. Taken together, these results suggest massive and branching scleractinian corals have different PAHs bioaccumulation and tolerance mechanisms, and indicate that long-term PAHs pollution could cause significant alterations of community structures in coral reef ecosystems.

The boom era of emerging contaminants: A review of remediating agricultural soils by biochar

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are widely sourced persistent pollutants that pose a significant threat to the environment and human health. Their footprint spans global ecosystems, making their remediation highly challenging. In recent years, a significant amount of literature has focused on the use of biochar for remediation of heavy metals and organic pollutants in soil and water environments. However, the use of biochar for the remediation of ECs in agricultural soils has not received as much attention, and as a result, there are limited reviews available on this topic. Thus, this review aims to provide an overview of the primary types, sources, and hazards of ECs in farmland, as well as the structure, functions, and preparation types of biochar. Furthermore, this paper emphasizes the importance and prospects of three remediation strategies for ECs in cropland: (i) employing activated, modified, and composite biochar for remediation, which exhibit superior pollutant removal compared to pure biochar; (ii) exploring the potential synergistic efficiency between biochar and compost, enhancing their effectiveness in soil improvement and pollution remediation; (iii) utilizing biochar as a shelter and nutrient source for microorganisms in biochar-mediated microbial remediation, positively impacting soil properties and microbial community structure. Given the increasing global prevalence of ECs, the remediation strategies provided in this paper aim to serve as a valuable reference for future remediation of ECs-contaminated agricultural lands.

Mechanisms and extended kinetic model of thermal desorption in organic-contaminated soil

Thermal desorption is a preferred technology for site remediation due to its various advantages. To ensure the effective removal of different pollutants in practical applications, it is necessary to understand the kinetic behaviors and removal mechanisms of pollutants in thermal desorption process. This paper explored the thermal desorption processes of five organic pollutants (nitrobenzene, naphthalene, n-dodecane, 1-nitronaphthalene, and phenanthrene) at 50-350 °C in two different subsoils with 6-18% moisture content. The results suggested that the thermal desorption process was well-fitted by the exponential decay model (R2 = 0.972-0.999) and could be divided into two distinct stages. The first stage was relatively fast and highly influenced by soil moisture, while the second stage showed a slower desorption rate due to the constraints imposed by the soil texture and structure. The influence of soil moisture on thermal desorption depended on the octanol/water partition coefficient (KOW) of pollutants. Pollutants with log KOW values lower than the critical value exhibited enhanced thermal desorption, while those with log KOW values higher than the critical value were inhibited. The critical value of log KOW might be between 3.33 and 4.46. Changes in soil texture and structure caused by heating promoted thermal desorption, especially for naphthalene, 1-nitronaphthalene and phenanthrene. The differences in texture and structure between the two soils diminished as the temperature increased. Finally, an extended kinetic model under changing temperature conditions was derived, and the simulation results for the two subsoils were very close to the actual thermogravimetric results, with the differences ranging from -1.28% to 0.94% and from -0.67% to 1.35%, respectively. These findings propose new insights into the influencing mechanisms of soil moisture and structure on the thermal desorption of organic pollutants. The extended kinetic model can provide reference for future kinetic research and guide practical site remediation.

From Antagonism to Enhancement: Triton X-100 Surfactant Affects Phenanthrene Interfacial Biodegradation by Mycobacteria through a Shift in Uptake Mechanisms

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as persistent environmental pollutants, often reside in nonaqueous-phase liquids (NAPLs). Mycobacterium sp. WY10, boasting highly hydrophobic surfaces, can adsorb to the oil-water interface, stabilizing the Pickering emulsion and directly accessing PAHs for biodegradation. We investigated the impact of Triton X-100 (TX100) on this interfacial uptake of phenanthrene (PHE) by Mycobacteria, using n-tetradecane (TET) and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) as NAPLs. Interfacial tension, phase behavior, and emulsion stability studies, alongside confocal laser scanning microscopy and electron microscope observations, unveiled the intricate interplay. In surfactant-free systems, Mycobacteria formed stable W/O Pickering emulsions, directly degrading PHE within the NAPLs because of their intimate contact. Introducing low-dose TX100 disrupted this relationship. Preferentially binding to the cells, the surfactant drastically increased the cell hydrophobicity, triggering desorption from the interface and phase separation. Consequently, PAH degradation plummeted due to hindered NAPL access. Higher TX100 concentrations flipped the script, creating surfactant-stabilized O/W emulsions devoid of interfacial cells. Surprisingly, PAH degradation remained efficient. This paradox can be attributed to NAPL emulsification, driven by the surfactant, which enhanced mass transfer and brought the substrate closer to the cells, despite their absence at the interface. This study sheds light on the complex effect of surfactants on Mycobacteria and PAH uptake, revealing an antagonistic effect at low concentrations that ultimately leads to enhanced degradation through emulsification at higher doses. These findings offer valuable insights into optimizing bioremediation strategies in PAH-contaminated environments.

PAH bioremediation with Rhodococcus rhodochrous ATCC 21198: Impact of cell immobilization and surfactant use on PAH treatment and post-remediation toxicity

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are prevalent environmental contaminants that are harmful to ecological and human health. Bioremediation is a promising technique for remediating PAHs in the environment, however bioremediation often results in the accumulation of toxic PAH metabolites. The objectives of this research were to demonstrate the cometabolic treatment of a mixture of PAHs by a pure bacterial culture, Rhodococcus rhodochrous ATCC 21198, and investigate PAH metabolites and toxicity. Additionally, the surfactant Tween ® 80 and cell immobilization techniques were used to enhance bioremediation. Total PAH removal ranged from 70-95% for fluorene, 44-89% for phenanthrene, 86-97% for anthracene, and 6.5-78% for pyrene. Maximum removal was achieved with immobilized cells in the presence of Tween ® 80. Investigation of PAH metabolites produced by 21198 revealed a complex mixture of hydroxylated compounds, quinones, and ring-fission products. Toxicity appeared to increase after bioremediation, manifesting as mortality and developmental effects in embryonic zebrafish. 21198's ability to rapidly transform PAHs of a variety of molecular structures and sizes suggests that 21198 can be a valuable microorganism for catalyzing PAH remediation. However, implementing further treatment processes to address toxic PAH metabolites should be pursued to help lower post-remediation toxicity in future studies.

The function of microbial enzymes in breaking down soil contaminated with pesticides: a review

The use of pesticides and the subsequent accumulation of residues in the soil has become a worldwide problem. Organochlorine (OC) pesticides have spread widely in the environment and caused contamination from past agricultural activities. This article reviews the bioremediation of pesticide compounds in soil using microbial enzymes, including the enzymatic degradation pathway and the recent development of enzyme-mediated bioremediation. Enzyme-mediated bioremediation is divided into phase I and phase II, where the former increases the solubility of pesticide compounds through oxidation-reduction and hydrolysis reactions, while the latter transforms toxic pollutants into less toxic or nontoxic products through conjugation reactions. The identified enzymes that can degrade OC insecticides include dehalogenases, phenol hydroxylase, and laccases. Recent developments to improve enzyme-mediated bioremediation include immobilization, encapsulation, and protein engineering, which ensure its stability, recyclability, handling and storage, and better control of the reaction.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their halogenated derivatives in soil from Yellow River Delta: Distribution, source apportionment, and risk assessment

The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and halogenated PAHs (HPAHs) in surface soils from the petroleum industrial area of the Yellow River Delta (YRD) in China were investigated. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 19.6 to 1560 ng/g, while 22 HPAHs ranged from 2.44 to 14.9 ng/g. Moreover, a high degree of spatial distribution heterogeneity was observed for both PAHs and HPAHs, which is likely attributed to the distinct industrial activities in studied area. The combustion of biomass and petroleum were identified as primary sources of soil PAHs and HPAHs in the YRD. Furthermore, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene exhibited high ecological risks (with risk quotients of 1.47, 1.44, and 1.02, respectively) in specific sites within the YRD. Considering the high toxicity of HPAHs and their potential joint environmental effects with PAHs, continuous attention should be directed towards the environmental risks associated with both PAHs and HPAHs.

