Synergistic effect of cyano defects and CaCO3 in graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets for efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic NO removal

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of Bi2O2CO3/Bi4O5Br2/reduced graphene oxide Z-schemehe terojunction via a one-pot room-temperature synthesis

Bi2O2CO3(BOC)/Bi4O5Br2(BOB)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) Z-scheme heterojunction with promising photocatalytic properties was synthesized via a facile one-pot room-temperature method. Ultra-thin nanosheets of BOC and BOB were grown in situ on rGO. The formed 2D/2D direct Z-scheme heterojunction of BOC/BOB with oxygen vacancies (OVs) effectively leads to lower negative electron reduction potential of BOB as well as higher positive hole oxidation potential of BOC, showing improved reduction/oxidation ability. Particularly, rGO is an acceptor of the electrons from the conduction band of BOC. Its dual roles significantly improve the transfer performance of photo-induced charge carriers and accelerate their separation. With layered nanosheet structure, rich OVs, high specific surface area, and increased utilization efficiency of visible light, the multiple synergistic effects of BOC/BOB/rGO can achieve effective generation and separation of the electron-holes, thereby generating more •O2- and h+. The photocatalytic reduction efficiency of CO2 to CO (12.91 µmol/(g·hr)) is three times higher than that of BOC (4.18 µmol/(g·hr)). Moreover, it also achieved almost 100% removal of Rhodamine B and cyanobacterial cells within 2 hours.

Benzene-Linked Polymeric Carbon Nitride for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Cross-linking with functional molecular species in polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) could offer a positive strategy that tunes its molecular structure with excellent conductivity to improve photocatalytic activity. Herein, the benzene ring-cross-linked photocatalyst is obtained via the polymerization of urea, melamine, and trimesic acid. Benzene ring-cross-linked PCN narrows the band gap and augments the push-pull effect of carriers, thus enhancing visible light harvesting and transfer easiness of photogenerated electron/hole pairs. Notably, the amount of trimesic acid was optimized during the benzene ring-cross-linked photocatalyst preparation (marked as 01T/A-CN, 02T/A-CN, and 03T/A-CN). Among them, 02T/A-CN photocatalyst achieved an excellent hydrogen production rate of 1931 μmol/h·g, which is higher than that of CN under visible light and beyond most reported. Theoretical calculations further confirmed that the introduction of benzene ring significantly reduces the band gap of PCN, bringing the delocalized electron, a longer intramolecular electron transition distance, and molecular bending. All those factors made benzene ring-cross-linked PCN with improved photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light irradiation.

Ca-doping interfacial engineering and glycolysis enable rapid charge separation for efficient phototherapy of MRSA-infected wounds

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the primary pathogenic agent responsible for epidermal wound infection and suppuration, seriously threatening the life and health of human beings. To address this fundamental challenge, we propose a heterojunction nanocomposite (Ca-CN/MnS) comprised of Ca-doped g-C3N4 and MnS for the therapy of MRSA-accompanied wounds. The Ca doping leads to a reduction in both the bandgap and the singlet state S1-triplet state T2 energy gap (ΔEST). The Ca doping also facilitates the two-photon excitation, thus remarkably promoting the separation and transfer of 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered electron-hole pairs together with the built-in electric field. Thereby, the production of reactive oxygen species and heat are substantially augmented nearby the nanocomposite under 808 NIR light irradiation. Consequently, an impressive photocatalytic MRSA bactericidal efficiency of 99.98% ± 0.02% is achieved following exposure to NIR light for 20 min. The introduction of biologically functional elements (Ca and Mn) can up-regulate proteins such as pyruvate kinase (PKM), L-lactate dehydrogenase (LDHA), and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CAMKII), trigger the glycolysis and calcium signaling pathway, promote cell proliferation, cellular metabolism, and angiogenesis, thereby expediting the wound-healing process. This heterojunction nanocomposite, with its precise charge-transfer pathway, represents a highly effective bactericidal and bioactive system for treating multidrug-resistant bacterial infections and accelerating tissue repair. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Due to the bacterial resistance, developing an antibiotic-free and highly effective bactericidal strategy to treat bacteria-infected wounds is critical. We have designed a heterojunction consisting of calcium doped g-C3N4 and MnS (Ca-CN/MnS) that can rapidly kill methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) without damaging normal tissue through a synergistic effect of two-photon stimulated photothermal and photodynamic therapy. In addition, the release of trace amounts of biofunctional elements Mn and Ca triggers glycolysis and calcium signaling pathways that promote cellular metabolism and cell proliferation, contributing to tissue repair and wound healing.

