Microplastics may increase the environmental risks of Cd via promoting Cd uptake by plants: A meta-analysis

Silicon and selenium alleviate cadmium toxicity in Artemisia selengensis Turcz by regulating the plant-rhizosphere

Soil cadmium (Cd) pollution has emerged as a pressing concern due to its deleterious impacts on both plant physiology and human well-being. Silicon (Si) is renowned for its ability to mitigate excessive Cd accumulation within plant cells and reduce the mobility of Cd in soil, whereas Selenium (Se) augments plant antioxidant capabilities and promotes rhizosphere microbial activity. However, research focusing on the simultaneous utilization of Si and Se to ameliorate plant Cd toxicity through multiple mechanisms within the plant-rhizosphere remains comparatively limited. This study combined hydroponic and pot experiments to investigate the effects of the combined application of Si and Se on Cd absorption and accumulation, as well as the growth and rhizosphere of A. selengensis Turcz under Cd stress. The results revealed that a strong synergistic effect was observed between both Si and Se. The combination of Si and Se significantly increased the activity and content of enzymes and non-enzyme antioxidants within A. selengensis Turcz, reduced Cd accumulation and inhibiting its translocation from roots to shoots. Moreover, Si and Se application improved the levels of reducing sugar, soluble protein, and vitamin C, while reducing nitrite content and Cd bioavailability. Furthermore, the experimental results showed that the combination of Si and Se not only increased the abundance of core rhizosphere microorganisms, but also stimulated the activity of soil enzymes, which effectively limited the migration of Cd in the soil. These findings provided valuable insights into the effective mitigation of soil Cd toxicity to plants and also the potential applications in improving plant quality and safety.

Micro- and nanoplastics in agricultural soils: Assessing impacts and navigating mitigation

Micro-/nanoplastic contamination in agricultural soils raises concerns on agroecosystems and poses potential health risks. Some of agricultural soils have received significant amounts of micro-/nanoplastics (MNPs) through plastic mulch film and biosolid applications. However, a comprehensive understanding of the MNP impacts on soils and plants remains elusive. The interaction between soil particles and MNPs is an extremely complex issue due to the different properties and heterogeneity of soils and the diverse characteristics of MNPs. Moreover, MNPs are a class of relatively new anthropogenic pollutants that may negatively affect plants and food. Herein, we presented a comprehensive review of the impacts of MNPs on the properties of soil and the growth of plants. We also discussed different strategies for mitigating or eliminating MNP contamination. Moreover, perspectives for future research on MNP contamination in the agricultural soils are also highlighted.

Toxicity and fate of cadmium in hydroponically cultivated lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) influenced by microplastics

Although more attention has been paid to microplastics (MPs) pollution in environment, research on the synthetic influence of microplastic and heavy metals remains limited. To help fill this information gap, we investigated the adsorption behavior of virgin polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVCMPs) (≤450 µm white spherical powder) on cadmium (II). The effects on seed germination, seedling growth, photosynthetic system, oxidative stress indicators of lettuce, and changes in Cd bioavailability were evaluated under Cd2+ (25 μmol/L), PVCMPs (200 mg/L), and PVCMP-Cd combined (200 mg/L + 25 μmol/L) exposures in hydroponic system. The results demonstrated that the PVCMPs effectively adsorbed Cd ions, which validated by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models, indicating the sorption of Cd2+ on the PVCMPs was primary chemisorption and approximates monomolecular layer sorption. Compared to MPs, Cd significantly inhibits plant seed germination and seedling growth and development. However, Surprising improvement in seed germination under PVCMPs-Cd exposure was observed. Moreover, Cd2+ and MPs alone or combined stress caused oxidative stress with reactive oxygen species (ROS) including H2O2, O2- and Malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation in plants, and substantially damaged to photosynthesis. With the addition of PVCMPs, the content of Cd in the leaves significantly (P<0.01) decreased by 1.76-fold, and the translocation factor and Cd2+removal rate in the water substantially (P<0.01) decreased by 6.73-fold and 1.67-fold, respectively in contrast to Cd2+ stress alone. Therefore, it is concluded the PVCMP was capable of reducing Cd contents in leaves, alleviating Cd toxicity in lettuce. Notably, this study provides a scientific foundation and reference for comprehending the toxicological interactions between microplastics and heavy metals in the environment.

Metagenomic analysis reveals gene taxonomic and functional diversity response to microplastics and cadmium in an agricultural soil

Both microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are common soil pollutants and can interact to generate combined toxicity to soil ecosystems, but their impact on soil microbial communities (e.g., archaea and viruses) remains poorly studied. Here, metagenomic analysis was used to explore the response of soil microbiome in an agricultural soil exposed to MPs [i.e., polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polylactic acid (PLA)] and/or Cd. Results showed that MPs had more profound effects on microbial community composition, diversity, and gene abundances when compared to Cd or their combination. Metagenomic analysis indicated that the gene taxonomic diversity and functional diversity of microbial communities varied with MPs type and dose. MPs affected the relative abundance of major microbial phyla and genera, while their coexistence with Cd influenced dominant fungi and viruses. Nitrogen-transforming and pathogenic genera, which were more sensitive to MPs variations, could serve as the indicative taxa for MPs contamination. High-dose PLA treatments (10%, w/w) not only elevated nitrogen metabolism and pathogenic genes, but also enriched copiotrophic microbes from the Proteobacteria phylum. Overall, MPs and Cd showed minimal interactions on soil microbial communities. This study highlights the microbial shifts due to co-occurring MPs and Cd, providing evidence for understanding their environmental risks.