AI-assisted systematic review on remediation of contaminated soils with PAHs and heavy metals

This systematic review addresses soil contamination by crude oil, a pressing global environmental issue, by exploring effective treatment strategies for sites co-contaminated with heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Our study aims to answer pivotal research questions: (1) What are the interaction mechanisms between heavy metals and PAHs in contaminated soils, and how do these affect the efficacy of different remediation methods? (2) What are the challenges and limitations of combined remediation techniques for co-contaminated soils compared to single-treatment methods in terms of efficiency, stability, and specificity? (3) How do various factors influence the effectiveness of biological, chemical, and physical remediation methods, both individually and combined, in co-contaminated soils, and what role do specific agents play in the degradation, immobilization, or removal of heavy metals and PAHs under diverse environmental conditions? (4) Do AI-powered search tools offer a superior alternative to conventional search methodologies for executing an exhaustive systematic review? Utilizing big-data analytics and AI tools such as Litmaps.co, ResearchRabbit, and MAXQDA, this study conducts a thorough analysis of remediation techniques for soils co-contaminated with heavy metals and PAHs. It emphasizes the significance of cation-π interactions and soil composition in dictating the solubility and behavior of these pollutants. The study pays particular attention to the interplay between heavy metals and PAH solubility, as well as the impact of soil properties like clay type and organic matter on heavy metal adsorption, which results in nonlinear sorption patterns. The research identifies a growing trend towards employing combined remediation techniques, especially biological strategies like biostimulation-bioaugmentation, noting their effectiveness in laboratory settings, albeit with potentially higher costs in field applications. Plants such as Medicago sativa L. and Solanum nigrum L. are highlighted for their effectiveness in phytoremediation, working synergistically with beneficial microbes to decompose contaminants. Furthermore, the study illustrates that the incorporation of biochar and surfactants, along with chelating agents like EDTA, can significantly enhance treatment efficiency. However, the research acknowledges that varying environmental conditions necessitate site-specific adaptations in remediation strategies. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) findings indicate that while high-energy methods like Steam Enhanced Extraction and Thermal Resistivity - ERH are effective, they also entail substantial environmental and financial costs. Conversely, Natural Attenuation, despite being a low-impact and cost-effective option, may require prolonged monitoring. The study advocates for an integrative approach to soil remediation, one that harmoniously balances environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and the specific requirements of contaminated sites. It underscores the necessity of a holistic strategy that combines various remediation methods, tailored to meet both regulatory compliance and the long-term sustainability of decontamination efforts.

Conversion of locally available materials to biochar and activated carbon for drinking water treatment

For environmental sustainability and to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), drinking water treatment must be done at a reasonable cost with minimal environmental impact. Therefore, treating contaminated drinking water requires materials and approaches that are inexpensive, produced locally, and effortlessly. Hence, locally available materials and their derivatives, such as biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC) were investigated thoroughly. Several researchers and their findings show that the application of locally accessible materials and their derivatives are capable of the adsorptive removal of organic and inorganic contaminants from drinking water. The application of locally available materials such as lignocellulosic materials/waste and its thermo-chemically derived products, including BC and AC were found effective in the treatment of contaminated drinking water. Thus, this review aims to thoroughly examine the latest developments in the use of locally accessible feedstocks for tailoring BC and AC, as well as their features and applications in the treatment of drinking water. We attempted to explain facts related to the potential mechanisms of BC and AC, such as complexation, co-precipitation, electrostatic interaction, and ion exchange to treat water, thereby achieving a risk-free remediation approach to polluted water. Additionally, this research offers guidance on creating efficient household treatment units based on the health risks associated with customized adsorbents and cost-benefit analyses. Lastly, this review work discusses the current obstacles for using locally accessible materials and their thermo-chemically produced by-products to purify drinking water, as well as the necessity for technological interventions.

Degradation of pyrene by Xanthobacteraceae bacterium strain S3 isolated from the rhizosphere sediment of Vallisneria natans: active conditions, metabolite identification, and proposed pathways

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were typical environmental contaminants that accumulated continuously in sediment. Microbial degradation is the main way of PAH degradation in the natural environment. Therefore, expanding the available pool of microbial resources and investigating the molecular degrading mechanisms of PAHs are critical to the efficient control of PAH-polluted sites. Here, a strain (identified as Xanthobacteraceae bacterium) with the ability to degrade pyrene was screened from the rhizosphere sediment of Vallisneria natans. Response surface analysis showed that the strain could degrade pyrene at pH 5-7, NaCl addition 0-1.5%, and temperature 25-40 °C, and the maximum pyrene degradation (~ 95.4%) was obtained under the optimum conditions (pH 7.0, temperature 28.5 °C, and NaCl-free addition) after 72 h. Also, it was observed that the effect of temperature on the degradation ratio was the most significant. Furthermore, eighteen metabolites were identified by mass spectrometry, among which (2Z)-2-hydroxy-3-(4-oxo-4H-phenalen-3-yl) prop-2-enoic acid, 7-(carboxymethyl)-8-formyl-1-naphthyl acetic acid, phthalic acid, naphthalene-1,2-diol, and phenol were the main metabolites. And the degradation pathway of pyrene was proposed, suggesting that pyrene undergoes initial ortho-cleavage under the catalysis of metapyrocatechase to form (2Z)-2-hydroxy-3-(4-oxo-4H-phenalen-3-yl) prop-2-enoic acid. Subsequently, this intermediate was progressively oxidized and degraded to phthalic acid or phenol, which could enter the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Furthermore, the pyrene biodegradation by the strain followed the first-order kinetic model and the degradation rate changed from fast to slow, with the rate remaining mostly slow in the later stages. The slow biodegradation rate was probably caused by a significant amount of phenol accumulation in the initial stage of degradation, which resulted in a decrease in bacterial activity or death.

Biomimetic microfluidic chips for toxicity assessment of environmental pollutants

Various types of pollutants widely present in environmental media, including synthetic and natural chemicals, physical pollutants such as radioactive substances, ultraviolet rays, and noise, as well as biological organisms, pose a huge threat to public health. Therefore, it is crucial to accurately and effectively explore the human physiological responses and toxicity mechanisms of pollutants to prevent diseases caused by pollutants. The emerging toxicological testing method biomimetic microfluidic chips (BMCs) exhibit great potential in environmental pollutant toxicity assessment due to their superior biomimetic properties. The BMCs are divided into cell-on-chips and organ-on-chips based on the distinctions in bionic simulation levels. Herein, we first summarize the characteristics, emergence and development history, composition and structure, and application fields of BMCs. Then, with a focus on the toxicity mechanisms of pollutants, we review the applications and advances of the BMCs in the toxicity assessment of physical, chemical, and biological pollutants, respectively, highlighting its potential and development prospects in environmental toxicology testing. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for further use of BMCs are discussed.

Predicting thermal desorption efficiency of PAHs in contaminated sites based on an optimized machine learning approach

Thermal desorption (TD) remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated sites is known for its high energy consumption and cost implications. The key to solving this issue lies in analyzing the PAHs desorption process, defining remediation endpoints, and developing prediction models to prevent excessive remediation. Establishing an accurate prediction model for remediation efficiency, which involves a systematic consideration of soil properties, TD parameters, and PAH characteristics, poses a significant challenge. This study employed a machine learning approach for predicting the remediation efficiency based on batch experiment results. The results revealed that the extreme gradient boosting (XGB) model yielded the most accurate predictions (R2 = 0.9832). The importance of features in the prediction process was quantified. A model optimization scheme was proposed, which involved integrating features based on their relevance, importance, and partial dependence. This integration not only reduced the number of input features but also enhanced prediction accuracy (R2 = 0.9867) without eliminating any features. The optimized XGB model was validated using soils from sites, demonstrating a prediction error of less than 30%. The optimized XGB model aids in identifying the most optimal conditions for thermal desorption to maximize the remediation efficiency of PAH-contaminated sites under relative cost and energy-saving conditions.