Remarkable Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity of High-Energy TiO2 Nanocrystals for NO Oxidation through Surface Defluorination

The superior photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanocrystals with exposed high-energy (001) facets, achieved through the use of hydrofluoric acid as a shape-directing reagent, is widely reported. However, in this study, we report for the first time the detrimental effect of surface fluorination on the photoreactivity of high-energy faceted TiO2 nanocrystals towards NO oxidation (resulting in a NO removal rate of only 5.9%). This study aims to overcome this limitation by exploring surface defluorination as an effective strategy to enhance the photocatalytic oxidation of NO on TiO2 nanocrystals enclosed with (001) facets. We found that surface defluorination, achieved through either NaOH washing (resulting in an improved NO removal rate of 23.2%) or calcination (yielding an enhanced NO removal rate of 52%), leads to a large increase in the photocatalytic oxidation of NO on TiO2 nanocrystals with enclosed (001) facets. Defluorination processes stimulate charge separation, effectively retarding recombination and significantly promoting the production of reactive oxygen species, including superoxide radicals (·O2-), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Both in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations confirm the higher adsorption of NO after defluorination, thus facilitating the oxidation of NO on TiO2 nanocrystals.

Morphology-dependent activation of hydrogen peroxide with Cu2O for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation in bicarbonate aqueous solution

The design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts in bicarbonate-activated hydrogen peroxide systems (BAP) is a hot topic in wastewater treatment. In this work, Cu2O nanoparticles with different morphologies including cubic shape (c-Cu2O), octahedron shape (o-Cu2O) and spherical shape (s-Cu2O), were applied in BAP for the first time to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). Compared with Cu2+ ions and CuO, TC degradation was boosted in the presence of Cu2O in the BAP system, with the degradation rate following the order c-Cu2O > o-Cu2O > s-Cu2O. The morphology-dependent effects could be linearly correlated with the ratio of surface oxygen species (OS), but not with the surface area or Cu(I) ratio. The c-Cu2O catalyst with exposure of (100) facets contained 76.6% OS as the active site for H2O2 adsorption and activation, while the value was much lower for o-Cu2O and s-Cu2O with dominant (111) facets. The presence of HCO3- enhanced the interactions among Cu2O, H2O2 and TC, leading to facile oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) by H2O2, and the formation of various reactive species such as hydroxyl radicals and Cu(III) contributed to TC degradation. This work provides a new method for enhancing H2O2 activation with heterogeneous catalysts by crystal facet engineering.

Facile synthesis of multi-layer Co(OH)2/CeO2-g-C3N4 ternary synergistic heterostructure for efficient photocatalytic oxidation of NO under visible light

In this work, we report a one-step synthesis of ternary Z-scheme Co(OH)2/CeO2-g-C3N4 (CoCe-CN) heterostructure via hydrothermal method. Owing to the modification of Co(OH)2 and CeO2, the existence of Co(OH)2 as an electron acceptor-donor center between CeO2 and g-C3N4 accelerates the electron transfer and provides extra OH- reaction pathway for photocatalytic oxidation of NO. As a result, 50CoCe-CN (Co and Ce accounting for 25% mass ratio separately) achieved a 53.5% conversion efficiency of NO at 600 ppb concentration, which is 1.82 times that of g-C3N4 under visible light. The results of the DFT analysis and element distribution of cobalt and ceria provide convincing evidence supporting the existence of a novel multi-layer structure in the CoCe-CN photocatalyst. This structure involves the loading of CeO2 and Co(OH)2 on the g-C3N4 surface, and Co(OH)2 as a co-catalyst introduced between CeO2 and g-C3N4 realizes the synergy between CeO2 and Co(OH)2 which further improve the photocatalytic properties. The higher photocatalytic efficiencies observed in the CoCe-CN photocatalysts compared to those containing only cobalt (Co-CN) or ceria (Ce-CN) provide further evidence of the synergistic effect of these two elements. This work demonstrates a more efficient and effective ternary photocatalytic system, with greater practical potential for photocatalytic oxidation of NO.