Screening of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria helps alleviate the joint toxicity of PVC+Cd pollution in sorghum plants

Combined microplastic and heavy metal pollution (CM-HP) has become a popular research topic due to the ability of these pollutants to have complex interactions. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are widely used to alleviate stress from heavy metal pollution in plants. However, the effects and mechanisms by which these bacteria interact under CM-HP have not been extensively studied. In this study, we isolated and screened PGPR from CM-HP soils and analyzed the effects of these PGPR on sorghum growth and Cd accumulation under combined PVC+Cd pollution through pot experiments. The results showed that the length and biomass of sorghum plants grown in PVC+Cd contaminated soil were significantly lower than those grown in soils contaminated with Cd alone, revealing an enhancement in toxicity when the two contaminants were mixed. Seven isolated and screened PGPR strains effectively alleviated stress due to PVC+Cd contamination, which resulted in a significant enhancement in sorghum biomass. PGPR mitigated the decrease in soil available potassium, available phosphorus and alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen content caused by combined PVC+Cd pollution and increased the contents of these soil nutrients. Soil treatment with combined PVC+Cd pollution and PGPR inoculation can affect rhizosphere bacterial communities and change the composition of dominant populations, such as Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. PICRUSt2 functional profile prediction revealed that combined PVC+Cd pollution and PGPR inoculation affected nitrogen fixation, nitrification, denitrification, organic phosphorus mineralization, inorganic phosphorus solubilization and the composition and abundance of genes related the N and P cycles. The Mantel test showed that functional strain abundance, the diversity index and N and P cycling-related genes were affected by test strain inoculation and were significant factors affecting sorghum growth, Cd content and accumulation. This study revealed that soil inoculation with isolated and screened PGPR can affect the soil inorganic nutrient content and bacterial community composition, thereby alleviating the stress caused by CM-HP and providing a theoretical basis and data support for the remediation of CM-HP.

Effects of polyurethane microplastics combined with cadmium on maize growth and cadmium accumulation under different long-term fertilisation histories

Agricultural production uses different types of fertilisation treatments, typically employing the combined application of organic fertiliser (OF) or organic-inorganic fertiliser (OIF) to improve soil quality. When coupled with cadmium (Cd), microplastics (MPs) affect plant growth and Cd accumulation in soils treated with different fertilisers. This study systematically examined the effects of polyurethane (PU) MPs coupled with Cd on the growth characteristics, root metabolite characteristics, rhizosphere bacterial community structure, and Cd bioavailability of maize under different long-term fertilisation treatments and soil types (red/cinnamon soil). The combined effects of PU MPs and Cd on maize growth differed across fertilisation treatments. Under OF, maize plants accumulated more Cd than under OIF. The accumulation of Cd in maize plants in red soil was twice that in cinnamon soil. Under OF, PU MPs promoted Cd activation by decreasing the soil pH, while root metabolites promoted Cd adsorption sites by synthesising specific amino acids, degrading aromatic compounds, and synthesising pantothenic acid and coenzyme A. Under OF, PU MPs can lower the soil pH to promote the activation of cadmium, while root metabolites promote root growth and increase cadmium adsorption sites by synthesizing specific amino acids, degrading aromatic compounds, and synthesizing pantothenic acid and coenzyme A, hereby promoting root Cd absorption. Under OIF, PU MPs act by influencing the biosynthesis of amino acids in root metabolites, enriching energy metabolism pathways, promoting the transport and translocation of mineral nutrients, thereby amplifying the "toxic effects" of Cd. This study provides new insights into the risk assessment of PU MPs and Cd coupling under different fertilisation treatments, and suggests that the prevention and control of combined PU MPs and Cd pollution in red soil under OF treatment should receive more attention in the future.

Influencing mechanisms of microplastics existence on soil heavy metals accumulated by plants

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals often coexist in soil, drawing significant attention to their interactions and the potential risks of biological accumulation in the soil-plant system. This paper comprehensively reviews the factors and biochemical mechanisms that influence the uptake of heavy metals by plants, in the existence of MPs, spanning from rhizospheric soil to the processes of root absorption and transport. The paper begins by introducing the origins and current situation of soil contamination with both heavy metals and MPs. It then discusses how MPs alter the physicochemical properties of rhizospheric soil, with a focus on parameters that affect the bioavailability of heavy metals such as aggregates, pH, Eh, and soil organic carbon (SOC). The paper also examines the effect of this pollution on soil organisms and plant growth and reviews the mechanisms by which MPs affect the bioavailability and movement-transformation of heavy metals in rhizospheric soil. This examination emphasizes the roles of rhizospheric microbes, soil fauna, and root physiological metabolism. Finally, the paper outlines the research progress on the mechanisms by which MPs influence the uptake and transport of heavy metals by plant roots. Through this comprehensive review, this paper provides aims to provide environmental managers with a detailed understanding of the potential impact of the coexistence of MPs and heavy metals on the soil-plant ecosystem.

Global analysis of the adverse effects of micro- and nanoplastics on intestinal health and microbiota of fish

The wide occurrence of micro- and nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) within aquatic ecosystems has raised increasing concerns regarding their potential effects on aquatic organisms. However, the effects of MPs/NPs on intestinal health and microbiota of fish remain controversial, and there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding how the impact of MPs/NPs is influenced by MPs/NPs characteristics and experimental designs. Here, we conducted a global analysis to synthesize the effects of MPs/NPs on 47 variables associated with fish intestinal health and microbiota from 118 studies. We found that MPs/NPs generally exerted obvious adverse effects on intestinal histological structure, permeability, digestive function, immune and oxidative-antioxidative systems. By contrast, MPs/NPs showed slight effects on intestinal microbial variables. Further, we observed that the responses of intestinal variables to MPs/NPs were significantly regulated by MPs/NPs characteristics and experimental designs. For instance, polyvinyl chloride plastics showed higher toxicity to fish gut than polyethylene and polystyrene did. Additionally, larval fish appeared to be more sensitive to MPs/NPs than juvenile fish. Collectively, this study highlights the potential impacts of MPs/NPs on intestinal health and microbiota of fish, and underscores the determinant role of MPs/NPs characteristics and experimental designs in MPs/NPs toxicity.

Effect of cadmium on polystyrene transport in parsley roots planted in a split-root system and assessment of the combined toxic effects

Micro and nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) coupled with heavy metals are prevalent in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Their ecological toxicity and combined adverse effects have obtained significant concern. Past studies primarily focused on how MPs/NPs influence the behavior of heavy metals. Yet, the possible effects of heavy metals on MP/NP transport and toxicity within co-contaminated systems are still not well-understood. In this study, we conducted split-root experiments to explore the transport and toxicity of polystyrene (PS) particles of varying sizes in parsley seedlings, both with and without the addition of cadmium (Cd). Both the PS-NPs (100 nm) and PS-MPs (300 nm) traveled from the PS-spiked roots (Roots-1) to the non-PS-spiked roots (Roots-2), with or without Cd, possibly because of phloem transport. Furthermore, the presence of Cd reduced the accumulation and movement of PS-NP/MP in the roots, likely due to the increased positive charge (Cd2+) on the PS surface. PS-NPs/MPs in both Roots-1 and Roots-2 were observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). When Cd was added to either Roots-1 (PS + Cd|H) or Roots-2 (PS|Cd), there was a minor reduction in the chlorophyll a and carotenoids content in leaves with PS|H. The adverse impacts of MPs|H on both indicators were influenced by the MP concentration. However, chlorophyll b significantly increased in the PS|H, PS + Cd|H, and PS|Cd treatments. Consequently, the chlorophyll a/b ratio declined, indicating inhibition of photosynthesis. The dehydrogenase content showed a minor change in Roots-1 and Roots-2 without Cd stress, whereas it significantly decreased on the Cd-spiked side and subsequently inhibited root growth. In contrast, the marked rise in glutathione (GSH) levels within Cd-spiked roots suggested, based on Gaussian analysis, that GSH and Cd chelation were instrumental in mitigating Cd toxicity. When Cd was introduced to both Roots-1 and Roots-2 simultaneously (PS + Cd|Cd), the aforementioned index showed a notable decline.