Hydrogeochemical and isotopic evidences of the underlying produced water intrusion into shallow groundwater in an oil production area, Northwest China

The extensive use of fossil fuels (e.g., oil) poses a hidden danger to groundwater quality. However, inorganic pollution has received limited attention compared to organic pollution. In this study, the potential contaminant sources to shallow groundwater were investigated using hydrochemical (e.g., major and trace elements) and isotopic (δ2H and δ18O) methods at an oil field, northwest China, with emphasis on the identification of produced water (PW; oil production-related water) intrusion. The results showed that the groundwater samples can be chemically and isotopically classified into two groups: Group A (severely polluted) and B (slightly or non- polluted). The hydrochemical characteristics of Group A were similar to that of PW, with a comparable Na+/Cl- ratio and elevated levels of Na+, Ca2+, Cl-, Br-, Sr, Ba, Li, B and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs; volatile and semi-volatile) concentration, but lower HCO3- and SO42- contents, and depleted δ2H and δ18O, which was not suitable for drinking. Groundwater salinity sources involve mineral dissolution (silicate, carbonate and evaporite), cation exchange and anaerobic microbial degradation, as well as deep PW intrusion (especially in Group A). The Cl mixing model showed that PW contributed 13.63-27.78 % to Group A, supported by the results of the isotope mixing model based on δ2H and δ18O (24.43-33.29 %). An overall pollution conceptual model involves three modes: fracturing, surface infiltration, and groundwater lateral runoff. This study validates the effectiveness of Na, Cl, Br, Sr, Ba, Li and B as favorable tracers for monitoring PW intrusion.

Appropriate control measure design by rapidly identifying risk areas of volatile organic compounds during the remediation excavation at an organic contaminated site

Many organic contaminated sites require on-site remediation; excavation remediation processes can release many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are key atmospheric pollutants. It is therefore important to rapidly identify VOCs during excavation and map their risk areas for human health protection. In this study, we developed a rapid analysis and assessment method, aiming to and reveal the real-time distribution of VOCs, evaluate their human health risks by quantitative models, and design appropriate control measures. Through on-site diagonal distribution sampling and analysis, VOCs concentration showed a decreasing trend within 5 m from the excavation point and then increased after 5 m with the increase in distance from the excavation point (p < 0.05). The concentrations of VOCs near the dominant wind direction were higher than the concentrations of surrounding pollutants. In contrast with conventional solid-phase adsorption (SPA) and thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) methods for determining the composition and concentration of VOCs, the rapid measurement of VOCs by photo-ionization detector (PID) fitted well with the chemical analysis and modeling assessment of cancer/non-cancer risk. The targeting area was assessed as mild-risk (PID < 10 ppm), moderate-risk (PID from 10 to 40 ppm), and heavy-risk (PID > 40 ppm) areas. Similarly, the human health risks also decreased gradually with the distance from the excavation point, with the main risk area located in the dominant wind direction. The results of rapid PID assessment were comparable to conventional risk evaluation, demonstrating its feasibility in rapidly identifying VOCs releases and assessing the human health risks. This study also suggested appropriate control measures that are important guidance for personal protection during the remediation excavation process.

Effects of Complex Fertilizers on the Properties of Grey Forest Heavy Loamy Soil

The study's main aim was to evaluate the effects of complex mineral fertilizers on the complex properties of heavy loam soils in the grey forests of Russia in terms of applying individual soil nutrition components from experiments with fodder beets. This study employed a rigorous and systematic approach to accomplish the defined goal. Specifically, the research was conducted within a seven-field crop rotation system, with fodder beets serving as the primary experimental crop. In addition, a model experiment resembling a vegetation trial was undertaken, incorporating seven distinct schemes involving various types of fertilizers. This design facilitated the evaluation of the effectiveness of each fertilizer type. The study results demonstrate that complex fertilizers impact the soil's chemical and biophysical parameters. Soil acidity decreases through the use of complex, high-nitrogen fertilizers. Major chemical nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) in plant biomass and soil also have a high degree of transition. It is explained by the effects of combining elements on the destruction intensity of the crystalline lattice in the basic structures of potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen. There is also evidence that complex fertilizers can improve humus quality and replenish its reserves. All the aforementioned impacts of complex fertilizers on the crop contribute to the high productivity and yield of forage beet. The results of the study may help optimize the fertilization process, improve the quality and quantity of agricultural products, as well as increase soil fertility, and reduce the negative impact of agrochemicals on the environment.

Identification of an efficient phenanthrene-degrading Pseudarthrobacter sp. L1SW and characterization of its metabolites and catabolic pathway

Phenanthrene, a typical chemical of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollutants, severely threatens health of wild life and human being. Microbial degradation is effective and environment-friendly for PAH removal, while the phenanthrene-degrading mechanism in Gram-positive bacteria is unclear. In this work, one Gram-positive strain of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), Pseudarthrobacter sp. L1SW, was isolated and identified with high phenanthrene-degrading efficiency and great stress tolerance. It degraded 96.3% of 500 mg/L phenanthrene in 72 h and kept stable degradation performance with heavy metals (65 mg/L of Zn2+, 5.56 mg/L of Ni2+, and 5.20 mg/L of Cr3+) and surfactant (10 CMC of Tween 80). Strain L1SW degraded phenanthrene mainly through phthalic acid pathway, generating intermediate metabolites including cis-3,4-dihydrophenanthrene-3,4-diol, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, and phthalic acid. A novel metabolite (m/z 419.0939) was successfully separated and identified as an end-product of phenanthrene, suggesting a unique metabolic pathway. With the whole genome sequence alignment and comparative genomic analysis, 19 putative genes associated with phenanthrene metabolism in strain L1SW were identified to be distributed in three gene clusters and induced by phenanthrene and its metabolites. These findings advance the phenanthrene-degrading study in Gram-positive bacteria and promote the practical use of PGPR strains in the bioremediation of PAH-contaminated environments.

The remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contaminated soil by immobilized microorganisms using distiller's grains

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a persistent organic pollutant, and their biodegradation in the soil is often limited due to the limited degradation ability of indigenous bacteria and the low activity of exogenous PAH degrading bacteria. Immobilized microbial technology can protect microorganisms from the impact of harsh environments, and distiller's grains have the potential as carriers for microbial immobilization. This study aims to use distiller's grains as a microbial carrier, investigate the feasibility of immobilized microorganisms using distiller's grains for remediation of PAH contaminated soil; explore the relationship between soil nutrient content, consumption, and PAH degradation rate; and reveal the mechanism of bioremediation from the perspective of soil enzyme activity and microbial community composition. The results showed that after 72 days of remediation, the removal rates of phenanthrene and pyrene in the treatment of immobilized microorganisms in distiller grains reached 91.78% and 58.59%, respectively. Distiller grains can serve as a carrier for microorganisms, providing them with shelter and nutrients to enhance their chance of survival. Additionally, they can regulate the composition of soil particles and improve aeration, thereby increasing the efficiency of PAH degradation in soil.

Environmental impact and human health effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and remedial strategies: A detailed review

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) profoundly impact public and environmental health. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of their intricate functions, exposure pathways, and potential health implications is imperative to implement remedial strategies and legislation effectively. This review seeks to explore PAH mobility, direct exposure pathways, and cutting-edge bioremediation technologies essential for combating the pervasive contamination of environments by PAHs, thereby expanding our foundational knowledge. PAHs, characterised by their toxicity and possession of two or more aromatic rings, exhibit diverse configurations. Their lipophilicity and remarkable persistence contribute to their widespread prevalence as hazardous environmental contaminants and byproducts. Primary sources of PAHs include contaminated food, water, and soil, which enter the human body through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal exposure. While short-term consequences encompass eye irritation, nausea, and vomiting, long-term exposure poses risks of kidney and liver damage, difficulty breathing, and asthma-like symptoms. Notably, cities with elevated PAH levels may witness exacerbation of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Bioremediation techniques utilising microorganisms emerge as a promising avenue to mitigate PAH-related health risks by facilitating the breakdown of these compounds in polluted environments. Furthermore, this review delves into the global concern of antimicrobial resistance associated with PAHs, highlighting its implications. The environmental effects and applications of genetically altered microbes in addressing this challenge warrant further exploration, emphasising the dynamic nature of ongoing research in this field.