Cyano-Rich g-C3 N4 in Photochemistry: Design, Applications, and Prospects

Cyano-rich g-C3 N4 materials are widely used in various fields of photochemistry due to the very powerful electron-absorbing ability and electron storage function of cyano, as well as its advantages in improving light absorption, adjusting the energy band structure, increasing the polarization rate and electron density in the structure, active site concentration, and promoting oxygen activation ability. Notwithstanding, there is yet a huge knowledge break in the design, preparation, detection, application, and prospect of cyano-rich g-C3 N4 . Accordingly, an overall review is arranged to substantially comprehend the research progress and position of cyano-rich g-C3 N4 materials. An overall overview of the current research position in the synthesis, characterization (determination of their location and quantity), application, and reaction mechanism analysis of cyano-rich g-C3 N4 materials to provide a quantity of novel suggestions for cyano-modified carbon nitride materials' construction is provided. In view of the prevailing challenges and outlooks of cyano-rich g-C3 N4 materials, this paper will purify the growth direction of cyano-rich g-C3 N4 , to achieve a more in-depth exploration and broaden the applications of cyano-rich g-C3 N4 .

Effects of Synthesis Conditions of Na0.44MnO2 Precursor on the Electrochemical Performance of Reduced Li2MnO3 Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Li2MnO3 nanobelts have been synthesized via the molten salt method that used the Na0.44MnO2 nanobelts as both the manganese source and precursor template in LiNO3-LiCl eutectic molten salt. The electrochemical properties of Li2MnO3 reduced via a low-temperature reduction process as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries have been measured and compared. Particularly investigated in this work are the effects of the synthesis conditions, such as reaction temperature, molten salt contents, and reaction time on the morphology and particle size of the synthesized Na0.44MnO2 precursor. Through repeated synthesis characterizations of the Na0.44MnO2 precursor, and comparing the electrochemical properties of the reduced Li2MnO3 nanobelts, the optimum conditions for the best electrochemical performance of the reduced Li2MnO3 are determined to be a molten salt reaction temperature of 850 °C and a molten salt amount of 25 g. When charge-discharged at 0.1 C (1 C = 200 mAh g-1) with a voltage window between 2.0 and 4.8 V, the reduced Li2MnO3 synthesized with reaction temperature of Na0.44MnO2 precursor at 850 °C and molten salt amounts of 25 g exhibits the best rate performance and cycling performance. This work develops a new strategy to prepare manganese-based cathode materials with special morphology.

Synergistic defect and doping engineering building strong bonded S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalysis

Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants is considered a promising approach for wastewater treatment, but is hampered by low efficiency and limited understanding of degradation pathways. A novel oxygen-doped porous g-C3N4/oxygen vacancies-rich BiOCl (OCN/OVBOC) heterostructure was prepared for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The synergistic defect and doping engineering favor the formation of strong bonded interface for S-scheme mechanism. Among them, 0.3 OCN/OVBOC showed the most excellent degradation rate, which was 8 times and 4 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4 and BiOCl, respectively. This excellent performance is mainly attributed to the significantly enhanced charge separation via strong bonded interface and redox capability of the S-scheme heterojunction structure, by tuning the coordination excitation and electron localization of the catalyst via O doping and vacancies. This work provides important insights into the role of synergistic defect and doping engineering in facilitating the formation of strong bonded S-scheme heterojunction and ultimately sheds new light on the design of efficient photocatalysts.

Construction of carbon nitride/zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 heterojunctions on carbon fiber cloth as the photocatalyst for various pollutants removal and hydrogen production

With the macroscale and conductive carbon fiber cloth (CFC) as the substrate, the obtained self-supported photocatalysts hold great promise for enhancing the separation of generated carriers and the recyclability of catalysts, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance and practicality in various applications. Additionally, decorating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ultrahigh surface area on the surface of effective semiconductors is a promising method to enhance the adsorption capacity and photocatalytic performance. Herein, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a typical MOFs was applied to modify carbon nitride (C3N4) on the surface of macroscale and conductive CFC. CFC/C3N4/ZIF-67 (4 × 4 cm2) was obtained by a thermal condensation-chemical bath deposition two-step route, and it shows superior adsorption and photocatalytic activity toward bisphenol A (BPA), levofloxacin (LVFX), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and good hydrogen evolution activity. Besides, the recycling test for four cycles indicates the high stability of CFC/C3N4/ZIF-67 with an easy recycling process. In this study, CFC/C3N4/ZIF-67 was prepared through the hydrothermal and chemical bath deposition two-step method, which enhances light absorption and photocatalytic performance, as well as recyclability for solving environmental and energy issues.