Plant growth-promoting bacteria improve the Cd phytoremediation efficiency of soils contaminated with PE-Cd complex pollution by influencing the rhizosphere microbiome of sorghum

Composite pollution by microplastics and heavy metals poses a potential threat to the soilplant system and has received increasing attention. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have good application potential for the remediation of combined microplastic and heavy metal pollution, but few related studies exist. The present study employed a pot experiment to investigate the effects of inoculation with the PGPB Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 on sorghum growth and Cd accumulation under conditions of combined cadmium (Cd) and polyethylene (PE) pollution. Cd+PE composite contamination led to a significant reduction in sorghum length and biomass due to increased toxicity. Inoculation with Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 alleviated the stress caused by Cd+PE complex pollution, and the dry weight of sorghum increased by 25.7% to 46.1% aboveground and by 12.3% to 45.3% belowground. Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 inoculation increased the Cd content and accumulation in sorghum and improved the phytoremediation efficiency of Cd. The inoculation treatment effectively alleviated the nutrient stress caused by the reduction in soil mineral nutrients due to Cd+PE composite pollution. The composition of the soil bacterial communities was also affected by the Cd, Cd+PE and bacterial inoculation treatments, which affected the diversity of the soil bacterial communities. Network analyses indicated that bacterial inoculation regulated the interaction of rhizospheric microorganisms and increased the stability of soil bacterial communities. The Mantel test showed that the changes in the soil bacterial community and function due to inoculation with Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 were important factors influencing sorghum growth and Cd remediation efficiency. The results of this study will provide new evidence for the research on joint plantmicrobe remediation of heavy metal and microplastic composite pollution.

Meta-analysis of impacts of microplastics on plant heavy metal(loid) accumulation

The co-occurrence of microplastics (MPs) and heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) has attracted growing scientific interest because of their wide distribution and environmental toxicity. Nevertheless, the interactions between MPs and HMs in soil-plant systems remain unclear. We conducted a meta-analysis with 3226 observations from 87 independent studies to quantify the impact of MPs addition on the plant biomass and HMS accumulation. Co-occurrence of MPs and HMs (except for As) induced synergistic toxicity to plant growth. MPs promoted their uptake in the shoot by 11.0% for Cd, 30.0% for Pb, and 47.1% for Cu, respectively. In contrast, MPs caused a significant decrease (22.6%, 17.9-26.9%) in the shoot As accumulation. The type and dose of MPs were correlated with the accumulation of HMs. MPs increased available concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Cu, but decreased available As concentration in soils. Meanwhile, MPs addition significantly lowered soil pH. These findings may provide explanations for MPs-mediated effects on influencing the accumulation of HMs in plants. Using a machine learning approach, we revealed that soil pH and total HMs concentration are the major contributors affecting their accumulation in shoot. Overall, our study indicated that MPs may increase the environmental risks of HMs in agroecosystems, especially metal cations.

Microplastics and cadmium affect invasion success by altering complementarity and selection effects in native community

The diversity-invasibility hypothesis predicts that native plant communities with high biodiversity should be more resistant to invasion than low biodiversity communities. However, observational studies have found that there is often a positive relationship between native community diversity and invasibility. Pollutants were not tested for their potential to cause this positive relationship. Here, we established native communities with three levels of diversity (1, 2 and 4 species) and introduced an invasive plant [Symphyotrichum subulatum (Michx.) G. L. Nesom] to test the effects of different pollutant treatments (i.e., unpolluted control, microplastics (MPs) alone, cadmium (Cd) alone, and their combination) on the relationship between native community diversity and community invasibility. Our results indicate that different MPs and Cd treatments altered the invasibility of native communities, but this effect may depend on the type of pollutant. MPs single treatment reduced invasion success, and the degree of reduction increased with increasing native community diversity (Diversity 2: - 14.1 %; Diversity 4: - 63.1 %). Cd single treatment increased the aboveground biomass of invasive plants (+ 40.2 %) and invasion success. The presence of MPs inhibited the contribution of Cd to invasion success. Furthermore, we found that the complementarity and selection effects of the native community were negatively correlated with invasion success, and their relative contributions to invasion success also depended on the pollutant type. We found new evidence of how pollutants affect the relationship between native community diversity and habitat invasibility, which provides new perspectives for understanding and managing biological invasions in the context of environmental pollution. This may contribute to promoting the conservation of biodiversity, especially in ecologically sensitive and polluted areas.

Joint toxicity of cadmium (II) and microplastic leachates on wheat seed germination and seedling growth

Cadmium (Cd) pollution ranks first in soils (7.0%) and microplastics usually have a significant adsorption capacity for it, which could pose potential threats to agricultural production and human health. However, the joint toxicity of Cd and microplastics on crop growth remains largely unknown. In this study, the toxic effects of Cd2+ and two kinds of microplastic leachates, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE), on wheat seed germination and seedlings' growth were explored under single and combined conditions. The results showed that Cd2+ solution and two kinds of microplastic leachates stimulated the wheat seed germination process but inhibited the germination rate by 0-8.6%. The combined treatments promoted wheat seed germination but inhibited the seedlings' growth to different degrees. Specifically, the combination of 2.0 mg L-1 Cd2+ and 1.0 mgC L-1 PVC promoted both seed germination and seedlings' growth, but they synergistically increased the antioxidant enzyme activity of seedlings. The toxicity of the PVC leachate to wheat seedlings was stronger than LDPE leachate. The addition of Cd2+ could alleviate the toxicity of PVC leachate on seedlings, and reduce the toxicity of LDPE leachate on seedlings under the same concentration class combinations but aggravated stress under different concentration classes, consistent with the effect on seedlings' growth. Overall, Cd2+, PVC, and LDPE leachates have toxic effects on wheat growth, whether treated under single or combined treatments. This study has important implications for the joint toxicity of Cd2+ solution and microplastic leachates in agriculture.