Fabrication of maleic anhydride-acrylamide copolymer based sodium alginate hydrogel for elimination of metals ions and dyes contaminants from polluted water

The study explores the synergy of biobased polymers and hydrogels for water purification. Polymer nanomaterial's, synthesized by combining acrylamide copolymer with maleic anhydride, were integrated into sodium alginate biopolymer using an eco-friendly approach. Crosslinking agents, calcium chloride and glutaraladehyde, facilitated seamless integration, ensuring non-toxicity, high adsorption performance, and controlled capacity. This innovative combination presents a promising solution for clean and healthy water supplies, addressing the critical need for sustainable environmental practices in water purification. In addition, the polymer sodium alginate hydrogel (MAH@AA-P/SA/H) underwent characterization via the use of several analytical procedures, such as FTIR, XPS, SEM, EDX and XRD. Adsorption studies were conducted on metals and dyes in water, and pollutant removal methods were explored. We investigated several variables (such as pH, starting concentration, duration, and absorbent quantity) affect a material's capacity to be adsorbed. Moreover, the maximum adsorption towards Cu2+ is 754 mg/g while for Cr6+ metal ions are 738 mg/g, while the adsorption towards Congo Red and Methylene Blue dye are 685 mg/g and 653 mg/g correspondingly, within 240 min. Adsorption results were further analyzed using kinetic and isothermal models, which showed that MAH@AA-P/SA/H adsorption is governed by a chemisorption process. Hence, the polymer prepared from sodium alginate hydrogel (MAH@AA-P/SA/H) has remarkable properties as a versatile material for the significantly elimination of harmful contaminants from dirty water.

Biochar modulating soil biological health: A review

Biochar can be used for multifunctional applications including the improvement of soil health and carbon storage, remediation of contaminated soil and water resources, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and odorous compounds, and feed supplementation to improve animal health. A healthy soil preserves microbial biodiversity that is effective in supressing plant pathogens and pests, recycling nutrients for plant growth, promoting positive symbiotic associations with plant roots, improving soil structure to supply water and nutrients, and ultimately enhancing soil productivity and plant growth. As a soil amendment, biochar assures soil biological health through different processes. First, biochar supports habitats for microorganisms due to its porous nature and by promoting the formation of stable soil micro-aggregates. Biochar also serves as a carbon and nutrient source. Biochar alters soil physical and chemical properties, creating optimum soil conditions for microbial diversity. Biochar can also immobilize soil pollutants and reduce their bioavailability that would otherwise inhibit microbial growth. However, depending on the pyrolysis settings and feedstock resources, biochar can be comprised of contaminants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and potentially toxic elements that can inhibit microbial activity, thereby impacting soil health.

The assessment of bioavailability and environmental risk of dissolved and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the seawater of typical bays

The pollution of dissolved and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal waters has been increasing in recent decades. However, limited research has been conducted on the characteristics of dissolved and particulate PAHs in seawater and their associated risk assessment. Here, we focused on the bioavailability and environmental risk of PAHs in four typical bays of Shandong Province, China, and used scallop Chlamys farreri and clam Mactra veneriformis as sentinel species. The results revealed that dissolved PAHs tended to bioaccumulate in scallop C. farreri, and their ecological risk exhibited a significant correlation with the health risk of bioaccumulated PAHs and the bioeffect of screened biomarkers in scallop. Conversely, particulate PAHs demonstrated a higher bioaccumulation potential in the clam M. veneriformis, showing a stronger correlation between their ecological risk, health risk, and bioeffect in clams. This study provides the first elucidation of the connection between the ecological risk, health risk, and bioeffect of PAHs. Furthermore, based on the better correlation of health risk and bioeffect caused by PAHs with total PAHs in seawater, we propose that the clam M. veneriformis is a more suitable sentinel species for assessing environmental risk in typical bays of Shandong Province.

Bioremediation of hydrocarbon by co-culturing of biosurfactant-producing bacteria in microbial fuel cell with Fe2O3-modified anode

The most common type of environmental contamination is petroleum hydrocarbons. Sustainable and environmentally friendly treatment strategies must be explored in light of the increasing challenges of toxic and critical wastewater contamination. This paper deals with the bacteria-producing biosurfactant and their employment in the bioremediation of hydrocarbon-containing waste through a microbial fuel cell (MFC) with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (exoelectrogen) as co-culture for simultaneous power generation. Staphylococcus aureus is isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and is effective in hydrocarbon degradation by utilizing hydrocarbon (engine oil) as the only carbon source. The biosurfactant was purified using silica-gel column chromatography and characterised through FTIR and GCMS, which showed its glycolipid nature. The isolated strains are later employed in the MFCs for the degradation of the hydrocarbon and power production simultaneously which has shown a power density of 6.4 W/m3 with a 93% engine oil degradation rate. A biogenic Fe2O3 nanoparticle (NP) was synthesized using Bambusa arundinacea shoot extract for anode modification. It increased the power output by 37% and gave the power density of 10.2 W/m3. Thus, simultaneous hydrocarbon bioremediation from oil-contamination and energy recovery can be achieved effectively in MFC with modified anode.

Source-specific ecological and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the adjacent coastal area of the Yellow River Estuary, China

Industrialization and urbanization have led to increasing levels of PAH pollution in highly urbanized estuaries and their adjacent coastal areas globally. This study focused on the adjacent coastal area of the Yellow River Estuary (YRE) and collected surface seawater, surface sediment, and clams Ruditapes philippinarum and Mactra veneriformis at four sites (S1 to S4) in May, August, and October 2021 to analyze the source-specific ecological and health risks and bioeffects. The findings revealed that the main sources of PAHs were traffic emission (25.2% to 28.5%), petroleum sources (23.3% to 29.5%), coal combustion (24.7% to 27.5%), and biomass combustion (19.8% to 20.7%). Further, the PMF-RQ and PMF-ILCR analyses indicated that traffic emission was the primary contributor to ecological risks in seawater and health risks in both clam species, while coal combustion was the major contributor in sediment. Taken together, it is recommended to implement control strategies for PAH pollution following the priority order: traffic > coal > petroleum > biomass, to reduce the content and risk of PAHs in the YRE.

Impacts of climate change on the fate of contaminants through extreme weather events

The direct impacts of climate change involve a multitude of phenomena, including rising sea levels, intensified severe weather events such as droughts and flooding, increased temperatures leading to wildfires, and unpredictable fluctuations in rainfall. This comprehensive review intends to examine firstly the probable consequences of climate change on extreme weather events such as drought, flood and wildfire. This review subsequently examines the release and transformation of contaminants in terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric environments in response to extreme weather events driven by climate change. While drought and flood influence the dynamics of inorganic and organic contaminants in terrestrial and aquatic environments, thereby influencing their mobility and transport, wildfire results in the release and spread of organic contaminants in the atmosphere. There is a nascent awareness of climate change's influence of climate change-induced extreme weather events on the dynamics of environmental contaminants in the scientific community and decision-making processes. The remediation industry, in particular, lags behind in adopting adaptive measures for managing contaminated environments affected by climate change-induced extreme weather events. However, recognizing the need for assessment measures represents a pivotal first step towards fostering more adaptive practices in the management of contaminated environments. We highlight the urgency of collaboration between environmental chemists and climate change experts, emphasizing the importance of jointly assessing the fate of contaminants and rigorous action to augment risk assessment and remediation strategies to safeguard the health of our environment.

A novel eco-friendly strategy for removing phenanthrene from groundwater: Synergism of nanobubbles and rhamnolipid

Nanobubbles (NBs), given their unique properties, could theoretically be paired with rhamnolipids (RL) to tackle polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contamination in groundwater. This approach may overcome the limitations of traditional surfactants, such as high toxicity and low efficiency. In this study, the remediation efficiency of RL, with or without NBs, was assessed through soil column experiments (soil contaminated with phenanthrene). Through the analysis of the two-site non-equilibrium diffusion model, there was a synergistic effect between NBs and RL. The introduction of NBs led to a reduction of up to 24.3 % in the total removal time of phenanthrene. The direct reason for this was that with NBs, the retardation factor of RL was reduced by 1.9 % to 15.4 %, which accelerated the solute replacement of RL. The reasons for this synergy were multifaceted. Detailed analysis reveals that NBs improve RL's colloidal stability, increase its absolute zeta potential, and reduce its soil adsorption capacity by 13.3 %-19.9 %. Furthermore, NBs and their interaction with RL substantially diminish the surface tension, contact angle, and dynamic viscosity of the leaching solution. These changes in surface thermodynamic and rheological properties significantly enhance the migration efficiency of the eluent. The research outcomes facilitate a thorough comprehension of NBs' attributes and their relevant applications, and propose an eco-friendly method to improve the efficiency of surfactant remediation.