Porous cyclopentadiene unit-incorporated graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets for efficient photocatalytic oxidation of recalcitrant organic micropollutants in wastewater

For the purpose of searching for efficient photocatalysts to deal with recalcitrant organic micropollutants in wastewater, here an in-situ supramolecule self-assembly-thermal polymerization strategy is developed to prepare a series of porous cyclopentadiene (CPD) unit-incorporated g-C3N4 ultrathin nanosheets (CCPD-g-C3N4). The CCPD-g-C3N4 demonstrate CPD unit doping level-dependent and remarkably enhanced visible-light photocatalytic oxidation efficiency towards two organic micropollutants, acetaminophen and methylparaben, in which the optimized CCPD-g-C3N4-2 shows 6.1 and 3.5 times higher acetaminophen and methylparaben degradation rate than bulk g-C3N4; moreover, CCPD-g-C3N4-2 is still robust and efficient in the treatment of five mixed organic micropollutants in pharmaceutical wastewater, and the satisfactory micropollutant removal efficiency is obtained in a wide pH window and the presence of high concentrations of inorganic anions and cations as well as dissolved organic matters. Theoretical calculation combined with experimental test reveal that CCPD-g-C3N4 can significantly reduce ecological risk of the target pollutant after the photocatalytic degradation reaction. Such enhanced photocatalytic oxidation efficiency is dominated by the accelerated charge carrier separation dynamics and extended visible-light response region due to the incorporation of CPD units, which finally lead to the generation of abundant reactive oxygen species to degrade and mineralize target micropollutants efficiently.

Fabrication and characterization of ZnGa1.01Te2.13/g-C3N4 heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic activity

The extensive consumption of fossil fuels increases CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, resulting in serious global warming problems. Meanwhile, the problem of water contamination by organic substances is another significant global challenge. We have successfully synthesized ZnGa1.01Te2.13/g-C3N4 (ZGT/GCN) composites for the first time as effective photocatalysts for both pollutant degradation and CO2 reduction. ZGT/GCN composites were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM-EDS, DRS, BET, PL, and XPS. The ZGT/GCN heterojunction exhibited considerably enhanced photocatalytic activity in the degradation of crystal violet (CV) as well as in the photoreduction of CO2 when compared to pure ZGT and GCN semiconductors. The optimal rate constant for CV degradation was obtained with the ZGT-80%GCN composite (0.0442 h-1), which is higher than the constants obtained with individual ZGT and GCN by 7.75 and 1.63 times, respectively. Moreover, the CO2 reduction yields into CH4 by ZGT-80%GCN was 1.013 μmol/g in 72 h, which is 1.21 and 1.08 times larger than the yields obtained with ZGT and GCN. Scavenger and ESR tests were used to propose the photocatalytic mechanism of the ZGT/GCN composite as well as the active species in the CV degradation.

Jointly augmented photocatalytic NO removal by S-scheme Bi12SiO20/Ag2MoO4 heterojunctions with surface oxygen vacancies

The deep oxidation of NO molecules to NO₃^- species with the avoidance of toxic NO₂ generation is a big and challengeable concern, which can be solved by the rational design and construction of catalytic systems with satisfactory structural and optical features. For such, in this investigation binary composites Bi₁₂SiO₂₀/Ag₂MoO₄ (BSO-XAM) were fabricated through a facile mechanical ball-milling route. From microstructural and morphological analyses, heterojunction structures with surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) were simultaneously created, contributing to the enhanced visible-light absorption, reinforced migration and separation of charge carries, and further boosted generation of reactive species such as superoxide radicals and singlet oxygen. Based on the density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, surface OVs induced the strengthened adsorption and activation of O₂, H₂O, and NO molecules and oxidation of NO to NO₂, while heterojunction structures were beneficial for the continuous oxidation of NO₂ to NO₃^- species. Thus, the heterojunction structures with surface OVs synergistically guaranteed the augmented photocatalytic NO removal and constrained NO₂ generation of BSO-XAM through a typical S-scheme model. This study may provide scientific guidances for the photocatalytic control and removal of NO at ppb level by Bi₁₂SiO₂₀-based composites through the mechanical ball-milling protocol.

Photocatalytic Synthesis of Ammonia from Pinecone Graphite-Phase Carbon Nitride Loaded with MoS2 Nanosheets as Co-catalysts

Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is a promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch process to alleviate the energy and environmental crises. Here, we designed a pinecone-shaped graphite-phase carbon nitride (PCN) catalyst supported with MoS₂ nanosheets by a supramolecular self-assembly method. The catalyst shows an excellent photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (PNRR) due to the larger specific surface area and the enhancement of visible light owing to the reduced band gap. Under simulated sunlight, the sample of PCN loaded with 5 wt % MoS₂ nanosheets (MS5%/PCN) shows a PNRR efficiency of 279.41 μmol g^-1 h^-1, which is 14.9 times that of bulk graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), 4.6 times that of PCN, and 5.4 times that of MoS₂, respectively. The unique pinecone-like structure of MS5%/PCN not only improves the ability of light absorption but also assists in the uniform loading of MoS₂ nanosheets. Likewise, the existence of MoS₂ nanosheets improves the light absorption ability of the catalyst and reduces the impedance of the catalyst. Furthermore, as a co-catalyst, MoS₂ nanosheets can efficiently adsorb nitrogen (N₂) and serve as active N₂ reduction sites. From the perspective of structural design, this work can offer novel solutions for the creation of effective N₂-fixing photocatalysts.