Silicon reduces toxicity and accumulation of arsenic and cadmium in cereal crops: A meta-analysis, mechanism, and perspective study

Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) are two toxic metal(loid)s that pose significant risks to food security and human health. Silicon (Si) has attracted substantial attention because of its positive effects on alleviating the toxicity and accumulation of As and Cd in crops. However, our current knowledge of the comprehensive effects and detailed mechanisms of Si amendment is limited. In this study, a global meta-analysis of 248 original articles with over 7000 paired observations was conducted to evaluate Si-mediated effects on growth and As and Cd accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and maize (Zea mays L.). Si application increases the biomass of these crops under As and/or Cd contamination. Si amendment also decreased shoot As and Cd accumulation by 24.1 % (20.6 to 27.5 %) and 31.9 % (29.0 to 31.9 %), respectively. Furthermore, the Si amendment reduced the human health risks posed by As (2.6 %) and Cd (12.9 %) in crop grains. Si-induced inhibition of Cd accumulation is associated with decreased Cd bioavailability and the downregulation of gene expression. The regulation of gene expression by Si addition was the driving factor limiting shoot As accumulation. Overall, our analysis demonstrated that Si amendment has great potential to reduce the toxicity and accumulation of As and/or Cd in crops, providing a scientific basis for promoting food safety globally.

Impacts of polypropylene microplastics on the distribution of cadmium, enzyme activities, and bacterial community in black soil at the aggregate level

Microplastics (MPs) can co-occur widely with heavy metals in soil. This study intended to investigate the influences of the co-exposure of polyethylene MPs (0.5 %, w/w) and cadmium (Cd) in black soil on the Cd distribution, enzyme activities, and bacterial communities in both bulk soil and different sized soil aggregates (> 1, 0.50-1, 0.25-0.50, and < 0.25 mm aggregates) after a 90-day incubation. Our results showed that the existence of MPs increased the distributions of Cd in >1 mm and < 0.25 mm soil aggregates and decreased its distributions in 0.50-1 mm and 0.25-0.50 mm soil aggregates. About 12.15 %-17.65 % and 9.03 %-11.13 % of Cd were distributed in the exchangeable and oxidizable forms in bulk soil and various sized soil aggregates after the addition of MPs which were higher than those in the only Cd-treated soil (11.17 %-14.72 % and 8.66 %-10.43 %, respectively), while opposite tendency was found for Cd in the reducible form. Urease and β-glucosidase activities in the Cd-treated soils were 1.14-1.18 and 1.07-1.31 times higher than those in the Cd-MPs treated soils. MPs disturbed soil bacterial community at phylum level and increased the bacteria richness in bulk soil. The levels of predicted functional genes which are linked to the biodegradation and metabolism of exogenous substances and soil C and N cycles were altered by the co-exposure of Cd and MPs. The findings of this study could help deepen our knowledge about the responses of soil properties, especially microbial community, to the co-occurrence of MPs and heavy metals in soil.

Polyethylene microplastic modulates lettuce root exudates and induces oxidative damage under prolonged hydroponic exposure

Root exudates are pivotal in plant stress responses, however, the impact of microplastics (MPs) on their release and characteristics remains poorly understood. This study delves into the effects of 0.05 % and 0.1 % (w/w) additions of polyethylene (PE) MPs on the growth and physiological properties of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) following 28 days of exposure. The release characteristics of root exudates were assessed using UV-vis and 3D-EEM. The results indicated that PE increased leaf number but did not significantly affect other agronomic traits or pigment contents. Notably, 0.05 % PE increased the total root length and surface area compared to the 0.1 % addition, while a non-significant trend towards decreased root activity was observed with PE MPs. PE MPs with 0.1 % addition notably reduced the DOC concentration in root exudates by 37.5 %, while 0.05 % PE had no impact on DOC and DON concentrations. PE addition increased the SUVA254, SUVA260, and SUVA280 values of root exudates, with the most pronounced effect seen in the 0.05 % PE treatment. This suggests an increase of aromaticity and hydrophobic components induced by PE addition. Fluorescence Regional Integration (FRI) analysis of 3D-EEM revealed that aromatic proteins (region I and II) were dominant in root exudates, with a slight increase in fulvic acid-like substances (region III) under 0.1 % PE addition. Moreover, prolonged PE exposure induced ROS damage in lettuce leaves, evidenced by a significant increase in content and production rate of O2·-. The decrease in CAT and POD activities may account for the lettuce's response to environmental stress, potentially surpassing its tolerance threshold or undergoing adaptive regulation. These findings underscore the potential risk of prolonged exposure to PE MPs on lettuce growth.

Evidence for the transportation of aggregated microplastics in the symplast pathway of oilseed rape roots and their impact on plant growth

As an emerging contaminant, microplastics are absorbed by crops, causing diverse impacts on plants. Plants may have different physiological responses to different uptake modes of microplastics various stage of growth. In this study, the distribution of polystyrene (PS) microspheres in the roots of oilseed rape and the physiological responses at different growth stages were investigated by confocal laser scanning microscope, scanning electron microscopy, and biochemical analysis. This study, conducted via scanning electron microscopy, discovered that agglomerates of microspheres, rather than individual plastic pellets, were taken up by plant roots in solution for the first time. The agglomerates subsequently migrate into the vascular bundles of the root system. Moreover, this study provided the proof for the first time that PS is transported in plants via the symplast system. On the physiological and biochemical function, the exposure of PS at the flowering and bolting stages caused oxidative stress on oilseed rape. That is, the addition of PS with different particle sizes significantly increased peroxidase (POD), malondialdehyde (MDA), photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll content and inhibited superoxide dismutase (SOD) content in oilseed rape at different developmental stages. These changes regulated the chloroplast structure and chlorophyll synthesis, maintained a high photosynthetic rate, and mitigated the toxicity of PS. In addition, correlation analysis showed that MDA and citric acid contents were significantly positively correlated with chlorophyll contents (p < 0.05), which suggested that the 80 nm PS treatment stimulated organic acid secretion in oilseed rape at the bolting stage to maintain a higher chlorophyll content. This study expands the current understanding of the effects of microplastics on crop growth, and the results holding significant implications for exploring the impact of microplastics on vegetables during various developmental stages and for future risk assessment.