New insights into thermal desorption remediation of pyrene-contaminated soil based on an optimized numerical model

Thermal desorption (TD) is known as an effective technique to remediate PAHs-contaminated sites. However, effectively removing PAHs using TD while saving time, and energy, and minimizing soil damage remains a challenge. In this study, we examined the combined effects of various factors on the removal efficiency of pyrene (PYR) by TD and developed an optimal numerical model based on conducting a series of soil experiments. The results showed that temperature (T) and time (t) promoted the desorption of PYR, while water (Sw) and organic matter (fom) were just the opposite. Besides, water and organic matter had a synergistic effect proportionally. It was found that adjusting the soil-water ratio (which can be controlled by organic matter) maximized the desorption rate of PYR. An ideal Sw/fom 1.56 and a minimized recommended temperature (173 °C) were proposed based on the model. Finally, the efficacy of the optimized scheme was validated in real-world site soil. These findings not only mechanistically revealed the desorption behavior of PYR under the influence of various factors, but also provided an optimized scheme for efficiently removing PAHs using TD, thereby accelerating the remediation process and reducing energy consumption. The modeling ideas and conclusions obtained may be applicable to other PAHs, guiding the effective remediation of PAHs-polluted sites.

Microbes and microbial strategies in carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons remediation: a systematic review

Degradation, detoxification, or removal of the omnipresent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the ecosphere as well as their prevention from entering into food chain has never appeared simple. In this context, cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable solutions like microbe-mediated strategies have been adopted worldwide. With this connection, measures have been taken by multifarious modes of microbial remedial strategies, i.e., enzymatic degradation, biofilm and biosurfactant production, application of biochar-immobilized microbes, lactic acid bacteria, rhizospheric-phyllospheric-endophytic microorganisms, genetically engineered microorganisms, and bioelectrochemical techniques like microbial fuel cell. In this review, a nine-way directional approach which is based on the microbial resources reported over the last couple of decades has been described. Fungi were found to be the most dominant taxa among the CPAH-degrading microbial community constituting 52.2%, while bacteria, algae, and yeasts occupied 37.4%, 9.1%, and 1.3%, respectively. In addition to these, category-wise CPAH degrading efficiencies of each microbial taxon, consortium-based applications, CPAH degradation-related molecular tools, and factors affecting CPAH degradation are the other important aspects of this review in light of their appropriate selection and application in the PAH-contaminated environment for better human-health management in order to achieve a sustainable ecosystem.

The role of microplastics in the process of laccase-assisted phytoremediation of phenanthrene-contaminated soil

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are highly toxic organic pollutants widely distributed in terrestrial environments and laccase was considered as an effective enzyme in PAHs bioremediation. However, laccase-assisted phytoremediation of PAHs-contaminated soil has not been reported. Moreover, the overuse of plastic films in agriculture greatly increased the risk of co-existence of PAHs and microplastics in soil. Microplastics can adsorb hydrophobic organics, thus altering the bioavailability of PAHs and ultimately affecting the removal of PAHs from soil. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of laccase-assisted maize (Zea mays L.) in the remediation of phenanthrene (PHE)-contaminated soil and investigate the effect of microplastics on this remediation process. The results showed that the combined application of laccase and maize achieved a removal efficiency of 83.47 % for soil PHE, and laccase significantly reduced the accumulation of PHE in maize. However, microplastics significantly inhibited the removal of soil PHE (10.88 %) and reduced the translocation factor of PHE in maize (87.72 %), in comparison with PHE + L treatment. Moreover, microplastics reduced the laccase activity and the relative abundance of some PAHs-degrading bacteria in soil. This study provided an idea for evaluating the feasibility of the laccase-assisted plants in the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil, paving the way for reducing the risk of secondary pollution in the process of phytoremediation.

A state-of-art-review on emerging contaminants: Environmental chemistry, health effect, and modern treatment methods

Pollution problems are increasingly becoming e a priority issue from both scientific and technological points of view. The dispersion and frequency of pollutants in the environment are on the rise, leading to the emergence have been increasing, including of a new class of contaminants that not only impact the environment but also pose risks to people's health. Therefore, developing new methods for identifying and quantifying these pollutants classified as emerging contaminants is imperative. These methods enable regulatory actions that effectively minimize their adverse effects to take steps to regulate and reduce their impact. On the other hand, these new contaminants represent a challenge for current technologies to be adapted to control and remove emerging contaminants and involve innovative, eco-friendly, and sustainable remediation technologies. There is a vast amount of information collected in this review on emerging pollutants, comparing the identification and quantification methods, the technologies applied for their control and remediation, and the policies and regulations necessary for their operation and application. In addition, This review will deal with different aspects of emerging contaminants, their origin, nature, detection, and treatment concerning water and wastewater.

Optimisation of PAHs biodegradation by Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa through response surface methodology

Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Box-Behnken Design (BBD) is used to optimise the Phenanthrene (PHE) degradation process by Klebsiella pneumoniae (K bacteria) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P bacteria). Wherein substrate concentration, temperature, and pH at three levels are used as independent variables, and degradation rate of PHE as dependent variables (response). The statistical analysis, via ANOVA, shows coefficient of determination R2 as 0.9848 with significant P value 0.0001 fitting in second-order quadratic regression model for PAHs removal by Klebsiella pneumonia, and R2 as 0.9847 with significant P value 0.0001 by P bacteria. According to the model analysis, temperature (P < 0.0006) is the most influential factor for PHE degradation efficiency by K bacteria, while pH (P < 0.0001) is the most influential factor for PHE degradation by P bacteria. The predicted optimum parameters for K bacteria, namely, temperature, substrate concentration, and pH are found to be 34.00℃, 50.80 mg/L, and 7.50, respectively, and those for P bacteria are 33.30℃, 52.70 mg/L, and 7.20, respectively. At these optimum conditions, the observed PHE removal rates by two bacteria are found to be 83.36% ± 2.1% and 81.23% ± 1.6% in validation experiments, respectively. Thus RSM can optimise the biodegradation conditions of both bacteria for PHE.

Occurrence, distribution and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils around main water source areas of Beijing, China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban environments have been globally concerned due to their significant health impacts on residents. However, little is known about potential risks of PAHs from centralized water source areas. In the present study, 326 soils samples from the main water source areas of Beijing were collected and the occurrence, source appointment, and risks of PAHs were systematically investigated based on the monitoring results from high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The total PAHs (∑16 PAHs) concentrations ranged from 5.70 to 1512 ng/g with median value of 44.2 ng/g, in which 4-ring and 5-ring groups were the major components. PAHs concentrations in the cultivated land were significantly higher than other areas, which could reflect significant impact of soil organic matter and total nitrogen contents on the spatial variations of PAHs. Further source identifications through positive matrix factorization model (PMF) revealed that biomass (22.5%), coal (21.4%), gasoline (17.6%) and diesel (16.4%) combustion were dominant sources of soil PAHs in the study area. Moreover, the risk assessment indicated that total ecological and health risk of PAHs were negligible, but individual PAH, including pyrene and benzo(b)fluoranthene, should be concerned due to their potential risks in several monitored stations located in the secondary protection area of four reservoirs. Our study provided new insights into environmental risks of soils in main water source areas from PAHs and could be helpful for organic micropollutant controlling and drinking water safety in rapidly urbanizing cities.

