Catalytic dehydration of glucose to 5-HMF using heterogeneous solid catalysts in a biphasic continuous-flow tubular reactor

Phase Effects in Zirconia Catalysed Glucose Conversion to 5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural

5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is a key biomass derived platform chemical used to produce fuel precursors or additives and value-added chemicals, synthesised by the cascade isomerisation of glucose and subsequent dehydration of reactively formed fructose to HMF over Lewis and Bronsted acid catalysts, respectively. Zirconia is a promising catalyst for such reactions; however, the impact of acid properties of different zirconia phases is poorly understood. In this work, we unravel the role of the zirconia crystalline phase in glucose isomerisation and fructose dehydration to HMF. The Lewis acidic monoclinic phase of zirconia is revealed to preferentially facilitate glucose isomerisation, while the nanoparticulate tetragonal phase possesses Brønsted acid sites which favour fructose dehydration. Synergy between both zirconia phases facilitates cascade HMF production, with both catalysts investigated as physical mixtures in batch and flow reactor configurations. Using a physical mixture of only 15 wt % m-ZrO2 with 85 wt % t-ZrO2 in either batch or packed bed reactor configuration is sufficient to reach equilibrium conversion of glucose for subsequent dehydration by the t-ZrO2 component. Under continuous flow, a six-fold increase in HMF production was obtained when operating with a physical mixture of m- and t-ZrO2 compared to that from a single bed of t-ZrO2.

Markedly Improved Catalytic Dehydration of Sorbitol to Isosorbide by Sol-Gel Sulfated Zirconia: A Quantitative Structure-Reactivity Study

Isosorbide, a bicyclic C6 diol, has considerable value as a precursor for the production of bio-derived polymers. Current production of isosorbide from sorbitol utilizes homogeneous acid, commonly H2SO4, creating harmful waste and complicating separation. Thus, a heterogeneous acid catalyst capable of producing isosorbide from sorbitol in high yield under mild conditions would be desirable. Reported here is a quantitative investigation of the liquid-phase dehydration of neat sorbitol over sulfated zirconia (SZ) solid acid catalysts produced via sol-gel synthesis. The catalyst preparation allows for precise surface area control (morphology) and tunable catalytic activity. The S/Zr ratio (0.1-2.0) and calcination temperature (425-625 °C) were varied to evaluate their effects on morphology, acidity, and reaction kinetics and, as a result, to optimize the catalytic system for this transformation. With the optimal SZ catalyst, complete conversion of sorbitol occurred in <2 h under mild conditions to give isosorbide in 76% yield. Overall, the quantitative kinetics and structure-reactivity studies provided valuable insights into the parameters that govern product yields and SZ catalyst activity, central among these being the relative proportion of acid site types and Brønsted surface density.

Conversion of bio-carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in three-component deep eutectic solvent

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a valuable platform chemical derived from biomass and lots of research focuses on the synthesis of HMF from fructose and glucose. Herein, conversion of bio-carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was studied in the three-component deep eutectic solvent (DES) system, which was composed of choline chloride (ChCl), boric acid and substrates such as fructose, glucose and sucrose. Bio-carbohydrates handled under typical reaction conditions gave satisfactory conversion (44% for fructose and 31% for glucose) and yield of HMF (35% for fructose and 21% for glucose) in 1 h. Moreover, owing to the benefits of DES, the initial substrate content could be higher and the reaction temperature could be reduced, thus side reactions were effectively avoided and the selectivity of HMF was better (ranging from 79% to 100% for fructose and from 65% to 100% for glucose). We believe this method could provide a promising alternative for conversion of bio-carbohydrates to HMF and a better utilization of biomass.