Mobilisation of textile waste to recover high added value products and energy for the transition to circular economy

The textile industry is a major contributor to global waste, with millions of tons of textiles being discarded annually. Material and energy recovery within circular economy offer sustainable solutions to this problem by extending the life cycle of textiles through repurposing, recycling, and upcycling. These initiatives not only reduce waste but also contribute to the reduction of the demand for virgin materials (i.e. cotton, wool), ultimately benefiting the environment and society. The circular economy approach, which aims to recreate environmental, economic, and societal value, is based on three key principles: waste reduction, material circulation, and ecological restoration. Given these difficulties, circularity incorporates the material recovery approach, which is focused on the conversion of waste into secondary raw resources. The goal of this notion is to extract more value from resources by prolonging final disposal as long as feasible. When a textile has outlived its functional life, material recovery is critical for returning the included materials or energy into the manufacturing cycle. The aim of this paper is to examine the material and energy recovery options of main raw materials used in the fashion industry while highlighting the need of close observation of the relation between circularity and material recovery, including the investigation of barriers to the transition towards a truly circular fashion industry. The final results refer to the main barriers of circular economy transition within the industry and a framework is proposed. These insights are useful for academia, engineers, policy makers and other key stakeholders for the clear understanding of the industry from within and highlight beyond circular economy targets, SDGs interactions with energy and material recovery of textile waste (SDG 7, SDG 11, SDG 12 etc.).

Selenium Nanoparticles Mitigate Cadmium Stress in Tomato through Enhanced Accumulation and Transport of Sulfate/Selenite and Polyamines

Accumulation of cadmium (Cd) ions in soil is an increasingly acute ecological problem in agriculture production. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) can mediate Cd tolerance in plants; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, we show that the foliar application of SeNPs improved the adaptive capacity of tomato plants to decrease Cd-induced damage. SeNPs induced more Cd in roots but not in shoots despite greater accumulation of selenium and sulfur in both tissues and high selenate influx. Additionally, SeNPs significantly increased thiol compounds, including glutathione, cysteine, and phytochelatins, contributing to enhanced Cd detoxification. Importantly, SeNPs induced the expression of sulfate transporters 1:3, S-adenosylmethionine 1 and polyamine transporter 3. Then, experiments with mutants of these genes showed that SeNP-reduced Cd stress largely relies on the levels and shoot-to-root transport of selenium/sulfur and polyamines. These findings highlight the potential of SeNPs to improve crop production and phytoremediation in heavy metal-contaminated soils.

Assessing stress responses in potherb mustard (Brassica juncea var. multiceps) exposed to a synergy of microplastics and cadmium: Insights from physiology, oxidative damage, and metabolomics

Both microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd) are common contaminants in farmland systems, is crucial for assessing their risks for human health and environment, and little research has focused on stress responses mechanisms of crops exposed to the combined pollution. The present study investigated the impact of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) microplastics (MPs), in combination with Cd, on the physiological and metabolomic changes as well as rhizosphere soil of potherb mustard. Elevated levels of PEMPs and PPMPs were found to impede nutrient uptake in plants while promoting premature flowering, and the concomitant effect is lower crop yields. The substantial improvement in Cd bioavailability facilitated by MPs in rhizosphere soil, especially in high concentrations of MPs, then elevated bioavailability of Cd contributed to promoted Cd accumulation in plants, with distinct effects depending on the type and concentration of MPs. The presence of MPs Combined exposure to high concentrations of MPs and Cd resulted in alterations in plant physiology and metabolomics, including decreased biomass and photosynthetic parameters, elevated levels of reactive oxygen species primarily H2O2, increased antioxidant enzyme activities, and modifications in metabolite profiles. Overall, our study assessed the potential impact on food security (the availability of cadmium to plant) and crops stress responses regarding the contamination of MPs and Cd, providing new insights for future risk assessment in agriculture.

Environmental fate, aging, toxicity and potential remediation strategies of microplastics in soil environment: Current progress and future perspectives

Microplastics (MPs) are small plastic debris (<5 mm) that result from the fragmentation of plastic due to physical and physiochemical processes. MPs are emerging pollutants that pose a significant threat to the environment and human health, primarily due to their pervasive presence and potential bioaccumulation within the food web. Despite their importance, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on the fate, toxicity, and aging behavior of MPs. Therefore, this review aims to address this gap by providing a cohesive understanding of several key aspects. Firstly, it summarizes the sources and fate of MPs, highlighting their ubiquitous presence and the potential pathways through which they enter ecosystems. Secondly, it evaluates the aging process of MPs and the factors influencing it, including the morphological and physiological changes observed in crops and the release of pollutants from aged MPs, which can have detrimental effects on the environment and human health. Furthermore, the impacts of aging MPs on various processes are discussed, such as the mobilization of other pollutants in the environment. The influence of aged MPs on the soil environment, particularly their effect on heavy metal adsorption, is examined. Finally, the review explores strategies for the prevention technologies and remediation of MPs, highlighting the importance of developing effective approaches to tackle this issue. Overall, this review aims to contribute to our understanding of MPs, their aging process, and their impacts on the environment and human health. It underscores the urgency of addressing the issue of MPs and promoting research and remediation efforts to mitigate their adverse effects.

Source-sink response analysis of heavy metals and soil pollution assessment in non-ferrous metal industrial agglomeration areas based on decision unit

Soil heavy metals (HMs) pollution is a worldwide concern. In this study, decision units based on "source-sink relationship" were established using multi-source data. The source-sink response of heavy metals in agricultural soils at the regional scale was analyzed using machine learning methods, receptor models, and geospatial analysis. The comprehensive pollution risk score (CRS) was proposed by integrating a variety of key evaluation indicators to evaluate the pollution degree of each decision unit. We divided the study area into 193 decision units, the proportions of sites with concentrations of Cd, Hg, As, Pb, and Cr exceeding the most stringent risk screening values were 16.4 %, 2.2 %, 4.0 %, 7.6 %, and 0.2 %, respectively. Agricultural activities (livestock manure, fertilizer, sewage irrigation), industrial activities (rare earth ore and tungsten‑molybdenum mining and smelting), and soil parent material are the dominant pollution sources of HMs in the study area. The risk of contamination of each element is ranked from largest to smallest according to the CRS as Cd > Hg > Pb > As > Cr. The western and southwestern water pollution decision units are the areas with the highest risk of soil HMs contamination. This quantitative evaluation framework can provide a relatively accurate decision basis for soil pollution management.