A comprehensive review on immobilized microbes - biochar and their environmental remediation: Mechanism, challenges and future perspectives

The environment worldwide has been contaminated by toxic pollutants and chemicals through anthropogenic activities, industrial growth, and urbanization. Microbial remediation is seen to be superior compared to conventional remediation due to its low cost, selectivity towards particular metal ions, and high efficiency. One key strategy in enhancing microbial remediation is employing an immobilization technique with biochar as a carrier. This review provides a comprehensive summary of sources and toxic health effects of hazardous water pollutants on human health and the environment. Biochar enhances the growth and proliferation of contaminant-degrading microbes. The combined activity of biochar and microbes in eliminating the contaminants has gained the researcher's interest. Biochar demonstrates its biocompatibility by fostering microbial populations, the release of enzymes, and protecting the microbes from the acute toxicity of surrounding contaminants. The current review complies with the immobilization technique and remediation mechanisms of microbes in pollutant removal. This review also emphasizes the combined utilization, environmental adaptability, and the potential of the combined effect of immobilized microbes and biochar in the remediation of contaminants. Challenges and future outlooks are urged to commercialize the immobilized microbes-biochar interaction mechanism for environmental remediation.

Radial Oxygen Loss from the Roots of Mangrove Seedlings Enhances the Removal of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil poses a significant global environmental concern, particularly in coastal wetlands. Mangrove ecosystems exhibit enormous potential in environmental purification; however, the underlying mechanisms involved in the degradation of pollutants (e.g., PAHs) remain ambiguous. In the present investigation, a soil pot experiment was conducted with the addition of pyrene to evaluate the effect of radial oxygen loss (ROL) from roots on PAH degradation using three mangrove seedlings (Rhizophora stylosa, Aegiceras corniculatum, and Avicennia marina). The results showed that mangrove plantation can significantly promote the efficiency of pyrene removal. As for the three mangrove species studied, the greatest removal rate (90.75%) was observed in the soils associated with A. marina, followed by A. corniculatum (83.83%) and R. stylosa (77.15%). The higher PAH removal efficiency of A. marina can be partially attributed to its distinctive root anatomical structure, characterized by a thin exodermis and high porosity, which facilitates ROL from the roots. The results from qPCR further demonstrate that ROL is beneficial for promoting the abundance of PAH-ring hydroxylating dioxygenase gene, leading to a higher removal efficiency. Additionally, Rhizobiales, Defferrisomatales, and Ardenticatenales may also play important roles in the process of pyrene degradation. In summary, this study provides evidence for elucidating the mechanism of PAH removal from the perspective of ROL, thereby contributing valuable insights for species selection during mangrove restoration and remediation.

The ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars: Can it help control prospective marine pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Shandong Province, China?

The constantly increasing amount of road vehicles causes massive exhaust emissions of pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), necessitating a global responsibility to implement the policy of the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars. Here, we assessed the policy control efficiency on marine pollution of PAHs in China through scenario modeling and prediction models, based on pollution monitoring, risk assessment, and source apportionment of PAHs in typical bays of Shandong Province. The results showed that in 2021, the pollution risk levels were relatively low (HI: 0.008-0.068, M-ERM-Q: 0.001-0.016, IBR: 1.23-2.69, ILCR: 8.11 ×10-6-1.99 ×10-5), and PAHs were mainly derived from traffic emissions (24.9%-35.2%), coal combustion (25.2%-32.9%), petroleum (17.2%-28.9%), and biomass combustion (17.6%-22.8%). In 2050, the predicted decrease of pollution risk values after the implementation of the policy was significant (12%-26%), and the gap between 2021 and 2050 was also significantly huge (18%-85%) without considering possible substitution of conventional energy. Collectively, this study built systematic approaches for assessing prospective marine pollution of PAHs. However, due to the particularity of Shandong Province, i.e., its national predominance of conventional energy consumption, the policy may be more effective when it comes to other coastal areas worldwide, calling for a larger scale research.

Sediment core records and impact factors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Chinese lakes

Lake sediment is a natural sink for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAH sedimentation characteristics and their impact factors of Chinese lakes have mainly been qualitative assessed. However, quantitative impacts of PAH sedimentation from different factors have not been well analyzed. To fill this gap, we screened PAH sedimentation records from the literature, for 51 lakes in China and other regions of the world, to identify historical concentration variation and the impact factors of PAHs in different regions, in lake sediment. The results show that PAH concentrations in the sediment core in the selected Chinese lakes (478 ± 812 ng/g dry weight (dw)) were significantly lower than those in North America (5518 ± 6572 ng/g dw) and Europe (3817 ± 4033 ng/g dw). From 1900 to 2015, most of the lakes in China showed an increasing trend of PAH sedimentation concentrations, with the lakes in Southeastern China showed a decreasing trend of PAH concentration in the period of 2001-2015, which was later than the peak times shown in Western countries (1941-1970). The 2-3-ring PAHs were the main components in the sediment core of Chinese lakes, but the proportion to the total PAHs decreased from 72% in 1900-1940 to 55% in 2001-2015. Generalized additive modeling (GAM) was adopted to simulate the associations between PAH sedimentation records and the impact factors. There are large regional variations of economic and industrial development in China. The impact factors of PAH accumulation in the lake sediments differ in different regions. However, population and the consumption of coal, pesticides, and fertilizer were identified to be the most important impact factors influencing PAH sedimentation. The Chinese government needs to strengthen control measures on pollutant discharge to reduce the anthropogenic impact of PAH sedimentation in lakes.

Biodegradation of Benzo[a]pyrene by a White-Rot Fungus Phlebia acerina: Surfactant-Enhanced Degradation and Possible Genes Involved

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent environmental pollutants that pose a threat to human health. Among these PAHs, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a five-ring compound, exhibits high resistance to biodegradation. White-rot fungus Phlebia acerina S-LWZ20190614-6 has demonstrated higher BaP degradation capabilities compared with Phanerochaete chrysosporium and P. sordida YK-624, achieving a degradation rate of 57.7% after 32 days of incubation under a ligninolytic condition. To further enhance the biodegradation rate, three nonionic surfactants were used, and the addition of 1 or 2 g·L-1 of polyethylene glycol monododecyl ether (Brij 30) resulted in nearly complete BaP biodegradation by P. acerina S-LWZ20190614-6. Interestingly, Brij 30 did not significantly affect the activity of manganese peroxidase and lignin peroxidase, but it did decrease laccase activity. Furthermore, the impact of cytochrome P450 on BaP degradation by P. acerina S-LWZ20190614-6 was found to be relatively mild. Transcriptomic analysis provided insights into the degradation mechanism of BaP, revealing the involvement of genes related to energy production and the synthesis of active enzymes crucial for BaP degradation. The addition of Brij 30 significantly upregulated various transferase and binding protein genes in P. acerina S-LWZ20190614-6. Hence, the bioremediation potential of BaP by the white-rot fungus P. acerina S-LWZ20190614-6 holds promise and warrants further exploration.

Enhancement of electrokinetic-phytoremediation by Ophiopogon japonicus: stimulation of electrokinetic on root system and improvement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation

Root systems are sensitive to voltage and tend to improve the degradation of organic pollutants by promoting the root exudates and increasing microbial enzyme activity in the rhizosphere under the effect of electrokinetic. In this study, electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation (EKPR) was applied for the remediation of soil containing phenanthrene (PHE) and pyrene (PYR). Direct current (DC) voltage (1 V cm-1) was applied across the soils for 30 days following 3 treatment schedules (0 h, 4 h, and 12 h per day), referred to as treatments EK0, EK4, and EK12. Electrokinetic assistance improved phytoremediation. Compared to EK0, the removal of PHE and PYR increased by 51.79% and 45.07% for EK4 and by 43.18% and 38.75% for EK12. The applied voltage promoted root growth, stimulated the root exudate release, and increased accumulation of PHE and PYR by plants, and the effect was most pronounced in treatment EK4. Catalase and urease activities in rhizosphere soil also increased, by respective increments of 44.51% and 40.86% for EK4 and by 28.53% and 21.24% for EK12. In this study, we demonstrated that a low voltage applied for an appropriate duration (4 h per day) improves removal of PAHs by stimulating root growth, promoting the root exudate release and enhancing enzyme activity in the microbiome of rhizosphere soil.