Efficient electrochemical NO reduction to NH3 over metal-free g-C3N4 nanosheets and the role of interface microenvironment

The ever-increasing NO emission has caused severe environmental issues and adverse effects on human health. Electrocatalytic reduction is regarded as a win-win technology for NO treatment with value-added NH₃ generation, but the process is mainly relied on the metal-containing electrocatalysts. Here, we developed metal-free g-C₃N₄ nanosheets (deposited on carbon paper, named as CNNS/CP) for NH₃ synthesis from electrochemical NO reduction under ambient condition. The CNNS/CP electrode afforded excellent NH₃ yield rate of 15.1 μmol h^-1 cm^-2 (2180.1 mg g_cat^-1 h^-1) and Faradic efficiency (FE) of ∼41.5 % at - 0.8 and - 0.6 V_RHE, respectively, which were superior to the block g-C₃N₄ particles and comparable to the most of metal-containing catalysts. Moreover, through adjusting the interface microenvironment of CNNS/CP electrode by hydrophobic treatment, the abundant gas-liquid-solid triphasic interface improved NO mass transfer and availability, which enhanced NH₃ production and FE to about 30.7 μmol h^-1 cm^-2 (4424.2 mg g_cat^-1 h^-1) and 45.6 % at potential of - 0.8 V_RHE. This study opens a novel pathway to develop efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for NO electroreduction and highlights the importance of electrode interface microenvironment in electrocatalysis.

Potassium-Derived Charge Channels in Boron-Doped g-C3N4 Nanosheets for Photocatalytic NO Oxidation and Hydrogen Evolution

The application of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) in photocatalytic NO oxidation was limited due to severe recombination of photogenerated carriers and low concentration of oxidizing species. In this work, K and B were introduced into the interlayer and in-plane framework of g-C3N4 to address this challenge through the thermal polymerization process. The synthesized K-doped B-g-C3N4 nanosheets exhibited expanded light absorption and low charge recombination efficiency. In addition, the doping of K and B reduced the band gap of g-C3N4, which corresponded to enhanced light absorption. B was introduced into the in-plane structure by replacing C atoms, which adjusted the in-plane electron distribution. K was inserted into the interlayer by binding to the N and C atoms of adjacent layers. K-derived electron transfer channels were constructed, which increased electron delocalization and expanded the π-conjugate system. More electrons were transferred through the interlayer channels and were involved in the reaction process. The severe carrier recombination and weak transfer were improved due to the synergistic effect of K and B doping. K-doped B-g-C3N4 nanosheets exhibited enhanced generation of superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals, which played a key role during NO oxidation. The photocatalytic NO oxidation efficiency of codoped g-C3N4 nanosheets reached 61%, which was 2.1 and 1.2 times of that of pristine g-C3N4 and B-doped g-C3N4, respectively. The codoped g-C3N4 sample still exhibited stable photocatalytic NO oxidation efficiency after five cycles. This result provided a potential idea for improving the charge distribution and transfer of layered materials by codoping metallic and nonmetallic elements and for photocatalytic NO oxidation.

Peroxymonosulfate Activation by BaTiO3 Piezocatalyst

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) plays an important role in the advanced oxidation process for environmental remediation. In this study, barium titanate (BTO) piezocatalyst was selected for the activation of PMS driven by ultrasonic power. The degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) by BTO single component, PMS single component, and BTO/PMS double components were investigated. The results indicated that PMS can be efficiently activated by BTO under an ultrasound with an RhB degradation rate of 98% within 20 min. The ultrasound not only promoted the activation of the PMS itself, but the surface charge carriers of BTO induced by the ultrasound also contributed to the activation of PMS. ·O2−, ·OH, and ·SO4− radicals were found to be the main active species that participated in the reaction. In order to verify the reaction’s environmental applicability, amoxicillin (AMX) as a typical environmental pollutant was studied. BTO/PMS displayed 80% removal efficiency of AMX, and the products generated were less toxic as demonstrated by eco-toxicity comparison. This work provides a promising strategy to improve the utilization of ultrasonic energy and apply it to the field of environmental pollutants treatment.