Under flooding conditions, controlled-release fertiliser coated microplastics affect the growth and accumulation of cadmium in rice by increasing the fluidity of cadmium and interfering with metabolic pathways

The combined pollution of microplastics (MPs) and Cd can affect plant growth and development and Cd accumulation, with most studies focusing on dryland soil. However, the effects of polyurethane (PU) controlled-release fertiliser coated MPs (PU MPs), which widely exist in rice systems, coupled with Cd on plant growth and Cd accumulation under flooding conditions are still unknown. Therefore, in the present study, in situ techniques were used to systematically study the effects of PU MPs and Cd coupling on the physiological and biochemical performance, metabolomics characteristics, rhizosphere bacterial community, and Cd bioavailability of rice in different soil types (red soil/cinnamon soil). The results showed that the effects of PU MPs on rice growth and Cd accumulation were concentration-dependent, especially in red soil. High PU concentration (1 %) inhibited rice root growth significantly (44 %). The addition of PU MPs inhibited photosynthetically active radiation, net photosynthesis, and transpiration rate of rice, mainly with low concentration (0.1 %) in red soil and high concentration (1 %) in cinnamon soil. PU MPs can enhance the expression of Cd resistance genes (cadC and copA) in soil, enhance the mobility of Cd, and affect the metabolic pathways of metabolites in the rhizosphere soil (red soil: fatty acid metabolism; cinnamon soil: amino acid degradation, heterobiodegradation, and nucleotide metabolism) to promote Cd absorption in rice. Especially in red soil, Cd accumulation in the root and aboveground parts of rice after the addition of high concentration PU (1 %) was 1.7 times and 1.3 times, respectively, that of the control (p < 0.05). Simultaneously, microorganisms can affect rice growth and Cd bioavailability by affecting functional bacteria related to carbon, iron, sulfur, and manganese. The results of the present study provide novel insights into the potential effects of PU MPs coupled with Cd on plants, rhizosphere bacterial communities, and Cd bioavailability.

Comparative assessment of two biodegradable chelants, S,S-ethylenediamine disuccinic acid and nitrilotriacetic acid, in facilitating Cd remediation by lesser swine cress (Coronopus didymus, Brassicaceae)

Chemically assisted phytoremediation is suggested as an effective approach to amplify the metal-remediating potential of hyperaccumulators. The current study assessed the efficiency of two biodegradable chelants (S,S-ethylenediamine disuccinic acid, EDDS; nitrilotriacetic acid, NTA) in enhancing the remediation of Cd by Coronopus didymus (Brassicaceae). C. didymus growing in Cd-contaminated soil (35-175 mg kg-1 soil) showed increased growth and biomass due to the hormesis effect, and chelant supplementation further increased growth, biomass, and Cd accumulation. A significant interaction with chelants and different Cd concentrations was observed, except for Cd content in roots and Cd content in leaves, which exhibited a non-significant interaction with chelant addition. The effect of the NTA amendment on the root dry biomass and shoot dry biomass was more pronounced than EDDS at all the Cd treatments. Upon addition of EDDS and NTA, bio-concentration factor values were enhanced by ~184-205 and ~ 199-208, respectively. The tolerance index of root and shoot increased over the control upon the addition of chelants, with NTA being better than EDDS. With chelant supplementation, bio-accumulation coefficient values were in the order Cd35 + NTA (~163%) > Cd105 + NTA (~137%) > Cd35 + EDDS (~89%) > Cd175 + NTA (~85%) > Cd105 + EDDS (~62%) > Cd175 + EDDS (~40%). The translocation factor correlated positively (r ≥ 0.8) with tolerance index and Cd accumulation in different plant parts. The study demonstrated that chelant supplementation enhanced Cd-remediation efficiency in C. didymus as depicted by improved plant growth and metal accumulation, and NTA was more effective than EDDS in reclaiming Cd.

Effects of four amendments on cadmium and arsenic immobilization and their exposure risks from pakchoi consumption

Exposure to heavy metal(loid)s (HM) through contaminated food chains poses significant health risks to humans. While soil amendments are known to reduce HM bioavailability, their effects on bioaccessibility and health risks in soil-pakchoi-human systems remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a greenhouse pot experiment coupling soil immobilization with bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment for Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption. Four amendments (attapulgite, shell powder, nanoscale zero-valent iron, and biochar) were applied to soil, resulting in changes to soil characteristics (pH and organic matter), plant dry weight, and exchangeable fractions of As and Cd. Among the tested amendments, biochar exhibited the highest effectiveness in reducing the risk of Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption. The bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment revealed that the application of 5% biochar resulted in the lowest hazard index, significantly decreasing it from 1.36 to 0.33 in contaminated soil. Furthermore, the structural equation model demonstrated that pH played a critical role in influencing remediation efficiency, impacting the exposure of the human body to Cd and As. In conclusion, our study offers a new perspective on mitigating exposure risks of soil HM and promoting safe crop production. The results underscore the importance of considering bioaccessibility in health risk assessment and highlight the potential of biochar as a promising amendment for reducing Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption.

The multi-media environmental behavior of heavy metals around tailings under the influence of precipitation

Precipitation can lead to significant leaching of heavy metals from abandoned tailings，resulting in a decline in the quality of the surrounding environment. This study aimed to simulate and quantify the migration patterns and fate of heavy metals in tailings caused by precipitation in various environmental media (tailings, air, water, soil, and sediments) using leaching tests, source apportionment, and a fugacity model. Results revealed that the average contents of Cd, Cu, As, Pb, Zn, and Cr in the un-weathered tailings were 3.43, 495.56, 160.70, 138.94, 536.57, and 69.52 mg/kg, respectively. The ecological risk factors in the tailings as well as in sediments and soils, were in the following order: Cd >Cu >As >Pb >Zn >Cr. A fugacity model based on the mass-balance methods was established, achieving a good agreement between simulation and measured values. The total amounts of Cd, Cu, As, Pb, and Zn leached from abandoned tailings over the 30-year evaluation period were estimated to be 1.09, 62.44, 0.16, 0.94, and 102.12 t, respectively. Soil and sediments are important reservoirs for heavy metals. The sum of the As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn storage capacities in the soil and sediment accounted for 77.28%, 75.63%, 73.94%, 69.39%, and 57.80% of the total storage capacity, respectively. This study could provide the means for the establishment of a targeted pollution control plan, a guide for restoration projects, and will aid in controlling pollution risk and improving the surrounding environment.