Restoration of soils contaminated with PAHs by the mixture of zeolite composites mixed with exogenous organic matter and mineral salts

The major cause of soil degradation (contamination, erosion, compaction) is closely linked to agriculture, i.e., unsustainable agriculture practices, which are reflected in the depletion of the soil organic carbon pool, loss in soil biodiversity, and reduction of C sink capacity in soils. Therefore, the agricultural practice of applying carbon-rich materials into the soil is an attractive solution for climate change mitigation and soil ecosystem sustainability. The paper aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the addition of organic-mineral mixtures to the mineral salts (NPK), including the exogenous organic matter (lignite) mixed with zeolite-carbon (NaX-C) or zeolite-vermiculite (NaX-Ver) composites in the restoration of soils contaminated with PAHs. The addition of zeolite composites to fertilizer resulted in a significant reduction in soil PAH levels and a corresponding reduction in plant tissue content, without compromising yields, compared to the control and separate application of NPK. A Significant correlation between PAHs and pHH2O, pHKCl, EC and dehydrogenase activity (DhA) was found in soils. The addition of zeolite composites with lignite significantly reduced the content of PAHs in straws, especially following the application of NaX-C. However, in the case of grains, the highest percentage reduction in comparison to NPK was observed for the highest dose of NaX-Ver.

Mechanism of nitro-byproducts formation during persulfate-based electrokinetic in situ oxidation for remediation of anthracene contaminated soil

Persulfate-based electrokinetic (EK) chemical oxidation appears to be a novel and viable strategy for the in situ remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) polluted soil; however, the possible toxic byproducts of PAHs have been overlooked. In this study, we systematically investigated the formation mechanism of the nitro-byproducts of anthracene (ANT) during the EK process. Electrochemical experiments revealed that NH₄⁺ and NO₂^- originating from nitrate electrolyte or soil substrates were oxidized to NO₂^• and NO^• in the presence of SO₄^•-. Liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS/MS) analysis with ¹⁵N labeling revealed the formation of nitro-byproducts (14 kinds), including 1-hydroxy-4-nitro-anthraquinone and its similar derivatives, 4-nitrophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol. The nitration pathways of ANT have been proposed and described, mainly including the formation of hydroxyl-anthraquinone-oxygen and phenoxy radicals and the subsequent addition of NO₂^• and NO^•. ANT-based formation of nitro-byproducts during EK, which is usually underestimated, should be further investigated due to their enhanced acute toxicity, mutagenic effects, and potential threat to the ecosystem.

Metabolic capacity to alter polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and its microbe-mediated remediation

The elimination of contaminants caused by anthropogenic activities and rapid industrialization can be accomplished using the widely used technology of bioremediation. Recent years have seen significant advancement in our understanding of the bioremediation of coupled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contamination caused by microbial communities including bacteria, algae, fungi, yeast, etc. One of the newest techniques is microbial-based bioremediation because of its greater productivity, high efficiency, and non-toxic approach. Microbes are appealing candidates for bioremediation because they have amazing metabolic capacity to alter most types of organic material and can endure harsh environmental conditions. Microbes have been characterized as extremophiles that can survive in a variety of environmental circumstances, making them the treasure troves for environmental cleanup and the recovery of contaminated soil. In this study, the mechanisms underlying the bioremediation process as well as the current situation of microbial bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon are briefly described.

Bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: An updated microbiological review

A class of organic priority pollutants known as PAHs is of critical public health and environmental concern due to its carcinogenic properties as well as its genotoxic, mutagenic, and cytotoxic properties. Research to eliminate PAHs from the environment has increased significantly due to awareness about their negative effects on the environment and human health. Various environmental factors, including nutrients, microorganisms present and their abundance, and the nature and chemical properties of the PAH affect the biodegradation of PAHs. A large spectrum of bacteria, fungi, and algae have ability to degrade PAHs with the biodegradation capacity of bacteria and fungi receiving the most attention. A considerable amount of research has been conducted in the last few decades on analyzing microbial communities for their genomic organization, enzymatic and biochemical properties capable of degrading PAH. While it is true that PAH degrading microorganisms offer potential for recovering damaged ecosystems in a cost-efficient way, new advances are needed to make these microbes more robust and successful at eliminating toxic chemicals. By optimizing some factors like adsorption, bioavailability and mass transfer of PAHs, microorganisms in their natural habitat could be greatly improved to biodegrade PAHs. This review aims to comprehensively discuss the latest findings and address the current wealth of knowledge in the microbial bioremediation of PAHs. Additionally, recent breakthroughs in PAH degradation are discussed in order to facilitate a broader understanding of the bioremediation of PAHs in the environment.

A critical insight into occurrence and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their green remediation approaches

Over the last century, the tremendous growth in industrial activities particularly in the sectors of pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and the reckless application of fertilizers and insecticides has raised the contamination of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) tremendously. For more than a decade, the main focus of environmental experts is to come up with management approaches for the clean-up of sites polluted with PAHs. These are ubiquitous in nature i.e., widely distributed in ecosystem ranging from soil, air and marine water. Most of the PAHs possess immunotoxicity, carcinogenicity and genotoxicity. Being highly soluble in lipids, they are readily absorbed into the mammalian gastro intestinal tract. They are widely distributed with marked tendency of getting localized into body fat in varied tissues. Several remediation technologies have been tested for the removal of these environmental contaminants, particularly bioremediation has turned out to be a hope as the safest and cost-effective option. Therefore, this review first discusses various sources of PAHs, their effect on human health and interactions of PAHs with soils and sediments. In this review, a holistic insight of current scenario of existing remediation technologies and how they can be improvised along with the hindrances in the path of these technologies are properly addressed.

Efficient removal of polybrominated diphenyl ethers from soil washing effluent by dummy molecular imprinted adsorbents: Selectivity and mechanisms

Surfactant enhanced elution is an effective method for removing hydrophobic organic pollutants from soils. The key to the development of leaching technology is selective removal of targeted pollutants in soil washing effluent and recycling of surfactant solutions. In this study, a molecular imprinting technique was applied to selectively sorb polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in soil washing effluent. The novel molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) using different template molecules were synthesized by precipitation polymerization. Adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of MIPs were studied through experiments and theoretical calculations. The results show that 4-bromo-4'-hydroxybiphenyl and toluene can be effective imprinting molecule for MIPs synthesis. The maximal adsorption capacity of selected dummy molecular imprinted polymer (D₁-MIP) was 1032.36 µmol/g, and that of part molecular imprinted polymer (P-MIP) was 981.13 µmol/g. Their imprinting factors in 5 PBDEs adsorption ranged from 2.13 to 5.88, the recovery percentage of Triton X-100 can reach 99.09%, confirming the feasibility of reusing surfactant. Various PBDEs could be removed by MIPs, and Quantitative Structure Property Relationship analysis revealed that PBDEs' molecular volume, planarity, polarity, and hydrophobicity have major influences on their adsorption performance. DFT calculation revealed that Van der Waals force and hydrogen bonding played important roles during selective adsorption. These results can provide effective theoretical guidance for surfactant enhanced soil elution in practical engineering applications.

Phenanthrene regulates metabolic pathways for hydrogen accumulation in sludge alkaline dark fermentation

The influence of phenanthrene (PHE), a general polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in waste activated sludge, on sludge alkaline dark fermentation for hydrogen accumulation was investigated prospectively. The yield of hydrogen was 16.2 mL/g TSS with 50 mg/kg TSS PHE, which was 1.3-fold greater than that of the control. Mechanism research demonstrated that hydrogen production and the abundance of functional microorganisms were facilitated, whereas those of homoacetogenesis were reduced. The activity of pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase in the conversion of pyruvate to reduced ferredoxin for hydrogen production was promoted by 57.2%, and that of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase and formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase, closely associated with hydrogen consumption, was suppressed by 60.5% and 55.9%, respectively. Moreover, the encoding genes involved in pyruvate metabolism were significantly up-regulated, while genes related to consuming hydrogen to reduce carbon dioxide and produce 5-methyltetrahydrofolate were down-regulated. This study notably illustrates the effect of PHE on hydrogen accumulation from metabolic pathways.