Arabidopsis transcription factor WRKY45 confers cadmium tolerance via activating PCS1 and PCS2 expression

Cadmium (Cd) has long been recognized as toxic pollutant to crops worldwide. The biosynthesis of glutathione-dependent phytochelatin (PC) plays crucial roles in the detoxification of Cd in plants. However, its regulatory mechanism remains elusive. Here, we revealed that Arabidopsis transcription factor WRKY45 confers Cd tolerance via promoting the expression of PC synthesis-related genes PCS1 and PCS2, respectively. Firstly, we found that Cd stress induces the transcript levels of WRKY45 and its protein abundance. Accordingly, in contrast to wild type Col-0, the increased sensitivity to Cd is observed in wrky45 mutant, while overexpressing WRKY45 plants are more tolerant to Cd. Secondly, quantitative real-time PCR revealed that the expression of AtPCS1 and AtPCS2 is stimulated in overexpressing WRKY45 plants, but decreased in wrky45 mutant. Thirdly, WRKY45 promotes the expression of PCS1 and PCS2, electrophoresis mobility shift assay analysis uncovered that WRKY45 directly binds to the W-box cis-element of PCS2 promoter. Lastly, the overexpression of WRKY45 in Col-0 leads to more accumulation of PCs in Arabidopsis, and the overexpression of PCS1 or PCS2 in wrky45 mutant plants rescues the phenotypes induced by Cd stress. In conclusion, our results show that AtWRKY45 positively regulates Cd tolerance in Arabidopsis via activating PCS1 and PCS2 expression.

Global hotspots and trends in interactions of microplastics and heavy metals: a bibliometric analysis and literature review

Microplastics (MPs) are identified as emerging contaminants; however, their interactions with heavy metals in the environment have not been well elucidated. Here, the research progress, hotspots, and trends in the interactions of MPs and heavy metals were analyzed at a global scale using a bibliometric analysis combined with a literature review. We comprehensively searched the Web of Science Core Collection database from 2008 to July 5, 2022. A total of 552 articles published in 124 journals were selected, which came from 70 countries and 841 institutions. The most contributing journals, countries, institutions, and authors were identified. Visualization methods were used to identify high co-citation references and hot keywords in the 552 articles. Evolutionary and cluster analyses of hot keywords suggested several research hotspots in the co-contamination of MPs and heavy metals, including their toxicity and bioaccumulation, the adsorption and desorption behaviors, the environmental pollution and risk assessment, and their detection and characterization. Based on the current research status, several directions of priority are recommended to understand the interactions between MPs and heavy metals and their potential risks. This article can help recognize the current research status and future directions in this field.

Rapid urbanization affects microplastic communities in lake sediments: A case study of Lake Aha in southwest China

Effective management of pollutants in urban environments is crucial for achieving sustainable cities. Microplastics, as an emerging pollutant widely present in contemporary environments, have received widespread attention in recent years. However, limited studies have reported the impact of rapid urbanization on regional microplastics. In this study, the abundance and composition of microplastic communities in the sediments of Lake Aha were analyzed using a "microplastic community" and slicing the sediments at 5 cm intervals. Results showed that microplastic abundance of sediments in Lake Aha was relatively high (up to 1700 items/kg) and decreased with increasing depth, with the highest abundance found in the surface layer (0-5 cm, 1090 ± 474 items/kg). Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA), and analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) revealed that the different sediment layers could be classified into high and low urbanization level groups based on the composition of microplastic communities. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) indicated that agricultural input was the main source of microplastic pollution during low urbanization levels, characterized by low abundance, large particle size, and high fiber proportion, while urban activities dominated during high urbanization levels, with high abundance, small particle size, high proportion of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), fragments, and granules, and colorful microplastics. This study clarifies the impact of urbanization on the abundance and composition of microplastics in lake sediments, which has implications for more effective management and control of microplastic pollution in regions undergoing rapid urbanization.

Formation, behavior, properties and impact of micro- and nanoplastics on agricultural soil ecosystems (A Review)

Micro and nanoplastics (MPs and NPs, respectively) in agricultural soil ecosystems represent a pervasive global environmental concern, posing risks to soil biota, hence soil health and food security. This review provides a comprehensive and current summary of the literature on sources and properties of MNPs in agricultural ecosystems, methodology for the isolation and characterization of MNPs recovered from soil, MNP surrogate materials that mimic the size and properties of soil-borne MNPs, and transport of MNPs through the soil matrix. Furthermore, this review elucidates the impacts and risks of agricultural MNPs on crops and soil microorganisms and fauna. A significant source of MPs in soil is plasticulture, involving the use of mulch films and other plastic-based implements to provide several agronomic benefits for specialty crop production, while other sources of MPs include irrigation water and fertilizer. Long-term studies are needed to address current knowledge gaps of formation, soil surface and subsurface transport, and environmental impacts of MNPs, including for MNPs derived from biodegradable mulch films, which, although ultimately undergoing complete mineralization, will reside in soil for several months. Because of the complexity and variability of agricultural soil ecosystems and the difficulty in recovering MNPs from soil, a deeper understanding is needed for the fundamental relationships between MPs, NPs, soil biota and microbiota, including ecotoxicological effects of MNPs on earthworms, soil-dwelling invertebrates, and beneficial soil microorganisms, and soil geochemical attributes. In addition, the geometry, size distribution, fundamental and chemical properties, and concentration of MNPs contained in soils are required to develop surrogate MNP reference materials that can be used across laboratories for conducting fundamental laboratory studies.

Carbonate-bound Pb percentage distribution in agricultural soil and its toxicity: Impact on plant growth, nutrient cycling, soil enzymes, and functional genes

Metals pollution of lead in agricultural soils is a serious problem for food safety. Therefore, we investigated the toxic effects of carbonate-bound fraction Pb on agricultural soil from various aspects. The results revealed that a higher carbonate-bound fraction of Pb had more toxic effects on wheat growth, as evidenced by higher malondialdehyde (3.17 μmol g^-1 FW) and lower catalase levels (9.77 μg^-1 FW min^-1). In terms of nutrient cycling, soil nutrients including carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus would slow down transformation rates in high concentrations. Compared to carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus were more likely to be affected by the initial carbonate-bound fraction at the earlier stage. Increased Pb dosage may reduce the soil enzymes activity such as urease (119-50 U g^-1) and phosphatase (3191-967 U g^-1), as well as the functional genes of nitrogen degradation related nirK, nisS, and carbon related pmoA. Correlation analysis and structural equation modeling indicated that carbonate bound Pb could regulate nutrients cycle via functional genes inhibition, soil enzyme activity reduction and wheat growth suppression in agricultural soil. Our findings will help with polluted agricultural soil monitoring and regulation through microbial activity to ensure food safety.

Involvement of Nitric Oxide and Melatonin Enhances Cadmium Resistance of Tomato Seedlings through Regulation of the Ascorbate-Glutathione Cycle and ROS Metabolism

Melatonin (MT) and nitric oxide (NO) act as signaling molecules that can enhance cadmium (Cd) stress resistance in plants. However, little information is available about the relationship between MT and NO during seedling growth under Cd stress. We hypothesize that NO may be involved in how MT responds to Cd stress during seedling growth. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship and mechanism of response. The results indicate that different concentrations of Cd inhibit the growth of tomato seedlings. Exogenous MT or NO promotes seedling growth under Cd stress, with a maximal biological response at 100 μM MT or NO. The promotive effects of MT-induced seedling growth under Cd stress are suppressed by NO scavenger 2-4-carboxyphenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO), suggesting that NO may be involved in MT-induced seedling growth under Cd stress. MT or NO decreases the content of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), malonaldehyde (MDA), dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), and oxidized glutathione (GSSG); improves the content of ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) and the ratios of AsA/DHA and GSH/GSSG; and enhances the activities of glutathione reductase (GR), monodehydroascorbic acid reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbic acid reductase (DHAR), ascorbic acid oxidase (AAO), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) to alleviate oxidative damage. Moreover, the expression of genes associated with the ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are up-regulated by MT or NO under Cd conditions, including AAO, AAOH, APX1, APX6, DHAR1, DHAR2, MDHAR, and GR. However, NO scavenger cPTIO reverses the positive effects regulated by MT. The results indicate that MT-mediated NO enhances Cd tolerance by regulating AsA-GSH cycle and ROS metabolism.

Spatial distribution, sources, and risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in cultivated soils using isotopic tracing techniques and Monte Carlo simulation

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in cultivated lands pose serious threats to the environment and human health. Therefore, improving the understanding of their distinct sources and environmental risks by integrating various methods is necessary. This study investigated the distribution, sources, and environmental risks of eight PTEs in cultivated soils in Lishui City, eastern China, using digital soil mapping, positive matrix factorisation (PMF), isotopic tracing, and Monte Carlo simulation. The results showed that Pb and Cd are the main pollutants, which posed higher ecological risks in the study area than the other PTEs. Natural, mining, traffic, and agricultural sources were identified as the four determinants of PTE accumulation via a PMF model combined with Pearson correlation analysis, showing that their contribution rates were 22.6 %, 45.7 %, 15.2 %, and 16.5 %, respectively. Stable isotope analysis further confirmed that local mining activities affected the HM accumulation. Additionally, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk values for children were 3.18 % and 3.75 %, respectively, exceeding their acceptable levels. We also identified that mining activities were the most important sources of human health risks (55.7 % for adults and 58.6 % for children) via Monte Carlo simulations coupled with the PMF model. Overall, this study provides insights into the PTE pollution management and health risk control in cultivated soils.

Contamination characteristics and source analysis of potentially toxic elements in dustfall-soil-crop systems near non-ferrous mining areas of Yunnan, southwestern China

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the dustfall-soil-crop system pose a serious threat to the ecological environment and agricultural production. However, there is still a knowledge gap in terms of better understanding the distinctive sources of PTEs by integrating various models and technologies. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the concentrations, distribution, and sources of seven PTEs in a dustfall-soil-crop system (424 samples in total) near a typical non-ferrous mining area, using absolute principal component score/multiple linear regression (APCS/MLR) combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microscopy techniques. Our results showed that the mean values of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the soils were 211, 14, 105, 91, 65, 232, and 325 mg/kg, respectively. These values were significantly higher than the background soil values in Yunnan. Except for Ni and Cr, all elements in the soil were significantly higher than the screening values of agricultural lands in China. The spatial distribution of PTE concentrations was similar among the three media. The ACPS/MLR, XRD, and microscopy analyses further indicated that soil PTEs mainly originated from industrial activities (37 %), vehicle emissions and agricultural activities (29 %), respectively. Dustfall PTEs mainly originated from vehicle emissions and industrial activities, accounting for 40 % and 37 %, respectively. Crop PTEs mainly originated from vehicle emissions and soil (57 %), and agricultural activities (11 %), respectively. PTEs seriously threaten the safety of agricultural products and the ecological environment once they settle from the atmosphere to soil and crop leaves, further accumulate in crops, and spread through the food chain. Therefore, our study provides scientific evidence for government regulators to control PTE pollution and reduce their environmental risks in dustfall-soil-crop systems.

Investigating immobilization efficiency of Pb in solution and loess soil using bio-inspired carbonate precipitation

Lead (Pb) metal accumulation in surrounding environments can cause serious threats to human health, causing liver and kidney function damage. This work explored the potential of applying the MICP technology to remediate Pb-rich water bodies and Pb-contaminated loess soil sites. In the test tube experiments, the Pb immobilization efficiency of above 85% is attained through PbCO₃ and Pb(CO₃)₂(OH)₂ precipitation. Notwithstanding that, in the loess soil column tests, the Pb immobilization efficiency decreases with the increase in depth and could be as low as approximately 40% in the deep ground. PbCO₃ and Pb(CO₃)₂(OH)₂ precipitation has not been detected as the majority of Pb²⁺ combines with -OH (hydroxyl group) when subjected to 500 mg/kg Pb²⁺. The alkaline front promotes the chemisorption of Pb²⁺ with CO₃^2- reducing the depletion of quartz mineral close to the surface. However, OH^- is in shortage in the deep ground retarding the Pb immobilization. The Pb immobilization efficiency thus decreases with the increase in depth. Quartz and albite minerals, when subjected to 16,000 mg/kg Pb²⁺, appear not to intervene in the chemisorption with Pb²⁺ where the chemisorption of Pb²⁺ with CO₃^2- plays a major role in the Pb immobilization. Compared to the nanoscale urease applied to the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) technology, the micrometer scale ureolytic bacteria penetrate into the deep ground with difficulty. The 'size' issue remains to be addressed in near future.