Organic amendments for in situ immobilization of heavy metals in soil: A review

There is a growing need for soil remediation due to the increase in heavy metals (HMs) migrating into the soil environment, especially those from man-made sources dominated by industry and agriculture. In situ immobilization technology, because of its lower life cycle environmental footprint, can achieve "green and sustainable remediation" of soil heavy-metal pollution. Among the various in situ immobilization remediation agents, organic amendments (OAs) stand out as they can act as soil conditioners while acting as HMs immobilization agents, and therefore have excellent application prospects. In this paper, the types and remediation effects of OAs for HMs in situ immobilization in soil are summarized. OAs have an important effect on the soil environment and other active substances in soil while interacting with HMs in soil. Based on these factors, the principle and mechanism of HMs in situ immobilization in soil using OAs are summarized. Given the complex differential characteristics of soil itself, it is impossible to determine whether it can remain stable after heavy-metal remediation; therefore, there is still a gap in knowledge regarding the compatibility and long-term effectiveness of OAs with soil. In the future, it is necessary to develop a reasonable HMs contamination remediation program for in situ immobilization and long-term monitoring through interdisciplinary integration techniques. These findings are expected to provide a reference for the development of advanced OAs and their applications in engineering.

Surfactant enhanced thermally activated persulfate remediating PAHs-contaminated soil: Insight into compatibility, degradation processes and mechanisms

Although advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on persulfate (PS) is an attractive approach for repairing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soils, limited oxidizability of PAHs and efficient in-situ activation of PS hinder its practical applications. In this study, we comprehensively examined the contributions of five representative surfactants on the oxidative remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil in terms of degradation kinetics of the pollutants, and further proposed an innovative coupling strategy of surfactant-enhanced thermally activated PS remediating PAHs-contaminated soil. The results showed that the degradation process of PAHs in soil was significantly facilitated only via adding sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) and fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetic pattern. The removal of phenanthrene (PHE) reached 98.56% at 50 mM PS, 50 °C, 5 g L^-1 SDBS and 48 h reaction time, accompanying an increase of 25% in reaction rate constant from 0.0572 h^-1 (without SDBS) to 0.0715 h^-1. More importantly, SDBS-enhanced thermally activated PS degrading PAHs with higher benzene rings were more effective as the reaction rate constants of pyrene (PYR) and benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) were significantly increased by 49.40% and 56.86%. Additionally, only appropriate dosages (5-10 g L^-1) of SDBS facilitated the oxidative degradation of PHE, as well as the aging time of contaminant-soil contact slowed down the enhancement of oxidative degradation of PHE by SDBS. Scavenger experiments demonstrated that SO₄^·- and ¹O₂ were the dominant reactive oxygen species. Finally, a possible oxidative degradation pathway of PHE was proposed, and the toxicity of derived intermediates got alleviation by the assessment using the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool. This investigation was promising for in situ scale-up remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

Total and bioavailable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in unused and operated heat-not-burn tobacco products and conventional cigarettes

Tobacco product waste poses a global environmental issue, affecting urban and coastal areas alike. The present studies report, for the first time, the total and bioavailable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations in unused and operated heat-not-burn (HnBs) tobacco products. To enable direct comparisons, identical sets of studies were conducted using conventional cigarettes (CCs). Five low-molecular PAHs were determined in HnBs at total concentrations that were of the same order before and after operation (Σ₅PAH = 47.37 ± 3.44 ng unit^-1 and Σ₅PAH = 69.36 ± 5.78 ng unit^-1 in unused and used HnBs, respectively). The incomplete combustion of organics during smoking of CCs, yielded substantially higher amounts of PAHs with their sum (Σ₁₀PAHs = 1449 ± 113 ng unit^-1) being >20 times larger than those in HnBs. The tobacco and filter were the most contaminated parts in HnBs. In unused CCs, tobacco had the highest PAHs load and after smoking, the spent filter was the most contaminated part, containing ∼80% of the total amount of PAHs. Naphthalene was the most abundant PAH detected in all tobacco products. Despite the high total PAH concentrations found in smoked CCs, the sums of the bioavailable PAH concentrations were of the same order in all tested tobacco products (Σ₅PAH = 61.38 ± 1.79 ng unit^-1 in unused HnBs, Σ₅PAH = 70.87 ± 7.67 ng unit^-1 in used HnBs, Σ₄PAH = 66.92 ± 5.95 ng unit^-1 in unused CCs, and Σ₆PAH = 47.94 ± 1.26 ng unit^-1 in smoked CCs). This finding was related to smoking affecting PAHs' leachability from CCs and delaying their desorption from the solid matrix. Adjusting the pH, salt and humic acids content at environmentally relevant values did not affect PAHs leaching at 24 h of soaking. Finally, the leaching behavior of PAHs in natural waters (river water, rainwater, and seawater) was found similar to that in ultrapure water, experimentally verifying the ability of tobacco product waste to leach PAHs into the aquatic environment.

Contemporary Drift in Emerging Micro(nano)plastics Removal and Upcycling Technologies from Municipal Wastewater Sludge: Strategic Innovations and Prospects

Purpose of Review

Annually, huge amounts of microplastics (MPs) are added to farmlands through sewage sludge (SS)/biosolid applications as a fertilizer. Most research emphasizes the enormity of the problem and demonstrates the fate, impacts, and toxicity of MPs during SS treatment processes and land applications. None has addressed the management strategies. To address the gaps, the current review evaluates the performance analysis of conventional and advanced sludge treatment methods in eliminating MPs from sludge.

Recent Findings

The review uncovers that the occurrence and characteristics of MPs in SS are highly governed by factors such as population density, speed and level of urbanization, citizens' daily habits, and treatment units in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Furthermore, conventional sludge treatment processes are ineffective in eliminating MPs from SS and are accountable for the increased small-sized MPs or micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) along with altered surface morphology facilitating more co-contaminant adsorption. Simultaneously, MPs can influence the operation of these treatment processes depending on their size, type, shape, and concentration. The review reveals that research to develop advanced technology to remove MPs efficiently from SS is still at a nascent stage.

Summary

This review provides a comprehensive analysis of MPs in the SS, by corroborating state-of-the-knowledge, on different aspects, including the global occurrence of MPs in WWTP sludge, impacts of different conventional sludge treatment processes on MPs and vice versa, and efficiency of advanced sludge treatment and upcycling technologies to eliminate MPs, which will facilitate the development of mitigation measures from the systematic and holistic level.

Field measures of strengthen plant-microbial remediation of PAHs-FQs compound pollution

In this study, five PAHs (benzo [b] fluoranthene (BbF), phenanthrene (Phe), fluoranthene (Flu), fluorene (Fl), benzo [A] pyrene (Bap)), and five FQs (ofloxacin (OFL), enrofloxacin (ENR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), norfloxacin (NOR), lomefloxacin (LOM)) were selected as ligands; peroxidase (1NML) was selected as receptor degrading protein. In the plant-microbial degradation, the factors with significant inhibitory effects are NOR, Bap, CIP, ENR, OFL, Flu, LOM, Phe, Fl, and BbF by the fractional factorial design experiment and molecular docking-assisted molecular dynamics methods. Using Taguchi experiment and molecular dynamics simulation methods, the main external field measures were designed and screened to effectively promote the degradation of PAHs-FQs under the combined pollution scenarios of Bap-CIP and BbF-NOR, respectively. The peroxidase mutation design plans with enhanced substrate affinity were then designed and screened using the DS software by predicting the virtual key amino acid of peroxidase. The novel biodegradable enzymes 2YCD-1, 2YCD-4, 2YCD-5, 2YCD-7, and 2YCD-9 had better structures and showed excellent degradability for PAHs and FQs. This study explored the degradation rules of the composite pollutants in the coexistence systems of multiple PAHs and FQs, providing the best external field measures for the control and treatment of the combined pollution effects of different PAHs and FQs. Overall, the current study has important practical significance for promoting the plant-microbial joint remediation of PAHs-FQs pollution and for reducing the combined pollution of PAHs and FQs in farmland systems.
